Re: How far will the mainstream media be allowed to go?

Hey John L. Brown Jr., I have one easy solution to your problem, turn the channel. If you dislike what's on the present channel, then turn to another channel. If you are afraid that your children will believe the mainstream media, then don't allow them to watch the mainstream media. What's great about America is that you have the freedom to choose what you watch. I admire what you are doing with the petition to fire Mary Rice Crenshaw, but you may should have been more discriminating when you selected the ex-ROTC instructor at STHS to join forces with you. He resigned because he was unable to use the same strong arm tactics with chidren that the military uses with it soldiers. If you sanction enhanced interrogation techniques to retrieve information from enemies on the battlefield, then why don't we use enhanced interrogation techniques on the perpetrators at STHS to retrieve information on the alleged accusations put forth by the ex-ROTC instructor in his lawsuit against the school district. If my child was going through what the ex-ROTC instructor claims, then I would want the suspects to be subject to these techniques to reveal the truth. As many people have claimed "The truth will set you free".

Concerning these burglaries. Why have they not checked for finger prints in the homes. Surly these individuals are that smart.

Next Tuesday is the County Council meeting at 6:00 p.m.  Attend to see exactly what the final outcome will be of the "budget work sessions and readings".  Will the county employees receive a pay cut in the form of paying for their insurance, will there be a mileage increase to pay for governmental and non governmental functions, and will the proposed reassessment impact our taxes?  Think their decisions don't affect you?  Better think again, what they decide affects all of us.  Stick your head in the sand only to surface when the services you need are not there and/or the cost is so high you need to panhandle to pay for them.

Great big thanks to Mr. Ashcraft and Mrs. Blackwell for looking over the budget carefully, asking the hard questions and actually thinking for themselves.  It appears their suggestions are along the same lines that we citizens are thinking in dealing with our own personal budgets.  If it is not necessary, cut it out, reduce it, delay it whatever it takes to meet the needs not wants and balance the budget.  Here is a hint, needs are food, shelter, protection, education, healthcare.

What a lynch mob mentality.  Granted if you dont like Dr. Crenshaw and her staff, fine.  If you think that they are not doing their job, fine.  You want to do a petition, fine.  But get your information correct.  Some moronic people harp on the issue of "threat of rape" and "extortion" reported incident.  There is something call "due process".  If someone was going to accuse your child of something like that, you would want due process for your child.  If there is not supporting information to prove the case AND the victim comes forth with the allegation almost a month later, AND the accused denies, then you have NO case.  If a school system was to kick a (or your) child out of school on a such a weak case, the lawyers would swarm around like flies to take that case on.  An let's not forget the criminal side either.  You must be able to prosecute with valid evidence to take it to court.  Kick my child out of school or prosecute my child without due process, and I would have a good lawsuit.    OH apparently these same moronic people won't let readers know that similar case involving a senior is ongoing and that the school along with Law Enforcement is handling  the case.  Get to work on that tidbit of info, Mr Editor.  BTW I  like your wandering minds forum,   but I just wish people would get their information correct, before spewing it out here on this great forum.

I was home alone on Friday and my dogs began to bark.  I look around the corner and see a silver vehicle in my driveway.  I don't know anyone who drives such a vehicle.  I go back inside, locking all doors behind me.  I get a loaded gun and wait for someone to bust down my door.  They start knocking on the door.  Finally, they go back to the car, get in and back up.  At that point, I can see the signs on the side of the car that state they are from the Tax Assessor's Office.  You scared the sheet out of me with all the burglaries going on around here!  Just come and do whatever you need to do outside and don't be knocking on my door please.

I would like to send my condolences to the family and close friends of Zeb Blackledge.  Zeb was such a sweet person and he was always fun to be around.  I would also like to add that people in Edgefield need to find better things to do than start roomers that they aren't sure are the truth!!  Give this poor family time to grieve and heal before you start coming at them with accusations!!  It's sad that when something tragic like this happens everyone has to throw in their two sense on what they think happened!!  Stop running your mouths!!  The autopsy will tell the truth on what really happened!!  And again, to the family I am so sorry for your lose!! My thoughts and prayers are with you all!!

the break ins and buglaries in edgefield county will only get worse because of our incompete sheriff and sheriffs dept. the only way they will be caught is by citizens or another law enforcement agency. i had someone break in my house and found out who did it and where they lived. i contacted them on sat. but was told i couldnt talk with any one until tues. because is was labor day weekend and they were off
until tues. they only confronted them in lexington county jail where they were caught in the act. on another ocassion  there was break in at migrant camp in our area, i was out walking at the time and reported suspicous car in the area. it was reported to deputy ireland but was not checked out until 2 weeks later and only then when they got a call from mr. maye of the solictors office. the time for citizens to do something is now. start thinking about the sheriff election in 2010.

Editor's note: Obviously the county council preventing the hiring of more than 3 deputies to patrol the 507 square miles of our county has nothing to do with the recent rise in crime. Every county around us has increased manpower and patrols so the crooks go where? Oh, the only local county where only three people patrol an area the size of Richmond County.  I can't imagine why they would be coming here.

I also want to thank Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson for taking for taking action  against the corruption of Dr. Crenshaw and the school board.  I have signed the petition to remove Crenshaw.   It make me mad the teachers and others are worried about repercussions for standing up for their beliefs. They have rights too. I wonder what a TV program like 20/20 would think of the dictatorship of  Dr. Crenshaw and the school board.

My question is how will the petition work? Who do you send it to?  How many people are needed to make it a success.

These posts are pretty interesting in that when Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson brought to light the use of the "Voluntary Submission Form" to extort money from the teachers, that oh no, that wasn't meant to be intimidating, you are all wrong, we don't intimidate our teachers or staff.  Certainly appears there are some concerns of retaliation from the district. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?  Kemp and Jackson on target again.

Re:  Letter to Editor: Girl Scout Camp for sale

I'm with Mr. Roberts.  There should be a law - moral if not legal, that says if you do not use property in the manner for which it is donated that property should be returned to the donor or donor's heirs.  If Ms. Phelps wanted to give a monetary gift, she could simply have done that. It is more than sad that the Girl Scout leaders are choosing to discontinue what has been for many young girls and women a unique opportunity to commune with nature, to enjoy the great outdoors, learn skills that they would not normally be exposed to and have opportunities away from their normal routine.  In my youth, I was a Brownie and Girl Scout.  My children grew up as scouts.  To this day, I remember the experience I shared with others at camp.

Times are tough especially with the economy being what it is today.  I understand the desire of the girl scout leaders to get money wherever possible to fund the "programs" they desire to have for the scouts.   Scouting offers opportunities which are unique such as camping and skills learned with it.  It would truly be a shame if this asset were lost to the short sighted vision of this new Scout Council.  Rather than selling it they should be utilizing it to benefit these young people, after all that was the intent of Ms. Phelps.

If Edgefield  and Aiken Counties can have a partnership for industrial development why can't there be a partnership to preserve this camp.  Ok Mr. Roberts, you seem to have a good understanding of what needs to be done, get your action group going, let us know and there will be more to join you in the effort.

Thank You so much for keeping on top of these burglaries.  First thing I do in the morning is put on Fox and Friends and the second thing I do is pull up Edgefield Daily to find out who was burglarized the day before.  Its a great way to see where they are.  Its a circle Merriweather, Edgefield then Trenton.  When they start coming my way again I get more vigilant.  Who wants to wait  to see where they were a week ago.

Re: Petition to remove Dr. Crenshaw
I would like to ask the question that I am sure all teachers are asking... If we sign this petition, what will happen to our jobs?  I am so concerned.  Everyday I watch as the teachers and the students are being abused.  I am sure many are asking what I  mean by this statement.  Well, Please let me explain.  Everyday I watch our children misbehave, talk back, and never do one assignment.  The teachers give the children detention, or at times write them up, but nothing is done.  Some children are even allowed to walk out of class because they are angry, but still go to school functions with are suppose to be a privilege for the few students who do what is right.  We are teaching our children it is OK to talk back, not do assignments, and really just do as they please.  The abuse comes in when we as educators are failing to teach children strong work ethic and responsibility for their action.  As for teachers, the abuse comes in as we sit day by day not knowing where we will teach next year. We ask and no one seems to know.  We have to plan!!!  We are also expected to allow children to talk back, we are not supported in the everyday needs of the classroom teacher.
Please.... Edgefield County....
SAVE OUR TEACHERS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY OUR CHILDREN!!!!!!!!

Editor's note: I have been told by Mr. Jackson that the names of those who sign the petition will not be released until required. If retribution was taken by the administration on those who signed the petition it would land the ECBOE and District in additional lawsuits (one for reverse discrimination that has already been settled). I doubt they'd want to go there.

re: Court Attire.
I was in traffic court in Virginia one time. A young man came in front of judge wearing a tank top. The judge told him to leave and come back wearing proper attire.
Moments later, a young man was fined $100.00. His response was something like "sheet". The judge then said $200.00, and said "is there anything else you want to say"? I almost fell out my chair laughing. Thank goodness I was only there to testify. That judge didn't play around.

I try to stay off wandering minds, but I have one request and one comment.

My request:
Please sign the petition to get remove Crenshaw from her position. She is running us into the ground. She has no respect for the people that work their butts off everyday to make a difference in the lives of students. She walks around as if her stuff doesn't stink. I think she needs to be knocked down a peg or two. I miss Dr. Keesley.

Now for my comment:
Let's get this straight. It was not the evil white man that caught the innocent black man and sold him into slavery. It was the evil black man that sold the innocent black man into slavery. The white man was simply the "consumer" of a product.
Update: Slavery has been over for over for more than 150 years. I think it is time for everyone to get over it and go on. I think we need to work for what we have instead of utlizing the "I am owed" something attitude. I think some people need to learn to judge others by what they bring to the table not by what they look like.

I just want to thank Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson for taking on the task of exposing the corruption of Dr. Crenshaw and the school board.  People have let things slide for way too long.  I'm glad to see that the petition to remove Crenshaw is taking off

I would hope that all teachers and parents would sign the petition as well if they feel that things are not being handled correctly in the district.  Do you all remember when Crenshaw just left town with no one knowing where she was during the bad weather and buses had to run in ice?  And how about when she over-reacted when there was a threat of ice and she cancelled school the day before?  Those are just two bad deicisions she has made that I heard many teachers and parents talking about.  And those are the lesser of the evils.

Add in the extortion and threats of rape that were swept under the rug, the numerous discipline problems, the ethics investigation in regard to her grant writing company, the failure to provide the board with her schedule after repeated requests at the school board meetings.  All of these things and more should be more than enough to get people to see that she is running this school district into the ground.  Wake up people.  Take a stand.  Don't be afraid of some sort of retaliation from the District Office.  The only way to make things better is to get a change.  A change we can believe in! :)

There is a fear that if this effort fails these people, who might be teachers, staff or board members with ECSD, would feel some retribution for their actions. (Just as Adolph Hitler had over 80 of his generals executed who dared to disagree with him.) Can Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson give us some idea how our names will be used with this petition? I want to sign, but am concerned about the public scrutiny I will have to endure if my name comes out. Thank you again to Mr. Kemp and mr. Jackson for your efforts!

Looks like Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson were right on target again.  At the last school board meeting it appears Brother Bibbs told Sister Sallie to move over, he'd show her how to run a meeting and deal with Kemp and Jackson.  So did Brother Bibbs just validate the constant complaint put forth by Kemp and Jackson, that Sister Sallie is really incompetent?  What was very, very amusing was that Brother Bibbs was robbed of his self-proclaimed moment of glory, because Kemp and Jackson relinquished their time to another citizen who had a very important and critical issue that needed to be brought publicly before the Board.  Until Kemp and Jackson relinquished their time, they Board was not going to allow Mr. Jebens the opportunity to speak because the "time allocation was full".  What is so appalling about that is the Board and District didn't want the public to be informed of Mr. Jebens' issue.  The best writers in Hollywood couldn't script this any better!  The Board constantly provides the script for Kemp and Jackson to follow.  And to believe that Bibbs and Viola feigned deep concern over the Jebens issue further proves incompetence.  Well Brother Bibbs, you voted for "intestinal fortitude", now you have found yourself in a most precarious position-a Superintendent and Chairperson that doesn't inform the rest of the Board about sensitive issues such as these.  So one must ask, what else have they kept from the rest of the Board.  Appears you have a rogue Superintendent with a willing, or better yet, ignorant, accomplice.  Brother Bibbs should be given the boot as well because he is an enabler, merely for his own thirst for power and control.

Editor's post: Just some rambling thoughts to consider:

June is a great time of the year. Ordinarily it is considered the start of summer and is marked by graduations and summer vacations. However, reality and the perception of reality can be two different things. Nothing, or at least very few things in life, are what they really appear to be.

People too often will seek the sound bites for news as they run through their busy day. Everything that takes place cannot be captured in a 3 to 5 second sound bite.

There are simple things that might be reduced to a sound bite and be factual such as; do you support this or that - yes or no. That is simple enough. It might even be a viable news account of a situation. Granted, not all actions that are taking place are that simple and people need to pay attention.

Reaching out to everyone during a discussion on matters with very little public input is difficult because so few citizens actually attend meetings and become involved. Every politician will tell you that if no one is showing up to challenge them they must be doing a good job. Who can argue with that logic?

Is there anything that can change the status quo? Seemingly County Council newcomers Rodney Ashcraft and Genia Blackwell have been effective in bringing about changes although being in the minority by framing their arguments in clear and concise debates based on factual data.

Genia Blackwell and Chairman Monroe Kneece have already been responsible for formulating the county budget. Ordinarily the county council did not “work on the budget” they would just rubber-stamp whatever the administrator presented. Interestingly enough, that means that not one county council member ever worked on the county budget, a responsibility that rest squarely on their shoulders, for the past 20-years.

Now, I find that disturbing. Getting together to vote on a budget that not one member of the elected body had an active part in its drafting is scary. Terrifying actually.

Oh, I know that they will claim that they hired a qualified county administrator to figure it all out for them. Besides, did any of the voters that elected them actually think the people they were electing were even capable of the job?

Evidently so in the case of the election of Rodney Ashcraft and Genia Blackwell.

From the time they were elected they have made their presence known as well as their views of fiscal accountability. Indeed they have shown you do not need to be in the majority to make things happen. Representing your voters wishes based on factual data is hard to defend against. Everyone knows that. Don’t sit back and watch, come be a part of progress.

I read a post in Wandering Minds that indicated there was school in Edgefield County on Memorial Day. I do not have children in school and I was not aware that this had happened. I am really ashamed of the school district to show such little regard for our fallen heroes. Do the people making these decisions not know the history and meaning of this day?  If history serves me correctly, it actually started to commemorate the fallen ones from the Civil War. All of the men and women who have served this country and are serving this country deserve every amount of respect we can show them. I did notice that President Obama observed it and laid a wreath for fallen black Civil War heroes. That should speak to some people.  We need not forget what has been sacrificed and is being sacrificed in this country in order to have the freedoms we have (or at least had).  Ask any family that has lost someone or has a family member that was injured fighting for this country.  Wake up, school board. What is wrong with you???

Re:  Wandering minds poster that thinks Editor is biased;  As a matter of fact you did step on some toes, however, your second post was a whole lot less judgemental.  Thank you for that.  As someone who was born and raised in Edgefield, let me give you a little history about Bettis Rainsford.  Mr. Rainsford has used Edgefield county to benefit himself under the guse of benefitting Edgefield forever and ever....Amen.  He is the epitamy of a wolf in sheep's clothing.  If you don't believe me, ask anyone who lives in Mt. Vintage development.  They'll be glad to fill you in.  As far as Edgefield history goes, I'd find someone who does not embellish on the truth quite so much.  That said, as far as county employees go, I am not one but I am relative and friend to many.  In my opinion, they are the cogs in the wheel.  Weaken the cog, the wheel collapses, plain and simple.  If you don't think these people have vision, guts, capital and determination, your sense of reliable judgement needs refining.  Last but not least, if you don't think this county has some pretty shady upper eschelon, remember...10 governors came from here.  That in itself speaks volumes!

RE: "To the writer who claims to represent "the silent majority" in regards to Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson, I feel compelled to respond accordingly. First off, I would assume that from the spelling errors in your
letter, you're not a teacher...."

AMEN!

Yes that is correct, Kemp is graduate of the Citadel, and Jackson is a retired US Army Paratrooper, having served as a Counterintelligence Agent and a Technical Special Agent, both of which require very lengthy schools and rigorous selection criteria.  It is interesting that when a group of concerned citizens enlisted Kemp and Jackson to lead this charge, the number of concerned parents at the school board meetings was quite small, and at times non-existent.  It appears the numbers are being to grow-and of course that is surely something the school board or district do not want-their intent is to keep the public in the dark so they can pillage the coffers.

We thank God for people like Kemp and Jackson every day.  Our very forefathers had the same faith, and what some would consider reckless confidence, to stand up to those that abuse their positions at the expense of the people.  Just remember, when you ask people to do a job, lead, follow, or get out of the way.  From what we can see, those two may not be endearing to a lot of people by virtue of their tactics or strategy, but before we judge them, let's see what shakes out.  It does appear to be getting very interesting and the heat is on.

Gossip in a Beauty Shop cannot even come  close to the gossip and slander in this business.  If most  of his customers black and white and even the big logging truck owners that get gas there, if they knew some of the talk about them theyy would go somewhere else for gas. This business, and the majority of the time  there are only men in there.  It's a breeding place for gossip, lies, and deceit and each one of them know I,m telling the truth.  Especially the owner.

Tank top shirts with their baggy jeans below their crotch, halter tops with no bra, midriff spandex on a woman that, trust me, does not need to be wearing spandex, and the list goes on. I guess it is a good thing that I am not a judge. If I were, anyone that walked into court like that would be charged with contempt of court, taken to jail, and given an orange jumpsuit when they were brought back into the courtroom.

No wonder the thugs have no respect, no one demands they give it. Give me a gavel and a robe, I'd fix that in a day or two.

All these burglaries are getting out of hand. I blame (EdgefieldDaily.com) because you always tell the world that we only have two or three deputies patrolling. Why not put up a billboard on i-20 that says "Hey, we don't have anyone protecting us, come rob at will!"?

Maybe if (EdgefieldDaily.com) didn't report on all the break ins we wouldn't have so many. Have you ever thought about that!!!!

Editor's note: I suppose there is some truth to what you say, but as a media outlet we have the responsibility to warn residents of what is taking place in their community. I suppose we could mention one or two burglaries a week and call it a day and those who are in the other areas would just be left out not knowing homes in their neighborhoods are being targeted.

Though reports may give criminals a small amount of information, the depth of coverage of the ongoing crime spree to residents is empowering to them and has resulted in one near capture and a lot of information being obtained by investigators.

I think the good far outweighs the bad.

If this had read instead, Merriwether residents arrive home to find burglary in progress, and SHOOT SUSPECTS. I think things will be back to normal real quick.

What’s sad is the person protecting their property would go to jail.

Editor's note: If you arrive home to find a burglary in progress you should back away from the scene and call 911. You can give information and even trail the suspects but do not try to confront the robbers. If you are in the home at the time of the burglary you are allowed to defend yourself from grave bodily harm.

RE:I would like to know why wardlaw does not let the parents have a vote on who is on the board.

Why don't you ask Wardlaw directly?  I know from experience you will not be ignored, they will get you an answer and if the people you ask don't, go to someone else; they even have emails that they will answer.  Wardlaw is like a family, if you have a problem, let them know PERSONALLY, not through Wandering Minds.

As far as the people on the Board, I thank the Lord they are there.  I don't want to be.  I am sure that they would be delighted for you to be on the board or PPO, Booster Club, Development Committee or Marketing Committee (or anything else I may have left out).  All these folks commit their time and energy without pay for the betterment of our children and school that so many of us take for granted.

What, would you rather have a Board like ECSB?  Which Is Voted On!

It is very unfortunate that many of your wandering mind readers and responders actually believe that race is the driving force behind the blind actions of the school board and school superintendent. Nothing can be farther from the truth. The fact of the matter is our superintendent is a very insecure woman, who willing to hurt anyone regardless of skin color in order to surround herself with people who make her feel better about her short comings, which are many. She has surrounded herself with two white females at the district level, who instantly carryout her biddings (they are from our school community). More than anything, our children will suffer and are suffering as long as we argue that the boards actions are based merely on race. However, we can argue whether are not the decisions and recommendations are legal and ethical. We can prevail in this areana. I encourage community members, parents, teachers and etc. to begin a defense fund to protect our schools.

Re: To the Wandering Minds poster that thinks the Editor is biased:  Ouch! It looks as if I may have stepped on someone’s toes. By the way I appreciate the compliment – “You sound like a real knowledgeable fella.”

1)      Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. I have many weaknesses. I honestly believe one of my (few) strengths is to make reliable judgments of one’s character fairly quickly and correctly. Am I always correct? No. That’s why I stated I have much to learn about Edgefield politics and politicians.

2)      I am not the owner of the business, but I am related to the owner. However, I took an additional 8 hours per week cut for a total of 16. So I am working a 24 hour week versus a 32 hour week. Additionally small businesses like ours do not have the luxury of having many to “manage” the operation of the business so the owner and V. P. must be here during normal working hours most of the time. Nobody is getting rich here. Why would you want to send the employees home, or cut their hours back? If you can’t keep people busy you are not making money - it’s a sign of the weakening/ failing economy – not the owners’ desire for riches. By the way the company could not afford to give out typical yearly bonuses last year, so the owner took the money out of his own savings account to ensure everyone got one. I discreetly returned mine. Others may have as well. The owner is still paying some individuals out of his own pocket to do odd jobs in order to provide them with some extra income. The intention of my post was to relate that everyone is having a tough time due to the economy. Each person has to consider for themselves if they can be objective enough to consider the big picture and/ or are willing to share some of that burden themselves.

3)      Duh! Of course the workforce takes the hits more so than the owner. He/ she had the vision, guts, capital and determination to establish the business in the first place. I have never had a job where I believed that I had higher or even equal standing with the owner of the business. The “too many Chiefs and not enough Indians” syndrome is rare in a successful private venture. Government (U. S., state, county, etc…) run ventures are much more susceptible to the syndrome because they have all of our tax dollars to work with. If most governments were run more like some private companies (firmer budgets) we would have a few extra dollars in our pockets and a few less of the “Chiefs” and the “Indians” would be doing a lot better.

4)      I really don’t know all the details about county employees benefits packages (I got a feeling you could fill us in). I do not know what guarantees they were made if any. I agree with many others that county taxpayer funds should not be used to support privately held entities or other projects often mentioned in Wandering Minds. However, every single aspect of the budget should be examined for potential savings. That is owed to every single person that pays a cent of tax to Edgefield County – whether you like their opinion or not. Just because money is given away “here” does not justify it be given away “there”. Fill me in on how county employees are sharing in the budget cuts – Sincerely, I do not know.

5)      I was at the last council meeting and witnessed the budget discussions. It was extremely disappointing that my representative on the council and another decided not to forgo the mentioned trips. It was because of that and some other past issues with, and observations of, my council representative, that I mentioned I was looking forward to the next election. My agreement with the editor is based on my personal experience not anyone’s color. My opinion of Mr. Pettigrew is based on my personal experience up to this point. I have no experience with Mr. Rainsford and stated I do not. Hope I meet him someday because I have heard he knows a good bit about the history of the county of which I am very interested. At this time however, I still do not understand why he gets slammed so in this format. One day I may learn. Do you have personal experience? I just stated that I do not believe that he and some others are out to run the county in the ground.

6)      Don’t take it personally and I won’t take it personally!  You obviously are passionate about county employee benefits – that’s fine and understandable. But remember, those benefits are being paid with mine and others hard earned tax dollars and we have a right to question how they are spent whether it’s on benefits, libraries, Hilton Head trips, paper clips, etc...
Editor,
Apologize about the length just wanted some clarity. Thanks

Quit trying to make everything racial. I know Mr. Kemp never supported our public schools in the past but now since he has a family member on the payroll he is the expert. Both of you need to get a real job."

This is so precious.  I seriously doubt this post was asked by anyone to attend the school board meeting referenced.  First. Generally, people that are serious about government and cleaning up political hacks and corruption at least enlist those that are articulate and sensible enough to put forth a logical argument.  If this is in fact a teacher, we need to find out who this individual is and have Jackson and Kemp request the board terminate their contract.  As is obvious, they can not spell, can not use correct punctuation, and can not put forth a logical thought pattern.  This is truly a shining example of why Kemp and Jackson are trying to clean this mess up.  Why are we retaining this caliber of teacher, if in fact she is a teacher.  Actually, it sounds like Viola Jackson, but we'll never know, will we?  And there goes the racial thing Jackson referred to in his editorial.  Appears once again he was right on the mark.  Lacking any credible argument, the post uses the race card as Jackson put it "as a line of defense".  Now it could be Bibbs, Cooks, or Crenshaw making the post. I seriously doubt Crenshaw.  Although she does have considerable trouble pronouncing peoples names, she does have a PhD.  I'd probably lay some money on Cooks or Bibbs-stupid is as stupid does.  What's more interesting is the post thinks, or really assumes, they know Jackson and Kemp and state they "need" to get a real job.  Funny, both of them own and operate their own businesses, successfully.  And knowing both of them, the author of the referenced post would probably not be a prospective hire.

To the writer who claims to represent "the silent majority" in regards to Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson, I feel compelled to respond accordingly. First off, I would assume that from the spelling errors in your
letter, you're not a teacher.  Secondly, I'm not sure what the fact that Mr. Kemp has only recently come to the support of our teachers and children has anything to do with his passion for excellence in
terms of our school system.  Lastly, you obviously know very little about Mr. Jackson or Mr. Kemp, judging by your advice that both of these men "get a real job."  Both men are highly successful in their
personal and public lives.  Mr. Kemp is a graduate of The Citadel, an institution that demands only the best from her students.

I'm afraid that by the continuing play of the race card in regards to the welfare of our children, we are headed for a fight that will not be short or easy.  Regardless of the color of our school board members
or Superintendent, I say with all certainty that both Mr. Jackson and Mr. Kemp would be pressing for change.  Ashamed?  I too am ashamed, but not of Mr. Kemp or Mr. Jackson.  I'm ashamed at the lack of transparency from this Superintendent.  I'm ashamed by the lack of our school board's ability to convey ideas effectively between each other.  I'm ashamed by the lack of discipline in our schools and the way this Superintendent turns a blind eye to serious crimes committed by students.  Ashamed?

I'm ashamed of the things my children come home and tell me they've seen and heard in the halls of
our schools.  I'm ashamed of many things associated with this school board and the Superintendent, however, ashamed of Mr. Kemp, Mr. Jackson or any of the other parents who are beginning to take this board to task, I am not.  No sir, the time is now to inspire change and to rally around our children and teachers.  We simply cannot continue to sit by as under qualified school board members throw our children and teachers under the school bus for self gain.  We cannot continue to support school board members who fear answering questions posed by the public or school board members who fear seeing parents standing at the podium during a school board meeting.

I only hope that more parents will become involved in this fight to make our schools the very best they can be.  I hope to see more and more parents at the school board meetings.  I hope to see more parents speaking out against the subpar performance of this school board.

I would like to know why wardlaw does not let the parents have a vote on who is on the board. they ask us to nominate people but we do not get voting rights. it looks as though they pick who they want anyway. seems like one family member will come off and another will go on. this is not always the case but it is alot. most schools public and private elect their board by every one getting a vote.

To the Wandering Minds poster that thinks the Editor is biased:  You sound like a real knowledgeable fella.  If so, you ought to know speaking with someone a few times does not knowing them make.  Another old saying:  "You can listen to what a person says, but you'll learn more if you watch what they do."  I read about you being a small business owner and the cuts you've had to make.  Yet another old saying "Sh** rolls downhill".  Maybe if the owner and vp cut their hours like they cut employees hours, those extra hours could be divided between the employees and everyone would share equally in the cuts.  Or maybe if the owner took a cut in profits like his employees have had to take in their pay, that too would help everyone as a whole and not just the owner and vp.  But normally, that's not the way it works, is it?  Your workforce is always the first to take the hit.  I know of one company in this county that doesn't work that way and they've been around for a long time.  Kudos to them!  Also, everyone seems to be under the impression that the county pays the full premium for insurance for its employees.  The county pays the cost of insurance for the Employee Only.  The employees pay for their families themselves.  So don't make it sound like they are riding this totally free insurance train.  County employees are sharing in the budget cuts.  What about the two councilmen who refuse to forego their trip to Hilton Head for some partying?  What is your opinion on that?  Do the owner and vp of the business you refer to still make unnecessary trips at company expense?  One more thing I found interesting in your post.  You noted that you agreed with the editor about Mr. Dorn but not Mr. Pettigrew and Mr. Rainsford.  Who did you say was biased? (Sounds a little racy to me.)

The comments on the Augusta Chronicle site concerning the new Fox Creek school were quite interesting.  It was interesting to note that ALL the negative comments were made by the same two NEGATIVE people.  Wonder who associated with Fox Creek stepped on their sensitive little toes??  As far as the comment about the school population not being representative of the population of the county, could it be because a parent or the child themself has to provide transportation to the school?  There are some, I'm sure, that are unable to, but most probably are unwilling to take the time and interest in getting their child or themself there.  It's always easier and more convenient to use something provided by the government. Having only one high school in the county has always been ridiculous.  I'm sure the county could use at least one or more additional high schools in other areas of the county besides Merriwether.  No matter where, there are some kids who just don't want to learn and will do anything to be disruptive.  The education received by students who want to learn at Fox Creek is just as sufficient as those at STHS. Follow some of the graduates from FCHS who have gone on to college.

Sounds like a lot of jealousy and hurt pride in the comments in the Chronicle article and some of the ones I read in Wandering Minds concerning FCHS. But then that always happens when somebody's little toes are stepped on and they get their pride wounded.  GROW UP!

There was an interesting article in the (Augusta) Chronicle on Saturday about the new Fox Creek High School.  Many people have invested a lot of time and energy into making this dream come true; unfortunately, the leaders (board) have saddled themselves with a person who resembles an egomaniac with an inferiority complex.  It appears the most excitement Dr. Smurph has is about the new marquee.  According to Dr Smurph “Having a marquee that won’t take two hours to change won’t be a hassle,” he said.  “Now I can do it from my own home.”  This from a man who has a teacher who, in five years, has not yet become certified.  This from a man who spent money on trips for ‘important educational purposes” yet allowed classes to be conducted without enough textbooks.  It is a shame that he is excited a marquee when funding for Edgefield County students is being cut.  Seems he could find a better use for $60000.  Might be interesting to see if any relationships exist between the marquee seller and some of the people on staff at the school.

Editor,
Since I happened upon (EdgefieldDaily.com) a couple of years ago I have found it to be enjoyable, entertaining and informative for the most part. With little coverage of events and news in Edgefield County from other local media outlets, Edgefield Daily is the best way for us to keep up with what is going on in the county. I do have a criticism however.

I will readily admit I have much to learn about Edgefield County politics and its politicians, but it seems that there is a slightly negative slant towards some individuals, regardless of what they do. The recent column concerning Mr. Pettigrew comes to mind, along with the insinuation that he is a puppet of Mr. Rainsford I am guessing? of some sorts. I seriously doubt that Mr. Pettigrew, or Mr. Rainsford for that matter, have some diabolical ambition to ruin the county they live in and run it into the ground. I do not know Mr. Rainsford, but I have spoken with Mr. Pettigrew on a few occasions and he seems like a decent fellow to me and I suspect that he is only attempting to do what he feels is the right thing to do for the people of the county. And no, I am not saying either of these gentlemen are perfect, just as human as the rest of us maybe.

(By the way I must admit that I have not found many reasons to fault your criticisms of Mr. Dorn’s representative skills to date. I can only say at present I am looking forward to the next election.)

As far as the insurance issue – how old is the saying “… in life there are no guarantees”. Many never receive guarantees that their pay rate, hours, benefits (or jobs for that matter)  will always remain constant and continuing. Have County employees received one?  We run a small business and due to the current economic situation we have had to lay off several employees. The remainder of the employees, with the exception of the Owner and Vice President have been cut back to 32 hour per week or less. This in order to avoid more layoffs. Many Americans are facing similar situations. The point being that none of our employees signed up to be part time employees but times are tough. Everyone has to tighten their belts a little so we can all make it through the tough times. In addition, most employers these days have benefit plans in which the costs of medical/ dental insurance are shared by employer and employee – usually the larger share paid by the employer. When our insurance rates go up we must share a small percentage of that cost with our employees as well. Maybe it is time for the County Council to consider a change in the benefits policy. The current plan seems to be the exception, not the rule and I believe anyone with good sense, managing a budget must consider such options. It is only due diligence.
Thanks.

Editor's note: Thank you for your constructive comments. Let me start by saying that far too often anytime I mention a puppet master people always think of Bettis Rainsford. Here’s a hint, don’t.

I would also agree that County Administrator John Pettigrew is a nice guy. He’s personable, reasonably intelligent (having a law degree and passing the bar to become a used car salesman just doesn’t rank up there with highly intelligent with me), and he tries very hard in his current job. That does not offset the fact he is not qualified for the job (as USCOG determined by not naming him as a qualified applicant).

I do follow Edgefield County politics and have done so much closer than a majority of those elected for over a decade. The politically connected do not oppose me because I am wrong, they do so because I know things they don’t want anyone else to know and I make it public.

As far as the pay of county employees goes, there is a difference between reducing hours and cutting pay. And as long as the county council can find almost $80,000 to give away, they can provide for promised benefits. Needs first, wants second, give-aways last.

Tomorrow (Monday), the Aiken Standard has a story about to break about the sale of Girl Scout Camp Cofitichiqui in Trenton.  How were they able to scoop Edgefield Daily on this local issue?  We'll anxiously await the Editor's investigation of this sale and it's legality based on federal, state and local laws concerning the disposition of non- profit, protected lands.  The Standard hints that the sale "...may lead to a change of local traditions."  This sounds like a story is brewing.

Editor's note: I guess since the Aiken Standard does not follow Edgefield County government (as well as local towns), the county budget process, reports of a majority of the recent burglaries (their locations and the items stolen), recent counterfeiting, the upcoming General Sessions Court cases, current events, arrests, and two ongoing investigative reports (not yet published), as EdgefieldDaily.com does, a proposed land sale got overlooked. Since EdgefieldDaily.com scoops every local news agency (TV and local papers included) on events in Edgefield County on a daily basis, getting "scooped" once or twice a year by outlets with a much larger staff is not that bad of a record.

I do thank you for the tip and the sale will be examined and the information published.

I think the mo town 4 need to be removed from the School board by reason of insanity and talking out of both sides of their mouths.
They played the race card to get Dr Crenshaw hired and now they are playing the race card to cover her ineptitude.
What I think is the biggest problem  here is the "with in the race"  racialism. How can some one be too black or not black enough, I though it politically correct to say African- American. My mother had four children, she did not love the blue eyed children more than the green eye children.
I find it hard to believe other mothers think differently on other genetic traits.

It is greedy people with their own agendas looking for ways to get what they want at anyone expense who come up with this nonsense. As long as it is allowed it will keep the county in the dump.

Would Mr. Kneece just pretend to be on board with Ms. Blackwell and Mr. Ashcraft and then turn against the county employees in the 99th hour?  I find it hard to believe that he would compromise his integrity in such a way.  At the last council meeting he specifically said that he though the budget was very fair the way it was done.  He also said it was a good balanced budget that gave everybody a little bit but not what they wanted.  Therefore, Mr. Kneece, show that your words were not mendacious.  Be true to those words and stay the course you chose at the last meeting.

Reply: That was also the manner in which it was presented.  The "Teacher's Advisory Committee" allegedly came up with the idea, and was provided to the District as such.

I am a teacher here in this falling apart county. You are so right!  Though our committee person did not in any way present the idea so as to threaten us, the threat was in that it came from Crenshaw's office. There was that underlying idea that those who didn't sign may be the first to go.  Plus it is not being done fairly at all!  If that supplement is to be taken from one employee it should be taken from ALL.  Many who gave make the least, or are the only "bread winner" for the family, while many who refused are very "well to do" to begin with.  It is just not being handled fairly at ALL.  Yes, I agree!  Since
Crenshaw our district has been steadily falling apart! Mr. Kemp and Mr. Jackson are doing right.  I hope they keep after that superintendent and board.  We have one good board member, new, from Merriweather.  He is not even from my part of the county but I support him 100%!  I wish there were more ways to get all this information out there to the public.  As great as Edgefield Daily is, so many do not have access to computer internet and are left in the dark because the local papers do not print nearly enough information if any.

Teachers
Bus Drivers
coaches
lunch room staff
in school clerical
school nurse
custodian
resource officer
district office staff
principles
assistant principles
human resources
uppermgmt clerical
board members
and that district office in the town of Johnston that use to be a bank.  What do we need two district offices anyway?  Seems like the one in Johnston could go away.
And most importantly, Superintendent and all her assistants.

Listed by importance with Teachers on top and Superintendent at the bottom with her staff.

I would be willing to have taxes raised to get more deputies (if it can be accomplished for as little as you estimate).  I would not be willing to have taxes raised for more recreation, special interests etc.  Put our priorities in order.  Taking care of the citizens should be top priority.

Re: If a teacher is furloughed it doesn't mean not showing up for work. It means, no pay for that day of work.  I'm not saying its the right thing to do, but if it saves jobs, it is an "evil necessity". I do agree that everyone should have furlough days.

The law passed by the SC General Assembly in April requires ADMINs to take 2 furlough days for every 1 furlough day forced upon teachers. However, the payroll dept is the one that actually deducts the pay from the checks. Who knows if Clunkscales is following the law and will deduct furlough days from ADMIN checks. Furloughs cost teachers a lot of money. If a teacher makes $40,000 per year and is furloughed 3 days the teacher loses $631.58 in pay. Those earning $50,000 per year would lose $789.47 in pay. The recent Voluntary Submission of county supplements was not an idea developed by the Teacher Advisory committee. Teachers from each school were summoned to the district office and told that if they presented the idea to faculty at each school it would save jobs. They were told that the Board or Superintendent could not make the plea to teachers because it would be illegal to do such. I don't know what happened at the SCM of the ECSB on Wednesday evening, but we should find out the results of that headbangers ball pretty soon. There are many unanswered questions and if Mary Rice hoodwinked the district for $5,000 for an outside law firm, what could she do with an extra $250,000. All teachers who signed away half of their supplements should be awfully suspect.

You may or may not be aware but all employees who work over 190 days received adjustment in days for the 08-09 school year. This adjustment included all administrators, secretaries all the way down to the lowest paid 200 day employee.   My point is Edgefield has already tried just tightening the belts of everyone except teachers, bus driver and board members (not sure how days are figured for them).

No one wants larger classrooms.  No one wants anyone let go.  We have all got to band together.  We have had tight budgets before we will weather the storm but don't point fingers unless you have all the facts.

Does anyone know or have any background on Nathaniel Jackson that suddenly appeared at the last school board meeting and rambled on about nothing?  It appears just his appearance has put fear in some people.  Is he affiliated with the NAACP?  His message was kind of cryptic and disoriented.  And who at the Board coaxed him to show up? And why? Is this the same Nathaniel Jackson listed on this web-site: http://ethics.sc.gov/aboutus/reportsandpolicies/Debtors+List.htm.

That was also the manner in which it was presented.  The "Teacher's Advisory Committee" allegedly came up with the idea, and was provided to the District as such.  However, what smells is the fact that the "Voluntary Submission Form" was cast to teachers as being a "ballot", "...turn in your ballot", and "don't forget to pick up your ballot" making any reasonable person believe they were "voting" on what was sold to them as a nice thing to do, help other teachers.  However, a vote means it is in secret.  This was not a vote and was not in secret because teachers had to sign their names. (Somewhat similar to the Unions wanting to get rid of the Secret Ballot so they can identify non-conformists and take whatever retaliatory action necessary) A reasonable person could interpret that as being an intimidating factor, especially since contracts were up for renewal the following week.  Some could have feared that if they didn't sign to give up $1250, that they could be on the short list for layoff.  Moreover, it was also stated by a number of teachers that never, ever, have their classes been interrupted with a constant barrage of loudspeaker messages "encouraging" them to get their signed forms in by 10, or having someone interrupt their class to get the "signed" form in.  The good intentions of the teachers that suggested this idea was that, gracious.  But the way it was handled and implemented was just about criminal.  And let's not forget, Crenshaw is the de facto head of the "Teacher's Advisory Committee".  You don't think that could intimidate those teachers on that committee to see it her (Crenshaw's) way?  And now the alleged argument is that some of the teachers and even administrators were asked if they felt intimidated and they said no.  Well, if you saw who was asked, you could easily come to the conclusion that they had the moxie to stand up against it, and knowing them, it can be said that they truly aren't intimidated.  Maybe they weren't intimidated and stood up because they knew through clear and concise logic that it was illegal and had legal recourse. And what also smells is this, have the teachers who "donated" been told how long the donation will last?  And what happens if there is another budget shortfall next year?  Are they going to have to donate another year?  Meanwhile, Bibbs, Cooks and the rest of the Board can spend money like drunkin' sailors, and the District can continue to retain employees that never existed before.  What money did any of them "donate"?  And if you notice, some of the Board isn't rocking the boat much because their spouses are employed by the District.  In all actuality, outside of one new Board member, it's time to get rid of them all and start over!  This is not a race issue-it's a politician issue.  Corrupt, incorrigible, linguini spine'd, and out of control politicians need to go, at all levels.

Congratulations County Council.  Now that is how a meeting should be conducted.  Actual discussion of issues and explanation of your decisions.  Balanced budget, no tax increase, employees getting insurance coverage without a pay cut (if they had to pay for it - it cuts their pay).  The road maintenance fee is going up from $10 to $20 per vehicle.  That is better than having property  taxes increased.

If you haven't attended the council meetings you  missed the opportunity to see the sacrifices some county council members, department heads and others have made by tightening their belts even further  and foregoing travel for the good of the County. Too bad everyone didn't feel the need to pitch in.  It is encouraging to see we have some fresh brain power on the Council who are thinking and not just rubber stamping or increasing taxes.

Now if we can just get that idea across to the school board members and superintendent, we might have the product (well educated, respected and productive members of society - students) that should be their top priority.  Along with power goes responsibility for actions.  Key to quality education:  good teachers, students who respect others and want to learn, parents and the community supporting these efforts and government (administration and board members) willing to sacrifice for the good of all.

I applaud Mrs. Blackwell for her hard work and success on the budget planning. It appears we have a very smart, capable woman on our council and we are thankful for her. I am still concerned about any money going to things like Thompkins Library but at least it is not as much. I am sorry that it gets so much and the public libraries only get 500 dollars. That just seems so odd to me when the public libraries really serve everyone. Children need good libraries to have resources available for them to learn and I wonder what is really available to them. The other big, big concern are all these robberies. It is just mind boggling that there are one or two every day. What in the world is going on and where are our tax dollars going for protection against these things? Goodness!!!!!

Editor's note: The library system is funded by the county at a tune of around $175,000. The money for Johnston and Trenton is direct funding. Due to the severe cut in the Local Government Fund (LGF) from the state, around $254,000, the budget was slashed to make ends meet this year, including no new deputies. The county council could raise taxes around 4 mills and provide for three or four new deputies. The cost to property owners would be around a $16 increase in taxes on a home valued at $100,000.

Not a bad deal if you ask me, and I hate higher taxes.

I read the message the person sent in about the schools in Ga.  furloughing everyone else but the teachers and the bus drivers.  This makes perfectly good sense.  Those folks in the district office and surrounding offices can't possibly be as needed every day as they would like to believe.  Why not let them lose a few days instead of the teachers.   Let them choose to give up some of there salary for the education of the children.  That is our main goal here  isn't it.
web posted May 21, 2009

If a teacher is furloughed it doesn't mean not showing up for work. It means, no pay for that day of work.  I'm not saying its the right thing to do, but if it saves jobs, it is an "evil necessity". I do agree that everyone should have furlough days. The more days on your contract, the more furlough days should be incurred. Teachers have a 190 day contract and will receive 3 furlough days. If you work a 240 day contract (district office staff), you should receive at least 5 if not 6 furlough days. I also agree that ALL board members should forfeit their pay until this budget crisis ends.  As far as the loss of half the local supplement, there is no law stating local boards are required to give one. Edgefield is lucky it is as high as it is. Also, the board cannot legally rescind or decrease the local supplement. That has to be and was brought about as a suggestion from the teacher liaison committee. At least that's what I was told. If I'm wrong please correct me. I am just a concerned tax payer but I do like knowing the facts.

Richmond County School Board Struggles to Balance Budget

Renita Crawford reporting
The proposed budget includes furloughing everyone for four days except teachers and bus drivers. That would save almost 250 thousand dollars a day.

Dr. Bedden:  “I would be four days furlough which means I lose four days worth of pay also. As the highest paid official I would have the biggest and that’s fair. I need to share the burden with everybody.”

What?  the superintendent giving up pay!!! along with office administrative.  That's absurd, our schools can't run without TWO offices with clerical people but can without teachers??????  HELLO School Board, do ya'll have anything to do with these budget cuts?  Or is Mary in charge?

If you really what to make a change run for school board and take it back, and understand what you are voting for. Apperently Mr. Hoffmann was asleep."

The teachers that actually "voluntarily" donated the money to save other teachers jobs should be applauded, and I am most certain that if a benefit was ran in the County with the objective to raise money and save teacher's jobs,it would also have been successful.  There are a lot of caring, giving, and Christian people in our neighbors who would have risen to the occasion.  However, you must also ask the 59% who didn't want to give or couldn't afford to give because they feared if they didn't, they would be on the short list for termination.  With utmost certainty, all of the 59% did not give willingly.  And you also must ask, how many of the School Board members voluntarily contributed? Hell, they don't even want to take a cut in their own pay and are having trouble voting on that.  And how many School District personnel voluntarily donated?  Do you think Crenshaw gave at the office?  Doubtful.  Funny and amusing at how your post is somewhat convoluted.  Hoffman does know what he's voting for, or in this case, not voting for.  How can you vote on a "balanced budget" when a portion of that balanced budget relies on whether or not the funds from the "voluntarily" signed form are even legal.  If the form is deemed illegal, some of those funds could go away, ergo, the balanced budget is no longer balanced.  And lastly, if the school district and board were prudent in their spending practices, they would not have to ask for more money from the public or the workforce.  When Bibbs, Jackson, and the rest of the gang upgrade their authorized rooms from $139 to $249 luxury suites, that's not prudent budget management.  And when Crenshaw spends in excess of $5000 to seek legal counsel from a law firm in Columbia when she has paid for legal counsel right here, that's also not prudent budget management.  That's only the tip of the iceberg. If we really started digging, I am most certain you'd find a pile of money that has been wasted, all of which could have been used to save the teacher's jobs.  And by the way, Hoffman is the only Board member that has refused his pay in an effort to LEAD BY EXAMPLE!  We do not want to see any teacher lose their job-  As a matter of fact if we got rid of Crenshaw and used the Assistant Superintendent, got rid of the Human Resources, got rid of a few other district personnel and a couple of school board members, that would save almost $500K, plenty to save teachers.

Mr. Editor, skip is not the only problem EMS and Fire personnel face with the radio systems in Edgefield County. In much of the county they are lucky to be able to use walkie talkies outside of a house, so you can forget using them inside a house to talk on the repeater. This causes a huge problem in that the first responders are unable to pass on critical patient information to EMS without stopping what they are doing, going outside to the high powered mobile radio in the truck to communicate. You might get lucky and be able to transmit to the tower from inside a house, but I bet you would look like one of those contortionists adjusting a pair of rabbit ear antennas.  Also, at times I'm lucky to receive the Fire and EMS channel from inside my house (well within the area served). Another problem is the extremely long squelch "tail" on the North and South repeaters. If this were shortened there wouldn't be any "talk over" problems when one party is on the North Tower, and the other is on the South Tower. I've been out in Grovetown, Ga and get better radio reception than I do in the County the radio system is supposed to serve. I think Edgefield needs to start looking at a different radio system... Look at Aiken, County.... not without there own problems from time to time, but definitely not the low level equipment that is going to get someone hurt, killed, or delay help to those in need. As a final note, I can use the Aiken County repeater nearly anywhere in Aiken or Edgefield County clearly, even from inside my house.

Re: Democrats Work To Kill Early Voting

Seems as though you were doing a little cherry picking on the story above. Kind of reminded me of Dick "My first name really fits" Cheney. The SC Senate Democrats were trying to kill the bill because it would require anyone voting to show a picture ID at the polling place. You and I might not think that was a big deal, but there a lot of poor, elderly persons in SC (of all ethnicities) that do not drive, have a valid driver's license, or own a car. Many elderly persons get a ride to the polling place on Election Day with someone else. Many elderly persons would have to forego eating a couple of meals or not take some medication if they had to pay for the expense of a SC DL. I'm not against showing a picture ID but it would exclude many elderly voters in this state. I know you will always try to make a Dem look bad at any cost, and some times you really don't have to try that hard, but excluding those who have the right to vote is not good for a thriving REPUBLIC.

Editor's note: The State of South Carolina provides for a state "ID". I know Democrats don't want Obama to prove he is an American to be president, but hey, let's at least make sure the people voting are. The very people you claim can't provide identification can sure find it to get welfare, EBT cards, and other government programs. What's the big deal?

However, things have been changing rapidly and that change is spreading.  As one who gets to editorialize the actions of the county council members, having two fiscal conservatives who are not afraid to justify their views against the majority presents a very interesting scenario. Basically we have Councilmembers Ashcraft and Blackwell making a major impact on some tough issues already, and this places Chairman Kneece in a very difficult political situation. To oppose the changes he has to crawl into bed with Norman Dorn and Willie Bright. It may just be me, but I don't think Chairman Kneece is going to enjoy hitching his wagon to Norman Dorn very long to get his way. It just makes writing columns about it way too easy.

On my 60th birthday, I received a gift certificate from my wife. The certificate paid for a visit to a medicine man  living on a nearby Indian reservation who was rumored to have a wonderful cure for erectile dysfunction. After being persuaded, I drove to the reservation, handed my certificate to the medicine man and wondered what would happen next. The old man slowly and methodically produced a potion, handed it to me, and with a grip on my shoulder, warned, "This is powerful medicine and it must be respected.  You take only one teaspoonful and then say '1-2-3.' When you do that, you will become more manly than you have ever been in your life, and you can perform as long as you
want."
I was encouraged. As I walked away, I turned and asked, "How do I stop the action of the medicine?"
"Your partner must say '1-2-3-4,'" he  responded. "But when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon." I was very eager to see if it worked so I went home, showered, shaved, combed my hair, put on lots of cologne, took a spoonful of the medicine, and then invited my wife to
join me in the bedroom. When she came in, I took off my clothes and said, "1-2-3!"
Immediately, the glory of my manhood filled the room. My wife was so excited that she began ripping off her clothes. And then she asked, "By the way, Honey, what was the 1-2-3 for?"

My neighbor is one of the many people getting robbed around here and it is very upsetting that these people just seem to be able to rob at will and nobody sees anything. We were at work when she was robbed and I think that's what they are counting on is robbing people when they are at work. I hope they catch them SOON. It's scary and very unsettling not knowing when you leave for work if your stuff is going to be there when you get home.

Editor's note: I have full confidence that those responsible will be caught. Alarm systems have prevented some attempted burglaries so that is an option. Having a large dog inside your home is also a very strong deterrent to would be thieves. Remember, you and your neighbors are the first line of defense against crime by being vigilant and observant. That should empower you not reduce you to fear. Sheriff's Deputies would rather answer 1,000 calls of suspicious persons and vehicles that turn out to be nothing to get that one call when they catch the burglars in the act.

That says a lot about you and your professional standards. I know I wouldn't take some of the things said about you if they were said about me so flippantly. You have brought more things to the public consciousness in the last few years that would never be known if it weren't for Edgefield Daily. Keep your chin up and keep on doing what you're doing. By the mere fact the author of the above post was articulate and concise, and also capable of really seeing what many have seen for a long time, makes them a candidate.  BUT! What really makes this individual a candidate is the use of the word "ALL" in the latter part of the statement.  Amen.  God does not separate His children by race, color, or creed, only the current School Board and District does that as is patently clear to any fair and impartial on-looker.

What is going on in the school district is the unraveling of many, many years of hard work and accomplishment.  And for those that sacrificed the blood, sweat, and tears to get here, they will have done so in vein if we do not change the manner in which this Board and District operates.

If the author wants a job and wants to step up to the plate, we can make that happen, as there are plans to move back to the right direction.  The editor knows the identity of both posts and I have no qualms in the editor releasing my contact information to the aforementioned poster.

I don't recall having our best teachers "begging" other districts for jobs just so they can get the heck out of Edgefield when those supers were in charge! I further do not recall anyone being "reworked" whatever that means and if you said no one complained then what's the problem anyway?!? I do, however, remember the district being in ALOT better shape and our children were taken care of, because - guess what - THOSE superintendents CARED about the well being of our children and their education NOT personal gain!! We lost a great leader when Keesley retired. Hiring Crenshaw was the worst decision Edgefield has made in a long time - other than of course, keeping Dorn, Bibbs, and Cook on the Board - and I'm not saying that because they're black but because they're ignorant and self absorbed!

I guess when James Bibbs, Edgefield County School Board, wanted someone with "intestinal fortitude" instead of qualifications, he was being very honest and open about the type of individual he is and his own character.  In seeking for someone with "intestinal fortitude" he was actually looking for a ham fisted thug that would not have any compunction about shaking down his/her own workforce, employees, neighbors, or fellow citizens, while keeping and protecting their own treasures.  Not one district employee was approached through a "ballot" or "Voluntary Submission Form" to relinquish any of their salary to save an employee, oh yeah, that's because the wonderfully brilliant Superintendent (note the sardonic sarcasm) is not cutting any staff positions, just the teachers-the people that really count.

And using the "Voluntary Submission Form" and attempting to disguise it as a "ballot", making teachers believe they were voting for something, when in fact they were intimidated into to signing the form, is disgraceful.  But if you are like Bibbs and the rest of that gang, it isn't disgraceful-they have no conscience about what they are doing to others as long as they protect themselves.

But that's okay.  They may be capable of pulling off their chicanery here on earth, but they will be judged by a much greater authority, one of which they publicly say they believe in, but if they did, would they act in the manner in which they do?

**Interesting Note: The name given to the "ballot" for teachers to sign, "Voluntary Submission Form" may not have been an accident, but more so a Freudian slip - as defined:  sub·mis·sion n    1. a willingness to yield or surrender to somebody, or the act of doing so.

We are already doing with out text books.  In many classes there are not enough books for each student to have their own copy.  We now have 'classroom sets' and they must stay in the classroom.  Classroom sets were established shortly before Bibb's and Cook's travel gluttony came to light.

County Council philosophy, as usual, regarding replacement of Church Street building - wait long enough and everyone will forget
1.  there was not enough insurance to cover the building so we have a 4,000 sq. ft. building instead of 10,000?
2.  wait long enough that the deadline to get the "rest of the money" requires a "quick decision" therefore the citizens do not have time to discuss or object.
3.  wait long enough that the citizens will not notice that the Railroad Street property is down hill from the "square".  Wonder if that will create a problem like water from uphill draining onto the property which will require additional site prep?

Stay tuned folks, your county council at work again.  New council members better speed up that learning curve, the incumbents will not share information you need to make good decisions you are going to have to fight for it.  Good luck.

Editor's note: The building lost contained around 4,000 sf of space, not 10,000.

Can someone, somebody, anybody or everybody tell me what the Sheriff’s Department is doing to stop all this? I DON’T want to hear if the County Council would do this or do that. I can make excuses all day long at work but my work has to be done. Edgefield County’s Sheriff Department has “Investigators” don’t they? Are they Investigating? I don’t hear or see anything from the Sheriff’s office on any of the following events. We have had 2 burglaries on my street and I haven’t seen a Sheriff’s Deputy ride through the neighborhood yet. Wonder if this was happening around the Sheriff’s house, would something get done? Would he see cars patrolling in his neighborhood? If this happened next door to a County Council “person” house would they get a deputy to patrol the area?

Editor's note: I know that one such incident took place very close to one county council member's home prior to additional patrols being added. Not all patrols are being done by marked vehicles. The Sheriff's Office is operating on a very limited budget and an even more limited amount of available manpower.

Sheriff Dobey has requested additional deputies for the past eight years and has been approved for a fraction of those requested. How three deputies are expected to cover 507 square miles of territory is beyond comprehension.

But, on a brighter note, county recreation is being funded by hundreds of thousands of your tax dollars. Keeping the kids off the streets is supposed to deter crime. According to recent stats, I have to ask; how well has that worked out? As recreation dollars increase, so does crime. Humm... maybe, just maybe, those dollars are misappropriated.

My comments are only on the EC School Board. First, the last time I glanced at my Voter Registration, it did not specify a poiltical party on it. In SC we vote on political parties, but we don't necessarily have to belong to a political party. Second, I agree that MoTown Fo have really screwed up the EC school district, but it was always and will always be a medicore school district at best, because those who practice excellent leadership skills (Admin level jobs) are not going to come to Edgefield county to work. Third, it befuddles me why someone would want to lump all democrats together. I can attest for sure that most Aryan Nation followers and KKK members call themselves Christians/Republicans, but I don't lump them with all other Chrsitians/Republicans because I am a rational thinking person; unlike yourself. Maybe I should lump you in with the Aryan Nation/KKK sect; because you sound like one of those irrational thinking persons that believes in that sort of rhetoric.

RE: As a teacher, he should be more willing to produce shows that promote strong morals in order to allow our students to see the positive side of life.

The "portrayal of a 13 year old pregnant girl" scene mentioned in the above post was not, in my opinion, a portrayal of a 13 year old. The character was played by a senior, so I am assuming she was 17 or 18. The character she was portraying was that of a pregnant woman. In the scene, she was with the father of the child, who certainly did not appear to be a teenager. I didn't notice if they were wearing "wedding bands". They were playing a part in a theater production, and I saw absolutely nothing wrong with this particular skit. Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, but high school students play those parts regularly. As the parent of a teenager, given the option, I would greatly prefer a pregnant teen to a suicidal one.

I think the young men and women who devoted their time and talent to Caught in the Act should be commended for a job very well done. They obviously see the positive side of life better than most, as they are certainly able to poke fun at it.

For the record, I do not have children who participated in Caught in the Act, nor do I have any ties to Mr. Mckinney. I attended the Saturday night production with my 10 year old, and we both laughed till it hurt. I was so impressed with the production that I purchased the DVD on the way out so that the members of my family that were unable to attend would be able to enjoy it as well.

Re:  This link shows the downfall of the Republican Party
Now, I figured there would be some response to this posting.  Let's first start off by establishing loose definitions of ideological views within the political spectrum:
Progressive            - The "left-wingers," who advocate for social justice, environmental issues, consumer protection, gun control, human rights, amnesty, right to choice, drug policy reform etc...
Liberal                     - Supporters of "social democracy," who believe that as citizens, we should have the power to choose our own destiny by participating in the governing and lawmaking process through direct action, or "grassroots lobbying.”  Human rights/equality, education and environmental control, as well as consumer protection are hot-button issues.  Also, health care for all and social security reform.
Moderates             - Perhaps the most complex members of the political process.  Those who join this group have mixed views on fiscal and social issues.  They are often referred to as “moderate” or “independent.”  Having worked for a political action committee (PAC), I will tell you these voters can make or break your campaign.  Issues that divide moderates are amnesty, 2nd amendment, taxes, etc.
Libertarian             - “Social liberals" but “fiscal conservatives".  Great example of the Libertarian Party (which is an emerging party, in my opinion) is California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Not that I think that he is an outstanding official, but  for an example, he has a tremendous state deficit and is looking at the possibility of legalizing marijuana as a potential source of tax revenue.  This shows his socially "liberal" side, paired with his fiscal "conservative" side.
Conservative          -   Basic belief in free market economy, traditionalism, and fundamental religious views in Christianity.  Pro-life stance, and avocation for strong military and very limited government interference.
Neo-Conservative -   Support of imperialism and abstinence-only sexual education.  Deeply seeded views on Christianity, and its presence in the American Culture.  Staunch believe in 2nd amendment rights, and animosity towards entitlement programs.  Strong “social conservatives.”
So, having provided these loose definitions, I would say that Sean Hannity is a “Conservative.”  Especially considering, if you Google his name, the subtext reads:
“Official site of syndicated conservative talk show host, and co-host of Fox News Channel's Hannity and Colmes. Audio, show highlights, and contact ...”
I don’t know many people who publicize themselves as “conservative,” and not “Republican.”
And National Republicans aren’t arguing.  They believe that a more “moderate” approach can effectively help the Party to restructure and reform.  This aspect is shown in this link.  Notice, Sarah Palin is not part of this process, nor is Rush Limbaugh.  Moderate Republicans like Eric Cantor, Bobby Jindall and Mitt Romney provide vision for the Republican Party.  In fact, they are the best bet.

Over the course of 30 years as a teacher, I have seen many things change in education, some good and some bad.  I must say the current crisis in Edgefield Co. schools is unlike anything I have seen in my career.  Blaming others will not solve the problems.  But we must all work together, give a little, give a lot, to solve the money issues.  I also would like to thank those who have written in to thank teachers for their work.  Most of the time, we have a thankless job.  And the little thanks we get usually comes from  those students who are such a joy to teach.  We do not hear from the parents of students who are accusing us of not doing our job, and that is why their child is failing almost all subjects year after year.  Nor do we hear from parents who did not parent their children in discipline, and expect us to raise their children, while we have to tolerate students who disturb our classes, create havoc for those all of us trying to teach/learn. Some days I think we should receive combat pay, like the military!!!  I have a student this year who thanks me at the end of each class session.  I cannot tell you what joy and satisfaction it is to know a student appreciates what I do.  Most teachers in Edgefield Co. do truly care and want to do the best for their students

Editor's post: A post that was listed on Friday suggested that County Council members Blackwell and Ashcraft publish minutes of executive session meetings. I thought I had commented on this, but checking back I didn't - so let me do so now. Matters discussed in executive session cannot be disclosed, period. The only time an executive session can be held in public is if the outside party (be that an employee being discussed or a third party at the root of the meeting) requests it be held in public. Which would make it a public meeting and not an executive session.

As far as votes, matters before the county council, and other matters, I think EdgefieldDaily.com does a pretty good job of covering the issues. However, they are free to write in anytime they desire. Have a good weekend.

I am a student at STHS, and frankly, I don't appreciate the remarks made about the Caught In The Act. My name is (removed), and I was part of the play. I was in both scenes that were discriminated against, and if you had paid attention to what was being said you would have heard that the girl was actually portrayed as being in her early 20s. And as for the Roof top scene, this scene was part of CITA two years ago, so if it was alright two years ago why isn't it alright now? I don't understand how those two scenes were offensive to people, when in another scene there was a boy stripping.  As for the soccer situation I can understand why some people would be mad, so I will not touch that subject.  The gong show however is different, I know for a fact that Mr. McKinney kept his composure during that situation. It was a parent that "flipped his lid". It was understood that the stage was not to be used that day, this did not mean that the stage was off limits forever.  The cafeteria floor was more than enough space to be used by the group.

If Edgefield Daily is not able to do this, maybe one of the local newspapers could. The results could prove quite interesting!! Thanks!!

I work at a company where performance is paramount and excellence is demanded. I expect the same from Edgefield County school administrators. The editor provided factual data of Dr. Crenshaw’s abysmal performance record upon her hiring. Competence and excellence should be color blind. However, I see no indication this hire was ever made on the basis of excellence. Consequently, this school district is heading down a path of mediocrity. Hope does still lie in the hard work ethic of our teachers.  I applaud their loyal service in the face of poor leadership.

To the Editor,
How can we as citizens of Edgefield County can have a special election and redo our school board.
I was blind to the fact to vote for people that promise to do the job and w(o)nt do it.

And if there is not a such thing when is next election because I am tired of reading from the teachers and parents about our school system going down. When I was in school it was never like this and it is sad to see the children and the staff face with these problems.

To the Teachers if no one tells you as often as they should Thank You for having the patience with my children. I am out trying to make a living for my children an you being there to teach them I say THANK YOU. And I do apologize for the stuff you are being put threw.

Editor's note: School Board members are up for election every two years on staggered elections (4 year terms).

Let us now see just how good our two new County Council members are at representing the taxpayers of their respective areas of the county.

Would Ms. Blackwell and Mr. Ashcraft each please prepare a separate written communication either through Edgefielddaily or addressed to each taxpayer a written report outlining all discussions and decisions held by or with the Council members since January, 2009.

Let the taxpayers you represent know what’s “going on” and the basis for your ideas/decisions/votes.

In addition, the solution to knowing what goes on behind closed doors is a requirement that any discussion or meeting involving Edgefield County matters have a written record.  The notes must be exact and not customized to protect the guilty.  These transcripts could be published for all taxpayers to read.

To the poster that said, "Cut two teachers at W.E. With the budget issues of the school district every cost, every expense needs to be look at with an eye to the question, “Can this cost be cut” Here is what I see.  According to the South Carolina School boards Association, our school board receives in pay the following, $3600 year; all $100 meeting

What this means is that if they want an extra $100.00 in income all they have to do is have an extra “special” meeting.  And if you check the records there is at lease one extra meeting a month.  In other words, the school board is costing us almost 2 teachers.

Our school board is draining money out of the school system more than any other school district in South Carolina    Ask them why they are willing to take money they do not deserve, even if it means putting teachers out of work.

Many school boards serve with out any pay at all.  Those other school boards really care.  Our school board is in it for the money.

The school board is only interested in putting money in their pockets; they have not care what so ever of the kids or of the people they are elected to serve.

I ask you check out the info at http://www.scsba.org/acrobat/forthemedia/boardmemberpay.pdf

If the teachers who have received the letters requesting they forgo some of their pay to a save a teachers job are mad about the letter, this should really piss you off.  Apparently in mid-April some Title 1 money was received by the District.  It was suggested that money be used to save teachers' jobs, and that there was enough to avoid laying off or discharging any teachers.  A great idea right?  Well, not according to Dr. Crenshaw.  Crenshaw apparently stated that she had other uses for the money.  What uses we don't know, but once again it shows that her allegiance is to her pet projects and not to the work force, the community, or the children.

But you know what?  Maybe those of you - parents, teachers, etc., are deserving of this Superintendent.  You whine an moan about losing your job, losing jobs, increases in classroom sizes, and the reduction in the quality of education, but very few of you ever attend any of the Board Meetings, or even the open meetings recently held by the School Board and District.  Your complacency, or even laziness, to take a stand is aggravating to say the least.  As long as someone else is fighting your fight you do nothing to help-but you sure as hell whine a lot.  Look at the posts on this site -  day after day, whine, whine, whine-if the number of people whining brought themselves and one friend to the School Board meetings, maybe, just maybe, someone would get a clue, that people in the county are angry and hungry for change.

If you don't vote, don't take a stand, don't get involved-you deserve everything CRENSHAW is doing to this community!

PITTSBURGH – The government will begin taking land from seven property owners so that the Flight 93 memorial can be built in time for the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, the National Park Service said.

In a statement obtained by The Associated Press, the park service said it had teamed up with a group representing the victims' families to work with landowners since before 2005 to acquire the land.
"But with few exceptions, these negotiations have been unsuccessful," said the statement.

Landowners dispute that negotiations have taken place and say they are disappointed at the turn of events.

The seven property owners own about 500 acres still needed for what will ultimately be a $58 million, 2,200-acre permanent memorial and national park at the crash site near Shanksville, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"We always prefer to get that land from a willing seller. And sometimes you can just not come to an agreement on certain things," park service spokesman Phil Sheridan said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090507/ap_on_re_us/us_flight93_memorial

OH MY GOD......  Lasting effects of a terrorist attack are still effecting people.  I will not ever visit that place or condone anyone I know going there.  THAT IS PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is National Teacher Appreciation Week, and I wanted to take the time to publically acknowledge a teacher who not only inspired me to become a better person, but a teacher who inspired me to become a teacher as well. Mrs. Caroline Hembel  Brazil began her teaching career in the mid 1970’s at Wardlaw Academy. She was amazing and full of confidence and enthusiasm. I can still picture her as she wore her long black cape and danced down the hallway sipping her iced tea. She would often invite us into her home in Saluda to provide us with meals beyond our wildest dreams. Her generosity and true concern made me “hang on” to every work she said. History was alive in the halls of her family’s hallowed estate.
My dream came  true this year as she now teaches my own daughter at STHS. My daughter finds her as incredible as I did and loves her class. I enjoy hearing my daughter’s retelling of how exciting each lecture is and how Mrs. Brazil uses her own materials such as photographs to bring history to life. It reminds me of the same zeal that she had as a teacher many years ago. I have laughed and said the only difference is that the iced tea has changed to hot tea!
I’m not sure if Mrs. Brazil has ever been awarded Teacher of the Year or won any awards. But I can speak for myself in that my life was greatly influenced by this remarkable woman. She has received her awards as she has made a positive influence in the lives of people. And that is worth far more than any piece of paper, medal, or award.
I have  always heard that those who can TEACH!!! And I know that Mrs. Brazil makes this statement come true each day.
Perhaps there is a teacher that you need to thank for making a difference in your life. Please do it before it is too late. With all the budget cuts and threats of job losses, we all need some extra encouragement to make each day a little brighter. Thanks Mrs. Brazil for giving me hope and encouragement during the critical years of my life.

The cuts in the budget of the School System are hurting everyone, the kids mostly.  Moral is at it’s lowest that I have seen in my entire life here.  What we need as teachers is leadership, leadership that is more than meetings and speeches.  Leadership that really feels the pain the we expect to suffer.

With that thought I suggest the following cuts be requested by the school board.  Cut two teachers at W.E. Parker.  One who is the wife of a school board member, the other who is the daughter of a school board member.  At Johnston Learning center, cut the wife of a school board member, At the District office cut the husband of a school board member.  At Johnston Elem and JET cut the job of a school board member.

Teachers of E.County-think before you sign to donate part of your stipend to save teacher's jobs.  Where did this idea come from?  It DID NOT come from teachers as "someone" is leading you to believe.  It was presented to teachers on an advisory board.  Then the teachers took the idea back to their schools.  Sneaky, huh? Also smart-"someone" knew if it were handed down to teachers, then the teachers would work from their kind hearts to save their own. (Although we can't be sure who the teacher's money goes to save can we?  Teachers have no voice in who is saved-the decision is made by "someone" else.) Beware teachers-if you sign away your income this year, what will stop "someone" from coming back for more next year?  Our financial situation is going to take YEARS to correct, so "someone" thinks it would be better for the teachers to solve their problem than the people who get paid to do it.  I have to ask- how much of their own income is the school board sacrificing?  What about Dr. Crenshaw? What about other people at the top whose positions aren't necessary? If the teachers sign away their income to "help the team", then who else will do such a noble thing?  I can guarantee, the people at the top won't because they have passed it down to the people who are paying the price for all of the budget cuts-the teachers!

What is with all the secretive movement regarding the rebuilding of the "Neighborhood Center" building that was lost on July 5, 2007.  Does anyone know how much money they are spending to build the building in a new location?  Does anyone know what offices will be located in the new building?  What happens to other agencies that were in the old building that burned?  Where will Veterans Affairs, Cornerstone, GLEAMNS, Social Security, and Vocation Rehabilitation re-locate to?  These afforementioned offices lost space and all their possessions when the fire destroyed the building.

Has anyone on County Council or in County Administration consulted with any of these organizations that provide much needed services to the citizens of Edgefield County.  From reports published on EdgefieldDaily.com, I undertand that they are constructing a building that will have 4,000 sq. ft.  This is to replace a 10,000 sq. ft. building that was lost.

What the County Council has done is to make a politically expedient decision in order to make up for them dragging their feet on replacing the building.  The decision to build is rendered just days from the time line of when "they" would lose all rights to an insurance reimbursement from the state on the lost building.  It is at best extremely poor planning.  It has NO input from the general public or the professional people that worked in the neighborhood center.

I truely hope you can find some answers to these questions.  I do believe they are important and when the bill finally lands on the county for the "turn key" building project, look and see what the final cost will be to the taxpayers of Edgefield County.

Editor's note: No discussion concerning the building or its location has been made available to the public.

Even though I live out of town, I read the Edgefield newspapers, and I was greatly disturbed by a recent picture of the Peach Blossom Queens.  While I have no problem with beauty pageants where older girls can choose to be participants, I do question the lessons being taught to little girls, babies even, who are dolled up in make-up and sequins and paraded about on stage (literally paraded b/c some can't even walk, yet).  Are we teaching them that they must conform to the ideals of beauty put forth by Hollywood?  Are we teaching them that their beautiful little baby skin is not perfect and must be covered with make-up?  Come on, pageant organizers, there is no need to have babies on stage.  Older girls, fine--they are old enough to choose to be in a pageant, but little ones should be left out of pageants until they not their Mamas can choose to enter.

Dear Editor,
In response to your article regarding office space, how many empty building offices does the county council need to see in and around the Edgefield town area.  Seems to me we need to revisit these possibilities before the need  of wasting our tax money on another building period.
Thanks for your time

Editor's note: I have many similar comments and placed this one as it was the most concise.

The office space is needed. Due to security issues mandated by the SC Supreme Court, and replacing the office space of other agencies that were displaced by the fire, moving normal day-to-day government offices out of the court house is a great idea. Where putting it at the Railroad Street property came from is interesting.

Is it true that the teachers all received a letter telling them that if they gave up half of their local supplement then 16 jobs could be saved and asking them to commit by secret ballot?  How unfair is that to put the burden of deciding if a fellow teacher gets to keep her job or not on a teacher?  If this is true, what a cowardly way for the administration to handle the budget cuts!

Here's what I want to know... How much (a dollar amount) has the superintendent and the human resources officer put in the pot?

$1250 is a raindrop in an ocean; however, losing 3 days of pay (furloughed days) plus $1250 a year is major to our teachers. The local supplement is a small token of appreciation that the tax payers can give to the well-deserving teachers who work hard every day to educate our young people and IT SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AWAY from them.

It's unfortunate that the writing on the approval for a new building was displayed as a "gotcha" piece instead of recognizing that Chairman Kneece and the council are actually trying to proceed with what is best for the county and the spending of the insurance funds received.
My question is:  Did anyone from Edgefielddaily.com speak with Mr. Kneece regarding his comments to confirm or counter the accusations?

Editor's note: Yes, during the meeting and after the meeting. That's why there are quotes in the article. There were no "accusations" made. There was a review of past meetings (factual and on record) as to "decisions" that are made by the county council and they are on the record statements.

I am a teacher for the Edgefield County School District and was shocked to receive a letter asking  me to give up one-half of my local supplement. What upset me was the fact that the letter clearly stated that this act MAY save some jobs. The word MAY scares me as I fear that the school board or superintendent could decide to use the money in another manner, such as training or who knows what else. I am wondering if it is legal for them to even ask someone to do this.

Why are we in this mess? The School Board clearly promised that Dr. Crenshaw could make good things happen. What is good about losing teachers: larger class sizes, furloughs, and other events. I see little good in any of these events. And we are all aware that Dr. Crenshaw and her staff will not lose one cent in salaries, but we will.

I love this district and have been here for the majority of my career. I have always been obedient and willing to help. But this request is going too far. And furthermore, the letter contains a major grammatical error. At least write correctly if you are going to write at all.

Some people just cannot except the fact that we are a Christian Nation. From Webster's Dictionary.
Gen'tile, n. 1. non-Jew -adj. 2. non-Jewish.
The King James Version Bible - Ephesians 3:6 -  That the Gentiles " should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
From the Gentile nations God created " in Christ" a new people for himself. The Jew's pressured Rome into crucifying Christ.
I guess if we are not a Christian Nation , then it would be fair to say that if a Jewish man dressed like a woman to escape the Nazi's. He could be considered the first official " Drag Queen".

Jews believe there is a God in heaven. Jesus practiced Judaism, or he was a Hebrew, so I think this makes the US a Jewish nation. All you Christians worship a Jew, so you have to agree. If Jesus was to come back, then he would probably look for the closest synagogue to go and join a minyan to read some Old Testament haftorahs.

I really feel comfortable with Obama now that he is going to take care of those mean companies who are sending jobs overseas to get cheaper labor and less taxes and costs.  He is going to close those tax loopholes, add fines to the already costly experience of having a business in the US and run them out of the country.  That will learn them, now they will have to either sell their business overseas or simply move overseas, taking their businesses and jobs with them.  That should stimulate the economy.  The government can just hire more people to handle the additional welfare, unemployment and other entitlement programs.  Now aren't you glad you voted for this President, the messiah who is going to give you everything you need and then some.  Soon everyone will be on entitlements.  One problem, who is going to pay for them? Maybe we can sell more of American to the Chinese (stimulus loan).

His first 100 days, wow look how much he accomplished.  Looks to me like he is pushing as much through as he can before anyone realizes what bad decisions he and his friends are making and what the long term effects will be.  Anyone wonder why Supreme Court Justice Souter is "retiring" at such a young age?  Could it be the administration wanted to ensure a much longer term liberal would be on the bench?  Look for more changes to come.  We better hit our knees folks, pray hard and hang on tight. The only foresight that they did not see in the future, is the fact that non-believers and communist would try to make God into an idol by distorting the truth in Christian values. Jesus came to us in the physical form of God in Heaven. Our Constitution is written to protect us and give us our individual rights. I am still in shock that this county is funding pet projects over people and their families. I cannot grasp that thought. Would the 17,500 dollars that they are giving to things like the Thompkins Library cover the cost of the insurance for these employees? Is there more cost involved in the insurance cost?  How can anyone in their right mind support giving this money away when people are in need of it and have been promised it.  To me it is just the common thread in Edgefield of a select few people who don't care about anyone, just themselves and their projects. Promises by certain people in Edgefield don't matter. "Promise them anything, give them nothing" seems to be a repetitive action in this county. I hope there is some way that Mrs. Blackwell's budget proposal can be reconsidered.  It probably won't be because that would be the smart thing to do.

He has kissed the butts of just about every dictator in power, bowed to an Arab king, Israel is the only roadblock to Mideast peace and should not defend herself by taking out Iranian nuclear weapons facilities, the U.K. doesn't believe in torture, and not really one of our strong allies, we consume too much of the worlds resources, Russia is good, and  former USSR Eastern countries are not good. He also believes American auto manufacturers need government guidance on what kind of product they should be producing, can`t pick their own CEOs, and like other industries, pay too much money to the wrong people and not enough to the common ( union) workers, and  soldiers, gun owners, and people that believe the constitution means something,  and people that disagree with him are bad, while tax cheats and militant liberals, and all of government are good.

Never in the history of the world has a leader been so negative on his own country. Even  leaders such as Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, and other murderous dictators loved their country. They would never sit on their butts while pipsqueak dictators, like Chavez, put their countries and citizens down. Now I see change! I can`t believe it! One scene that upset me was a portrayal of a 13 yr. old pregnant girl combined with an image of a girl removing her clothes behind a screen.  I find the scene tasteless and inappropriate for a group of school-aged children to participate in. Mr. McKinney should have expressed better judgement in his decision to allow this scene to be on stage.  As a teacher, he should be more willing to produce shows that promote strong morals in order to allow our students to see the positive side of life.

I see that there is no way to convince someone that believes government is the be all and do all and ignores that we are individuals responsible for our own situations, be that being poor, middle class, or upper class. "Millions of Americans enjoying their small windfall from President Barack Obama's "Making Work Pay" tax credit are in for an unpleasant surprise next spring. The government is going to want some of that money back." Obama giveth Obama taketh away.

I'm glad we will be getting a new baseball coach, his coaching methods leaves something to be desired.

Editor's note: The story was not about getting a new coach, but losing a coach that took the team to the playoffs for the first time in 6 years and had a player sign a full scholarship.

re: How do you know that no board member attended Mr. Gratop's services?  Were you at both and did you stay the whole time?  How do you know if they didn't contact the family personally?

I was there for both services the whole time. I don't care that they did not show up as I had already said that if the Chairwoman, her husband or the principal had the gall to show up they would probably hear a lot of ranting from a lot of people!  They did not like John & had no right to be there anyway! And although I did not write that first post I do agree with the writer about being proud of the FC kids although they said that some of them will be in trouble for not being at school. Also the Girls Softball Coach would not allow the girls to leave practice early Tuesday evening to attend the visitation for Mr. Gratop. That is very sad since they had asked & were originally told they could. I also heard that the teachers were told they could not take time off to attend the funeral. For some odd reason they could not get subs for it.
John did a wonderful job as the founding principal for Fox Creek & many of us are firm believers that what the board there put him through was the cause of his heart problems & then his health just continued to get worse after that! He was a great man and truly cared for our kids and what happened to them! I think it is a terrible shame that more did not show up for his services. I know people traveled from OH & TN to be there. I know people that took off work & school to be there & even postponed exams! Those kids know what a gift they had in Mr. Gratop and I know he was smiling down about them being there. He would also tell them all to keep up the great work! Even some adults showed that probably did not really get along with him, but at least they showed their respect. He was loved by many & will be greatly missed!

I was watching the news the other day about the Edgefield County employees paying part of their insurance....that's how it is at most companies...How dare they complain about having to pay some of it!!!!!!!

Editor's note: The insurance is considered a part of the pay package offered at the time employees are hired. It is basically a cut in pay, and a pretty big one at that, and no one is getting rich (labor force) working for the county. If you are making $18 to $20,000 a year and they cut you $1,200 that's a cut of over 5%.

When you're  from the country you look at things a little  differently.........

A Montana rancher got in his pickup and drove to a neighboring ranch and knocked  at the door. A young boy, about 9, opened the door.”Is your Dad home?” the rancher asked.

“No sir, he  isn’t,” the boy replied. “He went into town.”
”Well,” said  the rancher, “Is your Mother here?“
“No, sir, she’s  not here either. She went into town with Dad.”
“How about your  brother, Howard? Is he here?”
“No sir, He went  with Mom and Dad.”

The rancher  stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other and  mumbling to himself.

“Is there  anything I can do for you?” the boy asked politely. “I know where all the  tools are, if you want to borrow one. Or maybe I could take a message for  Dad.”

“Well,” said the  rancher uncomfortably, “I really wanted to talk to your Dad. It's about  your brother Howard getting my daughter, Suzie,  pregnant.”

The boy  considered for a moment. “You would have to talk to Pa about that”, he  finally conceded. “If it helps you any, I know that Pa charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the hog, but I really don't know how much he gets for  Howard.”

The Rev. G.L. Brightharp was found guilty and fined $1000 on 4/30/09.  The judge found that Rev. Brightharp did not follow his court order nor the previous judges court order.  Both court orders stated that Rev. Brightharp would be re-instated as pastor of Mt. Canaan; the two trustees and the two deacons that were silenced would be re-instated to their positions; and there would be four joint board meetings held at the church on specified Sunday dates.  The only order that was followed was Rev. Brightharp being re-instated as pastor again at Mt. Canaan. Instead, a special call conference was held and the motion of exclusion was made and voted upon.  The Rev. Brightharp had nothing to do with this motion of exclusion.  He removed himself from the chair and asked another preacher from Mt. Canaan to chair the meeting for the motion.  He stated that he had no idea that such a motion would be made, even though the deacon who made the motion had to read it from a written  sheet of paper and the other motion maker had a recent DUI.  It's a good thing the two judges or was it three judges if the Magistrates Court hearing counted, could see through the Rev. Brightharp.  Those preachers that supported the Rev. Brightharp and attended those conferences should do a little soul searching and then look hard at themselves.  Talk about a My Buddy bunch of spineless preachers.  Some of those preachers  laughed, joked and made smart remarks to the members at the conference.

The four members that were excluded are now re-instated, gaining back their membership, positions, and their duties. There will be joint board meetings on specified  dates per the Judges orders.  God has proven he is the head of his house, and he alone.  Follow God Mt. Canaan, the road is straight, narrow, and of few.

RE: Do you know the Preamble for your state?

I did not see any which explicitly said "Christian nation". They all mention God, or some Higher Power, but none said "Christian".

I saw an ad in the Citizens News where someone is selling the Old Kendall Mill.  Well, maybe if some of the teachers getting the ax, ban together and buy it to make it a charter school,  then they will get the funds upfront and can't be touched either(like Fox Creek). These teachers  that are loosing there job spent a lot of time and money going to college waiting for  the opportunity to educate kids.

Editor's note: If another Charter School is founded in Edgefield County it would take so much money away from the School District that the state would most likley have to take over control of the local school system.

My O My I saw Edgefield County was a topic on last night’s (April 29th) TV news.  The subject was the Edgefield County Budget and the health insurance premiums for County workers.  Edgefield County should pass a law limiting the person(s) representing Edgefield on any media outlet.  Mr. Kneece’s comments reminded me of the TV comments made by one of the Mount Vintage Directors – something left to be desired!

Kuddos to the person who posted all the preambles of the states. Why is it so hard to see the truth of our past? This country became what it was because of its foundations. Too bad we have gotten away from it. I think we are seeing the results of that and it isn't getting any prettier.

"President Barack Obama said in Turkey: "We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

Do you know the Preamble for your state?

Alabama 1901, Preamble : We the people of the State of Alabama, invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God, do ordain and establish the following Constitution..

Alaska 1956, Preamble : We, the people of Alaska, grateful to God and to those who founded our nation and pioneered this great land..."

This post proves Obama's point!   God is a generic term for a higher being....God is believed in by Christians, Jews and Muslims.

Thanks for making Obama's point more clear to folks.

How do you know that no board member attended Mr. Gratop's services?  Were you at both and did you stay the whole time?  How do you know if they didn't contact the family personally?   You don't know anything.  You're a coward who hides behind the wandering minds.  Why don't you stop being the problem and if you think the board is so terrible, run yourself.  You can put in your application at Fox Creek High School.  They are accepting applications now and then you will see how much they really do.  Don't group the board as a whole, you have no idea why a board member may not have attended the services.  Well, here are some reasons. They work a full-time job.   They have families they would like to spend time with.  They had a prior engagement.  They were sick.  They had a family emergency.  They didn't know Mr. Gratop.  The list goes on and on. So, until you walk in their shoes don't judge them. Edgefield should be proud of Fox Creek Students, they are a great group of kids.
