Deputy Arrests Motorcyclist Driving 90+ in 35 MPH Zone

web posted March 17, 2014

TRENTON An Edgefield County Deputy on patrol Saturday afternoon met a motorcyclist coming through the Pecan trees on Highway 25 running over 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. The deputy turned around in an effort to make a traffic stop, but the motorcycle was not slowing down and was putting a great deal of highway between himself and the deputy.

As the deputy tried to catch up to the speeding driver, he radioed ahead to Johnston Police to alert them that the driver was approaching Johnston on Highway 121. The deputy reported that the driver was passing multiple vehicles on double yellow lines as he continued at speeds in excess of 90 mph.

The motorcyclist was eventually slowed down behind an 18-wheeler and could not pass due to oncoming traffic, allowing the deputy to catch up an conduct a traffic stop at a church just south of the Johnston Town Limits.

The driver, Michael Franklin Hobby Jr., 27, of Cross Hill, SC, was driving with a beginners motorcycle permit and did not have any warrants for his arrest. However, the deputy arrested Hobby and charged him with reckless driving and had the motorcycle towed from the scene.

He was released on Sunday on a $445 cash bond. A court date was not available.
