TRENTON – Edgefield
County's first murder in
2008 was discovered when a Courtney Road woman came home and found
her
husband dead Sunday afternoon. The report of the murder came in just
after 3 pm. Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett said he was
uncertain how 60-year-old Raymond Merriweather was killed, “I
don’t know if he was
shot or beaten. We’ll know more after the autopsy,” which is scheduled
for 8:30 am Monday.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arrived on the scene
around 6 pm to begin processing the crime scene for evidence which also
included a nearby home. The Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team was called and
tracked at least one trail to a nearby home. It is unknown if the trail
was related to the murder.
“At this time there doesn’t appear to be anything missing from the
home,” Cpl. Harter said. There are no indications as to the motive and
the investigation is still underway. Cpl. Harter said there have been
few calls to the couple’s home on the 100 block of Courtney Road but
there have been several calls to nearby homes.
Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran, who is in charge of the
investigation, said that the victim’s son was taken into custody at the
scene and was being held on an unrelated disorderly conduct charge.
Coroner Burnett said that SLED and the Sheriff’s Office has recovered
evidence from the crime scene that will aid in the investigation but he
did not elaborate on what type of evidence was discovered. "It (the
death) is being ruled a homicide," Burnett said.
Chief Investigator Randy Doran said they are following strong leads in
the case but also refused to elaborate citing the ongoing
investigation, "We'll know more when we get the report back from SLED."
The initial report is expected before the end of the week Inv. Doran
said.
No time of death has been released. The man’s
name was released by area television news broadcasts Sunday night, not
Mr. Burnett.
