Trenton completes town square

The Town of Trenton has finished the beautification project of the town square with a few minor finishing touches being done today, May 31.

The centerpiece of the square, the cannon, has been returned to its prominent place in the square which now is surrounded by pathways and benches. At the edge of the square in a raised flower bed stands the new addition of a large town clock bearing the name of the town and its incorporation in date of 1871.

At the entrance to the plaza are two plaques which show some of the rich history of Trenton and also its favorite son, Ben Tillman, who served in government as well as being one of the Ten Governors from Edgefield County.

Chief of Police Tanks said, “It really looks good.”

The new look from the old pebbled area is surrounded by flowers and grass with the signature magnolia facing town hall. Some wanted to take the tree down but Mayor Helen Summer said the architects said to leave it, which they did.

Trenton Councilman Keith Sexton saw the newly completed square today for the first time as well, “That is beautiful,” he said. Mr. Sexton said it was a “big improvement, it’s a beautiful place to visit.” In addition to being very pleased personally Mr. Sexton said the town was very happy as well and the work had been completed ahead of schedule, “they promised they would have it done before the Peach Festival and they did it,” he said.

The Peach Festival is June 18th.
