STH Senior student athlete injured in crash
web posted December 2, 2005

MERRIWETHER – A Strom Thurmond baseball player was injured in a crash on Highway 23 Wednesday evening after leaving practice and suffered a severely broken leg. “He is resting comfortably,” at MCG a family member said Thursday afternoon.

Harvey "Trey" Drew,  17, of Merriwether was heading home after practice when the crash occurred just past JET Middle School towards Edgefield when Mr. Drew swerved to miss a vehicle in front of him and hit the rear of the vehicle and then traveled down an embankment. He was transported to MCG where he underwent surgery to place rods and plates on multiple fractures in the leg. The surgery was performed Wednesday morning and lasted about two and a half to three hours, “we are just glad he is OK,” family members said.

Mr. Drew, a senior at Strom Thurmond, was preparing for a trip with the baseball team the day after Christmas. It is uncertain if he will still be able to make the trip, “He was so looking forward to playing,” family said adding they did not know if he would be well enough to go and just be a part of the team.

UPDATE: December 15, 2005; Mr. Drew was treated at MCG in Augusta and is doing well.
