School District makes preparations for Pandemic Influenza

web posted December 20, 2006

WEBNEWS – The serious impact of a Pandemic Influenza outbreak in Edgefield County has prompted the Edgefield County School District to prepare a Pandemic Influenza Plan of Action for the necessary response of addressing this issue of the virus should the need occur. Dr. Sharon W. Keesley, Superintendent ECSD met with county health officials and Mike Casey, EMA Director in July of 2006 to discuss the preparation plan.

According to information from The Department of Health and Human Services, (HHS) influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza A virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population. The virus begins to cause serious illness and spreads easily from person to person worldwide.

While there is no way to accurately predict what effect a pandemic influenza outbreak would have on Edgefield County, it is important that the facts about this virus be known, and imperative that the best preparations are in order. Schools could be closed for an extended period of time. An extensive checklist with key components of communications with parents, staff, students and county liaisons such as the Department of Health and Human Services and the County Emergency Management Department; as well as continuity of student learning, core operations, polices and procedures are included in the plan.

“We encourage parents to discuss with their children some very important ways of stopping germs from spreading at home and in the school setting,” said Dr. Frank Roberson, Associate Superintendent for Instructional Services. “According to information from the Department of Health and Human Services, there are a few tips to follow. Briefly, take care to cover your mouth and nose when you cough, clean your hands often and remind children to practice healthy habits.”

Dr. Roberson noted that a core of educators will ensure the continuation of instruction through lessons and assignments should it become necessary to close schools. “This core of educators will design lessons to be placed on the district web site or to be mailed to the children’s home. Parents and students will receive a listing of the core educators’ names and subject areas through a brochure to be issued in January. This brochure will also include web site directions and the telephone number for an Instructional Help Line for parents and students to receive assistance.” Dr. Roberson said.

“The Edgefield County School District will monitor the potential outbreak of influenza in our schools and the community. If necessary, the plan of action developed by the school district will be implemented to assure the best possible care of our staff and students in our schools.” Dr. Roberson concluded.
