Storm wreaks havoc on Merriwether

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted May 20, 2005

Severe thunderstorms moved through the county this afternoon causing some major disruptions in power and phone service for some local areas. At one point the Merriwether Fire Station lost power and phones and had only radio communication. The southern end of the county took the brunt of the storm which produced small hail, heavy rains, and winds which were gusting up to 50 MPH.

Reports of trees down across roads began ringing at the 911 center in Edgefield around 2:30 pm. Three trees had fallen across Woodlawn Road on the west end towards highway 28 and another was down on Briggs Road. Mount Vintage Gold Club was also struck by lightning.

Gurosik’s Berry Plantation, 345 Briggs Road in Merriwether, had a large branch of the tree that shades the parking area fall on a customer’s Lexus RX300 sport utility, owned by Nan Briggs, of Irmo SC, during the storm which caused a fair amount of damage. Luckily the heaviest part of the branch, which was as large as a tree in its own right, missed a direct blow to the car.

Mrs. Briggs said she was glad it was not worse and that she was not in the car at the time. Clyde Guroski, owner of the berry farm, said he was glad no one was hurt.

Mrs. Briggs was given our contact numbers so she could get pictures for her insurance company and requested additional photos be taken. Edgefield Daily.com was more than happy to oblige and took around 20 photos and, as is our policy, will provide them free of charge.
