Driver, Passengers Flee after Running Checkpoint

web posted March 25, 2014

TRENTON Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies and a Highway Patrolman were conducting a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Wise and Church Streets in Trenton just before midnight Saturday when a black Lincoln approached the checkpoint. Rather than stop, the driver ignored the order to stop and took off while the occupants were throwing beer cans out of the window.

Deputies tried to stop the car, at times reaching high speeds, until the driver approached the intersection of Watson Street at Wise Street and was traveling too fast to stop. The driver entered a yard of a home and came to a stop with the driver and two passengers jumping out of the car and trying to flee the scene on foot.

Deputies were able to capture one of the passengers, Donnell Nathaniel Baskett, 31, of Brady Drive in North Augusta, as he exited the car. Baskett told the deputies he did not know who the driver and the other passenger were. He also gave deputies a false name, that was not corrected until he was being booked into custody.

Basket was charged with open container and giving false information to police.

A search of the area for the other two men was unsuccessful The car was towed from the scene. A "hold" was placed on the car until the investigation into who the other two men were is completed. Warrants will be issued when identified.
