Editor's post:

I've heard others make observations similar to a recent post about Edgefield's eyesores. Some places are getting so tacky and cluttered there's no way they can avoid criticism. Owners or operators, please tidy up a bit. Edgefield has spent big bucks to look nice. Do your part. As for the trashy yards and mini-jungles, the abandoned tin-covered building, and the derelict farm equipment sitting in the kudzu, there surely is an ordinance that deals with such matters. If we don't have one, we need to draft one.

What a horrible story on the foster mother that got arrested. They should do the same thing to her that she did to the poor kid and then trow her under the jail. I'm still furious over the whole thing. I hope they never let her out of jail

Editor's note: Currently Belinda Cooper is being held on a $70,000 bond. Additional charges are most likely coming and will raise the bond even higher. You have no idea how brutal the videos are.

The following was received from the Executive Director of Development of the SCAPCS in response to my question regarding whether colleges accept students based on school accreditation. It has not been edited for content or grammatical errors. :-)

Charter schools in SC are authorized by local school districts and considered public schools with the same standards and qualifications as any other public school.  In addition, many charter schools, similar to their district school counterparts can elect to seek accreditation through the Southern Accreditation Council of Schools (SACS).

However, whether accredited by SACS or not, the student transcript from a charter school must be respects by colleges and universities on the same basis as any other public school, including state scholarship programs.  Charter schools are school of choice and accountability.  All SC charter schools in SC are currently outperforming their local school district counterparts in graduation rates and other achievement scores.  You should ask the school that you are interest in to provide you with that information.

A list of all public charter schools can be found on our website at www.sccharterschools.org

Editor's note: I just report what takes place. If someone gets mad it is because I reported something they wanted to keep quiet. Two years ago that was possible, but not anymore.

I was told by the ECSD Office that all the changes are being made by the New Administration at MMS.  The only new administrator is the principal.  I was told this when I asked about the  "Tree."  So I guess the ECSD Office is blaming her as well.
web posted February 28, 2007

In response to the "eye sores" around Edgefield, there are many more than that. (He) moved to the building in Edgefield owned by Bettis Rainsford and left a mess behind on Hwy. 25.  I agree, that shouldn't be
allowed especially considering that it is in down town Edgefield!  The place by the tressel in Edgefield is a nice young man trying to make a living.  He'd be worthy of some "helping hands" to make his business
more attractive.  Look around though, these are not the only two eye sores.
web posted February 28, 2007

I have to agree with the previous post regarding the new doors at MMS - they do look very prison-like.   I am tempted to go look at some schools in the worst areas of Augusta to see if they have such institutional looking doors as a comparison.  Does the behavior of students attending MMS warrant this prison-like atmosphere being created?  Or could there be such a threat from terrorist cells in Edgefield County that the old doors weren't strong enough?  No, I think the new principal takes her job as a warden seriously.  Bars on the windows, a tower and barbed security fencing can't be far behind.

I find it laughable and sad that ECSD/MMS could not find a more aesthetically pleasing way to beef up the doors.  First impressions are everything. These doors do not do much to make one feel comfortable about the type of atmosphere may be encountered behind them.
web posted February 27, 2007

In response to the "doors at MMS" comment. You people are unfreakin'believable. Your "tree" story backfired, so now you can't find anything else to complain about except the doors?????  I'm guessing you blame the principal for that too!

Why don't you try SUPPORTING the school or volunteering your time doing something worthwhile? Are you even a parent of a child there? If so, when was the last time you said or did something POSITIVE for your child's school?  If you can't find anything positive to say, then I've got a new word for you....H O M E    S C H O O L.  Then, you can do everything just the way you want. You can even choose what kind of doors you'd like to have.

There is a County Council meeting next Tuesday night (Mar. 6). Does the public have any idea what is to do discussed during the meeting?  No!  Is there an agenda? Look for it tacked to the Council building door… about 45 minutes before the meeting starts. No wait – make that 10 minutes! Oh wait, sometimes it’s not posted. Is there any way to learn about the details being discussed? There is, if you wait until the public is invited to speak. Of course that happens after the council has voted on the item discussed! Is this any way to run a county? But Hey, “The Public is Invited”

Editor's note: The Agenda must be released 24 hours in advance, at minimum. If provided, EdgefieldDaily.com will post the agenda prior to the meeting. The agenda deadline is one week before the meeting. The budget debate and a records debate will no doubt take the forefront for the next few months in addition to another pressing issue.

I am kind of confused about the (time) that Dr.Murph of Fox Creek High School has with the school's
athletic director.  They seem to be away from school a lot on school time.  I am sure that they must be doing
school business or something cause how else could you explain this.  Why couldn't one person do the
business that it has taken two to do for the past three or four months?  This school does not seem to be
big enough to require this.

I do not want to get into a contest between two news forms, however, I just received my copy of the Quill and i quote "Marriage Records, Edgefield County Marriage Records on microfilm have been placed in theTompkins Library on PERMANENT LOAN by the generosity of Edgefield County Archivist, Tricia Price Glenn." just wandering

Editor's note: I have no idea why EdgefieldDaily.com is being attacked for quoting the same information. It may be a case of the "hit dog barks first" syndrome.

I hate to embarrass anyone but we have a couple of places in Edgefield that are really eye sores. One is the place by the railroad tressel that sells used items. I realize that it is hard to keep those kind of places looking neat. I myself, like to stop and look for treasures at thrift stores but that one is really bad looking. Maybe some kind of fence could be added to hide the clutter. The other is the place on main street that sells spoons or something. Not attractive at all. With Edgefield trying to draw shoppers in to our area, places of business need to put their best foot forward and these places just take away. I have never stopped to look at anything any of these have to offer because their look just turns me off. I might be missing some great items and they are missing a customer. Does Edgefield have some kind of ordinance to protect the town? I would think that the business owers in town would be upset by this too. It just pulls down the whole image.
web posted February 27, 2007

Its a shame that the teachers in Edgefield and Aiken counties did not see fit to make the  Battle of Aiken a field trip for all the US and SC history classes. It does not cost them one cent for admission on Friday, the day set aside for schools. they can bring a bag lunch or purchase food,so that doesn't have to be a cost either, it costs them time and a bus driver. What a waste of a valuable learning opportunity just minutes away.

Editor's note: Why cloud the minds of our youth with facts? That goes against political correctness.

Why does the Tompkins Genealogical Library need the marriage records? I got a copy of my parents license at the Probate Court.  They have all of the licenses that have been issued in the county as far back as licenses go.  They are located in the courthouse just a hop, skip and jump from the other place so I don't understand why taxpayers have to provide this Tompkins place the same thing when they are already available so close by.  What's the deal?  Who else are we, the taxpayers, providing redundant copies to and
why?

Editor's note: Promoting a private entity over the government entity is a way to direct funds to certian individual(s), not the county, who owns the records.

Sounds to me like The Quill is just another worthless tabloid.  They should have been chastizing this Carol Hardy Bryan chick instead of you, Edgefield Daily.  If they have campaign buttons tell them to save me a Giuliani!
web posted February 26, 2007

Wow!  What a great Editor's note.  First, Carol Hardy Bryan did not make a false statement.  She simply misunderstood what was discussed at the last board meeting.  She is entitled to make mistakes, after all she is only a newsletter editor.  She can just make a correction in the next issue. (CYA) However, you claim to be a true journalist.  You should have come by the Edgefield County Archives and/or the Tompkins Library and asked for all the facts in the matter.  Instead, you relied on slander and conspiracy theories.  Second, I do not recall any literature being passed out at the Tompkins Library, only a little bumper sticker sitting inconspicuously on someone's personal desk.  Sounds like you are not above defamation of character as well.  Tell me, do you actually get a degree in "yellow journalism" or did it come in a cereal box?

Editor's note: My degree came from a bubble gum machine at a discount grocery store. However, given that fact, I never "misunderstand" what is said at a public meeting. I give accurate quotes. So I guess those chosen by your side are less competent than some idiot with a degree from a bubble gum machine. You win.   I hope you feel better now. As to campaigning, be very careful what you ask for. You may not like the results.

Editor's post: The Wandering Minds has grown to the point that we will no longer be able to keep more than one month's comments on the active Wandering Minds Section at a time. In the past, all of 2005 was contained on a single page. In 2006 we had to Archive the page every three months. The popularity has grown to a point that the page will be archived every month. An Archives page will be created that will hold the sections and dates archived. EdgefieldDaily.com continues to lead the way as the most interactive media outlet in the county. EdgefieldDaily.com often times publishes more reader comments in a day than both of the local printed papers do in a month combined.
web posted February 24, 2007

This post is from the Edgefield County Archives Office: "The mircofilm records that were sent to the Tompkins Genealogical Library are NOT on permanent loan.  The library is using them to build a more comprehensive index. These Marriage Records are currently indexed only by the name of the groom - the index being compiled by the library will also include the bride's name.  Once this task is finished the Archives will get the records back plus a much improved index to go with them. The Quill, was mistaken in reporting the records were on permanent loan."
web posted February 24, 2007

Once again Edgefielddaily.com has jumped the gun without doing any proper investigative journalism, relying instead on reporting gossip and hearsay.  The report on the "desperately needed records purchased by county now on "permanent loan" to private entity" is absolutely incorrect.  Carol Hardy Bryan was mistaken in her report in the March/April issue of Quill.  The Edgefield County Marriage Records are not on permanent loan to the Tompkins Library.  They are on temporary loan and it is only the three rolls of indexes that are involved.  These indexes are only arranged by the groom's name, thereby making them difficult for genealogists to use if they only have the name of the bride.  The Edgefield County Archivist, Tricia P. Glenn, does not have the volunteers to create an index that will include both the name of the groom and the bride.  Therefore, she made an agreement with the Tompkins Library that allows library volunteers to create this index that will be housed at the Edgefield County Archives and the Tompkins Library.  The three rolls of microfilm will be returned to the Edgefield County Archives as soon as this project is completed in the next few months.  This new index will be a great asset to the thousands of visitors who come to Edgefield each year specifically to research their family history.  Next time you want to report the "news," why don't you actually do some investigation first, instead of going for the sensationalism.

Editor's note: Okay, let's see, I am now to blame for your organization providing bad information? (Or did you just get caught?) Will the OEDGS be handing out more campaign literature and telling people how to vote in 2008 as you did in the June 2006 primary? When will the Obama or Hillary buttons and stickers be available at the library? I want to be sure I get mine before they run out.

What happen to the science teacher at FCHS?

Editor's note: He has been placed on "administrative leave" (unknown if with or without pay). Science Lead, Mark J. Komoroski was described by FCHS Principle Murph at a 2006 ECBOE meeting attended by the FCHS Board as one of the most dedicated and committed members of the school's staff.

I live in Evans and travel to Edgefield often to do research. I am glad to see records being made available somewhere that the people are at least around when I come to town to complete my work. I have been turned away from the (County) Archives Office because they were closed for lunch or some other reason for hours at a time during the day. I frequent the Tompkin's Library and they say that all the records they have are owned by them. This, they claim, justifies payment to them for copies. If these are county records why do I have to pay the library for the copies and not the town?

Editor's note: The records belong to the County of Edgefield, not the Town of Edgefield or the Tompkin's Library. Funds paid to copy County Public Records should be paid to the County.

web posted February 24, 2007

This note is in response to vague comments from February 19,2007 regarding a perceived lack of appropriate health care here in Edgefield County. I am an 8 year resident of Edgefield County and have utilized the physicians here for my care and that of my children. Never once in the 8 years have I had a negative experience. My daughter is an asthmatic and has required frequent and sometimes emergent care.

I have seen all the family physicians here in the county at one time or another. Office staff and physicians alike have always been helpful, courteous and have responded to my calls or concerns in a very timely manner. Never once have I had the feeling or experience of dealing with a deeply committed and concerned family physician who thought they were "GOD."  Edgefield is BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE to have highly qualified and skillfully trained family physicians to care for the medical needs of the county. These dedicated health care professionals are not just our medical caregivers; they are our friends, family and neighbors. They choose to live in a rural economically depressed area of SC and provide us with a quality of healthcare comparable or better than that of larger more urban areas. I am not ashamed to use my name in making these comments. Many lives have been saved and outstanding health care given because of their exceptional skills and dedication.

The Tompkins Library had become a very private club. Door is looked, after a few visits you have to join to use the facility.  Why would they have any right to free county records, much less ones we have to pay $300 to $400 hundred dollars to copy? Please correct me if I am wrong but the average Joe pays a small fee for the copying of a public record. Does the Queen of New South Wales think she has royal privileges?

Editor's post: Today's Front Page (Main Page) is a bit thin on local reports. There will come a day when the only story on the page will be titled, "Nothing happened in the county today". There was a story I followed throughout the afternoon on Thursday of a woman being run over during a domestic dispute. The green Eagle Talon driven by the man ran across the woman's legs. She was trasported to Aiken Regional for treatment. He was later arrested. However, identifing him would identify the victim, which is why very few domestic cases get reported. There will be more reports on the records situation that is taking place in the Administration/Archives Building and the Courthouse Offices. There is a lot more to this story. More on Saturday and Monday.

RE: Editor's note: "Dr. Keesley said the school does not hold the required accreditations all other county schools (even elementary and middle schools) hold. All public schools are "gifted" a state accreditation, but that is not what colleges and universities accept."

Then how are all the 2006 grads going to college and how are all the 2007 grads being accepted to colleges? FCHS is not SACS accredited yet.  They are working on that.  BUT any child that graduates may be accepted into any college applied for.

I feel very bad for the African American students that do attend FCHS.  They must feel very left out when and if they read your site.  I do not understand why you continue to push the "all white school" thing?

RE: "And all the kids who are "defending" this school, I am sure you are all the spoiled rotten brats of the board members, whose mommy's and daddy's buy brand new cars, and absolutely do nothing wrong in their eyes. " I do believe that MY child was one that wrote in and "defended" her school. She is NOT spoiled, her parent is NOT on the board and she does NOT have a car and probably never will until she gets out of college and can buy one on her own!

Sounds like something Mr. Rogers would do in his neighborhood!  I blame you though Mr. Editor.  He probably got the idea from you posting cartoons on county buildings.  You must have made quite an impression!  Wonder what he called his previous wives?

I am writing in response to the comment about 88.3 radio station. That is a wonderful uplifting station along w/89.7 (His Radio).  More people need to start tuning in instead of turning it to all the hip hop crap that is out there.  It is a wonderful feeling to a parent when your children have friends around and they introduce their friends to these wonderful contemporary christian songs.  I listen to both these stations in my office, car, and home.  People need to wake up and quit letting their children fall victim to the damaging dirty music that is out there.  Parents need to stop buying all those awful, dirty lyric CD's and start buying more contemporary christian CD's.  It only takes a few young people to start the trend.  Also, everyone needs to get the video
"Facing the Giants"!! That is a must for every home.

Editor's post: Today's post is going to a be a bit longer than normal. I am following the arrests of more than a half a dozen people that has been released but was asked to be kept out of the public domain for ongoing investigative reasons. The information will be released in the coming days. Please forgive the limited reports that result from this cooperation with local law enforcement. Those involved have not been included in the Crime Blotter arrest reports, for now, as a result.

On an even more serious note, a prominent teacher at Fox Creek Charter High School is in the forefront after an episode at the school on Monday and another event at a residence on the 2000 block Fox Creek Drive Tuesday morning. EdgefieldDaily.com has received several complaints regarding the teacher over the past two months that were discounted as disgruntled students and parents until now. It seems the early reports were a precursor to events showing the school administration was aware of the situation and did not act, which could have placed students at obvious risk.

Sheriff's Deputies responding to the scene had to use physical force to gain control of the situation involving the teacher at the off campus location on Tuesday morning.

Police reports were not available Tuesday due to the reporting officers still being on duty but should be received on Wednesday. Attempts to reach Fox Creek School Officials were unsuccessful. The teacher was reportedly sent home Monday afternoon, though that has not been confirmed by police reports or school officials. Edgefield County School District Officials contacted on Tuesday were unaware of the events and stated they would be in touch with EdgefieldDaily.com on Wednesday with any information they could provide in relation to the events and the screening process used by Fox Creek for teachers and employees.

EdgefieldDaily.com confirmed at least one "volunteer" at the school is currently facing a charge in the March session of General Sessions Court in another unrelated off campus matter.

What a shinning star Fox Creek Charter High School seems to be in the community. Student, teacher, and volunteer criminal activity. A student caught with drugs allowed back at school within days, accepting expelled students from STH (against district policy), no apparent background checks for volunteers and teachers, and more.

Is anybody paying attention here?

Did I misunderstand the column, Mount Vintage Grapevine in the Edgefield Advertiser on February 14th?  Don't you just feel sorry for them?  Their property has been reassessed outrageously, they have to pay taxes even though they do not have school age children, they have to pave their own roads, they provide their own security therefore they do not need our deputies or emergency personnel, they have to light their own neighborhood and their insurance does not get a break because of the new allocation of fire funds.  With tongue in cheek, I say too bad the rest of the county does not have these problems.

When Mount Vintage was just a gleam in the developer's eye, the Merriweather community began growing at a steady pace.  It continues today and yet there are no recreation facilities or commercial ventures which will help bring revenue into the county.  They have an excellent elementary and middle school but the current charter high school is not without its problems.  There are needs throughout the county.  Wouldn't it be like a breath of fresh air if everyone was concerned with making our world better for all not just our own special interests?

One statement I do agree with is that Councilmen Kitchens and Hudson should be ashamed of themselves.  However, it should not end there all councilmen should be ashamed of themselves.  They should have been more responsive in their dealings and in taking the advice of the previous administrator.  Let's hope Mr. Pettigrew is prepared to advise the current council and whoever takes their place, in a manner which will benefit all of Edgefield County, not just selected pockets of the  community.   Too bad we don't have a countywide representative who would be willing to say, let's make Edgefield County better as a whole and then act accordingly.

Editor's note: You have not lived in Edgefield County very long, evidently. Boss Hog runs this county, not the county council.

To the reader who favors old time hymns...Yes, they are spiritually reviving, but have you ever spent any time listening to 88.3 WAFJ?  This station plays contemporary Christian music and it really ministers to me.  Some of the songs are soft and touching, while others get your spirit hopping.

Today's young people are not all being reached by the older hymns, and sometimes I understand why.  Next time you're in church, listen to the congregation sing a hymn.  Does it sound like a group of people alive with the fire of Jesus, praising God and worshiping His name, or does it sound like a bunch of people going through the motions, singing the songs they've always sung because it's what they've always done?  Whatever the songs, whether hymns or more contemporary Christian music, the point is to worship God, and sometimes that requires a variety of music to meet everyone's individual style of worship.

Editor's note: I work very closely with Sheriff's Deputies each day and have personal friendships with many. I have never heard any of them describe such an attitude nor seen evidence of such.

Noticed Carl Langley's column,  Where has all the good music gone?  This writer wonders also,  there is nothing that touches the heart and soul more than the old hymns in our hymnals.   But instead, churches are going to hymns on the walls, arrangements that we do not even use the hymnals with.   There is nothing prettier than Amazing Grace in our hymnals.   Why change it?

Editor's note: I also enjoy the "old time" hymns.

I was a student of our PUBLIC schools,I did Quite well, but it was my doings, not the schools staff, as with anything get out what you put into it.STHS is a very good school with an excellent staff.I' m sure some put more into their work than others as with any job, but your children will take what they want from there when they go. I had 3 children attend our public schools, all 3 did well at times, sometimes better than others, but it was what they chose to do with what they had been taught.

To the person below asking to be excused for their grammar and spelling because they graduated from STHS and that is why they send their children to Fox Creek -- Your attitude is one of the big reasons some people outside of the Merriwether Community do not support Fox Creek.  It is that "we are better than you" attitude and "STHS is just not good enough for us" belief that turns everyone against Fox Creek.  When I graduated from STHS and went to college, I sat in a freshman English class with two other ST graduates.  When the professor returned our first papers, he said, "I bet the three of you went to Strom Thurmond."  We asked him why he believed we did.  He said, "I can spot ST graduates the first time they write for me in this university.  They already know how to write any type of composition correctly."  I am always amazed when I speak to members of Fox Creek's board, faculty, students, and parents from time to time, how quick they are to criticize Strom Thurmond even when they know you graduated from the school.  I personally do not care if Fox Creek survives or fails, but do not try to elevate yourselves by throwing darts at Strom Thurmond.

This parent could of not graduated from STHS like I did, because he/ she would of known that FCHS is not an accredited high school. This parent is playing a blame game, and the only person to blame is self. The editor is correct, FCHS is not an accredited high school and probably will never be. I would like to know which universities in North Carolina has accepted a student that has not taken the college courses, in order to be able to get into a good University? Also, what is the score that the student made on the SAT to get into a quality university? My son graduated from Winthrop University and his grades were superb, and his SAT scores were very high. Oh, I forgot that grades, and SAT scores do not count at FCHS. Parent wake up, and believe me, it will take more than booze, and drugs to get into a university. Oh, I forgot yes you made a decision, the wrong one when you sent your children to FCHS.

“Ha, good one!”    My decision to send my children to FCHS was based on common sense, sometimes that out weighs an educated decision…….

You made a comment in the past that you had a child that was expelled from FCHS, is that correct? ”was it an educated decision to send your own child to FCHS?”… “I’m not trying to intrude on your family life, but your child’s expulsion (if that was the case) must be the biggest reason for all your negative comments about FCHS”.

You have also made comment in the past on the lack of diversity at FCHS. I really don’t know why that is, but if I had to guess, it has a lot to do with the lack of school supported transportation. I truly don’t believe it’s because the school is full of bigots…. I think that the diversity problem does need to be worked on and hopefully the problem will resolve itself in the near future.

I’m a new reader to this web site and I must say, I do enjoy reading it…..” Thanks”

Editor's note: None of my children have ever been expelled from school. I guess we can add reading comprehension to the list of educational problems you profess. The collective English Department of FCHS could not hold a candle to one of STH's teachers on their best day. I will be happy to compare the resumes if you would like.

You really don't know how the staff is being treated.Maybe one day when a full scale investigation is done on the sheriff and the good ole boy captain you might understand! The staff is on pins and needles at all times because there is no telling what kind of hearsay is being reported whether fact or fiction.
Maybe someday the place won't be ran by intimidation. The deputies do a good job but the public don't know the hidden pressures that are put on them from a man that never really policed in his career just check his record. So deputies keep your head up because we know you really can't tell the truth about what really goes on at that house of pain!

I don't often respond to posts in Wandering Minds. However, at the office today, I became involved in a conversation regarding the new principal at MMS and the comment made on here about her. Since I have two children at this school, I feel  this is not something I could ignore.  First of all, the person who wrote the email needs a lesson in fourth grade spelling. The proper word is "principal"... not "principle". Most important, however, is the content of the post. It is very unfair that the principal was blamed for someone else's  wrongdoing.  If the other half of the story had been told, then those who read Wandering Minds would know the truth. However, some people are much to quick to  make accusations, belittle, judge, and ridicule. They failed to remember that there are ALWAYS two sides to the story. Maybe next time, these folks should conduct a more thorough 'investigation" before posting such negativity.

Furthermore, I'd venture to say that the people behind this are the very same ones who wanted the last principal to be removed. Some folks are never happy, and they obviously feel they have the authority to question decisions made within the school...decisions they know absolutely nothing about. This is the reason she is the principal and you are not. Give her a break. More importantly, give her a CHANCE. Everyone deserves that. Contrary to what was said, there are some people who welcome the change at MMS. There are many of us who appreciate what Mrs. Holmes is doing.

People, Mrs. Holmes doesn't have an "agenda". She is simply trying, to the best of her ability, to do the job that was given to her. She can't do it alone. She needs the respect and support of her faculty AND the community. Only then can MMS be a true success...which SHOULD be our primary concern.

Please excuse my spelling and grammar; I got my diploma from Strom Thurmond High School……..”that’s why my kids go to Fox Creek!!”

Editor's note: Fox Creek, being such a great school, brought the entire school district down in SAT scores. Great work for so few students. They must have worked hard to bring so many others down to a lower level. That is another fact you might want to dismiss. Fox Creek does not hold the accreditation as stated. All District schools do. And, if you are insinuating that you are not very educated because you went to STH - how are we to believe you sending your children to FCHS is an educated decision?
 Thanks for reading.

What is going on with the Mount Vintage re-reassessment? If there is a problem there with reassessment (and I have no doubt there is), then can we not assume there is a problem with the entire county?  If they get re-reassessed, then it should certainly be cause for all property owners elsewhere to rise up and demand the same treatment.  Hey, we may not be quite on the same level, but we deserve the same treatment.  Please keep up posted and thank you again for all you do to bring these things "to light."

Instead you leave a message and go without. When you complain about it then you are told you are wrong for being upset because the "professional" was sick that day. Do doctors, dentists, veternarians etc have a right to to sick day, absolutely, they are human. HOWEVER, it is common courtesy to let your patients know that the office is closed that day. You do not realize the sacrifices these guys make every day just to make sure our county is a safe place to live. I have been checking out your site daily for a little more than a year now.  As I read this article this struck me a absolutely nutty.....a 1,320 linear foot paved trail that would cost $300,000-$400,000 just for the grading work.  Then to read, "Town Administrator Olin Gambrel said the length of the walking trail at the Jaycee Park would be about a quarter of a mile long and the County has agreed to help provide figures of the cost of paving it." This is just a little too much!  You mean to tell me that the grading work will cost $227-$303 per linear foot!  Do you realize this is $1.2Million per mile - and it still has to be paved!  Does a highway even cost that much?  Surely something is amiss here.  What do you think?

I am not opposed to the trail.  I think it is a great idea to give people a place to meet, recreate and get some fresh air.  Trails have proven to increase property values - look at the real estate studies on that subject.  And those fears about trails being magnets for crime - utter nonsense.

To the person wondering about the public meetings regarding a new school Superintendent,  It is not "the peoples time" that the board is wanting to waste, it's there money.  At the January meeting they voted to change the way they get paid.  Before they did not get paid for special meetings, Only for the one regular meeting.  Now they get an extra $100.00 dollars for all the special meetings, and I urge you to look at the board minutes on the web site and see how many "Special" meetings they have already.  Expect a lot more now that they have made it worth their time.  Do some 3rd grade math. $100.00 times 7 members times 4 meetings. Makes the bonus the teachers got look kind of small.

I have a family member that goes to Fox Creek High school and I must say that some of the stuff these "teachers" are having their students do are borderline kindergarten.  For example drinking water and measuring their urine output.  Not only is that disgusting but it is unhealthy, encouraging kids to over drink water which could lead to water toxicity like someone recently died of trying to win a Nintendo Wii.  Also they are having homework assignments which include crayon coloring pages. High School is supposed to prepare you ,somewhat, for college not pre-k. These kids are going to be shocked when they get into college and are told to write term papers in pen not crayon.  And all the kids who are "defending" this school, I am sure you are all the spoiled rotten brats of the board members, whose mommy's and daddy's buy brand new cars, and absolutely do nothing wrong in their eyes.  Those that think they are above public schools..  News flash...mommy and daddy wont be able to sharpen your crayons for you in the real world.

Editor's note: I speak to several students and parents on a regular basis. Most contend that some teachers have no idea how to teach or are unable to teach the subject they are given. In addition, FCHS has stooped to allowing students expelled from Strom Thurmond to attend FCHS just to boost attendance records. So not only are drug users allowed to stay in school after being caught on campus with drugs, but the school is now seeking the worst of the worst just to get money. Oh, and the parents are offering a cash "bar" at a fund raiser.  I guess that fits in with allowing someone expelled for being drunk at school at STH to be allowed to attend FCHS. What an inspiration they are to the academic environment in Edgefield County. That is not opinion, that is fact. I welcome any FCHS Board member or school official to sit down to an open interview. Don't count on it, it won't happen, but the offer remains on the table. I did not know that FCHS was still endorsing the use of crayons, but considering the actions and mentality of their school board members... nothing surprises me.

Editor's note: A basement is always the best place to seek shelter during a violent weather event. If no basement is available a center location in the home, such as a bathroom or hallway, is the second best. If in a mobile home you should seek a secure structure such as a school or designated storm shelter.

Your report fails to give a complete view of that Monday evening meeting.  In your report it sounds like Mayor W. Campbell was the only "head-butter" in the room.  I say one councilman owes a public apology to one town citizen for what I say was a rude and uncalled for outburst in which he practically called her a liar.  Further he said she did not have any business there because she was not a Johnston resident.  Surprise surprise, Burton, she was.  She had every right so express her view.

Burton's attitude further made it very clear what he thinks of anyone who dares express an opinion in the council chamber contrary to his own.  Quote:  The decision, Burton said, belongs to the town council as to where the walking track goes.  Just because a person is elected does not mean he/she can do as he/she pleases.  The elected position means that he "represents" those citizens not rules them.  Maybe Burton's ten year council term has exceeded his poor attitude.  When he stated that "most of us have been on the council over ten years".  I felt that was the best advertisement for term limits.

I will agree that Mayor W. Campbell did not control that meeting like he should and is empowered to do.  He does have a learning curve and should be allowed that time.  Not criticized for his efforts.

Editor's note: Mayor Willie Campbell has withheld public information of breaking stories such as the clearing of charges on former Chief Butch Easler (which EdgefieldDaily.com broke) and other events. There is no "learning curve" when it comes to politics. When elected you are expected to be prepared for the job. If you are not prepared for the job, do not run to take it. At least 1/3 of those speaking in his defense were family members not "the public". A sad note when he has accused town council members of holding secret meetings and then stages a public hearing stacked with family members unknown to the general media for his losing proposition.

You can fool all of the people some of the time, some of the people some of the time, but you will never fool me. I also have statements confirmed that Mayor Campbell knew Chief Easler would be cleared a week before he was fired. Somebody needs to take the shovel away from Mayor Campbell before he buries himself and the town.

The constant disagreement about walking tracks only speaks to the shortsightedness of the local government.  They have explored no alternatives except their own individual ideas.  Time drags on and nothing gets done, again.

Watson Park as it exists could be used with few upgrades to an existing road around the ballfields.  Yes, the existing paved roadway can be used as a walking track also.  One small area ( 300 feet) can be upgraded with crush and run gravel including correcting drainage problems.  "Voila"------ a walking track about one mile long.  The Jaycee Park could also then have a track made of crush and run gravel (runners do not like paved running areas.  They will wear a dirtpath next to the pavement).  I would not put the track nearby hwy. 121.  It is easy to wind it around the playground though and avoid hwy. 121.

Gosh this could be done using existing PARD funds on hand.  Amazing that both "head-butting" camps can do what they want and the town citizens can get TWO tracks almost immediately.  Why is it that a track HAS to be built on a future (if ever) soccer field?

Just an idea that can work.  When I grow up I want to be a town councilman.

During last weeks County Council meeting, a question was asked about the trash all over our county roads. Typical of our Gang of Five they quickly passed the problem on to the county sheriff’s office. “You have a problem with trash on your street? Call the sheriff”. Can these guys do anything right?  By the way, if anyone traveled down Sweetwater Rd. today (Monday) there was a crew picking up trash. Who paid for it? No not the county,  the Mount Vintage developer picked up the cost. Just for your information Mr. Kitchens and Mr. Hudson, Sweetwater Rd. is in your district(s).

Editor's note: Developer Bettis Rainsford did the same thing last year. The sad part is within a few weeks you would not know it was done. The Litter Control Officer for the Sheriff's Office is but one man and can only cover a rotating balance across the 507 square mile area. Kudos to Mr. Rainsford for his efforts. As self serving as it may be, it is a benefit to the county. He is not required to provide the service. You can only imagine what people from an area with 8 feet of snow think when they come to visit our area while it is 60 degrees and how it spurs sales of property on the golf course. It is not all about the "beautification" of the county as it is a promotional tool. That is just reality.

I thought court was where both sides had their say. Not in Edgefield county. It is all who you know not what you did.Why go to court is it is over befoer you get there?

Editor's note: Anyone can appeal a decision. I believe you have 10 days to file your appeal, but check with the Magistrate's Office to be certain.

To the individual “bashing” the ECSO deputy; What is it that you have it out so bad for this man? Did he give you a citation because you broke the law and was doing his job, and now you have resorted to attacking his weight issue? You mentioned that he was in a leadership roll and you are correct. He is where he is because HE IS A LEADER. I know this officer personally. He is a good neighbor and father.  And I do sleep at night knowing that he and his fellow officers are doing their best keeping our county safe. I have had conversations with him, at night and on his own time, seeking advice. I could care less if he couldn’t pass a PT test. You just need to step back, take a deep breath, look in the mirror, and ask yourself; “How can I improve my appearance?”  Not everyone is perfect ‘ya know?

That's what it sounds like to me. Maybe you are the one that needs to get a life. If you are so smart why don't you run for sheriff?

This is in reference to the people responding about the leadership at the sheriff's office. They aren't bashing those two they are merely telling the truth.Setting up a meeting with the sheriff is just a waste of time because he will tell you a lie to your face or the other famous line I WILL CHECK INTO IT AND NEVER GET BACK TO YOU! Don't waste your money backing him. He is not a fair man any man that allows someone to quit and hire them back and promote them over other qualified men and women who stuck with you. That's not fair.It is so good to know that somebody else knows that Edgefield County has a disfunctional sheriff who is afraid tell the truth and be fair.Believe it or not we may have been better off with Sheriff Parker! If he is unfair about his promotions, lie to the public about his miltary service what will he do next! The employees and citizens of Edgefield deserve better! Just check out the turnover rate!

Editor's note: Those serving as local law enforcement officers are competent, knowledgeable, and dedicated. Those who move across the country to take better jobs and higher pay are not a problem of the leadership, unless you want to include the Edgefield County Council who controls the pay of these professionals, or their respective municipalities. Sheriff Dobey, Police Chief's Carter, Aston, and Tanks know I have and will be the first to expose any rouge officer. I place all with my full trust to be honest, competent, and fair in their jobs. That is not to say there is not a better person for their jobs. Each will tell you that if a better person is found they would gladly step aside and do what is best for the public. If you can do a better job, or know someone who can, by all means state so. I have in the past, and will in the future, place my life in their hands while covering volatile situations. It is due to their professionalism and dedication that I do not worry when doing so.

For years I've noticed deserted lots, grown over with weed tangles, and rusting farm equipment that has apparently been abandoned. There an old tin shed, some falling-down houses--just all sorts of eyesores that could be cleaned up, including the yards and porches of some occupied homes. All of it is in and around Edgefield, much of it right along Highway 25 for every visitor or passerby to see. I'll bet they wonder, as I do, why our neighbors don't clean up and clean out. I also wonder why, if they won't, they are not required by law or ordinance to do so. Surely there's a way to deal with this kind of issue in our town.

There is no way he could pass PT at the Academy in his condition , and the Sheriff has him in a Leadership Roll. As for setting a meeting with the Sheriff, I will not waste my time. I will just put my money where my mouth is and help fund the campaign of our next Sheriff. One thing is for sure, when the next sheriff walks in the door, the Chubby One will be packing his snacks ( we all know about his snacks) and out of the door.

Isn't it interesting that Mr. Whitlock was referred to John Pettigrew to correct his problem at the council meeting on Tuesday night when he brought forward his assessment irregularities.  Too bad when they had a room filled with hundreds of citizens a few months back Monroe Kneece and his band of brothers didn't take the hint that there are tax assessment problems in the whole county and "fix it" then!!!!

Should the rest of us bring our assessments to the March meeting? No, I guess that's why we have to go before the appeals board in March, and possibly to the state after that.

I attended the meeting Tuesday and didn't understand something.  My friend and I heard a request for a vehicle for someone.  We thought we heard them approve the request, and Monroe kneece stated that it wouldn't cost the county anything.  Was it our imagination?  Did you hear the same?

Also, is there an aluminum recycling center in the vicinity of Edgefield?  That might be a business worth looking into.

Editor's note: Yes, I did hear the same thing. I will have to go back and review the recording of the meeting EdgefieldDaily.com makes of all public meetings to get the details.

Editor's post: EdgefieldDaily.com has uncovered a problem. Last month County Administrator Pettigrew said the Assessor had over 400 appeals to handle. This month he said the same thing. What? How could that be? Furthermore, I asked Administrator Pettigrew about former Assessor Mike Reed being contracted to the Assessor's Office (it seems Assessor Keisha Bryant always has to have a $30 an hour assistant). He said it was to help with the appeals. Well, if that is true then why are there still 400 to be handled? Uncovered today is solid evidence Mr. Reed is re-reassessing Mount Vintage. My question is, when is the county going to re-reassess the rest of the faulty assessments across the county? Or is this a special privilege just for a certain developer's unhappy residents? If those are wrong, wouldn't it be fair to say the rest of those done by unqualified people are just as wrong? It is always cheaper to do it right the first time.

In reference to blue Nission and the private parking - this has been going on for quite some time.  It has been reported to the Mayor and he said he would take care of it.  So far nothing as been done.  This same car is seen in a handicapped spot but don't believe the person is handicapped.

Editor's note: I have seen the cone beside the car but not in the parking place saving the spot. I'm not a lawyer or a policeman but I would consider anything placed on the public roadway littering. Some claim the owner is forcing people parking in the next space of having to crowd the car next to them in order to avoid the cone. I guess if it is allowed to continue everyone should pick up a cone and take it with you when you park downtown Edgefield and place it next to your car. Better still, if it is good for one side it should be better on both sides. Great idea, now I don't have to worry about dings in my doors anymore. Of course, if everyone does it the limited parking available downtown Edgefield will shrink even more with all the private cones. I am going to a discount store to get my cones this weekend.

I find it funny that you are always attacking Fox Creek High School for being an all-white unaccredited high school that doesn't belong to Edgefield County.  First, the school is not all white. But of course you would have to set foot on the campus to find out.  Second, they do belong to ECBOE.  Since, it's a charter school they operate under different laws while still belonging to the district.

I would also like it noted that as an editor, you do not do your job well.  You frequently have spelling errors in your "editor's notes" and as a journalist you should prevent both sides of a story.  Yellow journalism anyone?

Editor's note: Wow, where to start? FCHS is not a part of the Edgefield County School District. The District does hold the charter, but has no control over the school. They operate as an independent 501(3)c NPO. Less than 1% black/white ratio is, for basic terms, all white in a county school district that is 67% black. Teachers do not count in the ratio, even though the school tries to use that. While I am at it, how's that new building coming along? What happened to that Federal loan? I have a lot of news I could publish about the school if I wanted to "attack".

As to spelling errors in my Editor's notes, yes, sometimes some things get by me. The Wandering Minds section is the last thing I work on after my 14-18 hour day gathering the news and publishing the web site. Often times it is between 1 and 3 am. Editor's note: I have no idea if that is true. Ask yourself, if you were a big business would you come to Edgefielod County with the people we have as elected officials? I will say that Administrator John Pettigrew, who is a politician not an administrator, will be perfect at selling the county. A politician loves to spin things. When the clerk notified the Richmond County Sheriff's Office the white male "became nervous" and left, leaving behind personal items in the hotel room a Richmond County Sheriff's Office incident report indicates. The man left in a Mercedes Benz that was traced back to Edgefield County. The only problem in the Tax Assessor's office is the fact that the tax assessor was handpicked and groomed by (former County Administrator) Wayne Adams. She has the job because she did whatever, whenever Wayne Adams directed her to do, right, wrong, or immaterial. Unfortunately for (the County) Council, they are neck deep in the whole scam and can't get rid of her without repercussions for themselves.

Fox Creek High School is open to all Edgefield Co students.  If minorities CHOOSE not to attend that is their CHOICE.  I'm sick of hearing about this.  You cant make anyone go to this school if they don't want to.  ST is 67% minority  but you are not after them to recruit non minorities to make them  equal. Why?  How many minorities do you have working for you?  If only non minorities wanted to work for you then  what could you do?  Would you shut down you paper? No of course not.  If FC was refusing to admit minorities then I would be the first to complain.
Maybe  reason that minorities don't come to FC is....
1.    Would rather attend with more minorities at ST
2.     For some,  they live at other end of Edgefield and think it is to far to come with out buses or will use too much gas
3.    Just maybe they don't want to.  This is America . Its their right and their CHOICE

You moved your child to ST. Despite your complaints against FC it was still your choice to move him.  I think all parents and students should have the same choice and not have it made for them by race.

Editor's note: Merriwether Elementary and Middle school do not have the same race problem. They are located just a few miles away. Why is that? Thank you for proving what most say about Fox Creek.

How many minorities are there at FCHS, since I don't have any children there, I don't have the time to walk the halls and visit the classrooms to see for myself? I pay taxes and I do not wish to support a school
that does not follow the rules. Why don't they make FCHS a private school and then they won't have to worry about what people think or say? Well, if they did the right thing(s) they would not have to worry about
anything. FCHS could be so much more than what it is. And as for the flyer, I saw that it was still on the school web site. At this point, I don't think FCHS should advertise anything on the school web site if
they are not a part of  the school system. They have their own board and their own rules, so advertise on your own web site.

Everyone says we're an all white school; I go there five days a week and that's a lie. You complain that Dr. Murph doesn't want press at the school... it's a school, not the Super Bowl. If you have no children attending FC and don't want to be part of it, why can't you just leave us alone? Why do you want us to shut down? How is FC affecting your life? You know nothing about the students there. You didn't know that one senior has a full ride to PC and that almost all of my senior class has been accepted to MULTIPLE universities. Too bad you

I'm just asking you to take a few minutes to realize that it's not just the adults involved with FC that you're messing with, but students who love FC and don't know what they would do without it.

Editor's note: I am glad you are proud of your school. However, it is a Public School and must follow the law with full disclosure. For seniors to be accepted to universities is a great stride being that FCHS is not an accredited school. News does not follow your mother's advice of "if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything". News covers what actually takes place regardless of who it catches in its net. Congratulations for your recent achievements.

To the people who may have negative feelings about First Baptist church in Edgefield;I had the opportunity to meet with a ggod number of members, and children as well during their youth bazaar around Christmas time. I donated 4 cakes to the church for the children to raise money that day. Yet, that was not the end. When I showed up, I was received with open arms. You knew that you were in a spiritual place and a place of acceptance. Their gratitude was obvious. Their attitude was just as you would expect, coming into any church. I even received a thank you card on behalf on the church and it's youth some weeks later. Simply receiving that card showed me how much they respected me and what I had done for them and the community. It may not have been much ,but they made me feel like I had given buckets of gold. I know of many other places I have donated to and the respons e wasn't even a card. I hold on to that card and just as they have done, I use it as an example for my children  to give to others and help one another. Simply show gratitude.n Stop whining and complaining. Don't judge that which you do not know!  I want to to take time to say ," Thank you to the First Baptist Church of Edgefield,SC for showing me that I was appreciated and letting me know that I aslo set an example for you youth as you have for mine!"

From your article on Feb 1:  "...Dr. Keesley said the district would never support, much less sponsor, any event when alcohol is provided or advertised. The event was being advertised on the district web site, “But it is coming off (the web site) today” Dr. Keesley said..."

I checked the ECSD website this morning and the FCHS Valentine Fundraiser is still being advertised.  Give her credit though, the flyer has apparently been sanitized - no mention of a cash bar.  I guess that then makes it okay for ECSD to support the event.

Editor's note: You never know who will drop by to see if FCHS is selling booze at the event.

To  the person that thinks everyone hates the police you are so far from the truth. You must hate yourself to make such a strong statement to the people that pays you that small salary as you say.You chose that line of work and if you don't like the territory then quit.Your heart can't be into it because if it was you would find time to work out.If I am not incorrect your so called leader requires you to take a p.t. test prior to employment and it must continue during the training in columbia. So don't cover up for you and your sheriff.I guess you are a member of that good ole boy system that was mentioned.I hope you are not one those guys that drive at high speeds to get to ribeyes or the huddle house endangering the citzens lives as well as yours. The taxpayers see what you guys do so just remember you don't know who is watching you or the sheriff when you do the things you do.Since you are so understaff maybe some of the people in the front office need to come out and do some work such as the sheriff and stop profiling everyday on the phone wasting taxpayers money. So be grateful you could be employed by a lower paying agency. I BET you take time to pratice with your firearm but you are to lazy to walk so take your family with you whenever decide you walk.

Editor's note: I can say that I know every single law enforcement officer in the county, including those in the towns, and not a one of them do their job because of the money. They do it as a service to their community. I have nothing but the utmost respect for all of them.

I make it a  point to go throughout our community donating cakes to different organizations and fundraisers to help the children who are trying to do something positive.
I have taken special consideration into donating cakes specifically to our sickly children such as Charlie this year in order just to put a smile on their face or help their families raise money. I would just like, if it is at all possible, for you to post something to reach the people and let them know that they will also be having a bake sale. I spoke with Liz , his aunt, this morning and am donating cakes to this cause. I would like to challenge all of the recipients of my donations in one way or another to come out and support this cause. Whether it is buying baked goods or fish dinners. They really need the support of the community. Again, if takes a village to raise a child, then let's do it. He's everyone's child. I am not sure how to go about it so I really would appreciate your assistance on promoting this. Letting them know that they have been blessed so let's share those blessings with him. Also, if you know of any other critically ill child or family who's trying to raise money by having any type of bake sale, please let me know. My goal is to put a  smile on a child's face. Even if it is making them their dream birthday cake. I know what the burden of having a sick child is like because my son had a stroke at the brain at the age of 5. I see this as some way of helping those who suffer. If you have any suggestions or know of anyone or anything else I can do ,please let me know by e-mailing me at chemikia@yahoo.com or (803) 275-0127.

Everyone hates the police. The fat ones and the skinny ones until you are a victim of a crime. they cannot get to you fast enough to assist at what ever problem you are having. The ideal situation wold be that the county admin office would see that the sheriffs office is under staffed. The sheriff can and does ask his employees to try to stay healthy. based on the American disability aand equal employment acts he cannot demand his employees meet any weight requiments for the job.Just as he cannot demand that they be short, tall, white, or black. As you complain about the sheriffs office think about whether you should be fired for the way you look. Being a police officer is a physical and a MENTAL job. After long hours for very little pay who has time to work out every day and spend time with their familys. Emergency services are not for everyone , but those who do it love what they do to assist the citizens of their community. The employees of edgefield county sheriffs office take pride in their work and in their sheriff. The fat cops and the skinny cops.

Let me start by saying that I do not have a child attending FCHS nor do I agree that the BOD at FCHS should have included an announcement about a cash bar at their school sponsored function.

That said, as a regular reader of the edgefield daily website, I have noticed a tendency on this website toward printing negative news about the FCHS with very little positive reporting. I investigated the performance of both FCHS and STHS and found that FCHS has outperformed STHS in nearly every area, including violent crime. Where are the reports reflecting those acheivements.

I also noticed that the North Augusta Star has a regular colunm regarding the happenings at FCHS. Why don't you? Do you have a child enrolled in FCHS? Do you have first hand knowledge of the schools acheivements? Are there cash bars available at any Edgefield County BOE functions (I heard that some of the past Christmas parties included these but I, of course am not a journalist)? You stock answer of "I only report what they send me" will not work here. When you have a "journalistic" website, it sometimes requires that you act as a journalist and actually "INVESTIGATE" a story.

Editor's note: I had a child at Fox Creek until we removed him due to falsified attendance records and other violations (reported to ECBOE) were confirmed. Nothing was done about it of course. FCHS BOE has ignored Freedom of Information requests even though reprimanded by the EC District Office for doing so, FCHS BOE members have told EdgefieldDaily.com and other local and area media what they vote on and other public business was "none of your business" by sitting board members, they have allowed drug users caught with drugs back on campus against district policy, ignored other policies, failed to report crimes, and refused media on their property. The only things they wish released is what they release, which is nothing but BS. The reason you see the "negitive" reporting is I do "investigate" my reports to bring you what they do not want you to know about. The things they try to hide and I expose.

In a further note, I founded the Merriwether Community Development Association that brought Fox Creek into existence. I think I speak on a bit more authority than 99% of others. I know the truth. That is why "they" hate me.

As far as the wonderful students FCHS has, they (with only a few high school students, all white mind you) brought the entire Edgefield County School District [67% black] down in SAT scores. That is a huge statement to the "education" they are providing in an unaccredited school. That blame lies not with the students, but with the administrators, school board, and teachers. Ignore facts if you will. I prefer to deal in reality. The same people have done an equally fine job when it comes to the finances of the school. I have the official audits to prove it. Can you, with facts, refute any report on EdgefieldDaily.com?

Per capita of enrolled studets, FCHS leads in all crimes reported (worse is those not reproted).

You have an opinion, I have facts. There is a huge difference.

Tokyo Rose was the name given to Iva Toguri, an American Japanese born in Los Angeles. Unable to get back to the US when World War II started, she lived and worked in Tokyo, where she eventually started broadcasting propaganda programs to the Allied troops fighting the Japanese in the Pacific Theater. She was convicted of treason against the US and served over 6 years in a US federal prison.

During the war the Japanese tried to demoralize the American forces.  Psychological warfare experts developed a message they felt would work. They gave the script to "Tokyo Rose" and every day she would broadcast this same message packaged in different ways, hoping it would have a negative impact on American GI's morale.

What was that demoralizing message?  It had three main points:
1.  Your President is lying to you.
2.  This war is illegal.
3.  You cannot win the war.
Does this sound familiar?

I would like to just commend Dr. Roberson for all of his efforts in orchestrating the Education Summit held at JET last weekend.  For those who missed the meeting, you missed a very rewarding presentation and motivation to continue to bring Edgefield County Schools to a level of excellence that we all dream of.  It is so true that the most precious asset that we all have are our children...they are our future and their success will be based upon a good, solid education.  For some, it will be a four year university, others a technical school and others may have talents and jump right into the job market.  Whatever the path chosen, it is critical that they have the common factor of an education that will take them to their goals.  South Carolina already stands way below what we would like in the rankings of educational standings.  As a resident and parent of Edgefield County, I would like to see our District move up in its rankings across the board on our report card.   It is a dream that is within our reach of becoming a reality.  The crowd present at the meeting is a good showing of our community's desires for Edgefield County Schools.  Thank you, Dr. Roberson, for bringing new light and enthusiasm to our District.  Keep up the Faith and Good Work!!

This estimate only includes property "on the tax books" as of December of 2005 and property bought or homes built in 2006 will not be taxed until 2007 Administrator Pettigrew said. While I am honored that some would say that they like me and First Baptist (Church of Edgefield), I want to be sure to point everyone in the proper direction. If there is anything good, or great happening here at EFBC it is because of what God is doing through His Holy Spirit and nothing that I or anyone in this congregation is doing. There are many good things happening here, but good things are also happening in many of the other churches in the area. I strongly encourage anyone who believes they are in a "dead church" to pray fervently about what God would have them do in their own church to help "revive" it before they just move membership somewhere else. It may be that God wants to use you to facilitate change in your own setting whereby blessing others.
If, however, you feel God pulling you out of a situation, you must commit that to prayer also. I encourage anyone looking for a first church home or a new one to not go by all the talk around town. Experience those churches for yourself, and most of all pray that God will lead you to the place that He would have you go.
I believe that I can speak for most of the ministers in our area in saying that if anyone ever has any questions about our respective churches please do not hesitate to call. We would be happy to talk with you, pray with you, and answer any questions that you might have.
Mr. Editor, thank you for this forum. God bless you.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, o r birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

However, even when they find such, they generally just make the person clean it up rather than prosecute.

The link below is to a flyer on the Fox Creek website advertising their Valentine Dinner and Dance with a cash bar:  http://www.foxcreekhs.org/pdf/FCHS_raffle_flyer_16Feb07.pdf  I believe there is a time and place for everything, but a bar at a school sponsored event is completely inappropriate.  I realize the folks at Fox Creek like to play by their own rules, but what sort of example do they think this sets for their kids.  I think it’s great they want to raise money (especially if that means they’re going to start paying off the debt they have incurred) but they shouldn’t have to sell alcohol to entice people to donate.  This dinner, dance and raffle is to benefit the students and somewhere in the planning of it I think they forgot that fact.

Editor's note: If they will let a student caught with drugs back in school before the week is out, why not bring on the booze? At least they are consistent. I'm glad to see something finally being done in Johnston about all the drug dealers. I have been complaining about this for a year and nobody seems to care.

Editor's note: Chief Aston is working diligently to curtail drug activity in the town. A series of drug arrests is currently taking place. The names of those arrested is not released so other dealers are not tipped as to who is in custody. At least three wanted individuals are being sought in connection to the raid held last Thursday. I should be able to release more by Monday.

Editor's note: It has nothing to do with drugs. To be honest I do not know where the ballons came from, but I have an idea. If you remember last year a man killed himself and his two sons in N. Augusta. I am told that his ex-wife remarried recently in the county and at the wedding they released a bunch of ballons in honor of the two boys. I assume (and we all know what that leads to) that the ballons were blue.

Editor's note: I do not dislike Mr. Bishop. I find him endlessly amusing due to his antics. Councilman Dorn is probably sad that Bishop isn't on the County Council anymore. He was the only one who made Dorn look intelligent. I remember when Bishop tried to sneak making his corner lot property in Merriwether the only available commercial site when he voted to pass zoning, preventing anyone else from owning commercial real estate in Merriwether. That came to an end when it was exposed at a public hearing. Bishop lost three consecutive elections for passing zoning in Merriwether.

Thank you for writing the letter in the Editor's column about the history of the Confederate Flag. That piece should be blown up to poster size and displayed anywhere in South Carolina where there is an empty spot. The truth will not change anything because people are too lazy to think for themselves anymore. We go right along with what is taught to our children in school because after all, can't they be trusted to teach our children the truth??????? The problem with our society is we are so gullible and lazy. We believe whatever we are told if it fits in with what  we want to believe. If it does not further our cause then we just make up things because after all, how many people are really going to research the true facts? That is what organizations like the Naacp count on. That is how we have allowed the Naacp to get a grip and to further their agenda. Historial facts do not change. If you really want a chill down your spine, research the Naacp.!!!!

What is the point of a homeowner association meeting if you cannot bring up your concerns, for fear of your privileges being revoked?

The whole James Brown thing has become a joke. Beginning with the family locking the woman out of the house as soon as he died without letting her get her things. I understand why the house had to be secured, but she should have been allowed, under supervision, to get her things. The funeral was distasteful with one of the daughters appearing in a very low cut blouse that was trashy and sluttish looking. Not appropriate for a funeral. Bury the poor man already and get on with your lives. At this point, any thing you do to gain money promoting his life and memory has been overshadowed by your actions. It is just embarrassing for Augusta and for Beech Island. Share the money. I think there is enough to go around.

To the "non-Southerner" who wrote in I say, that if you are truly a "non-Southerner, perhaps you should not be weighing in on a subject that you know nothing about. This issue is not entirely about the flag itself, but about pushing too hard from the minority groups. The original boycott was to force South Carolina to remove the flag from the Statehouse dome where it flew just under the SC flag. The agreement reached between both parties was to remove it from the dome, but place it on a flagpole on the Statehouse grounds as a type of memorial. The NAACP then decided after the fact that if they pushed some more they could ban it altogether. My guess is that they still would not be happy with it in a museum either, if it was on State property.
Also as for James Brown's estate, he did not specify the woman in his will, therefore she is entitled to nothing. If he did not think of her enough to add her, then why does she deserve anything? This kind of thing is what is wrong with our system. When the wishes of the dead can be challenged even though the paperwork is legal, then why do a will in the first place?

I was just wondering why (a) Rehab runs like a circus on the weekends. I visited on Sunday and the workers on (the) Wing were obviously having a party and disregarding the needs of the patients. No one was at the nursing station, and no one was walking the halls or checking on patient care. It is sad that people are placing their loved ones in the hands of this staff, and the staff obviously finds too much time to party and have fun while someone could be dying and no one was where they could have even heard a cry for help if it was given. Nursing homes need to be places of comfort and care and concern. Patients should be made to feel loved and cared for and not ignored for the sake of the worker’s need to party and talk. Perhaps the administrator and DON should consider making unannounced walk throughs to see what is going on. Or perhaps even better the state observers should come in on the weekends and see how this place really works.  It was so bad that the janitorial staff was apologizing for the way the workers were behaving. Changes need to be in place  quickly. .

Flying the Confederate Flag will always be an issue as long as you have people that benefit from keeping it an issue. The NAACP will continue to promote the controversy as long as it can milk it and stir things up. If it wasn't for them we would not have had to spend any money at all. All the effort that they are wasting on a flag issue could be put to much better use. How about spending some effort on teaching the male population to step up and take responsibility for children they create. Spend some effort in keeping the children in school. I could go on and on. We, as humans, look for excuses and people and things to blame for our own shortcomings. The NAACP should be about teaching that you are responsibe and accountable for what you do and what you become. It has nothing to do with a flag.

I for one am sick of it. I am a Rebel and I will always be a Rebel. If you don't like that, you are the one with the problem. You are right I have only lived in South Carolina for 15 years so I guess that makes me a non-southerner. And if you’re a good example I will never aspire to your heights. I know better than to think you represent the south, and know many good and kind people who are true Southerners. These people are above vulgarity and threats. Not one person cared enough to respond with a compelling and articulate argument in either keeping or removing the Confederate flag.

Other issues are more important, this should be a non issue.

My point is money is being wasted on something that should be a non issue. Soon after I moved here a rally was held at the state house, approximately $17000, 00 +/- was spent just on security alone, they were afraid of riots or some thing.  Guess what? Only a small crowd showed up on both sides. Our own local law enforcement could have put the money to better use.

Some other issues the money could have been budgeted for - education, health care, child care the list goes on and on. I bet every school in this state would love to have had that $17000.00. How many textile mills have closed in the last 15 years? That money could have gone to help reeducate those who have lost their jobs. South Carolina’s economy has changed which is why Aiken County is trying to bring in the retirees.

Why are all the people involved in James Browns' estate trying so hard to shut out a woman and child who he very often proclaimed, publicly, were his wife and child? Isn't South Carolina a common-law marriage state? It seems to be an organized campaign to see she doesn't receive a penny. They already turned his wake and tribute into a sideshow. Why don't all these other greedy relatives and people leave this woman alone and realize James Brown wouldn't have had her living with him if he hadn't wanted her there? The man had plenty of money to go around. Let's do the right thing and let this woman and child, who meant a lot to this man, have what it takes for them to live thier lives out like it would have been if he were still alive.

Dean Campbell worked for the betterment of the town of Johnston. Dean Campbell worked with the people of Johnston. Dean Campbell was smart enough to know it took everyone at the town hall, working together, to run this town. Dean Campbell was honest and forthcoming with the townspeople and press when anything concerning the town occured. I keep reading the comments about the extra money Edgefield educators received in their paychecks for the month of December. People, GET OVER IT. So what if these hard working, underpaid, dedicated  people got a "bonus" at Christmas?? ????  Don't MOST businesses offer their employees a bonus at Christmas? I just wonder how many of those posting could put up with the CRAP that teachers tolerate on a daily basis...probably not very many. I wish everyone could be in a teacher's shoes for just one day. I'm willing to bet their perception would change. For the record, I am not a teacher...I am a PARENT ,and I  have visited my child's classroom several times during his school years.  Teaching is one of the most admirable professions out there.  Personally, I appreciate everything teachers do for the children of Edgefield County. I certainly couldn't deal with all the junk each day.  It's a wonder you even have time to teach because you are so busy dealing with social, emotional, behavioral, and personal issues. You do not hear often enough how much you are appreciated. After talking to several teachers, that little bit of extra money they received in December was such a nice surprise. They had no idea it was coming. If you have a child in our school district, then you should be grateful that the district did something commendable for it's employees. In my opinion, we need to be doing all we can to keep good teachers in our district. After all, Aiken County pays a better salary and offers more/better  incentives for first year teachers. How can we compete with that?  So please....CHILL with the complaining about the educators in our county getting extra money at Christmas. Instead, thank a teacher.  Maybe Scrooge lives in Edgefield afterall...

I hope the Edgefield County Council reads the article at page 6B/Metro of today's Augusta Chronicle entitled "Housing projects cater to retirees."  The council's recent double dip of accepting the flawed reassessment and hiking the millage, not only up from the rollback millage required by statute, but beyond the CPI limit, points out that they are clueless when it comes to being stewards of the future of the county.  Residential growth will be the major part of any economic growth Edgefield County and the council has thrown a big bucket of cold water on that source of revenue.  I also hope that details concerning the assistance that is being provided for the Assessor will be made public.  If the reassessment is rescinded and redone this year under the newly adopted caps, the Council may just save the county from further economic harm.

Editor's note: Currently Mike Reed, formerly the E.C. Asessor now working for Aiken County, is "assisting" with appeals on a part time basis. A consultant, working part time last year made $46,888.46, almost as much as Assessor Kesha Bryant's $51,000 salary.

Even though I read Edgefield Daily almost everyday and see all of the burglaries I still though it wouldn't happen to me. You see I live in the middle of fifty acres of woods, our drive way is almost a mile long(with only one way in and one way out), and sixty acres of woods stand between our property and the closest paved road. There is at least a mile of nothing but wooded area an all sides of our property. We have three neighbors in this mile radius. In other words you do not get to my house by accident! Especially on foot! If all of this isn't enough I have ten dogs and at least that many guns. I have always felt safe and that no one would ever be stupid enough to come back here to burglarize or anything else for that matter. For this reason we very seldom have locked our doors when we are home, do not lock our cars or out buildings etc.. I'm sure many people in this community live in similar locations and have felt as safe as I have, for this reason and not to scare anyone I am writing to tell you my story. On Wednesday evening about 7:30pm (pitch black outside) I went out on my porch to smoke. While out there I heard voices, close voices. I then went in to get my gun and call my son(who lives on the same land) to come over and look. When he came over, sure enough someone took off running into the woods. I called the police and of course with all of the woods to cover they did not find anyone. But these people could be up to nothing but no good to be at my house, much less in the dark and cold. What is even scarier is the sheer boldness of them to be there while I was home. Because we have always felt so safe I feel completely violated although we were lucky enough to have been home and scared them off before they could do anything. For all of you in my situation I tell you this so you know there is no where safe anymore. Lock your doors, believe your dogs when you think they are barking at nothing, because it can happen to you!
I apologize if this is over the word limit. But I felt it was important to let everyone else who thinks it can't happen to them know that it can!

I myself do not have the talent to lead but I can certainly follow through if we can get something started. I would like to see the churches in this area get started with something. They already have people working with the young and also have the buildings to offer as meeting places. The religious community has so much to offer but many times they just offer it to the youth of their church. And don't anyone get upset! Pushing a particular religion would not be the agenda. It would be to have structured programs in safe atmospheres and good role models in place to carry out those programs. BUT not all kids are into sports some need other recreation to boost their moral & keep them out of trouble...We need funding for something like a YMCA, skate park (w/ all liability signed away, of course) a putt-putt course, 4-H that is publically accessible to teach kids/teens about the outdoors or helping your neighbor, instead of smashing in their windows because they have nothing better to do and are BORED! I would like to give my unbiased opinion on the Confederate Flag issue- I don’t have issues either way about the significance of the flag but other do and I respect that. The flag had its purpose in history, but its meaning has morphed into other ideas that are understandably hateful to some. Why are we wasting time and money on an issue that is over and done with? We need to spend the money on education and health care.

If something is so painful to others why would we keep it in a public place every one has the right to visit? Museums are where we keep and learn from history.  I am of German decent but do not fly a Swastika in my front yard. My ancestors fought in both the revolution and civil war, I fly an American flag.

We are supposed to learn from our mistakes and move on, not teach the next generation intimidation is ok.

The teens I see driving around with Confederate Flags are trying to intimidate others and are not honoring the past. I don’t see them keeping the graves of confederate soldiers immaculate. I wonder how many southerners who fly this flag could even pass a 9th grade history test on the civil war.

We are Americans that is the flag we should be promoting, especially with so many people going over to Iraq to fight for our freedom.

Editor's note: An "opinion" in not "unbiased". By nature one's opinion is the ultimate in bias. The color purple offends me. Shall I force the government and the population to ban it from public sight?

I have walked around the town walking paths, and it is ok, but I would rather walk on a track even if I did have to drive to it. As far as drud dealings because of it being secluded, just look around on some streets that ou may be walking on. Drugs can be dealt anywhere. The jaycees park is always empty, and after dark is also an ideal spot for drug dealing. You don't have to worry so much about dogs on a track like you do walkig around neighbor hoods.

I sure wish the $250 bonus that the teachers got covered all the out of pocket expenses that they incur throughout a school year.  It doesn't come anywhere close to what my wife spends on her class.  I wonder how many of the positions listed that didn't get the bonus have ever had to pay out of pocket to do their job better.  I often kid my wife about her summer's off and she tells me that I chose my job and she chose hers.  I think that is applicable in this situation as well.  If you don't like your job situation, go out and change it!

All a lawsuit will do is make the lawyers richer and keep the doors open for people to blame others for their decisions.
I hope the family find some peace despite the loss.

I am not from Mount Vintage but am wondering how the developer can revoke a property owner's priviledges?  Isn't that one of the "big draws"?  I assumed that the residents had an association and would vote on issues of this nature as well as other issues concerning that area since they are the ones paying for them.  What were the issues in the first place?  Why was this one resident singled out?

This developer may want to remember he still has more acreage with more development planned.  Negative publicity by his actions spreads more than all the "good" he supposedly does.  After all, didn't he import these intelligent people?

Editor's note: You should know when the new school is to be built, the Fox Creek School Board has announced, re-announced it over and over. They have a grant, they are seeking a grant, they have a loan, they are seeking a new loan, and on and on. The end of last school year, before the beginning of this school year, by Christmas, next year. You can only lie to the same people for so long. Not to mention fudging the numbers, which has the school in six figure debt with the district. I would not want to be one of the suckers that would hold any paper on the school unless I were seeking a huge tax loss for my taxes. They will try to force the county school district to assume the school. Too bad, that would take a referendum and the county residents would never accept the debt incurred by Bishop and company for their all white "click" unaccredited school. Could somebody at FCHS let Ute know the items she got from the STH Drama Dept. either needs to be paid for or returned? Just some friendly advice.

Editor's note: Magistrates are appointed by the Governor. Though the state is pushing for college requirements that is against the purpose of the Magistrate Court's founding, they are making progress on the issue. It is to be the "common man's court" with a "common man" (or woman) presiding. There are problems in our current Magistrate Court's operation that will be examined in the very near future. Some which is outside the Magistrates' control. I will have to check into their salaries on Tuesday.

I also agree that something needs to be done about the speeding around Merriwether Elementary School.
I travel this road everyday to and from work.  This is not a highway people----It's a school zone!

Editor's note: Merriwether has several roads that are inundated with speeders. Murrah, Spring Haven, Currytown, Briggs, and Woodlawn all share the same problem, and it is not isolated to teens. As the residential population continues to grow it will only be a matter of time before a child or pedestrian is struck by a vehicle. It is not a matter of "if", but rather when. I can tell you that is something the driver will never forget as long as they live.

Well, I guess the poor decision of the voters of Johnston to elect Willie Campbell Mayor over Dean Campbell is finally coming to light. What is this guy thinking?  Dean Campbell did a wonderful job for so many years and now we are just going backwards with Mayor Willie. This whole walking track at Watson Park business is just a joke. It makes absolutely no sense, is isolated and is not safe - especially for women wanting to walk out there. His plan just wastes money on a walking track that could be used at the Jaycee Park where there is so much potential for growth. I take my children there all the time and there is so much space where the old pool used to be that could be expanded and really made into a terrific family park.  There are sidewalks all over town that people walk on daily for exercise and I see no reason why that can't continue. I wish I knew what he was trying to prove and hope that the town council continues their fight against him and puts the  money to good use!

Looks like Johnston's mayor is putting the cart in front of the horse on this Watson Park walking track issue, he's proposed. Why waste these funds on something only a few would make use of when the Jaycee Park, which is used regularly, especially during the summer, is in need of improvements. All of the park equipment needs upgrading and more should be added. Restrooms should be a priority. More picnic tables, under covered awnings would be nice. The list of what could and should be done at this park is endless. I take my grandchild there regularly, in the warm months, and she loves it. And we never go there without others showing up and my granddaughter always has a playmate to have fun with. Put these funds there, where the whole town can benefit. And drop this other proposal, which appears to be a power play, on the mayor's part.

You are right on about the minimum wage increase. It affects the price of everything. What have we accomplished if we raise the minimum wage and then prices go up across the board to cover it?Common sense tells you that is what happens. That hurts even the person with the minimum wage job. He has not gained anything. Education is the what we should be persuing while we work those minimun wage jobs to help out us through school. Yes, I said work to help pay for school. WE should always look for the ulterior motive when anything is proposed to us by our representatives in government. There usually is one and it isn't to help the working man.

Should property owners/tax payers who own property on county dirt roads not expect for these roads to be maintained? If you cant drive on the road without getting stuck would the property value not go down? I can see not putting gravel on roads no one lives on, although other counties do, but the county had no problem putting  $25000 of crush and run on Johns Rd. when no one lives on about 2 miles of it-for the golf tournament, which failed, only to have it closed a couple of years later. I know this county very well and I think Howard Gibson is not very well imformed or is (mistaken) claiming to maintain 200 miles of dirt roads.   Who benefited the most from  this? The same person who owns a lot of property in town but rents to several government agencys and benefits greatly from having city taxes dropped-or transferred to the ones paying utility bills of which 5% goes back to the town ... that’s who.

She is excited about school and really likes her teachers.  In a world where teachers get a bad rap, I want to say "Thank you" to the teachers at MMS for the job that you do each and every day. My child is the most important person in the world to me, and I know that she is in perfect hands with you each day. For those parents who criticize, ridicule, and belittle teachers, imagine what it must be like to spend the day in the classroom with 25children.  Not only are these people respnsible for making them behave, but they are responsible for educating them and preparing them for state testing.  Personally, I thank you. There must have been two used, because I noticed Mr. Kneece’s property at 11 Aull Dr. appraised at $100,613.00 in ’05 with a tax bill of $847.28 and in ’06 the same property appraised at $103,828.00 with a tax bill of $819.27. I didn’t get the opportunity to protest my assessment this year, so next time, Mr. Tax man, could you use the same method you used for Mr. Kneece, to assess my property?

Editor's note: I want mine based on the numbers used for County Councilman Willie Bright or better still those used for Bill Hixon. While at a friends house on Monday I witnessed something so sad. She was taking down the Christmas tree and complaining about the huge amount of stuff her 3 year old child received for Christmas. She wasn't complaining about the fact that most of it is useless and not needed, but that she now has to find a place for him to put it in a room that already looks like a toy store. How sad that we have degraded Christmas this way. I began to wonder about the dollar amount of all this junk. If the Aunts, grandparents and parents had taken the money instead and put it in a saving account for this child, it could be used later for something like education. I told her about how our family stopped this stupid selfish act at Christmas. Two years ago my son-in-law lost his job. They were having a hard time and of course Christmas just made it seem that much worse. I had been stewing about Christmas for a while so I just threw my idea out there thinking that it would be shot down and all would think I had lost my mind. What if we made a deal not to exchange presents at all. We could get together and everyone contribute something to a meal and just celebrate the season. After all Santa would come and bring gifts so why add more to the clutter.( this needs to be cut down too)To my surprise my entire family jumped in with relief. I did not have a single person that fought it. But I had many suggestions of things we could do. One was to go to the Singing Christmas Tree in Aiken. We have done that every year since and I can not tell you how mush more enjoyable and meaningful Christmas has been. This year was my daughter's turn to host the dinner at her home. We all brought our family picture albums and looked through old pictures and told stories of where this was taken and so forth. Even my three year old Grandson got excited when we took pictures out of him at the beach when he was a baby told stories about him. It was just the best Christmas I think I have ever had.Is I sit here now I can not recall any one Christmas gift that anyone that has ever given me.They have gone by the wayside as material things do.  But the gift of spending Christmas the way we did, will keep me warm until the next one. It only takes one person in the family to speak up. Think about it. Bring it up right now  while everyone stills sees how dumb we act at Christmas and once you have decided to do it, keep the idea alive by talking about it through out the year. Remember how stressed out you were running around trying to buy for people, then think of how nice it would have been if you could have concentrated on the real reason for the season. Let's bring Jesus back into the celebration.

Innlooking  over  some  documents  for  property  taxes  in  the  county  i  am  curious  as  to  why  some  well  known  family  names (deleted)  they  are  only  paying  pennies  on  the  dollar    in  taxes. This  is  just  another  example  of  unfair  taxation  for  some.

Editor's note: You must be new to the area. Welcome to Edgefield County.

I wish you would get a life.

Editor's note: No thanks, the one I have is complicated enough without obtaining another one.

I want to let people know (Johnston Police) Chief Aston helped us with a problem we were having and he got right on it and we haven't had a problem since. I thought he was too young for the job when he got it but he is doing a good job. Thank you.

Editor's note: Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston is an experienced investigator formerly with the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office. He will be an asset to the town.

I think the "here's your card" should be given to the jailbird that caused the deputy to wreck the police car along with a bill for the repairs to the car. Put him to work on the side of the road with a "Here's your card " sign for him to wear while he is out there!

looks like to me its not the "chickens" who needed the luck saturday....maybe it was the little "kittens"  who needed the luck.....oh well, carolina won---clemson didnt!!!! simple as that!!!

Your leaves hit my car when you were blowing them into the street!!!  Now that's a frowny face!

First, let me wish you & your family a Happy New Year and I appreciate all your hard work. Second, how about those Roosters? If only Georgia, along with Clemson had lost, it would have been a perfect week-end. I hate to say it, but I can't pull for those Tigers or Dogs. I have had to put with too much of the fans over the years. It's been tough being a Gamecock for the past few years, but I think USC has made "a turn" for the better. Question: over the past several days, everytime I pull up "Wandering Minds", it comes up as "page
cannot be found". Am I doing something wrong or is it hidden behind an another format? Any response will be appreciated.

Editor's note: Due to the number of comments the Wandering Minds receives it is archived quarterly. Due to the enormous content the page often will time out before loading on a dial-up connection and show that the page is not found. Wandering Minds has been archived (listed above) from Sept '06 through Dec. '06. This should alleviate the problem.

You should give a here's your card to the deputy that hit the tree.

Editor's note: I am thinking of a proper award. I have thought about small white magnetic emblems such as a car, a deer head, and of course a tree that can be placed on the front quarter panel of the patrol cars. Sort of like the pilots used to use on the sides of their planes. I have a feeling Sheriff Dobey would not allow them, but it would be funny.

I have only 1 resolution this year. Not to get any more speeding tickets. This year I will be able to keep my resolution. They suspended my driver's license.

My resolution is to not make fun of Andy's pants, nor make fun of all the yahoo's in the county with or without teeth, and to always check Edgefield.com each and everyday for the REAL news of the area. And to be nicer to my best friend "The Creep"

I thought it was nice of you to mention the people who work over the holidays but you left out Doctors and Nurses at the hospital.

Editor's note: Thank you for pointing them out.
