Trenton August Council meeting Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 11, 2005 TRENTON - The Trenton town council held its regular monthly meeting Wednesday night. After the pledge and prayer the meeting was called to order and Mayor Helen Summer asked the council to review the minutes of the July 13 meeting and financial reports. Councilman Keith Sexton made a motion to accept the two items and a second by Joe Holmes resulted in the 5-0 vote to approve. Under Old Business Mayor Summer said she wanted to offer an update on the Municipal Association of South Carolina meeting, “We were honored at the annual meeting, “ Mayor Summer said the town was given the , “ 2005 Municipal Achievement Award,” and award the town has won eight times and three times in the last four years. Mayor Summer said she would personally like to Administrator Bernard Welborn, “for all the work he put in on the project,” (Library) adding, “we could not have done it without you.” Moving on to New Business the Mayor asked Administrator Welborn to discuss the use of the 2005-2006 PARD funds. Mr. Welborn stated he had not received the allocation yet but the funds have to go towards permanent recreational improvements. Mr. Welborn said the priority has to be replacing some of the lighting fixtures on the ball field. “Generally we write this applications as generic as possible,” so that it can be used to cover any improvements to the gym and ball field. Councilman Billy Padgett made a motion to use the PARD funds to repair the lights followed by a second from Councilman Bobby Turner. With no further discussion the council voted 5-0 to approve the spending. The next item was a request for a $500 donation to the Veterans Day Celebration that is held at the Strom Thurmond stadium. Mayor Summer said, “I don’t think there is any way we can spend our money any better than to honor our veterans.” Councilman Sexton made the motion to donate the funds and Councilman Padgett seconded and the council voted 5-0 to approve the $500. Mayor Summer said she would encourage everyone to attend the celebration. Wayne Carpenter was next on the agenda to ask for permission to use the park for a dance, “Hot August Nights”, which is being put on by the Trenton Community Development Association on Saturday, August 20. Also requested was the use of the Trenton Gym in the event of rain. Mr. Carpenter stated they would be requesting the town to provide the insurance for the event in the amount of $323.30 for a one million dollar policy. Mayor Summer asked about the scheduled time for the dance and asked that it end at midnight rather that 1 am. Mr. Carpenter agreed to the time limit and asked if the town would allow them to begin one hour earlier making the time from 6 pm to 12 am. That request was granted. Under the stipulations the council voted to allow the use of both facilities and approved paying the insurance premium for the TCDA. Mr. Carpenter also requested the use of the gym on behalf of the TCDA for the week of October 26 thru November 2 in order to conduct the annual Halloween Carnival which would be held on October 29 and the haunted house would run for October 28 and 29, all housed at the Trenton Gym. The additional time was needed in order to build the sets and decorate and then remove the sets and decorations after the event was over. The question of insurance for the dance was raised by Councilman Sexton and Mr. Carpenter said the Association had not insured the event in the past three years. Administrator Welborn stated that the event sponsor is the primary on claims but in the event of an accident or claim the town would be named a party. With that Mr. Carpenter asked what the council wanted to do as far as providing insurance and Mayor Summer said, “That is up to ya’ll. You are the ones taking the liability,” at which time Mr. Carpenter said they would price the insurance coverage. Return to Main Page
