To the jerk that caused the angst for all the children (yesterday) you will get caught. In this small town secrets are never kept long.

The Principal, teacher and staff did a great job putting the emergency plan into action and maintaining a calm atmosphere. And my thanks to all the law enforcement, fire department and others who helped.

And thanks to (EdgefieldDaily.com) for answering my call when (I) needed to (k)now what was going on.

Editor's note: A report was online within 15 minutes of the situation. EdgefieldDaily.com led all radio, television, and print media with the most current information available at the time of the event.

The situation at Parker this morning was a terrible "happening" for our children and our small community.  I would like to thank the Edgefield Police and Fire Department!  They were at our school in record time, were well organized, and very helpful! I would also like to thank Mrs. Murrell and Mrs. Holmes, as well as our other district staff, for their dedication to our school and community.  Our day was emotionally draining, but order and control were top priorities for everyone involved with the situation.  A special thanks also for our supportive
parents!  They were patient and kind even when faced with unanswered questions!  I am a "Proud Member of W.E. Parker"!

I see where our state school superintendent Jim Rex will be in Aiken at South Aiken HS  looking for input on how to improve schools in SC. Apparently he did not see the article in The State newspaper this week about Dillion schools playing 30 yr old instruments.due to lack of funding. Studies have proven that students who receive music education perform better on standardized tests. It is not suprising that the number one public hs is a performing arts school, just look at Davidson across the river for proof of what music and arts education can do for students regardlesss of income level. It is time to speak out for music deducation not more standardized tests.

Just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the school faculty, police, fire and all other emergency personnel that ensured that all our children got out of the school and to safety fast.

Also to you at Edgefield Daily you are a blesing to all of us in Edgefield. Keep doing what you do to keep us informed.

Now to the idiotic person or persons who are trying to destroy our Children and community --- " crawl back under whatever rock you came from and stay away from us and our children.......
Thanks again to all who cared and did what needed to be done regardless of what some people will have to say about the inconvience of a terrible situation.

At least i know as well as some of my family and friends that their Children are safe due to the quick action of all......

Re: Editor's post: I have a little pet peeve of sorts that I heard spoken on the news tonight by the Police Chief of Wrens. He was talking about grant money the department received to purchase radar guns and other items and said the purchases were "at no cost to the taxpayer". Now, where do grants come from? State and Federal governments. Where does the government get its money? From the taxpayer. So... how is a grant that is received not a cost to the taxpayer?

Maybe from confiscated property from drug dealers???  I dunno.  Just a guess.

I don't think we should have a stimulas package. The loan companies and the banks should have to bring down the interest rates to a fair rate. They loaned people money on homes that the people clearly were above their means to pay for. People bought homes knowing it was going to be stretch each month. Why should my tax dollars go to bailing out stupidy. My family lives in a small home that we are able to pay for. Sure, it would be nice to live in a trophy home but we are smarter than that. Live within your means people and stop trying to show off by a bigger home and new cars that you can't afford. I can't afford it so why should I pay for you to have it?

The so called "stimulus package" is a joke. The US is borrowing the money for this from China so we can go spend more money on goods made in China. Exactly how is that suppose to help the US economy?

I have a little pet peeve of sorts that I heard spoken on the news tonight by the Police Chief of Wrens. State and Federal governments. Where does the government get its money? From the taxpayer. So... how is a grant that is received not a cost to the taxpayer?

I have that same problem with the "stimulus package" the US Congress is working on that will "give" families anywhere between a few hundred to over a thousand dollars. Again, the money belongs to the taxpayers and returning something that is already yours is not "giving" you something. Those who do not pay taxes are the ones who are getting a gift - your money.

Rather than returning some of our money to stimulate the economy for a short period, why not just lower taxes (or adopt the Fair Tax) and let people keep more of their money to "stimulate the economy" all year long?

Dear Mr. Editor, I wish you would stop letting people bring up race here (Wandering Minds). There are a lot of great comments made and issues that need to be discussed but race is not one of them. It just incites people and no progress is made when that happens. Please consider that in the future. I enjoy the Wandering minds and EdgefieldDaily(.com) and thank you for your hard work.

Editor's note: Thank you for reading and please tell others about our location. Race is a very volatile subject and I refuse to publish inflammatory comments from readers. However, if someone has an opinion they wish to express and it follows the rules, I will post the comment. I think bringing issues like race out into the open helps to remove the "us against them" mentality by exposing the futility of that type of argument. I do not see race, I respect everyone as an individual. Topics come and go in the Wandering Minds, next week it will be something else.

I would like to support the editor for his note to the posting about blacks doing robberies, wearing or half-wearing bizarre clothing and playing mumbo-jumbo on the radio.
As usual the editor was right on the mark, and I can offer my support in his posting.
Last spring I was outside my yard raking up leaves on the sidewalk when a raggedy car drove up and stopped for the red light.
The car was vibrating from the sound of loud rap music coming from its radio. All the windows were down and inside sat four white teen-agers, all male, all mouth breathers and all with baseball caps turned backwards or sideways on their heads.
I looked at them and just shook my head. I have two sons, one an executive with a major drug company and the other an officer with a major security company. When they were small boys I told them many times that you are judged by the clothes you wear, the things that attract you, the way you present yourself to others. My lessons, thank God, took.
I can imagine those four I saw that day were at the bottom of the economic and social ladder, put there by their parents and their own chosen lifestyles. These are the parasites that depend on their support from hard working, well mannered, caring people.
These four are the kind that the Democrats want us to support with cradle to the grave assistance. These four are the kind that make me an ardent supporter of abortion.
At the moment it appears that the blacks are leading in repugnant lifestyles and social behavior, but let us not forget we have a lot of white teen-agers who are gaining on them.

RE : Black people are leading the CSRA!!!!!
Please get this straight for me. When white people are leaders, and have a good positon, why the blacks can't have it too? Why is everything got to be about black and white ? Loud music, white people play it too. Cars with shiny rims and different colors, whites have that too. Baggy pants, guess again. There is good and bad in all race of people. It is up to the individual to make the right choice. But it seems like to me you was hurt by a black person or you are in love with a black person. Now I know you knew the  famous senator who  fathered a black daughter, by a black woman . He had a choice, and he made a choice that he had to live with , until the end of his days. Now wasn't the senator white and the woman black ?  Pray and you will get over issues like this.

I understand, from hearing resent news quotes, that you; Gov. Mark Sanford; are pushing the major issue of greatly cutting State spending.

I whole-heartedly agree with cutting WASTEFUL AND VERY UN-FAIR spending of S.C. Tax-payer spending !!

In order to help make sure these spending cuts are performed in the correct and FAIR places, i am strongly suggesting that this on-going, very wasteful, and very un-fair practice of allowing S.C. state employees ""to personally use state vehicals and fuel"" be stopped immediately !!

I, as a private citizen of South Carolina, do not get to ""freely"" use someone elses' vehical and fuel, and i most certainly believe that it is well past time to stop, i repeat; to stop this very wasteful, and very un-fair practice of allowing state employees to personally use S.C. state vehicals and fuel !!!!!!

How about being the leader that The State of South Carolina and its citizens need, "and stop this very wasteful and very un-fair personal use of state vehicals and fuel !!"

If Hillary Clinton and John Edwards really believe all the things they have said over the years; supporting affirmative action, "fairness", and wanting change, they should drop out of the race and let Barack Obama have the nomination. After all he is a half black, half white man named for Muslims, is anti-war, and believes in cradle to grave control of every aspect of your life. Sounds like the perfect Democrat candidate to me. Come on Hillary and John, quit holding "the black man down". The again, Democrats were opposed freeing the slaves, supported Jim Crow Laws, opposed Civil Rights, opposed the first black named to the Supreme Court, and yet they get roughly 92% of the black vote. Go figure...

I read where you said Fox Creek (Charter High School) was almost $1,000,000 in debt. Who gets stuck with that if the school has to close? Us? The taxpayers?

Editor's note: The amount of money owed on two mortgages on the property on Stevens Road is right at $750,000. If they default on the loan look to the Fox Creek School Board members: Sherolyn Bishop (Chairman), Ashley Williams (Treasurer), Rod Huffman, Terri Mayson (Secretary), Jim Oliver (Vice-Chairman), Vernon Ball, Steve Elliot, and Sharon Reese. A very astute reader would make the connections of several of these individuals. The Edgefield County taxpayer cannot be held responsible for debts the FCCHS board incurs.

It is no wonder this county remains where it is economically. If County Council's  personal funds were being spent, many would make better choices.  The consideration being given ( I use this term lightly) regarding the insurance funds for the Church Street property is appalling at best.  The purchase price for the Callihan building, the cost of renovations and the parking situation is enough to give intelligent people pause.    It is no wonder people of the county are looking forward to new leadership.

Good stewards show the people what the real needs are, are prudent in spending funds and benefits the whole county rather than select areas or special interests. This council functions as if the taxpayer is the enemy. Until the good ole boy system changes, you can kiss goodbye any chances for real economic, quality of life and educational development.  This council is afraid to break the chains to make real and lasting choices for all its citizens.

I was eating breakfast and reading about this ladys misfortune of renting property from Mr. Bright.  I was appalled at the fact that he would rent substandard housing and expect full payment.  Then to turn the heat off because because full payment wasn't rendered was bottom of the barrel.  I mentioned this artical to (someone).  He was also upset with Councilman Bright's decision.  In response, (the person) immediately collected $30.00 from other displeased county residents and placed it into an envelope to be delivered to Mayor Ken Duram for this debt.  He stated that if this debt was already paid that it will go towards her next payment.
Thank you for your ear and your service to Edgefield County.

Editor's note: Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham serves for the Town of Edgefield, not the county. County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece might be the one you are speaking of delivering the money to Mr. Bright. Although the bill has been paid, as I understand it, and the lights are now in the woman's name.

Seems to me Mr. Bright knows how to "buck" the system! Paying 500+ dollars a month on an AGED mobile home is ridiculous. Sounds to me, he's got plenty of money in his pocket at someone else expense.
He should be ashamed of quibbling over 30 dollars and instead count his blessings. Or take some of the money he gets and obtain an education and learn to speak proper English. But you know what they say the "greedy just get greedier".

Willie Bright doesn’t have as good of a deal as Salley Cooks. Mrs. Cooks added on to their home and have only had to pay $80 a year for the past  4 years. The property you mentioned on simpkins road  "you lives here " has  2 houses on it , one with homestead exemption the other with very low tax for some unknown reason - it has a nice new green tin roof on it and is lived in by a different family. My parents have second home less than 5 miles from this and their taxes are 3 to 4 times what this homes taxes are  and it is not in as good of condition as this second home on simpkins rd. There is a relatively new mobile home on sweetwater rd.  almost across the street from the golf course,  that is lived in an is not taxed at all - the owner told the tax  people it was just for storage. I guess all you have to be is a good (fibber) and you can get many tax breaks.

Editor's post: I wonder if the parents of the Fox Creek Charter High School know their school board has put them roughly $750,000 in debt (above and beyond all other debts) with $475,000 of that due for payoff in just eight months? Look for more on this on Monday.

On a Here's Your Card note: Somebody actually called the Sheriff's Office at 12:30 am Saturday to have a deputy come get a cat out from under their bed so they could go to sleep. I just have to ask... just how lazy do you have to be to call the police to get the cat out from under your bed? I am going to take a stab at this and say it is the same type of person that thinks government should pay for your health care, housing, food, and utilities.

I looked up the tax records for Willie "cheep" Bright. He must have all the right connections with the Section 8 government people. I have twice the living space, 5 acres and my mortgage is not $575 a month.

Newest mobile home is 1999 valued at $9,337.00
1986 valued at $3531.00 this was the only one I could find located at 50 BETTIS ACADEMY EXT
The rest are located in Trenton
1988 valued $3381.00
1979 valued $2457.00
1976 valued $2557.00
1973 valued $2527.00
1969 valued $2451.00
You would think they have an age limit on renting mobile homes as section 8. I wonder what he has under other names.

Editor's note: I would like to know how Councilman Bright received a refund in 2007 after paying his property taxes and filed no appeal. It must be nice to be "connected".

I couldn't agree more with the poster about working black citizens. There are many of us that hold down jobs and are not looking for a handout. I work a full time job and so do my husband. We have two college educated children who are also gainfully employed and a middle schooler. We have taught them the value of hard work and not to sit around with their hands out. We have not asked for assistance even when we didn't know how we were going to make ends meet.(We prayed then and continue to pray. All I ask of people is that you don't judge all of us by the school board members, county councilmen, or the newly formed Johnston African group. There are plenty of us that these select groups don't represent, nor do we want them to, or speak for (us).

This is regarding the poster that is upset with the politicians coming to the church to stump for votes.  The responding poster made a good point, but I too have a problem with the candidates coming into the churches to ask for votes or to make 'appearances' at certain holidays in churches that eventually lead to 'When I'm elected......' speeches.  While it is more the ACLU stomping on our Chrisian Civil Liberties, it is still the politicians that bow down to them while begging the Christian voters to vote for them.  I would like to know that if my child wanted to give Valentine's Cards to his/her friends at school that had a Bible verse on them, (which is my understanding is not allowed) would the ACLU jump on it and defend my American Civil Liberty like they for the muslims, athiests, etc when a football player or coach or an entire team wants to pray openly before a game.

I watched a television talk show recently and a guest was Paula Deen, one of the nation's best known cooking gurus. Ms. Paula said there is great hunger in America and many working people are having to sacrifice buying groceries in order to pay other bills. That is nonsense in itself, based on the number of fat folks, black and white, I have seen cruising the aisles at local stores. All this lard I see puts to rest one of the Democrats' and black folks' favorite complaints, which is the highly suspicious complaints about the 40 to 50 million who go to bed hungry every night. If that was the case the streets would be littered with the carcasses of starving millions. If this land of plenty is so hard put to feed the starving masses, then what the devil are we doing shipping food overseas to nourish people who hate us? And why are some people spending every dime in their pocket on rap and rock CDs, marijuana and cocaine rather than on food. Is there anyone out there with an answer to these questions?
web posted January 25, 2008

To the poster that said blacks are a burden on the government in every country....come on, how fair is that?  You can't stereotype a whole race of people like that.  There are plenty of black people who are contributing citizens, not just doctors, lawyers and scientists, but minimum wage earning people who get up and go to work everyday just like I do.  People that are exhausted when they get home after a long day at work just like I am.  I agree that there are some black people in our community right now that have caused many of us to become leery of the black agenda, i.e. Cooks, Bibbs, Viola Jackson and of course the now Afro-American Mary Alice Jackson.  But I'm certain that these people do not speak for all black people in this community.  Be fair and don't blame our communities good black leaders and black hard workers for the burden of the bad ones.  All races have members that are a burden to society.

Example: GW proposes are tax rebate to stimulate the economy.  Pelosi and the Dem’s come back and say the rebates should go to everyone, including those that DO NOT PAY TAXES!!!  Also, Pelosi and the crew want to increase food stamps and extend unemployment benefits, as a part of the stimulus package!!!!  This is another step the Dem’s are taking, in their manipulating way to slowly introduce communism into the American gov’t…..oh I am crazy, huh? Does anyone still have questions about the mindset of our county "leaders"? Does anyone still wonder why Edgefield County can't attract more business and industry to the County? These are the people that we are putting out as the face of Edgefield County to the world of commerce.

To all the folks thinking of voting for Barak Hussein Obama...Just remember what his middle name, Hussein, means in Arabic--"Servant of Allah."

Also, the Obama campaign has made a huge mistake by screaming "racist" at the Clintons.  It don't work, it might work with the stupid yankees, but it don't work down here with southerners, white or black.  If you're black, you've probably played the "race card" at least once; and conversely, if you're white, it's been played on you.  All of ya'll know, 90% of the time, it just ain't true. Now we know that black people are understandably proud of Mr. Obama and are defensive about him, but screaming "racist" at the Clintons is counterproductive.  Do you really think there are any white racists left in the Democratic party in South Carolina ?

First off, nobody believes the Clintons are racist and second, you are marginalizing Obama's candidacy.  By screaming racist at every little thing, you have turned him from a candidate who just happens to be black into " the black candidate."

Hillary ain't been screaming, "You don't like me because I'm a woman", has she?   No, hell no !

Frederick Neitsche, the German philosopher said, "To label me is to negate me."  The Obama campaign has just been negated.

Will African-Americans ever realize that Obama is not their present day “Martin Luther King.”
When will they learn his middle name, where he was trained, and his original religion.  Which I think is still his religion.
Why don’t the other candidates attack him on this front, or do they also have other things in their closet that may be worst.
Is there any country in the world,  that blacks have not been a burden on the government??
Hillery Clinton is not any better.  Ask the staff at the White House during “Bill’s” administration??
Please wake up and realize what will happen to this country if either one is elected President

stood around watching with warm coats and umbrellas. Unless Americans are willing to get off their "pride" and do some work, this "mass entrance" will continue.

I wonder (as I'm sure you are too) how many wrecks and deaths need to happen there before something is done.

Editor's note: I believe there has to be three to five deaths at a location in one year before the matter is up for discussion by the SCDOT. White people: If you are dumb enough to vote for Barack Obama, then you deserve everything that you get...or that he takes from you - money, rights, jobs, security.  This man is a racist, whom has a lot of venom and anomosity towards white america.  He believes that the prison system is another form of slavery created by the "white devil" to oppress blacks.  So to fix this problem, as soon as he is president, he will form a civil rights committee to investigate police departments all over the country to figure out why blacks are arrested, on a percentage, moreso than whites.  If you are too laced with "white guilt" to figure this one out, then I will type
s-l-o-w-l-y, so you will understand.

This committee will be filled with racist blacks and white guilt-ridden, black sympathizers; they will find ways
to prosecute good white cops, unjustly. They will find ways to release violent criminals back into the streets and start unjustly targeting law abiding white citizens to meet their quotas.  The quota will be that America, must incarcerate as many whites(as a percentage of population) vs. blacks. If they cannot find enough whites to fraud then they will let guilty blacks go, in the name of 2nd chances!  And just think, Barack knows that some of you white people are just dumb enough to pay your money, to make this happen.

Wake up people and take pride in yourselves and your heritage.  Quit feeling like you owe others anything.

I have been contemplating your recent raves about politics and the candidates. I am curious about as to how you have drawn certain conclusions about Huckabee and Thompson. First, if one looks at Huckabee's record as a governor, one can see that he has flip-flopped on every major issue. His record as governor certainly
points this out. He has pandered to the religious radical right in SC on every issue icluding religion, the Confederate flag, illegal aliens, gov't spending,
etc. I don't know if him declaring that he is a "Christian" has drawn your attention to him, or if it is some other issue. George Bush did the same thing. He declared himself a "Christian" and you fell for that one. Now the radical religious right says that George Bush is not a good "Christian". He pandered, and the religious right believed and Huckabee pandered and they are falling for it again.
Second, Thompson was a lazy senator. He has no real voting record as a senator to study. He made a name
for himself by taking lobbyist money, talking the good talk, and then fled to Hollywood to be on "Law and
Order". What makes him or Huckabee a conservative, because they say they are? I am really confused on what your editorials want out of a candidate. Our country is in a real financial crisis. Millions of people are losing their homes, the credit crunch is crippling our economy, and you want another idiot in the office of president. If the idiots keep lowering taxes, where will the money come from to pay for the necessary programs in our economy.
Yes, there is unnecessary spending, but George "Dubya" Bush was supposedly a conservative also, and look what he has done to this country. We need something more than the pandering, that has been taking place.
How 'bout getting the facts straight instead of using the same fear mongering techniques as those who have
destroyed the US economy and our standing around the world. You may not like it, but we need other
countries for trade and exports. If we don't watch out, you better learn how to write and read in Chinese.

I'll start with this one.

3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance. (Estate tax - protected by Democrats)

Do you understand the estate tax?
Do you know anyone that has ever paid an estate tax?
If you died today, would you have an estate large enough to subject to the estate tax?

No head beating, just yes or no will suffice.

In case you need some info on the estate tax, here it is.

Most relatively simple estates (cash, publicly-traded securities, small amounts of other easily-valued assets, and no special deductions or elections, or jointly-held property) with a total value under $1,000,000 do not require the filing of an estate tax return. The amount was $1,500,000 in 2004 and 2005. For 2006 through 2008, the amount is raised to $2,000,000.  http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=164871,00.html

Editor's note: Yes, I know of those who have had to pay the tax, and they were not among the "richest" of Americans. They worked hard, invested wisely or had large farms. And why should someone have to pay taxes on the property they paid taxes on while alive just because they died? Unless it is for plank 3?

I happen to like Obama's promise of change. Thats what we need change. He gets my vote!!

Editor's note: Change is inevitable. Progress is what is needed. Obama, Clinton, and Edwards' platforms sound more like poster boards for the Ten Planks of Communism than what is best for the county. In case you are wondering what the Ten Planks are I have listed them below. See if they do not fit the "change" they all claim to want or that we already have and they support.

1. Abolition of private property and the application of all rent to public purpose. (public housing, welfare, zoning)

2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax. (Got it already - change it and it's a "tax cut" for the rich)

3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance. (Estate tax - protected by Democrats)

4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels. (Coming soon to a law near you - keywords - "redistribution of wealth" used in all three campaigns)

5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly. (The Central Bank known as the Federal Reserve - created by Democrats)

6. Centralization of the means of communication and transportation in the hands of the State. (FCC, USDOT, and "Fairness Doctrine" ring a bell?)

7. Extention of factories and instruments of production owned by the State, the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan. (Clinton, Obama, and Edwards - we need to work together for the common good, not the individual)

8. Equal liablity of all to labor. Establishment of Industrial armies, especially for agriculture. (The ever present "living wage" promise of all three)

9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the population over the country. (Council on Governments, locally known as USCOG, strongly supported by Democrats, and conforming to unfunded federal madates or the feds will withold your own tax dollars from your state)

10. Free education for all children in government schools. Abolition of children's factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production. (The NEA - teachers union- always backs the Democrats for more money and no progress. Here is a take on education from our archives) In fact, Hillary Clinton suggested all private schools be closed and taken over by the failing Department of Education. Look at our own school board, the majority are solid blind followers of the Democrat Party. Cooks, Bibbs, Jackson, and Jackson will destroy our local school system within four to six years.

I hope you have the strength to continue to report any and all news you come in contact with around our area. I am glad you have the courage to stand up for what is right and don't back down to the "bosses" who think they own everyone and everything in this county!!!!
I am astonished that the citizens of our county would rather read sugar-coated CRAP than the actual news. I am proud that you have come along and provide us with a service no one else has the guts to do.
As for the AFRO-AMERICAN group deal; I find this a travesty that in the year of 2008 that everything is still divided among racial lines. All citizens no matter what their color might be should take pride in their community and make it a better place! Why does Mrs. J feel the need to make this about only African-American culture and heritage? This is about every individuals culture and heritage! I want to see our streets preserved and safe for all who come to our towns. This didn't have to be made into a racial issue, but Mrs. J and the others who named this group have made it into one. All the people who are associated with this group should rethink their ways of thinking and quit excluding a lot of WHITES who want what is best for our communities. The group could have considered a more appropriate name that could have rallied everyone together in these matters instead of dividing us into racial groups once again.
As for the "bosses" of our county, you are abusing your powers and money, and it is time the citizens take a stand against these actions. We should not be wasting the hardworking money of our counties' citizens by padding the pockets of (a certain person). We have given him more than enough power already!
As with all things in life, UNITED WE STAND AND DIVIDED WE FALL!!! To the readers of wandering minds this is a place for free speech and is one of our constitutional rights. We should all be thankful that the EDITOR of this wonderful site has given us a place to do this.
His time is valuable and he uses it to inform us of information that our other news sources refuse to write about! If you readers would use the links and resources he provides you with, you will see that he is truthful and not biased in any manner. He is only reporting what the others don't want us to know. Who should this really make you angry at? I know this post is a lengthy one, but I hope it will make it in. I think it is past time someone stands up for the real REPORTER for EDGEFIELD COUNTY NEWS!
As for voting for our future president...at this time I am clueless as to who is best for our country! As I understand, Mrs. Jackson and her people, want the Town to do more in her community.  If one were to look at what has gone on in the last five years, all the money that the Town has gotten in grants has gone to their communities. At the present time several homes are being up graded through a CDBG Grant.  The park system money has been used to upgrade their playground that they have requested. The street signs that were mention are being taken down by drug dealers.   The Police department has gotten grants for equipment to be used against drug dealers and the boys in the hood.
So now they have formed a club to take care of the boys in the hood. To spend more money, which the Town does not have, in the hood to make it better, when the boys in the hood will just do what they have been doing all along.
Now I understand that their is already a Afro-American Heritage group in Edgefield County. What exactly does this group want? Are they just trying to make the governing body look dumb?  Or, are they getting ready for the election that is coming up in April?

So, its just certain neighborhoods in Johnston that have problems with loud music. Please let me know the areas that are quiet, and do they have a gas station I can use in peace. Evidently, those that blast think that everyone needs to hear the noise.  I don't consider Rap as music. It seems like every time I go somewhere, especially a gas station that someone is going to pull up, leave the car running, windows down and radio blasting.  I really appreciate it when my 3 year old nephew is with me and they are spouting vulgarities every other word in the "song". That's not a certain communities problem, its an everywhere problem. Maybe the gas stations should think about imposing their own type of "noise ordinance".

We’ve organized” Mrs. Jackson exclaims! How about organizing a clean-up detail for your own neighborhoods? How about ministering to the needs of your own instead of sending the police? Does that not fall within the parameters of “community” that is so often preached from black activist?  The government is not a cow to be milked my dear Mrs. Jackson. That’s the public education system. Oops! You already know that don’t you?

Also, if you are trying to stay away “from black and white,” why name it club “Afro”? Why not the Johnston Improvement Club? Then perhaps all of Johnston should rally to your cause. I know why; it is a BLACK thing.  Well, who needs the Caucasoid (that white folks) anyway, when you can have their tax dollars. That’s all that’s important anyway isn’t it? Lets continue to support the idea “we don’t have to work towards a goal, the government will pay for it!”

Hey! that’s why I vote Democrat.

Well if Osama is elected president,  will every city in the country have the blacks robbing, looting and destroying public property. This always happens after a Champion ball-game, or someone in the black community is mis-accussed of a fatal crime. Look at L. A. many years ago, when RODNEY-POHEAD was beaten by four or white policemen, simply because he was full of crack, so   L. A. became a riot zone.(not that area didn’t deserve it).
Even in New Orleans after KATRINA, there were many deaths, and looting of private property. Will (Obama) be handing “CONGRESSTION MEDAL OF HONOR” to the group that takes over WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, L. A. , SANFRANCISCO , ETC.????????? DO not forget that Obama is a MUSLIM.  Raised as one, and hates the U S A  like all MUSLIMS  Sure he claims someother type religion, but you better believe MUSLIM IS 100 % in his blood.

I just moved to Johnston and I love this small town, but the newly formed club that is asking for the police, the council, the county, the city to correct the problem of street signs being knocked down or removed in their neighborhood and the loud music from cars in their neighborhood, this is a neighborhood problem. If the people doing these things do not have respect for their neighborhood IE family's and friend or themselves, It is not the problem of the police, city, council. This is a parent and family problem.
The ones doing this have no respect for themselves. Police your own neighborhood, write down tag numbers of cars playing loud music, when you see someone tearing up something that does not belong to them call the police, call their family. Respect is taught at home. Do a better job, and stop looking for someone else to solve your problems.

Editor's Post: I am just going to throw this out there regarding the issues raised by the "Afro-American Club" in Johnston. This is not racially motivated, simply a objective cursory review of their concerns. The black community is asking for the Town of Johnston to come into their community and protect them from the criminal element of the black community and will no doubt be the first ones to complain that the police are unfairly targeting blacks in disproportionate numbers. I do not envy the job of Johnston Police Chief  Chris Aston who is being placed in a, excuse the phrase, "damned if you do damned if you don't" situation.

by the entire county, without persecution? Why not?

On a side note...i would bet that none of the participates of this new, racially derived, club, are even from Africa... which leads me to point out their own self-separation from America and true Americans, by the implication that they are "Afro" or "African". Sure, everyone should take pride in their heritage, but a forum, supported by tax dollars, should only be about serving the entire public as a whole....not racially dividing work tasks, as these openly racist people are suggesting....think about it!

Editor's note: The building under discussion at this time is not on the square, and yes, the county leases the County Council Chamber Building after spending over a quarter million to make it habitable. Yes, the Edgefield County Building and Planing Department leases space from Bettis Rainsford. We have such fiscally responsible county leaders so you just know this is going to turn out well for the taxpayer. County Administrator John Pettigrew asked if he and County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece could address some of the concerns I raised in my column last week. There is nothing un-American by voting Democrat but the democrats, in my mind, are associated with "Free" programs. We have created a whole population of people that live on Free because they can. My husband and I have always been considerate low income by government guidelines. We raised two children by spending our money wisely with no assistance from the government. They both are grown, raising families of their own and are hard working people. They both know the value of being held accountable for their actions and the consequences and I am proud to say that they are raising good children of their own with the same mentality. We have too many programs in place that make it easy for people to rely on assistance than to solve their own problems. You want to go to college, you work a job and pay for it. You want something that you can't afford, get a second job, a family member falls on hard times, the family jumps in and helps out not the government. We don't need more "Free". We need more responsibility for ourselves. We do need a nationwide insurance program that everyone pays into but it should not be free either.

Editor's note: By removing the demands to make insurance companies force coverage people do not need in order to sell a policy in the state would see a 80% drop in the cost of insuance. My family does not need coverage for having a baby and other coverages we are forced to pay for but will never use.

- What kind of sicko sexually assaults a miniature pony? I think that is absolutely disgusting. That person needs professional help.

- Who the (heck) would want to (have sex with) a pony?  [This was the most tame of many similar comments]

- I question why you would put the story of the man and the pony on (EdgefieldDaily.com). What purpose could that ever serve?

- The content of your "Strange Assault" in Johnston was not appropriate for all readers and was way too explicit.  That was more information than any of us needed to know.  Anymore like that and you'll lose our household as readers.

Editor's note: The reason the story was published, as is done with many stories, is to inform a community about the criminal element among them and the crimes that are being committed around them. Anyone deviant enough to tie up a pony, do that in a pasture in plain view, is just a desperate as someone that would attack and rape an elderly woman or a child for sex in the dark. That is not my opinion, that is a fact. The public has a right, not just a need, to know who is in their midst.

Obama mentioned his church during his appearance with Oprah.  It's the Trinity Church of Christ.  This is interesting. Go to his church's website and read what is written. It is very alarming!  Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of the U.S.  If you look at the first page of their website, you will learn that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to AFRICA. No where is AMERICA mentioned. This guy won't put his hand on his heart during the National Anthem, say the Pledge of Allegiance, and won't wear a flag pin. And he wants to be PRESIDENT? How does this even happen in America? When I was a young man Obama would have been arrested by the FBI and the entire host of Democrat Presidential candidates would be under investigation and abhorred by the entire population. What the (heck) happened?

Editor's note: You want to know how it happened? The government has been in control of education and has driven it to the bottom in the world while spending three times or more than any other country per pupil. (By the way, they want to run your health care too.) They have created a mass of people that are unable to understand the world around them. They are taught that America is great because of its government, not its people. They are taught that Americans are provided with everything by the government. Always listen for the key words, "Redistribution of wealth," as if government distributed the money people have already, not them earning it by hard work and sacrifice to make a better life for their families. Self reliant Americans are hated by the Democrat National Committee and their candidates. You are the "evil rich", make no mistake about it.

However, don't be fooled into thinking the Repulicans have a better record, they don't.

The whole problem is that the more government gets involved in our property, rights, lives, and business, the worse off we become. Now the Federal Government has demanded a National ID Card. Be glad we live in a state that is refusing to cower to the Federalists seeking to destroy State's Rights. I will have more to say on that topic at a later date.

I now attend Strom Thurmond High School and I love it there! I give all my credit to all of my teachers from Merriwether..which none of them will never be "rejects" in my eyes. EVERY SINGLE teacher or person of faculty love each and every one of us kids and are so happy to teach the kids that enjoy going to school there.
I was involved with many activities while attending Merriwether and also made superior grades. The gym coach is far from "400 pounds" and one of those so called "reject teachers" you had the guts to run your mouth about just so happens to be a great advisor, cheer coach, and teacher. She cares about those kids more than you obviously ever will. You should be incredibly thankful to have your child enrolled in such a well organized and clean area. And the PTO has done so much for the school..you obviously aren't involved in your child's schedule or school life enough to realize the plants around the area, or the murals on EVERY wall, or the programs they schedule and set up for the joy of your child! They bust their rear ends every day to make sure they do all they are capable of to make your child's school experience more pleasant. It's none of your business, mine, or anyone else's who doesnt live in that household what goes on in their home life. They care about those students and love them. And  dont you dare talk about the faculty of Merriwether and then not have enough common sense to put your name up beside it. It's obnoxious, and you know youre wrong. WHEN WILL THE TAXPAYERS/CITIZENS OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY WAKE UP?
So, the County Council voted for all employees to receive $34 a day when in travel even when someone else (lobbyist, contractor or business) picks up the tabs?

True colors again come out, do they not?  Mr. Kitchens, would you or any other member of the Council give someone $34 out of your pocket for food when knowing someone else is picking up the tab? I think not..

This action alone clearly shows the taxpayers/citizens of Edgefield County the type of person(s) we have voted onto the County Council.  To demand (yes demand in the form of per diem rates) money from the taxpayers of Edgefield County when that person did not spend any money of their own is just not right.  Per diem money is meant to repay employees in authorized travel for money they spent when away from home.  Per diem allowances are not for the purpose of giving free money to county paid employees.  Oh yes, if expenses were not incurred then the money received is taxable is it not?  What provisions have the County Council implemented to track this money so they can be reported as taxable income?

It looks like it would be cheaper in the long run even if we had to borrow some money. It would definitely eliminate the parking situation. I know the building you are speaking of and it is not big enough to house many offices at all and no room to add on or there will be no parking there either. I’m sure the lease will be astronomical as most of his properties are. I think we all need to contract our councilman and request that they look at this situation hard before they do anything.(Not that it would do any good). I personally don’t think the county should lease any buildings. All I hear is what good financial shape we are in so we need to build our own.

Yes, I agree that the tax code needs to be simplified and the super wealthy need to pay their parts. However, after to listening to non-partisan economists talk about the Fair Tax plan, I do not know if it would be a good idea or work. First, the poor would have to receive money back because a sales or use tax is regressive and does hurt the poor by taking more of their income for basic necessities. This is included in the plan. Second, special interest groups and politicians would be involved in a big struggle for the gov't to give exemptions to certain products and services. This could go on for years and the results would probably not benefit the middle class, as it would the rich and super wealthy. After all is said and done the amount of taxes the middle class would have to pay would be equal to or maybe even higher than it is today. Until we break the grip of special
interests and big corporations on Democratic and Republican politicians, we will go nowhere with solutions to stop unnecessary spending, earmarks, and wasted resources. Finally, the U.S. gov't needs to recoup some of the billions that have been wasted by Haliburton/Bechtel on unfinished projects in Iraq, and on the ones that were never started, with the contractors receiving there money anyway.

Editor's note: The poor would not pay taxes by getting the "prebate" every month to offset taxes they would pay. The great part is all the illegal aliens, drug dealers, and all other "underground" people would pay taxes. You would also see all the jobs that have left America come back. I still do not see a down side.

Sweetwater Road is one of the worst driven roads in the county. I have been passed by cars going well above the posted speed limit while on a double yellow line. Tractors pull out in front of traffic and go slow. I would love to see it as a "no through route" for the big trucks. If they are loaded they can't mantain the speed limit due to the hills. The only time I've seen law enforcement on the road was at a license check at either end.

I know there is some discussion of politics on your site, so i thought i would share this speech with you, that Barack Obama gave at Hampton University, in June 2007.  The mainstream media has done everything in their powers to portray an image of Mr. Obama, as that of a saint, and they have tried to hide his true agenda, from America.  If you have time(approx 10 minutes) to read this speech, then you will see just how scary the "new ideas" of Barack really are. Redistribution of wealth, gov't run healthcare, higher taxes, releasing criminals from prison and forcing employers to hire them, retreat and surrender in Iraq, more "big brother" programs than you can count, and all of this will come at the expense of the American Taxpayers.  The one scary part, of his speech, is his insinuations that the LA riots of 1992 were a direct result of "white america's" oppression of
minorities (that is how I took it).  The speech is too long for the wandering minds section, per your policy,
but could you post it as an attachment so people can understand just what kind of guy he really is. I actually heard clips of it on the radio today (Mike Gallegher 950am), so I decided to pull it up via the internet and pass it along.

Editor's post: I drive all over the county each day. Occasionally I have the misfortune of encountering the most ignorant drivers in my travels and Wednesday was no different. As I was traveling south on Sweetwater Road, followed by other cars, an Edgefield County School bus was approaching the intersection of Republican Road and Sweetwater Road. As we approached, the bus pulled out in front of me forcing me - and those behind me-  to slam on brakes. Then we all got to follow this bus (bus number 508-0223) at 30 and 35 mph for miles.

First off, it is inconsiderate for a slower driver to pull out in front of other drivers rather than let them pass before entering the roadway. Secondly, it is dangerous for a driver of a bus to pull out in front of traffic with a bus load of kids knowing that drivers are approaching from a short distance at a speed of 50 mph. One of the drivers behind me left the roadway to avoid hitting the car in front of them in the chain reaction. Great job there bus driver.

I did a little math. The cost of becoming a (US) citizen is about $700. That means that they (illegal aliens) are stealing $98,000,000,000 by being here. They also cost us about a half a billion (dollars) each year paying to deliver thier babies, pay them tax free for working, and treating them at hospitals for free. How is it too expensive to deport them?

Editor's note: Who is going to do the jobs no one will take? Americans that are getting government subsidized housing, food stamps, welfare, charity, and Social Security SSI for doing nothing? The last estimate available for 2005 says that amount equals working a job for $29,900 a year for a single parent with one child. I know members of law enforcement that make less than that putting thier lives on the line each day.

I am speaking of an idiot known as Ryan B. Not only does he demonstrate his abysmal use of the language, but he makes wild, preposterous claims about the evils white folks inflict on black folks, specifically black teen-agers. On the radio this morning I heard him talking about police beating up young black men. If that were happening Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, not to mention the idiot Qannel X would become long-term residents in this area. The only black teen-agers I know of being mistreated these days are those being shot by their fellow blacks and those hurt fleeing from the scenes of burglaries and carjackings. I have a message for Ryan B. He should tell these black males to stay in school, wear proper clothing, speak in a language everyone can understand, avoid drugs and guns and encourage others to lean a clean, healthy lifestyle. We now live in a society where, by law, everyone gets an equal chance at making a success of themselves. You hurt yourself shuffling down a street with your bare butt hanging out of a set of poorly fitting pants and talking mumbo-jumbo.Ryan B. apparently didn't learn a thing while he was a guest of a federal penal facility after being convicted of Medicare fraud. That, in itself, should have been enough to disqualify him for spewing his racist venom.

So do it, post a comment here and sign your name and say that you did it. Hmphhsee who has the caliber now huh?  Who are you to judge people? You obviously have no personal relationship with the people you criticized because I can tell you that everyone of them has more compassion and dignity than you do.  By the way you talked about the teachers, I suppose that you have never taught before; and if you have, I'm sorry for your students that got to listen to you criticize others everyday.  And if you would have done your research, you would know that Merriwether has some of the highest test scores in the area.

I sincerly hope God will send you whatever it is to heal  your heart of the pain and grief that you are dealing

hope He enables you to take the plank out of your own eye instead of pointing out splinters in others. If you call
yourself a Christian please keep in mind Ephesians 4:26-32 "26 And "don't sin by letting anger gain control over
you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil. 28 If
you are a thief, stop stealing. Begin using your hands for honest work, and then give generously to others in need. 29 Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.30 And do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he is the one who has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of
malicious behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through
Christ has forgiven you."

There really is no excuse for this the slander and hurt that you have caused these people and the rest of the
teachers at Merriwether Middle School that you pointed out. I am truly sorry that you are so upset, but how about confronting the problem instead of hiding behind it.

Just like in Ephesians 4, this is what God is calling each of us to. If God is not in your heart, I pray that He will

I am so disheartened by the personal attack on the teachers and student at MMS. The gym teacher is much more than a Health/PE teacher to the kids there. Yes, she is overweight. Being an athlete for many years tends to take its toll on knees, ankles, etc. Unfortunately, many of us that were athletic as young people, start losing mobility as we age. General wear and tear, and old injuries, keep us from being as active as we'd like to be. Inactivity makes weight control even more difficult the older we get. Her weight does not make her any less of a Health/PE teacher. She is highly educated, and knowledgeable in her subject. She knows first hand how important good health is, and how quickly we can lose it.  I'm thankful for her. She loves and cares for ALL the kids at MMS, and teaches them about respect, morals, tolerance,  and having self worth.  She emphasizes academics before athletics. If anything, her weight is an attribute.  It makes her more in tune to kids that are struggling with weight issues, and the social problems those kids face.  The writer’s comment is a perfect example of the bullying often associated with middle-school-aged children. In reference to the comment about the PTO President's "home life" -  the writer seemed to have a personal insight on that matter, which makes it even more bothersome to me. How could someone close to her make such a remark on a public forum? We all have family matters that are sometimes out of our control, and that we are not always particularly proud of. We should be praying for those involved. The comment about the "child that would be no where without her help" was sickening. That child is bright, articulate, pretty, and has a great future ahead of her. She is perfectly capable of achieving any goal she sets for herself.  What a classless act for the writer to comment in such a way about a child.   And lastly, about the "cheer coach." I have never seen either coach (last year's or this year's) dress in the manner the writer described. They are both young women, and dress age appropriately. Both have always conducted themselves as young ladies, and have never behaved in any way to jeopardize their integrity or the integrity of MMS.  The only "horrible example" I see is the one the writer has set for their child. Their mean-spiritedness and hate filled attack on these people is uncalled for. The writer speaks of "trying to raise responsible adults that will fair well in society."  Seems to me . . . the writer will be the one "looking for therapists" for their child.

The comment should have been reviewed before it was posted.  The people could be identified since each position was occupied by one individual.  Since each person could be identified and the remarks were both slanderous and cruel, the editor of Edgefield Daily should not have let the comment been posted.  That remarks were the work of a very small and vicious mind.  I suspect the individual who wrote them was the parent of a child who was not terribly successful at school.  The person who wrote the remarks may think they are anonymous but the remarks are pretty transparent.

To the editor, please screen comments a little better before posting them.  There is no reason to allow this wonderful forum to be used to inflict harm on others.

Obviously, someone is a very disgruntled and disturbed person. To say the things that were said about the teachers at MMS is wrong. What happened? Did your precious darling lose her boyfriend to another cheerleader?  Are you mad at one of the teachers because she/he wouldn't GIVE your baby an A?

It's people like YOU who give parents a bad name. I also have children who attend MMS, and I am very pleased with the school my children are fortunate enough to attend. If you are so darn unhappy with MMS, then why don't you pull your child out and send him/her to another middle school? Or better yet, HOME SCHOOL. Obviously, no one can do things as well as you can. I can assure you, one week at another area middle school and you'd realize just how fortunate you are.

You stooped to a new low when you started slandering individual teachers who work at the school. Whatever issue you have with these people, why not be decent enough to go face to face with them rather than getting on here and giving cheap shots? It appears you don't have the guts to do that. It's much easier to hide behind your computer screen. I don't blame you....I wouldn't want anyone to know I was capable of writing such garbage either. As for teachers--they need our support and appreciation. It takes someone special to do what they do day in and day out. I'm sure any one of them would gladly let you walk in his/her shoes for a day so you could see that it's no easy job. I, for one, could not do it. I venture to say, with your bad attitude, you couldn't either.

If FCHS is such a glorious school in your eyes, then maybe you could pull your child out of MMS right now and send him/her straight to FCHS. I'm sure they'd allow this....they have no rules!! In the meantime, keep your negativity out of the halls of MMS. To think-- we all wonder why children mistreat one another and how some can be so cruel. It appears that some students at MMS are being taught that this type of behavior is acceptable. I think you need to take a long look in the mirror at yourself as a parent...and a person!!!!

I would like to respond to the person who bashed MMS.  First of all, the cheer coach is a wonderful person and an excellent teacher!  I have never seen her dress (improperly). Shame on you for judging her.  You obviously have never taken the opportunity to listen to the lessons that she teaches the girls.  She is a Christian who is very involved in her church.  You should be less quick to place judgement. Who do you think you are judging people? Secondly, what gives you the right to say that about someone's weight? You should also note that  the PTO president's home life is her business, not yours, mine or anyone else's. We all have problems, but everyone knows she works very hard for MMS.  Anyone who says otherwise is only jealous of her position. I saved the best for last...how dare you imply the teachers of MMS are "rejects from other schools!" There are wonderful teachers at MMS. Look at the test scor es at MMS. They do not reflect a school where students are being taught by rejects or low calibre teachers. Again, who do you think you are judging everyone? Leave MMS alone. It is a great school with great teachers.  May God bless you in such a way that you will be less likely to pass judgement on others.

There was even a picture of what it will look like. It will be done in three phases and the first phase will cost six million dollars!!  If they can't pay with funds they already get, I guess the board of directors is planning to pay out of their pocket. As a group, is their net worth large enough to cover that?  I am not a lawyer, but under the law, I think they are responsible for any cost associated with  unlawful or illegal decisions.

Editor's note: There is no loan, there is no $6 million, and Fox Creek Charter School and the Edgefield County School District may find themselves in Federal Court. From what I have seen, FCCHS and its board members better have $6 million laying around. They may need it.

His only mistake was stopping at the next door convience station to relieve himself before helping himself to the easiest heist of all time. If not for that  the cops wouldn't have a clue.
Hey Andy!! Goober!! Gomer!! Barney, put that bullet in your gun!!
I admire our local lqw enforcement, but they are going to be on the wrong side of some jokes for awhile.

Mr. Editor...Keep up the good work with all of your reporting. Those who are complaining the loudest are either guilty of something, don't respect free speech or have no concept of freedom of expression. You idiot complainers need to know that it is the job of an editor to report all types of news and be ready to back up any news sources when necessary. Edgefield Daily does what the Founding Fathers of this country composed within the Constitution. If you don't like what you read or hear...change your information source or subscribe to the Hillary Clinton website for some of the best (bull manure) around.

Editor's note: The news is what the news is. I do not create it, influence it, or instruct it. I just report it.

I am from Martinez (Ga.) and saw the story on (WJBF News 6) tonight about the mother with 2 sons in Iraq and found your website. Thank you for helping this mother get to see her son. That was such a touching story. It is so nice to hear about good news. It seems that the news is always about bad things and it was nice to see something good for a change. Please let the woman that did this know that I will be praying for her. God Bless her for what she did.

Editor's note: The. Korreck's sons are both in the military, however, only one is being deployed to Iraq at this time.

Your guy Huckabee won in Iowa but you missed on Obama. How does it feel to be right only half the time?

Editor's note: I never said who would win in Iowa. Who really cares who less than 1% of a state supports? The only poll that matters comes in November. I do find it interesting that Hillary Clinton would have touted a win in Iowa as proof she is the front runner, but now it is relegated to a non issue. The first real primary election has yet to be held. Anyone can "caucus" in Iowa, including members of the campaign staff. The "national media" never tells you that.
web posted January 5, 2008

I don't think you are "evil" I think you just don't give a (manure) about other people and exploit them to be sensational and claim to be "news."

Editor's note: Our motto is: We will never report what does not happen and we will never quote that which is never said. Everything else is fair game. If you do not want to be in the news, don't break the law. EdgefieldDaily.com is the most quoted news agency in Edgefield County by area media outlets.

I was happy to know that your web site was able to help the mom see her son off. I can't imagine what families of those deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan go through. My comment though is regarding the air fare to North Dakota. of $450.00. Why can't the Army or the airlines offer discounts to these persons, or why not set up a way for persons to donate frequent flyer miles to help families reunite or get to a loved one in a military hospital. How does that fare compare to say fare to Cozumel Mexico? Many times its much more expensive to fly domestic flights. When Hurricane Katrina hit , I volunteered to go help with medical needs, my ticket on Delta from Augusta to Austin TX was $1200.00 and Uncle Sam paid it! Well, you and I paid it, but there seems to me the military morale and welfare staff should be able to help or do more to help. Its awful anyone is put in this situation.

Editor's post: Due to the number of responses to the story on the mother of a soldier heading to Iraq I chose only a few to post tonight. I hope the information I provided by those who wrote in is sufficient. Please do not be offended that your post did not make it online. For brevity I tried to choose those that represented the general questions or inquiries sent in.

I saw on the tv that Edgefield Daily was the way Augusta got the news on the bank robbery. Do they pay you for that?

Editor's note: No, that is provided as a professional courtesy.

I said a prayer for the people who gave Mrs. Korreck her wish. And I want to thank (EdgefieldDaily.com) for making it possible. You do so much good.

Editor's note: I did not do anything that brought this about. I just report the news and publish the Wandering Minds. I will say that the couple did a lot more than was listed in the story. I am working on a way to privately acknowledge the Good Samaritans. I do not know how at this point, but I hope to create an award in honor of them.

I know Nora (Korreck) and I think the woman (and her husband) that did this you should tell everyone who they are. This was answered prayer. God works in ways we can't understand and I think you should tell us who answered the prayers.

Editor's note: God answers prayer. Who He chooses to answer them through is irrelevant. Thank God that the prayers were answered. That should be enough.

To the person who is bashing people that fall for scams: BITE ME! I thought it couldnt happen to me and it did in the Spring of 07. I got scammed out of $1500.00 that I am just now recovering from. I did not deserve it and dont you dare think for one minute that you are immune to it happening to yourself. The person that got me was a professional and even my local bank fell for a fraudulent check that was involved in the matter.
If it does happen to you, dont bother taking it to the Sherriff's office, you'll never hear from it again. It's almost like getting scammed all over again.

Do you have an source for this comment/opinion?   "It is Huckabee’s stand on the Fair Tax that has driven him to be the number one candidate on the Republican ticket, even though the press refuses to admit it."

Which national poll is Huckabee the number one candidate on the Republican ticket?  I've seen him #1 in Iowa, but not nationally.  These things can change quite quickly, though.

If you a states rights man, do you support the federal gov't raiding medical marijuana patients in states that have held ballot iniatives and have legalized medical pot?  I picked this conservative big gov't issue for a reason - it is constroversial and really tests weather someone can look beyond the politics of an issue and stick to their states rights platform or not.  I think only Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo (former candidate) stick to their States Rights platforms on this issue on the Republican side.  Huckabee is not a states rights man, IMHO.

Finally, you will have to make the case that Ron Paul isn't the biggest States Rights candidate from either side of the aisle.  My case is made by his voting record.....and I'll challenge you to find an issue that Ron Paul abandons States Rights on.  Perhaps abortion is that issue.  Paul is a very strong anti-abortion.

I like (Ron) Paul (as) the best of the Republicans.

Editor's note: The basis for my opinion is just that, mine. You ask a lot of questions so let me answer that I do not believe the federal government has any "right" to interfere in any issue not directly spelled out in the US Constitution be it drugs, abortion, or anything else not directly written into the limits placed upon the federal government. All those are State's Rights issues. If one state enacts laws on any of the above that you disagree with you can fight to change it within the state or move to a state you agree with. The independent states do, and should, have more power over the laws governing their boundaries.

Although I agree with some of Ron Paul's statements in this interview with John Stossel, I disagree with his previous statements of pulling out of the battle against Islamic Nazis and deporting illegal aliens. It can be done if the politically correct police would get out of the way of local and state law enforcement.

Any "unfunded mandate" or withholding of federal funds paid in by any state if they do not cower to the federal government should be considered coercion and blackmail.

Maybe I should run for President. I could solve all the country's problems in six months.

I printed off my ballot for the best of edgefield and I want to know who the (heck) wrote this thing. It looked like something from grade school. I hope next year you take a little more time to make it professional. I expected more from you.

Editor's note: EdgefieldDaily.com did not produce the ballot, we only published it. It was produced by the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce.

I am surprised that although Edgefield County has two Veterinarians and at least one other grooming and boarding business, animal care was left off of the Peachiest of Edgefield County Ballots. So I am reminding everyone to find a place to include their favorite vet and groomer on their ballot. If a county is large enough to support this many pet care businesses there must be a lot of animal lovers here! I will vote for my favorites under service provider and Professional service provider!  On a different note thank you for all your hard work! I love reading Edgefielddaily.com!!

Editor's note: Thank you for reading. Actually, there are three vet clinics, not two, in the county. I did not design the ballot and have had to rework it twice in order to make it available online. An EdgefieldDaily.com "Best of" planned earlier last year was held back to join with the Chamber of Commerce in their endeavor. You have a very good point and I agree that the two "services" locations would be a good place to "write in" a business occupation not listed.

What a nice act of kindness of the people who donated the ticket. Believe it or not, there are still GOOD people in this world.

re: (the) "Hillary being beautiful", I read the other day that Slick Willie was walking his dog. As he went past a Secret Service agent, the agent asked Slick "is that a new dog sir"? Slick said "yes, I got it for Hillary". The agent looked again at the dog and said "excellent trade"!

Your little display of Hillary Clinton just goes to show how biased your "news" is. Thanks for proving my point!

Editor's note: Obviously you have a problem distinguishing between News and Opinion. The News presented on EdgefieldDaily.com is unbiased and is simply the facts involved in the particular story. Opinions expressed in my personal column or in the Wandering Minds are just that, opinion. I have never slanted a News story. I present the facts and you are left to draw your own conclusions. I challenge you to find one News story in the history of EdgefieldDaily.com that was "slanted" or "biased".

Editor's post: The Wandering Minds has, in the past, brought attention to problems, forced politicians to act on issues, and now it has granted a wonderful gift from a very generous couple to a poster. I wish I could name them but they asked to remain anonymous. So let me say they were a Godsend and have brought tears of joy to a mother of a soldier heading to Iraq. In one of our exchanges of e-mails they said they read the Wandering Minds everyday so I would like for you to send in your thoughts on this act of kindness. Join me in thanking them.

I want readers of EdgefieldDaily.com and the Wandering Minds to send in a ballot for the Best of Edgefield County. Show your numbers and be counted. Support EdgefieldDaily.com by voting. The corrections to the ballot provided have been made.

I've asked one of the (Fox Creek Charter High School) board members and they said they can use the money the school gets for whatever they need for the school. You just don't like them for some reason. Why don't you lay off?

Editor's note: You were lied to. That is no surprise to me, however, there is a habit of that from them. They cannot, in any way shape or form, use the monies recieved from taxpayers to build a school or to pay on a loan for the purpose of building a school.

I take it from your column you are a Republican. Why don't you just say so instead of pretending your not biased?

Editor's note: As I have said many times before, I do not belong to any political party and do not vote along party lines. I have voted for Republicans and Democrats. I vote according to who I feel is the best candidate with solutions to problems, not lies and promises regardless of their party affiliation. In certain elections I will skip some ballot races because I feel neither candidate is worthy of my vote.

This was found in the article mentioned:

Forty states and the District of Columbia have passed charter school legislation; 10 states do not have charter schools. South Carolina is one of 14 states that does not provide any state money for charter school facilities. The money that Palmetto State charter schools receive is based on the number of students multiplied by the county's average per-pupil revenue figure. That money must cover every cost the school has, including its building

http://www.scstatehouse.net/code/t59c040.htm and this is the statement from the legislation to form and support charter school formation in SC

(A) A local school board of trustees sponsor shall distribute state, county, and school district funds to a charter school as determined by the following formula: the previous year's audited total general fund revenues, divided by the previous year's weighted students, then increased by the Education Finance Act inflation factor, pursuant to Section 59-20-40, for the years following the audited expenditures, then multiplied by the weighted students enrolled in the charter school, which will be subject to adjustment for student attendance and state budget allocations based on the same criteria as the local school district. These amounts must be verified by the State Department of Education before the first disbursement of funds. All state and local funding must be distributed by the local school district to the charter school monthly beginning July first following approval of the charter school application and must continue to be disbursed to the charter school for the duration of its charter and for the duration of any subsequent renewals.

Editor's note: Fox Creek cannot use funds provided to build, construct, or borrow for a new school building. The school is already in violation of its Charter and will be forced to address those issues in the near future.

When ever they started this sidewalk project they started down close to the IGA. When they started the business has two driveways. They closed off both driveways so no traffic could get into the business. Take into consideration that this is a small business and Christmas is the biggest time of the year to make money. The sidewalks went all the way across the front of this business all the way across the business next door. The business next door is closed down so I guess they figured that it didn't matter. When they started a remark was made by  three well know people that It wasn't a big deal maybe not to them but I know it did to the person that ran that business. The workers worked at night to make sure that other businesses had at least one driveway open. It took two weeks for them to finally give one driveway to this business after they started it first. What since does this make please make me understand this. All this was within three weeks before Christmas. Maybe it is who you know or who you dont know.
