Industry to Locate Near Trenton - Creating 60 to 70 Jobs
web posted September 20, 2012
TRENTON – Atlanta-based Enova Energy Group
said it plans to build a wood pellet processing plant in Edgefield
County. The company plans to invest $120 million to $150 million in the
project, which will be built on a 94.5-acre site along S.C. 121,
between Trenton and Johnston, on the eastern side of the county.
Enova will cover 80% of the project’s cost with debt.
The investment is expectedly to directly create 60 to 70 jobs, said Ben
Easterlin, senior vice president of development at Enova. Another 150
jobs will be created during construction.
Work on the plant is expected to begin during the first quarter 2013.
The Edgefield plant is one of three wood pellet projects Enova
announced Tuesday. Easterlin said the other two will be in Georgia.
The plants will produce wood pellets to be used as a renewable fuel for
export to the European Union under long-term contracts with public and
Some countries in Europe are searching for ways to trim carbon
emissions in fueling base-load power generation. Also, countries like
Germany, plan to shut down commercial reactor units in the wake of
safety issues raised by the nuclear accidents at Fukushima.
Enova’s new facilities will each produce 500,000 tons of wood pellets
by 2014. The pellets from the Edgefield plant will move by rail to the
Port of Savannah and shipped to Europe, Easterlin said.
"As demand for biomass has grown in Europe, Enova is ideally situated
to take advantage of the vast resources of sustainable forests being
grown throughout the Piedmont region of the southeastern U.S.," said
Zach Steele, Enova CEO.
Enova said it is exploring expansion to other Southern states, aiming
to produce an additional 2.2 million tons of wood pellets.
The process of making pellets involves stripping tree bark and running
the logs through a chipper, Easterlin said. The chips are dried,
lowering the moisture content to 10% from 50%, and then pressed through
Depending on the order, pellets are pressed into different sizes —
usually 6 to 8 millimeters long or about the length of the first digit
of a human finger.
Enova, founded in 2009, is a vertically integrated developer and asset
owner of renewable energy projects. Last year, Enova closed Plainfield
Renewable Energy in Connecticut with more than $225 million in
financing. The facility is a 37.5-megawatt biomass plant.
Enova has created a subsidiary, Enova Wood Pellet Group LLC, which has
a dedicated management team focused on the wood pellet industry.
