Scrap Metal Check Leads to Arrest of Aiken Man

web posted September 20, 2012

TRENTON – An Edgefield County Sheriff's Investigator ran the license plate of a 1989 GMC Jimmy pulling a trailer hauling scrap metal due to the rise in scrap metal thefts. The tag came back to a tag stolen out of Aiken County from an Oldsmobile and the investigator approached the driver at Billy's Super Store in Trenton ending in the arrest of the driver, but not his two passengers.

The driver, 30-year-old Davis Edward Thurmond, of Aiken, told the investigator he had purchased the truck recently, but could not provide any paperwork for the sale, no registration or proof of insurance. A check of the VIN number came back to someone else. A check of Thurmond's drivers license came back as suspended and he was taken into custody.

His two passengers, a male and a female, were checked for warrants and were cleared.

It is believed the trio was on their way to Brewers Scrap Metal located on nearby Woodyard Road. An incident report did not state what type of scrap metal was on the trailer or where it was claimed to have come from.

The vehicle, trailer and its contents were towed from the scene.

Thurmond was booked into custody on charges of driving under suspension, operating an uninsured vehicle, failure to register a vehicle, and receiving stolen goods. He remains in custody on a total of $2,254 in Surety bonds.
