More property reported stolen at Trenton self-storage business

web posted March 20, 2009
TRENTON – Sheriff’s Investigators were back out at the Trenton Self Storage on Thursday with the report of another theft. However this time it was not one of the storage units, it was a generator that was stored with a work truck and trailer. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said that with the number of recent thefts the business owners are contacting customers who have not been to the location recently, which led to the recent discovery.

The owner of the truck and trailer stored at the facility was last there to check the equipment around three months ago. Upon his arrival Thursday morning the large generator was reported stolen. Investigator Jimmy Smith, who is also working the case, said no firm time of the theft was available. “All we know at this point is it was sometime in the past two or three months.” The value of the Honda generator was valued between $1,000 and $5,000.

The owners of the storage facility also reported that they had a quantity of gravel stolen from a pile at the back of the gated area. Attempts to retrieve surveillance footage recorded for the latest two discovered thefts are underway.

Inv. Doran said that SLED has been asked to participate in the investigation in an effort to identify the main suspect. The investigation has already expanded into Greenwood, Laurens, and Saluda Counties due to similar thefts. “There’s been a lot of this (storage units burglarized) in the area,” Inv. Doran said, “A lot of them have been reported around the Lake Greenwood area.”

Though Inv. Doran said it is unknown if their suspect could be involved in the other recent thefts in and out of the county, nothing would be ruled out and the array of agencies are cooperating by exchanging evidence.

Additional information will be released as permissible during the investigation Inv. Doran said.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6-foot, weighing between 230 and 250 pounds and possibly a grey beard.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office at 803-637-5337 or 803-278-1625. You can give information and remain anonymous.
