More details in death released by EdgefieldDaily.com

web posted May 24, 2007
TRENTON – EdgefieldDaily.com has more information on the industrial accident that took the life of 53-year-old Sandra Taylor on Tuesday at the Edgefield Manufacturing fiber mill in Trenton. EdgefieldDaily.com warns readers that the information is descriptive in nature.

BELOW: An Artist rendition of the machine operated by Ms. Taylor

According to information obtained by EdgefieldDaily.com the machine that Ms. Taylor was working on at the time was a series of large exposed steel rollers that the fibers traveled over at a very high rate of speed. The rollers, said to be in the diameter of between 10 and 14 inches and about 24 inches in depth in two rows, are made of stainless steel. As the fibers travel over the serpentine occasionally a fiber will stick to a roller and begin to pull other fibers causing a build-up or “wrap” that will have to be cut away before production can continue.

Experienced workers, it was said, will sometimes notice a thread on a roller and reach into the machine to remove it to keep production going rather than shut the line of machines down and slow production. This is what is believed to have happened in the case with Ms. Taylor.

According to the information obtained, Ms. Taylor is thought to have reached into one of the rollers and her hand became tangled which twisted her and then dragged her backwards into the rollers causing the massive head trauma.

She was found lying beneath the rollers and against the main frame of the machine with her right arm and hand twisted behind her and under her head. A worker had to pull her from underneath the machine to give first aid after the machines were shut down.

According to ABC affiliate WJBF Channel 6 in Augusta, Ms. Taylor’s family members said this was not the first time Ms. Taylor had been injured at the Trenton facility. Company officials have repeatedly refused to speak with reporters about the tragedy.

A report of the investigation by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has not been made available at this time. OSHA is also investigating the death. This is the first reported death at the facility.

Editor’s note: The Artist drawing of the machine is not to scale and EdgefieldDaily.com cannot confirm the number of rollers on the piece of machinery. Photographs taken by the Sheriff’s Office have not been released.
