STHS SADD Team Takes 1st Place Honors

web posted December 11, 2006

AIKEN - The Strom Thurmond High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Organization participated in the Aiken Center Teen Institute seminar held at Camp Gravit on December 1. High Schools represented at the seminar along with STHS were North Augusta, Aiken, South Aiken, Ridge Spring Monetta, and Wagner Salley.

The local STHS Chapter had to develop a Plan of Action to address what they considered to be the community’s need against “Anti-Drug” initiatives. The STHS team won first place out of all schools for the plan they developed and presented. Students on the STHS team who competed were Quinton Gee, Ridge Yeldell, Katie Edmonds and Amber Bellamy. The organization advisor is Ms. Leadra Sabb, instructor at STHS.

The Teen Institute Seminar empowers students to create change in their schools and communizes. The goal of the program is to prepare school teams to plan, develop and implement peer-to-peer focused prevention strategies that will reduce underage drinking, and tobacco and other drug use.

During the seminar students heard speakers who addressed subjects on alcohol, drugs, higher education, and HIV/AIDS awareness. They participated in group activities with students from other schools. Students had the opportunity to take part in a ROPES Course presented by the SC National Guard, as well as an Obstacle Course and “Fatal Vision Goggles” activities sponsored by North Augusta Public Safety. The STHS students gained valuable information to bring back to their local school to use while promoting their endeavors to prevent destruction decisions.
