Trenton man charged in attempted murder, theft, assorted other charges
in Christmas crimes
web
posted December 28, 2007
TRENTON – Edgefield
County Sheriff’s
Deputies investigating two separate crimes on Christmas morning ended
up at the same house and arrested 22-year-old Michael Hunsberger at the
home he shared with his mother on Sandy Springs Road near Trenton. In
the two unrelated crimes Mr. Hunsberger is being held on charges of
assault and battery with intent to kill, assault and battery of a high
and aggravated nature, malicious injury to personal property over
$1,000, and larceny from a motor vehicle.
Hunsberger is currently being held at the Edgefield County Detention
Center awaiting a bond hearing jail officials said Thursday night.
According to police reports Hunsberger was observed by a Hayes Drive
resident breaking into a car in their driveway and stealing a Pioneer
stereo system and several CD’s. Witnesses were able to describe the
suspect and got a tag number which led the deputy to the Hunsberger
home on Sandy Springs Road.
When the deputy arrived on the scene he discovered two other deputies
escorting Mr. Hunsberger out of the home in handcuffs from another
incident. In the earlier incident Hunsberger is accused of coming home
irate and intoxicated and demanded the keys to his mother’s car. When
his demands were refused he became more agitated and his brother
stepped in and told
Michael to calm down. At that time, reports state, Michael grabbed a
knife and advanced towards his brother “in a threatening manner” when
another man stepped between the two brothers trying to stop the fight.
It was then, reports indicate, Michael Hunsberger then slashed the
knife
towards the friend creating a six inch long cut about a quarter of an
inch deep across the friend’s neck. Michael is then accused of punching
his brother before fleeing outside the home.
Once outside Hunsberger was said to have picked up a brick and threw it
through a window in the home then picked up another and threw it
through the windshield of his brother’s truck. When deputies arrived
Hunsberger fled the scene on foot.
Michael was then said to have returned to the home about fifteen
minutes
later and was found by deputies to be holding another brick threatening
his mother and those present at the home. He was summarily taken into
custody at that time.
Before being transported to jail Mr. Hunsberger took deputies to the
location of the stolen stereo and CDs which were located in a wooded
area near Casalina Drive.
The Hunsberger’s are known to area law enforcement agencies as two of
Michael’s brothers, Alexander and Julio Hunsberger, are serving life
sentences in Richmond County for the kidnapping of 16-year-old Samuel
J. Sturrup Jr. on September 3, 2001. They were convicted in
September of 2006 and face murder charges in Edgefield County along
with Steven Lewis Barnes, 29. Barnes faces the death penalty if
convicted. He too has already been given a life sentence in Richmond
County for the kidnapping.
Editor's note: South Carolina's charge for attempted murder is listed
as assault and battery with the intent to kill.
