Masked man attempts bank robbery in Trenton

web posted December 16, 2006

TRENTON – If you are going to rob a bank, it might pay-off to actually plan ahead. A man found that out when he attempted to rob the First Citizen’s Bank in Trenton Friday afternoon around 4pm. After donning his ski mask he tried to enter the doors and found them locked. Getting frustrated not being able to get in the man turned and left, removing his mask. It is unknown at this time if the masked man was armed. After a robbery on January 27, 2003 the bank began keeping the doors locked and customers have to be let in by bank personnel.

Trenton Police Chief Albert Tanks said the man was described as a black male approximately 5’ 9” tall weighing about 150 pounds. He was wearing a dark ski mask, dark clothes, and a backpack. He was last seen fleeing the area on Church Street towards Highway 121 on foot.

Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputies and Johnston Police Officers began pouring into Trenton trying to capture the man. The Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team arrived on the scene a short time later and began tracking a scent from the bank up Church Street and then south on highway 121 to Woodyard Road. The dogs lost the scent near the apartment located nearby.

Edgefield County Chief Investigator Randy Doran said the FBI had been notified but the investigation would remain local since the man never made entry into the bank. “If we’re able to get a suspect they’ll get involved then,” Doran said.

Police also have reason to believe the man may have used a bicycle to leave the area.

Video tape from the bank surveillance system was being compiled and other nearby systems available was also being recovered in an effort to identify the man.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield Sheriff’s Office at 803-637-5337 or the Trenton Police Department at 803-275-4840. You do not have to provide your identity to give information.
