Editor's post: My bride returned home safely after her trip to NYC. After arriving in Augusta late Thursday night it seems her luggage missed the flight. Due to the late hour the reports on the Headlines Page are fewer in number. If it was not ready for publication by 9 pm, it did not make it into today's edition.

I also hope Johnston Town Councilman Tommy Burton is happy now. Obviously he wanted to be the center of conversation in the Wandering Minds.

You a Racist PIG!!! Your wrote the letter on Mr. Burton to try to make him look bad. He is a good man that looks out for us. You always make it all about the black mens. Mr. Dorn and Mr. Burton.

Editor's note: I did not write the letter from Johnston Town Councilman Tommy Burton, he did. I simply published it. I wonder why you did not complain when I actually did report on former County Administrator Wayne Adams, current Administrator John Pettigrew, County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece, County Councilman Everett Kitchens, School Board member Scott Chitty, the entire Fox Creek Charter High School Board, and many others who happen to all be white. And you want to call me a racist?

Who is making race an issue, you or me? Did you miss the report on Planned Parenthood taking donations to abort black babies, my admiration of Sheriff Adell Dobey, and never an ill word about Rep. Bill Clyburn?

Race is not a factor to me. It is my general belief that anyone that throws race into a conversation generally has no defense to the issue at hand. I adhere to the words of Dr. King and judge people on the content of their minds and actions, not the color of their skin. Give it a try, you may sleep better at night.

There is a place in Aiken County or Ridge Spring where mud boggers can go to mudbog. Maybe if they would go there people would stop complaining about what they do to the roads.
web posted February 29, 2008

I read the letter Mr. Burton wrote to the Citizen News and the one you published. I've read the many articles about Norman Dorn, Monroe Kneece, Willie Bright, the County Council as a whole, the School Board, and other  leaders across the county. If anyone wants to know why Edgefield County lags behind the state in terms of growth and the inability to attract industry the reason is clear. Take a look at who we put out there to represent us to the world. Would you want to do business with them? I know I wouldn't. Until we get people that are professional and educated leading us nothing is going to change.
web posted February 29, 2008

This is for Tommy Burton. You are stupid. WAIT! He might not be able to read that. ToMmy BurtOn yOu aRe StooPid.

I remember about ten years ago you and (Mayor) Ken Durham were enimies when all the zoning stuff was going on and now you seem all buddy buddy with him. I'm stareting to wonder if you've gone over to the dark side?

Editor's note: I still have the same beliefs that I held then just as Mayor Durham (who was a member of the Planning Commission at the time) holds to his beliefs. We disagreed then on the issue just as we disagree now. However, our disagreement was not personal, it was political. Those who made it personal, such as former Merriwether County Councilman Danny Bishop, former County Administrator Wayne Adams, and former Building and Planning Director Jack Jenkins (who was convicted of assault and battery against me at a Public Hearing), are a different story. Of course, they all have the moniker "former" before their names.

I know a lot of teachers read Edgefield Daily, maybe you could get one to grade (Johnston Town Counciman Tommy Burton's) "letter". I bet he wouldn't score his age. His IQ.... maybe.
web posted February 29, 2008

To the person calling (Johnston Police) Chief Aston and his men cowards - you are the coward. Chief Aston and all of his men are brave and help keep our town safe. That is a lot more than you do!
web posted February 29, 2008

I've always thought Tommy Burton was an idiot. I'm glad he took away any doubts I had.
web posted February 29, 2008

I read the letter from Tommy Burton. Here is my question. What is complaining about? The whole thing he is fussing about wasn't about him to start with and you did everything he asked. Then I read your response and it hit me. His big gripe is you won't tell him who we are. I guess to him you are a mean man and we love you for it! You should tell him to go to hell.

Editor's note: He is entitled to his opinion. I would never wish hell upon anyone.
web posted February 29, 2008

I read the letter from Tommy Burton. How did" this "get elected to the post of town council? Anyone that cannot compose a letter without the misspelled words and syntax errors that his had should surely not hold public office. I really liked his racially charged ending about where to spend his money.
web posted February 29, 2008

I just read the "Letter to the Editor" from Tommy Burton, and my stomach still hurts from laughing so hard. Did this man graduate or even attend school? There are so many punctuation failures, mis-spelled words, slang, and improper capitilazion in his garbled up letter. There is one good thing that the letter has a benifit about it. I let my 12 year old read it and stressed to her, to pay attention in school. She actually thought that someones child wrote it to defend their FaThEr.,

I rode through Edgefield the other day and couldn't help but notice the green grass and flowers on the square. The recently planted trees looked good too. I think maybe we should rip it all up and while we are at it let's add a water feature! Don't you know the statue is not the puppet Durham, but the puppeteer Rainsford. Oh, let's not get the shrubs too big either. I'm actually thinking maybe some spotlights from the roof of the courthouse.Hussle up, we certainly want the grass to have time to take root
before the hot summer gets here. (Rock Creek Landscaping owner), I don't envy the microscope that you are going to be under. A litte hint, don't touch a thing. You can't fix what isn't broken. I am disgusted.

Regarding who was killed at Sue Logue's home, according to THE GUNS OF MEETING STREET by T. Felder Dorn, on Nov. 16, 1941, Sheriff Allen was shot in the face and died at the scene. Fred Dorn was taken to a Greenwood hospital and died later that evening, and Deputy "Doc" CLark was taken to an Augusta hospital and died Nov. 18, 1941.  By the way, this is a very interesting book.  Again, thanks for keeping us informed!!.

Editor's note: Thank you for reading.
web posted February 29, 2008

3 known people killed @ The Logue home: Sheriff Allen; Deputy W.L. "Doc"Clark (who died a couple of days later in the hospital) and a Logue sharecropper, Fred Dorn. George Logue was wounded in the gun battle but survived those injuries.

Due to bad weather and water remaining on the field from heavy rain the ballgame was cancelled Wednesday night.  The Rebels are now scheduled to play Ridge Spring (Tonight) Friday, Feb. 29 and the final game of the tournament will be played Saturday, March 1.  Hopefully we'll get the big "W" for both games.  Good luck Rebels for a winning season.

I read over "Mr" Burton's letter to the editor concerning (EdgefieldDaily.com).  I've read better penned articles from my child in elementary school.  One line that was wriiten was particularly interesting. "( Let it be)( Let it be) remember we all have to reap what we sow."  I wonder just how prepared "Mr" Burton is for this.  To quote another old saying, "What goes around comes around".  Think about your actions Tommy, and be careful what you wish upon others.

P.S.  I think this is a great outlet for people of the county.  Keep up the great work.

web posted February 29, 2008

I know you were just kidding about the statue of Ken Durham but I think it would be a great idea!  We could put a coat and tie on the statue.  Maybe that would satisfy the individual who keeps complaining about that.
web posted February 29, 2008

I know that almost everyone will be writing in about Mr. Burton, but I thought that I would have to put my 2 cents in as well. First of all if that is how the original letter was written, then he needs to go back to school. because he doesn't seem to know proper English or how to write anything at all. Capital letter in the middle of a sentence, only if it is a proper noun or persons name or name of a place. He also needs to find the quotation mark key on the computer or either learn how to write them down on paper, because what I saw were parenthesis used  as quotes...LOL... Maybe if he can not take the heat then he needs to resign his seat on the council. That is all for now...And I am willing to sign my name to this, but maybe I will just own up to it a town council meeting so you can show just how smart you are when you defend yourself on it...Have a wonderful day everyone...

Below are a few of several comments sent in regarding my note joking about a statue of Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham being placed on the Edgefield Town Square:

You are a flippin nut!!!! I was about ready to throw a fit when I read there was going to be a statue of (Mayor) Ken (Durham) on the square. DONT DO THAT AGAIN!!!!!! IT AINT FUNNY!!

When I read the (Editor's) comment about a statue of Ken Durham I thought OMG! Then I saw where you were "just kidding". Thanks for the laugh.

I wish you wouldn't play practical jokes on (your) readers. My husband woke me up at 5:30 this (Wednesday) morning to make me read that the mayor was going to have a statue of him on the town square. Please put the Just Kidding line at the top so he won't wake me up next time you want to have fun at my expense.

I just about (had a bowel movement) in my pants when i saw you said Ken Durham was gonna get a statuet on the town square. I felt like a fool when i told my friends about it. Thanks a pant load!!

Editor's note: The comment, noted as a joke, was intended to get a rise out of Mayor Durham and those close to him. I never intended for anyone to take the comment serious, thus the "Just kidding" disclaimer. This is the Wandering Minds where nothing is to be considered factual. I spoke with the Mayor on Wednesday and he found it as humorous as I, and those close to him, did. Though we may disagree on some issues, Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham is one of the most accessible in the area and has a great sense of humor.

If you think I scared you with that comment, just wait until April Fools Day.

Editor's note: I do not have the information at my disposal tonight. I have asked the Edgefield County Archivist Tricia Price Glenn to provide the details as recorded in our county records. I will post the information as soon as it is available.

To the Wardlaw parent that posted on Monday:  Sounds more like a cheap shot at the Guidance Counselor than an opportunity to give kudos to hard working kids.  Have you tried taking your complaint to the Headmaster before you aired this dirty laundry here?  Perhaps the former Headmaster may have tolerated poor performance from staff but I doubt this one will.  Maybe public school would suit your family better.  It's just wrong of you to give this or any other media outlet the chance to lump Wardlaw Academy into the same catagory with Fox Creek.

The Varsity STHS Baseball team has played two games in the Pelion tournament so far defeating Saluda and Blackville-Hilda.  The Ridge Spring/STHS  game was cancelled due to bad weather.  It will not be made up from my understanding.  The Rebels play Pelion tonight (02/27/08) with the final game(s) being played this weekend to finish the tournament.  Good luck to the Rebels.  They really practice hard and seem to play well together as a team.

I attended the first part of the school board meeting last night since my son was being recognized as a junior scholar.  Scott Chitty handed out copies of the SC laws regarding charter schools to the board members - this was obviously the result of discussions during the previous meeting.  What I thought was interesting that he told the board members that the words in italics had been added and the remaining plain text was the actual law.  Huh, Scott Chitty, champion of FCHS, providing an interpretation of the charter law to the school board?!?  I would have thought that the school board counsel would be charged with doing this.  I think he was present as Shawn Clinksdale(?) pointed to a man when she was stating that she had the school board counsel review her recommendations on contracts.

FYI, the majority of the junior scholars present last night were white .... but they were also overwhelmingly male.  I don't think that this really means anything important although one of your readers apparently thinks otherwise.  Very few of the MMS scholars were there - probably due to the tree falling on Sweetwater.

Editor's note: Scott Chitty does not represent Merriwether on the Edgefield County School Board. He represents Fox Creek. He is a former Fox Creek Board member. He will be challenged in the upcoming election. His sole function on the ECBOE is to insure the ECBOE does not enfoce the charter school's requirement to abide by its Charter.

i've got a question.  you can put this in the wandering minds if you want.  when i try to print a recipe off the country cooking i get 1 page with the recipe and 3 pages of your side links.  is there anyway to print just the recipe?  i have seen on some sites where you can click on a link for a "printable version" and get just the recipe.  do you have that?  am i just missing it?

Editor's note: No, there is a reason behind the madness. I suggest that readers open a text document and then cut, copy, and paste the information in the text document for printing for personal use. All information on EdgefieldDaily.com is encoded with small embedded identifiers that are traceable if others use the information without permission for reprinting. I have been collecting information on a publication that has regularly lifted information without permission.

I really think you are missing the point to all of my posts…my posts are to enlighten the community.  It is all about the community.  You are taking personal shots, when they are not warranted.  I am truly concerned about the wellbeing, safety, and finances of this community…with that said,

I don't think you need to bring up the "size" issue.  That has nothing to do with what is right or wrong.  I think you should look at your current roster to see if EVERYONE is in shape.  I don't think you have to be "fat" to mismanage money, steal money, or just be plain ignorant and stupid...lol...ha...ha...ha

You know...I only write these posts because I care about the community.  One day, the "right" person will read my posts and dig deeper.  It is amazing who reads edgefielddaily.com.

It is not always about getting "your way".  It is sometimes about what is right or wrong...not for you personally, but for the community.  The reason the County Line is in the "shape" it is in now (stolen money, mismanagement) is because the community has "stayed on the porch".  Now, these out of shape, rotten apples, haters, spoiled brats that didn't "get their way" are bringing some wrongs to the light.

Have fun, keep reading edgefielddaily, and keep up the "good" work.

To the people writing in about the Sue Logue, the sheriff, and everything that went on at the end of Meeting Street back in the 1940's.  The sheriff was Sheriff Ward Day Allen, not Wad Allen Reece.  Mr. W. A. Reece was a member of this community and passed away not too long ago.  (He was probably named for the sheriff, I'm not 100% sure.)  You can look up a small biography on Sheriff Allen at www.SCFOP.org.  It is a website for the SC Fraternal Order of Police and lists several Edgefield County officers that have died in the line of duty.  And as for Sheriff Allen looking the other way, being "crooked", and writing a letter of support for Joe Frank Logue, Jr.  That would have been a remarkable feat in itself except for the fact that he was shot and killed himself at the Logue house along with Deputy William Lloyd Clark.

Editor's post: Pick up a copy of the Citizen News today and read a heavily edited letter to the Editor from Johnston Town Councilman Tommy Burton regarding the Wandering Minds (not the Wandering Mines as he said). I suggested that they run the letter in its original form, but I do not think they took my advice. I will see if I can get an original copy and publish it on EdgefieldDaily.com. I want Mr. Burton to express himself in his own words. After all, he is complaining about what readers of EdgefieldDaily.com have read, not what the readers of the local papers have read. I do appreciate the free advertising. I know where everyone that reads the letter in the paper will be heading on the internet, here. To those new readers, Welcome to EdgefieldDaily.com and the only interactive media in Edgefield County. Send in your comments for the Wandering Minds by emailing the Editor at editor@edgefielddaily.com or just click here. Your identity will never be revealed, something Mr. Burton is complaining about in his letter. Mr. Burton's letter also opens the door for me to respond. This will be fun.

I happen to know you get the same stories about Fox Creek that the papers do so don't claim that your bias against the school is not yours alone and then blame it on Fox Creek. I have been told they are sent to you. Quit putting our school down and only reporting bad things.

Editor's note: Obviously you have been lied to by someone. Fox Creek Charter High School does not send anything to EdgefieldDaily.com, even when requested. They have even refused legal Freedom of Information requests in the past that I could have taken legal action against. It is a shame since EdgefieldDaily.com has the largest readership by any publication based in Edgefield County. Fox Creek Charter High School is not just cutting off its nose to spite its face, they are decapitating themselves in the process. I have a suspicion that the same people providing information to you are the same ones falsely claiming to have a $5 million dollar loan for a new school building year after year after year.

I read where you said you have tickets to the Masters. Do you have any extra tickets? My husband and I would love to go. We have only been in the area a few years and it has always been his dream to walk the golf course. I would be willing to pay for them. (name and information removed from a Wandering Minds comment)

Editor's note: Actually, yes I do. I am thinking about having a contest to give away two tickets for the Par 3 on April 9. It is a last minute idea and I have not thought it through. If I come up with something it will be announced on Monday, March 3. I am open to ideas and suggestions. I will not sell the tickets under any circumstance. If the contest does not happen I will give them away to friends.

I saw you (the Editor) on the (Edgefield Town) sqaure today with Mayor Ken (Durham) and David (Coleman). So you got the scoop and what they going to do?

Editor's note: I was there to photograph the Mayor as he posed for his statue that will be placed where the fountain is presently located. It seems the cost of the statue will use up all the funds allocated to relandscape the square so that plan has now been scrapped.

Just Kidding! - The two were discussing the project and I happened along and joined the discussion as did others. Mayor Durham and Mr. Coleman did respond to a comment posted on the Wandering Minds about using the project for those seeking Eagle Scout and making use of the FFA at STH. For the last three years the Town of Edgefield has sponsored an Eagle Scout project (and is doing one at the time). All the flowers that are planted on the square, at Town Hall, and the street scape are purchased from the FFA and the students do all the planting.

Editor's note: Personally I feel Chief Aston and his officers are doing a great job. Like most law enforcement agencies Chief Aston is constrained, much like the Sheriff, in being able to have the number of officers he really needs.

RE: to the (persons) that are bashing county line fd.......
Ding, Ding, Ding we have another winner of the stupid card award. Here's your prize, one free trip to CountyLine fire department. My advice is put your hearing aid in and turn the volume up. First please learn to type. Second I pass a physical every year. CountyLine has some firefighter's that can't fit into their bunker gear, so you might be stepping on your own toes, be careful. You said do you really think we can train with the big boys? I take it that you are referring to "the CountyLine Boys"? If so that would be real easy, a third grader could train you on some things. Sitting around the station telling war stories doesn't count for training, unless you a member of CountyLine. So you need to come with something way better then that bull. Last is moaning because something didn't go our way. Less look at this a minute, we are tax paying citizens FIRST. So if I don't like what is being done with MY money then I have a RIGHT to raise as much hell as I want too. YOU have three ways you can handle this little problem, number one, don't read the comments posted about CountyLine. Number two, read them and hate us cause we're right. Number three, YOU and your COUNTYLINE BOYS run down to LOWES, buy some lumber, nails and a hammer, build a bridge and get over it. I'm NOT going away any time soon.

I noticed you posted the students who earned junior scholar honors from the middle schools.  First, I would like to congratulate these students who earned this honor.  However, I did notice something about the list that was odd.  At MMS I believe that all of the students who earned this honor were white, which you might expect since that majority white school.  Looking at the list from JET I also noticed that the list of students who earned this honor was overwhelmingly white yet the population of JET is majority black.  Is this the first sign that new Superintendent lacks the "intestinal fortitude" to lead the black students?

Editor's note: How can you tell the race of the students by the listing of their names? Just curious.

Re: Sheriff Wad A. Reece going to arrest Sue Logue, unarmed. You mention he was a relative of the Logues. From what I've found out, he probably knew Sue pretty well, himself, and had reason not to fear her. It didn't seem to matter to her if her  conquests were relatives or not. And yes, he and a "lot" of others did look the other way on Joe Frank Logue, except for writing letters of support for him! Now tell me they weren't crooked. He deserved no different treatment than the others. You must also see that Sue was not a born Logue, but married into the family so Sheriff Reece being related to the Logues does not mean he considered her a true Logue. She was actually a Stidham, from Saluda. Also, he did not go alone to arrest her! From my understanding, "Ol Strom actually went and got her out of the home. Wonder why he didn't fear her? The pictures of him walking her out of the home are documented.

I just wanted to put my input in on the upcoming Johnston Jaycee's Peach Blossom Pageant.  I understand that it's come back for a good cause, but i have a few dislikes about it.  The last couple years the "Miss Peach Blossom" wasn't even from the Johnston/Edgefield community.  Girls from outside the county are coming into the pageant and don't really get as much from winning or even placing as girls from here do.  I grew up in Johnston, and if I would've ever won such a pageant as this, it would mean alot to me.  I've gone to the festival every year since i can remember.  Winning Miss Johnston Peach Blossom could be a touching experience for young girls of our county (if all the other girls from Saluda, North Augusta, Aiken, etc. weren't taking it over).  Not to sound like IGA, but they just don't have our hometown pride!

Editor's note: Do not fault the judges or the pageant because others enter. Edgefield County has some of the most beautiful young ladies in the state. Sadly, most do not enter such events. Perhaps local businesses should become involved and sponsor some of our local beauties. I would be willing to sponsor a contestant on behalf of EdgefieldDaily.com. Speak to some of your local business owners and suggest they do the same.

Can someone please explain why the Assistant Chief of County Line Fire Department, which lives right across the street from the fire department, goes to medical calls in his private vehicle leaving a perfectly good first responder vehicle at the station?  If something were to happen to his personal vehicle to or from the call, the county would have to pay for his vehicle.  Also, the assistant chief is not following policy and procedure (unless they have made adjustments to make people happy).  Aren’t at least two people are supposed to go to medical calls?  Seems like Count Line is shining again!!

Since the Guidance Counselor at Wardlaw "forgot" to submit the students that were eligible for the SC Junior Scholars program it might be nice if the Edgefield Daily would recognize them, since there is no apparent concern that this is just a repetitive oversight on the behalf of the Guidance Counselor. These students have worked hard to achieve this,  it would not be fair to them to be ignored again.

Editor's note: EdgefieldDaily.com will always publish accolades due to our local students if it is provided. The Edgefield County School District and Sandra Friar does a wonderful job providing the information. Wardlaw and Fox Creek have both been asked to participate. I will not beg them to spotlight their students.

RE: "In response to the post posted yesterday about the County Line Vol. FD. I have attended two of the departments board meetings recently, and it seems to me that they are using what little funds that they do have very wisely."

Ding, Ding, Ding we have a winner!!! You are so not correct it's not even funny. You went to a couple board meetings? CountyLine is using "what little funds they have wisely? CountyLine gets ~ $60,000 to $63,000 a year from taxes; they have ~$37,000 going out for 2 trucks a year. So they have ~$24,000 left to run the department for the year. So I wouldn't throw the word "little" funds out there too much. Call up North Side Fire Department and West Side Fire Departments if you want "little funds. Everyone knows that CountyLine Fire Department is VOLUNTEER. The fact is CountyLine does NOT have a big call volume, the calls that are getting pointed out are mostly medical. As for the contacting the fire department deal, the wonderful powers to be at CountyLine didn't post nothing until the "Good Apples" went to the board and then and only then did the Board meetings/ times/ phone #'s get posted. So once again you DON'T know what you're talking about. As for the "mentality" thing, you believing what you're told by the Chief and that laughing stalk of a board really shows who really has the mentality problem.

PS: Do the research on spending money wisely, figure up all the money CountyLine spent on Bling, Bling to look better than other departments and come back to the table.

remember my late Mother saying the same thing..thus being "qualified" to teach school. I think Mother said Sue taught a class in Anatomy. I will disagree on the part about "this county and it's leaders have always been crooked". Sheriff Wad A. Reece was kin to the Logues and if he were crooked, why did he investigate the shootings, knowing that he was kin to the Logues and then go to arrest her unarmed? I don't think that would deem him as being "crooked". He could have easily "looked the other way".

These are the same people who said Bill Clinton's known and proven affairs, and one alleged rape, were not relevant to his ability to act as President. Actions always speak far louder than words. Maybe one day we will return to a two party system where the liberals will attack conservatives rather than each other.

What an adorable couple these two make. Excuse me while I go throw up.

Think it will happen? A Bill that would require Web reporting of local government budgets
A group of senators has introduced a bill to require local governments to report their spending online. The bill would require credit card statements, check registries and all expenses of more than $100 be posted with an explanation of the expense. The bill would allow the state Budget and Control Board to post the spending of towns and school districts with no Web site. State Sen. Larry Grooms, R-Berkeley, said other states already require the information be posted online.

Editor's note: I agree and feel that all government spending should be made available over the internet.

The “individual or two” are concerned citizens of this county and this district.  It has nothing to do with the mentality of the citizens.  I am so sorry that this individual or two care about the wellbeing, safety, and money in this district.

WOW…it took a rocket scientist to finally post the board meeting dates and times…imagine that…the law requires it and CountyLine is finally obeying one law.  Hey…what about board elections?  When are they held, who is running, and how do I get on the ballot?

I'm glad you finally made it to a Fire Board meeting for CountyLine. Have you been to training lately since you are a fireman there?  For you to attend a Board Meeting, then you must have gone with your husband, which it is about time you all do something together.

I guess CountyLine was using the over $350 wisely too when it was stolen/missing.  In my opinion using the money wisely would be spending it on new gear, physicals, fit tests, community relations, and other training for the firefighters.  I also guess that CountyLine has always used the 1% money correctly and wisely…NOT!  If CountyLine were spending money so wisely, then the Board and Chief would have no problem with opening the books for the community.  Other fire departments in the area open their books for their district, but once again, CountyLine is not following the law - Freedom of Information Act.  And also imagine that CountyLine wants to “charge” the citizens for looking at the books.

That call that unfortunately did not get answered could have been life or death.  One call that sticks out in my mind is that CountyLine was called out for a car fire, and CountyLine called an Aiken County FD for mutual aid.  The Aiken County FD had the fire out when one fireman from CountyLine arrived.  Why would you not call a fire department in your county for mutual aid?

Go ahead and defend the “snake pit”.   One day that “head” snake will bite you too.  Just remember, we are trusting our lives, our children’s lives, and our family’s lives to the “snake pit”.

If a fraction of what I read about Norman Dorn is true, then he should be in jail...not public office. Any teacher who would hit their male students in the private parts with a yard stick, as Dorn allegedly has committed, should be labeled something other than human. What group of people would vote this Clown into office amazes me. Brother Dorn's constituents probably can't read or speak the English language, much as their great leader. As for Brother Bill Clyburn, remember he is responsible for realigning the district responsible for voting Bubba Bibbs into orfice. Myself and many other responsible people voted Rep. Massey into office just to put someone who is sincere about this county. Good riddance Brother Bill! And maybe one day, responsible voters will be able to say Bye..Bye to this Dorn clown.

Editor's note: I have no idea how Mr. Dorn treated his students as I never had him as a teacher (using the term liberally). I had educated teachers throughout most of my educational process in Edgefield County Schools. How Norman Dorn was ever allowed to teach a class is beyond me. One would think a person gains knowldge and wisdom over the years. Mr. Dorn, in my opinion, is a blithering idiot. God only knows how stupid he was earlier in his life.

I don't want to "ya ya" back and forth with the person who commented about my post concerning Sue Stidham Logues" teaching qualifications. No. 1, I am not an idiot, and you are very rude to call someone you don't know names! I am smart enough to realize that most of the descendents of those involved in the Meeting Street murders are in denial about their ancestors crimes, in the past. They may not like it but that still doesn't change what happened, no matter how much they wish they could. We all probably have some skeletons in our closets if we dig back far enough. No. 2, My information came from T. Felder Dorns' book, "The Guns Of Meeting Street" and off the internet. Try checking there. According to the info I found, it was common knowledge among the men of Edgefield that Sue had a lot of dexterity in the muscles in a certain part of her body! You are correct in saying she was highly motivated, but not as a teacher. She was, when it came to getting what she wanted, no matter who she had to sleep with or what she had to do! According to the driver who drove her and "Ol Strom to Columbia, for her execution, they had a romp in the back seat on the way there. Great teaching qualifications, huh? No. 3, The Logues only followed along with the way Edgefield County did back then and still does. Joe Frank Logue, who was a police officer in Spartanburg at the time, was the one who found the person to do the killing for and with Sue! All others involved were executed, except Joe Frank. For some reason, he was allowed to serve out his sentence at SLED Headquarters in Columbia, training dogs for them. Sheriffs' all over the state sent letters to the courts asking for leniency for him in sentencing! I don't know what that tells you but anyone who knows the justice system knows they usually give one person a break to give up the others. They do this when they need the testimony, when the evidence isn't enough. In this case they had plenty evidence to convict all of them. As I said in my past post, this county and it's leaders have always been crooked, dependent upon who you are and who you know. And No. 4, I stand corrected by you in the phrase I made on Sue Stidham Logue being the first woman executed in South Carolina. I did, unintentionally, leave out that it was by electric chair. No. 5, How were people like Strom Thurmond educated if the teachers in Edgefield County back then were not qualified, but highly motivated?

Mrs. Sue Logue was involved in education when most women had no college education.  Recruiting teachers in the first half of the 20th century to poor, rural Edgefield County was almost impossible.  The first few years of a formal education was often done by highly motivated teachers who were lucky to have a high school diploma.

As for answering a call, it is a VOLUNTEER department . They answer every call that they are able to and 98% of those calls get answered. Leave it to an individual or two to bring up a call that unfortunately didn't get answered, the sheriffs office would call another dept. if EMS asked them to. In regards to making contact with the fire department , stop by the station and if no one is there all the contact numbers are on the front door including the home and cell numbers of all the departments officers. Also you will find a board meeting schedule for the year.  I enjoy reading the wandering minds section regarding a few topics, it shows the mentality of an individual or two.

If he is referring to the town of Edgefield, then I have a question. People in Edgefield, Johnston, Trenton and the county are users of SCE&G, so are these areas getting any of this tax money to deal with their yearly budgets, other than the town of Edgefield? And as far as the storefront rental property situation difference in Johnston and Edgefield, the fact that people want to rent in Johnston, when they wouldn't have to pay town taxes in Edgefield, says a lot about the town leaders. In reference to the person calling you a liar.

I would have to say that it sounds like he or she might be a liar. The reason I say that is cause the only way they could have made contact with the County Line Fire Department to see if you were a member is to have followed the service truck to the local BBQ place or anywhere there is a free meal. Or maybe they found the Chief at one of the County meetings, oh wait I need to wake up because he doesn't go. For that matter I heard him the other day answering calls outside of his district. He had the radio tied up from the true first responders, they could not get on the radio due to him. But, he cant make calls in his on district like just yesterday they were called out and no one answered. I think he might be going for the County Wide Chief position. If they want to call someone a liar then they need to go to a County Line Fire Department Board meeting and they will see some good ones there.

Another thought, this person might be a family member to the Dorn household.  Speaking on the Dorn part maybe he needs to move to County Line area and join the Fire Board he will fit right in because they have no clue and love spending other peoples money and have no idea what they done with it. I think you are doing  a great job at responding and reporting the truth. I want to say Thank You for a job well done.

I have no clue what your trying to get at, but if CountyLine Fire Department did have a "Ladder Truck" the only thing would happen is they would take it to Brush Fires and leave it in the bay on structure fires, if they respond at all.

PS. It would have more chrome, diamond plate and a bug guard on it then Merriwether's Ladder Truck. Cause we all know the Chief of CountyLine has to look good.

After reading the posts about county councilman Norman Dorns' teaching skills, by former students, I have come to the conclusion that Edgefield county has never put the education of it's children before what certain citizens want! I won't name names, but when I ran businesses in Johnston and Edgefield, I worked a lot of young, middle and high school students. These kids joked about certain teachers, in some schools, always smelling like alcohol. I personally saw one teacher beat and push her son aound my store and wouldn't let him get his change from me, because he took longer than she felt it should to get what he wanted. She later lost custody of this child over her way of treating him. According to the young people I talked with, these same things have been going on for years while people look the other way! It goes way back! Sue Stidem Logue, who has the distinction of being the first female ever executed in South Carolina, (for murder), taught in Edgefield County schools with no college or formal education, due to the fact she was related to Strom Thurmond, distantly, and had had sex with quite a few men in the county. Our children are seeing and hearing of these things. They are learning that it's not how good you are as a teacher, but who you are, who you know, and who owes you, that gets you anywhere in the Edgefield County School system. I know we have a lot of good, dedicated teachers in Edgefield County, but that doesn't justify some of the things the bad ones do! It's time people open their eyes to moral issues like these.

You said the filing for county council opens next month. Who is up for reelection?

Editor's note: All five County Council seats are slated for election every two years. Filing for office begins between March 16 and March 30 (some say between March 17 and March 31). So far sources say Norman Dorn, Everett Kitchens, Joel Hudson, and Willie Bright will face opposition. Two candidates are said to be in the "courtship" period against Chairman Monroe Kneece.

Confirmed is Rondey Ashcraft, who took 36% of the vote after a five day write-in run in 2006, is running against Everett Kitchens. Two candidates are rumored to be running against Joel Hudson in Merriwether and some "movers and shakers" in Edgefield are courting a candidatre against Norman Dorn.

Some have suggested former School Board member Kenneth Collier as a candidate to unseat County Councilman Willie Bright. I have not been able to confirm if Mr. Collier will be seeking a School Board spot or a County Council seat or if he has any intentions of running for any seat at this time.

With all the other monuments for the wars maybe the town should put another one up where the fountain is for Korea, Nam, and the Gulf Wars? I think that would fit to what is there. I donʼt believe the contract for the town square should be awarded to the Mayorʼs Brother-In-Law.  Sounds too much like a conflict of interest. I believe the County Square - it is the center of our county - should be improved, but I believe the area would be much more inviting if the Empty Stores between the Advertiser and  Hardware store could be remodeled. If the owner doesnʼt want to do  that  The Town should take them from the owner, because they make the show piece of our county not just the town look run down.

Imagine a Square like Abbeville; it would be impressive not to mention inviting to people from the area to come visit our town at night on the weekends.  A store like the Rocky Store would have worked if it had others stores to help it, Yes Bettis if you build it they will come, and Edgefield they will bring money. With money we have jobs and that will help pay for the restorations to that side of the square.

Why should this project cost so much money? The fountain needs to be fixed, it is a waste to just sit there and not be used. And why is it that the city is not responsible for the up keep on the Town Square. In Aiken for instance the city plants seasonal flowers and trees they have a greenhouse now I believe. To the person that asked if someone was opposed to Christopher Columbus reports and 'the veterans that died on Veterans Day'.  You should research your holidays a little more.  Veterans Day was created to remember those that served and are alive.  Memorial Day is for those that served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for all of us---BLACK and WHITE.  My problem with black history month is like many other ethnic groups, we don't have a month for our cultures.  Where is the hispanic history month?  There were hispanics that have made important advances in history.  Where is the asian history month?  Are there no prominent people in our history with asian backgrounds?  Where is irish history month? or german history month? yes I know there were some german people in history we don't like, but there are some that made huge advances in technology.  We have commercials and public announcement adds run through the entire month of February informing people of the advances of colored people, but do we see any adds or public info on George Washington? or Abraham Lincoln? both of whom were prominent white people that led struggles for freedom.  We have President's day, but we only use it for sales.  I'm not racist, I just feel it's time to either stop seperating everyone or start fairly recognizing all races and ethnicities.

Any idea why Fox Creek does not publish their school board minutes on a regular basis?  The last one available is from October.  Are they trying to hide something?

Editor's note: The Charter School that fails to abide by its charter, refuses to honor Freedom of Information requests, refuses to provide requested official documents to the Edgefield County School District, makes repeated false claims of a $5 million dollar loan and refuses to produce loan documents, tries to bill the county for out of disctrict students it allows to attend free? What would they have to hide?

I have voted republican in every election since i became eligible to vote. However, I am now appaled to think I actually voted for Mr" Lets cut all the programs fro the poor and elderly Sanford". 1 st he wants to force mediciad recepients to use generic prescriptions, there is not always a generic equivalent to medications,  MS drugs for example  are not available in a generic form. this is a dangerous proposal and in the end would cost sc more than it would save because of increased hospitalizations and docotor visits.  now he wants to cut funding for a program the feeds the elderly and house bound. Apparently there is no money in the budget for this program.yet there seems to be money for a raise for the legislature and the govenor.  years ago the state felt in neccessary to limit the number of physician visits a mediciad pt can receive to 12.  so from july to july  a medicaid recepient can only have 12 visits to a physician . fine if you are never ill, but what about someone with a chronic or life threatening illness. like cancer. no, you cannot apply for more visits. so after the 12th visit, the poor person who does not have insurance nor afford it at must pay out of pocket.again,a attack on the poor of the state. he has dropped  qualifying income amount on medicaid and  food stamps to the LOWEST in the nation so anyone receiving unemployment makes to much for assistance. at 700.00 a month  you do not qualify for help. I am ashamed to say i voted for this govenor, thankfully he will be gone in a few years. I have voiced my opinion to Senator Massey  and to the govenors officeabout the current budget and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

Editor's post: Mayor Ken Durham has answered a question posed by a reader in the Wandering Minds regarding the "5% franchise fee that SCEG charges us on our utility bill". Mayor Durham stated that the "fee" is indeed a tax and should be listed as a tax. The funds are used to support the town's yearly budget needs and with the Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) the town does not have to impose property taxes for the town's residents or business owners. The Federal Prison is responsible for a large portion of those tax receipts being paid to the town he said.

Meanwhile the Town of Johnston is facing a $142,000 shortfall in its proposed budget after being informed last year during its audit that the town was in the worst shape it has ever been in. The contrast is striking because open store fronts in Johnston are widely sought after while the same opportunities in the Town of Edgefield stay unoccupied in spite of no property taxes.

We went to the Town Hall Meeting held by Sen. Massey Monday night at (Merriwether Middle School) and Sen. Massey seemed sincere and really cared about what we had to say. I admired him for doing what no one else has done, listen to the people that elected him. Most of the time someone gets elected and then comes back to tell the people what he is going to do. Sen. Massey is here asking the people that elected him what he should do. It was refreshing and it is a testament to his commitment to represent us. I hope (State Rep) Bill Clyburn is paying attention. I think you had a story that said (Rep) Bill Clyburn was going to attend?

Editor's note: Rep. Bill Clyburn was invited to attend the Town Hall Meetings Sen. Massey has scheduled across Aiken, Edgefield, Saluda, and McCormick Counties. I believe Rep. Smith was invited to attend the Merriwether meeting as it encompasses part of his district. During the Inter-governmental meeting Rep. Clyburn said he was going to take part in the Town Hall meetings. I do not have information as to whether or not he attended any of the previous meetings held by Sen. Massey outside of Edgefield County.

Regarding the editors post about some of the town and County Councilman

I can safely say that it would also be intresting to see the Editors arrest records, along with SLED, and the FBI, what the heck, let's include the CIA.  Does this mean the the Editor has ever been arrested?  Well the CIA deals with mostly Spys,  So does this mean that the Editor is Really a Commie Spy?  I will give you a moment to get back in your chair, I suspect you may have fallen out of it as you were laughing so hard.

I wonder why Others think they were the ones being refered to?  Perhaps we should look into SLED and other records about the person?

Editor's note: I have never posted anything about the arrest records of any councilman. My comments were that I would never release the identity of a poster to the Wandering Minds to an elected official. As far as my FBI and CIA record, the claim that I was the shooter on the "grassy knoll" in the JFK assignation is bogus. I was an infant at the time. Although, as a southerner, I was still a pretty good shot at the time.

I agree with the other person that said we don't need to spend all this money on the town square just to replant it. Last time it was all the pretty trees that the town cut down to replant smaller trees. That was a waste of money. The trees were beautiful. Now we have a bunch of little sraggly trees. If we need to repair the irrigation (system) go ahead, but why spend $23,000 to plant the same things we have now? I guess if you have the right last name and connections somebody will always come up with a way to line your pockets with taxpayers money.

OUR TAX SYSTEM EXPLAINED FOR THE STUPID PEOPLE…(or Democrats)
10 men go into a bar for a beer.  After an hour, they settle up the tab of $100
It is decided that the bill should be split proportionally according to how much each man makes.
The first 6 men are either unemployed or work menial jobs….so it is decided they will pay nothing and drink for free.
The 7th man is a foreman…makes a decent living…he pays $13
The 8th man is a new supervisor…he pays $25
The 9th man is a middle manager…he pays $28
The 10th man is the business owner…he pays $35.

After several weeks of steady business by the ten men, the bar-keep decides to give the ten customers a refund of $20 for being such loyal customers.  In trying to decide how to split the “rebate”…it is decided to divide it proportionally based upon how the bar tab is paid.

The first 6 men receive nothing…but continue to drink for free.
The 7th man gets $2.50
The 8th man gets $5.00
The 9th man gets $5.50
The 10th man gets $7.00

Upon leaving the bar…the 7th man complains he only got $2.50 and it’s not fair that the eighth man got $5.00.  The 8th man complained he only got $5.00 but the 9th man got $5.50.  The first six men complained that they got nothing, and it goes to show how the rich exploit the poor.  They all agree to beat the 10th man up for exploiting them, take his money and split it up.

The next day, the 10th man, closes his business, and moves his assets to an off-shore account.
I hope the malcontents enjoy their unearned "tax-rebate."

I am writing this letter to get some press time on an issue that I believe is unfair and unconstitutional. I was charged around 3 months ago with simple assault without battery after a family member on my wifes side came onto our property and started an altercation. I did not touch this person but after calmly asking him to leave several times and my wife asking him to leave I did lose my temper and threaten to hit him. I feel that I was not wrong in doing so because I was on property that is owned by my wife and he came up there starting the problem. At the time the Deputies that were called didn't see any reason to charge me either but he went to the judge the next day and filed a warrant. After spending a night in jail and getting the money to get a public defender everyone I talk to wants me to just plead guilty. I refuse to so the Edgefield court keeps prolonging all the drama. I am not supposed to go out of state without permission and I feel that my right to a speedy trial is being overlooked. I don't think that I should have to plead guilty just to get a speedy trial. I have had several other problems with the family since this one and the law has been out here at least three times since and I have done nothing wrong and no other charges have been filed. This right here should throw up a red flag with the Sheriffs department. On the same token two years ago prior to this incident I was arrested because of false allegations on my mother-in-laws behalf and charges were dropped after spending almost $2000 on a lawyer. I was pursued by a lawyer to file false arrest charges and charges against her mother for giving a false statement but did not due to lack of money and not wanting the drama. When is our justice system going to stand up and realize just because you get charged with something don't make you a criminal. I am sick of being treated like one when I wasn't the one that provoke the argument. I feel that my treatment at the ECDC was not right either I was put in a cell with three other inmates. (ONLY THREE BEDS PER CELL) I asked for a matress to sleep on at 9:00pm but was not given one till almost 2:00am.  During that time period I had to sleep on a cold cement floor with not blanket either. And this is fair treatment for a minor charge. I THINK NOT!!!!!!

Mr. Burton said he was going to take the information to his lawyer in an effort to have me release the name of the reader. He is welcome to try, but it will not happen. I enjoy reading the edgefield daily. But, this is the first time I have really looked into wandering minds. My comment is about the concession trailor at Bettis. My understanding was that the trailor was for the county- but my question is, where is the support for Bettis. This is a question I've had for the past three years. Recreational sports in this county is not equally yoked. Edgefield is on top, Bettis is on the bottom, and Johnston and Merriweather are somewhere in the middle. These issues are quite evident to some of us supporters. What is the problem?

Editor's note: Welcome to the Wandering Minds. I have to question why you think Bettis Park is at the bottom when it is the most well funded park in the entire county. No other park has been given almost half a million dollars in just one year and much more over the years. That, in my mind, would rank Bettis Park at the top, not at the bottom. Merriwether, on the other hand, receives no funding from recreation and pays over 60% of all property taxes collected in the county. That would seem to place Merriwether at the bottom of the list. The Bettis Academy area pays some of the lowest percentages of property taxes and gets the largest slice of the pie. I will agree that Johnston is also under funded, but they are still ahead of Merriwether.

County recreation should stand on it's own revenues collected by the program, not those derived from a tax levy. It is a sad state of affairs when a couple hundred kids gets a tax levy but our Sheriff has to beg for money to protect our citizens from criminals.

This is a response to the letter written in the opinion section by Melissa Beasly. We pay taxes for road maintenance so we are already paying for that road to maintained. I feel that if these roads are that big of a problem then they need to put the rock down and solve it. Instead of everyone crying about how much it cost to maintain the roads. In what it would cost for rock it would cut costs alot in the next few years.  But instead they want to spend a good chunk of money redoing the town sqaure. This shows they got their priorities in line. I drove down Scupin Road on Sunday and I dont see what all the fuss is about. I think everyone complaining about all this needs to grow up. I also wonder if the sheriffs department is going to ticket whoever put the horse crap on the road because I dont believe its supposed to be there. It's definately a "foreign substance." I for one would rather drive through mud than crap.

Editor's note: Interesting concept and choice of words. "Maintaining" a road and "repairing" a road are two different things. You "maintain" your vehicle by having the oil changed and checking your brakes and tires, which is relatively cheap. When someone "having fun" slams into your vehicle the cost for "repairs" is greatly increased over the cost of "maintaining" the vehicle. Taxpayers already pay for "maintaining the roads", the cost of "repairing the roads" after the "fun loving" mud boggers leave is extra. Extra equals higher taxes. Excuse me if I, and others, do not want to pay for someone else's "fun".

I have a lot of concerns that I would like to address regarding some of the comments posted:

1.  I fully agree w/the poster wanting to know why our elementary children have to learn all about "famous black Americans" - There are so many "famous white Americans" - Why does race always have to play a part in the equation - Just get back to the basics of teaching (and I realize that it is in the teaching standards)

2.  Our schools have not been the same since we removed prayer from the schools - There needs to be an opportunity every morning for all kids that want to to pray -

3.  Why can't our teachers take the control back in the classroom like it used to be  -  It is time for the kids to be put back in their place and quit ruling and telling our teachers what they are and aren't going to do - I admire teachers to the highest because I would not stand for what I hear my child telling me everyday what is going on in these schools because a teacher can't do anything to the child but the child can talk to the teacher in any form - GET THE RIFF RAFF OUT OF THE CLASSES because they are getting all this from the HOME to begin with.

4.  And what is the extra money left over at the school district going to be used for?  I hope it want be used to increase some already overpaid administrators  paychecks!!  GIVE THE RAISES TO THE LITTLE PEOPLE ACTUALLY DOING ALL THE WORK!!

Editor's note: You left out former Governor Mike Huckabee. However, if anyone addresses issues on Sen. Obama they will be called a racist because he is black. Those who expose the shortcomings of Sen. Clinton will be called sexist. Those who comment on Sen. McCain will be said to be attacking the "elderly". Gov. Editor's note: The most important issue regarding the mud boggers and county roads is the fact that emergency vehicles that need to access the roads in order to respond to situations are unable to utilize the roads. It no longer becomes a matter of a few kids, or adults, "having fun", it becomes a matter of life and death. What would one of those mud bogging (or their parent or spouse) think if they crash and get pinned under their vehicle and died because rescuers could not reach them in time because of the damage done to the road?

Are the meetings for the new charter school advertised to the public?  There are lots of people who would love to attend!

Editor's note: I have never seen the meetings advertised in the paper of record (as required). But there are bigger problems the school is facing. It is curious that the Fox Creek Charter School is unable to provide documentation of student enrollment and the papers for the always quoted $5 million loan that does not exist to the ECBOE. I am waiting to see where they get a half a million dollars to pay off a short term loan that is due in a few months. Everyone at FCCHS just seems to "go with the flow", but in my experience, those that "go with the flow" generally get sucked down the drain with the rest "of the flow".

Regarding the poster (Feb 15) that said the Foxcreek web site gave all the information needed for the 2008 elections: I went there and was not surprised at what I found. "The Nominating Committee is to propose the slate of nominees to the BoD by the second Tuesday in April. (FCHS Bylaws Article VI, Section 1(c))" .According to my calendar that date is April 8.  It also states: "Applications for service on the Board of Directors will be accepted in the front office of the school starting April 14, 2008. Applications to run for a seat on the BoD for the 2008-2009 school year must be submitted to the school office by Friday, April 25, 2008 at 4:00 pm.  A sealed box will be provided in the office for the applications."

Based on the above information, the board will propose a slate of candidates (April 8) before one can apply to run for the board (April 14).  Oh well, I am sure Mrs. Bishop has already hand picked her new board.  All that is required now is to get the necessary votes for those people.

Editor's note: Those dates are for the FCCHS School Board, not the Edgefield County School District BOE. I have not received the dates for the ECBOE as of yet but the County Council filing date opens March 17 and runs through March 24.

And I agree with the editor. The only form of gun control, is learning how to use one yourself.  The media will continue to exploit these shootings. These people WERE defenseless. That's not to mention what we now consider everyday, ordinary crimes, like robberies, assaults, home invasions, etc. that could be prevented should everyone keep weapons and everyone have knowledge of that fact! Many tragedies and deaths could have been prevented or less harm done, had one other person, other than the shooter, had a weapon! Now, let me hop back down off of this soapbox.

Editor's note: [The above comment is one of six with similar content.] How many mass murders have taken place at gun shows, turkey shoots, shooting competitions, and other locations where just about everyone is armed? Answer? Zero. Where do they take place? Middle Schools (no guns allowed), High Schools (no guns allowed), Colleges (no guns allowed), Malls (no guns allowed). Call me crazy but even a blind man can see the connection. Where people are armed no such crimes take place. That is not an opinion, that is a fact. The locations are chosen because the murderer knows no one there will be able to stop the killing.

I am a student at Lander University, and I am asking that all of you pray for the students and faculty at Northern Illinois University. Once again, we are witnessing a travesty in our nation. It will be very hard for those who attend this university and others across our nation to walk back onto a campus to pursue their dreams. I can tell you first hand it is hard in the days that follow these tragic events. You never know where it will happen and that adds to the fear you experience! It could happen to anyone of us at any university in our nation. A dream is just that a dream, and we must all remember to chase them even in the darkest hours. We must all prove to be strong and continue to persevere despite the obstacles that are put in our pathway! To all my fellow college students in this nation, please continue the path to a better time and place. Please reach out to those that have experienced this tragedy in whatever way you can! Show your college pride and where the colors of the university that has just been deeply scarred and changed for an eternity. If I am correct, their colors are red and black! MAY GOD BLESS ALL THOSE INVOLVED!

Editor's note: It was a needless tragedy. Just think, if guns were not banned at so many locations maybe someone could have shot this nut before he killed his second victim. "Gun Free Zones" are a mass murderer's dream come true. My prayers are with the families of the helpless victims.

Rest assured, I do not cut Chairman Kneece any slack in political commentaries. I am sure he is not a fan of EdgefieldDaily.com, but we have a mutual respect for each other.

Thank you for the story on Jack Hannah and AGC (All God's Creatures). We really do need a shelter in Edgefield (County).

Editor's note: I will agree that there is a dire need for a shelter in the county. We spend far too much money paying Aiken County to house and put down the animals picked up in the county. It seems to me the county should partner with AGC in a shelter that could also be used by McCormick and Saluda Counties. Not only could we save almost $100,000 a year, but we could actually receive funds from our neighboring counties.

That would make sense and save money, so it is not considered.

I have not seen the names of the teens who were arrested on Feb. 8th, for trespassing, possessing alcohol and the involvement of the assault rifle, off of Moore Road.  I have checked the crime blotter and they are not shown.  Nor were the names of the other two who you said that warrants would be issued for.  Could you please check into this and provide the names of these individuals.  As a parent of teenagers, this would be helpful to know if these are kids that our children hang around with.

Editor's note: The three arrested were listed in this week's Crime Blotter. Kelly Michell Bush, 17; Custody order, trespassing after notice, David Allen Coppinger, 20; Custody order, trespassing after notice, and Justin Scabern Taylor, 22; Custody order, trespassing after notice. The "Custody order" is for pending charges.

The charge of minor in possession of alcohol was dropped because Taylor, who turned out to be 22, claimed the beer. Those with warrants have not been named since they have not been arrested.

I just had to respond to this post! First of all, I AM A YANKEE by birth who now lives in Edgefield county and I fail to see what connection that has to this issue. I have been "muddin'" many times in my life( YES we go off road in the North too) but have never damaged public property in the process! As teenagers, my friends and I would gather at someones house and go muddin' in a field or pasture AFTER recieving PERMISSION to do so. There is nothing wrong with having fun, as long as you respect other people and their property while doing so!  Secondly, I would have to say, from the grammatical content of your post , that I am very proud to be a Yankee.  At least I know how to spell and link words together to form sentences! I noticed something this evening as I was driving home from Lent services.  As I drove past Bland Baptist Church, a predominately black church (and I noticed the same on several other black churches throughout the county), on the marquee in front of the church, the sign states..."February is Black History Month."  I take no issue with a school or other organization advertising Black History month.  However, as we have just entered the month of Lent, I find it ironic that many black churches make no mention of one of the most holiest months in the Christian calendar...especially from a Christian church.  Wow, this speaks volumes about many of the the black churches priorities in this area. As I just happened to read this evening from 1 Corinthians, 31st verse, "Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord."

First, I would like to say that I enjoy reading the good, the bad, and the ugly posted on edgefielddaily.com.  It just lets me know what types of people are in the community in which I work.  I wish that everyone had the tact to post positive information about our students and schools, but that's just not the case all the time.  Providing a comprehensive education is the most integral part of a civilized society, whether it's at a charter school, regular public school, or private school.  I support all forums of education, as long as children are learning to live in a democratic society.  With that said, I would like to respond to your claim about the few black students at FCHS.  There are 8 black students enrolled at FCHS.  2 are seniors(one has attended FCHS since 9th grade, one transferred(not expelled) from STHS this year); 3 juniors(2 have attended FCHS since 9th grade, one transferred(not expelled) from STHS this year); and 3 freshman(none have ever attended STHS).  Your claim about the black students at FCHS is not true.  We really need to find ways of supporting everyone who is educating our youth.  The division, hostility, and pure hatred I see, experience, and hear about in this community is disturbing.  If we ever expect to better this community for future generations, we must find some common ground.  Everyone will never agree on everything, but we need to stop dragging our students and educators through the mud.  It isn't fair.  I want to thank all of the educators in Edgefield County for their efforts and determination, in spite of the negative press we get sometime.

Editor's note: It is nice for you to admit that the school is in violation of its charter when it comes to "minority" student populations.

Re: Teens Caught in Sexual Act at STHS

1) It was after school when the two got caught doing the dirty.
2) The teacher who caught them was leaving school to go home.
3) It is not a teacher's responsibility to patrol the halls after school hours. This job is the responsibility of the Administration, Hall monitor, or SRO.
4) There are 4 or 5 steps outside of S-Wing to get to ground level.
5) Administrators can not Expel a student. Administrators can RE (Recommend Expulsion) to the Hearing Officer. Every case of Recommended Expulsion goes before the Hearing Officer of Edgefield Co Schools. The Hearing Officer either upholds the recommendation or denies it. If the Hearing Officer upholds the recommendation, then the defendant has the right to have his/her case heard before the ECSB. The Edgefield Co School board can uphold the ruling by the Hearing Officer, or can overrule the Hearing Officer. The ECSB gets the final say if the full process is requested by the defendant.

Editor’s note: A lesson I learned long ago is never say it can never happen. Although, Fox Creek did allow a student with drugs back to school just days later. I guess if it was sex they could be back the next day. Who knows, maybe by the end of the day? At least STH expels those caught with drugs or having sex at school. Re:  the incident at STHS.  I just have to wonder how true this story is - in my mind's eye, I can't seem to place any stairs at the school - it's a single story building.  Unless they are outside steps.  In which case, I have to wonder why the perp, who would have been outside, would run into the building past the video camera (and past the teacher who was exiting the building).   In a situation like this, I find it hard to believe that the details given would have actually been noticed or quipped about to another faculty member.  At least they got the wing correct - "S" wing is where the science classes are located.

"... Any school district employee involved in this should be fired on the spot for not being loyal to their employer"

The administration, well most and the highest members of the administration would never do that.  You see they know who the teachers really work for and it is not them.  Nor is it the tax payers.  The really good teachers work for the kids and not for them today, they work for who the kids will be.  The administration knows that If such a school is being seriously planned due to the problems at JET, then the only thing the administration will and should do is to fix the very real problems at JET.

Regarding: "That's a little harsh don't you think??  Poor Kid"

Well let us look at some things in your post.  You said you have been mud bogging, but on your own property... Great, go for it.   I have done similar things, well I guess it was Snow Bogging, and it was on a closed track and I had premission to be there doing just that.  That is the diffrence, this kid was distroying the roads with out any care or thought as to his actions

And granted it does seem to be a lesser sin that drinking or drugs or the such, but should we really teach the kids to be irresponsible for just the little things?  If we do it will not be long before the little things become the big things.  Today they justify tearing up the roads "because it was fun and no one got hurt"  Then it becomes the drinking and drugs "SO WHAT they will say," I ain't hurting no one but myself"  A few years latter they can justify robbing the store because. "They got plenty of money, and I just took a little"

Was I really harsh on the kid.  Honestly I wish his/her parents were harsher.  Mine were, and while I did not know it then, I now know that they did it because they loved me. and I am much better off for it.

I'm simple-minded, I guess, so my mind wanders to simple solutions to problems. Scroll to the tornado deaths and injuries now in the news, with more to come. Broadcasts came and sirens sounded, but lots of folks had nowhere to go and no place to take cover. Much sorrow could have been averted had families installed or built themselves an underground storm shelter. I'm not talking about a high-dollar, bomb-proof bunker. I'm thinking a buried septic tank with an entrance hole, or maybe a small structure of concrete blocks with a slab poured at ground level for the roof, buried in the back yard. Such a shelter would accommodate a couple or a young family and a pet or two, and adequate ventilation could be provided by small openings. People would be in there for no more than 20 or 30 minutes, until the roar died down and the danger had passed. I know I'd have such a hole to get in if I lived in the Tornado Belt, and I'd have a crowbar in there in case I needed to move some lumber to get out..

Did anyone hear about the two teenagers at STHS that were caught having sex on the stairs outside of S-Wing? It seems that one of the science teachers was exiting the building and there they were, her with her hands qgainst the wall and him mounted on top of her from behind. Seems that the male perp was caught on tape running up the hallway pulling up his pants. The science teacher notice one important detail. She quipped to another faculty member "that the young man was not even wearing a condom". Really lets you know
what she had her eyes on.

Editor's note: Somehow I never got an incident report on this so I have no comment. I will have to inquire as to why my daily check of reports did not reveal this if true. I'm sure the Sheriff's Office would not filter providing incident reports to the media so it would have to be a mistake.

I  read the two write ups in the wandering minds from two of the guilty parties in the mud bogging incident and I now understand why they don’t understand what they did is wrong.  By the letters they wrote, you can tell they are not very bright.  Both incriminated themselves by admitting they did it, but don’t want to take responsibility for it.  They think it is the county’s fault they messed up the road because the county doesn’t keep the road maintained (that makes it OK?).  They also think it’s OK because the county doesn’t provide them a place to have fun with their vehicles and what they are doing is better than smoking pot, getting drunk or blaring loud music.   Get real!!  An excuse is just that, an excuse.  Grow up , get out there and make mature, responsible citizens of yourself or you’ll become wards of the state.  I guess it will be our fault that you end up in jail, especially since one of you admitted that you won’t stop doing it.  Learn from your mistakes and know that what you do does affect others whether you realize it or not.

I’ve always been taught to clean up behind yourself and don’t leave a mess.  This should be expected by anyone leaving mud or any debris (trash, etc.) on the highway and it would save many tax dollars.  These same individuals probably throw trash out the window all the time with no second thought.  You could be like the loggers currently working behind (Hyw 23 and Country Club Rd).  I don’t know who they are,  but they put down their own gravel on the drive that they made to access the area they are clearing and saved the county time and expense.

Also, if you do not like the laws as written, lobby your elected leaders to change them. Law Enforcement has to enforce the laws on the books.

The county would not have to assume that kind of liability. Just like all these other ORV's. You either post signs or have someone there monitoring and charging admission.  Then when someone enters the property you have them sign a release of liability form.  This idea is actually a very good one and if someone took advantage of it they would make money.  You don't open it just for mud bogging. Rock crawling, hill climbs and just trail riding are important parts of four wheeling.

QUOTE:  Editor's note: The road also saves emergency vehicles the same five minutes reaching your home in case of an emergency. Also, the teens did damage a vehicle of a nearby resident during their "fun."

As far as the car that got damaged during the teens "FUN",  maybe the residents shouldn't have tried to take the law into their own hands and block the roadway. They should have gotten ticketed too.  Maybe next time they will stay out of the way.

I have traveled many roads in the county and have seen many log trucks slinging mud on the highway and they don't seem to do nothing about it. I am an avid hunter and am disgusted to see all the trash thrown out on on public hunting lands but they don't do anything about that either.  I guess the only thing our officers have to do is to ticket a few people for spinning tires.
As far as our officers go, Back in December I had someone pull road rage on me and ram my Jeep on Interstate just inside SC line. The mustang that rammed me ran from the scene.  A passer by managed to get a partial tag. Our highway patrol didn't even write a report.  They said because he ran and he was from georgia there was no sense in it.  He also said he didn't see any visible damage. Well needless to say my wife and 2 year old daughter were in the vehicle with me. PLENTY OF REASON TO WRITE A REPORT.  Its just called LAZY! I even had an eyewitness pull off with me that seen the whole thing and they wouldn't do anything about it.  Well  if it ever happens again (removed)

That's a little harsh don't you think??  Poor Kid.  I myself have been mud bogging, personally it was on my own property and I wasn't tearing up people's driveways and other public roads, but I do have to agree that this is a lot better than being out at parties drinking and doing illegal substances and then driving around killing innocent people.  The people that mud bogg just like to get their trucks dirty, have a little fun, and go on home - I guess it's just a southern thing.  You're probably just a "darn" yanky anyway...so I guess you wouldn't understand....

Just weeks after some 20,000 demonstrators protested what they decried as unequal justice aimed at six black teenagers in the Louisiana town of Jena, controversy is growing over the accounting and disbursing of at least $500,000 donated to pay for the teenagers' legal defense.

Edgefield is time to stand up and help others in need. The sugar factory fire patients hospitalized at the Joseph M Still Burn Center in Augusta and their families are in for a long hard experience. The patients need blood donations. The families are coming a long way to be close to their loved one. They will need every thing from temporary housing, food, money and moral support. It would be nice for Edgefield to be known as the town that gave instead of the town with a greedy business man and dishonest town/county councilmen. How much more money do we need to waste on the town square?

Could you please tell me what the fee is is that you refer to being paid by logging, construction and other companies for the destruction of roads. I am sure this fee that you mention is enough to recoup the entire amount of repairing these roads after each period of use. Also, and even more importantly, if this fee is enough to recoup the damage and is paid, why are the roads left in such poor condition and not repaired immediately?
However, a sincere thank you should be given to the entire police force and council of your area. You must live in a very safe county when there are no drug dealers, thieves, con artist or drunk drivers left to concentrate your attentions on. If ever in your town I look forward to seeing those logging trucks pulled over beside the road recieving tickets for the mud (foreign substance) left on the highway. I am sure they would ticket all and not selectively enforce this ordnance.

Editor's note: There is no "fee" that is paid. The logging, timber, and construction companies pay out of their own pockets, not the taxpayers, to repair the damages they do to county and state roads in order to avoid the fines.

To the lady defending the mud boggers, yes the Police Officers do have better things to do, that is why it is so ridiculous for these adult males to be out acting like children on public access roads.  This road is obviously for use by home owners to get to where they live.  How would you feel if they came to your house and tore up your driveway so you could not get to your home or so emergency personnel could not get to you in case of an emergency?  You’d be filing charges also.

If they want to play, then get in the woods on someone’s property that doesn’t care if they leave mud bogs behind.

Unfortunately, rules and charges have to be made for people like this who care only about themselves and their “fun” and have no regard for others and their well being.

The issue of Edgefield county charging people with leaving a foreign substance on the road is cause for worry. Just how far will they take it.I am not in support of doing damage to public roads, but we live in a rural area and agri business is a big part of Edgefield county. There are logging companies, farmers, hunters etc.We all sometimes may leave the foreign substance on the black top(red clay).Maybe we should all thank God we got the rain that we were needing so badly.

Relandscaping the town square is like putting new light bulbs in a haunted house.Instead of "landscaping" they should build a shelter for the kids at parker and jet that are getting out of school.they have to stand in the weather hot or raining when they are dismissed at the end of the day.The weather makes or promotes alot of kids being sick, which inturn kids are out of school and the school looses more money. But then again we have alot of burned out light bulbs on all of our haunted council seats. Our childrens health and wellfare or grass and flowers.

Editor's note: The Town of Edgefield cannot expend funds on school property. That must be done by the school district, which is run by the School Board, not the town council. They are two different government entities.

How are you'll going to charge these "mudders" with putting foreign substance on the road, when I know of one place the road is solid orange from log trucks.  Hey, why don't you charge them?!?!  If they are going to charge us they need to charge them, they put twice as much mud, I mean "foreign substance" on the road.  I agree with the person that wrote in earlier, we wouldn't be playing on these roads if they weren't already messed up.  Our goal isn't to go destroy county property, it's to have fun.  We could be sitting up town in gas station parking lots with music blarring and talking real loud, but that's not us.  Do they actually think that giving tickets is going to stop this, I hope not!  We've been doing it for years and don't have any plans of stopping.

Dear Editor,
As a resident that lives down one of the roads the boys like to mud bog on, I would like to respond to the letter written by Ms. Swearingen.  We have two dirt roads available to exit our home.  The county maintains both.  One they gravel every now and then the other they do not.  When asked why they don't gravel it we were told that since no one lives on the road it is an expense they do not want to bear.  Both roads were scraped in December and were in great condition.  The one that does not get gravel cuts about 5 minutes of drive time off of our drive to North Augusta.  That's not much time, but it is nice to have that option.

In January when we started getting rain, the residents stopped using the ungraveled road so it would still be drivable after it dried.  Well, thanks to the boys wanting to have fun we will not be able to use this road until
the county scrapes it again.  My husband and I both have 4-wheel drive and like to have fun just like the next person, but choose not to destroy the road.

If the boys want to have this kind of fun maybe they need to find a friend that has a road or a piece of property they can make a muddy mess.  Or maybe Ms. Swearingen can provide it for them.

By the way, it's not just the Edgefield County Sheriff's Department that is involved in hunting down the mud boggers. I just have to go to the end of my driveway to find them. They know that what they are doing is wrong.  When they see a vehicle parked blocking the way they do a quick turn around and high tail it, spinning tires and throwing mud and dirt every where.  During last Fridays episode, the boys were driving approximately 50 miles an hour on a dirt road with curves. They could have had a head on collision with another driver had someone been driving in the opposite direction. These are county roads and your tax dollars the boys are wasting.  I for one am tired of it.

Editor's note: The road also saves emergency vehicles the same five minutes reaching your home in case of an emergency. Also, the teens did damage a vehicle of a nearby resident during their "fun".

First off I want to start by saying it is funny how you pick and choose what you want posted on your site. You very rarely post anything that goes against what you believe. That is not right. You should post everything whether you agree or not and then voice your opinion if you don't agree.
Secondly I want to say that I agree with Sharon Swearingen.  As I have emailed you recently about this and it was not posted. These roads are not taken care of properly and not be expected to stay in good shape when it rains. You could drive down them in a car and they are going to get tore up. As far as people getting charged with putting a foreign substance on the road. That is ridiculous.  Both Grandpa and Highway 23 are PUBLIC roads so as long as you are driving down two public roads how can you get charged with that.  I feel like Sharon said if the county sees these roads as a problem they need to put rock down or spend the money and pave them. I would also like to say that if the government would open a tract of land for four wheelers to use as a designated off road park that these problems would stop. Four wheeling is a sport although not highly recognized by a lot of people.  The closet ORV park is Gulches about 2 hours from here. If they were to designate some land and have someone watch the land and charge admission I guarantee they will make money and at the same time stop a lot of these existing problems.  The problem is that there are no legal places around here to four wheel.  I honestly have to say that if any of these teens where my sons I would not punish them because I would rather they get ticketed for that rather than doing drugs or killing someone.

Editor's note: I do not "pick and choose" what gets posted. (Unless the post breaks the rules listed above). I welcome all views and will always post comments that are derogitory towards me personally at the top of the page and have done so for three years. If you had a post that did not get posted it was either breaking the rules, was sent with more than one post in one day, (see rules again), or was in the emails that were lost in the computer problems yesterday.

The county is not going to open a mud bogging park and assume that kind of a liability.

Also, if you do not like the laws as written, lobby your elected leaders to change them. Law Enforcement has to enforce the laws on the books.

I have a question, how long can an individual run a paper tag on their vehicle? Out (removed) of Edgefield at the gas station the young man who services all the local law enforcement vehicles has been running a paper tag on his big red dodge truck for at least six months. If the cops who hang out there have not noticed, this is very scary or have they noticed and this is a special privilege. Just wondering as I have a few vehicles I’d love to be able to run a paper tag on…

Editor's note: A paper tag is good for 45 days. Work performed on law enforcement vehicles, to my understanding, is done at the county shop.

Is it not natural for mud to get on the road? How far is Edgefield County going to take this? Is $4,000 to much to clean a road, give me a shovel and I will clean it for 1/2 that!!  Are we, as residents of Edgefield willing to allow our citizens to be charged with felonies due to getting mud on the road? I think you should call upon the SCDOT and try charging them for not paving or putting gravel on the road in the first place. Don't you think it would be cheaper and easlier to gravel/pave the road and not have to clean them everytime it rains... thanks, but no thanks

Concerning your comment....thank you.  I'd like the same for you.  But I didn't ask what Christians want in general.  I asked what exactly do Christians want in terms of being able to practice their faith that they currently are not allowed to do.  What are you not getting that some other person of another faith is getting in this country in terms of practicing your faith in God?  What is being taken from you in terms of practicing your faith that is not being taken from others of a different faith?  How is the gov't treating Christians differently than non-Christians in terms of practicing faith?  I just can't put my finger on just how Christians are being treated unfairly in terms of being allowed to practice religion compared to Jews, Muslems etc....

If you have an answer/opinion on these questions, post them.  I am not interested in answers to questions I didn't ask.

Depends on where it is.  At their homes, or or someone's private property - the school is wrong.  I'd defend your and their right to pray to whomever they want, as long as it isn't on public property.  If, on the grounds of a taxpayer owned school, I am pretty sure the Supreme Court disagrees with you.

In reply to "Love edgefielddaily-hate you". This statement just rattles me a bit, how can anyone say they hate someone?  I as an individual may not agree with everyone else's views or life style, but I certainly don't hate people. I think we need to look at situations as people issues and get off the race soap box. I read the articles and comments that people make and I feel as though we are going back in time instead of forward.
As a Christian I think God is very disappointed about how we treat one another.  Don't get me wrong I'm not perfect, but I don't treat people a certain way based on skin color or ethic/cultural background. If I don't like or agree with a person's statement or actions I pray that I'll try and learn something from it and gain some wisdom and maybe God can teach us both something positive from it and help us to grow.
To say you hate someone because you don't agree with their views is not a statement to be made light of and throw caution to the wind, be careful what you say!

This is regarding the person who quoted the 1st amendment of the US Constitution in response to another poster. I know you typed it in your keyboards but did you actually read it? Can you comprehend it? I think you need to look at it and read it again.
Bill of Rights
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Now I will help you comprehend the part you must have missed. The part I want to help you with  reads "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech ". Do you understand what free means? When you or anyone else, including the Government, tells me I can't pray out loud it directly conflicts with these 12 words and takes away my (look here's that word again) freedom. When a school tell a group of kids that they can't meet before school and pray, which has been done many times in this country, it is a direct conflict with our constitutionand their freedom has been removed again. People like you only bring up the constitution when it benefits you and then only want to use the parts that benefit your cause. In your response to someone you wrote "are you familiar with our constitution?" Well I will say that is about all you are, with the constitution, is familiar with it because you sure as heck don't know it. While we are the subject of the constitution, did you know that a lot of those signatures on the constitution were from preachers and almost everyone of them were men of God. I am willing to bet that if they could have looked into the future, and saw someone like you and the politicians we have today, they would have written it a lot different. It most likely would have been written in a way that it would not be able to misconstrued the way you and many others have.

I have a question and a comment regarding the discussion about teen age road vandals and then Grandpa Road

First the teenagers are driving round in what look like new a 4 wheel drive pick-up trucks with all the bells and whistles.

What are the parents thinking?  GEE! “My hormonal crazed teenager who acts like a 6 year at home would never do any thing so disrespectful with this powerful machine”. Of course look who the examples set by the 30-39 year old men on Grandpa Road. One “good old boy” was arrested for his disorderly conduct. At the ripe old age of 33 he still has not learned what respect means. On the other maybe the kids learn at home, it just the Southern way.

Second As to Grandpa Road why is the county maintaining a privately owned road, no one lives on it.

Is this to make it convenient for the land owner to have access for person enjoyment? Neither the county nor state will claim the dirt road next to my land so they won’t have to maintain it and at lest 3 families live on it. They did for The Man why not for some one else?

To The City Government of North Augusta, South Carolina:

The ashphalt; ( black top ); on Bunting Drive, between Hammond Hill Elementary School and Martintown Road, is still in very bad shape, espesially considering it is "supposed to be" brand new !!!!

When may the citizens of North Augusta, SC expect this terrible excuss of a paving job to be finally corrected ??!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, how about punishing these "inconsiderate" businesses and private citizens who will not, i repeat; will not turn their water sprinkling systems off during sub-freezing temperatures !!!!  I have personally seen these safety hazards very close to hammond hill school !!

I like the idea of giving the mud boggers a shovel and making them fix the road. There are consquences for everything you do . It could make them think twice about what they choose to do and might even keep them from doing something more serious in the future. If it were my child, he would be out there doing it anyway even if the law didn't make him.

Editor's note: I have been told that the parents of one of the teens has actually gone mud bogging with the teen. I do not know if that is true, but one
parent of the teens involved called the Sheriff's Office to complain that I reported the Scupin Road incident. How sad it that?

So you poor folks in Edgefield County bemoan the fate that put your schools in the hands of a bunch of idiots. I express my heartfelt condolences to you, but here in Aiken County we have a few idiots of our own. One in particular has managed to find a racial slur in the pricing of a fried chicken menu selection at a local eatery. Brendolyn Jenkins said calling a mixed pieces plate the Obama special was a racial slur. My, what some people's busy little minds can conjure up. If this keeps up my next call will be to my root doctor. It will take his magic to get this curse off the fried chicken diner.

Thank God for Fox Creek. We should all support this school, since it keeps this undesirable element away from our kids! The mud bogging is just one more example of how little respect they have for anyone or anything.  The parents must be AWOL!

About the "mud boggers", first I do own and use a four-wheel drive, like most owners of such vehicles I use it for utilitarian purposes, and playing on trails and in parks designated for such use, not to tear up roads which service people's houses, land etc. I agree totally with putting an end to people destroying a road, but ask yourself, does the punishment of a felony fit the crime? Should the SCDOT staff in Edgefield be charged with felonies because they left foot deep ruts in my front yard far from the right-of-way and faild to fix it? I say simply make the "mud boggers" pay for repairs, that will put an end to it I assure you, trail entry fee's are far cheaper. The people living on roads with cronic problems of trucks playing on them as well as the sheriff's department when responding to said complaints would do well to point out to the "mud boggers" that there are off-road parks which they can go play in without fear of paying to fix a road. A simple intern et search for things like "Off-road park South Carolina" and "Jeep trails South Carolina" will return many such places There is a fine line here too, how does the sheriff's department determine if these are people just plain tearing up a road for fun as the photo's would indicate, vs someone legitimately using a road while driving a four-wheel drive at a time when the roads are wet? Remember also that these are public roads paid for repairs by the tax payer, everyone has a right to use them to travel, but not to intentionally damage them. This is mostly just a education issue, I think very few of those tearing up roads for fun have stopped to think about what they are doing and how much it costs us as taxpayers to fix.

I don't think anyone in any government jobs should be allowed to drive government cars home. If you work in a position that you use a car then drive your own to work and then get the government car to do your job. No one pays gas for me to get to my job or to take my children to day care or to school or to get back home at the end of my workday. If you are not on company business then the vehicle should be parked. We should be demanding this. There should be no exceptions. Exceptions leave loop holes.

Editor's note: I support Sheriff's Deputies having a patrol car at their disposal 24/7. I would much rather a deputy be able to dress and respond to an emergency from home than to have to drive to the Sheriff's Office to pick up a car, then respond.

Don't get me wrong growing up we use to mudbog but we did not do it on public access roads we did it on old logging trails or private property that our family of friends owned because it was not polite to tear up a public road.  these people Teens and grown-ups must understand.  for a person who is in dire need of help weather it be fire, ems,or law if these roads are messed up then we have to find another way around which means time which means loss of property,or worse I think the new law about the dirt road is right and these teens caught tearing up the dirt road should pay and if the kid does not want to tell who the others where then he should have to bare the whole punishment, and the parents should not complain they need to think what if it was their family down that road and they needed help.

Well I guess Bettis Rainsford is planning for the Government to pay for his project of re-doing the town square.

Just how many buildings does Mr. Rainsford own in the town? Probably over 75% of all the property in town and I guess he feels he will finally rent these dilapidated properties when the town is finished according to his plans.  Of course the Mayor could not be in on this since He and Bettis are only partners in the Edgefield Construction Co.  Wonder which company will do the construction?? Why is it, whenever a job is done in Edgefield,  only one company is awarded the contract.  I also think we need to re-name the town as RAINSFORDVILLE.

There should be a law against for Mr Rainsford having his people apply for Grants from the Government, and then his company does all the work.

I also expect to see a 20 foot statue of Bettis on the square with his hands in the Tax Payers pocket??

Editor's note: Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham's construction company cannot do the work for the town. I believe that would be a direct conflict of interest. There is a need for reworking the square in my opinion and it is something that has been discussed for some time now. The fountain is constantly under repair, the irrigation system was not properly thought out when installed, and I personally would like to see a replica of the old gazebo that once stood on the square put in place where the fountain now sits.

Mr. Rainsford was not involved in any of the talks that I have been privy to regarding the renovations.

The matter will be open for public commets at the Edgefield Town Council meeting at 5:30 pm today at the lower level of the Town Hall.

web posted February 2, 2008

To fine the "mud boggers" as they call them is just plain ridiculous. And while they're at it , are they going to give fines to the logging companies and are they going to fine the people that live on these roads that have to access these roads and run into sticky situations?Come-on, get real, we know this is just about more "blood being squeeze from the turnip", not road maintainence .I might would support it if they maintain the prave roads in Edgefield county. But come on face it, it's just another way of them getting money to misuse. The roads in the area are terrible, they don't fix them correctly. If you don't believe me, just take a ride out Walker Rd ( and it was suppose to be fixed back during the summer of 2007 ). But I did notice that the road contions are much better out toward Sweetwater Rd/Merriweather area. Maybe that's where all the funding is going, Ya think!!!

RE: “mud bogging” on county roads.

I have no sympathy for the any trouble the drivers got themselves into for vandalizing a public road but please clarify something for me it was stated “all charged with putting a foreign substance on the roadway”. Does this refer to the mud build up on the paved road as they come off Grandpa Road? If this is true the logging trucks are the worst offenders of this issue and cleaning the road should be part of their business. More than once I have slowed down because of the mud left by the logging trucks, especially on a curvy road.  The laws have to be the same for every person and business.

An idea!  “The Man” got his road maintained for free, maybe he could do the clean up with all his extraterrestrial helpers

Editor's note:  Yes, logging trucks can also be cited under the same law.

Hey "Chief" of CountyLine, I was wondering when you were going to call the rest of the so called "Bad Apples" for a sit down? Or is there some kind of discrimination thing going on? You made a deal after a board meeting with members to stay. So what makes them different? They were involved in the blow up just like everyone else.

As you stated before, you don't have to answer to anyone, you do what you want, when you want to. You got that so called board of CountyLine right were you want them don't ya?

PS: found them books yet?

Looks like the "Bad Apples" are in control of CountyLine.
You don't have copies of 2005 and 2006 records? You miss-placed medical documents? You started doing physicals, Hepatitis shots and Respirator fit testing too after the so called "Bad-Apples" brought it up?

I keep reading the stories on police having to shoot pit bull dogs. I love dogs but when are people going to learn that a pit bull is not a dog you need to have. They are vicious killers. I think you should have to have a permit to own one. I noticed too that the dog shot didn't have a collar on it like so many others. Pit bulls are gangsta dogs and so are the owners. Thats why they have them because its cool with the gangsta crowd like Michael Vick. Thats where these owners need to be, in JAIL!!!!!!!

Its about time the county starts charging people for tearing up the dirt roads. We live on one that every time it rains a bunch of kids will come out with their trucks and 4x4's and make it a mudhole. (Darn) right make them pay. Maybe if they pay for fixing the roads the money can be used to add gravel or better yet pave it!!!

So now people are against people playing in mud. So Mr.Pettigrew is well off why not have him build a place so people can play in the mud. Or get the owner of Edgefield to build a place. The big man in town. I played on dirt roads from the age of 15 till 49. Probaly will try it again when I hit 50. It's costs 125.00 dollars to 175.00 a hour to fix dirt roads, does these people work for the scdot, Please let them know they are being cheated out of a lot of money. If they need to know someone cheaper I can get mexicans and a person to teach them to scrape dirt roads.

Editor's note: The cost per hour is derived by accounting for the machinery, cost of fuel, pay, taxes and benefits, and other associated costs. Not the cost of an employee alone.

You once said on here....   "It is Huckabee’s stand on the Fair Tax that has driven him to be the number one candidate on the Republican ticket, even though the press refuses to admit it."

And I asked you the basis for this opinion.

And you answered:

"Editor's note: The basis for my opinion is just that, mine."

Since Huck's win in Iowa, what has occured that would make someone other than you form this opinion?  Since Huck is the only one behind the Fair Tax, would you say the Fair Tax is not in favor with voters, or was Huck's win in Iowa supported by the religious right and not the Fair Tax?

Editor's note: As I have said before, I voted in the Republican primary and did not vote for Huckabee. I agree with his stance on the Fair Tax and still support my statement that his support of the plan is what vaulted him to one of the top candidates, and at the time the top candidate. As the process moves forward people begin to gravitate towards the press anointed leaders in the race. The national media's darling is McCain because he is a liberal Republican. McCain actually lost support of South Carolinians since his 2000 race against Pres. Bush. In 2000 McCain took 42% compared to his 33% in 2008.

I would not say that the recent elections prove Americans are not in favor of the Fair Tax because Huckabee is not back in the forefront right now. He remains a contender in spite of not having the funding of Romney and McCain. That speaks volumes to his support of the plan and what it brings to the table.

I myself as a resident of Edgefield county believe that ticketing people on Grandpa road is a load of bull. If they are that concerned about the dirt roads then they need to pave them. I use Grandpa road as a shortcut lots of times. I have been down it shortly after being graded and with alittle rain it is practically impassable without four wheel drive. Yes you could go down it in two wheel drive but you might "Tear it up" and no matter how you drive down it your going to get mud on the main highway when you pull on to it.  Especially those of us that have aggresive tread tires on our trucks.  This sounds like one more way Edgefield county to screw its people.

Editor's note: There is a difference between "driving" on the roads and mud bogging.

As a parent of two W.E.Parker students I was VERY impressed with the way the emergency situation was handled on Tuesday of this week. Mrs. Holmes took command of the situation and everyone was evacuated safely and smoothly. The teachers did a fine job with the students at the Edgefield gym. None appeared to be overly excited which could have caused considerable tension and anguish among the students. All of the responding emergency personnel did a great job and need to be commended as well. I hope the perpetrator will be caught and punished.

Mr. Editor,
Thank you for all of the information you provide to the citizens of Edgefield County.  However, I have a suggestion.  The Crime Blotter is useful information as it lets the citizens know of some lawless actions in the county when law enforcement has been involved.  We do not have a means of follow-up to these actions to let the citizens know how well the follow-up legal actions are doing.  For example, I will pick the January 14th Blotter.  I am assuming the first three names on the blotter are the Mexicans mentioned in your article of “Here’s Your Card”, on January 21st.  There were two other items in the Wandering Minds I believe associated with this.  In this day and time of Political Activities, especially about illegal persons, we, the citizens need to know how well we are served after law enforcement has been involved.

Is it possible for Edgefield Daily to take a sample ever so often of the items in the Police Blotter and a follow-up provided to your readers of the legal actions against the individuals listed.  I believe the citizens would like to read and share information of how we, Edgefield County, are doing against law breakers.  Maybe the Here’s Your Card case could be your first.

Thanks again for caring about what happens to Edgefield County and its citizens.

Editor's note: Thank you for reading. EdgefieldDaily.com reports every arrest. The On The Record section is being discontinued since the Edgefield Clerk of Court now makes all records available online. Any name listed in any report or the Crime Blotter can be inserted into the search page made available for the disposition of the case, including traffic violations.
