web posted January 24, 2006

TRENTON – South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Officers made the arrest of William Walden Hartman, 46, of Three Notch Road in Aiken on Friday. Mr. Hartman is the Aiken County Public Defender’s Office’s chief legal investigator and was charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances (two counts) and one count of furnishing or attempting to furnish or obtain contraband for a prisoner. He was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center on Friday Afternoon according to arrest records.

Mr. Hartman faces felony charges that could bring a jail term of 15 years if convicted and a fine of up to $15,000.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Officials have refused comment on the case at this time. Mr. Hartman has been released on a $10,000 bond according to Edgefield County Detention Center records obtained by EdgefieldDaily.com.

A trail date was not available at this writing.

Mr. Hartman is the third official arrested for charges of contributing contraband to inmates.
