Alcohol believed to be a factor in Friday night crash

web posted December 16, 2006

SWEETWATER – Shortly after 9pm Friday night Deputies, Countyline Firefighters, and EMS were summoned to a two-car crash on northbound Highway 25 and Square Circle Ranch Road. A Chevrolet Suburban was traveling northbound on highway 25 when a white Chevrolet 1500 4x4 truck reportedly ran the stop sign on Square Circle Ranch Road. The driver of the suburban tried to avoid the truck by swerving to the right but hit the rear of the truck spinning the truck around. The suburban stopped just short of several signs at the intersection.

The driver of the truck was immobilized and transported to MCG. The driver of the suburban, a Johnston woman, and several teens riding with her received minor injuries and were not transported but were treated on the scene.

Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash as the driver of the truck is suspected of being intoxicated when he ran the stop sign.

Alcohol is reported as being a factor in 396 fatalities, or 36% of the 1,093 deaths from traffic accidents in 2005 in South Carolina. 577 deaths were attributed to unrestrained occupants.
