Tornados rip through Trenton

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  14, 2005

TRENTON - Around 2:45 pm Wednesday reports of a tornado near Trenton began to come into the Edgefield County E911 Center. Deputies were dispatched to the scene where Investigator Randy Doran discovered large pieces of tin laying in the middle of Highway 191 near Luke Bridge and Lott Roads.

Kenneth Fountain, who owns a chicken farm in the area, said he was standing outside one of the houses when the tornados came through, “there were two of them, one on the ground and the other still in the air.” Fountain said the winds were blowing, “well over a hundred miles an hour.”

Another worker on the farm said he saw the roof of one house lift up then the wall was pushed in by the winds and then the roof came to rest back down on the now leaning wall. (pictured left) In the area were large branches blown down and uprooted peach trees.

Teresa Culver said she saw the storm coming and called her three children inside, “the rain started pouring down and the wind picked up,” and it began to hail she said, “then I saw them (the tornados) and I made the kids go into the bathroom and we took a mattress off a bed and drug it into the bathroom and covered up with it.” The last time she saw the tornado it was just a couple hundred feet from her home. “It was huge, it was black, and it was swirling. We were praying and the 911 operator was praying with us.”

Culver said her sister-in-law was watching from her house and told her the tornado was heading right at the house then lifted up to pass just over the house and made contact with the ground again after passing, “and headed for the chicken houses,” she said. (Pictured left is a section of a barn roof and tin in the trees)

In the area were carports blown across fields, pump houses and sheds destroyed, and tin and roofing high in trees that had been ripped from barns and houses in the area. One homeowners SUV had been blown off the parking pad. Estimates on the damage caused have not been calculated at this time.

Edgefield County Deputies directed traffic when necessary and stood guard by a power line that had a large branch pulling it down near the ground while other lines in the trees were sparking. South Carolina Electric workers were called to repair the damaged lines.

All total Edgefield Daily.com spoke with eight witnesses who say they saw two tornados side by side. One on the ground and one that never touched down. Fields in the track of the tornados were flattened in odd circular patterns between Lott Road and Highway 191. Nickel size hail and very heavy rains were also reported during the passing storm. Broken branches and debris was spotted on Airport Road about one and a half miles southwest before reaching Highway 191. The tornados were reportedly traveling northeasterly into Aiken County.
