My child comes home weekly talking about his teacher not in class again.  His teacher is one of those teachers teaching teachers.  Well who's teaching the kids, other than substitutes and whomever they can put in the class.  His grades reflect it, and I can imagine test scores will also, for the whole class, not just my child.

I think whoever is stealing from the churches needs to stop and repent! Anyone who would do that is the lowest form of scum! I'm sorry I feel that way but I do. As a member of one of the churches I'm supposed to forgive, but I find that hard when they don't care. Maybe that is a sin but it has to be a smaller sin than stealing from God's house.

This is to the person posting someone should "back off" complaining about a "mother daughter team". First off, who the (heck) are you to tell others to "back off" when nobody mentioned any names. Hummmm seems it hit close to home with the Edgefield clan. I have no idea who this "mother daughter" team is but obviously you do so I guess it must be well known in the inside click. The hit dog barks first. Guess that's you!

RE:"Aha! So there are food fights. Do you want to go ahead and substantiate that a teacher had her hair set on fire? Was that not important enough to write a report?"

Well, just wait.  Wait until that pillar of society, that stellar mentor, Nathaniel Jackson, gets elected to sit on the school board and really insures discipline is instilled in the system.  Just wait.  If the malcontents and thugs are running the asylum now, wait until they are emboldened by the election of a "brother", and that's not the term of endearment meaning a black man, that's meaning a brother thug and racist.  He'll teach them how to get away with their actions playing the race card and soliciting help from the NAACLP.  You think the schools are in peril now?

I have posted before about the continued debate over ECSD patrol cars. At times vehicles must be replaced but, generally, I do not agree with replacing county vehicles based on mileage/ age alone. Nor do I agree with, or understand, the lengths that some are allowed to go to make unnecessary upgrades to their fleet. These are not luxury vehicles, technology toys or taxis. They are utility vehicles, therefore should be utilized to perform a service for the people of the county. They do not need to put on spectacular light and sound shows. They do not need to have four hundred horsepower engines. They do not need to be covered with dazzling, complex graphics, etc…

Example: Aiken County. Recently I came upon Mr. AC Sheriff and a deputy, both with blue lights blazing, stooped over a fellow against a fence that was likely a fairly harmless, unfortunate transient. Maybe the poor guy was a tough case and required backup. Maybe he had “offended” one of Mr. Sheriff’s friends and was getting double teamed. Maybe he could have done something wrong – I mean really, truly wrong – not just Mr. Sheriff wrong. However, I am fully, and unfortunately, aware of just how just Mr. Sheriff and some of his posse are. So I am skeptical. Festus was in a regular old patrol wagon. But Mr. Sheriff? He was driving a fairly new, big ole four door, four wheel drive truck that was putting on some light show. I cannot recall where on the truck something wasn’t flashing. He was even tricked out with one of those fancy, mesmerizing “Nightrider” lights in the grill of the truck. Wow! Tinted windows. No graphics of notice of course. Not to cool for Mr. Sheriff to show up at one of his buddy’s’ “crazy” parties and remind all of the “law abiding” citizens there of what he is supposed to represent – integrity and justice. Maybe he does a lot of undercover work? Who knows what surprises the interior held? Hope the door locks worked. Wouldn’t want an amateur crook getting their hands on any of Mr. Sheriffs WMD would we?

Think Mr. Sheriff needs that big ole truck to provide the service he was elected and is responsible for? Are the people that live in Aiken County so happy to pitch in to get Mr. Sheriff his many toys? He must be a swell guy! Just how many fancy lights does it take to catch a crook? (No this isn’t a polish joke!). How much horsepower is needed? How many decals? How many four wheelers, ATVs and UTVs? How many hands must you have in the taxpayers’ pockets?

Let’s not use the guys in Aiken County as an example. We have a fairly humble, practical and effective law enforcement organization in Edgefield County considering our population. It’s run by some pretty good folks. Let’s not let it or the remainder of our county government get out of hand. Let’s make some practical, honest choices with at least a dash of integrity. We taxpayers couldn’t ask for more.

Saw in the paper today where SC is trying to exempt our state from the Fed law to do away with incandescent lights.  We actually have a plant in Mullins that makes these bulbs.  Thanks to our congress - China will soon be the only country that makes them.    You have to see this to believe it.

And that's just the way it is.

CATTLE GUARDS, THIS IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS THEM WANTING TO CHANGE THE LAW OF PHYSICS!

You will love this one, I haven't stop laughing yet.

For those of you who have never traveled to the west, or southwest, cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings, in dug-out places in the roads adjacent to highways (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle from crossing over that area.  For some reason the cattle will not step on the "guards," probably because they fear getting their feet caught between the rails.

A few months ago, President Obama received and was reading a report that there were over 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado .  The Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the "cattle" guards immediately!

Before the Secretary of the Interior could respond and presumably try to straighten President Obama out on the matter, Vice-President Joe Biden, intervened with a request that...before any "cattle" guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining for Arizona border guards.  'Times are hard', said Joe Biden, 'it's only fair to the cattle guards and their families!'

And these two guys are running our country, OMG!

A bill has been introduced to enact the "South Carolina Restructuring Act of 2011." On the surface, this sounds like a great idea with an ostensible goal to streamline government administration and put into the Executive Branch more authorities for governance. The SCRA would "transfer to and incorporate into" a number of offices to create the Department of Administration, "a department of the executive branch of state government headed by a director appointed by the Governor."

Aha! So there are food fights. Do you want to go ahead and substantiate that a teacher had her hair set on fire? Was that not important enough to write a report? Go ahead and admit that the food fights have advanced to pupils throwing solid objects in the classroom. What about the scalpels that were stolen from the science lab? Why are you so adamant about downplaying the lack of discipline at school? Do you condone social deviation and disobedience? I believe that if all of the parents knew what is going on they would demand that their children behave, but the administrators try to keep the discipline documentation to a minimum because it makes them look like they cannot or will not do their jobs. Come back to reality boys! What is written down on some spread sheet isn't worth a hill of beans when your students are out of control. Test scores and graduation rates are not worth the trade-off for morals and values. Get your priorties in order. So what if you are in the upper ten percent of the lowest ranking state in the country?Everyone will apprceiate you if you turn out good solid dependable citizens. You show them about discipline and respect now and they will thank you for it later.

RE: ADHD

ADHD is a very real condition. You shouldn't judge those whom shoes you have never worn. My child has been diagnosed with this condition and has maintained honor roll status the entire time he has been in school. There will always be those who are quick to blame and find any excuse for their child's bad behavior. What is sad is that this does not apply to all. It has been very difficult making decisions and trying to figure out what is the best treatment for a child that is truly in need.

Old Sea Story Parable

There's an old sea story about a ship's Captain who inspected his sailors, and afterward told the first mate that his men smelled bad.

The Captain suggested perhaps it would help if the sailors would change underwear occasionally.

The first mate responded, "Aye, aye sir, I'll see to it immediately!"

The first mate went straight to the sailors berth deck and announced, "The Captain thinks you guys smell bad and wants you to change your underwear."

He continued, " Leo you change with Jerry, Tony you change with Bert and Bob you change with Ed."

THE MORAL OF THE STORY:
Someone may come along and promise "Change", but don't count on things smelling any better.

(Below are a few of the comments sent in concerning the death of Carl Langley)

It was sad to hear Mr. Langley died. I always enjoyed reading his writings. I disagreed with him sometimes but he always made great points and made me think. Prayers to his family.

I loved reading Carl Langley's columns. I know you said he was taking time off for an illness, I never knew it was that bad. I would write him an email from time to time when something he said rubbed me the wrong way or I had questions and he was always very nice.

Rest in Pease Carl. The world was a better place with you here.

I met Carl in 2003 and considered him a friend. I hope and believe he counted me as one. He spoke of you (the editor) with admiration for what you were doing in Edgefield County and encouraged many in Aiken to read EdgefieldDaily.com. That says a lot about you. The article on his passing was a fitting tribute to a man of his stature and prominence. May God rest his soul and may His hand be upon his family as they deal with the loss of a truly great man.

B.S. There was never a food fight in any public school I attended. Had there been the principal and the MEN teachers would have corralled the culprits and tagged their behinds. Then double jeapordy would have been imposed when the Daddy's at home found out. I agree the emphasis should be put on the good events happening at the school, but there is a trend of disobedience that is getting out of control. No one can study and learn in an environment where thugs and brats are causing constant commotion. This is an urgent time when grown ups need to pull together no matter what their skin color is and demand that order and respect return to the classroom. Are you opposed to that or are you opposed to anything that is normal and rational. Or, maybe you are one of the fat boys sitting on your back side and watching the show. and cashing that check. Throw me that piece of cake, Buddy!

Hey “mare” Andy, why did the town raise the franchise fees on the crappy cable service? My fee went from $ 3.85 to $ 4.15. Are you that desperate for a few pennies more to supplement the free service the town gets? Or is it because, people who do work on their place have gotten around the law that says you need a permit so you are losing revenue over that. Oh, by the way, I will be cutting my grass by next week, should I get a permit for that also??

Did it ever occur to you to once in a while, drive around the town to see what messes people have on their property. This town is really going down the tubes!

Thats great you would nail he who reports the the wrongs of others to the wall and not he who does the wrong.  "He that troubles his own house" clearly refers to situations that the editor and those who write into the wandering minds are reporting about.  What you propose is for the editor to lay quiet like the local papers about these things which need fixing.  If it is hurting the community then hold those who are doing wrong responsible, not those who wish to expose it.  When an injury is infected does the Doctor simply cover it up so that it cannot be seen?  To the protest of the patient, the Doctor may decide to pour alcohol on the wound.  This is not the most comfortable feeling and the patient may scream out.  As the editor and those who have the gumption allow alcohol to be applied to the wounds of Edgefield County there will be protest.  You are simply one of those who can't handle the pain and would rather the Doctor "cover the wound" which would eventually result in the rotting of the limb.  I guess you believe that the leaders of said industry are idiots.  You would kick around the legitimacy of edgefielddaily and call it immaterial because you know better and somehow these leaders of industry don't know as much as you do.  You simply wish to levy the lack of industry coming here against the truthful work of a community reporter.  That is a sad reality that you must recognize as you are a false prophet.  Bring on the disinfectant and sunshine.

Re: ADHD

I hate to bust your bubble, but the concept behind ADHD learning in school and video games is irrelevant…. Just hear me out… My son has ADHD along with a few other problems.. he learns JUST FINE… I never use it as an excuse… and he does not know he has a problem… he thinks his medicine is a vitamin like flinstones.. and that he is growing to be a big boy.. I choose to not tell my son, and the school backs me on my decision.. I don’t want  him to think he is different or use his diagnosis as a reason to misbehave.. my son loses the attention of the teacher when not doing a “hands o n activity”… he has to be active..if not.. he loses focus..when this happens, usually asking him a question or to do a task will get him back on track..this is where video games come in.. your hands are constantly moving while playing a video game, your eyes are moving and you are constantly challenged to figure out your next move.. in class, this is not always the case. So comparing the two.. well, I personally think its wrong. To me.. its up to the parents to help the children. Many children are taught that they have a problem so its ok to : misbehave, get bad grades, etc. That’s where the real problem is… if you give a child/parent an excuse… they are going to use it.

I was born in Edgefield, and I have work in Edgefield, in other count in this state and some of the other States in this grate nation.
And I have visited many city in this country, but I love Edgefield, S.C.
I read your news when I get a chance, some I like and some I dislike.
Forgive me if I am wrong about you, but it seem to me that you don't like Edgefield.
You complaint about the stores closing and the town drying up. I commend the few business that is holding on and trying to encourage people to shop at home. But if ou want the town and the county to grow we must encourage everyoen to come and shop at home.
1. If this news press stop being so derogatory toward negro (black) and poor people and start having love in your heart for mankind, then this town and county will grow and prosper. If you can get black and poor people to start coming to town then, merchants can capture their dollars.
2. If you stop complaining about everything that the school administration and teachers are doing, and start writing about the good, then we will have a better school system.
3. If you will stop complaining, and bellyaching about everyone that run our movement then maybe we can get some industrial minded people to look at Edgefield and set up shop hear. Read the Holy Bible, Proverb 11:29 He that trouble his own house shall inherit the wind.
Mr. news man strive for healing, communication, and understanding, then we will grow together. Remember, while you are trying to pull me down, I am still on top of you.

Editor's note: I love Edgefield County - it is my homeland. I grew up in Trenton and my wife in Merriwether. This is my home. As such, I want it to be the best it can be. We can disagree on how that is accomplished, but never challenge my love and devotion to this county.

Foodfights: these have been going on forever. Many feel that they are a tradition. They are glorified by TV and movies. Law enforcement does not waste their time to do a report on a food fight. I asked and I could not find any teacher who got hurt.

ADHD and the like: These conditions have been around forever. They just did not know what it was. Is it over diagnosed, probably. Just like special education; too quickly children are place with these labels.

btw educators: Florida just got merit pay signed into law for their teachers.

Well isn't that convenient.  If it was distributed by the district it should be on a computer.  However, you are at least lucky they responded to the Freedom of Information Act requests.  They typically think they're above the law and ignore them.

Ask your school board member to request the document.  By the way, you better watch out, they may file a suit against you for defamation like they did against Jackson, Kemp, and Brown.  You're not supposed to question anything they do.  BE CAREFUL!

Oh, and it was interesting on O'Reilly the other night when someone asked a question about web sites and posts made trashing other students.  O'Reilly said they could probably sue for slander, but it is extremely difficult and would be very expensive.  Guess O'Reilly hasn't talked to the Superintendent.  Oooops! Have you ever known a teacher? Obviously not because you are totally ignorant about what's going on inside the ECS. When students are threatening and attacking teachers it becomes a civil and legal matter. Only problem is that it is the administrators who are too chicken to step up and take control. They know that they are either a duck out of water or incompetent for the job. There is no nurturing and training children going on it is more like when the lights go out duck because the food will come flying. See for yourself. Be a substitute for a while and you will see that the inmates are running the asylum. As far as this editor goes: he really put his ignorance on display when he came up with practical solutions for complicated problems. He too should spend some time in the food wars and texting game. So don't come around talking trash like you no something when you are probably a source of the problem.

This flyer was the original announcement about formation of the Eagle Leadership Academy for school year 2010-2011 . It stated that all kids even those not selected for the academy would receive the same quality of education as those selected. It said that application were being accepted until June and were available in at JET Middle School Office.

I have submitted a Three Freedom of Information requests to the school district, however, they were unable to locate the document. Since Edgefield Daily has done a story on the announcement of the leadership academy date May 13th, I was hoping maybe one of your readers might have a copy of this document. As a high school teacher, I can relate to almost everything the elementary teacher says. However, on the high school level, the class would probably have 30-35 in a class. The non-English speaking students would be there, the behavior problems, etc. would be there. Along with all the work the teacher must prepare to keep the class busy and interested, now she must also jump through hoops because of new programs and evaluations because teachers must teach teachers to teach. She may also work for a principal who does not believe that teachers have family responsibilites outside of school. The editor's approach may have worked thirty years ago, but it won't work now.  Mainstreaming allows all levels of students to be in the same classroom and some studies have shown there are some benefits to that. It is possible to have a student removed from class in extreme situations, but usually that student is back in class the next time. Sometimes a teacher is the only one teaching a particular subject, so the student is put back in with the same group. ADHD is NOT a made up condition. Yes, too many children are put under the classification, but some need medication and they are very intelligent, not lazy. Finally, the remaining students may be quiet and well behaved. Sometimes they are there to learn. Many times they are there to sleep, to text, to obtain drugs, etc.  What happened to the drug dog who used to come regularly? The editor's solution may sound good, but it wouldn't be allowed today. He and most parents would benefit from a week's worth of substituting!

RE: " Next Season on Survivor.  Have you heard about the next planned "Survivor" show?"

I strongly agree with the Editor's response.  Instead of this teacher or administrator being proactive and standing up to do the right thing, they whine about how hard it is to be a teacher.  The Editor missed one though.  Whoever wrote the post should not let the door hit them in the @$$ on the way out.  Allow someone else who WANTS to be a teacher take that position.

Wha, wha, wha.  You know what it takes to be a teacher going in, so you have assumed your responsibilities.  Now you just sit there and whine about all that you have to do.  That would be like a soldier who volunteers to serve his/her country to start whining about having to go to one of the hot spots in the world.  Instead he/she accept what they have chosen to pursue as a career/job and drive on.  They adapt, improvise, and overcome.  They make things happen. And for what they do, as a taxpayer, I would rather half a teachers salary and quarter a teachers benefits and give our soldiers a raise.  They are far more under paid than a teacher.   Teachers should stand up and change their own system if they don't like all the stupid bureaucratic requirements, and stupid rules, regulations and policies.  But do they?  Nooooooo.  But you tell them you are going to cut jobs or cut benefits and boy do they stand up then.

You had a few citizens stand up and give you a voice.  You had sources beginning to come forward and provide further voice.  But did you do anything to help.  Nope.  Like a majority of the teachers, you coward in a corner somewhere afraid to speak up, afraid you might lose your job, afraid your contract wouldn't be renewed, afraid you would lose your pay and precious benefits. You reap what you sow.  I am (removed) glad our soldiers didn't learn too much from our teachers when they were attending public schools.

Re Complaining about Post Office:

Now I know why the numbers or in the box, if the mail people are like you and can’t spell or write, BINGO, there’s the problem. Funny isn’t it that the emergency services in the county have no problems with numbers at the street near the mail box, and yes, even though the number is in my box, and also a sticker with the bar code, and my house number is on the post of the mail box, the dummy still gets the mail screwed up. And you people in Johnston wonder why Jackson got all those votes!!!

Editor's post: At least three more break-ins or thefts of metal from county homes were reported on Wednesday. Official reports were not available for today's reports. It is only going to get worse before it gets better. On the bright side, Sheriff's Deputies cars are breaking down, there are too few to cover the county, but we can overpay to make sure little Johnny and Betty Sue can have a ball to kick around. Don't forget that the road crew can use money from a special tax to repair our roads ($20 Road Maintenance Fee per car) to move bleachers for a private church to hold functions at their "northside park" where no county recreation takes place, trim shrubbery (don't we pay someone already for that?), and other nonsense rather than use the money for what it is taxed . Nice to know our county leaders have their priorities in order.

My daughter and grandson lives there because I can't afford to help her anymore than I do already and every time I go to visit there are people standing around smoking dope and selling it right out in the open? If I can see this I know they can see it if they wanted to. Its not just the blacks its whites too. I'm trying my best to find her another place to live but she's got a lease and they won't let her out until it is up. Section 8 won't help either. I told them that its unsafe for her and my grandson but they don't care. If there is anything you or anyones else can do to help please do.

If johnston hired a new carrier I guess you expect them to know every address on the route the first day. Do you realize on some routes there could be up to 1000 addresses with some the only difference being A or B. Have you ever thought maybe they did this to ensure you get proper delivery of the mail. No you wouldn't think about that cause your a "complainer". I bet you will be the first one to complain when you get the wrong mail. As for the barcodes in your box contact the postmaster general because the carriers are told in every city and town in the US whose box gets one of those. Ask him why he choose you!! Next Season on Survivor
Have you heard about the next planned "Survivor" show? Three businessmen and three businesswomen will be dropped in an elementary school classroom for 1 school year. Each business person will be provided with a copy of his/her school district's curriculum, and a class of 20-25 students.
Each class will have a minimum of five learning-disabled children, three with A.D.H.D., one gifted child, and two who speak limited English. Three students will be labeled with severe behavior problems.
Each business person must complete lesson plans at least 3 days in advance with annotations for curriculum objectives and modify, organize, or create their materials accordingly. They will be required to teach students, handle misconduct, implement technology, document attendance, write referrals, correct homework, make bulletin boards, compute grades, complete report cards, document benchmarks, communicate with parents, and arrange parent conferences. They must also stand in their doorway between class changes to monitor the hallways.
In addition, they will complete fire drills, tornado drills, and [Code Red] drills for shooting attacks each month.
They must attend workshops, faculty meetings, and attend curriculum development meetings. They must also tutor students who are behind and strive to get their 2 non-English speaking children proficient enough to take the SOLS tests. If they are sick or having a bad day they must not let it show.
Each day they must incorporate reading, writing, math, science, and social studies into the program. They must maintain discipline and provide an educationally stimulating environment to motivate students at all times. If all students do not wish to cooperate, work, or learn, the teacher will be held responsible.
The business people will only have access to the public golf course on the weekends, but with their new salary, they will not be able to afford it. There will be no access to vendors who want to take them out to lunch, and lunch will be limited to thirty minutes, which is not counted as part of their work day. The business people will be permitted to use a student restroom, as long as another survival candidate can supervise their class.
If the copier is operable, they may make copies of necessary materials before, or after, school. However, they cannot surpass their monthly limit of copies. The business people must continually advance their education, at their expense, and on their own time.
The winner of this Season of Survivor will be allowed to return to their job.

Editor's note: I could eliminate many of the problems. First, those who do not speak English are probably children of illegal aliens and should not be allowed to take advantage of our schools. Mark two off the list.

The students with "severe behavior problems" would be out next after disrupting class. I'd tell the school administrators they can keep them in their office and let them teach them if they wanted to keep them in school. Three more off the list.

The three with "ADHD" are slackers. (You put a child with so-called ADHD in front of a video game and he/she sit there for hours... they don't have the made-up "disease") They can get with the program or sit in the corner facing the wall until they want to learn. If they start any problems, they're out too. Three more off the list.

The five with "learning disabilities" should not be in regular classrooms and should be in remedial classes with those with similar problems. That's five less in the class.

That would leave 12 in the class who want an education. I think I could handle that without a problem. In fact, if every teacher did the same we would need half as many teachers and SAT and ACT test scores would go back to where they were before we had the US Department of Education which was started by liberal Jimmy Carter to make "everybody equal" (yeah, equally uneducated). So, you could eliminate that bureaucracy and save billions of dollars a year.

Problems solved. That's the way it was done in the 60's and early 70's when I was in school. Worked then, why not now?

Merriwether poster with dog problem – I feel your pain. I used to live in the area and had many issues with others dogs. We had a dog also but it was kept in a large kennel unless we were in the yard with it. In addition, seems the “association” found physical yard fences “unappealing”. So eventually we installed an underground fence to allow more freedom. We did all of this out of concern for our pet and respect for our neighbors.

Do not expect others to be concerned about their animals or have any respect for you, your family or property. Unfortunately, many believe that pet ownership is another entitlement that they need not be responsible for. Another disappointment you may face is the lack of assistance you will receive as you try to do something about a legitimate issue you have. You will find some sympathetic ECSD officers that will try to help, but ultimately someone at the courthouse has to take some action. That is not likely going to happen until you jump through many more hoops than you care to. Then the middle ground is often taken which doesn’t solve any issue long-term. So get on your hoop jumping shoes if you are compelled to continue working the system.

Your biggest and most unfortunate challenge, however, may come as you struggle to decide if you must handle things yourself. The irony here is that those who have some compassion for living things and are respectful of those around them have the most difficulty with a decision like this. Those who do not care where their animals go, what they do or who they bother generally have no problem taking matters into their own hands with their neighbors or the neighbors animals.

We moved to a much more rural area and still have unnecessary problems with pets of others. My lesson is almost complete. Good luck to you.

The current attempt to cut the U.S. budget and try to revive our economy is making slow progress with few significant savings. The effort seems to focus on domestic spending; duplicative funding, earmarks, outdated programs, entitlements and items that can otherwise be sacrificed in difficult economic times.

The intricacies of foreign aid are not easy to decipher. In reading the justifications for the funds, you'll find a bushel full of vague reasoning to "promote" this, "enable" that or "encourage" something else. And though many millions of dollars are spent for very good and necessary causes, there are some real curiosities when scanning through government budget proposals.

But who can pass up this headline? Obama: Drill, Brazil, Drill!
Now, with a seven-year offshore drilling ban in effect off of both coasts, on Alaska's continental shelf and in much of the Gulf of Mexico — and a de facto moratorium covering the rest — Obama tells the Brazilians: "We want to help you with the technology and support to develop these oil reserves safely. And when you're ready to start selling, we want to be one of your best customers."

Ah, what a great President. Kill American jobs, American oil, American independence, and support a foreign country to take more of our money and "spreading the wealth" around the world... everywhere but America.

Well, he did say he wanted to "fundamentally change America". How's that working out for you so far?

It's been in place a long time. So not only do we give these children free breakfast, free lunch, free medical care etc. , we pay their mother to have more. It's not the child's fault. The laws need to be changed so people are not encouraged to have more children while on assistance.Instead of hiring people from other countries to come in and pick fruit farmers could work these people and pay back the tax payer. The posts about the lack of looting, etc… in Japan are right on. If that doesn’t shame Americans, what about Libya? Gadhafi deserved his spanking twenty something years ago. Why are we really there now? Where was our government when our fellow Americans were blown to bits over Lockerbie? What about our young men blown to bits in a barracks in the Middle East? The list could go on and on. It is a monumental disgrace that our youngest and brightest get sent to die so often for so less.

I wonder if the “patriots” will ever take their blinders off and see the light. Americas hands are as filthy as any in the world. Has America done some good in the world? Yes. Is a pat on the back always worth a punch in the mouth? Can you deny that we can be so much more than what we are?

What about the “finger pointers”? Those who are ready to crucify anyone that doesn’t fit neatly into their group or belief system “of the day”. Bush + Iraq = Obama + Libya – doesn’t it? I agreed that America had little reason to be in Iraq. But where are the finger pointers now? Is America now justified?

I hold out hope for the “patriots”, but have none for the “bottom feeders”. They don’t care what American does or what happens to Americans. They just want to make sure they get their entitlements and perks, or anything else they need for their comfort. They do not care who they get it from, who they must take it from or how they get it. As far as they are concerned things are just fine. Morality, justice and integrity are of little interest unless they can benefit from them somehow.

I was raised believing that when you knowingly did wrong you got punished. Is America doing the right things? Are we headed in the right direction? I cannot help but believe the United States is due a serious arse cutting for our lack of morality and integrity. I fear it. To many of us focus on the flag or our on personal “needs”, when we all should focus a little more on the Cross. This is not a “doomsday” post and no, I am not anti-American, nor a religious zealot. I want no harm to come to my family, my friends, my fellow decent Americans or this land of ours. I will defend them with my life if I must. But I will not waste a drop of spit for those who seem so determined to drive us and themselves into the ground. Among them included are those who seem gravitate around Washington D. C. and the capitols, county seats and court houses of every state, county and city in the nation, have opportunity to make a difference and do the right thing, and do nothing.

I don't see anything for the kids to do or anything to intertaint the kids, why not remodel the park, put a game room some where on the town square, build a nice gym for the kids, think about the kids. I think it will be less crimes and gang related activity going on. Why not put more restaurants and tables out so people can enjoy the scenery and have more money in our town. I'm no where near rich, i work Monday thru Friday and try to make it. I refuse to get on the system, because i am able to work. I can't see myself taking away from the one's that really need the help, but there are some people who will abuse the system. Young ladies are out here having 3 or more children will sit on home and wait on the Government when i know for a fact that they are able to work, and when the end of the year comes, they are looking for some one to claim their children, when indeed the Government is taking care of them. They walk around with their head held high, with no High School Degree and feel like the World owe them. I'm a mother of 3, work Monday thru Friday and sometimes on Saturday, have a High School Diploma, College Degree and still not making what i should be, but with the help of the lord I'm not complaining or asking for the Government help. With that being said, i hope someone with High Authority will do whats right for our Community.

Proposed Divorce Agreement

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, Socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:
We have stuck together since the late 1950's for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run Its course.

Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let's just end it On friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.

Here is a model separation agreement:
--Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.
--We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them.
--You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU.
--Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military.
--We'll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar and bio-diesel.
--You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell.

You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them.

--We'll keep capitalism, greedy corporations,  pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street.
--You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, food stamps, homeless, homeboys, hippies, druggies and illegal aliens.

I love Japan. I was fortunate to have lived in Tokyo Prefecture for three years and enjoyed just about everything about the country. The current, horrible catastrophe in Japan has affected our family as I’m sure it has others who have experienced this wonderful land. It has us asking questions that might not strike others, so I’m offering here a little bit of information to provide some context to the physical challenges the country is facing.

Residents of Merriwether have a big problem with dogs running loose. Yesterday 2 dogs came onto my property, tore down a fence around my 8 year old child's chicken coop and killed 7 of his chickens.  He has worked very  hard and had much fun gathering eggs. He has learned the responsibility that comes along with owning an animal.  This is more than can be said for some adults.  Just because you live in a rural county does not mean that you can let your animals run free.  Your nice family pet doesn't necessarily behave the same way when it is out rambling with other dogs.  They can become aggressive and destructive. That's just natural in a pack. It is only a matter of time before someone is bitten.

This is also taking away resources from the Sheriff's office that Edgefield County does not have to spare. Deputies are being called every day with dog complaints. I can only hope that one is not on a dog call when something really bad happens and you need them in a hurry.

Owners need to be held accountable for the damage their dogs are causing and for what they are costing the county.  They should also be aware that their dogs can be destroyed if they are on someone else's property.

I'm a little confused about the Town of Edgefield's proposed Hospitality Tax.  Please correct me if I'm wrong but...First, didn't we hear about how Edgefield might face a money shortage because of lack of funds from the state.

Second, we hear that the Hospitality Tax can only be used for tourism purposes.  I thought the original purpose of the tax was to take up the slack from state money for general purposes.

Third, I then remembered in the dark recesses of my little mind...didn't some historical group want $10,000.00 for a seven-minute video about Edgefield?  Now folks, I might have fallen off the turnip truck when I got here, but I didn't hit my head THAT hard.  I can still add...One, plus two, plus three equals "something our editor can't print."

How many businesses are closing? Four?  Didn't the chinese restaurant across from Fairway  and the discount store on Buncombe just close?  How many others?

To paraphrase Gov. Halley..."Just because you got an "R" behind your name doesn't mean you're a conservative."

To our beloved Edgefield Town Council...We're not THAT stupid, we know what you're up to and we know who will get ALL this little pot of money.  Lots of $10,000.00 seven-minute videos and $4,500.00 dances for the rich white folks and nothing but higher taxes for the rest of us.

Just remember folks, when Big Bubba and Little Bubba are in the room...grab ahold of your

Re: Waiting For Superman:

The Documentary "Waiting For Superman", not only shows how inner city schools can "make the grade", but it also shows that to do this a school system must have motivated students, which have parents that will do anything to help their children succeed, therefore showing the child the importance of a good education. The documentary shows motivated and creative teachers and motivated and creative Administration that recognize the needs of the system and are willing to do something about it. It's not an impossible task for Edgefield County schools but it is going to take a lot of motivated people for it to work. Does Edgefield Co have that?

Where is Barack Obama?  Is he still in office?  As he jets off with his family for a taxpayer-paid vacation in Rio, does he realize the world is falling apart around him?

Does he realize that the radical unrest and disturbances in the Middle East are driving oil and gasoline prices so high that a double dip recession - this time with inflation - is increasingly likely?

Does he get it that the catastrophe in Japan may wipe out 12% of the world's economy for the time being, creating huge economic problems for the U.S.?

Does he understand that he could have stopped the bloodshed in Libya by declaring a no fly zone three weeks ago and that if he does it now, he can still stop a brutal dictator from murdering thousands more?

Does he know that he is still president and that he federal budget is his responsibility?  Or does he plan on laying back, doing nothing, and letting the two houses of Congress fight it out?

And how about Muslim extremism?  Does he understand that a potentially disastrous Caliphate is emerging from Morocco to Iran dedicated to promoting the worst of global terrorism?

And does he remember that we are at war in Afghanistan and that we have 369,000 troops deployed overseas, away from their families at great expense to the taxpayer?  Does he realize that we are not winning in Afghanistan and probably can't win with his current policies?

While he bathes on the beaches of Rio, does he get it that the federal government has to borrow $40 billion a week to stay afloat and that the national debt grows by about 1% every month?

We have gone from wishing for another president to wishing for a president!  A leader to take action as these crucial challenges loom

The image of fiddling on the beaches of South America as Rome burns is coming to define the Obama presidency.

The right wing has always disliked Obama.  Independents have usually joined in the criticism.  But such weakness, passivity, and out-of-touch disconnection with events -- in the face of such events! - will likely even erode his base among liberals.

When Hillary Clinton leaks to the media that she favored stronger action in Libya and is upset with the White House dithering, can the rest of the left be far behind?

Editor's post: Just before midnight an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy had to call to have his patrol car towed for repairs on Stephens Road. I know by my concentrated coverage of governmental and law enforcement reports, the car has well over the recommended mileage for use as an emergency response vehicle and has been taken out of service on several occasions recently.

I wonder if anyone is looking at the cost of repairing the aged fleet of patrol cars for the Sheriff's Office versus what it would cost to replace them? Newer cars have fewer repairs (most covered by a warranty), they are more fuel efficient (less gas usage equals savings and at $3.32 a gallon that adds up), and reduces insurance and liability costs.

Edgefield County residents can feel safer knowing that the paltry three deputies covering the 507 square mile county was reduced to two until an even older and more dilapidated and higher mileage reserve patrol car could be obtained.

It's nice to know that the deputy racing to your rescue in the event of a break-in, robbery, or other violent crime may be delayed when the car breaks down.

I feel safer already. Don't you?

That initial audit found no records for ticket sales for 19 sports events at the complex between 2007 and 2010. It also found there were no regular reviews of ticket sales or receipts."

Who audits money collected for the Edgefield County Recreation Department? Those that benefit from the money?

Editor's note: Good question. The county receives no accounting of funds made by the use of the county owned concession stand, gate fees are collected in cash, and County Councilman Willie Bright goes apoplectic if you mention Bettis Park.

I would like to add a bit of good news to all the bad news posted on here, by saying Thank God Edgefield County has Mrs. Sharon Swearingen! Mrs. Swearingen is the PTO President and the SIC President for Merriwether Elementary School. She is also the Edgefield County 4H leader where she has over 100 4H members. Mrs. Swearingen has really brought MES pride up in the past 6 months! She does everything she possibly can to better our school for our teachers, staff and mostly our students. Last year’s MES PTO took more than a year to complete a (what should have been simple) play ground project for the old kids. The project was not completed until this year when Mrs. Swearingen and her staff stood their ground and told contractors to “get it done now.” As I pulled into the Kindergarten drop off Monday morning I noticed Mrs. Swearingen had been hard at work again! She and her staff of 2 had the very old and dangerous wood play ground equipment removed and the grounds are being prepared for a nice new one. When I talked to Mrs. Swearingen about the project she assured me it would not be a “next year project.” Instead the new play area will be completely finished by the end of the second week in April! WAY TO GO! Mrs. Swearingen also headed a memorial fund for a student recently lost at MES and raised enough funds to fully pay for this young child’s funeral services and to help the family out. I have never seen a parent more involved in our school system and in his/her child’s activities as she is. Mrs. Swearingen also heads up the Edgefield County 4H program. She teachers over 100 members every Monday after school. She has held gun safety courses, talked about different forms of hunting, animal safety and many other outdoor activities. However, the most amazing thing is when my child came home last week telling me that they are planting a garden at the school! I went to the next 4H meeting this past Monday and sure enough every member had a plant planted in the room and they are getting ready to move them outside at the school in the next 2 weeks. Mrs. Swearingen informed me that the students would be taking care of these plants and the school will be using them in the lunchroom. I would love to see our county somehow recognize Mrs. Sharon Swearingen for all her hard work and dedication to our children. I wish we had more parents like her!!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO MRS. SWEARINGEN, WE LOVE YOU!

Getting ready to file and or pay your taxes? Here is the question of the year. Why do most entitlement people who get their EBT cards, extra money for MO babies, live in squalor, but have cell phones..... why do these people who don't and won't work...get money back at the end of the year? Most of these people don't pay into any tax based system, yet are the biggest beneficiaries of government tax dollars. Think of the billions of dollars saved if the government did not give these people tax money each year. Of course these Obama and Cocanine Jackson voters would be deprived or as the Democraps like to say "disenfranchised". No politican is willing to take on this behemoth problem simply due to the racial complexity of the matter. How much MO money does the government have to shell out for the welfare class? Just something to think about when you see how your and my tax dollars are spent. Keep Obama and his Communist friends in power and we will all be on entitlement programs.

Editor's note: 35% of all "income" received by citizens in America are in the form of government entitlements (welfare, food stamps, unemployment - not counting government retirees). Those who do not pay taxes get "earned income" tax credits to receive money in the form of a tax refund for money they never paid into the system. It's called wealth redistribution, or as Pres. Obama said, "spread the wealth around."

It is not new and original for Obama, Clinton, Carter, or Johnson. Huey Long promoted the socialist idea "share our wealth" in the 1930's. Check out the offical site, it reads like an Obama and Democrat playbook.

"Democrats have long fought for fiscal responsibility as a top priority of this Congress."
It doesn't take a government educated union goon to figure out that she is full of moosesqueeze. Under Nancy Pelosi's 111th Congress, federal spending increased by 21%. That's just in two years! In 2010, Congress spent $3.45 trillion, which was the second largest spending spree on record ... second only to the spending spree of the 111th Congress in 2009. Are you calling this fiscal responsibility? But wait, there's more!
•    When the Democrats took control of Congress in 2007, the debt held by the public was 36.2% of GDP. It rose to 40.2% the next year. This year it will be about 63.6%, next year 68.6%, then 77% of GDP in 2020. And the Obama administration's budget estimates 218% in 2050.
The deficit in 2007 was $160 billion. In the next year the Pelosi-Reid Congress took it up to $458 billion, and when President Obama came into office in 2009 it hit $1.4 trillion. The current 2010 projected deficit is $1.6 trillion, which will lead to a tripling of our national debt from 2008 to 2020.

Yes really. Be as picky as you want about the specifics of the tax story, but if not for the investment capability, determination and imagination of those who have earned something to invest there would be little growth in today’s service oriented economy. Not everyone that has accumulated wealth has stolen, bribed, cheated, swindled, etc… everyone else to gain it. I would prefer to be wealthier, who wouldn’t? But I do not feel it is necessary to take something extra from someone else to achieve a particular level of comfort for myself.

How could a flat tax not be fair to everyone? And if you didn’t earn it what makes you think you deserve it?

Editor's note: I would support a consumption tax (ie: Fair Tax) not a "flat tax". Why benefit those who do nothing to produce wealth and jobs over those who depend on the government for food, housing, and medical benefits? Under the Fair Tax everyone would pay taxes, including drug dealers and those in underground economies.

Well, it's not my fault if I thoroughly plan and effectively implement the instruction, but Johnny's mother lets him stay out of school two or three days a week and he misses it.  It's not my fault that Henry got into trouble on the playground and is suspended for three to five days.  It's not my fault that Susie, Sally, and Joe can't find their books and don't bring them to class, and three others don't have pencils or paper.  It's not my fault if Annie is not completing and turning in her assignments and FIVE phone calls to the parents have produced no change.  It's not my fault if Alex can barely keep his eyes open because he has been texting or on Facebook until two o'clock in the morning.  It's not my fault that Kellie works more slowly than the other students and doesn't finish the work at home when given the opportunity.  It's not my fault that there are so many interruptions to instruction, whether by "important" phone calls or announcements from the office that pull students out of class to go sign up to play a sport.  It's not my fault that some of the students see their physically and mentally-able parents stay home and collect a check each month and plan to do the same.  It's not my fault that the school administrators continue to pass children to the next grade when they have not mastered the necessary skills to succeed.

A teacher's job is to create stimulating learning experiences at a particular grade level.  However, anytime a teacher deals with human beings, there will be some outside factors that are not within his or her control.  It's not that it's NEVER the teacher's fault, but OFTEN it isn't.

How our tax system works.

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for lunch and the bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men ate lunch in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily lunch by $20." Lunch for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to eat. So, the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20,"declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man," but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I got"
"That's true!!" shouted the seventh man.
"Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for lunch so the nine sat down and had lunch without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore.
In fact, they might start eating overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.
For those who understand, no explanation is needed.  For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.

Re: Sounds like a bit of Whining:

I think that you misunderstood my statement about providing a learning environment. I was not referring to any difficulty in initiating it. I was referring to people not understanding what a learning environment should be because they lack the formal education, and experience in the area of teaching. I stayed in education for 34 years because I was good at it and was always rewarded by delightful daily interactions with children and positive feedback from parents and administrators.  As a matter of fact I
was thinking of getting back into education for another 34 years!

An understanding of what it takes to teach a child involves an open mind, patience, good parenting, knowledge of human development and how the brain works (a very complex subject). A child's first teacher is the parent. A child is born with the capacity to learn anything in any language. Soooo,
whatever the parent teaches (and how that happens is another subject), and whatever is experienced in the environment, is what the child learns and grows up to use. It really can' t be anyone else's fault since no one else is around to raise the child other than the "Parent ". Unfortunately many people lack the knowledge of good parenting skills.

As for the support that our educational systems need, your comments do not fall into the categories of being knowledgeable, helpful, positive, or productive. These characteristics are essential in sustaining  success in any endeavor and would be very helpful in supporting any educational system.

Re:Teaching Teachers

Sending people to California to train to teach teachers how to teach? Aren't our teachers in Edgefield county licensed teachers? Haven't they already been trained to teach? Who are these people that are going to be trained to teach teachers? How were they selected? Are only some existing teachers
going to be "re-trained" to teach or are all of the teachers going to be "re-trained"? Who is giving the training in California? How was this program selected? Is the training program going to meet the needs of the children in Edgefield, South Carolina? How much is this going to cost? Who's idea was this? Why do they think this is necessary? Was there a committee made up of teachers, parents, administrators and students to help select this program? As tax payers shouldn't we know the answers to these questions? Are they posted somewhere?

If I was a young teacher(black or white) I would not know how to teach a class of children in the ages of 18- 21 years.

This is only the nineth grade. The lower grades just pushed them ahead to get them out of their hair.(or maybe a wig)

If a person is two years older than the class he is in, then he should be dropped out or put in another school (or) prison.

The teachers today think just because you are nineteen or twenty, that shouldn’t cause a distraction in a class of fourteen years old.

When they came out with Wardlaw in the 1971 I didn’t think it would work.

I am so sad to mention that intergration has gone the other way.

I am all for "little people" getting special treatment, but to let her get away with all of the bullying that she does is the craziest thing I have ever heard. This "little person" does not even live in Edgefield County. She is just a nobody who could not cut it at NAHS (the school in which she is zoned for).I removed my child from FCHS and when my child was removed so was removed the offer to prepare a site plan for the new football field ( a job that normally runs around $35,000.00).This "little person" has not only cost the school this amount of money but will continue to cause good kids who actually live in this county and whose parents actually pay taxes to not attend FCHS.I have one more child that would have attended FCHS in a few years, but now I believe hell would most definitely have to freeze over before that would happen. When are you stupid people going to wake up and clean house?FCHS was a great idea in theory, but a disaster in reality.Perhaps if you actually punished the bad apples or simply kick them out if they don't live in this county, it could be a great school.

Teachers….a privileged class.
Last evening I had the opportunity to sit with a teacher at a social function and were discussing the aspects of “Teacher merit pay” or performance based pay (e.g. exceptional teachers getting paid more).  I support merit pay.  However, it was fun to watch her and her friend “bow up” in disgust when I mentioned my support.  This lady cited “how hard it is for teachers”, how they have no control over the demographics of their classroom (e.g. the type of students they get from the community).  She also stated  how it wasn’t fair and how this would hurt “the children” because teacher’s would be forced to “teach to the test” or whatever tool  are used to evaluate the teacher to receive merit pay.  My reply to my teacher friend:

First, in the documentary “Waiting for Superman”…it is shown clearly how students from the inner city, and from failing schools, outperformed public schools when taught by motivated and dedicated teachers.

Second, I sympathize with teachers that parents are essential, and many parents are the problem.  However, teachers  who move through the system and become administrators must take ownership of their “profession”…set professional standards, enforce them, and be willing to risk lawsuits to stand up to unreasonable parents, and set aside political agendas and be willing to expel students when clearly warranted.

Third, self examine your profession.  To be a “profession” versus a “job”….lawyers, doctors, accountants, pilots…etc have professional standards, peer review…and annual certification standards or exams…yet teachers bristle at such suggestions.  I’m tired of seeing teachers who are probably the most emulated role models, speak “ebonics” or “white trailer trash talk”.  Think about it, an educator that says “axe”…when the proper word is “ask”…and they’re a TEACHER!

Fourth, “teaching the test.”  Teachers are already doing this.  This isn’t about what “teacher want to teach.”  This is about what the market demands they teach.  It’s about arming our kids with the tools to compete on the global market place.  Today are kids come to the “gunfight” armed with a pocket knife.  In STHS some teachers repeatedly show videos or feel good classes emphasizing their self-esteem instead of teaching hard or difficult topics/subjects.  Real success is the best form of self-esteem.

Lastly, the privileged attitude demonstrated by teachers is demonstrated by the belief in the concept of “tenure” (e.g. after so long, I can never be fired).  It is further demonstrated in their vehement opposition to merit pay.  Only teachers could have the warped view that their pay should not be tied to performance…then say, “but I’m not going to give Mr and Mrs Taxpayer school choice!  If this was a private venture, they’d be investigated for racketeering.  But schools aren't a private venture, and teacher's are PUBLIC SERVANTS, and while teachers may look at us as "unaware of their challenges" or "uncouth"...we are still their employers.  The world is changing, and when our country has to import “educated professionals” from other countries, and we look around the room for accountability, the teachers are looking over their shoulders instead of the mirror, teachers need to understand their role in this changing world.  It’s not all their fault, but they need to take a  bite of the responsibility sandwich.

Sounds like a bit of whining.  If it was all that tough than why did you stay with it for 34 years?  I think the American people are beginning to realize how duped they have been over the years, allowing the the thug Teachers Union to constantly badger them into giving up their hard earned taxpayer dollars to support a failing system.  82% of our schools are failing.  And yet you call for yet another program of touchy feely Kumbiyah, and blame it on those that aren't teachers and just possibly couldn't understand.

Ya ever notice its never the teachers fault?  It's always the parents, or the state, or someone not giving them enough money or not getting involved.  If just half of the deadwood in the education system could be removed, our schools would not be 8th in the world, but once again #1!  But it's these bleeding heart teachers that know everything and have suffered so dearly throughout the years trying, against all odds, to provide our children with a decent education that have gladly turned their heads, have said absolutely nothing, and have taken no action to rid their profession of people who couldn't teach a dog tricks let alone our children.  So, should we continue to bow our heads and accept the status quo, or should we as responsible parents, take charge and correct this mess?  Obviously it hasn't been tackled by the teacher's themselves.  It's these whiners that give the really good teachers a bad name.  But it's all the teachers who have really given themselves a bad name because they have coward and cowed to the thugs that threaten their jobs if they speak up.  Thank God Almighty teachers weren't the ones who had to decide to fight for our independence from the king.  If so, we'd be sipping tea and eating crumpets.

This constant whining about how hard it is for a teacher is no longer a viable argument.  The teachers union has been exposed for what it is and has always been.  If teachers were business owners/operators they would either be bankrupt and out of business, or be asking for a stimulus hand out.  An 82% failure rate of our schools only depletes your argument.  If I were a teacher, I'd be embarrassed.  Some are, but most aren't.  The check and benefits far outweigh the shame.  I think the American people have awakened and it's time to quote Donald Trump - "You're fired!"

I am a retired teacher of 34 years. I was "trained" in a very good university and have been very successful as a teacher. I  enjoyed every minute of my teaching career. I think that our teachers today, are not allowed to "teach". We are so focused on test scores, children's behavior, lack of funds, that teaching has just become a rote experience that does not allow for creativity, inventiveness, or individualized and meaningful instruction.

Teachers need a supportive community that is willing to have an open mind to new methods in education. They need a supportive administration that is also open minded enough to hear what goes on in the classroom. An administration that will assist in providing local workshops  that will encourage teachers to provide creative activities in the classroom.  An administration that will help with teacher concerns and student needs.

How do the teachers feel about this idea of being re-taught to teach? Let them have a say. Don't insult them and create hard feelings by telling them that they need to be re-taught how to teach. If the problem is that you cannot get  community support, parent support, and administrative support, then there isn't a program in existence that will help the educational system in Edgefield Co. Because, it really does take a village...

I have also heard that they are not SACS accredited.  My question is this.  Knowing these facts why would this be an option for someone's kids.  I have talked to some parents about FCHS and talking to those who support it are much like talking to a diehard democrat.  No matter what our President does or says he is still the greatest thing since sliced bread.  To Fox Creek people no matter the criminals or accredidation it's still the greatest thing since sliced bread.  I don't get it.

Instead of knocking something before it has even gotten off the ground why not give it a chance to grow and succeed and see what happens. It sure cant do any more damage to the school system then has already been done. Not all teacher can handle all situations in a classroom and that has been proven over and over again. Having a teacher, a co-worker, and a friend to most be trained to help in a situation like that is great for ECSD. So do your research before you go online with things you obviously know nothing about! I guess I was inconsiderate in my first post and have rethought my position on this issue.  Somebody asked for me to let them know when I would drop my kids off, so in order for things to be easier on everybody thats in such a rush, Ill drop my kids off every morning from now on between 715 and 745.  Now understand, y'all either need to get there before I do or wait till I leave, because if Im gonna rearrange my schedule to make it easier on y'all, you dang sure better not be in my way when I get there.  Hope everybody has a great day tomorrow and gets where they're headed on time.

re: If that is the case, it is unknown how Charlton was allowed to return to school. According to the Edgefield County School District policy, once you are expelled from a county public school you are not allowed to attend any public school in the county.

They are only expelled for that year. The following school year they would be allowed to re-enter school at any school. And many counties do allow expelled kids in from another county (not all, but many) and most private & charter schools do also.

We need to remember that FCHS does not use the Edgefield County rules and never has, although John Gratop tried hard to back in the day. It was Mrs. Bishop that made it so that would not be. She always wanted her own rules and seems to have them to this day. Nothing will change there which is why my kids will not attend that school.

When the school was started there were also strong nepotism rules that have since been thrown to the side as the (removed) can prove. Also there were rules about expulsion and other punishments, all have been thrown out with Murph following whatever the Bishop want him to do. Allowing the non-certified teachers to continue teaching certainly does not help the students any either.

I also agree with the (quote) that stated that if you are a jock at FC you get away with everything, that is so true that it is scary!

Well, all of us were never experts in every class while going to school.  I loved math, and could spell very well, but I hated literature, grammar, and geometry.  I was also good at geography and world events too.  Obviously you may be able to spell, but your recounting of events, SUCKS!

I think Bush took us to war in Iraq and Afghanistan - NOT IRAN!  However, you may just be right since that is essentially who fueled the civil unrest and aided and abetted the insurgency in Iraq causing us great consternation.   Our men and women, however, were very capable of lifting and shifting fire and adapting to the ever fluid and changing asymmetrical combat zone.

So you see, you may be able to spell, but when you follow the propaganda and regurgitate it, you trip yourself up.  You're probably a part of some that accuse the Tea Party of being tea baggers and racists.  In the ever appropriate words of a self thinking American, one person stated he didn't appreciate being labeled a racist because he supported the Tea Party.  He did admit that he loved the black side of Obama that was good natured, jovial, and fun to be around.  It was the white Marxist, Socialist, Communist side of Obama he hated.

At the County Council's Planning and brainstorming session Friday, Dorn wanted to act as if everyone else was to blame for Sheriff Dobey not having the needed patrol cars, not him because he supported it.

(Old) News flash! It was Dorn and his fellow Democrats, Monroe Kneece and Willie Bright, who shot down the cars in last year's budget, not Republicans Ashcraft and Blackwell - who voted for them.

Grow up. Do you you think you are convincing anyone about Obama's shortcomings?  I am one of those white liberals who voted for Obama; and I'm proud of it.  I remember, quite painfully, that real estate and the stock market crashed BEFORE Obama came along.  We were at war in Iran and Afghanistan BEFORE Obama.  Was this the work of Bush, or of, at that time, the junior senator from Illinois.

No, I do not support what Obama's doing now about health care and the budget, but I'm not a traitor.  If you want to find a traitor, ask those in the Bush administration who lied to us about weapons of mass destruction in Iran...killing THOUSANDS of our men and women...many of whom were probably Obama supporters.  I guess you consider them, "cowards, thugs and garbage."

Re: The median income in Edgefield County is about $40,000. Perhaps the Census Bureau has it wrong.  You got one?

That link provided is per household. $24,000 is per capita, or per person reporting income. Per household, could be 1,2,3, or multiple income earners per household.
web posted March 7, 2011

"Re: The median income in Edgefield County is about $40,000.

Household income is the sum of money income received in the calendar year by all household members 15 years old and over, including household members not related to the householder, people living alone, and other nonfamily household members. Included in the total are amounts reported separately for wage or salary income; net self-employment income; interest, dividends, or net rental or royalty income or income from estates and trusts; Social Security or Railroad Retirement income; Supplemental Security Income (SSI); public assistance or welfare payments; retirement, survivor, or disability pensions; and all other income.

Since answers to income questions are frequently based on memory and not on records, many people tend to forget minor or sporadic sources of income and, therefore, underreport their income. Underreporting tends to be more pronounced for income sources that are not derived from earnings, such as public assistance, interest, dividends, and net rental income.

Per capita income is the mean income computed for every man, woman, and child in a geographic area. It is derived by dividing the total income of all people 15 years old and over in a geographic area by the total population in that area. Note -- income is not collected for people under 15 years old even though those people are included in the denominator of per capita income. This measure is rounded to the nearest whole dollar. Unlike median household income, which is estimated annually for states and counties, per capita income is available only for 1999.

Families and persons are classified as below poverty if their total family income or unrelated individual income was less than the poverty threshold specified for the applicable family size, age of householder, and number of related children under 18 present (see table cited below for poverty level thresholds). The Census Bureau uses the federal government's official poverty definition.

If the total income of a person's family is less than the threshold appropriate for that family, then the person is considered poor, together with every member of his or her family. If a person is not living with anyone related by birth, marriage, or adoption, then the person's own income is compared with his or her poverty threshold.

The poverty thresholds are updated every year to reflect changes in the Consumer Price Index. The poverty thresholds are the same for all parts of the country they are not adjusted for regional, state or local variations in the cost of living.

Poverty status is not determined for institutionalized people, people in military group quarters, people in college dormitories, and unrelated individuals under 15 years old. These groups were excluded from the numerator and denominator when calculating the percent of persons below poverty.
 Median household income, 2008  $42,422

Obama will soon reap the fruits of his misguided policies -- $4-per-gallon gas, soon to go up to $5 or $6!

And the fuel-price increases will take their place alongside food-price rises. Food prices for corn, soybeans, wheat and other basic crops have almost doubled in the past year.

(The Consumer Price Index deliberately understates fuel and food inflation in its formula to avoid triggering cost-of-living adjustment increases for seniors that depend on social security.)

Finally, he has encouraged the Federal Reserve Board to almost triple the money supply, over $1 trillion of it based on the purchase of worthless mortgage-backed securities.

The combination of reduced confidence in the dollar (at home and abroad) and the rises in fuel and food prices will force up prices as costs push them higher. Already, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has pressed for the replacement of the dollar as an international currency by "drawing rights" printed by the IMF. Such a policy, of course, would be a disaster since it would attempt to base global currency on an institution without the power to tax. But it is a measure of how far faith in the dollar has fallen that it is being seriously urged. U.S. inflation can only fan that movement.

Since the Fed has got to stop printing money soon -- lest it become wallpaper -- interest rates, too, will rise, also contributing to the cost pushed price inflation.

But the economy cannot afford to pay these higher prices. Consumer demand, which accounts for three-quarters of GDP, is already stagnant. With inflation, it will drop. Then, unable to recoup their costs, vendors will be forced to raise prices even higher. An inflationary psychology will take hold of the economy. Higher interest rates will be needed to break its hold, forcing us into yet another recession, this one fully courtesy of Obama.

For months now, political pundits have wondered if the economy would improve, helping Obama's reelection chances. It now appears that the exact opposite is likely and that his reelection chances will be washed away (good riddance) by a massive flood of inflation as a consequence of his misguided policies.

Obama will doubtless blame oil companies and speculators for the fuel price increases, but his role in encouraging instability in the oil-producing regions of the Middle East is apparent enough. He put the demand of the Egyptian people for political change ahead of America's need for financial stability. He was so enraptured by being "on the right side of history" that he forgot about his role as the head of our economy and its vulnerability to the very instability his policies fanned.

Editor's note: Why do you think gold is hitting record highs? I predicted this over ten years ago, repeated here in 2005. Silver, copper, and other precious metals and stones are other secure "money" (related in the article) that will hold its value in the coming downfall pushed by Obama just as it was with Carter in the mid 70's. Other commodities; sugar, wheat, corn, oil, natural gas, and a host of others will no doubt also grow - at least in my personal opinion - in value as the value of the dollar continues to decline as more money is printed. I'm not offering investment advice by no means, just my own personal opinions based on historical data.

Always remember this.  If you want to clean up a mess, you have to use some pretty harsh tactics.  Playing nicey nicey or touchy feely with these political hacks and thugs get you nowhere.  As soon as they remove a threat through intimidation, they start all over again.  Has anyone checked to see if Bibbs has horned in on a trip to California?  You know he was the travel king and was living the "suite" life.

Has the entire world gone mad or just the ECSD? I have an idea, why don’t we hire a school superintendent to teach our school superintendent how to run a school district? I for one do not want to see my tax dollars spent sending these “Teacher’s” to Beverly Hills, CA to learn how to teach Teacher’s how to teach. You would think when we hire a Teacher, he or she would already know how to do the job we hired them to do. A good example is  look at the democraps in Edgefield county, especially some members of the County Council and County Administrator. Tell me what you see? Do you see people you would want to have sit down in your home for dinner, or even invite some of their friends into your home? Obama and his people have taken our country to a new low morally and economically. And please you sickening white liberals, don't blame high oil prices, mounting national debt, border insecurity, class warfare, Nazi union tactics, etc on G.W. Bush. Unfortunately, we have a president who can not prove his citizenship, and ironically fooled his African-American supporters with his black-American Hawaii and Chicago roots. What's even more ironic is Obama is racially mixed with 50% white (mother's side), 43% Arabic (father's side) and 7% African (Father's side). Is Obama really the first African-American president or the first Muslim Arabic president?
Your president, proclaimed his communist roots when in his 20's and has allied himself with communist/socialist friends ever since. He was raised as a Muslim and you wonder why he bows to mid-east Arabic rag-heads and is slow to respond with an American position when the mid-east burns, or proclaim support to Israel. Obama is the most dangerous threat our country has and his supporters are now traitors who also want this great country taken down. Again, look around locally in Edgefield Country at Obama supporters such as Cocaine Jackson and his friends, some School Board members, Edgefield county's many residing sex offenders and their supporting family members, jail thugs, and of course some politicans. Are these the type of people you want near your children, as your neighbor or having any influence on your country or county? These are the people who follow Obama and want what he can provide. Now you know who the enemy is and who to not trust. Don't forget to thank Obama for not letting our country drill for oil and now we are paying his Arabic/Muslim friends whatever they demand. Are you happy now Democraps?

The fact that you cannot comprehend that is appalling, and unfortunately a sign of the times.  A car line is a bottleneck by its very nature.  You can figure out a way to give your hugs and kisses beforehand, but you choose not to, and consequently cause this process to take longer than it has to, and you are being inconsiderate by doing so.

Sorry, you are the one that is wrong here.  Your position is selfish and indefensible.

QUOTE FROM HAROLD:

"I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that you're retired?'  Well, I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background, and one of the things I enjoy most is converting beer, wine and vodka into urine.  Then I spray it over a photo of Obama! I do it every day and I really enjoy it."

Harold should be an inspiration to us all.

To the person who commented about dropping your kids off at school and giving them extra hugs and kisses. We do all of that before we get there. We've been there early and had to wait, we've been there late and have had to wait. Just tell me when you're going to be there and I'll work my schedule around yours. Obviously, you have no where to be, while some of us are trying to be productive citizens. And besides my kids know I love them, I don't have to reinforce that everytime they exit the vehicle.

The fine conservatives of Edgefield County (making an average $40,000 per year) should read this.

Editor's post: Maybe Administrator Brown is spending too much time with someone's honey bunny making too much money in his office to be objective. I hope he knows I-20 is open for traffic in both directions.

How long do you suppose it took the county administrator to prepare that lengthy statement he read at the council meeting tonight?  Our county is going to hell in a handbag and what was the majority of the meeting spent on?  Not the crisis the county is facing...no...because the administrator has an agenda that does not include what is good for Edgefield County.  First, he dumped on and belittled the sheriff and then he proceeded to further his ludicrous agenda by telling, no reading about why he is right and those who do not agree with him are wrong.  If council doesn't see it his way, he questions their motives.  If the county attorney doesn't interpret the law the way he sees it, he challenges his interpretation and, I'm sorry to say, in the end the council and the county attorney go silent.  Edgefield County does not have a county administrator, we have a portly Muammar Gaddafi.  If he would put the energy he directs at causing hatred and discontent into the betterment of this county instead of trying to further his agenda, I'd say he was worth what we taxpayers pay him.  I thought we had a council/administrator form of government in this county.  Apparently not.  Mr. Campbell if you are the man you claim to be you and the other council members better wake up and smell the coffee.  Who hires and fires who?  What's taking so long to get this county back on track?  One more thing, make sure the deputy at the council meetings in the future knows that Mr. Bright is fair game for any nut job that wants to take a pot shot at him.  Apparently Mr. Bright can take care of himself.

Looks like Dorn has competition in the rambling incoherent nonsense department.  I guess Brown thinks he has his attorney license???  How do you spell boring drivel???   Want a secretarial lesson?  When taking minutes, only what is said in a meeting is included.  Comments not mad eduring a meeting should never have been allowed to be  put in after the fact in the first place. No one sat on this.   That has been the issue since September.

Re:  Could the parents dropping off kids in the mornings at the middle school and elementary school, please take care of whatever personal business and hugs and kisses before you get there. You HAVE to notice the line of vehicles behind you!

Here's some advice, if you're running so far behind that you don't have time to give your kids a hug or a kiss before you drop them off at school, try leaving 5 minutes earlier.  PS - I'll give mine an extra hug in the morning, just for you.

Between 1979 and 2005, the mean after-tax income for the top 1% increased by 176%, compared to an increase of 69% for the top quintile overall, 20% for the fourth quintile, 21% for the middle quintile, 17% for the second quintile and 6% for the bottom quintile. For the same time span the aggregate share of after-tax income held by the top percentile increased from 7.5% to 14%.The diminishing political clout of labor unions, resulting from declining union membership rates, and less government redistribution as well as decreased expenditure on social services are commonly cited as the main causes of this trend.

The median income in Edgefield County is about $40,000.

This is the middle quintile.

As America moves right, Edgefield County gets left further and further behind.

I could count on one hand the number of families in Edgefield County in the top 1% of income earners (over $400,000 per year.)

How much do you think they should make off a gallon of gas. Remember it cost to pump it out of the ground and those who use credit cards there is also a charge for that.

I do applaud your coverage of the sex offender stories.  What a shame it happened in the first place, but at least you are on top of that and are sharing facts.   Now as for your attitude...that is another story.  I happened to be in (a store) the other day and heard you telling everyone how important you are...blah, blah, blah.  Look its a job, your not an officer of the law nor are you a public official (even though your Wifey is).  You have a knack for digging dirt and stirring up the pot...way to go.  But don't ever make the assumption that you speak for a majority of the people in Edgefield County, because trust me...you don't!  In my opinion, you have little man syndrome hiding behind your poison pen....oops that would be a journalist.  I mean hiding behind your keyboard and monitor.  That's a much more accurate description for a blogmaster.  Some advice: be careful what you say, i'm sure the fine law enforcement personnel in the county would not appreciate you bad mouthing them.

Editor's note: The only thing I have to say is.. you are a liar. I have never posed as a law enforcement officer and I have never "bad mouthed" any officer or claimed to have any power over anyone.

If you continue to submit false claims your comments will be refused from this day forward. Keep changing your email address, your ISP remains the same.

RE: "I was tipped by a friend in the industry to the sharp rise the day before it took place and topped off all vehicles. To make the impact less damaging, they are topped off again when they are at 3/4 a tank."

That's always good advice, but when I return at the end of the day, I'm just about empty.  Also.  Remember the argument they put forth when people were complaining about gas going up so rapidly.  Wasn't it that they had to pay for the gas in the ground that was subject to the spike in prices.  Gee that gas stays in the ground an awful long time.  It spikes $20 a barrel and gas goes up with it.  When the price per barrel drops sharply, that gas at the pumps doesn't go down any time soon-and the argument-well it was already paid for a the higher prices.  Consumers caught between the gas station owners and the IDIOT politicians that don't believe our reliance of foreign oil is a national security issue.  China drills off the cost of Florida just outside of Cuba.  If they cause a spill, where's the oil going?  To the Florida shores.  And do you think they'll clean it up like we do?  So our environmentalists whackos, yeah the same ones that brought us global warming, stop us from drilling and we have a dipstick for a President that has imposed a moratorium on drilling because of one spill of which he drug is feet on.  One spill out of how many oil rigs in the gulf 1300+?  America, get the picture.  No drilling, union favoritism, higher debt, higher taxes.  Hows that hope and change.  Actually, It's pretty good.  Unions are being exposed.  Our national security reliance on oil is being exposed.  The Democrat Party and their Socilaist ties are really being exposed.  Just a good ole fashioned cleansing is needed now.

I recently read a comment about gas prices being higher in Edgefield than Columbia.  I do not know if this is true or if there is a valid reason, beyond capitalism at work.  However, the editor added a comment that a full tank of gas produced better gas mileage than a half a tank.  I must have misunderstood the commment becasue that statement is definitely incorrect.  If you assume that a tank holds 20 gallons of gas, than a half of a tank has ten gallons less.  Gas weights 6.15 punds per gallon.  Therefore, a car with a half full tank weights 61.5 pounds less than a car with a full tank.  Obviously, it takes less energy to propel a car with less weight.  Acutally, that is theory around using nitrogen in tires instead of air.  It weights less than air (a little).  If you could drive a car with an empty tank, you would increase your gas mileage, unless you ran out.

GAO Details Billions in Federal Waste or......... Your Tax Dollars At Work.

As members of Congress fight over what to cut in the current federal budget to avert a government shutdown, lawmakers are about to receive a blockbuster report that could provide a roadmap to potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in waste. The nonpartisan General Accounting Office (GAO) is poised to release a report Tuesday that one senator said "will make us all look like jackasses."

A unionized public employee, a Tea Partier, and a CEO are sitting at a table. In the middle of the table there is a plate with a dozen cookies on it. The CEO reaches across and takes 11 cookies, looks at the Tea Partier and says, "Look out for that union guy -- he wants a piece of your cookie".

Editor's note: Nice way to distort facts. Public service unions (and unions in general - GM and Chrysler come to mind) are destroying this nation. Every state that allows public sector unions is going broke because of... wait for it.. the unions. Not "CEO's" of private sector job creators. The taxpayers are forced to have their money taken and paid to pubic sector union members, who in turn take those same tax dollars and turn it over to the unions who in turn hand it over to Democrat candidates.

Anywhere else (like the mafia) that would be considered money laundering. And now you know why Democrats fight so hard to promote the unions. It's their cash cow.

Why do we have so many sex offenders around here? Are we the Mecca for child molesting? It used to be that i never heard about anyone getting arrested for molesting kids and now it seems every time i turn around someone else is in jail for raping or (removed) kids.

Editor's note: Six years ago there was no Edgefield Daily and the public was never informed about these crimes. Most are still not reported in the local print media.

RE: "Gas prices...wow...Can everyone say "price gouging"?"

Yup. I also want to thank the bearded punk at the local station (removed) for helping me make up my mind.  I travel throughout three states, and I always take note of the gas prices.  Here locally, the one chain was always 10-20 cents cheaper than anywhere else.  But lately I have noticed a disturbing trend, they are now even or a penny or two higher than everywhere else.  Last week in Anderson while gas was $3.09 here, it was $2.82-2.86 in Anderson.  While it was $2.97 here, it was $2.85 in Columbia.  And that's where the punk employee comes in.

I was finished pumping gas and came into the store to get soda.  Another gentleman came in behind me and said to the clerk that gas was cheaper in Columbia.  The punk's reply, "Then go to Columbia."  Well, he made up my mind and I no longer buy my gas there if I can help it-and guess what?  I probably buy $300+ a week.  Guess they make so much now they don't care about keeping customers.

Editor's note: I was tipped by a friend in the industry to the sharp rise the day before it took place and topped off all vehicles. To make the impact less damaging, they are topped off again when they are at 3/4 a tank. Granted, you are still paying the higher price, but the impact is less with each fill-up. Of course, in time that savings gets erased if the prices remain artificially high. However, you are paying around $20 to "fill up" rather than $50 or $60 or more. You will also get better gas milage with a full tank than a half empty tank.
