When is the thing in trenton?

Editor's note: I can only assume you mean the Ridge Peach Festival. It will be held on June 15 -16.

Is there a schedule for trash pick up by the Sheriff?

Editor's note: Not that I know of. You can call the Sheriff's Office at 637-5337 or 278-1625 and inquire as to when the littler patrol will be in your area or to report a problem.

I love your sense of humor and the way you respond to some of the comments made in the wondering minds. I've suggested to you over and over to do a talk radio show locally and you shoot it down every time. I think it would be a big hit and you could be the next Austin Rhodes of Edgefield. I would listen and call in.

Editor's note: I am humbled by you commets, however; it takes all the time I have to prepare the web site every day. The same result is available in the Wandering Minds.

We are on a well. Can the county make us follow the watering restrictions?

Editor's note: No, the restrictions are for customers of the county water system only. EdgefieldDaily.com will be reviewing the list of those who file saying they cannot abide by the restrictions and ask for a variance.

Re: Near head on collision on 23
I appreciated the pictures and statesments that were written.  They were truly stated and I just thank God no one was injured.  The driver of the truck had worked and was coming home, only 1/2 mile away and fell asleep.  He wont do it again.  We are having a hard time just getting him to drive again, but that will come.  A lesson learned the hard way.  Thanks again for Edgefield Daily.(com)  I love it.

Editor's note: Thank you for your kind comments. I was happy to find no injuries when I arrived. He is a thoughtful young man and I feel certain he will make this a life lesson and be stronger and safer for it. I think that was the most cordial crash I have every worked.

There is a local woman who (content deleted) was on the flight back from Paris with the guy that has tested positive for TB. She was on the news this evening and is refusing to be tested. Her reasoning for this, according to a friend of hers, is because she is going out of the country again in July and she doesn't want to be prevented from going in the event she tests positive. How irresponsible is that? It's a simple test, but she would rather take the chance, slim as it may be, that she will get it, and then pass it around to the rest of Edgefield County. I know I can't mention her name but I hope she reads this and will do the right thing and be tested. Not only for her safety, but for the safety of those around her!

Editor's note: Individuals who are named in the press or willingly give interviews that you would like to discuss here are able to be named. They put their name out there, they own it.

Saw in the paper where Councilman Kitchens said he was not a white faced clown.  What's wrong with Bozo?  As far as I'm concerned he has more sense than all of Council put together.  Kitchens comparing himself to a clown is actually a slap at poor ole Bozo.  I'd say he's more like a DOG that won't hunt!

Editor's note: I missed that, do tell where it may be found. If it is true - I smell a cartoon!!!!!!!!

I have sent in three guesses to the riddle and haven't gotten an answer. Are they all wrong?

Editor's note: I am not responding to the submissions. I have almost 1500 emails right now, most of which are attempts to solve the riddle. I will say no one has given the proper name. Only one has come close. I read every email but cannot respond to all. The answer will be posted tomorrow along with photos and some of the guesses. To be honest I did not know I would be able to locate the spot after not visiting the area for well over 20 years. After an hour in the woods, and more briar pricks than I can number, I found it.

You failed to say weather or not you reported the Black SUV.  By not commenting, I would say NO???  Maybe because they were "somebody" in the county that is above the law?

Also, somewhere along the line I missed the part about Booze in Georgia.  What was that all about?

Editor's note: No, I did not call the police. I had no tag information and by the time I had a final direction of travel he was parked in moments.

The "Booze in Ga", as you say, was a school sponsored event by Fox Creek with a cash bar. This came after allowing a student caught with drugs to stay in school. I'm not sure if that was before or after they forgot to report school money missing, but I'm pretty sure it came after being caught billing the county for students that did not attend the school and having to pay the money back. It all kind of runs together after a while.

Specify what area or school where 'Support Staff' in the ECSD deserve a pay raise. Most of the support
staff make more money than they deserve. If they want pay raises, go to school at night, learn new skills,
become more valuable, and find a new job. Support staff need to justify why they deserve pay raises.
Doing the minimum to get by in a job is no justification for a pay raise.
web posted May 31, 2007

your little riddle is just your way of not having to give the money away. I bet there is no answer to it and you know it. You just want to get hits on your website to make money.

Editor's note: There is an answer, and in fact, if someone sends in a picture of the location I will give an additional $50 to Relay for Life. Better still, if you (I have your e-mail address) send it in I will double the offer.
web posted May 30, 2007

Just wondering, if you reported the Black SUV.  Did you know the person driving?

Also, I did not see anything regarding FCHS Graduation in the paper. Why didn't you take pictures of these deserving students.  Is it because they are a small school and not worth the effort.

Booster Club at FCHS, well that is a joke.  Until I get more info, I may not join this year. Of course, I will support my child, but I don't trust this group of officers.  Everything to them is about money.

Editor's note: Fox Creek made it a point to tell the local press they did not get an invitation to the event but that if they wanted to come take pictures they "guessed" that would be "OK".  I was amazed they actually held something in the county of Edgefield for a change. They go from a booze party in Ga. to graduation at a church. What fine outstanding leaders this school has. Booze on Saturday, Church on Sunday. Where is that loan they had years ago for a new school?
web posted May 30, 2007

Why didn’t we recite the pledge to the American flag at graduation or awards night ?
web posted May 30, 2007

When do you reckon the Support Staff employees, the ones actually doing all the work, at Edgefield County Schools will be receiving a nice big pay raise?

Editor's note: That is funny...

Monday (around 12:30 -1pm) as I drove north on Sweetwater Road on my way to the Detention Center I was almost blown off the road by this great big black SUV passing me on double yellow lines doing at least 70 mph (in a 50 mph zone). Oncoming traffic slammed on their brakes and came to a stop to avoid being hit head on by this idiot. The driver of the SUV never hit the brakes. "There must be an emergency" I thought to myself. But, lo and behold the SUV did not turn towards the hospital when it reached the Bypass. "There must be a fire" I then thought, but there was none. I tried, unsuccessfully, to get close enough to the SUV to get a plate number to notify police. The SUV then flew down Penn Street (well over 50 mph) and parked in front of a busniess located just before the town square. I drove by the now parked SUV and made sure the driver saw me as I passed, I even waved to confirm he saw me. Maybe he didn't read the letter Mayor Durham wrote about speeders and reckless drivers in the town of Edgefield.

I  read the comment about the Command Vehicle at the graduation ceremonies the other night.  The writer immediately jumps to the conclusion that money was squandered on the vehicle and it could have been used for more deputies.  I appreciate your comments to set the record straight but let me go a little further.  I am chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in Edgefield County that decides how grant money from this particular source is to be spent.  The committe is composed by Federa law of representatives from law enforcement, EMS, EMA, and fire service in the county.  There are actually two grants under the Homeland funds.  One is strictly for law enforcement and the other is for emergency services.  The funds are administered by FEMA and auditied by SLED.  First, the grant is 100% funding and not one penny  of Edgefield County funds are used or can be used on the project.  The local planning committee meets to decide where the funds can best be used.  They CANNOT be used for personnel salaries, new construction of buildings, law enforcement cars and such.  There are pages and pages of restrictions and all expenditures must be pre-approved by SLED and meet FEMA guidelines.  The armored car was a donation from the company and cost us nothing.  The paint job, generator and radios were funded by the grant (again at 100%).   The committee felt that a multipurpose vehicle of this nature would be of benefit to the county in a number of scenarios from communications, to coordination and could be used by ALL emergency services at any given time.  The usefulness of the vehicle was born out shortly after we put it into service.  When the Graniteville spill occurred, this vehicle was the first out of county resource that was specifically requested by Aiken County EMA.  I know this for a fact because I received the request.  The vehicle and a crew stayed on scene at the staging area parked next to Aikens similar vehicle for nearly a week assisting with radio communications, rally point for D-HEC and other state and Federal agencies.

In the event of a natural or man-made disaster in our county the vehicle would be used as forward command and control and central rally point for a host of agencies coming into our county to help us.  It serves as an alternate communications point should our primary communications be put out of service.  Had we chosen not to use the money  we would have lost it and it would have defaulted to another county.  To my way of thinking that's not a very good idea.  The name of the game is preparedness and this vehicle is just one more element of our plan.

Thanks for the  chance to clear this up

Many people look at Memorial Day as just another "vacation" day and ignore the true meaning of the day. That is sad. To me Memorial Day is a somber day. Brave men and women gave their lives to protect our God given freedom. At 3pm a national moment of silence is to be observed across this nation. Join me in taking the time to honor not only the fallen, but those who today, and every day, stand in harms way for you and I in wartime. May God rest the souls of those who have passed, protect those who serve, and direct those who will serve in the future.
web posted May 28, 2007
Somebody sent in a comment about 4wheelers racing around in their neighborhood the other day. We live off Brightharp Rd and we have the same problem. They are teenagers and they drive like maniacs. One of these kids is going to get killed if they keep it up. They dart out in the road without looking and will play chicken when you drive by them. Its dangerous. I found out where one of the boys lived and went to talk to the parents and they acted like it was no big deal. We used to call the police but by the time they get here the kids are gone or they see the police car and take off down the trails they have just about everywhere. If anyone has an idea how to handle the situation we'd love to hear it. We're desperate.

Editor's note: I would advise you to call the Sheriff's Office rather than seek a personal action to handle the problem. You may think repeated calls do not work but there is a 4-wheeler sitting in the Sheriff's impound lot right now that says otherwise.

I just wanted to say congratulations on your son's graduation. My son Robert Smith has grown up with your son through elementary and high school. It was a great and exciting day yesterday watching that!  You did a great job with the coverage! Thank you so much for EdgefieldDaily.com!  I love it...and I love the Wandering Minds!  Keep up the good work and don't get discouraged! (PS..They pulled my son's diploma for a school fee, which he checked prior to the end of school and had no fees due. Gonna have to figure that one out)
Thanks again and Great work!!!

Editor's note: Thank you for your kind comments. Congratulations to your son as well. Though I do not allow names of individuals in the Wandering Minds I will make an exception for parents saying how proud they are of their own children for a short period of time. I never get discouraged, tired sometimes, bewildered often, but never
discouraged.

You always come down so  hard on the county council. Maybe you should be nicer to them and work with them to solve problems. You have very good ideas. Remember, you will catch more flies with honey than you will with vinegar.

Editor’s note: I am not trying to catch flies. I do support stopping the bull from dropping the manure on the citizens of this county that the flies come to feast upon.

I am one of Edgefield Daily's newest readers. I met the editor on the square on ETV day and he gave me his card and told me about the website. To you sir, Edgefield Daily is everything you promised. I have been reading through the archives and stay fascinated at the amount of information available. I have been reading back at the breadth of subjects covered in the Wandering Minds and learned things I never knew about my community. This may be my first entry in the Wandering Minds but it certainly will not be my last. This is a true public service. I frequent many websites and forums and admire the simple genius of the Wandering Minds.

Editor's note: You are far too kind. I am humbled and really do not know how to repond other than to say thank you.

Due to having our son, Matthew Blackwell, graduate ( I am so very proud of him) and the family over for a gathering afterwards, the reports are limited. It was midnight before I even began building the web site for today. Additional reports will be added during the day Saturday. I would also like to know how many graduates got the wrong diploma. I know at least two did. To the student with the initials RLT, we have yours. I hope the school did a better job of keeping up with grades and turned in books than they did with the diplomas.
web posted May 26, 2007

I saw you taking pictures of some of the kids in the rows during the graduation and you took some where my daughter was sitting. Can you look and see if you have one of her? Her name is (deleted). You took the pictures before they gave the diplomas if that helps.

I will try to locate one. I took over 100 pictures. Some were targeted, others were random shots. If anyone would like a CD of all the pictures you can e-mail me for more information at editor@edgefielddaily.com

I was at the graduation tonight and it was great. Our last graduated this year and it is such a proud moment for us. Thats not what I am writing about though. You are always hawking money for the sheriff's budget but parked right out front of the gate to the field was this big MOBILE COMMAND truck. That had to cost a pretty penny. Maybe the sheriff needs to spend the money he gets already on new deputies in stead of a mobile command truck.

Editor's note: The Mobile Command center was a retired armored truck used by banks and companies to transport money. It was donated to the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office did pay to outfit the truck with radios and electronics, the lights and paintjob. A great deal of that was done with grant money. It is a very valuable asset to the Sheriff's Office. I may do a feature on it to let people know what it is capable of. You would be impressed.

I don't know how someone could think we don't write in our comments to you. I send in one just about every other day if there is an interesting topic being discussed. Even when there is nothing of interest to me I still write in at least once a week. Somebody wil eventually say something dumb and I just have to comment. Thank you for the (Wandering Minds). It is very entertaining, interesting, informative, and a great place to blow off steam.

Editor's note: Those who say such things do so because they want that to be the case. That way they can dismiss all the grief elected officials get on the Wandering Minds as coming from me. They live in a fantacy world anyway- we can't afford four much needed deputies because recreation is getting about 300K- but coaches have to buy baseballs out of their own pocket. Most of all, thank you for your kind comments.

I am glad the Mayor has noticed the speeders. I am one of those people who will park my car and walk around town to do my errands.

Crossing the street near the town square can be very hazardous. Drivers make no attempt to slow down at all when they see you crossing the street.

It is as if you are interfering with their road. I thought vehicles where suppose to yield to pedestrians, not that I trust them to.

I think you are irresponsible for even having this page (Wandering Minds) on your website. Letting people slander people is going to get you sued if it hasn't already. I will never read this page of your website again. I enjoy the news but you should take this page off for good! You should never let people just say whatever they want and not have to say who they are. It is wrong!!! My name is (deleted).

Editor's note: Thank you (deleted) for reading EdgefieldDaily.com. I am a big supporter of the First Amendment and it does not say that you have to sign your name to your opinions on just about anything. Now, if you are going to make a judgment or accusations, you will do so in a letter to the Editor and sign your name. Many submissions never make it to posting, although they usually contain some really good information. After almost three years online I have a pretty good handle on who is having affairs with whom, who is mistreating their kids, cruel to animals, and a whole laundry list of other things.

We enjoy Edgefield Daily and you have mentioned Lick Fork Lake recently. We are rather new to the area and cannot find the lake listed on maps. We love boating and camping and Lake Thurmond is so crowded we thought maybe a lesser known lake may be more enjoyable. Can you give us directions? Thank you.

We also wanted to tell you when we moved here last year and met our neighbors we asked what the name of the local paper was and they said Edgefield Daily. We have been readers ever since.

Editor's note: Thank you so much for your kind comments. Lick Fork Lake is not a "lake" but a pond. There is camping, swimming, and fishing but not "boating". The Lick Fork Lake Park is located on Highway 230 just south of the intersection of Highway 230 and Highway 23 in the Sumpter National Forest. Highway 230 is also known as Martintown Road. It is a great location for family outings with a covered pavilion for larger functions like family reunions or gatherings.

I would encourage you to read all local publications including the Edgefield Advertiser and The Citizen News.

I went to the Johnston Peach Blossom festival this year for the first time in many, many years.  I was more than disappointed that the middle schools or high school bands were not in the parade.  As I understand it now they don't participate in the Christmas parades either.  Maybe next time they make their Christmas parade or festival parade plans they should contact the people in Graniteville and Langley, Bath, and  Clearwater to find out how its done.

Midland Valley High School,  Langley, Bath, Clearwater Middle School and  Leavelle McCampbell (Graniteville) Middle School march in both the LBC and Graniteville Christmas parades.(No matter what kind of beauty contest, ballgame or anything else going on at the schools that night-even if school is out for the holidays.)

How/why do the bands expect the community to support them if they don't support the community?
What is a parade when there is no band or bands to get you in a festive mood?
Like someone said "Van's the man" ask him, he knows how its done. (and he can do it well)

Editor's note: Nothing is swept under the rug. Sometimes a body will make so many questionable moves that they override each other that they have to be taken as a whole. Months ago I warned everyone of the mass resignations and the soon to follow questionable hirings. There is an old saying, when someone (or a government body) wants to hang themselves, give them all the rope they need. Then, tie the other end to the tree. There is still some slack in the rope right now. The best is yet to come.

In response to the article about The left exposes their hatred of Christians with the death of Rev. Falwell.  WOW, I didn’t realize the democrat base were so hateful and classless PLUS being athiests’.  They just fueled my resistance toward them.  I can see that there will be a lot more room in heaven than I thought.

I believe in the second coming of Christ and the anti-christ being on earth for those seven years, I see now he/she may already be here in the democrat party.  We all better be ready!

Editor's note: To accept the agenda of the left would be to do away with our Republic and replace it with first century sectarian law. How well did that work out back then? I thought the left was "progressive" not "regressive".

To the person concerned about their child getting in trouble for smoking and kids didnt for drinking, smoking is deadly too believe it or not.  Im not sure but you can correct me if im wrong you can get lung cancer from smoking!  Don't get me wrong drinking is wrong too, but are you saying that it is not wrong to smoke.  I am a teenager and personally I dont want to come across ANY teenager drunk or smelling like nicotine.  But I guess if you are letting your child smoke, then that $125.00 fine wouldnt be that bad considering how much your child spends in cigarettes going up in smoke!  And also it doesn't matter how many people know, if your child does wrong their going to get in trouble if they get caught.  You may think that your child is perfect, but what are they really doing when they are not with you.  How do you know that your child wasnt at that party that got raided?  Also I did some research and according to this link if you dont pay the fine if you are sentenced a court date your child would not be able to drive...think about it!

Editor's note: I personally have no problem with the fine for smoking and support the law. Although the fine is $25, not $125, and I do have a problem with parents being forced to appear rather than pay the fine and avoid court costs ($100). There is, in my opinion, no requirement to force a court appearance with the charge.

The Annual/Yearbook at MES is a big joke! I read the teacher's response as to the reason the book was not proofread.  The following comment on page 8 of the MES Annual was totally inappropriate.

"The Merriwether Rappers have found a unique way to supplement their meager teacher's pay!"

I see that none of these words were incorrectly spelled.  This is a yearbook for children not for teachers to make smart remarks about their meager teacher's pay!   If you have a  problem with your salary you need to take it up with the Edgefield County Board of Education and leave it out of the yearbook/annual.  The annual is 90% pictures!  How in the world could anyone overlook all the misspelled words????

I never received any letter or notice from the school asking for volunteers to help with the yearbook!  As a matter of fact, I started volunteering at another school this year because my son's teacher would never let me volunteer!

If these books were FREE then we would have no right to complain!

Regarding the Teacher of the Year selection process...I don't know how each school selects its teacher of the year, but at our school the faculty votes.  On our ballot were several teachers that I knew nothing about as teachers.  I had never been in their classrooms and had never personally seen any of them teach.  This is the case almost every year.  I started to vote for the one I liked the best outside of the classroom, and I realized how wrong that was, so I didn't vote at all.  I also realized that it has become a popularity contest because like I had been doing, some teachers vote for the person they like the best because they really don't know what's going on in other classrooms.  Maybe the process should be changed, and the administrators should choose.  After all, they're the ones who are supposed to know what goes on in all the classrooms.

Editor's note: By all means, don't ask the parents of students who would know who the best teacher is. That might take politics out of the equation.

I  find it humerous that you would use World Net Daily as a source of information.

It's right up there with Daily Kos.  Both crazy, just opposite ends of the spectrum.

Townhall.com and Democratic Underground.  Two more sites to fuel partisan politics that seperate Americans with more in common than either extreme is comfortable with.

I think about 70% of America is moderate.  We just hear from the vocal 30% that are on the extreme fringes of either side.  I find the extreme fringes to be similar in their distain for others and their hatred of freedom.

Why do you fuel partisan politics with links to sites on the right wing fringe?

Editor's note: The information I assume you refer to was an "Off The Wall" story (please note the name of the section).  I have also linked to far left web sites in reports. I am just being fair.

The point I was making was about the Marching Regiment is that it would be nice to see the Band in events in Johnston.  The Spring excuse is a sound one, however two-threes years ago the Band got back from Disney World two weeks before the festival, but the director at the time laughed and still refused to participate in the Peach Blossom Festival.

I agree that being in the band is hard work, I am just trying to make the point that Johnston in the past has given the Band opportunity in the Fall and Spring to March in its Parades and the Band still has not*t participated.  Like I said Van is the Man.  I hope he considers participation in Johnston in the future.

I'm hopeful this MP3 attachment made it through to you.  It is from a radio program I still listen to from So. California on KFI.Funny how our elected representatives thing they can leave the state and say anything they want without it coming back to haunt them.  I'm thinking of playing this for his "staffers" tomorrow when I call his office. (SC) Senator Graham recently spoke to an illegal activist group, notorious in So. California called "La Renza."  He was receiving an award from them for his tireless work on sponsoring illegal immigration legislation.  In the audio he calls ANYONE who opposes this legislation...bigots.  When you open it (the podcast is about 45 min long)....if you cue it to 13:30 and listen through 15:00....the DJ's cover the segment.  I'm hopeful you might be able to link this on your website.  Here is the link.

Editor's note: My understanding is the Hispanic group, supported by Democrats, is "La Raza" or "The Race". I can imagine what a group of white people calling themselves "The Race" would be called by the liberal media. Oh, wait, there is one in the US Congress that belonged to such a group, Sen. Bryd (D-Va), a former Ku Klux Klansman. I wonder why the media did not ask for his resignation when he referred to people as the "N-word" during an interview? I am sure it had nothing to do with the "D" in his party affiliation. I also wonder why La Raza was a part of the Democrats caucus on the amnesty bill they came up with. What's next? Including Al Quida members on anti-terrorism legislation debates?

As a parent of two children in the Marching Rebel Regiment band, I cannot help but comment on the recent accusations of our band not participating in recent parades and events. As one may or may not know, marching band is an extracurricular activity This activity ends at the end of football season. Our band does remain somewhat in tact to perform at Christmas  time if possible. But, much of that depends on if competition or playoff games are held on that same day. Our band has actually marched in the Christmas parade and then went directly to another event.

To keep a band in full marching order would require these kids to do nothing but band. Many of these kids find pleasure in other events such as sports and other forms of music as well. We cannot expect any kids to dedicate their entire life to one event.

If the writer feels that our band does not do enough for this county, then I invite you to come out two weeks before school starts and work with our kids in the sweltering heat and endless hours of practice to make us have a quality show. I invite you to work with these kids after school until 6:00pm and then go home with them to do homework or other practices, etc.

Come and volunteer your time in the concession stand at home games so that we can have money for uniforms and travel expenses. When you are ready to truly “feel the heat” of  being a member of this great group of kids, then I would feel that you would have room to criticize.

My hat is off to Mr. Clark and other teachers who make this program work year after year. I also congratulate these kids who work to give Edgefield County something to be proud of.

So if the writer feels the need not to buy fruit to support the band, then don’t do it. But don’t judge us just because we don’t march in one or two parades. But again, come out this summer and sit through one whole practice and then decide how you feel about buying fruit. But I am sorry that we don’t sale lemons, because that appears to be what you eat to make your attitude so sour.

In ref. to: "Also, Mr. Murph should be question, as to why, Mr. Bishop has more access to the school than any other parent."  (posted on 5/22)

Of course Murph should be questioned, but not only about that!  There are too many things to list or count!
This is exactly one of the reasons that the past principal was "let go"!  He refused to allow Danny Bishop to just run all over the school anymore.  He would not conform to what the 'Board' felt he should conform to and he cared about the students!  I can not believe it has taken other parents THIS LONG to finally realize that the Bishops and others do NOT need to be running FC!  I would love to really find out how many people actually voted for the new 'Board'!

We are now losing more teachers and admin. due to them not conforming to what the 'Board' expects. As it has been said by myself and others; "do we really want stepford teachers and admin.?" Do we???

I wish I could be at the meeting! I can not due to work.  I hope that every parent AND student would show up! Students can and should fight for their rights as students/people also.  I believe that they are told they have no rights so many times by certain people that they tend to believe that!  Please stand up and fight for our school!

I also attended Sunday's reception for Dr. Keesley.  It was a great tribute to her many years of service to our county.  There were many in attendance who had worked in our school district and still work here. I only wish our BOE chair knew who the A.D. and head football coach are.  The framed jersey was present to Dr. Keesley by Lee Sawyer, STHS's head football coach not Doug Painter the A.D. The "chair"  never even corrected the error once Coach Sawyer stepped up to the microphone.  Maybe she really doesn't know who these men are.

Dear editor,
In regards to your post of May 19th, there was a misunderstanding between Mr. Schneider and myself in the fee for Friday’s event.  Mr. Schneider assumed he was going to bring his sound equipment with him on Friday, thus his asking for payment.  When I confirmed to him that he did not need anything but his CD’s, he was OK with not being paid for his performance.  He was glad to be able to showcase his talents to other parts of Edgefield County.

Mr. Schneider I would personally like to apologize to you for any misunderstanding that you and the Chamber of Commerce may have had. We very much appreciate your providing entertainment for us at the ETV event on Friday. We look forward to having you perform for us again in the future.

I would appreciate your running this apology for us in your Wandering Minds section of your web site.  Thank you also for the wonderful exposure you gave us on the event for Friday.  You are so gracious in reporting the happenings the Chamber of Commerce has to offer.

Donna C. Livingston, Administrator
Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce

Editor's note: I have posted the above letter as requested, however, Donna Livingston was not the source for the post and, in fact, the information came from several sources including the parents of students at Fox Creek. Several other participants brought their own equipment and never asked for payment or even suggested such. If "someone" is falsely attributing this information to the Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce, of which EdgefieldDaily.com is a member, or Donna Livingston, they are sadly mistaken. If Mr.
Schneider is complaining, he may want to look within his own ranks first before pointing the finger at others.

To the parent that commented on their daughter being charged for smoking, I'm not a cop and I don't know how the letter of the law reads but I would think that unless the kids at the party were actually caught with a drink IN THEIR HAND, or IN THEIR VEHICLE, there would be no way to charge them with "minor in possession".  Therefore the only thing to do would be to call their parents to come get them.

BTW, you're setting a great example for your daughter by coming to an internet gossip forum and whining about somebody elses kids not getting charged, when your's did.  Its very "6th grade" of you.

It is a shame that people would hide behind the veil of anonymity in order to criticize people or an organization such as the PTO at MMS.  I am sure that some of your are the same ones, who when asked for help or to participate always have an excuse.  Instead, you wait in the background and blast away when the lights are turned off.   You SHOULD be ashamed of yourselves!  You have no idea how much these people have done for YOUR children and to improve the educational process at the school.  Why don’t you ask the teachers who are on the front line about the some of the improvements and technology equipment that has been purchased with the help of the PTO.  The PTO ladies have given up untold hours of their own time in order to help out in ANY way at the school.  Yes, this even means mowing grass and pulling weeds.  The school looks a thousand times better than it ever has.  It is a well known fact that when children are taught in an environment that is aesthetically pleasing that it can effect the learning process and instills pride.  Not to mention the effect that it has on the staff at the school!  Ladies, I would like to say thank you for all that you do and have done.  You have something that the FEW people who choose to stand in the background and kick dirt at you don’t have, and that is “CLASS”

The majority of those posts are regarding Fox Creek Charter High School from people claiming to be parents of students at the school. Let me remind everyone that the Fox Creek Charter School IS NOT a part of the Edgefield County School District. They are independent and the county school district has NO CONTROL over what they do. Naming parents involved with the school will never be posted. (18 posts denied) Please keep your comments based towards administrators or elected leaders or they will be deleted. I want you to have your say, but you must abide by the rules of the Wandering Minds. It seems the same rules are coming into play with MMS. (11 posts were rejected tonight due to naming individuals at the school.) I want you to voice your concerns. You can do it without naming those not elected or hired administratively by the voting public or making not so veiled comments referring to them.

If the Edgefield County School Board members are reading, please carefully consider your vote Tuesday night for the future principal at MMS.  Don't be too hasty to put someone in this position.  If the right candidate has not interviewed, then please continue to look.  We have a great school with a great group of parents and students and we need great leadership!

To address the MMS PTO issue I would like to say I feel the current leadership is not taking advantage of the talents and resources of many parents who would like to be involved.  Sure we are called to bring food but we are not welcome to be involved in events.  I know because I have repeatedly asked what can we do?  No, I am not going to mow the grass, because I pay taxes so that the school maintenance department can do that.  I agree the PTO has done some things for the betterment of our school, but I am very disappointed that the PTO is in direct conflict with the leadership of the school.  The PTO should be exactly what it was designed to be - a way to bring the parents and the school together.  A support system for the teachers and administration.  Please stop the fighting and lets do what is best for our children.  They are what are at stake here.  By the way, what do the by-laws of the PTO say about nominating and voting on PTO positions?

I applaud Edgefield on a great day Friday.  I am a lifelong resident of the county.  I simply want to know when the Strom Thurmond March Regiment will not  support Johnston during the Peach Blossom Festival. I
know they weren’t in Edgefield on Friday I am just trying to raise a question now so it can be worked on for next April. I have a family member who has been involved with the festival for 15 years.  Ever year the Strom Thurmond Band will not participate in the parade, and for 3 years they would not participate in the Christmas Parade that took place the Saturday after Thanksgiving.   It seems that ever year, the band except for the Championship Year, is at the Edgefield Christmas Parade. Yet the band never fears asking for support of trips from the Johnston Community by selling fruit door to door. The festival received support from other groups at the school, but that has dwindled to nothing in the last few years.  I hope that with Van being the Man now he will consider participating in years to come.  Go Rebels and God Bless Our County

The comments being made about the PTO  at MMS are right on the money. It's not that these people haven't worked hard. It's not that they don't give a lot of their time...that can't be denied. However, the issue is that they have overstepped their bounderies. The PTO officers have no respect for those running the school. It's been this way for the past several years...this year being the worst. They choose to do things without consulting with administrators,  teachers, or other PTO members. What gives them this authority? They also bad mouth administrators and teachers out in the community. I've personally heard it on several occasions. Does our school really need this negativity?  We need positive people in our schools. We need people who are willing to work WITH those running the school rather than against them. Bad mouthing the principal and teachers isn't healthy for any school.  I think the point that the person (who wrote the initial comment) was trying to make was this: The PTO at MMS needs to be revamped. There needs to be some guidelines. There are MANY other parents who would like to be involved. However, these parents also know that a PTO is supposed to operate a certain way, and MMS needs to look at the way their PTO operates.  It's definitely time for  changes in the PTO at MMS.

It appears that a very good plan has been put in place by some of the officers of the MMS PTO to get positive remarks in their favor.  I know firsthand that my wife was told she was not needed to assist in a function due to the fact the president liked to do everything herself.  The more that is written and said about the whole PTO affair tends to raise questions that need the hard answers.  Why someone would want to control the entire organization from planning to implementation of all activities including but not limited to the day to day functions and effectiveness of the administration and faculty?  (Deleted)  I have never seen a balance sheet to know where my dues have been dispersed.  I know I could ask for this but feel that a well organized group such as a school PTO should give periodic updates as the status of the organization.  I know they have asked my assistance with fundraising donations but struggle with this as I am not sure how the funds will be spent.  All members should be given a copy of the bylaws and have the opportunity to discuss in an open forum.  Do we have term limits?  If not they should be amended into the bylaws as we all know it is very difficult to have a despot removed especially if the members are run off from the organization.  The diversity of the PTO leadership is very “vanilla” which is appalling since we do have diversity within our school family.  Where is the equity for equal representation?  There are a lot of questions, but we do not have anyone prepared to step forward with any answers.  The process is broken and has to be fixed immediately for the sake of our school and children.  There is a large group of parents prepared to step up and correct this situation but are being “walled off” by the current leadership.

I never knew “Wandering Minds” existed until some friends were distraught over one person’s opinion concerning MMS PTO.  I know most of the people associated in this group and think they are doing an excellent job.  I am not a stay at home mom and appreciate the time they take.  Maybe if the one who is complaining would put their energy in helping and not try to persuade any one who will listen of their opinion, something more positive would take place.  No good will come from negative comments.  One’s experience should not be judged by another persons experience or opinion.  Complainers are neither solution makers nor peace makers.  As far as the PTO president stepping down, she has really put her heart into things and it has been for the benefit of the students and the pride of MMS.  Am I a personal friend of the PTO president?  No; however, I am very aware of the efforts made by all the volunteers involved.  Kudos to her efforts.  Please settle your own frustrations and limits before you try to slander others efforts.

Also, those who have issues with FCHS, shame on you.  Great efforts are being made and this is for the community and children in the community.  It seems now a days, people are distracted by their own short comings and need to blame others.  I say grow up and remember would any of you act this way if Jesus was standing beside you?  Where will any of your negative comments and attitudes take you?  The same goes for the MMS PTO basher.  Maybe prayers are in hand.  This isn’t a popularity contest.  As a matter of fact, it is very unselfish to commit to supporting MMS and FCHS schools and the volunteer giving their time.  Remember, it is not about you as a person and what you can get out of things, it is about giving!!

Why are we arresting kids with a cigarette and not kids drinking beer? I'd rather meet a kid with a cigarette in their mouth than a kid that is drunk. I guess it all comes down to who you are and who you know. It must be nice to have connections.

Editor's note: I assume you refer to the party raided earlier this month. I have no answer as to why minors in possession of alcohol were not charged.

Anyone notice how the new county administrator seems to be turning a deaf ear to the citizens of this county?  I hope he doesn't start wearing suspenders and using profanity.  However, the Eddie Munster hairline might look good on him.  Is the county cloning Administrators or is this a bad version of The Stepford Administrators?

Shame on you! MMS has some stay at home moms who choose to stay at home and not have enough initiative to make copies ,help their childs grade level
team and too busy staying home in their cave while the world continues to move outside their walls.
When you involve yourself and choose to work in the trenches because you decide to move not be asked ,then you can spout your mouth. Not to a paper but to a real live person. If you choose to wait for the world to ask you . You'll be left far behind.People need to realize that this world does not revolve around them. GROW-UP APPLY YOURSELF. DON'T WAIT TO BE ASKED.
One thing is true, volunteers do not get paid. As parents who can afford to stay home you should be teaching your children to GIVE TO OTHERS ! Stop thinking so much about yourselves and do for the entire MMS staff. The real decision you and our communty need to make is when will everyone grow up and get out of their comfortable bubble and decide to stop bickering. Work together ! (content deleted)

W's director of faith based policy said this about Falwell. The commentator is an Evangelical Christian.

I guess since he blasts Falwell, he hates all Christians, too.

Falwell was an extremist that gave true believers in Jesus a bad rep.  Hatred and intolerance is not what Jesus preached.  But Falwell sure did.

I think it is time for the PTO president to step down at MMS. This is a volunteer position and this person is way out of line. A PTO president is suppose to support the school and administration. I agree that a lot has been done for the beauty of the school, but when there started to be a conflict with the principal. The PTO president should have stepped down. The principal is there to promote the learning environment at all costs.
I feel the principal has made some GREAT changes this year. I know her leaving is directly related to the PTO president treatment of her. Furthermore, I heard the PTO president first hand bad mouth the principal to the former principal of MMS at the JET and MMS football game. Also, during the open house she wasted time at opening remarks by telling everyone she was tired of hearing about MES and how wonderful they are. She continued to say these are not cute five year olds with bows, they are hard to love at this age. Well, she can talk about her feelings....but I love my teenager!!!
STEP DOWN PTO PRESIDENT!!! It is time for a new era. We need to support the new principal with out old baggage.

Good morning.....I would like to take this opportunity to respond to the person writing in concerning the MMS PTO.  I am the President of this seemingly "horrible" group of people who work tireless, countless hours, expend time, energy, resources and are truly dedicated to Merriwether Middle School. We are constantly trying to raise money for OUR school by sending out numerous letters and making numerous phone calls throughout the year...yes, even during the summer.  You are very accurate in your observation that the "same group" of people are doing things.  That is definitely not intentional...just seems to work out that way that the same people are offering to help.   If we have somehow overlooked your offers for assistance, we are sorry.  I work full time and rely heavily upon "Stay-At-Home" moms to do things during the day.

Since you have two children attending MMS, I hope that you do receive your Newsletters and attend functions and have read and heard the plea to come to us if you have questions, concerns, comments, ideas, or the desire to help.  You do not need a personal invitation to help out...just come up and ask "What Can I Do?".   I will not be a participant of "mud slinging" this way.  I invite you to meet with me and Rhonda Monday at 3:15 p.m.  We can't do it earlier because we will be working very late tonight and the Formal Dance is tomorrow.   You are more than welcome to show up tonight and help us decorate; show up Friday to help us set up for the dance, chaperone, work the food table, clean up; then show up Saturday and/or Sunday to help take all of the decorations down and clean up the gym.   Then, I further invite you to help my husband and I to mow the courtyard, pull weeds, clean the filters in the pond and water the flowers which is needed quite frequently, especially during the Spring and Summer.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Editor's note: I have not confirmed that the writer is the actual MMS PTO president. Other comments from the same reader were not posted due to a one post per reader per day limit.

I read the story on the sex crimes with young girls. I am stunned. When I was 12 or 13 the only thing i was worring about was if I had the latest Barbie doll. What happened to our girls? Now they are sneaking out of the house to have sex with GROWN MEN!!!!!!!!!! Where the (heck) are the PARENTS? I think everyone involved should go to jail. Why isn't this in the papers?

Editor's note: I know that at least one local paper was made aware of the situation in Johnston when I was informed. I have no idea why they did not disseminate the information.

I have two children who attend MMS. When they were at MES, I was very involved in the PTO . There were MANY parents who participated in functions and who helped in many ways around the school. I am a stay-at-home mom and have always enjoyed doing volunteer work within the school.  However, since my children arrived at MMS, I have sent in "paperwork" to help with PTO, and I  have offered my services on many occasions, but I am never called upon. I'd like to know who decides the PTO officers? Are these voted on? Shouldn't they be? Do the teachers/administrators/other parents  have ANY input? Is there a faculty representative? Shouldn't there be? After all, it is a parent-TEACHER-organization. Who decides who will work at certain functions (such as dances, teacher luncheons, etc...)? It appears to many parents (of other students there) that the same group of parents do EVERYTHING and do not WANT others to help. For if we did, these mommies would no longer feel as though they are "in charge". These parents need to remember that they are simply PTO...they are NOT teachers, they are NOT administrators, and they are NOT paid employees of the school district. Offering to help at your child's school is one thing...showing up DAILY and sticking your nose where it doesn't belong is something else. I know these people are there everyday because my children see them. One even asked me if so-and-so's mom had a job at her school because the woman is there constantly. Let the administrators and teachers do their jobs. They will ASK when they need something. THAT is the role of a PTO within a school. If you want to make all of the decisions and be with your child throughout the school day, then maybe you should consider home-schooling. Then, you can make all the decisions!  In the meantime, let parents (like myself) help. We'd also like to show OUR children that we have an interest in THEIR schooling. Something needs to be done about the current PTO situation at MMS. I know there are other parents who feel the same way I do.

I was driving on Sweetwater Road this past Wednesday morning when I was almost in a head-on collision with the tree service trucks. One of their trucks was parked in front of the LARGE house(with the cows) trimming the trees touching the power lines, they had absolutely no signs up saying "one lane road or flagman ahead, or even a Men Working" sign put up. Just as I crested the top of a small hill and came up on them their other trucks were coming around the cones, in my lane, I had to slam on the brakes in order to stop in time to give them room to get around. After I did, I hit the horn and being the gentlemen that they are, they to hit the horn and waved at me(they didnt exactly use all their fingers). I guess it was my fault they were breaking the law. I called the sherriff's department to tell them abou the dangerour situation (the only signage up was coming from NA side and it was about 20 yards from where they were working but no one  to flag traffic. When I called the sheriff dispatch I gave them the name of the property owner that the truck was in front of (I couldnt remember the cross road nearest and I thought everyone in Edgefield county knew that property) but when I told them (deleted: the owner of the) house, she said "I am not familiar with that, I dont know where that house is located." OK, I understand not knowing where ole man such an such store USED to be, but come on, this is a large house and if you have ever been on Sweetwater Road you have to know it.Dispatch got an attitude I couldnt give them an exact location, I couldnt' find numerics and really didnt think about needing them. Dispatch can't know the location of every road, store in the county but somethings should be a no brainer. Unless you aren't from the county.

I can*t figure why no more girls play softball.  It is great for girls.  Why do we have 2 soccer season?  The reason I am asking or making a point is that is we only have a fall season of soccer then maybe we could have more girls softball teams, and we would not have to travel all over the Ridge to play Softball.  If we had four more teams we could have a more competitive local league.   I would also like to think all the coaches and other volunteers that make our little leagues work.  Nick is doing a good job too!

I know we have laws to protect the innocent but it seems that many of these girls would be anything but innocent. The girls in the situations described need to be punished also. I don't know what the law is on that. Even tough they are underage, they also are at fault. I would not consider them to be victims. There are many young girls that are victims of this kind of crime. Their stories are very different.

I know there will always be at least two sides to every story.  However, with so many examples: Every time I read the posts in the Wandering Minds about the County Council; County Administrator; County Managers, especially the Assessor; Appeals Board and Developers I cannot help but be reminded of the truism “Watch what you say and do”.  “Intelligent speaking means being focused, articulate and knowledgeable, and being a good listener.  Because actions often speak louder than words, treating people with respect and keeping an open mind are essential.”

Also,  “As the year began and after many discussions about taxes, budgets, and elections many in Edgefield County held out a little hope for a responsible, businesslike approach to the “art’ of governing.  One thing you would expect a business-oriented group to do well – developing a responsible budget.  There appears no other way to describe the Council’s sessions except with words such as ‘disorganized’ and ‘disappointing.”  I will let someone else, certainly not me, use the word “disastrous.”

There is always hope, but the chaos of past events does not bode well for the future.

Maybe EdgefieldDaily should start conducting very specific polls.  The results could be sent to the involved parties, including copies to the State Government Representatives and Oversight Departments.

Editor's note: And yet they get re-elected every two years.

I reviewed the budget you posted recently (Cutting wants to provide for needs) and was surprised by the number of lines listed as 'miscellaneous'.  As a bookkeeper, I was always taught that anything over $100.00 in a budget is not miscellaneous, but an expected expense and should be detailed as such.  To have $160,000 + dollars as miscellaneous is ridiculous.  I want to see this line item detailed.  I agree with your post regarding where the savings could pay for the extra deputies needed.
Also, I saw $30,000 for an employee for Bettis Park.  Who is this employee and what do they do??
I thought the Recreation Director was responsible for all of Edgefield County.  Why is an additional person listed just for Bettis Park??
Thanks for keeping us informed!

Editor's note: The proposed cuts were found only on a cursory review of the budget. A more in depth review shows far more problems with waste and questionable funding.

After reading your "cutting wants" editorial I looked at the budget and the links you have online and I want to know what the "special contracts" listed are buying. The miscellaneous funds are incredible and unjustifiable by any measure, but the special contracts seem to go even further into unexplained expenditures. Do you have an accounting of what these contracts are for or are they just lumped together in ambiguity? There must be some documentation of the expenditures.

As to the break ins in Saluda County - they reported at least three burglaries within an hour or two on Monday morning in the area of Long Cane Road on the Saluda and Edgefield County Line. One was to the home of a Saluda County reserve deputy where guns were stolen. Also stolen was a 12 week old pit bull puppy from one of the homes. For all Edgefield County Citizens – how many ways can the County Assessor and Appeals Group use to determine unequal unfair market values?  If I understand your message on May 14th, the Appeals Group used the last County Appraisal (cost to build or replace) plus 3% increase for each year after that to determine your (Edgefield Daily Editor) value – If this is a fact - Then, the County should and must go back and base all properties in Edgefield County this way.  I believe the Appeals Group and the Assessor (I’m sure they were together in this) have set a precedence and by using this method would create a fair and equitable method for all citizens.  All properties would have an increase of 0 to 15%, depending on the last appraisal year (2002 – 2006 – state required 5 year period), no if and buts and all properties would be treated the same.  (Strange – but is this not what the citizens of South Carolina voted into law last year) – What are we missing?  When will the Council and Mr. Pettigrew start being concerned about the treatment of citizens in Edgefield County when it comes to the Assessor and the Appeals Group?  Council and Pettigrew, check this out.  If this is a factual account of how fair market value was determined then do what is right and redo all properties the same exact way.      Strange, but I had asked my fair market value to be determined this exact way and was told no because the new law did not take place until 2007.       When is enough – enough…..

Editor's note: That is the figure (3%) that was stated by the members of the Tax Appeals Board during our meeting. We too are having a hard time using their statements as a guide to the basis of taxation. I did tell the board that I would accept a comparison of two properties on Murrah Road, both brick houses owned by the Hixon family, as a square foot comparison for taxes even though our house is not brick. It would lower our taxes by 50% or more. I guess since we are not "politically connected" we are not eligible for such special treatment. Maybe the judge will see it differently. If they think the few examples shown are the only ones available, they have another thing coming. You always save the best for last.

Thank you for being the only (media) that is willing to list what is actually going on in this county. I feel sorry for those who have to live here and can't afford to leave. Editor's post: I have received the answer from our tax appeal. The board agreed the comps were useless and stated our last assessment was basically $117,000 at the meeting. (Odd, because I seem to remember the agreed disputed amount then being $107,000, $7,000 over the cost of building the home in 1999) They also stated in the meeting that with a 3% growth in value each year (of the 117k figure) the assessment was "pretty close" to what was assessed, and in the end sided with the county. (Big surprise there folks!) However, even if our previous assessment was $117,000, and a 3% growth each year would be an increase in value of $3,520 a year, why are they taxing us on the past years growth... and the next six years, all at once? The only way they can support their position is to admit that the rate of growth they stated is taxing us for growth that has not occurred, and will not occur until the year 2013. Needless to say the decision is being appealed, again.

What always amazes me about FCHS’s voting practices is that that still fail to promote their yearly board election.  If FCHS gave their school board election the kind of advertising they do their MS. Fox Creek Pageant, they might get more people out to vote.  I would also like to know, with 115 ballots cast, how they averaged 8.635 votes per ballot.  Did they not even instruct the voters on how many board positions were open so they were aware how many they could vote for?  They are allowed 13 positions for that school board, BUT, each candidate must have at least 58 votes to be eligible.  Is that standard voting practice or was that creative thinking?  It has been my experience that those people like to play games; FBI, power games, head games, and “let’s keep up with the Joneses’”.  What they do not like to do is be accountable, sincere, or honest, especially when the buck stops in front of their seat.  It is unfortunate, because, eventually everyone pays the piper, and the longer you delay the larger the bill.  Surely no one is stupid enough to keep being Mrs. Bishop’s “free labor” as she calls them.  Mrs. Bishop shows up only to sit at the head of the “throne”.  She is NOT going to lower herself to do any real work.  Daddy taught her better than that and that fruit did not fall far from the tree.  Her husband shows up for his own reasons.

I am so sick of hearing about FCHS.  I am proud that several people are really seeing that this is just basically a "Big Kid Day Care" and are pulling their children.  I am quite certain that the reason why most people send their children there is the distance and that it is "convenient".  That is where the PARENT needs to wake up....sometimes doing the easiest thing is not the best for the child. How do you explain kids who come there because they had a choice of getting expelled from a nearby high school making horrible grades and then the parents send him to FCHS and WOW, the kid has been transformed and is making straight A's!!  Another example is another kid transferring to FCHS with horrible grades for the past three years, transfers to FCHS and "Graduates With Honors"....how can you wipe out three years of bad grades and turn it all around and graduate with honors???  Parents, there are options out there for you...if you are dead set against STHS, look elsewhere.  Do you ever wonder why your kids "love" it there?? Is it because they do what they want to do?? I've heard actual FCHS students say "We don't have rules at my school!"; We get to sit and text message and use our phones when we finish our work; We can sleep in class and that there are even teachers who take a nap!  We do what we want to do there.  These are comments made by actual students and it's not second hand.  Opening FCHS destroyed any chance of another high school (real high school) to ever have a chance of being built.  Do you imagine your child in a real school, with real lunches provided, real extracurricular choices; a guidance counselor; a school with people who can keep the school clean and sanitary; safe parking; not run by a "close knit" group with ties that bind? one that the principal is not a puppet for the Board?  Think About It!!!

Once again Fox Creek parents have done themselves in.  Voting Sherolyn Bishop back onto the board is like signing Fox Creeks death warrant!  We will never get anywhere with her still in charge.  Every person on that board now is a loyal Bishop lover!  There is NO way that this election was legal, not that any of them probably have been! This group will be loyal to both Bishops and the AD and that is it!

We had some great people running that really care about the students and the school itself, not just how much money it can bring in!  We need real teachers and a real school, now we will never get those things.

Sherolyn Bishop, Jim Oliver, Vernon Ball, Ashley Williams, Sharon Reese, Steve Elliot, Rod Huffman & Terri Mayson.

I was curious about your story concerning the “Future Organ Donors”. If by chance you didn’t look BEHIND you when you were attempting to make your left hand turn and not known these idiots were flying up behind and around you, whose fault would it have been if you would have hit them?   A story ran about a man in a pickup truck making a left hand turn with another truck behind him and a deputy behind him.  The deputy passed at the same time the leader was making his (alleged) legal turn and hit him.   The story said the lead driver making the turn was at fault!!  WHAT?, that the officer had established his pass in the other lane when the leader turned.  I thought you kept your eyes on the road where you are going, not where you have been.   I also didn’t think you were supposed to pass more than one vehicle at a time.  I don’t know, what is the law?

Editor's note: In case you did not read the commentary, the event took place in a curve and passing is not allowed on double yellow lines. The fact I did notice the idiots is the only reason they were photographed alive, not dead after bouncing off trees at 90 mph.

Well Well.... it is no surprise who made the school board.  Of course it seems Mrs. Bishop friends have shoved her down the throat of enough people who knew no better.  Now we all know that the land for the new FCHS was secured with money from her parents, because they made sure we knew. Quite touching right before the elections.  And if every one is wondering why Dr. Murph is (such) buddies with the AD it is because we now have three coaches on the board out of eight. Oh  yea it was his wife who told her students to tell their parents to make sure they voted today for Bishop because her mommy and daddy paid for the land for the new school.   For the parents that are upset with the new board, if you did not vote then you have no right to voice your opinions.

I agree that more money should go towards teacher salaries but what about the school administrators who are in the trenches day to day with children, teachers and parents who arrive at work before 7:00 am and do not leave until after 5:00pm? District administrators report to work at 8:00am, have an hour for lunch and can leave at 4:00 each day.

Another interesting thought - all the principals hired within the last two to three years are being paid huge salaries while the other principals remain on the school districts salary schedule for building school administrators.   The principal's salary schedule is meager compared to surrounding school districts.  I am not saying the new hires do not deserve their salaries; however, the school board promised these principals larger salaries if they would take the job. How about the school administrators who have faithfully served the district year after year without even getting a cost of living raise?   Perhaps all administrative salaries should be posted but be careful when requesting the information.  The salary schedule they might provide will not accurately report the salaries of whom the school board handpicked for positions within the last few years.

The last left turn before the long right curve up the hill on the way to 28 was the crash site.  I didn't hear any emergency vehicles when I was checking on our cows.... so I don't think that they were hurt - just a banged up bike and a big story to tell I guess.

I am really confused about what is going on in the school district.  I was told that there is a hiring freeze imposed on the school district yet there is all this "offering " of positions and increase of salary along with the offer.  In your article about the questions surrounding the hiring of Brightharp, there are five positions being offered which appear to be "administration" jobs not counting the Human Resources position.  I don't care about superintendents or directors or chiefs nor do I give a rip about human resources.  My concern is the quality and quantity of those who are teaching my child, day in and day out.  Our children probably could not tell you who Sharon Keesley or Angela Cooper or Myrtis Brightharp are.  They don't matter to my child nor do they contribute to their day to day education.  School board members, could we please focus on what's important and direct our resources that way?  The teachers are the ones impacting our children on a daily basis and it is their credentials we should be concerned about.  Teachers are the support beam of the school system.  If the support beam is weakened enough, the whole works craters and all the directors, chiefs and superintendents are useless.

I am a teacher in the ECSD and we got an interesting memo from our principal this week.  According to the ECSD human resources director and the chief financial officer, the schools have been placed under a hiring freeze due to a lack of ability to balance the budget.  At our school, that means three teachers who are not returning, as of right now, will not be replaced.  For the remaining teachers, this means more students in our classrooms.  Unfortunately, the children will be the ones to pay the price.  Overcrowded classrooms usually means lower student achievement.  I have to wonder: Maybe the budget cannot be balanced because of the following factors: our school board members are among the highest paid in the entire state of South Carolina (And by the way, they recently approved an additional $100  payment for themselves for each nonscheduled meeting they have to attend!), and some of the new members of the district administrative staffs are being paid more than the state average (much more) for their positions.  I know, it has all been said/heard before, but I wish the parents of the children of Edgefield County would go to the school board meetings and demand better for their children.  The ECSD should spend your tax money hiring strong, effective teachers for the children; instead of padding their own wallets.

Editor's note: Only 40% (give or take) of the money collected in taxes for education is actually used for the education of students. How mad would you be if only$12 of the $30 of the gas you paid for actually went into the tank of your car?

Last night, WRDW reported on the shooting of an Aiken woman in the back with her own shotgun.  When WRDW gave the description of the suspect it included everything but the race of the suspect.  When I called WDRW and spoke to Laurie Ott, she said it was the news directors policy not to give the race and then I was hung up on.  I propose a boycott of WRDW until they change their policy to be one of real journalism, one that gives all the facts, not just what they want you to know.

Editor's note: I did not see the report and have no idea if this is in fact the case. Media outlets have no problem giving the race of a suspect police are looking for and I have seen such on WRDW and other media outlets.

I do know that a BOLO (be on the lookout) was sent out by Aiken County Wednesday afternoon for a shooting suspect decribed as a black male wearing brown or dark pants and a white t-shirt driving a blue 1996 Chevy 1500 pick-up truck with a camper shell on the back with SC tag # 880 UCY. Maybe they don't have one so they haven't traveled to the lovely south end of our county. They should ask someone to take them riding one day so they can see all the new subdivisions going up. They could get a police scanner and listen to all the calls the deputies have. They could try talking to a dog tired deputy next time they see one if they even have time to stop taking calls to talk to them. To the person that says the county hasn't grown in 30 yrs maybe you should worry about your family being protected more then what the clerks in the court house are making. Don't you think??

To the reader upset that the kids weren't arrested at the party for beer...If a kid is still a juvenile (under 17),
the common action is to petition the child to DJJ (they have jurisdiction over juveniles).  If a blue ticket had
been written, court date set, juvenile doesn't show up, the Magistrate can't sign a bench warrant on them .... so the case is then sent to DJJ (like going around the world to get next door).  If the kid does show up for Magistrate court, they can only accept a monetary fine...no jail can be given due to being a juvenile.  The state legislature made a special law on the tobacco for only the Magistrate to have jurisdiction.

I hope that the school board now realizes that the citizens of edgefield county are concerned over our schools and want to see the best for our students. I was very interested in your column (Monday). I will say that I am assuming that what you said took place actually took place and that there were only three deputies working at the time. You are obviously a very strong supporter of the Sheriff and I do not hold that against you. I voted for him and plan to continue to support him. What I would like to know is how three deputies were able to cover all those problems, and more so you said, in such a short time?

Editor's note: Yes, I am a strong supporter of the three basic needs of this county; Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement. Everything else is a convenience or a "want". I want a big screen plasma TV but if I can't afford a lock for my door what good is it?

To the deputies: They did not cover all those calls alone. Additional deputies and supervisors were called into duty as they so often are to fill the voids.
Supervisors do not get paid overtime. The amount of overtime paid to current deputies responding off duty last year would have paid for three additional full time deputies. Food for thought, we are already paying for them, why don't we have them?

My kids came home today telling me the police raided a big drunken party in Merriwether Saturday night and that a lot of their friends got arrested. One of them was a kid of a very prominate family in Edgefield, (Name removed) and they said he got caught with a bunch of cocaine! They also said other kids were arrested for pot and for having beer. You seem to know just about everything that goes on around here, do you know about this? I'm told they covered up the arrest of (name removed) because of his daddy. My son said the parents allow this kind of stuff all the time. Did they arrest the parents of the ones throwing the party? If they didn't, they should have. How does this happen?

Editor's note: The teen you mentioned has not been arrested. An article was taken as evidence and will be tested for cocaine. If it comes back positive, I feel certain a warrant will be issued. It took deputies over ten hours to sort the whole thing out. I guess the kids were up for an all-nighter, and got one - just not the one they were planning on.

To the parent or parents knowing about the party. I have no idea if they allowed the party to take place. The homeowner did not arrive until 6 am Sunday and said he knew nothing about the party being held. What I do know for a fact is that at least two parents met with Sheriff Dobey over a year ago claiming frequent underage drinking parties being held at the home.

I do know that several years ago my wife and I were called to the home by our oldest daughter, then 16, who went to a party at the home and wanted to leave because everyone was drinking and her ride would not leave to bring her home. We picked her up and observed several teens we knew personally drinking in the back yard. I did not see the parents, but my wife spoke to one of the parents to confirm they would be there when our daughter asked to go to the party before we gave our permission days beforehand.

Of course, the bigger party was in the Millcreek Subdivision where at least 40 carloads, some 120 to 150 teens, were leaving after news of the other party getting raided spread and a crash near the entrance of the subdivision scared even more. I do not have the physical location of that party. I was assisting in directing traffic as the State Trooper investigated the crash near the entrance of the subdivision.

Well my friend that is way far from the truth. The officers have so much to do that they may have to work several hours of overtime to just catch up on the "pending calls". Trust me i have given out a lot of those since i have been dispatching. So I know what they are going through and I hope the council will give them what they need and deserve, because i think that everyone in the county will benifit from it.

The whole point is that you do not have to go into attack mode, and your points will still be valid.  You're so anti-FCHS, you (and at least one of your readers) jumped to the conclusion that it was in support of the school and the principal.  It is not, by a long shot.  You missed a more important issue--There is no cafeteria.  There won't be a cafeteria, or a new school for that matter.

Larger, more important issues are so easy to report.  And they're actually meaningful.  If reported accurately, things could really change.  Imagine that.

I have friends and family in Edgefield so I always get enjoyment reading the Edgefield Daily .  I am guite concerned over the Annual budget controversy noted in your May 2nd column.  How in the world can the Sheriffs office hire 12 new duputies for a county that hasn't increased in population in the last 30 years when they can't even pay the clerks  that work in the front office even half of what they should be making? The county has hired new people and brought them in with no back ground experience or Education for a job (
County Tax Asessor) who has brought total turmoil to the Residents in Edgefield.  How can you justify raising taxes to 5 times what it should be  on homes just because you choose not to grow in population and not sell some of the properties so you can build up this County.  A few Residents cannot carry to load for all the unnecessay people you are hiring at the courthouse and the Sheriffs Office.  The Clerks who work really hard have been there for years and have received no raises .  At least they are qualified for the positions they are in.  I think they really need to re-asess where the real priorities are and do something about it. Homeowners in Edgefield  County were billed outrageous taxes.  Has this Tax Acccesor been fired yet because it is quite obvious they were not qualified to do tax assessments.

Winning isn't everything or at least it shouldn't be. When a child signs up for a sport, it's because they have a desire to play, not sit on the bench and watch others play. Thank goodness there are coaches who care about the child's wants instead of just winning.

Sometimes it would be better if you would report an entire story with both sides included when you editorialize FCHS.  You might be surprised to find that people would wind up with the same conclusions, and you will look more like professional journalist instead of a hothead with a grudge.  Sometimes you report that the school will not respond, yet you say that you have sources to confirm/discredit "rumors".

An example of this is when you commented (I believe) on the questionable relationship between the principal and the athletic director.  There have been several posts since then.  A recent one is about going out to lunch daily.  This is unfair.  The principal is often in charge of selling out the fast food to students at lunch.  All staff must find lunch somewhere.  There is no cafeteria.  There are no plans to have a cafeteria in the new school (which is still a dream of the school's "founding fathers").  One, or both, of them HAVE to go out to get something for most of the staff when they do get the chance.

This is the type of stuff that can get you kudos for being fair and balanced.

Editor's note: You are confusing reports with Wandering Minds posts by readers. Reports, which are listed on the Headlines page, are the ones where FCHS refuses to comment so the story can only be reported as "one sided" and it is so noted. Comments, such as the one you refer to as a "report" by me, was made by a FCHS parent in the Wandering Minds. As far as "editorializing" Fox Creek, that is an opinion held by the Editor and is supposed to be "one sided" and is presented as an "opinion". Anyone with a differing opinion is welcome to submit a letter to the Editor to counter any opinions held by the Editor.

I also have heard that the board gave themselves a raise.  Are they not already one of the HIGHEST paid boards in the state?  The citizens of Edgefield County are really getting ripped off by this bunch, especially with the recent decisions they made!  Maybe we should pay them to resign.  We might be better off.

Editor's note: I will send the proper FOIA to get the information you request. Yes, the ECBOE is one of the highest paid in the state.

What a touching article in the Edgefield Advertiser about the STHS girls basketball coach leaving and returning to Saluda.  I thought she was a volleyball coach also, but there was no mention of that or her talking to volleyball players who had played for her and getting their reaction.  I know why, there would have been NO CRYING.  I don't know her personally, but I do know she was a terrible volleyball coach and if she would have given more effort to them, they might have won more games.  Please don't somebody write and tell me I don't know what I am talking about because I sat at many a game and watched her put in basketball players who could not play volleyball.  Her agenda was to have her basketball players on the team so they could be ready for basketball, which is fine, but some of them should have been on the bench and not playing period.

Hopefully, the school will now hire a volleyball coach who really cares.  Basketball is not the only sport where a scholarship can be gotten.

I do agree with the county implementing a merit based performance increase for County employees.
This is important along with a candid review with each employee in order to increase performance and obtain a happy work environment.

However, I do hope that the reviews are performed as such and not as an opportunity to gain favor in certain positions with certain people.

I would like to see our new administrator be fair and candid when conducting the reviews and not reward those such as Ms. Keisha Bryant who obviously cannot complete the job with competence. These matters should be addressed.

As well, 3% increase is really sad - with inflation rate at 2.5% for 2006 a hard working employee does not stand a chance of getting ahead.

I honestly feel that our County has their priorities out of order and should take a deeper assessment of the county budget.

The 2006-2007 yearbook for Strom Thurmond High School has been given out to the students.  There are about 67 Seniors that didn't have their pictures in the yearbook.  They did everything that was asked but some how their pictures were not in the book.

This is a very special time in the life of the Seniors at Strom Thurmond High School  My heart goes out to them because they all looked forward to their Senior year.  Can you imagine how disappointed they were to get their yearbook and their picture not be their.  I have been out of school for over 25 years and I still go back and look at it to remember my school days.

It is my understanding that the administration says their is nothing they can do to correct this problem.  Can you investigate and see what happened and maybe get the district off to do something for these students?

Thank you for you time and help in this matter.

Editor's note: There is not much that can be done for a yearbook already published.

Dear Mickey and Donald,
I'm so very excited to hear that the two of you are running for County Council and the School Board.  Y'all are probably over-qualified, but please don't let that stop you!  I'm just thrilled to know that things may be looking up soon, that is if the school district hasn't "gone to pot" by then.  Oh, and Donald, don't worry about the pay for the School Board.  It's pretty darn good per meeting and if you're having a tough month, just call a "special" meeting and you get more money!  Another tip, just get real cozy with Mr. Bibbs and he can guide you on how to take many trips, get room upgrades, and even travel out of state!  The one real problem I see for you is the color of your feathers.  You may want to look into dying them which would get you support from Bibbs, Cooks and Chitty.  You see, Ms. Cooks does look at color and Mr. Chitty votes with her so that she and Mr. Bibbs will in turn vote with him on Fox Creek issues (which is all Chitty is concerned with).  That, Donal d, is called a sell out.  I know, I know, all of this sounds like a cartoon, doesn't it?  Don't worry, you'll fit right in.  Mickey, good luck.  I don't know what to tell you.

I wanted to reply to the remark about the STHS yearbook. Unfortunately, I have to agree with you on the quality of the 2007-2008 yearbook. In my opinion, I think it all goes back to the leadership of the person that is running the staff. When you have a group of teenagers producing something as important as a yearbook, the adviser must run a tight ship. In other words, it all goes back to the leadership. From my understanding, the current STHS principal did not put  this Yearbook adviser into place. I hear around the rumor mill there is going to be a new adviser next year.

I just heard there is a hiring freeze within the Edgefield County School district. I don't know if it's just for certain positions or all jobs but the reason is that there is no money to fund the new hires. YA THINK ! ? !  Between Roberson's salary and Myrtis Brightharps extreme pay increase, no wonder there is no money to fund the much needed district employees!  GOOD GRIEF!

Following up on this mess at JET with the special ed student.

I earlier wrote and included fax and phone numbers to our Senator and Governor.  Well at 4:15 pm today, I received a call from Senator Graham’s office.  I was told that it is NOT a law protecting this child from being removed because he is a special ed child.  The school administration makes those decisions.   There is only one extra step they have to take.  If he is special ed, he is or can be considered for IEP (individualized education plan).  The school admin has to have a disciplinary review board (which I’m told all school districts have) and be evaluated in order to be removed.  The IEP is for this type of child, someone will go to his house with school lessons.

So, with that said, it’s back on the school administrators and board to DO SOMETHING.

If any other student made these comments and/or threats, they would be removed, I hope, or would they?

What the heck do school taxes have to do with what council spends? N-O-T-H-I-N-G!  Key word here, SCHOOL.  The county is being led by stupid people.  We are only stupid if we follow these leaders.  At council last night the accountability push began.  Come on county citizens, it's time the council put up or shut up.

I heard that Fox Creek fired a teacher for being late a lot this year, but I heard that Dr.Murph, the so called Principal, goes to the Coaches Clinics that the coaches go to. Why does a Principal who does no coaching have to go to Coaches Clinics, and from what I hear he leaves everyday for lunch with a coach. Are Principals and Coaches allowed to do this at other schools. I have a nephew who goes to Fox Creek and I am involved and first hand I know for a fact that things are bad there.

Again JET Middle School comes shining through this past Monday evening. The Choral Department under the direction of Ms. Candice Portee and the Band under the direction of Mr. Clark and Mr. Craig are to be commended for an excellent job.

The music was uplifting and enjoyable. The chorus was most enjoyable as it provided an array of music, dancing, and theatrical arts. The use of a “one eyed flying purple eater” and a shark created a great scene. We should all be proud of Ms. Portee and the work she has done in this area. Our students sang beautifully.

The band was dynamic. There sound was incredible, especially as the parts could be heard flowing together to create a beautiful blend of music. Mr. Craig and Mr. Clark have truly worked hard to mold these students into true musicians.

Mr. Scott was a great emcee and his work with our students is to be applauded. I am so glad to see principals who show a strong support of the ARTS in our schools. Many times this area gets excluded due to a lack of funds and support. But we are blessed that this is not the way in Edgefield County. We should all be thankful to have such a wonderful administrative staff at JET. I think we should all pray that the Board will not start moving them around. I truly believe that if is not broken, then don’t try to fix it.

Way to go JET. You are well on your way to greater and better things!!!!!!!!!

I just want to say that I completely agree with Bill White on the issue of the smoking ban. Business owners have a right to decide how they want their business ran. If we allow, and even encourage, such laws from our government, it will only be a matter of time before other rights are taken away. I have never been a smoker and think it is a nasty habit, but if I don't want to eat where smoking is allowed, that is my right, just as it is the business owners right to allow it in his/her establishment. Let them decide who they want as customers....

So now it seems according to the Gang of Five plus one that we should get down on our knees and be grateful that our taxes MIGHT indeed be reduced by 60%. (school portion) If that’s a reduction, it’s only by Edgefield County math.   Let us all remember the increases we’ve had.  For my family that “reduction” comes after an increase of 300%!!!

That’s still an increase of 240%.  It IS a mad, mad, mad, mad, mad world!     This Gang has to go!

Why did Mr. Dorn give us a sob story about the “rehabilitation” yes that’s the word he used, of his house? What a looser!!

Okay, I'm no fan of "The Developer". But I can't read anymore rumors and innuendo about the paving of Country Club Road without responding. As a resident of the "old" Pine Ridge (who is no fan of the "new" Pine Ridge), I can tell you that the "road work" signs had been sitting out there long before The Developer took over last June. I asked a friend at SCDOT about the signs last year since the widening of CCR was completed so long ago and the signs had remained. The road was going to be paved, I was told, and it cost too much money to pull up the signs and put them back down again later. As for the new administrator living out there, the road was going to be paved long before, and whether or not, he moved out there. Did it need paving? No. But I don't believe it had anything to do with the people that Wandering Minds writers have blamed. Okay, now you can take shots at me as well. Signed, Old Pine Ridge Resident.

This is in response to the person complaining about the Merriwether Elementary School Annual. I do the annual and have for many years. I make mistakes. I am not perfect. None of us are. However, being a
teacher, if I have to point out a mistake to a student I do so directly to the student, not under the cover on anonymity. I have more courage than that. I spend monumental hours, most of them on my own time,
working on the annual. I have no staff. I do so with no compensation other than my own pleasure and the pleasure the books give the children. So, if the complainer has any courage, he/she should come to me and
offer me 15 to 20 hours of proofreading for next year's annual.

I am a student at FCHS and i thought this was funny. Well first we all know nobody likes "Dr." Murph and today when I arrived at school all over the mobiles was spray painted, "Go home Murphy, F*** Murph. When will he leave, I mean if he didn't already know he is not liked this should show him. Then he fired a teacher and the janitor because we don't have enough money to have them in our school, what that about, now there are students in our classrooms because they have nowhere to go because their teacher was fired and the school is a mess; there is no toilet paper or paper towels in the rest rooms and all the trash can are overflowing. Also, we all know about the boy they let back into school after finding weed on him, well Saturday at prom a student was caught drinking and the student was pretty drunk. The student cussed out Dr. Murph, teachers, and a cop, but today the student was at school nothing happened to the student, the student was even bragging about it.  My question is, how they can fire Graytop and not Murph, at least Graytop cared about the students and not politics.

I agree completely about the smoking ban and I can bet you that many people read your post and they agree with it. Here is the problem Though they may agree they will never contact the people that can stop the law being passed. They don't take the time to find the information to do the work. When any of us post something like that please give the bill information and who needs to be contacted to voice our opinions. I bet many readers do not know that Edgefield Daily has provided State and Federal legislative contacts. Just scroll down the side bar to find it. We allow bills to be passed into law by not voicing our opinions to the people that represent us but then complain about it after it is done. It also doesn't hurt to contact them and say "Job well done" when we are pleased.

Why is the school board willing to pay for a tutor for an expelled student and I'm told that's the law, but a Special Ed. student, who's made inappropriate remarks that we all have seen can be a preclude to violence is not worth paying for these same services for, in order to separate him from the other students?
