Deputy injured in head on collision

web posted October 13, 2009
TRENTON – An Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputy lost control of her patrol car while in route to a single car crash and slammed head on into a Ford pickup truck Monday morning. The collision closed all traffic on Highway 25 for over an hour as emergency workers and EMS treated the injured drivers. The collision took place at approximately 11:40 am during a steady rain.

SC Highway Patrol Public Information Officer (PIO) Scott Edgeworth said Patrick Sherlock of North Augusta was traveling northbound on Highway 25 in a 2005 Ford pickup when Deputy Angela Cloyd lost control of the 2007 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car she was driving during the rain and crossed over the centerline and struck Mr. Sherlock. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

Cloyd and Sherlock were transported by ambulance to the MCG Hospital for unspecified injuries. There were no other occupants in either vehicle, Edgeworth said.

Traffic was backed up a mile and held at a standstill in both directions until the scene could be cleared.

PIO Edgeworth stated Deputy Cloyd was cited for driving too fast for conditions in the collision.

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office did not offer a comment other than the issuing of a press release stating a patrol vehicle was involved and directed all inquires to the Highway Patrol.

There were at least five other single car crashes Monday that had rain and wet roads as contributing factors. No injuries were reported in any of the other crashes.

EdgefieldDaily.com was unable to make it to the crash site due to the traffic back-up so photos of the patrol car were taken at the county shop after it was towed from the scene.
