To the person saying " you have to be
someone that has a child in the school" , that is completely
false. You don't have to have a child in the school. There
are several people on the current Board who do not have a child
attending Fox CreeK High School. So, if anyone in the
community is interested in running in May, I encourage you to do
so. The Board can have a total of 13 people.
Editor's note: It is not a general election and only those affiliated
with the school have a vote. I have no idea who can run in the private
election.

I read with interest the story on the
meeting Thurs nite. Mr. (Rep.)
Clyburn
said money was tight and I take that to mean the county is going to
get cut even (m)ore this year. As a county employee I'd like to know if
they plan to try to make us pay for the benifits they promised us when
we went to work?
We're the lowest paid county employees inthe CSRA and I'd rather quit
than take a pay cut!!! I love my job and the people I work with but I
can't take not getting raises and then get hit with a pay cut.
Editor's note: Right now the county is not sure what the state will do.
If the fundng remains the same there will be no changes as far as I can
see. If cuts are made from funds provided by the state, it would get
ugly. It would come down to providing county needs against wants padded
with pet give-aways.
In other words, it would come down to a simple question of protecting
taxpayers' services and county employees over those who get free money
for being politically connected. A repeat of last year's budget debate.

Needless assault. I thought that's what democracy was about, free
speech. So what if she did a wonderful job running a meeting. She's
going to come looking for you with her hand out soon asking for money.
Denigration, not hardly. Commended for what, not saying anything when
her husband was drawing a big fat paycheck for being unqualified to run
the day-to-day business of the county. What rights has Mrs. Pettigrew
lost in the last year? If she is going to put herself in the public

True dat! But if you look, the pendulum is swinging back.
The race card has been overplayed and people are beginning to wake
up. Playing the race card to usurp positions in local and
national politics has a very short term shelf life. As a matter
of fact, it will have long term consequences. The tactic has been
used to get to the white house, to maintain seats at the local tables,
and to wrest a majority at the school board tables, but soon the
repercussions of such ugly and selfish tactics will be felt.
Blacks will lose their power because the whites that helped propel them
to these positions will see that if you disagree with their liberal,
socialist, entitlement agendas, they accuse you of racism. So,
the answer will be--if we can't debate the issues in a meaningful way
and are accused of being racists even when the white vote was
instrumental in propelling them to their positions, why elect them in
the first place? The racism tactic was successful for the
race-baiting, self-serving, but it has been used at the detriment of
all that has been achieved in the last 150 years. That's a
shame. The black community should be considerably upset.
And before we get the argument that it was the black vote that
propelled our man to the white house--do the math. Oops. You may
not be able to do the math if you were taught in public schools fixated
on entitlement programs instead of teaching, ehemmmm-did you see the
recent laundry list of "programs" being circulated by the School
District?
The black population comprises of 17-19% of the nation's
population. Considering that 19% of 300 million is 57 million,
about the number of votes the Messiah received, that would mean that
every black man, woman, and child would have had to vote...and we all
know, in legal elections, children can't vote. So, there would
have had to have been a lot of white racists that voted for the Messiah
to put him in office. Also remember this--with the Hispanic
population growth, the blacks are rapidly becoming the minority,
minority. Coupled with the backfiring of the racism charge, they
may not be at the table much longer. And all at their own doing.

Interesting. You had two guys stand up for teachers and the

political hacks didn't like their unconventional and in your face
tactics. They were taking on the corruption, but the walking largemouth
down there in Merriwhether and the legal eagle here in Edgefield
started torpedoing their efforts because they were too harsh.
What's ironic, the walking largemouth asked one of them to get
involved, and because he didn't like Jackson and Kemp's tactics he
started bath mouthing them and kissing up to Crenshaw, telling her she
was doing such a fine job. They where gaining momentum and
support. People were starting to stand up, call in anonymous
tips, provide information. Instead, Jackson and Kemp were
torpedoed and told to back off. They were close, real close-and
you know how you can tell they were close-cause the corrupt played the
race card, but they shut up when Jackson called them on it (http://www.edgefielddaily.com/letter052209.html
). And now that they have backed off, the corrupt have become
empowered, emboldened, and readily accept the referendum you just gave
them-do whatever they want, the one's that stood up to them are gone,
and that leaves no one to challenge them. Somewhat similar to our
current national foreign policy-if we're nice and glad hand our
enemies, maybe they'll be nice in return. NOPE! That
mindset, whether in war or politics, will be your demise. The
advise given is good advice-VOTE THEM OUT! But that's not good
enough. Some of them should be pillaried for their use of their
position for personal gain.
You said it. There's no use in complaining. Either you
stand up and fight a fight, or you lay down and let them walk all over
you. And with the recent raises, you see what they'll do when
they're not challenged. Go figure.

Have the folks in Murphy Village received
permission from the Edgefield County Planning and Development
Commission to change the south end of the county into a camper park? A
camper is not a mobile home! Isn’t it a county regulation to have all
trailer homes secured with trailer tie downs, hard pipe sewer
connections, be under pinned and hard wired to power poles? How are
they allowed to live in various sized campers, 18ft to 40+ft, through
out the Village with out meeting occupancy requirements? What kind of
an impression does this make on any business or individual thinking of
relocating to Edgefield County as they approach the county from Highway
25, the major thoroughfare from the Interstate? Can the laws at least
be enforces for more than a select few so that property values won’t
decrease any further? Who in our county government needs to answer to
this?
Editor’s note: Building codes are enforced by the Building and Planning
Director Mike Reed’s Office. If you are not satisfied with results

A small business is defined by http://www.cybercitymommies.com/Glossary.html
as "either one having less than $500,000 in sales (revenue) per year
and has less than 500 employees". The SEC defines "small business" as
"domestic companies with revenues of under $25 million, and not
investment companies". So when someone talks about small business job
creation and small business owner revenues, one should immediately ask
what size small business are you referring to?
Editor's note: Over 80% of all jobs are created by small businesses
earning between $200,000 and $500,000 a year, not counting payroll,
expenses, insurance (heath care costs), and other things delineated as
"profits". You would know this if you worked in the private sector

Re: Gas Prices
lol, I am sorry, you are right… it was a *bull* market run. It is
unfortunate that the entire context of my argument was missed, over one
mistype. Also, I said stupid Republican *Economic Policy*, not
stupid Republican Party. I’ll admit, the GOP has been quite
effective in twisting the arm of the American people – often to their
own unknown dismay. It has even happened here in SC -(hint,
state’s chief executive upgrading to first class, going to political
events on your dollar, while cutting funding for public schools).
Having middle class folks vote against “social programs”, and tax cuts
that are only going to affect the most successful of businesses, quite
frankly is scary ingenious.
But back to the economic policy that I think you were trying to
discuss. I was saying that the McCain economic policy (GOP tax
policy in general), cutting taxes for the wealthiest of Americans –
many “small business owners” – was a stupid idea. First of all,
what is a “small business”? If you are the sole owner of a
business, and you are making more than $250,000 (these are the people
Obama will be taxing) –honestly I wouldn’t really consider that a
“small” business. $20,000 a month is a lot of cheese. What
if you made $1mil/year off of your “small” business? $80k/month –
and still could be considered a “small business”. You can have 70
employees yet you are still a “small” business? I’m not sure of
the exact text-book definition of the word, but it seems a bit
objective. But that’s really just a tangent.
This type of economic policy was a stupid decision at the time, and
here is why: in tough times, people are stingy with their
money. Case and point: the nation’s largest banks.
They received a huge cash infusion via TARP in in 2008, and were
*reluctant to loan out any of it*until almost 2010 - (see
second graphic). Cut taxes for small business owners and what
will they do in the same circumstances??? Here is an example,
let’s say you are Dan and you own a hardware store. Your payroll
credit is cut off from the bank because the bank is having hard
times(see sentence above).
As the business owner, you don’t know what to do. You will have
to pay out of their pocket money for payroll and supplies. Since
you are unsure how long it will be before the bank will lend to you for
your payroll, or what will happen with the economy in the future, you
will *not be creating jobs*. Under these circumstances, as a
smart business owner, you would not be hiring employees. This is
the problem with the McCain “trickle-down” philosophy, one that put
many independents on the ropes during the 2008 campaign. If you
want to find out more about tax cuts and incentives for hiring that
Obama has put in place for small business, go
here.
On another note, Obama recently placed new restrictions on banks.
“We want our money back” he said [video
link]. In 2000 banking restrictions were lifted from some of
the nation’s largest banks – a move that led them to extremely
speculative and dangerous investing practices from 2000-2008 (ie:
credit default swaps). Basically, now the “Volcker Rule”
puts back in place regulations stating that banks should act like a
bank, making money from interest on loans, and not from running hedge
funds or other investment vehicles.
Signed: An idiot
Editor's note: Dear idiot, may I correct a few things for you. 1) John
McCain has never been president. 2) All public sector banks have paid
back the "bail out" money plus interest so Obama chanting "we want our
money back" is a lie. The only banks that have not paid the money back?
- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mack, owned and operated by the government. In
fact, their debt limit (which led to the disaster in the first place)
has been raised using taxpayer dollars. 3) Obama and the Democrats
continue to take over more and more of the private sector including a
new bill to seize
control over all student loans. 4) Almost 80% of investors see that
Obama
and his policies are "anti-business".
Clearly President Ronald Reagan was right, "government", especially
Obam's government, is not the answer, "it is the problem".

"Frankly, I don't know what it is about California, but we seem to have
a strange urge to elect really obnoxious women to high office. I'm not
bragging, you understand, but no other state, including Maine, even
comes close. When it comes to sending left-wing dingbats to Washington,
we're number one. There's no getting around the fact that the last time
anyone saw the likes of Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein and Nancy
Pelosi, they were stirring a cauldron when the curtain went up on

RE: Driving too fast for conditions
There is no law that states that an officer of the law must write you a
ticket for driving too fast for conditions. That may be the state
highway patrol’s policy and/or procedure but it is not the
law. The law states that giving a ticket or warning is at the law
enforcement officer’s discretion. And as far as trying to avoid hitting
a deer it is better that you not try to avoid the deer. There is more
of a chance that you will cause more damage to your vehicle by running
off the road and hitting unmovable objects and/or hitting another
vehicle or person. The best thing to do is to slow down and either
square up on deer or hit it with a glancing blow. It’s easier to fix
the front of the vehicle than the front and another part of the
vehicle. Over all it is best to slow down and pay attention to what is
going on around you. Hitting a deer in Edgefield County may at times be
unavoidable but you can reduce the chances if you are aware of your
surroundings. And lastly be grateful that the officer wasn’t hurt not
mean spirited and wishing him a ticket. because while you were probably
sleeping he was patrolling his beat and protecting the town.

Yup, the only way to keep the machine turning is to constantly change
or manipulate the numbers to make yourself, your failed policies, and
programs appear to be working. That way the taxpayer sees
improvement and doesn't say anything about the wastefulness of the
system. And just in time-the Superintendents and other politicos
in the education system needed their raises. And yes, ours just
got hers-$5000. Bad thing is, the School Board should know the
numbers are being manipulated, but do they say anything?
Nope. But of course, four of the seven, oh wait, five-Andy
Livingston-toe the line and vote the party line to keep the stuff
floating at the top. Mark these words-the education system is
going to be in the same exact situation the auto industry is
in. The unionized system will eventually be unable to support
itself. If you look at it, our education system is already their,
they're just successful right now in hiding it. Sooner or later
though, they won't be able to hide it any more. It too, like
every other socialized system will collapse under its own weight. But
remember, it's all in the name of children.

Let me clear up a few points made in a previous post, and totally
misunderstood by the person posting the partial comment above. 1) The

whether it is negative or positive has to be deciphered by the reader.
2) When John Gerrard submitted his letter to the editor, he could have

it's possible to do. 3) Nobody ever said the Tea Party would approve of
Boss Hogg. 4) The Tea Party is supposed to be grass roots organization

Nashville. I think $539 is a hefty chunk to pay to attend their
convention.

English — 4 credits
Mathematics — 4 credits
Laboratory Science — 4 credits
Foreign Language — 3 credits
Social Sciences — 3 credits
Other — 2 credits
Physical Education/ROTC — 1 credit
Total of 21 credits required for admission to a 4 yr
institution. are they going to ask colleges to drop
requirements so they can save money as well? Cutting block
scheduling is a horrible idea.Stuents actually perform better with
block scheduling. how about we eliminate the redundant administrators
and require districts to consolidate. While it may not be popular it
is time for larger counties such as Aiken county to consolidate
and eliminate certain dictatorial supervisory positions. stop cutting
the students educational opportunities, and start cutting administrator
opportunities. trim the fat from the top eliminate all
standardized testing that is NOT required. they are outrageously
expensive to administer. we do not need them. we know we are last in
public education. Did it ever occur to anyone that school
administrators are the ones responsible for blowing the budget?
(example aiken county put in a private bathroom for MV's principal.)
make them responsible for failing our kids. But our lawmakers
refuse to see the real issues. After all, that would mean
upsetting the entrenched good old boy system. why would our lawmakers
ever try to break free from that outdated, back room political system?
it has worked so well for us all these years. How long will it be ok to

I'm sick of breathing your second hand smoke whenever I go out.
Also, if you make your employees smoke outside; could you please get
them more than 10 feet from the entrance. You get really gassed
when you walk in the door, also the smoke backflows into the
business. This includes local restaurants, fast food joints,
grocery stores, and health care facilities, especially the
hospital. Why are health care facilities, this means Edgefield
County Hospital, even allowing smoking on the premises ?
Aiken county and the state of Georgia have already banned indoor
smoking. MCG does not allow smoking on premises. Businesses
whine they will lose money with a smoking ban, bull. Most of the
smoking is being done by employees, not customers. I would think
in the current economic environment, only an absolute total fool would
walk off a job over a smoking ban. There would be 10 people ready

county.
One of my litmus tests for any politician is, "Do you support a smoking

"rich" goes, who do you think these people are? They are small business
owners who control over 80% of all jobs. You raise their taxes, they
cut jobs, not add them.
As far as small businesses go, they have been begging for relief for
years. They cannot afford to offer their employees health
insurance because of the high cost of it. Even if you are a
person with good health and no bad habits that will affect your health,
the cost is over $1,000 a month and that is with a high
deductible. When the bottom fell, the small businesses were the
ones affected first. Their ability to borrow capitals from the
banking system dried up.
Do you know that companies can charge an interest rate of 450% in South
Carolina on loans? Check out the URL: http://www.cashnetusa.com/images/license/sc2.jpg.
And believe it or not this company is accredited by the BBB.
Check this out: https://www.bbb.org/online/consumer/cks.aspx?ID=106120810658.
The loans given to small businesses are loaded with loopholes that
support the banking industry. Now you can feel sorry for the
banking system, but when I see people walking away with bonuses in the
excess ofmillions and we are fighting to stay afloat, I really can’t
feel sorry for them.
Do you realize that credit card companies have had the legal rights to
up their interest rate anytime they wanted with no repercussions?
And I really do not believe that you had poor people receiving help
from the government running around with credit cards. Poor people
do not have $10,000 or more money in credit cards debts.
We, the middle class, were not protected by the Republicans with their
‘trickle down economy’. The rich pocketed their increases.
And since you mentioned those who receive help from the federal
government, “Who do you think is pocketing the money that is providing
this help.” All of these benefits, (low income housings,
vouchers, etc) are going to the rich. And they are being
reimbursed triple what they have paid out. The rich are not
hurting. But it is your prerogative to feel sorry for the banking
industry; but don’t expect my sympathy. Yes, they have paid back
TARP money. I can’t figured out why they wanted our money in the
first place. If they needed our money, they would have kept
it. When President Obama insisted on accountability, they paid it
back – with interest so that they could continue with ‘business as
usual. Believe me, “big businesses do not have your welfare at
heart”.

Sounds as though the author is a sock puppet for Bettis. In such
a short time he sure dug up a lot of information on Bettis and his
accomplishments. For someone to have been able to list that
lengthy list of accomplishments appears to have had an inside track, or
was spoon-fed the resume by the puppet master himself. If one
were to really investigate these accomplishments, they may find that
every deal cut, job created, business located, piece of land sold, or
whatever, was surely because there was something in it for
Bettis. Is this the same Bettis Rainsford that tried to shove a
$23 million dollar piece of property and school down the citizens of
this county's throats to "centrally" locate a new high school, which
turned out to be only 8.3 miles closer, and yet the real reason was to
unload the industrial park he couldn't develop-hence the birth of the
charter school. Moreover, is this the Bettis that recently tried
to sell the Edgefield County School Board a "lottery ticket" for $5000
to see if they could squeeze or extort money from SC&G because they
were building a facility in Fairfax County and not here, and he thought
we had the right to get a stipend from someone else's hard work?
Yeah some, economic development. I also know first hand Bettis
(removed) try to pressure people in not associating with people that
speak out against him (Bettis) and try to get them to write editorials
denouncing those that speak against him, and praise him. Oh yeah,
and you really know how we can tell the author is a sock puppet for
Bettis-he's attacking the Editor. They sure don't like it when he

eternal dirt nap-and look what the people are doing now-they are
actually challenging his seat and just may win. The winds of
change are a blowin' and it's not only in the liberal bastion of
Massachusetts.
Editor's note: I believe the property that was considered for a central
high school on Van Road was owned by Hadden, Hadden, Finely, and
Thompson. The same people who purchased the property the county wanted
to build the Industrial Park on before it was moved forward.

Re: Gas Prices
The reason gas is getting more expensive is linked to speculation on
Wall Street that the demand for gas will increase in the near future.
The economy is expected to have started to recover by the second half
of 2010, and as folks get back to work they will be buying more gas.
Then again there are those doubt-mongers out there who question
recovery, and I point those people to the current running 10 month Bear
market rally that has symbolized the quickest "free market"
economic turnaround in our country's history. Job losses numbers
curtailed at 10%, and most of the infrastructure Obamabucks still
haven't even hit the street. I'm sure just having cut taxes from
the
wealthiest of Americans would have done the same thing??? With
this type of economy do you think that cutting rich people's taxes is
going to help create jobs? No, people are not willing to take
risks.
Stupid Republican economic policy.
Editor's note: Okay, Obama's "stimulus" is working although 90% of it
hasn't been distributed and the continued job loss numbers are good
news somehow. The Bush tax cuts were "across the board" (that means for
all taxpayers, not just the rich) and the Democrats are planning to let
them expire when the economy is in the tank. Obama and the Democrats
have spent more money in one year than all presidents and congress'
combined and that is somehow wonderful policy?
As far as the "rich" goes, who do you think these people are? They are
small business owners who control over 80% of all jobs. You raise their
taxes, they cut jobs, not add them. If the election for president was
held today, a recent poll shows Obama would get less
than 40% of the vote because of his "leadership". He wants to tax
the banks who have paid back the bailout (forced on most of them)
because they paid
the money back with interest. Since almost everybody has a bank
account, who do you think will pay that tax increase? You will. So much
for not raising taxes on the little guy. Not to mention that the wild
spending has created a debt that will take generations to pay off.
Obama has also raised taxes on the majority of lower income people.
Statistics show that the lower the income, the higher percentage of
smokers there are, and yet he raised taxes by $0.70 a pack on
cigarettes.
Cap and Trade energy policies submitted will double the cost of
electric bills and the healthcare takeover will cost an additional $2.4
trillion. That will be paid for by who? Everybody. Except those who
live off the government, which is the Democrats "base" supporters.
Stupid Democrat socialist economic policy.

It appears that our devoted County Council
Chairman violated a section of the SC Ethics code when he introduced
himself as Edgefield County Council Chairman during a dispute [reported
as an assault] involving his family member. Had he just used his
name and not included his elected position all would have been
fine. To use his elected position to influence a law enforcement
officer in the course of his duty whether consciously done or not is a
clear violation. Yet from the comments on Wandering Minds it
appears that few seem to care this was done,
No police report is available yet? Has anyone done a FOIA

THE LAW IS THE LAW
So "if" the US government determines that it is against the law for the
words "under God" to be on our money, then, so be it.
And "if " that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are
not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it.
I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding US
citizen.
I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter
people than I are in positions to make good decisions.
I would like to think that those people have the American public's best
interests at heart.
BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?
Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot post His
Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government
and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas
celebrations which honor the God that our government is
eliminating from many facets of American life.
I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving
& Easter. After all, it's just another day.
I'd like the"US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good
Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays."
After all, it's just another day.
I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to
worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all it's just
another day.
I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if
all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good
Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since
those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that
is trying to be "politically correct."
In fact....I think that our government should work on
Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God...)
because, after all, our government says that it should be just
another day....What do you all think????

that you will only find in the Wandering Minds, at least for now.
According to sources, Edgefield County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece
(D-Johnston) and Vice-chairman Willie Bright (D-Trenton), who is also
the Chairman of the Edgefield County Democrat Party, are courting a
Republican candidate to challenge 18-year veteran Probate Court Judge
Robert (Bobby) Peeler, a fellow Democrat.
Who are they courting? None other than Joan Herlong, who ran against
Peeler four years ago and lost in a landside decision. So, we have two
leaders of the local Democrat Party seeking out a failed Republican to
try to unseat a fellow Democrat. I am sure that will sit real well with
the state Democrat Party leaders when they hear about this. And, oops,
they just did.
Moreover, Willie Bright’s mother just passed and he will have to file
her estate in Judge Peeler’s Court.
Nothing that happens in this county will ever surprise me, but this

So some think the good ole boy system in Edgefield County is something.
“You ain’t seen nothing”. Beware! Aiken County has a much bigger,
leaner, meaner monster. A monster the Standard and Chronicle are even
afraid of. One of the driving forces is the leader of the Aiken County
Sheriffs Office. Guess who?
The law, conscience, nor any law abiding citizen, nor his family will
come between a Sheriff and his buddies – I found this out first hand.
Throw in a cranky old Solicitor and a couple of lawyers with a
god complexes, a magistate with no backbone and a yes man investigator
that uses a crucifix on his desk used as a “prop” and you have
everything you need to keep the wheels greased up on the self serving
good ole boy machine. Try to do the right thing? You don’t stand a
chance against this crowd. It would be nice to see these clowns get
some real justice as opposed to the kind they “should” have been
upholding. Just wait’in.
Editor's note: Currently I am following two criminal cases that the
ACSO has refused to follow through on even after repeated calls to
Sheriff Mike Hunt by Edgefield County residents. One which involves
aggravated permanent physical injuries that are being discounted and is
being refused to be investigated. I know of another case involving a
shooting victim that a report was not provided about the incident until
it was pushed by another agency. That would bring the recent list to
three.
I held Sheriff Mike Hunt in high regard in the past, note the word
"past". I know for a fact he has not returned calls about these
incidents and his deputies refuse to follow through on investigations.
If these incidents had taken place in Edgefield County, the suspects
would have already been arrested and charged so nothing out of Aiken

So Mr. “I can tell who need a handicapped
placard and who does not." really? I doubt it. You should work for
orthopedics then since you have all knowing medical knowledge and can
evidently x ray vision. You can tell if a person is handicapped by the
way they look. Exactly what does someone who needs a placard look like?
Ever thought that the reason there aren't enough places is twofold.
ONE. the businesses do not put enough in there are more buggy returns
than handicapped spaces and secondly, the average age of the American
population is older therefore more placards. Remember the baby boom
generation? How old are they now. I understand your are upset over the
lack of spaces, I go through the same thing, there are many days I get
my husband to drive me to the store because he has to let me out up
front if no spaces are available. I will however tell you this; if you
determine that I am not handicapped and harass me at a local store I
will call the police. I think the legislature would have been better
off making law that makes more handicapped spaces available. My point
was that is this abused, yes, like everything else in the world and
putting someone's picture isn't going to stop it, It only works if a
police sees a placard and the person. Now they want them patrolling for
handicapped parking abuse? I would think they would have more pressing
issues .Again, I still say it’s a HIPPA issue and this is something
that didn't cost the State of SC one dime, now it will. Way to go
Senator Massey how is this looking out for the taxpayers of your
district or are you to busy running for the US House you have forgot
who you currently serve? I'm sure there are other issues that would
better serve the elderly of this state rather than placing a picture on
a PUBLIC placard this is an invasion of my privacy. Sen. Massey still
hasn't answered how much this is costing the taxpayers and why it is
not a HIPPA violation and did he vote for it. It slipped through
without anyone knowing about the bill. I didn’t until it was passed and

Editor's post: The Edgefield Political Machine is kicking into high gear trying to save
its power in the upcoming county council elections. One potential
candidate actually told me today that "if" he ran and won (District 2),
Edgefield would control three seats on the county council.
Humm.. that would change things how?
Monroe Kneece (who does what ever Bettis Rainsford tells him to do as
far as I can tell), is not expected to seek re-election. At 82 and in
bad health, I think he will step down (an episode in Aiken County
wouldn't help if it became public before the election either). Right
now it looks like there will be two going after that seat, one democrat
and one republican. There is a possible independent candidate, but I
don't give that option much of a chance. An independent would only draw
votes away from the republican - and since democrats, who historically
do not vote in off year elections, could come out on top as a result.
He would better serve the county by stepping aside.
Norman Dorn, who is as old as the light bulb, will see two possibly
filing to seek to unseat him, one republican and one democrat.
Willie Bright will see a challenge on the democrat ticket.
The Edgefield Political Machine is in full panic mode. Any one seat
taken over by the people in outlying areas would cut off their control
of the county.
That wouldn't sit well with Boss Hawg and Piglet, to use a readers
description of the power base.
One positive, the Dist. 2 "possible" candidate said he would support
non-partisan elections for county council. I could not agree more.
Maybe that should be on the ballot as a referendum in this year's
elections. I wonder if anyone on the county council now has the
"intestinal fortitude" to make that motion.
Watch the Democrat majority of the County Council block that from ever
being a reality if it was made. Funny, Democrats control a county that
votes overwhelmingly Republican. Go figure.
On another note: I did check on the tax situation of the Calliham
Building. J.P. Calliham never paid his 2008 taxes, but his cousin did
when he bought the property in March. Of course, holding true to family
tradition, he did not pay the taxes that lead the the tax sale
Edgefield County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece stopped from taking
place. So the county taxpayers will now get to pay the 2009 taxes for
him, plus a nearly $300,00 profit on the purchase.
It must be nice to be connected to the Edgefield "inner circle".

Important Bills On The Calendar for the SC
Senate......
10th Amendment Resolution: On special order. Being used by Senator
Hutto to block numerous other bills currently on the calendar.
Point of Sale: On special order. We cannot get to it until we pass the
10th Amendment resolution.
Fees, Fines, Penalties Bill: Senator Davis’ bill stops state agencies,
departments, or other entities from raising fees, fines, or penalties
without the approval of the General Assembly. It’s currently being
blocked by the Democrats.
24-Hour Waiting Period: This bill makes women wait 24 hours before
terminating the life of an unborn child. It too is being blocked by the
Democrats with a minority report.
Anti-Card Check: Secures South Carolina’s strong right-to-work status,
which helped bring Boeing to our state, by guaranteeing that workers
have the right to a secret ballot when voting on whether or not to
unionize. It’s being blocked by the Democrats.
Voter ID: It’s nearly unbelievable, but you can currently vote for our
government leaders without having to show you’re ID. This bill requires
the presentation of an ID when voting, which will obviously deter voter
fraud in South Carolina. Big surprise… it’s being blocked by the
Democrats.

He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the

I also had a conversation this weekend

answer to; if the Calliham property was sold on the court house steps,
why are there still unpaid taxes on the books that County Council
Chairman Monroe Kneece had the property removed from
the recent tax sale? The property was sold for $50,000 in March, so
the taxes would have been paid at the time of transfer of ownership.
Since when does the unpaid taxes get to go unpaid until the county buys
the property? That just sounds a bit fishy, if not illegal, in my
humble opinion.

Thank you Jerry Pugh. Your rebuttal
of Tim
Bledsoe's letter was excellent. Mr. Bledsoe obviously needs to read
the Constitution and gain further knowledge as to what is expected of
his government. His past letters to the media have all exhibited a
slant toward an all- encompassing government that would raise us from
cradle to grave. If he would care to research for himself, he
would see that we are not entitled to health-care, housing,
transportation, food, or any of the other things he thinks the
government is supposed to provide. Our Constitution provides for
individuals to have the opportunity to use their God-given talents to
succeed. We should laud those of us that are successful, not tear them
down with envy. There are safety nets for people like Mr. Bledsoe, that

the state government thought it so important that they had to issue new
handicapped placards - to deter abuse. REally? Thats a major state
issue. exactly how much is this "abuse" costing the taxpayers? Is it
right, no but ever heard the saying "You can't judge a book by it's
cover ?" well it fits, I have a handicpped placard, I use it and I get
comments and stares, People see a middle aged person getting out of a
car and walking into a store unaided. What they dont see are the
twenty plus scars from numerous surgeries or the "zipper" from heart
surgery or the numerous breathing treatment I do every day. Some days
are better than others, but my lungs are right at the edge for needing
supplemental oxygen. there are days I use a power chair. other days are
good. Now they are spending our tax dollars to print new placards with
pictures, how much is this costing us,. Sen Massey won't answer, I've
asked. Why was this such an issue that it has to be passed now. I say
its a HIPPA violation. you are putting a picture so someone can look at
a placard recognize the person it is issue to and know that they have a
medical disability. If I wanted you to know, I'd tell you. otherwise
its my buisness. It has to be costing us more money, for ink, the
technology, the new placards. For something that had no direct economic
impact on the State. so again Sen Massey, WHY was this so important and
how much is this costing the taxpayers of SC to implement.

A (supposedly) TRUE STORY HEARD ON A
WISCONSIN RADIO STATION REPORTING ON THE INCIDENT.
A guy buys a new Lincoln Navigator for $42,500.00 (with monthly
payments of $860.00).
He and a friend go duck hunting in upper Wisconsin It's mid-winter; and
of course all of the lakes are frozen. These two guys go out on
the ice with their GUNS, a DOG, and of course the new NAVIGATOR.
They decide they want to make a natural looking open water for the
ducks to focus on, something for the decoys to float in. Now making a
hole in the ice large enough to invite a passing duck, is going to take
a little more power than the average drill auger can produce. So, out
of the back of the new Navigator comes a stick of dynamite with a short
40 second-fuse. Now our two Rocket Scientists, afraid they might slip
on the ice while trying to run away after lighting the fuse (and
becoming toast, along with the Navigator), decide on the following
course of action:
They light the 40 second fuse; then, with a mighty thrust, they throw
the
stick of dynamite as far away as possible. Remember a couple of
paragraphs back when I mentioned the NAVIGATOR, The GUNS, and the
DOG...???
Let's talk about the dog: A highly trained Black Lab used for
RETRIEVING; especially things thrown by the owner. You guessed it: The
dog takes off across the ice at a high rate of speed and grabs the
stick of dynamite, with the burning 40-second fuse, just as it hits the
ice.
The two men swallow, blink, start waving their arms and, with veins in
their necks swelling to resemble stalks of rhubarb, scream and holler
at the dog to stop. The dog, now apparently cheered on by his Master,
keeps coming. One hunter panics, grabs the shotgun and shoots the dog.
The shotgun is loaded with #8 bird shot, hardly big enough to stop a
Black Lab.
The dog stops for a moment, slightly confused, then continues on.
Another shot, and this time the dog, still standing, becomes really
confused and of course terrified, thinks these two geniuses have gone
insane. The dog takes off to find cover, UNDER the brand new Navigator
The men continue to scream as they run. The red hot exhaust pipe
on the truck touches the dog's rear end, he yelps, drops the dynamite
under the truck and takes off after his master.
! Then " "" "" "" "" BOOOOOOOOOOOOM "" "" "" "" ! ! !
The truck is blown to bits and sinks to the bottom of the lake, leaving
the two idiots standing there with "I can't believe this just happened"
looks on their faces.
The insurance company says that sinking a vehicle in a lake by Illegal
use of explosives is NOT COVERED by the policy. And he still had yet to
make the first of those $860.00 a month payments.
The dog is okay . .doing fine.
And you thought Rednecks only live in the South.........
Editor's note: Rednecks don't live up north (or out west), liberals do.
That's why they vote for Democrats. Insert the following to support
that hypothesis. Hunters (Reid and Obama), dog (Pelosi), the Navigator
(the US on thin ice), the dynamite (liberal policy) and see if it
doesn't seem very similar to what is taking place now. Just a thought
that came to mind.

Recently, everyone is concerned about the
Calliham building and the Mount Vintage property. But there are
more pressing issues than condemned buildings. We have a
very serious problem in this county with a shortage of ambulance
personnel and the shortage of ambulance stations. Just before Christmas
I had a dear old family member fall and injure her head. She was
able to call another family member and they in turn called EMS.
To her surprise they were told all units were busy and they would call
McCormick for backup. The injured party lives in the heart of
Edgefield City Limits. And a unit had to come from McCormick.
What a joke? This is not the first incident.
Halloween an incident occured with a little child out in the county
(off 191 and airport road) he had injured his leg and Dispatch said
they would call Saluda County EMS. We need more EMS or
first responders in Edgefield County.
There needs to be an ambulance in several locations parked in the
county for emergencys. If Saluda County can have a unit on
standby parked in Ridge Spring why can't Edgefield county have
units in different locations? What is the county
council's priority list? Just wait until something happens to a friend
or family member if yours and Dispatch tells you we will send EMS from
Greenwood or Aiken to respond and you live in the heart of
Johnston. Sit and wait on it.

could provide another ambulance crew 24/7.

You must be fairly new to the area. You have not yet learned the

it just makes mount vintage's problems seems worse than they are and
nothing will come of it. Some in Edgefield, though the county gets a
good part of their tax base from mount vintage and chairman Kneece can
brag about the increase in the county funds) resent this neighborhood
and the northerners that have invaded their space. A lot of their
hunting ground is now gone. People are getting what they deserve by
buying in a place owned by this man. For the most part, there is no
sympathy in Edgefield for mount vintage-some gloating but no sympathy.
These are the kinds of things we have heard from the residents of
Edgefield. What they don't know is that most of the residents of mount
vintage come from more civilized areas where these kinds of things are
not the common rule. Folks here are used to the "system". Things

I took a lot of flack several months ago
when the County Council was considering the budget. After a Council
meeting where someone suggested we could give up a few cheeseburgers to
continue paying for some perks. I wrote in to Wandering Minds. I
suggested that the perks and benefits of County employees, such as free
insurance, be on the table for reconsideration. Nothing against the
employees I just felt with the economy faltering the county budget
would soon come to suffer more than most wanted to realize. I will not
go into it here today but I have sat in on Council meetings and saw
money given away unnecessarily. I also felt all tax dollars should be
vigilantly accounted for and only spent as required to support the
taxpayers and infrastructure of Edgefield County.
So it was with interest I read that Council members see revenue loss,
tax appeal losses, etc… Budget issues cannot continue to be solved by
increasing tax burdens. Council, don’t you realize that it is tough all
over? You can only spend what you make. There is plenty of money to be
saved in our own councils budget, much less state and federal budgets.
I believe our council has more control over their budget than the
state/ federal governments. The mentality of government officials must
change from the smallest town councils to the U. S. Capitol. Until we
impose term limits on all elected officials and kick professional/ self
serving politicians out of our government there will continue to be
increases in our taxes and governments fiscal debt. Our infrastructure
and education will continue to deteriorate. Our country will become
weak. Terror attacks will not only increase from overseas, but will
come more often from our own citizens. Our countrymen will become irate
with the country’s condition and its government. The country will fall
one way or another. Think you are safe. What about our kids and
grandkids?
I would not want to be shouldered with the burden that I had been
elected to a position of utmost responsibility by the citizens of this
county, state or country and so mismanaged the trust of the citizens
and their tax dollars that I was ultimately responsible for the failure
of this country and the suffering of future generations. And before you
ask me “what can you do for your country?”/ and stop complaining,
tell me how/ help me to defeat Mr. Dorn and I will be glad to be your
new councilman.
Editor's note: This is the year to unseat Dorn, the most polarizing
member of the county council. It is an off year election and his
support is low. The mistake would be for multiple candidates to file on
the Republican ticket. Defeating him will have to come by one candidate
on the Republican ticket and a candidate on the Democrat ticket that
would allow Republicans to swap over to vote in the Democrat Primary
and thus unseating Dorn. Voters could then choose between the two
remaining candidates.

may end up with the same kinda change the rest of the country wished
for. With Dandy Andy you'll get a fool that, when the school
board was in, and still is, financial dire straits, this idiot motions
to spend school budget money on upgrading the concession and bathroom
facilities at Thurmond so we wouldn't look too bad to our
competitors. What an idiot. Hmmm. New toilets or a
Teacher's job. Hmmmm. I think I'll take the toilets.
Leave it to Dandy Andy. Hey JOHNSTON-you want Andy, take
him! We're cuttin the deadwood from Egdefield politics to include
the school board.

The North has Bloomingdale's, the South has Dollar General.
The North has coffee houses, the South has Waffle Houses.
The North has dating services, the South has family reunions.
The North has switchblade knives; the South has .45's
The North has double last names; the South has double first names.
The North has Indy car races; The South has stock car races.
North has Cream of Wheat , the South has grits.
The North has green salads, the South has collard greens.
The North has lobsters, the South has crawfish.
The North has the rust belt; the South has the Bible Belt.

There are some times I question the
affinity of "comments" by the "readers" of EdgefieldDaily.com's
Wandering Minds section, and the editor. Some of the praising
comments seem to have been cooked, in Microsoft Word, by the Editor
himself.
Editor's note: Yes, after working 18 hours a day gathering news I have
nothing better to do than make up comments for the Wandering Minds
about subjects I have no information about. Do yourself a favor, throw
out the Bettis Rainsford and Edgefield clan mantra and playbook and
enter the real world. I guess you can continue to drink the Kool-Aid
given to you by your leaders. They never refute the facts reported,
just bad-mouth those reporting them.

You keep saying good things about the new (county)
administrator. Do you know something we don’t? Do you know him? Is
that why you praise him? I’ve heard a rumor you are related to him and
that’s why. Come clean will ya?
Editor’s note: I, nor any member of my extended family, is remotely
related to him. I have never met Alton Brown and would not know him if
he was sitting next to me at the lunch counter. However, having looked
into all the candidates for the position when they were announced, I
know a great deal about his past and his previous jobs. I like what I
see. In the 48 years of my life, this is the first time the county has
hired a trained professional for the job from outside the county with
no political or personal connections to the good old boys in Edgefield
County.
That can only be a good thing.

We've seen this scene before. The
incumbent administration's populist plans can't possibly work, because
government bankrupts everything it touches. History teaches us that
Obama Care and unfunded entitlement programs will most likely be utter,
complete disasters.
Those in power in our government are guilty of more than ignoring
history; they are enslaving future generations to poverty and misery.
And they will be long gone when it all implodes.

I have a rant about the new “go out cigs”
that they are selling in stores now under a new law. The government
raised taxes on cigs by almost $1 a pack and now they push a law that
says the cigs have to have a chemical that makes them go out if you
don’t puff on them constantly. So……. You have to puff on them three or
four times to be able to smoke them and it makes the cigs burn up
faster forcing you to waste half the cig to smoke it. So we have to
smoke more and that make us pay more taxes for smoking. Obama just
raised my taxes bigtime and I’m not even lower middle class and he
promised to cut my taxes! LIAR!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for adding chemicals to
the cigs I smoke.
Editor's note: You believed something Obama said? That's rich.

Amen to the handicap parking
passes having a picture on them. I drive my mother around to the
store, town hall, and the town square to do shopping and go to the
courthouse. I can’t tell you how many times we can’t find a parking
place and have to park way down the street. I’ve seen young people come
out and get in a car parked in a handicap space with nothing wrong and
drive away. That’s just wrong! They should be arrested. But if you call
police they are already gone and they don’t do anything because they
didn’t see it happen. Well that’s about to change and I will be
watching! If I have to block them in to call the police I WILL!!!!!!!
It’s about time something gets done about these sorry (removed) people
taking up spaces they got no business parking in in the first
place!!!!!!!

I was looking at the county tax rolls and
the taxes on the Calliham property still haven’t been paid. Why didn’t
the property go up for sale and how can the county buy it if the taxes
haven’t been paid?
Editor’s note: In a nutshell, Edgefield County Council Chairman Monroe
Kneece had the property removed (illegally in my personal opinion) from
the tax sale. We, the taxpayers, will end up paying the past due taxes
for Mr. Calliham, who does not own the building since it was foreclosed
on and bought by his cousin in Greenwood. In addition, Mr. Calliham
will continue to operate his business without paying any future
property taxes (with no rent to boot) because the building will be
removed from the tax base once the county owns it.
Don’t forget the $1.1 to $1.3 million the county is going to go into
the hole for renovations County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece refuses
to admit. If you ask him about the costs he will attack you for using
the costs he supplied.
I will be shocked if the deal goes through without a legal challenge to
the purchase.

enough for your standards! AND! Just to let you know, they still block

Editor's post: 2010 is here and with it comes many
changes. Candidates are lining up to challenge County Council Chairman
Monroe Kneece, Vice chairman Willie Bright, and the embarrassment of
District 1, Norman Dorn. A turnover of any one of these seats could
spell huge changes in Edgefield County politics from the old guard that
has ruled Edgefield County for the past 20 years, much to our
detriment, to new leadership that has the best interest of our county
over the chosen few who wish to continue to rule over the strangulation
of progress to benefit one or two people over the entire county.
Couple that with a new county
administrator
from outside the county and we may be on the move for real progress.
What 2010 holds remains to be seen, but from my standpoint it looks
promising. Let's hope we can move forward rather than stand in the
status quo.

If you are ever in doubt as to the
significance of your paper, then let me numbly attempt to express my
utter disappointment with your lack of postings through the holidays.
It is with humble heart that I have to submit a rave upon you
since I not only admire, but respect your services, but the lack of
these service across the holiday season has left an empty hole in my
day which can only be filled by your updates.
To many of the ..... left blank to assist you... people of this county,
It will appear as if you have spent your holiday funding to purchase
this post, or worse, that you posted it yourself, but let me assure all
that I am not you nor you. I follow your paper on a daily basis and I
check randomly though the day to be assured that you haven't posted
Breaking News: available only though this medium.
I understand completely the needed and want for family time and only
wish that circumstances would allow you a compete assistant staff to
carry on the great nature of you service.

I've been reading a biography of Samuel
Adams, and I came across a quote that made me think of you. At
one point in 1768 when the British governor of Massachusetts was after
Adams for some of the articles he'd written, he responded with a letter
that included this quote: "There is nothing so fretting and vexatious,
nothing so justly terrible to tyrants, and their tools and abettors, as
a free press."
Editor's note: Funny how things never change in the political class
ruling over the citizens.

away with the old ads and make them easy to be printed without the ads?
Editor's note: All pages are created at the time they are published.
Those advertising support that publication and their ads are listed
with those articles. We are working to update the County Cooking
Section this year and you will see changes in the options available
