COLUMBIA – Mr. Dan Henderson, Agricultural Instructor at Strom Thurmond Career Center was a guest presenter at the recently held Sportsturf Managers of the Future- SC Sports Turf Managers Association business meeting held on December 12 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC.  Mr. Henderson was joined by Mr. David Brooks of Hillcrest High School as a guest speaker.

Sixty-five representatives attended the seminar from various colleges and universities in the state as well as lawn and maintenance employees from towns and cities and parks and recreation departments around the state. The theme of the conference was “High School Turf Management Programs…How To Get Young People Interested”.

The agricultural instructors presented programs on their Turf and Lawn Programs at their respective schools. Mr. Henderson began his presentation by showing the Channel 12 News clip featuring his students maintaining the Strom Thurmond High School Football field followed by a power point presentation of the work done by the students on the baseball field, practice fields, soccer field, softball field, football field and the golf greens and plots of turf varieties. He highlighted the different equipment used in the turf and lawn class to train students in proper turf management. Mr. Henderson also serves as an advisor to the STCC FFA Organization that has numerous state and national awards in the CDE categories.

Mr. Brooks started a Sportsturf Management program at Hillcrest High School in the year 2000. He began with 16 students and the program has grown to 135 students per year and won state and national field of year awards.

Following the presentations guests spent a segment of time with questions about various management techniques and learning about the overall instruction given to students at Hillcrest High School and Strom Thurmond Career Center to prepare these students for a career in turf and lawn management. The seminar ended with a tour of Williams-Brice Stadium.

Mr. Henderson, a twenty five year veteran Agricultural Educator, is a graduate of Clemson University with a BS degree and MS degree in Agricultural Education. He began the turf program in 1995
