Trenton Man Arrested after Attempted Stabbing

web posted October 2, 2012

TRENTON – A Trenton man has been arrested and charged with assault and battery in the second degree following an attempted stabbing at a Gardner Road home Sunday night. Howard Allen Maurer, 52, was taken into custody at gunpoint following a 911 call from the victim who fled to a nearby home to report the attack. When Sheriff's Deputies arrived Maurer appeared on the front porch "screaming" and pulled out the 10" hunting knife causing deputies to draw their weapons an order him to drop the knife.

After a number of "loud verbal commands" to drop the knife, Maurer complied. After several more commands to he complied and went to his knees and placed his hands behind his back and was taken into custody without further incident.

According to an incident report, the victim said he was in a bedroom when Maurer came in accusing the acquaintance of stealing his matches. When the man denied the claim, Maurer is said to have pulled the knife and tried to stab the man in his chest.

The man was able to fend off the attack and run from the home to a nearby home and placed the 911 call.

Deputies seized the knife as evidence and transported Maurer to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking. He remains behind bars at this writing.
