Teen's death marks first traffic fatality of 2007 web posted February 27, 2007 TRENTON – A weekend collision resulted in Edgefield County’s first fatality of 2007 when Oquendo Jones, 17, of Johnston died after being ejected from the 2003 Chevy Blazer he was a passenger in when the collision occurred just after midnight Saturday night on Highway 19. According to Lance Corporal Scot Edgewood of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Mr. Jones was not wearing a seatbelt at the time the crash occurred. The collision happened when both vehicles were southbound on Highway 19 near Windy Ridge Road just outside of Trenton. The driver of the Blazer attempted to pass a 2005 Honda two-door coupe and struck the front of the Honda while completing the pass. The collision caused the Blazer to veer off the left side of the roadway and then rolled at least once, ejecting Mr. Jones. He was pronounced dead at MCG in Augusta shortly after arriving by ambulance. The driver of the Blazer, who is also a minor, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash Cpl. Edgewood reported. The driver of the Honda and his three passengers, also minors, were uninjured and wearing seatbelts. Amos and Sons Funeral Home in Johnston are in charge of the arrangements, which are incomplete at this time. Mr. Jones was a Junior at Strom Thurmond High School. Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said the cause of death was severe chest trauma as a result of the crash. The collision is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and charges are pending the result of the investigation. In 2006 there were seven traffic fatalities in the county with six of the seven being 19 years of age or younger. In South Carolina there have been 113 fatal crashes resulting in 123 deaths this year as of February 25. Of the 123 deaths, 70 were not wearing a seatbelt according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. In 2006 there were a total of 106 fatal crashes for the year resulting in 215 deaths. For
