Suspected Scrap Metal Thieves Caught Red Handed

web posted January 25, 2013

TRENTON – A Square Circle Ranch Road man was contacted by a friend advising that three people were loading up scrap metal from property he owned on Edgefield Road. Being nearby, the man arrived in time to see the truck the suspects were driving and began to follow while contacting Trenton Police by phone.

Edgefield County Deputies converged on the area as the three suspects turned onto Woodyard Road heading towards a scrap metal recycling company. The truck continued up Woodyard Road until it was stopped by an unmarked Sheriff's vehicle near Wardlaw Academy.

The three occupants of the truck, 47-year-old Sharon Ann Simpkins, 20-year-old Dexter Jamar Cheatham and Evander Lee Cheatham, 19, were found to be in possession of scrap metal the owner identified on the scene as coming from his property.

All three were arrested on the scene and booked into custody for larceny.

The owner of the scrap metal placed a value of the items at $1,050. The truck was towed from the scene.
