Storeowner reports suspect attempting to cash forged check

web posted August 31, 2010

TRENTON – A store clerk at Billy’s Superstore in Trenton notified the owner when a man entered the store on Saturday trying to cash a check similar to one that was cashed several weeks ago that was returned with no account found. A rash of checks has now turned up in Johnston and Trenton with over $8,000 being taken from the store owners. Johnston Police have arrested one woman in connection to the fake checks in their case.

Lesa Ann Coleman Betcher, 46, of Camellia Street N.E., Aiken, was booked into custody on Friday and has been charged with criminal conspiracy, two counts of forgery, and a seatbelt violation in connection to the Johnston cases. Three other suspects are still being sought by Johnston Police.

The clerk and the store owner recognized the man that cashed a $638.50 check that was found to be a forgery. When he entered to cash the latest check on Saturday the clerk went to get the owner and the man fled out of the store and left in a white Dodge Neon.

Video surveillance footage of the incident was turned over to Sheriff’s Investigators.
