I read in the (Edgefield) Advertiser that Bill Hixon was running for Tommy Moore's (senate seat). I've read (on EdgefieldDaily.com) that Shane Massey is running but you haven't said anything about Bill Hixon. Biased?

Editor's note: I have reported Mr. Hixon's stated intentions. He has not filed as a candidate and has not returned a call for comment. I am also trying to get comments from Rep. Bill Clyburn.

I have been following all of the discussions regarding the Edgefield County School system, and I have to say that I have been becoming more and more concerned.  This morning topped everything I have ever seen though.  My four-year-old son is scheduled to start school at WE Parker Elementary on August 22nd.  Why not the 20th like the rest of the school?  Because the teachers have to make home visits!  I have never heard of such a thing as a kindergarten teacher making a 'home visit' to 'observe the child in their home environment'.  I want the 4K teachers to know that I will have several questions for them before they come to my home.  One such question will be are they qualified or certified in child psychology to form any such opinions as to the child's welfare in thier home and do they think they will get a clear picture of the child's behavior and environment by making one home visit before school starts and is this what our tax money is paying for since it obviously isn't paying for any classroom supplies as we are now required to supply things like  "snacks for the class four or five times a year", liquid soap, baby wipes, clorox clean up wipes, tissues, in addition to they personal supplies book bag, folder, 'crayola' crayons, I found it interesting though as I was told the 4K children learn things like writing their names and letters, interesting because pencils were not on the supply list neither was glue sticks or scissors.  I am sorry if this is too long for posting, but it truly bothers me that parents need to supply snacks for the entire class when there were crates of chips and flavored water in the office( for I was told later by someone at the school that this was for administrative and teacher use.)  Each day my respect and trust for our school system declines.  I see why so many parents are choosing to sacrifice a second income in the family to be able to homeschool their children.

I would like to “Thank” Edgefield County Hospital for saving my tax money.  In reference to the Emergency Room, It is my understanding that they will see ANYONE with a true emergency insurance or not.  It is only the people that use the ER as a doctors office, they are sending to doctors insurance or not.

To the reader asking about the Full-time School Resource Officer at STHS:  There has been an SRO at STHS since 1997, and one for the middle schools since 1999.  This allocation for officers in the school system is NOT due to things "the public don't no about" as you ask.  The SRO is stationed at the school to handle all security and crimes without having to call a road deputy from the road. People ask "why do we need a cop in our schools?", but then question "why wasn't there a cop in the school" when something tragic happens.  It's a double-edged sword. The school system uses funds from state legislation allocated
for SRO's to fund the salaries.  Having an SRO at the school lets the administration focus on their duties.
SRO's handle all crimes (fights, thefts, vandalism, bullying), teaches law-related classes (state law, juvenile law, drug education), counsels students on law-related matters (moving out from home, bullying, abuse)and supervises security for all athletic events.  The SRO also maintains the security cameras, parking permits and ID's.  So, as you can see, SRO's do more than just walk the halls.Feel free to contact Deputy Reel at 275-1789 with any questions.  He is also available to talk to church groups and other organizations on current drug trends, gangs, and juveniles.

I generally read “Wandering Minds” and chuckle at some of the inane comments made by the uneducated or ignorant people that I encounter daily.  Today, however, the following comment caused such ire, I had to respond.

“RE: To the person that made the comment about Dr Roberson and the many sagas…Do I notice a familiar word like prejudice? Prejudice means to hate and dislike another color or culture…Is you Jesus?” web posted July 30, 2007
prejudice–noun
1 an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
2.any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.
3.unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, esp. of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.
4. such attitudes considered collectively: The war against prejudice is never-ending.
5. damage or injury; detriment: a law that operated to the prejudice of the majority.

I have included the definition of prejudice for everyone to peruse so that they may see that you are manipulating a word for your own ignorant ranting.  The post that you yourself are replying to was not exhibiting “unreasonable feelings…of a hostile nature”.  You need to learn the true definition of the word and not try to throw it around in conversation to further your own twisted purposes.

Also, I am not surprised you thought that you noticed “a familiar word like prejudice” in any comment because it is prejudice against sanity, rationality, and education that rules your little color filled world.  You show your ignorance and lack of fundamental English grammar knowledge throughout your post: “First I would like to ask a question?”-should have a period at the end of the sentence because it is a statement, not a question and a comma after “First”; “lets”-should be ‘let’s’ for let us; “Is you” –should be ‘Are you’ for subject-verb agreement; and “Finally, instead of name calling and judging another person, (this is what children usually do).”- should have a predicate added to make this a complete sentence instead of a fragment).

Re: post of July 30 - I am white, and was raised all my life not to see color - that prejudice is wrong and that everyone should be viewed and treated equally.  However, I have a big problem with the poster writing in talking about prejudice and hate when people are complaining about Dr Roberson and the school board. To begin with, I don't care if Dr Roberson is black, white or pink with purple polka dots. He still took advantage of Edgefield County and used our district as a stepping stone to get that year in he had to have as an assistant so he could get back to Aiken County. It's obvious he had no intention of staying here. So regardless of color, he is a disgrace and has wronged our district. Second of all, the school board's sole agenda for the last few years has been to fill the district office with the other color and culture - as the poster put it. Let's just take a moment and ask ourselves how Rev Cooks and James Bibbs "culture" has worked out for this district so far? I am moving my children out of the school district to find one of equality for all people. It's the whites that are being booted out of jobs they are qualified for and being replaced by blacks who, regardless of qualifications, are being put there because they are simply that - black and relatives of the controlling body of the school board. Now, I know that may come across as prejudiced, but it's not meant to be. If it was reversed I would have a problem with that too. All I want is for our schools to hire the MOST QUALIFIED person who will be DEDICATED to our county and not just be here because of the color of their skin or to advance their career by saying they are dedicated to our children when they are just using us for a year. "IS" I Jesus? Nope. But I sure "IS" a parent that is wanting a better education and school district for my children to grow up in. Hopefully one where they are taught proper grammar and know the difference between IS and ARE! I don't believe Jesus is a fan of reverse discrimination either - which is clearly the case in this county!

I understand that Mr. Martin, the former STHS assistant principal, is still being paid an administrator's salary.  It would be nice for all the teachers who are also certified as a principal to be paid an administrator's salary.  What's fair for the goose is fair for the gander.

Editor's note: I do not know if the same contract was continued for Mr. Martin for the present fiscal year. If it in fact did, I would tend to agree with you.

In my opinion, which everyone has one, edgefield hospital is a waste of tax money, time, and effort..The best thing that could happen to that place is to bull doze it to the ground!!! I dont agree with the insurance issue..Yes, if you have insurance you do get better treatment..Just think about the poor people who have no health insurance?? Wonder what kind of treatment they get? Probably none, because doctors and hospitals only think about money..I think a lot of health care professionals forget they took an OATH to help people...It really is an understatement to call that building a Hospital!!!!

web posted July 30, 2007

Point taken about the investigator not being on the fire dept anymore, but in my opinion it is still a conflict of interest.   Here is why  EX:  if a county vehicle is in a wreck, they dont call another county deputy to investigate, they call the Highway Patrol.  The fire depts in Edgefield Co are in a contract with Edgefield Co to provide emergency services, so that also makes them per se County Employees.  So wouldn't you think that they would call another agency into investigate multiple fires?

I agree with "when they cut the grass on the roads". I would think that SCDOT would coordinate with the the Edgefield Co. Sheriff's Dept. which I understand is is charge of litter pickup and SCDOT would inform the latter a week or so ahead of where they would be cutting grass and maybe the inmates could go out first and pick up up trash, bottles,etc.,first. I am not knocking SCDOT or Ed. Co. Sheriff's Dept., for I know both of the departments do a fine a fine job and I appreciate all and everything that they do. I do know in the
past I have seen the the inmates picking up trash, but not recently. I know there are costs envolved and the Edge. Co. Sheriff Dept. has it's hands full  being understaffed, but let all of of us try and not throw our trash out the window and put it in the trashcan at home.

RE: To the person that made the comment about Dr Roberson and the many sagas. First I would like to ask a question ? Why all the name calling and anger? Second, Do I notice a familiar word like prejudice ? Prejudice means to hate and dislike another color or culture. Third, Now lets not judge, because how you judge others, that is just the way God will judge you. Finally, instead of name calling and judging another person, ( this is what children usually do ). Pick up the Holy Bible read and take into consideration what the Holy word says about judging and hate. We need to remember, there was only one perfect person to walk on this earth, and that was Jesus. Is you Jesus?

The Edgefield County Road Crew running our National Healthcare Plan would be a bad idea.  What does a county road crew have to do with National Healthcare?  This is about the poorest analogy I've seen all week.
Maybe you need to catch up on your sleep some more.  This borders on idiotic.

Editor's note: The road crew is run by local government. The analogy is a fine example of how all government "thinks" and operates.

web posted July 28, 2007

I have a suggestion. Before they cut the grass on the roads they need to pick up the trash. They cut our road this week and now instead of a few pieces of trash we have thousands after it was chewed up and thrown all over the place. They do it all the time. HELLO! its easier to pick up a few pieces than a thousand. What college graduate came up with this plan?

Editor's note: That is your government at work. Don't you want to let them run healthcare?

I am sick and tired of hearing these five VOLUNTEER fire fighters being called “Bad Apples”.  I am NOT on any fire department, but I do know these five people.  I know that they have sacrificed their time, money, and families to do what is needed at County Line Fire Department and for the district.  These five fire fighters have repeatedly turned down family events just so that they could stay in the district in case they are needed.  These five firemen deserve to be back on the fire department and should be allowed to serve their community.  Was there any “reason” given as to why these fire fighters were terminated?  I, as a community member, would really like to know.  Do you think that the “Chief” could at least let the community know why these folks were terminated?  Were they doing anything illegal?  Were they embezzling money?  Oh…I forgot, you can steal money from County Line and not get prosecuted.  Once again, I think that these great VOLUNTEERS should be able to be back on the fire department to serve the community.

Editor's note: County Line Fire Chief Tim Malcolm said he did not have to provide a reason.

The many sagas of Dr. Roberson staying-leaving-staying, can be attributed to the four main boneheads on the school board who have a combined IQ of a eggplant. These eggplants would rather subject our school system and children to their NAACP agenda and put their 'superintendent' in office even if that person were Sadam Hussein, (he has brown skin and is racially diverse). I'll bet that Aiken county passes on Dr. Roberson, and Dr. Roberson has a religious experience that Edgefield is the place for him, and the four eggplants agree. Thus...Dr. Roberson stays. The moral to this dilemma is that this school board will remain the laughing-stock of South Carolina UNTIL voters get serious and vote these eggplants out of office. Say good by to Professor Bibbs (Professor of Dip-stick-ology), Sister Cooks (minister of the Discount-house-of-faith) and the other two followers.

To be an administrator is not an easy job. You have to have the savvy to do it. A very special person to do the job. It takes a lot of years of experience and know-how to be one. You will be surprise that you might not want to be in his or her shoes.
You have so many interesting articles and some of them are very entertaining and amusing. Thank you very much.

Funny how FCHS said a charter school would bring money to the county--why does the principal (I assume the highest paid person) live in Aiken County?  Guess he does not want Edgefield county getting of his money!!  And I heard he wanted to be Superintendent--if so he should be required to move to the county.

Dr. Roberson has done this district a HUGE favor by not accepting the supt. job. His "methods" were questioned all year anyway by most people  in the the district.  Who in the heck ever heard of teaching kids to spell backwards? That is ridiculous. However, he managed to stick around long enough to reward the teachers with a nice bonus for using his method for a year. I don't know for certain, but I'd be willing to bet these funds were allocated for something else. However, because the school board thought this man walked on water, they gave him whatever he wanted...even it it meant spending money that was intended for something else.  Please don't misunderstand me, I don't think teachers make enough as it is...they deserve SO much more money than they make. I am a huge supporter of education and all teachers.  However, I feel like Dr. Roberson's way of striding into the district with his views, spending money that shouldn't be spent, and then leaving just as quickly, is just plain wrong.  I don't understand why our board would still support him after all of this.  This "chosen one" isn't even committed enough to stick around to finish out what he started. Go figure. Then...just in case he had not made the board look foolish enough,  he offered to step up and "help out" until they find someone for the job. Why would they hire him (as interim) after what he did?  Excuse me, but if he already said the job wasn't for him and has shown he's not committed to us, then why ask him to stay?? That is just plain absurd. I am sure we are the laughing stock of the entire state.

To the employee at Edgefield Hospital that said I must of been in an area where I should not of been. This area has a handicap bathroom, are it sure was a sign for one and also a phone to use and a man and women bathroom. PLus an entrance to ER. So I went to the restroom so how could I been some where I should not.And yes on the survey they gave us with discharge orders this was put on the form and return. From what I am told the people that work long hours have special rooms to sleep in.

Could some one please explain to me why on the first fire on Bettis Academy Ext  a young man drive to the scene in a blue truck, stop at the buring house and then left the scene to go to the County Line Fire station on Bettis Academy Ext, get a fire truck, go back to the scene and never use the truck?  Was this man part of the fire dept?  He never put on any kind of fire protective equipment but yet he was doing things with the other truck that showed up.  Isn't it common practice to be fully dressed out in protective equipment while on a fire scene?

Before they were in 10x10 pens from the time I left to go to work until I got home. When the puppy police "animal control I think is the correct name"came to my home and informed me that people were calling in saying bad things about my dogs"they were wandering over to a place of business that we live next to." I had to do something and I did. Now when I get home there is no trash in my yard and no one is standing in my yard trespassing smoking under my trees. What a great thing you have done. Do keep up the great work on calling in and complaining, sometimes when you try to hurt someone it turns out to be the best thing that you can do for them. In life when I'm given lemons I make lemonade and add cheeries to make it even better. LOL

Like others, I will be a bit sad to see the old Sportsman Corner building come down. I do have fond memories going back to my high school years. It was called Taylor's Grocery back then and was run by Mr. & Mrs. Taylor. I still remember him as a big man who always wore a sort of jumpsuit or coveralls. He somehow managed to always have what looked like 3-4 days growth of beard. He & Mrs. Taylor sat behind the counter in a couple of those old metal back chairs and would wait on customers as they came in. I remember Mr. Taylor as a very personable fellow and really don't know what became of him. I am sure he has long passed on since that was over 35 years ago. My favorite thing was he had several tins on the counter of Murray cookies. I would reach down in that plastic tin and get a handful of cookies and then get a Dr. Pepper out of the cooler. It was one of those old chest type Coca Cola coolers and the water was so cold it would hurt you hand if you left it in there long at all. Yes those were the days. A simpler time for sure. I have a picture of myself and some friends sitting on the railing of an old wooden one-way bridge that crossed over Stevens Creek behind Taylors store. If I can find it, I will send it in. But progress is good and the new store will be an asset to our community for sure.

Conservative evangelical Christians are having trouble finding an appealing presidential candidate this year. Among the major Republican candidates, they note that Giuliani is pro-choice, Romney is Mormon, and McCain in 2000 called religious right leaders “agents of intolerance.” I’d like to see a pollster ask conservative Christians two questions:

1. Would you support a presidential candidate who is divorced, has estranged relations with his children, never sees his grandchildren, rarely attends church, strongly opposes a law to ban gays from teaching school, and as governor signed the nation’s most liberal abortion law?

2. Would you support him if you knew his name was Ronald Reagan?

And for that STHS is just as screwed up as Fox Creek. You have high payed administative workers that send their kids to Wardlaw and other schools, if STHS is not good enough for their kids to attend then why are they working for the Edgefield Country School District? They need to be working at their beloved high paying private school.
web posted July 25, 2007

I have not read your web site in a while since I moved. However, I was very interested to read about Mr. Martin losing his position at STHS because he does not have the required administrative credentials. As a parent of a "former" thank god, student of FCHS, I find it interesting that according to their web site, Fox Creek now has two "Assistant Administrators" to replace the Assistant Principal that left. Neither one of these people have administrative credentials or the qualification to be administrators. One (the football coach Russell Schneider) only has a bachelors degree, the other one (I heard he is Nancy Corward's son in law who was a regular teacher at NAHS) might not have a master's degree either, or if he does...it probably is not one in administration. Is that why they are not called assistant principals? I know that if they are called Assistant Principals, they have to have a regular principal license, like those at STHS and other schools. Why can Fox Creek get away with that? After all, Fox Creek is supposed to be a public school. Don't the "assistants" run the school when the principal is not there??? I certainly would not want my child in a school that is run by people who don't know a thing about how to run a school. Also, there appears to have been a mass exodus of teachers, out of 19 teachers and staff, 9 left.. Great Record!!! I guess it does not surprise me..from what I hear, Dr. Murph boasts about having the Fox Creek Board in his pocket.. It looks llike he got rid of all the good ones who don't kiss his a.... I feel bad for the tax payers of Edgefield County who continue to have to shell out big bucks to support such a low achieving school that does everything it can to get around the rules that apply to everyone else. My child was an "honors" student at Fox Creek, when she transferred she had to take all lower level classes. What gives??? As far as I am concerned, ECSD needs to take over that school and clean house.

One fire is not a concern, a second, just hours later and almost right next door raises eyebrows. Now a third at an unoccupied home raises the question that at least one of the fires may have been intentional. I have a really bad feeling about this one.

In response to the post about ECH employees sleeping, I had the same experience a couple of times but it was wiht the personel wokining in the ER. It seemed the only people awake in the entiere hospital were the ER nursing staff. WE had to sit and wait for the doctor ,and xray tech because they were in thier ROOMS sleeping. I agree if they can pay employees to sleep then they can see patients no matter thier income some of these patients are very willing to pay theyare just are unable to pay in a lump sum..

As an employee of Edgefield County Hospital, I would like to respond about the emloyee "caught sleeping". There are employees staffed by the hospital to work 24-48 hour shifts. Therefore, they stay in house and are always on stand-by. If they are sleeping, then it is because they are not needed at that particular moment and when they are needed, they are notified and immediately respond. Since this employee was in an office and out of public view, the visitor must have been in an undesignated area. Also, in response to the ER not caring for patients without insurance, if you have a  true emergency, you will NOT be turned away. The emergency room is for just that...EMERGENCIES. It is not meant to be a 24 hr. clinic. It seems that wandering minds is full of negative comments regarding ECH, but this county is lucky to have a hospital where everybody knows your name! There is great care given at ECH and since it is a smaller hospital, the care is alot more personable and warm! We are also lucky to have edgefielddaily.com and wandering minds to express our opinions and emotions, but there are appropriate means to deal with complaints about the hospital. We have a CEO who is very approachable and more than willing to listen and respond accordingly. Just remember, sometimes things are not always as they appear, AKA, don't judge a book by it's cover!!!!!

Reporters and other writers who deliberately set out to provoke racial and social tensions insult us all. I think  everyone should be treated equally, giving respect and praise where it is due and condemnation where it is deserved.
I hoped we had matured into a color blind society but apparently there are those on both sides of the ethnic fence who don't want it that way. Refusing to get along with others apparently gives them some kind of a kick.

I did not go to Aiken this morning. I took the day off. My husband came in telling me that the gas prices in Edgefield were with the ones in Augusta and north augusta so In the morning  I will stop and fill up in Edgefield. Now if we can just be close in price I have no problem spending my money here instead of elsewhere. So at least this week I will give my money to the stations in Edgefield.
web posted July 24, 2007

The station owners do have some have control over how they price gas regardless of what anyone has posted. When your purchase price goes up you of course must pass that on to make a profit. I am not an idiot. I know you must make a profit.But.... you already have gas in your tanks from the week before when it was cheaper.. I get charged the higher price on all of it. That smells like extra profit to me. Stations also change prices before gas is even delivered to them . They go by projections of what they think it will cost them for the next load. They also price on what the market will bare. I know that there is a trickle down effect and station owners don't make all the profit. You do make only a small part of what we are paying. But you do have some control.  I don't know how you set your pricing  but I know that I can find gas in surrounding areas much cheaper so I with many others that work outside Edgefield spend our money elsewhere and not in Edgefield. I really should not have singled you out. I apolize. All of our stations are too high. But I asked the readers to think about this. You would not have bought the other station if you were not making a good profit. It is true that you can not legally sell gas for less than cost. That law was made so that the small mom & pop stations could not be run out of business by the larger stations or by owners of mulitable stations that had a monopaly in an area.  That being said, that tells us that even in a price war they aren't selling it less than it cost them.  In a gas war(not less than he paid for it) 2.62 , up the road not in a gas war 2.76 to 2.79. That's more than a few pennies difference. All I am asking is that the stations in this area keep their prices in line with the surrouding areas so I can spend my money in Edgefield ie with you. You commented about business and Greed? greed is a human emotion. We all have it. I do too. I intend to be greedy and shop smart and keep all my money in my pocket for myself. As for the other poster that called me demanding. Thank you for the compliment. We get things changed when we hold people accountable and demand answers. Thank you Edgefield .com for being a vehicle for us to raise questions, make people think about things and demand changes.

I understand the county has filled the building dept. position.  The guy who used to be the Edgefield County Assessor got the job.  For some reason he left Edgefield to go to Aiken and now he's back.  Anyway, I been told that he is supposed to spend part of his time working in the Assessor's office.  Does anybody remember that Sally Fox just retired?  She was the one being paid as a consultant to the Assessor?  So now I guess a new babysitter is in town for the Assessor.  Apparently, the Tax Assessor does not know her job and so someone has to babysit and make sure she doesn't do anything wrong.  Guess what, too late!  She's already screwed up the assessments in this county.  Even worse, council knows she needs someone to do the assessing for her cause they keep paying someone to watch over her, aka Sally Fox and now Mike Reid.  How stupid is that?  Yes fellow citizens, lets pay two people to do the job that one is supposed to be doing.  Apparently, that makes perfect sense to the five looney goons who wish they had a brain!

Editor's note: The last numbers I have on Sally Fox come from 2005. For that year Ms. Bryant was paid $51,059.15 as assessor and Ms. Fox was paid $46,888.46 to assist her in addition to the normal staff of the office from previous assessors. Combined, in 2005, the position of assessor cost taxpayers $97,947.61

Almost double the salary of the mayor of Georgia's second largest city.

Mike Reed was subcontracting with Edgefield County after Ms. Fox left with the Assessor's Office prior to being named head of the Building and Planning Department. Reed served as the Edgefield County Assessor in the late 1990's.

They were surprise when the employee went in, SO if Edgefielf can pay an employee to sleep at night why can't they see someone without insurance. I'm quiet sure they half to be paying this person a good buck or too' and working nights I know most people get night pay. But the person needs an test done who does not have insurance has to have hundred dollars or so to have a test done' but it can pay for an employee to sleep? Wake up Edgefield County Hospital.

web posted July 23, 2007

To the person that "demands answers" regarding price gouging in Edgefield, I would like to clarify a few
things. The petroleum business is a very fragile and unpredictable market at the present time.  The majority of the fuel, that is supplied to gas stations in the CSRA, comes from the tank farms in the Sweetwater area.  Exchanges are set up at the "loading racks" for multiple vendors with selected suppliers, for each.  All the fuel that fills those large tanks are pumped in through a pipeline from the Louisiana/Texas refineries.  Now with the basics laid out i feel as if we can get to the pricing parts.

Traders, investors, crude prices, demand, allocation/supply issues, etc, all influence the price of gasoline.  So the price of gas at the loading facilities fluctuates daily, Mon-Fri, with the cut off time of 18:00.  Not only does the price fluctuate, but there are at least 10-20 "brands" of gasoline with varying prices. Examples: Bp, Bp unbranded, Chevron, Exxon, Citgo, Motiva, Tosco, etc. The gas has to be taken from the loading facilities to the gas stations and this is accomplished by using "tank trucks".  The companies that haul gasoline products charge by distance and weight.(Freight Rates).  So, a station that is closer to the loading facilities will pay a lesser freight rate, than those stations that are further from the loading facilities.

Now it becomes more complex than this.  There are mulitple carriers with different rates and larger chains of "gas stations" get more competitive rates b/c of the volume of loads they get transported. Examples (Names removed) would get a better rate than your local "Mom and Pops" stations.  Also, a lot of smaller stations have to go through different fuel/oil companies to purchase their fuel, b/c they are not large enough to get an exchange set up to purchase directly from the loading facilities.  That's an addtl fee. (middle man charges).

Now, the saga continues...some stations are unbranded, which means they can sell any brand of product.  Some stations are branded stations, which means they can only sell the brand of product that they represent on their banners/pumps.(examples: Exxon, Bp, Citgo,Valero, Phillips, etc, stations are
only supposed to sell their particular brand of gasoline.)  And if the price of their branded product is much higher than the unbranded stations products, then the branded store is stuck with more expensive gasoline until their next delivery, which could be a day or a week, depending on the volume they sell daily.  Some stores sell 500 gallons daily and some stores sell 25,000 gallons daily.  The tankers that deliver the fuel can legally carry up to 9000 gallons of gasoline per load.  So most customers try to minimize their charges by taking a full load with each delivery. If the store sells a low volume, that could mean that they may have fuel in the ground for a few weeks, while they watch the price change at the loading facilities and their competitor's stations.

It is illegal to sell gas below cost and it is also very stupid, from a business perspective.  An avg store
will have a mark up of 5 to 15 cents per gallon.  Now 15 cent per gallon may seem extradorinay to you but,
if you only sell a 1000 gallons a day, that is only $150.  Not even enough to cover the light bill, for a gas station.  i doubt that any station in Edgefield/Johnston/Trenton sells much more that 1000 gallons a day. This is not the entire part of what goes into petroleum pricing but it is a good start. So the basic factors that influence the price of a gallon of gasoline would include, but not limited to; brand of gas, price of gas at the time of purchase, distance from loading facility, carriers rates, broker fees, state/fed taxes, markup  percentage.  I have absolutely no affiliation with any "gas station" in Edgefield cnty or anywheres else and i am not making any excuses for the high prices of gasoline, but i did want to make you aware of the multiple factors that contribute to the price of gasoline.

Editor's note: Yes, the post is way over 300 words but it is good information to put out there for discussion so I allowed it to be placed.

There has been much discussion regarding the fees at the local hospital ER. The problem is with indigent care, there is no money to be made providing care of the indigent so lets get rid of them. Years ago University Hospital operated over 100 different clinics within it's outpatient department. Today, they operate NONE. When the hospital was built it was built under the "Hill-Burton act" which simply put meant they had to provide indigent care for 25 years from that date. In the late 80's or  early 90's that time was up; the act was not renewed and indigent care as we knew it ceased to exsist. This largely affected those in Richmond County but it also meant the women receivng care in the OB clinic now had fewer options for care. Many SC citizens went through the OB clinic at University for prenatal care. As soon as they were out from under the Hill-Burton act then University started cutting the clinics. Many area doctors rotated through as students and as residents during that time, but one by one as each clinic was stopped then the residents and students were out of the hospital. Now, Univeristy has "satellite clincs" where they go to various churches and the patients have appointments to see a doctor. Now instead of having all the residents and students to help provide care they have to ask for private practive physicians to dontate their time. Its not about providing adequate health care, its about the mighty dollar.

My quesition is this, how can you stand  there, thumping your chest ,saying how you are one of two "critical need hospitals" when you dont want to provide critical care to those in need? I don't have 150.00 dollars extra to pay,so do I have to suffer with kidney stone pain through the night or weekend because its not "life-threatening"? My insurance says its a $300.00 co-pay for ER visits that don't lead to an admission. I don't have $300.00. So I go without needed care because I have insurance but can't afford to go to my rural hospital "critical need" ER for help. Thanks alot for being there when I needed you.

Editor's note: Yes, I have not posted your comments in the past because they were baseless, but you win.

I find your comments to be amusing. I will respond this one time.

If I am a racist, as you imply in your other e-mails, why have I supported Sheriff Adell Dobey in every one of his elections from 2000 onward? Why did I support Kenneth Collier in his elections? Why have I supported other blacks for elected office? I do not see race or party. I am one of those, in my opinion, that actually believes in what Dr. King said; judge others on the content of their character and mind and not the color of their skin. My own wife kids me about a law enforcement officer she calls "cute as a button"
and my "girlfriend", who is black (I guess my wife is a racist as well). Maybe it is because I do not use the term "African American" to describe the black race that bothers you. If a white guy hit me I would not tell police it was an "European American", I would say a "white" guy. I guess I could use the term of the NAACP and say it was a "Colored" guy if he were black. I'm sure you would be just as happy. The problem you have does not lie with me, it lies within yourself.

So, I hope you are happy now. I thought we cleared this up in our personal conversations, but obviously not.

Closest I ever came to "signing up" was when that Chinese man stood in front of that tank in Tiemann (sp?) as for the person that claims that chief aston is part of the good system and want help, well i know chief aston very well and sounds like to me like chief aston would not do a good ol' boy favor. know why? because he is a true american hero, he is a true law man. i'll give a little more to go with that. chief aston would be more that glad to help you. chief aston would use good commen sense to handle you problem. but maybe you or who ever is feel your head with non-sense don't have enough common sense to figure that out. also chief aston don't have any family in south carolina. but he does have in-laws and he has had to arrest one of them. i bet if you took the time stop and think (with some common sense) you would find out that cheif aston know a lot more about the law that you think. if you think, you would find out that he started out under the former chief and chief aston speaks highly of him no matter what the public saids. also i don't think there is a council member in johnston that does not support chief aston. if not, that's thier lost. chief aston is not just the chief of johnston but he is part of johnston just like ever citizen there.
and for the person that has it out for chief aston, he will still risk his life for you.

Notice the word "said" I didn't even know where the jack or the spare tire could be found but I knew that there should be directions in my owners manual and there were. It would have been easy if it were'nt for the fact that the weather man just pain told a story. He said a high of around 95. It was at least 200! I had on my favorite blouse and the book said my tire was under the van! Get the picture. God answers prayers. I already knew that and sometimes he doesn't make us wait on the answer. Up pulled a pickup truck. A very nice man stepped out. He was wearing a cap, a crisp white shirt and blue trousers. He went to work changing my tire. I was worried he would ruin the white shirt. You can imagine what a tire looks like after riding underneaf a van all it's life. He changed my tire but my spare seemed to be in bad shape so he followed me all the way to a gas station where he put air in it for me. I tried several times to pay him. Even offered to at least buy him something cold to drink at the station but he just said he was glad to be able to help me. I asked his name and he told me it was George Bush and gave me his card and invited my family to his Church if we were ever in the area. We have so many awfull things happening in our world today. We forget that there are wonderful people still around and lending helping hands. Referring to your post and the hot-dog post further down the page There seems to be uncertainty of how many convenience stores there are in Edgefield and how many we operate. To set the record straight, we operate three of the five convenience stores that serve fuel.

You are calling for a boycott because our fuel is so much more expensive than surrounding markets. You really need to compare fuel prices more than once to get a good picture. There are times we are cheaper and there are times we are not. I challenge you, Mr. Boycott, to monitor and compare all of our prices against all surrounding markets over three months. Compare the soft drink, tobacco, cigarette and beer prices while you are at it. Afterwards, call me and let’s go over your results. To get my office number, go in any store and request.

Our fuel pricing strategy is based on our cost and cost can fluctuate wildly each day….as much as 11¢ in a single day. You commented on a 10¢ difference between our price and Aiken / North Augusta. I believe you are pointing to a period about three weeks ago when the North Augusta market was embroiled in a price war. For the record, I will not sell fuel below cost…that’s careless disregard for our 43 employees and their families. You should also know that each morning I personally drive the surrounding markets while visiting our other stores, so I know where pricing is in other markets. We are always very competitive in all markets.

If anyone would like to know more about our operation, I invite you to call me personally. I live in Edgefield. We can even talk about other things like: how much time and money we donate each year in Edgefield County, our local payroll dollars affecting the local economy, local tax revenue, and believe it or not, how we may have saved you money today. Greed is never a good business practice.

Here's some "fun facts" Medicaid reform. The governor's idea of medicaid reform is a joke. I vote republican 90% of the time but this is where the republicans are clueless. They really have no idea when it comes to true health care reform. What the governors program boils down to is you get rewarded if you don't spend over $2500.00 a year, this includes prescriptions. But you can still use your 12 visits. Has he ever seen what doctors charge these days? That means if you have high blood pressure or any other illness there is no way, if on the other hand you ignore your health you get rewarded. The other part says you pay a percentage of the fees. It is not based on income level. So if you are out of work, how are you suppose to pay? How can you afford to get care? Isn't that part of the reason for Medicaid to provide health care to LOW INCOME people? If they could pay dont you think they would? Get a clue. The system is designed to keep you down. If you work then you are not eligible for Medicaid because of the poverty guidelines, so you stay in the system until you can find a job with benefits. Why not allow persons to work part time to "buy in" to a state health plan? Then at least they could find work and not lose coverage. This took Four years? I'm still waiting on child support to be centralized. Why not put your energy into finding deadbeat dads (or moms)? Make them pay for the state having to take care of their child. If a non custodial parent can provide adequate in state health care coverage, but does not follow the court order and provide the insurance then the state should send them then bill for the childs care. What's the countdown to when this useless governor is out of office, Hey Tommy, take Sanford with you! Please.

Time to Take Inventory
Are we not getting close to the new tax notices being prepared?  How many 2007 cases are still open in the Assessor’s Office?  How many properties were changed in 2007 from the original notices?  How many properties were listed in 2007 to pay tax?  Has the Appeals Board prepared any documentation on the cases they heard and issued rulings?  Has the County Assessor, County Administrator, County Council and Appeals Board reviewed the actions of all parties to determine why so many taxpayers were told different stories and different standards applied when they appealed they tax notices?  What is considered an acceptable “change rate” for the County Assessor?  So many questions and statements about the way of doing business and not one, mind you – not one, response by any responsible person has addressed the issues.  The lack of a quality control system for county business is so blatant it boggles one’s mind.  Is the next round of tax notices going to be as unfounded and inaccurate the same as this year?  Don’t just say this will take care of itself with the new state laws and the new sales tax because, it will not.

Will all properties automatically go up 3%?  That is not the intent of the law the citizens of South Carolina voted for.  Properties do not automatically go up in value, as a matter of fact, with depreciation almost all properties should go down.  The intent is too limiting the increase to 15% for five years, 3% a year, based on time of appraisals.  So, all taxpayers of Edgefield should not see any change in property values for 5 years, or the next appraisal year mandated by the State.  I have always been told to be careful of individuals like we have in county positions, especially those who hire others who are just like themselves.

It is my understanding that the company that has purchased the gas station ( hotdog one) now owns all the stations in Edgefield excpt the one by McDonalds. If I am correct then I guess we now know who to bycott about the difference in gas prices between North Augusta and Aiken and then Edgefield. Last week I found over a .10 difference in prices and I am not talking about just one or two stations in those areas. If North Augusta and Aiken can be .10 a gallon cheaper then I smell another something fishy in Edgefield. I would like an answer. If not, then I will fill up in those other towns or use the station next to McDonalds even if it is little higher just to drive my point home. I also find sometimes gas is cheaper in Johnston. So what gives?

Regarding the answer you gave about the person in Johnston with a problem with getting the law enforced properly, it's hard to go to the police chief with this when the problem is him. As you can see from the emails he sent you and the attorney generals' office, he attempted to talk to quite a few other officials and was also told to deal with the chief. What would you feel like if this occured in your yard with a young daughter present? I think I have read your comments long enough to know you wouldn't stand for it either. This was a childish, redneck thing to do but the way law enforcement dealt with it was legally and ethically wrong. The whole thing is smelling fishy to me. I guess it's true what is said about this county, " It's not whether you're right or wrong, it's who you know.

There's a certain Johnston councilman that I usually don't agree with anything he says, but his warnings and fears that he expressed when the present police chief was nominated have proven to be true! This councilmann stated, at that time that he felt this one had to many ties and relative connections in the town to police fairly. From what I was told today, the good ole' boy attitude is alive and well in Johnston! I'm sure everyone will be hearing about this story in the next few days. He needs to learn the law. I know he is young and inexperienced, as a chief, but one thing he definitely needs to learn is that the people of Johnston will not stand for a chief who plays favorites! So what if someone loses one customer. Don't sell your integrity for such a small reason! The law should be enforced as it is written.

Editor's note: If you have a complaint about the Chief of Police you should call and schedule a meeting with him to discuss the matter. If that does not work contact your councilman, and then the mayor.

Why would the town of Johnston start ordering police vehicles from a car dealership in Georgia? Don't they realize there will probably be repercussions in the future when they need radio work or vehicle maintenance? This will hurt local merchants as it already has when they changed where the new vehicles are marked. Why can't Johnstons' money be spent in Johnston? Are vehicle and radio maintenance going to be done here or are they going to take them to Georgia? If they stayed where they were they only had to go across the street! Is the Ga. dealership going to come to Johnston for these things? They are slowly changing everything to where the Sheriffs' Dept. does business. With the few cars Johnston has it would be to thier and the towns' advantage to buy local. After I read where they were ordering  from another state, I had to ask these questions. I know, being a former deputy, the chief has contacts with them but it shouldn't be at the expense of the towns' merchants. Why can't they do like Edgefield and support the merchants? Our merchants pay taxes to the town so why can't the town support them? Why is the town abandoning them when they have supported the town so long?

Editor's note: The Augusta dealership offered the lowest price plus the longest warranty, exceeding the life expectancy of the patrol car. The bids are open to all area dealerships. Contact your town council person to get their explanation of their vote to approve the purchase.

Over here in Aiken we have what is called a Christian broadcasting station (WAAW), but the station has given a public forum to a lunatic referred to as Ryan B. I have heard that this racist hatemonger has served time in a federal prison but have no details about him other than that. The only information given me on this matter is that it involved Medicare fraud. Ryan B was a champion of disgraced Augusta senator Charles Walker, who is spending his days making license plates, furniture or whatever they do in a federal penal institution. Whatever Walker is doing it is best suited to his suspect talents. Ryan B was at his best a few days ago, planning a get-out-of-jail welcoming party for Walker but a state appeals court ruled he must remain in jail. Hooray for the justice system! Ryan B spends his mornings ranting and raving about the bad white people who have done the black people wrong but everything he says is filled with generalities. He never cites specifics, but constantly refers to the monstrostities ginned up in his third grade mind. He is practically an illiterate and the station owner finally has realized that Christianity will be best served by ending Ryan B's tenure as a radio talk show host. Like his fellow talk show hosts he always does most of the talking and at times sounds deranged. He is promising fireworks for his last day on the job and I look forward to that spectacular. Ryan B will be off the air at the end of July and I am counting down the days.

I have read some very favorable and some less than favorable "insights" written about Mr. Pettigrew, the County Administrator.  He is a very capable, intelligent man who was handed a giant mess from the last administrator and the current County Council members.  From his predecessor, Mr. Adams, we are currently faced with a serious problem of space due to the Senior Services Building burning to the ground.  Mr. Rikard was exactly right when he stated that the county did not maintain the buildings as they should.  The County Council members voted to resolve personality conflicts by moving three offices around at the cost of $60,000.00 plus.  For a number of years others have been allocated space in county property that is very under utilized, perhaps necessary, but a gross waste of space.  DJJ for example has space in the two story building next to the one that burned and occupy the space less than four days a month.  Pre-Trial Intervention and Juvenile Arbitration has space in the same building and occupies the space less than four full days per month.  Upper Savannah/One Stop has consumed another large space in the building and utilizes the space 3 hours a day two days per week.  What a waste!  Services for Veterans Affairs, Cornerstone, and Senior Citizens are utilized daily.  Senior Citizens, in the process of building a new building is struggling to continue services in the Town Gym.  GLEAMNS has a nice building in Trenton, I am not worried about "Sister Sallie" - Sallie Cooks - School Board Chairperson - I am sure she will land upright somewhere to her advantage and certainly not to the citizens of Edgefield County.  I hope Mr. Pettigrew will take a close look at the resources available in Edgefield County and work toward better utilization.  I know it is not a problem he created but one he inherited.  God forbid, the County Council get in on allocation of space.

fear being labeled a racist. I wonder what Mr. Bibbs' (deleted) rap sheet would reveal? I cannot believe there is not a written provision to qualify for the school board which states a person must not be aconvicted felon to hold office. If no such provision exists, then we must get our hands on the regulation if such exists governing school board representatives and legally change what is not in writing to protect our schools from being overtaken by radicals. It's time to look at credentials, rap sheets and past performance before we vote someone into office.

I am very disturbed at the obvious personal, biased attack the your site took (and continues to take) on the Fox Creek High School staff. I have no particular interest in the school as I do not live in that area and do not know all the details about it's existence.  I do, however, intend to build and move my family to the Merriweather community.  It is obvious in your reporting on the High School that there is a personal vendetta against it and it's staff.  I find it particularly appalling to call the staff "idiots" for evacuating the school when another school in the are received a bomb threat.  What would you have said if they did not take this precaution and something did happen.  I feel you would have been calling for some "heads to roll."  I see their precautionary measure as very justified.  We can not go "to far" or be "over-cautious" when it comes to our children.  But it was obvious by your writing that this was not the real iss ue.  Your real issue is a personal vendetta with the school's existence.  Perhaps you should spend more time with whatever your real agenda is and do not cover it up with attacks on the school's staff for taking a very "educated" and wise action.  I am very disappointed in this site for allowing this type of personal attack to make it's posting.  Edgefield County deserves better.

I would vote for O J Simpson before I would vote for some of these boffoons. The Justice department, or Jerrys kids or whoever drew up the boundries made sure that these people or their clones would be elected. I live in Mr. Bibbs district and down here they will vote in a criminal, pediphile or Muslim terrorist as long as He or she is " One of ours !!!!!  ( My apology to Jerrys Kids for grouping them with the school board ).

2nd point- Dr. Roberson is a good man and the right man for the job. He is too smart to be railroaded by the Board, so he wants insurance ( 60 days to leave ) in case of the inevitable stupidity and Biased decisions made by these Clowns. ( My apology to clowns for grouping them with our school board ).

3rd & final point - Please don’t bring back (deleted) Mr. mathis. There is just something missing with this man.

About ECER, I understand the thing about seeing emergencies only.  One Sunday when my child was 1 yr old, he fell and hit his forehead, it immediately swollen up to the size of a golf ball.   Me being a new mom didn’t know how serious it was.  So I immediately went to the emergency room.  I had to wait for 1-2 hours to be seen because a family of 4 (dad and 3 kids) were there for COLDS!  So why I am anxiously waiting with a crying 1 year old and the Dr. on call casually walks by smiling while tending to the COLDS knew my son was ok because he was responsive, but I did not!

I have yet to understand WHY Dr. Keesley wasn't asked to hold the interim supt. job? She hadn't been "gone" a full week when the vote took place, so she was the logical solution. I will never understand how our board can elect someone who just "snubbed" the district, over someone who has dedicated over 30 years of her life to us! Dr. Keesley has proven time and time again that she is committed to the residents (and most importantly, the students) of Edgefield County. She knows the job...and knows it well. It just makes NO SENSE why Dr. Roberson would be asked to take the interim job over Dr. Keesley ...unless skin color wasn't a factor. Otherwise, how can it be explained????  Our school board has to stop looking at skin color when filling these positions, and put the most qualified person in the job...whether he/she is black, white, purple or green!!

As for those who say "Dr. Roberson saw the writing on the wall" where Bibbs and Cooks are concerned...He had all last year as asst. supt. to see how those two operate. If he wasn't committed to our school district, then he should never have accepted the position in the first place. Now, we are left with "leftovers" from which to chose  our supt. Other qualified applicants have now signed a contract with someone else. It is unfortunate that Dr. Roberson didn't notify the board in the spring (when he was offered the contract) that he was having second thoughts.

Dr. Mathis would be an excellent choice. The people in Edgefield know his committment to education and his love of our district. However, he, like Dr. Keesley, had no support from the board. He was smart enough to find employment elsewhere and our school board didn't even ATTEMPT to stop him from leaving!   I seriously doubt Dr. Mathis would ever consider returning to this district unless some serious changes are made on our school board. If changes aren't made, many of our teachers will leave for other districts.  Our children deserve better than this!!!!!

I have been reading everything I can get my hands on regarding the Supt. position in Edgefield County. As a concerned parent in the district, I feel I must speak. This whole situation has gotten out of hand. The school board MUST be stopped.  It appears that their agenda has absolutely nothing to do with the well-being of our district. The racism MUST stop.  It is 2007, for Pete's sake...why does everything have to be black and white? Why can't the most qualified person get the job?   This leads me to say this...we HAD the most qualified person in the district to fill Dr. Keesley's shoes once she retired, and our school board let him go without a fight. Dr. David Mathis was as dedicated to this district as anyone has ever been, and our school board let him walk out the door to Aiken County. Why? so they could land Dr. Roberson, who has recently shown his lack of loyalty and dedication to our children and district employees. He has absolutely NO BUSINESS being interim supt. It makes no sense why he'd even be offered the job after what he did. Once again, our school board has made a foolish decision...seems to be the only thing they know how to do!

It made far too much sense to ask Dr. Keesley to stay as interim supt.  I mean, heck, she knows the district like the back of her hand, and she is far too dedicated and loyal to our children to ask to stay on board. The school board probably voted against her return because they were fearful she'd decline their offer. After all, she had very little support from this board during her tenure. They couldn't see what an asset Dr. K  was. I just wish the people of Edgefield County would wake up and do something about this school board. They must be stopped. Not only are teachers going to start leaving left and right, but our children are going to begin to suffer.

We all need to ban together and do something!  Anyone know how we can convince Dr. Mathis to come back to Edgefield? I hope he reads this and realizes that many people in "these parts" want him back!!!!!

Editor's note: Dr. Keesley said informed the board she would be willing to act as interim when contacted during the meeting.

If however, you are trying to portray him as the victim in all of this, its the wrong move. Why create more negative publicity? Keep your mouth shut to call in shows, give a interview telling your side in a controlled environment, not one where you are always on the defense, and let the court decide. In my opinion she did more to hurt his reputation by calling in and calling everyone else a liar.  Actually, as the old saying goes."Me thinks you protest to much".

The poster who wrote, "For the record, not all the black people in Edgefield County support Sallie Cook and James Bibbs," makes a very good point.  I have spoken with several people of different races, and none have condoned the actions of the school board.  I also want to remind people who have complained about the board members who have consistently been in the minority lately that they are just that.  It appears that they have continued to support the district and vote as such, but two or three does not a majority make.  It is up to the citizens and voters in the county to hold all members accountable for the decisions they make.  (Like - why they hired a person who may or may not be around by the time school starts rather than the person who just retired 'honorably' , who could do the job as well as she has in the past, and who we know will be here until a replacement is found.  Was this done for personal or professional reasons?)  Children first!! Politics, racial unrest, and personal disagreements should have no place in our schools - after all, aren't we supposed to be teaching by example?

it seems to me that Nicki Smiths sister whom defended her brother needs to wake up. Why would young girls throw themselves at an grown man when there is plenty of boys around there own age? When all of this comes to light and he is prosecuted wont she feel like the fool. And as for Mrs. Smiths comments, she came off sounding like an ignorant redneck blaming the town for her husbands actions. I know they will write something back bashing me for my say, but you know what, my opinion of all of you will not waver because I believe these young girls did no wrong on their part, and why would they Mr. Smith is not exactly good looking in my book. This is not to comment on the culpability or lack thereof of Nikki Smith, but to make two observations
on the situation.  First, there is another gymnastics studio in Edgefield county where the girls where
instructed not to wear underwear under their leotards.  I believe this is standard practice for gymnasts.
The owner of this studio is female, as are all the employees.  Second, we must be very, very careful when
we rush to judgement.  People's lives can be ruined over incautious remarks.  Let the police work this out.

There were numerous girls over the years sexually abused at one of our schools many, many years ago by a man. We could only wear dresses to school then. He told us we could not wear shorts under our dresses. There were reasons for that and only us little girls would know why. When I read the article about those little girls they couldn't wear panties under their leotards, it brought back many bad memories. There was only one reason for that. As far as his wife making the remark about this hick town, GET OUT we don't want folks of your caliber here messing with our children. I have warned my own children since they were old enough to zip us their britches about people like that. You parents out there I suggest you do the same. Don't let this happen to your child.

Editor's note: If you were abused by an adult when you were a child you can still report that information to police.

Editor's post: Okay, I am not going to take sides here, but there are things that have been said that I just have to comment on. Nicki Smith's wife called me today and said that if girls in her dance class wear panties under their leotards it makes people look at the private areas of the young girls. Now, I have two daughters, and both at some time has been involved in gymnastics or dance and never were we told to let our children come to class bare bottomed in their tights. There were performances held in public when the instructors asked that the girls wear pantyhose rather than underwear. I can understand that.

A question I never got an answer to was why, in the private classes, did the girls need to wear no underwear during the class. Who is watching other than a few parents (at best), other students, and the instructors. The basic question is, why would it matter?

I get the feeling that something is not kosher in all of this but I may be wrong.

And no I am not unemployed, nor have multiple babies’ daddies or watch Jerry Springer. I work a full time job and pay my taxes.  It is people like this poster who want to put all people of color in the same boat. I don’t know what the agenda of this school board is but I do know that our children are not their first concern. I do not live in either Mrs. Cook or Mr. Bibbs’ district but I do hope that neither one is reelected again when election time comes. So please before you comment that all black people are supporting this “clown show”, let it be known that there are still many of us that have morals and high standards and do the right thing. These two people (Cook and Bibbs) will surely hurt any other competent black people that decide to run for the board at election time because people will believe that this is the way that we all conduct ourselves when we get into positions of power.

Editor's note: Just because teens make charges does not mean an arrest will happen. The matter has to be investigated and all parties, those making the charges and those the charges are made against, have to be  verified. That takes time. Cases brought by the Sheriff's Office end up with a conviction over 95% of the time.

I guess I am confused. I am one of the posters discussing EBT. My comments were for someone asking how she needed it and could not get EBT and others could. My comments had nothing to do with a post about a mammogram. I have empathy for anyone that finds themselves in a bind through no fault of their own. But excuse me... It is my business because my tax money pays for it. It got in such a mess because people like me assumed that our government would spend our tax dollars wisely and did not make it our business to see that it happened that way. As a tax paying citizen ( and I pay plenty) when anyone gets public assistance it is my business why they got it and how it is used. I hope someone out there can point you in the right direction to get the help you need. Oh, by the way, shouldn't it be" makes me" and not "make's me." I don't think anyone said that being poor makes you stupid or ignorant. Making grammer or spelling mistakes is no judge of that. And if you have been reading Wandering Minds you should know all about our school system.

I am really sad to learn of the resignation of our SC State Senator Tommy Moore. Senator Moore was always willing to help. Over the last 15 years I have had to seek the help of his office for numerous dealings within the State. I can't remember a time when he didn't help and resolve the problem. When a local government agency was giving me the run around I contacted his office and it was resolved the next day. I can't say the same for the person he recommended to take his place. He is was able to carry Aiken County as a democrat because he wa always willing to work and not play partisan politics. This is a huge loss for the people of his Senate district. I am disappointed in the way he left and the fact he left to take a lobbying position for the legal loan sharking business.

Why haven't you posted anything on his resignation?

Why would Mr. Moore leave a position that has great influence in helping citizens of South Carolina to take a position that will have a great influence in hurting the citizens of South Carolina?  All American Citizens should demand a return to the “good old time of usury laws”.  Maybe the State of South Carolina should take a hard look of forbidding Mr. Moore practicing his newfound skills as lobbyist in this State.

I see that someone wrote to support the Chief of the (County Line) Fire Department. No one said that the as you called them "Bad Apples" didn't support him as Chief. But from what you read on the editors post of what happened at the meeting how can you call them "Bad Apples" for standing up for their rights.  So you also say they were "Bad Apples" for just wanting to protect their lives by getting what they need to help the community.  If you had attended the Board Meeting you could have seen what it was all about. Or you just ask someone like, your husband or boyfriend that may be a part of the Department what happened?  It was a public meeting, as it should be, and anyone that lives in the district can attend. The people that stood behind the Chief that night were the same people that have also stated that he was not doing right as a Chief and that he should be removed. Yes, they are his supporters now, but watch, in due time, they will turn on him as before. I'm not saying you are wrong for your support for the Department or the Chief. I support the Department because I live in the District. But do you support the open comments that he made about your tax money being taken by a former firefighter and nothing was done about it?  I cant.  That money was there for the Department to use, not for someone's own gain. He knew about it and did nothing.  Did he report it to anyone?  No because his (alleged) words were "that was not enough money to worry about to doing anything."  So I guess if you had a criminal break into your house and steal from you, would you be as forgiving? What is the difference?  That person took what was yours, his, as well as all of ours that live in the district.  Question for you, since you support him, which is your right and I don't fault you for that, do you think what he did was right?  Like another person wrote before how can you be terminated from giving off your own time?

I also believe Dr. Murph would be a great superintendent, but not for this district. He is too nice a person to survive this snake-pit district. The greatest superintendent in the country would not survive in this district until Bonehead Bibbs and Sister Sallie (plus the other two school board morons who follow their lead) are put out of office. These two incompetents and their followers are willing to destroy this district's school system in order to promote their form of racial equality. If one of their relatives or friends mysteriously gets nominated for the Superintendent's office, the caring citizens of this county should file a legal response to stop Bonehead Bibbs, Sister Sallie and their followers. At least a legal response would put Bonehead Bibbs,
Sister Sallie and their moronic followers on hold, until the state could step in and sort out the mess.

COST OF DOING EDGEFIELD COUNTY TAXPAYERS’ BUSINESS???
Let me see if I get this straight and how many county taxpayers’ agree?  Also, will Pettigrew or any Council Member reply?

First, I understand we have employee(s) not working a full 40 hour work week and still getting 100% of benefits paid, including insurance.

Second, I now read Administrator Pettigrew stated at the July Council Meeting the cost of the insurance for county employees would rise 9.7% in January, 2008.  I can only assume that promotions, questionable bonuses and, Cost-Of-Living increases will be forthcoming.

Now, how many employees does the county have working less than a 40 hour work week?     This Question already asked…
How many of these jobs can be eliminated by others picking up the duties of that individual?
How many positions can be combined, thus eliminating positions?
Why do we have less than 40 hour work weeks?  If necessary, why not prorate the benefits?
Let us take the County Assessor’s Office previously mentioned.

County Assessor works less than 40 hours a week but get 100% insurance….
How many 40 hour employees in the office?
How many part-time employees in the office?
If yes, can the duties be shared with the other employees and positions be eliminated?
If yes, why does the Assessor need another employee?  Better yet, use another part-time employee(s) of the county to do the duties of the new employee to be hired.

These are simple questions the Manager(s) responsible for the Assessor’s Office should ask and provide the answers to the taxpayers.  Don’t ask the Assessor because she’s apparently not a 40 hour a week employee but, receives full benefits that will increase at least 9.7% in 2008.
Simply questions that can be applied to every function of the county.

This counties' hard working, tax paying parent should not rest until this school board is cleaned out from top to bottom or gets some guts. The other board members are either in line with Bonehead Bibbs and Sister Sallie or are afraid to confront them for fear of some racial repercussion. Tip toeing through the tulips with this school board is not the answer. It's time for the board members who want to serve the community to take off the boxing gloves and attack Bonehead Bibbs and Sister Sallie who should stay home with their voters and watch Jerry Springer educate TV Land.

Anyone can apply for EBT. There are no application fee's. I was asking because I didn't know what to do. I called the "Cancer Answer" line, the woman said I needed to be seen within three days. She said someone would call back. They didn't. I don't abuse the system, and as a result I'm not sure what is available to me.

What really got me angry was people's lack of empathy towards my issue. I am by no means  saying "poor me", but I am more than a little disheartened with people's reaction's when I asked for information. Shame on you!  EBT and mammogram's are two different things, like comparing apple's to orange's. What ever  happened to a kind word or gesture? for our children.  I'd definitely like to exercise it now, away from ECSD. Funny how logic can run in both directions and how it smokes out hypocrisy which is so prevalent in our government schools. As for the issue of Dr Brightharp being positioned to replace Dr Roberston...I say "Go right ahead"....since she's coming from Allendale which got taken over by the state...it will only speed the process to which the state can come in and run "Archie and Jughead" off the school board.  As I told a friend...sometimes things have to get worse before they get better.
Lastly for "Archie and Jughead" -Bibbs and Cooks-...they're doing more harm then good to the black community.  Their racist nepotism to the exent of supporting incompetence will only reinforce in bigots minds that blacks are incompetent to lead.  I don't believe this....but you couldn't tell that from the idiocy of those two in their unconscionable support of Martin and Brightharp.

Get on your computer and web search....Superintendent South Carolina Schools.com.  You will see a picture of Dr. Rex and how to email him. There is enough nepotism, corruption and miss-management by these two boneheads to attract outside attention.

I would make them aware of the bullet in the roof so they can take precautions. Are you the same people that complained about the idea of a race track?

don't know.  It's like why do I take both the Aiken Standard and The Augusta Chronicle because the Augusta Chronicle is far better reading than The Aiken Standard.

It doesn't happen all the time but some times when I pull up an article the writing part goes behind the right column of advertisements and you can't read it.  This is the case on the article about the wreck.

Editor's note: This problem seems to occur sometimes with readers who use Window's IE browser with a wide screen monitor. The best solution is to click the box located at the top right-hand side of the browser (the box between the dash and the X) and reduce the size of the browser to 750 pixels or the width of the top banner. This should realign the page and make the text available. I do not get the same problems reported by users of Netscape or FireFox web browsers.

Aiken County is raising property taxes. What a surprise! To their credit, Aiken County did not reassess property last year. So they didn’t see the hugh tax increases we saw in Edgefield County. They have an explanation, legitimate or not. They claim population increases required more police, more police cars, more emt vehicles etc. Edgefield (the gang of five) used these same excuses to justify our reassessment. Of course our population has been stagnant for more then five years.

Last year and the previous year our state politicians concluded property owners needed tax relief. They actually past legislation that reduced property taxes.  Of course our “gang of five” disagreed. Any guess as to what they’ll do this year? Here’s a suggestion. They can raise the milage rate because of global warming!

We went to the River Blast and it was fantastic!!! I wish Edgefield or the county would do something like that.We went to the Turkey Federation display too and it was nice. It just seems to me that we have enough big corporations around here that they could put something together to bring people over here instead of us going to Augusta on the 4th. They could put it on at the football field at Strom Thurmond like they did for the veterans a while back. That was really nice. They could make it a day long event and I know a lot of people that would rather stay here than go to Augusta.

Editor's note: EdgefieldDaily.com would promote and contribute to such an endeavor. I would suggest a more central location such as the Edgefield County Industrial Park in Trenton on Highway 25 to make parking available to a large number of people and vendors. It would be a great opportunity for the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce to step forward and take the lead to use the event to promote the county to those outside of our area.

With the past information about the County Assessor’s hours of pay being made public, is it true that you only need to work 30 hours a week to be considered a full time employee of Edgefield  County?  If so, let’s see some bad news for taxpayers.  Consider two county employees making the same annual salary, $52,000 per year.

Employee with Forty Hour Work Week
County Assessor

Works 40 hours a week and gets paid for 40 hours a week ($25.00 an hour)
Works 35 hours a week and gets paid for 40 hours a week ($28.57 an hour)

Works 40 hours a week, which is 2080 work hours per year.
Works 35 hours a week, which is 1820 work hours per year or, (32.5 less days per year)

Sick days
Same number of Sick days

Vacation days
Same number of Vacation days

Compensatory time/overtime after 40 hours
Compensatory time/overtime after 35 hours when already paid for 40 hours

National and State Holidays
Same National and State Holidays

Breaks and Lunch (required)
Same Breaks and Lunch (required)

Health Insurance fully paid
Same Health Insurance fully paid

Retirement
Same Retirement

How can anyone justify a position as the County Assessor being less than 40 hours a week?  Also, in the new budget we hire an additional person for the Assessor’s Office, is this new person less than 40 hours and getting all of the benefits of a 40 hour employee?

How many employees does Edgefield County have working less than 40 hours a week and getting full benefits?

Just to clear the record, the terminated firefighters were only asking for what was due to them as the law states. They were asking for TB Shots and Bloodborne Pathogen classes, as the state law requires. But instead, they get kicked off. The Chief states he doesn't have to give them a reason. But none of this firing stuff came into the picture until this was brought to light. I didn't know that someone could be fired from giving of your free time and helping the community. I feel like they were the most active and reliable to the department and Community. They would spend most of all of their free time at the fire department or doing something in the community involving the department. CLFD has always had a bad name and to me this again shows the reason why. One firefighter stated that the department has not had this much problem ever at the department. This is so far fetched from the truth and he knows this as he has publicly stated this fact. It seems as he was one of the ones also that stated the chief needs to go but now he is backing him for what reason maybe his new “Assistant Chief” who knows the truth.  Two ex-fireman asked to be on the board. They were told that the meeting had already been closed.  In fact, the Board Meeting was not officially closed.  There was a motion made to close the meeting, but no second motion. So with this their actions of asking to be on the board were just, but the board thought other wise. To me the Fire Board should not be in the position they are in due to the Board allowing this to go on and allowing the chief to run the department and board. The board should be on the behalf of the Community not the Chief.  The reason they want to get on the Fire Board is to assure the Community that their best interest is at heart and the department is ran as close to the law as it can be with the small amount of money the Department has to use. Yes the community should have a board that is run by the citizens of the area but the citizens need to step up and help. I send out an open invitation to the community, stand behind your fire department and get what is right in your district.  Come out and join the board and make it right. By no means am I saying that anyone is doing anything illegal except for the cover up of the money missing and being told that was not enough money to prosecute where is his heart…not with your department. I hope this will get someone from the community to step up and assist us with cleaning up County Line Fire Department's name.

I too live near the area of the testing grounds.  Perhaps because of our military background as a kid, perhaps when my father retired we still lived near proving grounds, or perhaps because I live in rural Edgefield county now with my children, and am woken up early in the morning by shotgun blasts from the hunters on the leased property next to us from august until.......  It doesn't bother me, my family, or my neighbors.  As for the five+ miles radius the lady spoke of, I don't believe there is a five+mile radius in Edgefield where ther is no residence anymore.  I know that hearing the blasts, the machine gun blast are annoying and unless you are familiar with the sounds etc they can be scary.  I also know that this is necessry, these tests, products etc are necessary.  My father fought in Vietnam, my grand father died in Japan, my father-in-law served proudly in WWII, my cousin is in Iraq as are many friends.  If they needed to move in my back yard, in order to protect my friends and family from Iraqi car bombs, land mines, ieds, and machine guns, I would say "Can I help clear the land for you!"  There is a need for the products this company is making NOW.  Hopefully there won't always be that need and you can go back to just hearing the shotgun, rifle, and black powder weapons, that we in rural Edgefield County hear from dawn to dusk during hunting season.  As for now though, let them be and God Bless our men and women in uniform.

How does (County Line Fire Chief) Tim Malcom and his wife get to be on the fire baord? As I understand things the chief gets to break any ties in votes. So he and his wife can get one other person to agree with him and he gets to break the tie vote. How is that fair?

Editor's note: I do not know if that is the situation, but I do agree that 1/3 of the Fire Board membership being occupied by a single family, much less a husband and wife of the Fire Chief, is irregular. I would prefer no member of the related fire department be a member of the board. It should be a citizen oversight panel. They spend our tax dollars and it should be the taxpayer that oversees and elects those that control that process.

To the northside citizens complaining (on WJBF Ch6) of the noises coming from the Force Protection  Industries Range:  The sounds you are hearing are those of American soldier's lives being saved.  Products are being tested that will protect our soldiers from roadside bombs, mines and other weapons used to kill our men and women.  There are no toxic wases, no air or water pollution being produced.  We're at war!  We've not been asked to sacricfice much.  The least we could do is put up with a litte racket that's being made to save the lives of our people.  The reason you're hearing more noise lately is the fact that our enemies are using more sophisticated weapons and we're trying to develop countermeasures to them.  Anyone willing to trade a few extra minutes of silence for the lives our troops is no patriot.  Just think of the tremendous sacrifices
borne by the citizens of Aiken and Barnwell counties when the government built the Savannah River Plant.  Whole towns were sacrificed for the national good with few complaints!  The "Home of Ten Governors" should
be proud to har the sounds of patriotic sacrifice and do away with the "save the soldiers in somebody else's neigborhood" attitude.

I would like to know how someone who lives in a million dollar home gets an EBT card? I live in a modest home and have lost my job only to find one that pays $ 30,000 less a year. Do I qualify?? Or is it because they know how to beat the system???
web posted July 4, 2007

This is in response to the discussion on EBT cards.  I previously worked in a grocery store and saw many things that infuriated me.  Like others have stated, I realize that there are people that need help but the thing that would bother me the most would be when people would come through my line with a buggy full of crab legs and Capri Sun, then tell all of the children with them to get a candy bar and a soft drink, pay for it with an EBT card, and then use cash to pay for beer and cigarettes.  Many of these people would have jewelry to the nines, a cell phone, and beautifully manicured nails.  They would then take their groceries to a $40,000 SUV.

The food stamp program needs serious reform.  Foods that have little or no nutritional value should not be allowed to be purchased.  I also feel that during the school year, when the children are getting 2 free meals a day at school, the benefits should be reduced.  I am not putting anyone down who gets assistance, I have gotten it myself in the past through the WIC program, but the blatant misuse of the system needs to stop.

Editor's note: The only thing I would like to see is those who receive government funding for their support to be drug tested in order to obtain the services. The bottom line, if you can afford drugs, you don't need public "assistance". That is the largest abuse of the system in my opinion. I do not believe that all those who rely on such programs in times of needs are drug addicts. Those who use the system and then regain their status as taxpayers are to be commended. Multi-generational reliance on government assistance is not acceptable.

Concerning the comment supposedly made by a County Line firefighter that if they both entered a burning building, that he (or she), would "leave him behind". If that statement is true, then that person is the one that should receive a letter of termination. A fire dept. doesn't need someone with type of attitude. As a retired full-time firefighter of over 30 years, I know that I would not want to go into a burning building with someone with that type of attitude. For the record, I do not know any members of the Co. Line F.D., and not making this response on behalf of anyone.

I will e-mail my story tomorrow. Assistance -welfare whatever you want to call it, was meant to be used as a short time solution for people in need. As with everything that concerns money it has become a way of life with some. It extends far beyond food assistance. What about the young teenage girl that gets pregant and we pay her medical bills and then support her while she goes on to have more. Something is wrong with that picture. It happens everyday. I know one person that has four little children and now another on the way. Neither of the parents work or even try to and they go through the grocery line every week and get their food free. How is it that these two clowns can be at the helm of our school board and get away with murdering our education system? Do any of the other board members have the guts to stand up to these two fools? If the other board members are
intimidated by these clowns, then we need to elect people who will get in their face and fight for a school system we can be proud of. Someone in your readership must know how to get rid of these two embarrassing board members. Remember what happened to the Allendale school system? They had their own version of Bibbs and Cooks, and their school system was taken over by the state and out of the hands of the county. This is the link for the house bill addressing accountability of Guardian ad Litems. On 04/10/07  there was a subcomittee meeting with some proposals including one to require Guardian ad Litems to report their cases to the Clerk of Court in order to help keep track of how many cases they are handling at one time and how much they are charging. I did not see this on the web site, maybe because it hasn't gone to comittee. The House  Referred it to Committee on Judiciary and they are in the process of trying to find solutions. Now is the time for suggestions. Once the proposed solution is written up it will go to comittee to be voted on in January.

There is no one to enforce the current legislation because Guardian ad Litems don't have to answer to anybody. They can charge thousands of dollars and do very little work and stand before a judge and say whatever they want even if it's not true without any repurcussions. It is probably seldom that this happens with malicious intent but often a thourough investigation is not done to find facts and in some cases Guardians who are young and don't have children or training in child psycology are deciding what's best for
them based on what the children tell them. The Guardian ad Litem is who the judge listens to and are the ones who hold the future of children in family courts in the palm of their hands. They should be qualified and accoutable to someone.

To the people who are angry about people using their EBT cards to buy groceries while you struggle on a budget, work for your income, etc.  I too get frustrated at times when I see people using their EBT cards and my buggy pales in comparison to theirs because my payday is days away.  I try to think of what their life is like in comparison to mine after they leave the grocery store.  It is very unlikely they are going home to a beautiful house filled with what you want, 2 nearly new cars, nice furniture, etc. It is highly unlikely they have paychecks coming into the home that are enough to pay for health insurance and provide for many of the things we buy that are considered "wants", and it is doubtful the people on EBT cards get to go on nice family vacations each year.  Yes, our government does extend the benefit of an EBT card to some people who could work and are undeserving of the card, but in the end I choose to be very thankful that my family doesn't have to have an EBT card to buy groceries.  Personally, I think it would be awful to lose my job, income, whatever, and have to feed my children with government assistance.  Thank God for what you have instead of being so judgemental. It is all in your outlook of other people: focus on being grateful for what you have been blessed with, instead of angry that someone has what you perceive as an undeserved benefit.

I for one am glad to see that the hospital is has decided to take a different approach to ER care.  There is no need for anyone to go to the ER and strain the resources for a sore throat, runny nose, or cold.  If you have a cold, wait 7 days and it will be over.  Don't cost the hospital money to treat you.  Large hospitals in the area have had this policy for a while now and seems to be working fine.

As for smoking, many large hospital campuses are becoming smoke free.  That means for faculty, staff, patients, and visitors.  Self Memorial in Greenwood is already smoke free and MCG will become that way in November.  I think all health care facilities should follow suit.
