Driver arrested after short chase into Aiken County

web posted December 19, 2006

SWEETWATER – An Edgefield County Deputy on routine patrol around 8:45pm Saturday night spotted a blue 1990 Cadillac exiting Square Circle Ranch Road onto southbound Highway 25 and failed to use a turn signal. The deputy began to follow the car and ran the license plate which came back as not on file, reports indicate. The deputy initiated a traffic stop using blue lights and siren and the Cadillac refused to stop.

The Deputy radioed for dispatch to alert North Augusta City Police he was in pursuit of the car as they continued southbound on highway 25. Once crossing into Aiken County the car came to a stop at Madison Avenue. When Avis Jeremy Simpkins, 20, of 424 Madison Avenue, North Augusta, got out his car he was arrested.

After a search of the vehicle pursuant to the arrest the deputy recovered a clear plastic baggie containing what police believe is marijuana. A check of Mr. Simpkins’ drivers license came back suspended. Mr. Simpkins’ car was towed from the scene and he was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked on charges of simple possession of marijuana, failure to stop for blue light, failure to give turn signal, and driving under suspension.
