There are no longer any females in administrative positions. As a parent, this concerns me especially given the ages of middle school students.

RE (second submission) In regards to the earlier post concerning new hires at JET. My daughter is at JET. What am I suppose to be worried about?

Can anyone tell me how someone that doesn't live in Edgefield County anymore can send their daughter to JET, and why would they?  Or did they just move out of the town or Edgefield and not the County and just trying to sound like he/she got the hell out of dodge.  And now you want your "fellow anonymous cowards" to tell you what to be worried about!  HYPOCRITE
web posted June 30, 2010

kind of found it funny that the person, who felt compelled to write and join the rest of us anonymous posters, had moved the heck out of Edgefield yet has a daughter at JET? Did I read the second post correctly?  That means they must have moved back to Edgefield County and posted on wandering minds more than once??  Anyway, the beauty of being able to post in wandering minds is that people have a bit of a voice in an environment where that has not been true in the past. This area has been run by the good old boys for way too long and people have had no way to share their frustrations without being intimidated. Duh!!! My goodness-look at this mess with the Calliham process. What a fiasco!

As far as the point of not bashing people who have risked things by starting businesses, running for office etc.-what do you suppose the motivation is for some of those folks? Could it be that they have something to gain from all those activities? Just because someone is out there in the forefront does not mean they are out there to help the folks. I don't think you have to look too far into the activities of some of these "leaders" in Edgefield to find out that there is a bit of a power play there.

I suppose we should appreciate all the folks in DC who were willing to put their lives on the line and run for office. They have certainly done a good job of taking care of the folks haven't they?  I wonder what their motivations are.

Doctors vs. Gun Owners
Doctors
(A)  The number of physicians in the  U.S.  is 700,000.
(B)  Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are  120,000.
(C)  Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of  U.S.  Dept. of Health  and  Human Services.
Now think about this:

Guns
(A)  The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million)
(B)  The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
(C)  The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.

Statistics courtesy of FBI
So,  statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
FACT:  NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT Almost everyone has at least one doctor.

This means you are over 900 times more likely to be killed by a doctor as a gun owner!!!

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.

We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, I withheld the statistics on lawyers

for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention!

Editor's post: Let me see if I understand the situation we are in. County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece claims the entire Edgefield County Council has “agreed” to not only appoint Building and Planning Director (head building inspector) Mike Reed to be the “acting” general contractor, but he will do so while he acts as head building inspector and serves in the Tax Assessor’s Office.

Three members of the county council say no such decision has been reached much less allowing bids to be taken on plans that have not even been approved.

According to information provided, Aiken County will be inspecting the work that Reed oversees in the Calliham project.

Reed is currently suing Aiken County and has twice tried to leave Edgefield County and return to Aiken County since 2007 (last time Jan of 2009).

Oh, this is going to work out just great.

RE:  A copy of the electrical "specifications" offered in the commercial bidding process by Mr. Reed without editing:

Having written a few specifications for contact bidding for the Federal Government, I think it would have been wise to include one simple statement.

All construction/renovations must meet or exceed any and all current building codes.

Those would include:  Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Communication, etc.  Not to overlook ADA standards.

The taxpayers are going to suffer from this ignorance.

Editor's note: It took Mike Reed three times to bid out a simple paint job at the County Courthouse to get it right, yet he is put in charge of bidding out over a half million dollars in work? I see no problems in our future. The blind leading the blind.

Yes it is true.  The director of human resources, Shawn Clinkscales and Sandra Friar both got 15% raises.  The powers that be (the all powerful school board) are trying to disguise Clinkscales under the Master's Degree she recently earned.  No Master's Degree will earn you a 15% raise in education.  Sandra Friar's raise was probably deserved considering she practically runs the show.  I just wonder how much of that 15% raise for each lady could have been used to save employees from being furloughed again... Just my "wandering mind!!"

Editor's note: I have not been able to confirm the raises at this time.

Reference post about a player not allowed to participate in Dixie Youth Baseball all star games.  The rule is below and the state director does have the authority to make exceptions to the rules.

This young man was asked by the team to play because they were having problems getting enough players to show up for the games. He did not ask to play, they asked him to play, so I feel that is reason enough for an exception to the rule.

League coaches made the selections for the team, not the player or his parents. As the last line in the rule says there may be other reasons for granting and exception....

IV. Player/Coach Eligibility Requirements  (Page 88)  (A)--Only players who have played in a minimum of nine (9) of their local league games shall be eligible for tournament competition, with the exception that the state director shall be empowered to rule a player eligible, for good reason, even though
the player has not played in the nine (9) games.  Dixie Youth Baseball urges state directors to grant this exception only for good and substantial reasons, such as injury or sickness by the player
substantiated by a physician's notarized statement, weather conditions causing postponement of games, and instances in which leagues were late in starting their seasons and therefore unable to complete a majority of their games prior to the start of tournament play.  There may be other reasons for granting an exception, and the state director shall exercise discretion.

Dear Old Edgefield where I was born early one frosty morn! I stumbled onto Edgefield Daily a little over a year ago and have found it to be a great source of news from my hometown. I have also found Wandering Minds to be the most hilarious example of why I got the you know what out of Edgefield many years ago! I would like to say thank you to all of the fine folks from back home that start my day off with such a belly laugh! I have debated in my mind for some time if I should join with the anonymous cowards who post daily attacks on their Edgefield neighbors. After giving it much thought I have come to the conclusion that since having been born and raised in Edgefield County it is my God given right to do so. My question to my fellow anonymous cowards is why do you choose to bash a person who has taken a business risk and created jobs in Edgefield County, chosen to run for and serve in a public office, or applied for and been hired for a  job in the community? Please tell me fellow anonymous cowards have you ever done any of these things with your life? If not maybe you should shut up and do so!  I will tell all of you that I now feel ten feet tall since I have joined the ranks of the anonymous cowards!

Politicians have no shame and will say anything when it serves their purpose. If the wind changes........Note: The last sentence below.

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest-serving member of Congress in American history, died Monday at the age of 92. Byrd was the president pro tempore of the Senate and third in line to the presidency.

In all, Byrd's congressional career spanned 12 presidencies, numerous wars, countless political movements, and nearly the full arc of the civil rights movement. Once a staunch segregationist and a member of the Ku Klux Klan, Byrd endorsed Barack Obama for president in 2008 and praised his fellow Democrat as a "good Christian."

Well, of course he is. Just like there are 57 states in the union.

One day a florist went to a barber for a hair cut.  After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were dozens of Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

2 questions for anyone with answers: 1) Did one of the recent JET hires come from Clarendon, 2) Is it true that the HR director and SF both get a 15% raise ? Given that teachers will be furloughed a minimum of 3 days during the 2010-2011 school year, this has to be a mistake. As for the JET hire, that comes as no great surprise. I'm glad I don't have a daughter at JET. Questions to ponder for anyone who cares.

Concerning the posting on requirements for playing Dixie Youth All-Stars posted June 26,2010, the rules clearly did not allow this child to play All-Stars. He was one game short of meeting the requirements.
This posting has attacked this child and his parents in a vicious manner. I want no part of this.
This child is a very good athlete .His performance on the field obviously is a result of a lot of hard work on his part.
The rules were upheld so please stop the personal attacks.

Editor's note: The child has nothing to do with any of the conversations and posters would do well to leave him out of the conversation. He's a kid playing ball. Fuss about the adults all you want.
web posted June 28, 2010

Of the three comments posted at least one of them knows that this is a league governed by rules. I have a copy of the rules and have read them. They are free on line at the Dixie Youth Baseball site.

Those who tried to manipulate around the rules were the problem here.Their attempted rules violations were the problem. And it is being perpetuated by ignorance. So a parent brought the rule violations to the state director, why? Because the so-called local authorities responsible were not interested in the rules and would not respond to parents concerns. Perhaps the annonomous writers should go to the dixie Youth Baseball Directors comments with particular attention to his Bliblical reference.

This was not sour grapes about who did not make the All Star Team, but about violations of the rules by parents of some of those that did and bad decisions by the local authorities who are supposed to know better. Those who were disconcerted included parents and other fans of players selected for the team. There are at least two deserving boys now on the team who would not have been if the rules violations had not been protested and corrected. I wish the boys the best. Wonder if they will ever get out a schedule? (Name removed)

Editor's note: Rules are there for a reason. Imagine how mad the parents of all the other children would be if the team won it all and the losing team was then able to claim to title by showing a rule violation.

I know from your comments in the EdgefieldDaily.com that you audio tape the meetings.

Thank you for all you do.

Editor's note: Thank you for reading. There have been discussions on video taping the meetings for the record and all meetings are recorded in digital audio, sometimes presented in reports. Bringing a live streaming video online is too costly at this time. However, it is something we are looking at in the future.

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this.

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault , so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Editor's note: This is not from Bill Gates. It's original author is unknown.

I agree with the person who posted the comments about the Edgefield Dixie Youth Baseball president not standing up for the child who was not allowed to play on this years major league all star team.  These are 11 and 12 year old young boys.  What kind of example are these adults setting for them? These parents should be ashamed that they took away a young child's chance to play all stars. This child was also an asset to the team and to take him off only hurt the team. Shouldn't the Dixie Youth Baseball president want the best possible team to represent Edgefield?  What was the purpose in doing this? What did these parents accomplish?  I am not sure why these parents felt that this was so important that they would take something like this from a child. Was this the Christian way to handle it?

Let's see.....The new managment has multiple "layoffs" and spends massive amounts of money on legal fees....Makes sense to me!

Are there any, and if so, who will be the lucky ones to get them? Teachers obviously can't or aren't allowed to speak about what goes on, and the public isn't stepping up for our kids these days.  The usual outnumbering by the board is ridicuous.  Who's out to help the kids here?
web posted June 26, 2010

This is in response to the post concerning the child who did not meet the requirements for playing on the All Star Team.
First of all, if you knew what the rules state for all star eligibility, you would feel the same way that the parents that voiced their concerns to the State Director did. I know for a fact that the child that was removed from the all star team did not start the season or put in the time at practices that all the other kids did that started with the league from day 1. I also know that he was playing on a travel ball team (there were pictures and articles in the local papers and on Edgefield Daily showcasing this). His father stated to anyone who asked him from the beginning of baseball sign ups that he would not be playing rec league ball because he was playing travel ball and they did not want him to overwork his pitching arm. This was also stated to the commissioner of the league for this age group.

And for your information, it was not because their child was not chosen for All Stars that a complaint was filed. It was because there are rules in place to teach these kids not only how to play the game of baseball, but also fairness. And this was not fair to those children that had been there faithfully for every practice and each game. And these children are the ones that make the league what it is, not the parents. This complaint was filed to make those aware that tried to bend, break and even do away with the rules that they are accountable for their actions and it doesn't matter who you are, you still have to play by the rules. Just like those kids and their parents did by registering before the deadline to play baseball.

It’s really sad that the “good ole’ boy” system is present in our youth programs. And it’s even sadder that this parent is teaching his child that you don’t have to work for your achievements, but that you can do whatever you deem necessary to get what you want.

Re:  This county is really (removed) up. We've had our house for sale for 2 yrs. I'd take a loss just to get the (heck) away from here. You can have this (removed).

You think things are bad here?  We spent half of 2009 traveling the country (east to west) to find a place to settle.  Most of this country is in terrible shape; foreclosed houses, businesses, crime (in some of the cities out west we were told we couldn't drive down main roads to get places because of illegal immigrant enclaves that were dangerous to even drive through.....and we'd have to go around them).

So it may be bad here, but it's REALLY bad in other states.  Moving out is not going to get you any place that's any better; only a change in our government leaders is going to turn things around; hopefully it won't be too late.  Vote for change in November.

For those of you who are old enough, do you remember Watergate and the consequences Nixon experienced for his actions? I look at this current administration, our Congress, our local leaders and I shake my head. Where are the consequences these days? People have a disregard for the rule of law. To see the open deceit in our government is beyond comprehension. I guess they do it because they are used to it and they can. What is  our "Watergate" these days? There are too many things that have happened and are happening to think about just one. Isn't that a sad commentary on our government? As Laura Ingram says, "Power to the people!".

The Calliham mess may just be the same old doings in Edgefield, but it isn't right to cheat the taxpayers and good people who just take care of their families and live their lives. If this is the way Edgefield continues to do business, it is a shame. I guess they do it because they can. This is concerning the Dixie Youth Baseball program in Edgefield. I was recently told that a child was not allowed to play all-stars this year because he had only played in only 8 games. I was told that he had to have played in 9 games to qualify unless there was a reason that he could not get 9 games in. I learned that the child was asked to play mid way through the season to help a team that was playing with only 8 players, and that the reason he didn’t play from the beginning was due to injury to his arm. After playing in only 8 games he was chosen by the coaches of the league as an all-star but because of a couple parents of kids who did not make the all-star team, and who I heard would not have made it even if this child had not played, wrote a letter to the state director complaining that they didn’t think this was fair. (WOW)

Since this has happened I still see the boy and his father who are not playing all-stars up at the baseball fields supporting all the other boys playing. I know this father and his son and I know all the time he has put in over the last few years with a lot of these boys in the Edgefield Dixie youth baseball league.

I guess my question is why the President and the league didn’t stand up for someone who has put in so much time trying to make Edgefield County Baseball the best it can be. If it was me I would want my best possible players on the field to represent Edgefield.

Good luck to all the Edgefield County All-Star Teams.

Well, the ECSB is at it again!  They have overlooked a dedicated, highly qualified person who has devoted her entire teahing career to the children of Edgefield County when they filled the position of Assistnat Principal at JET Middle School. I am sure the 2 men who have been hired are also qualified individuals, but come on - the powers that be did not even give our local gal the courtesy of an interview!  This is just another in a string of decisions that are being made by Crenshaw and Clinkscales without rhyme or reason, and more importantly, without consideration for our children adn the future of Edgefield County School District!  The Compliance Specialist position was advertised, highly qualified local individuals were interviewed and a recommendation to hire was made....then the position was frozen, and now - poof - it is gone! The Director of Exceptional Children resigned, and there has been no indication that this position will be filled.  Folks, this district is going to be in BIG trouble when the laws regarding special education students start getting overlooked becasue these 2 positions are no longer in place.  I'm just saying...

Editor's note: I am told the person hired has long and deep roots to Edgfeild County.

Editor’s note: I have heard several similar claims, but not from Mr. Parkman. As I understand the requirements, he is eligible to file to run, but I think he would have a hard time explaining why he was forced to “retire” by not being reappointed.

From The London Daily Telegraph On Foreign Relations
"Let me be clear: I'm not normally in favour of boycotts, and I love the American people. I holiday in their country regularly, and hate the tedious snobby sneers against the United States. But the American people chose to elect an idiot who seems hell bent on insulting their allies, and something must be done to stop Obama's reckless foreign policy, before he does the dirty on his allies on every issue."
--London Daily Telegraph editor -- Alex Singleton, April 11

One of the most poorly kept secrets in Washington is President Obama's animosity toward Great Britain, presumably because of what he regards as its sins while ruling Kenya (1895-1963).

One of Barack Hussein Obama's first acts as president was to return to Britain a bust of Winston Churchill that had graced the Oval Office since 9/11.  He followed this up by denying Prime Minister Gordon Brown, on his first state visit, the usual joint press conference with flags.

The president was "too tired" to grant the leader of America's closest ally a proper welcome, his aides told British journalists.

Mr. Obama followed this up with cheesy gifts for Mr. Brown and the Queen. Columnist Ian Martin described his behavior as "rudeness personified." There was more rudeness in store for Mr. Brown at the opening session of the United Nations in September. "The prime minister was forced to dash through the kitchens of the UN in New York to secure five minutes of face time with President Obama after five requests for a sit down meeting were rejected by the White House," said London Telegraph columnist David Hughes. Mr. Obama's "churlishness is unforgivable," Mr. Hughes said.

The administration went beyond snubs and slights last week when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton endorsed the demand of Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, a Hugo Chavez ally, for mediation of Argentina's specious claim to the Falkland Islands, a British dependency since 1833. The people who live in the Falklands, who speak English, want nothing to do with Argentina. When, in 1982, an earlier Argentine dictatorship tried to seize the Falklands by force, the British -- with strong support from President Ronald Reagan -- expelled them.

"It is truly shocking that Barack Obama has decided to disregard our shared history," wrote Telegraph columnist Toby Young. "Does Britain's friendship really mean so little to him?" One could ask, does the friendship of anyone in the entire world mean anything to him?

"I recently asked several senior administration officials, separately, to name a foreign leader with whom Barack Obama has forged a strong personal relationship during his first year in office," wrote Jackson Diehl, deputy editorial page editor of the Washington Post, on Monday. "A lot of hemming and hawing ensued." One official named French President Nicolas Sarkozy, but his contempt for Mr. Obama is an open secret. Another named German Chancellor Angela Merkel. But, said Mr. Diehl, "Merkel too has been conspicuously cool toward Obama."

Mr. Obama certainly doesn't care about the Poles and Czechs, whom he has betrayed on missile defense. Honduras and Israel also can attest that he's been an unreliable ally and an unfaithful friend.  Ironically, our relations with both Israel and the Palestinian Authority have never been worse. Russia has offered nothing in exchange for Mr. Obama's abandonment of missile defense. Russia and China won't support serious sanctions on Iran. Syria's support for terrorism has not diminished despite efforts to normalize diplomatic relations. The reclusive military dictatorship that runs Burma has responded to our efforts at "engagement" by deepening its ties to North Korea.

And the Chinese make little effort to disguise their contempt for him.

For the first time in a long time, the President of the United States is actually distrusted by its' allies and not in the least feared by its' adversaries. Nor is Mr. Obama now respected by the majority of Americans. Understandably focused on the dismal economy and Mr. Obama's relentless efforts to nationalize and socialize health care, Americans apparently have yet to notice his dismal performance and lack of respect in the world community.

They soon will.

Editor's post: If I hear another "that's the way we've always done it" or "I don't know" from our tenured county council members I think I will throw up.

Can anyone in the county government take responsibility for what goes on? Anybody, somebody?

In my heart I believe it is not a question of whether or not there is corruption in our local government, but rather a matter of whether or not our "tenured leaders" can even spell "corruption" much less define it. In addition, where is County Administrator Alton Brown in all of this? Why the closed doors and refusal to meet with the press?

I realize the Citizen News and the Edgefield Advertiser is not going to ask the hard questions, that is to be expected, but why hide from Edgefield Daily when the fecal matter hits the fan?

If there is nothing to hide, why hide?

It is time County Adminstrator Alton Brown goes on the record on the hard questions on county matters. The honeymoon is over. Step up to the plate or be relegated as one of the water bearers of the past who have been run out of the job for doing the same thing.

There may be more than one seat challanged in Novemeber and his job might just hang in the balance on the outcome, as well as county attorney Michael Medlock's. The single seat up for grabs in November could send a shockwave through the county government, even more if two seats are overturned.

What's the difference between Alexander of the KKK and Jeremiah Wright?  Oh I forgot, Alexander at least makes known his intentions of bigotry, Jeremiah Wright shields himself and his intentions behind the cloak and calls himself a man of God.  Regardless, they both spew hatred and racism.

White people who disagree with the opposite color are categorized with that of the KKK and are labeled racists.  Black people are just preachers, ah hum, Wright, Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan, et al.

General Cosgrove was interviewed on the radio recently.  Love his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you're going to love this! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military headquarters.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE: Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went momentarily silent and the interview ended

Now today on the same highway, there was another pile of wood, boards, furniture along the road in a different location. If you must dump your trash along the side of the road, why not place it at your drive way. Then we would know who is doing this disgrace to our communitiy. I think big piles like these should be tested for dna or prints so that the people can be identified and fined or better yet given community service picking up trash along our highways in hours for the amount of pounds of trash they discarded. Thanks for listening.

Who cares that the KKK came to town. If you don’t agree don’t go.. if you do agree then go..Freedom of speech is what we have, that doesn’t mean everyone has to agree or like with what you say. If you went knowing you were against what they represent, that is your own fault. You only went to make a scene or to go back and talk about the fact that you went and didn’t like it. The only people that would’ve attended the rally are those who had interest or those who wanted to make trouble. Frankly I don’t see the issue of White and Black, I see the issue of people not using our rights appropriately. They could have came to town for their “rally” and only had a crowd of maybe three or four, that would have made them move on.. But no.. we have some who stir the pot and had to “show out” or say things that could have been held back, now they say they are coming back… good going people.. you did the exact opposite of acting like an adult..time for a pacifier.. We have been hearing fairly steady weapons reports in the distance for some time now. We have heard them at all times of the day, from very early morning (approx. 7:00AM) to early evening (approx. 7:00PM), and even on Sunday mornings. We have contacted ECSO but they said they were not aware of any weapon firing but would look into it. We have not got a return call from ECSO. I am sure that someone near the area where the weapons are being used must be annoyed more than we are. Although the decibel level is lower at our home than that specified in the County noise ordinance, it is still annoying. The individuals should, at a minimum, curtail their operations to Monday through Friday between 8:00AM and 4:00PM.

We live in the Horn Creek West area. The weapons reports sound as if they are coming from North-northwest of our location. The distance is hard to determine because we do not know what size weapons they are, but it could be anywhere between a couple to a few miles. Any information would be appreciated.

Editor's note: I would tend to believe that is coming from testing by Force Protection which has a testing ground north of your location. They build and test military vehicles for use in the War on Terror. I'm sorry, Obama says we cannot use that term anymore. I guess we can call it a military action overseas that he hasn't been able to apologize for, yet.

But I digress. The only number I have for the company that I can release is 843-574-7187. You could call and ask if the noise you are hearing is from them. If you do not hear back from the Sheriff's Office on your complaints I would call and speak to Sheriff Adell Dobey or Capt. Chris Wash (803-637-5337).

Many other counties did not issue them a permit to gather but Edgefield gave them a platform. It seems like they didn't appreciate the fact that they had a place to gather. I guess they have a right to free speech but they sure don't seem to appreciate it when someone else exercises their right to free speech.  Did Edgefield open a can of worms? Things like this only cause division and hatred. How embarrassing for Edgefield.

SO WHY IS EVERYBODY SO UPSET ABOUT ARIZONA? Simple solutions to not so complex problems!

The "Show Me" state has once again showed us how it should be done. They need more publication and exposure on this. Let's pass it around.

In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the Official language of Missouri. Nearly 90% voting in favor! English became the official language for ALL governmental proceeding in Missouri. It also means no individual has the right to demand government services in a language OTHER than English.

In 2008 a measure was passed that requires our Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officials to verify the immigration status of any person arrested, and inform federal authorities if the person is found to be here illegally. It allows Missouri law enforcement offices to receive training to enforce federal immigration laws. The bill makes it clear that illegal immigrants will NOT have access to taxpayers benefits such as food stamps and health care through Missouri HealthNET.

In 2009 a measure was passed that ensures Missouri's public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial aid to individuals who are here illegally. The law also requires all post-secondary institutions of higher education to annually certify to the Missouri Dept. of Higher Education that they have NOT knowingly awarded financial aid to students who are unlawfully present in the United States.

So while Arizona has made national news for its new law, it is important to remember Missouri has been proactive in addressing this growing problem.  Missouri has sent a clear message that illegal immigrants are NOT welcome in our state and they are certainly NOT welcome to receive public benefits at the cost of Missouri taxpayers!

The Clan coming to Edgefield was a joke. I graduated from STh in 1978 and married a "WHITE" girl. I dated two african-american girls and still love both of them and consider them close friends. I caught (heck) from friends at the time but I didn't care. We're all just people and it don't matter what color you are.  Some people just need to get over the race thing. My best friend is one of them and my wife loves her as much as I do. We're all God's children. Skin color doesn't matter. I know whites that I wouldn't let step foot on my property. What's race got to do with that?
web posted June 21, 2010
The news article on the Klan visit included the following, “Asked whether or not he was a “racist” Mr. Alexander responded, “I am a segregationist. I believe in segregation.” Asked to explain the difference between racist and racial Mr. Alexander said, “You do not see dogs and cats” interbreeding and he felt the same way in the human race. “You don’t see interbreeding between species for a reason. I believe in the right of the white race to breed in the state of their own.”
“It’s the way God should want things put,” Alexander said.”

Dogs and cats don't interbreed but black dogs breed with white dogs and white cats breed with black cats. It is notable that God's man, Moses, was married to a Cushite, possibly an Ethopian, (Numbers 12:1) . The Apostle's teaching in Galatians 3:26 provides, “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

It is unlikely, however, to have a productive conversation with a Klansman because his motivation is derived from hate and his heritage is born in political terrorism, like the Red Shirts of old. The Klan's motivations appear more aligned with those of radical Islam.

One curious thought is how will such people handle the Wedding Feast of the Lamb when faced with people from every tribe and nation? Will those who despise their fellow man ask that certain people be excluded, will they exclude themselves or will there be no invitation? They play a dangerous game, not with their lives but with their souls.

Yes, our world is not perfect, but groups like the KKK and the NAACP certainly don't make it any better. The KKK was created out of race hate, the NAACP in response to race hate. I think we should all go back to the principles that the NAACP was founded upon, rights and equality based on fairness, not color. Even the NAACP today has an agenda that is more about politics than what is right or what is wrong.

How did we end up here? Controlled by the Rich and Capitalist Giants?
After watching what is happened to Oil Giant in the Gulf, and other capitalist endeavors it is very easy to see how we ended up where we are in this oil spill saga. From the very beginning of the Bush’s presidency, “Trickle down economy was the rules we played by”. Give the rich and the capitalist giants as much tax break as possible, and cut taxes on any funds generated by the rich and capitalists (President Bush pushed a dividend tax cut through the Republican-controlled Congress, reducing the maximum tax rate to be paid on dividends to only 15 percent. . The taxes the Middle Class paid on interest could go as high as 35%.). I imagine that is why the taxes one pays on the TERI money received by state workers participating in the TERI program is so high. ‘Trickle down economy did not work in America. As a matter of fact, it didn’t work in Rome either. This was one of the causes of *the fall of the Roman Empire. The ideas were good but the people guiding the hen’s house were not good Americans looking out for the welfare of the American people. The people guarding the hen house were money grabbing capitalist who were hooked on money. The door was opened for them to feast and feast they did. Even before the first plane hit the towers in New York, plans were being made to take control of the oil wells in Iraq, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/newsnight/4354269.stm. Before the first ‘shock and awe’ bomb hit Iraq, the countries had been discussing how the oil would be divided once Bush declared war on Iraq.
In the following links, it will show that BP and other non-Americans companies had begun threatening Bush that if/or when the war between America and Iraq begin, he could not carve up Iraq oil wells to Americans companies. BP chief was one of the biggest protesters of America taking over Iraq oil wells. It also illustrates the connection between BP and Tony Blair. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2002/oct/30/oil.iraq; www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002/nov/03/iraq.oil, and . http://www.bp.com/genericarticle.do?categoryId=2012968&contentId=7037819 BP got a free pass in Iraq and in America. Once the marriage between Bush’s presidency and BP oil giant was formulated, the door was opened for disaster. Some of you are probably saying this happened on Obama’s and the Democrats watch. But when BP disasters happened under Bush and the Republican’s watch, no one noticed. In 2005 and 2006 a new CEO was placed over BP’s American’s operations
because of previous disaster. The two previous disaster BP’s on American soil were a BP refinery explosion in Texas City, Tex. which killed 15 workers and injured hundreds more and the second disaster was when oil was discovered leaking from a 16-mile stretch of corroded BP pipeline in Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. Unlike EXXON VALDEZ, BP continued to ignore safety violations because of their close connections with the Republicans. That is why you had the Senator from Texas apologizing to the CEO of BP for President Obama’s handling of BP. All the America’s oil companies together had fewer violations than BP.” Don’t get me wrong, I do believe BP was trying to get their act together because they realized that their relationship with MMS and the government was coming to an end. The Democrats would look out for the ‘small people’ in America.

Editor's note: Obviously you have little historical information and rely on the liberal media for slanted information.
The fall of the Roman Empire came when the moocher class learned they could vote to have the public treasury delivered to them by voting in self-serving politicians. Today we call them Democrats.

The Light Turned Yellow

An honest mistake...

The light turned yellow, just in front of him.  He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.  The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup.

As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.  The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.  He took her to the police station where she was searched fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door.  She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said,  ''I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do'  bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally...I  assumed you had stolen the car.'' Priceless...

Democrats  Vote Down 5 Percent Rule

In a bid to stem taxpayer losses for bad loans guaranteed by federal housing agencies Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac, Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn) proposed that borrowers be required to make a 5% down payment in order to qualify.

His proposal was rejected 57-42 on a party-line vote because, as Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn) explained, "passage  of such a requirement would restrict home ownership to only those who can  afford it."

Duh!!!

Ruling by Judge William Young, US District Court.

Prior to sentencing, the Judge asked the defendant if he had anything to say  His response: After admitting his guilt to the court for the record, Reid also admitted his 'allegiance to Osama bin Laden, to Islam, and to the religion of Allah,' defiantly stating, 'I think I will not apologize for my actions,' and told the court 'I am at war with your country.'

Judge Young then delivered the statement quoted below:

Judge Young:  'Mr. Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the Court imposes upon you.

On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to life in prison in the custody of the United States Attorney General.  On counts 2, 3, 4and 7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the sentence on each count to run consecutively.  (That's 80 years.)

On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years again, to be served consecutively to the 80 years just imposed.  The Court imposes upon you for each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000 that's an aggregate fine of $2 million.  The Court accepts the government's recommendation with respect to restitution and orders restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to American Airlines.

The Court imposes upon you an $800 special assessment. The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because the law requires it. But the life sentences are real life sentences so I need go no further.

This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes.  It is a fair and just sentence.  It is a righteous sentence.

Now, let me explain this to you.  We are not afraid of you or any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid.  We are Americans.  We have been through the fire before.  There is too much war talk here and I say that to everyone with the utmost respect.  Here in this court, we deal with individuals as individuals and care for individuals as individuals.  As human beings, we reach out for justice.

You are not an enemy combatant.  You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war.  You are a terrorist.  To give you that reference, to call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature. Whether the officers of government do it or your attorney does it, or if you think you are a soldier, you are not----- you are a terrorist.  And we do not negotiate with terrorists.  We do not meet with terrorists.  We do not sign documents with terrorists.  We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice.

So war talk is way out of line in this court  You are a big fellow. But you are not that big.  You're no warrior.  I've known warriors. You are a terrorist.  A species of criminal that is guilty of multiple attempted murders.  In a very real sense, State Trooper Santiago had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and the TV crews were, and he said: 'You're no big deal.'

You are no big deal.

What your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific.  What was it that led you here to this courtroom today?

I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty and admit you are guilty of doing?  And, I have an answer for you.  It may not satisfy you, but as I search this entire record, it comes as close to understanding as I know.

It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You hate our freedom.  Our individual freedom.  Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not believe as we individually choose.  Here, in this society, the very wind carries freedom.  It carries it everywhere from sea to shining sea.  It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom, so that everyone can see, truly see, that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely.  It is for freedom's sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf, have filed appeals, will go on in their representation of you before other judges.

We Americans are all about freedom.  Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties.  Make no mistake though.  It is yet true that we will bear any burden; pay any price, to preserve our freedoms.  Look around this courtroom.  Mark it well.  The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here.  The day after tomorrow, it will be forgotten, but this, however, will long endure.

Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America , the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice, justice, not war, individual justice is in fact being done.  The very President of the United States through his officers will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice.

See that flag, Mr. Reid?  That's the flag of the United States of America .  That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag stands for freedom.  And it always will.

Mr. Custody Officer.  Stand him down.

So, how much of this Judge's comments did we hear on our TV sets?  We need more judges like Judge Young.  Pass this around.  Everyone should and needs to hear what this fine judge had to say. Powerful words that strike home.

Editor's note: According to transcripts (CNN) of the trial and Snopes, this is an accurate account.

Specifically, there is an annual contest at Texas A&M University calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term.
This year's term was:

"Political Correctness."

 The winner wrote:

"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

It is pretty sad that South Carolina is represented by the likes of Clyburn in the media. He needs to get his head out of Obama’s rectum and do a better job of representing his State and his constituents – not just the black ones. First it was the Republicans, then it’s a hacker or the fact that South Carolina chose not to spend millions on new voting machines. What’s next – Killer Klown’s from outer space? Good thing Clyburn has ten fingers to point in ten different directions. Something is likely wrong with the selection of Greene as Demint’s opponent. It couldn’t possibly be racism could it? No. White people are the only ones who vote for someone because of the color of their skin right? Time may reveal a sliver of the truth whatever it may be. I hope so. The less the country sees of Clyburn the better.

Additionally, Clyburn and the press has made an issue of where the nominee got his money. Hello - where do most politicians really get their money? Let’s examine Clyburn’s financial records and see how squeaky clean he is or any other politician that has a complaint.

I am so tired of the comments about the schools here. If you are fortunate enough to have a choice and your child goes to Wardlaw or Fox Creek, get over it. You always have the choice to be in public schools. Actually, public schools worked out just fine for our kids-they are all educated, responsible and happy adults. People are way too entitled these days. If you are looking for a family, I am not sure a school is where you need to look. No place like a school will remain a "family" for long-way too many egos get involved and that ruins any situation. I say, get over yourselves and support your kids. It is the child's family that really matters, not the school.

All this friendly attention is something new for Haley. Until a few months ago, she had succeeded in politics in part by choosing the right enemies.

There was a memorial service two days ago in Beckley, West Virginia for the 29 coal miners who died at the nearby Upper Big Branch mine April 5th.
Twenty-eight hundred people attended the service.  Most of them were there to pay their respects and console the grieving.  At least a couple of them were there to make symbolic, political appearances.
Many of the working class men who died were veterans and some of them rode motorcycles.  A source has told this page that “Families of the miners killed in the explosion…had requested the Patriot Guard Riders attend.”  The Patriot Guard Riders is an informal club of veteran motorcyclists which exists to make sure that all veterans are given respectful funerals.  And, they were banned from this service by federal officials because those officials believe the Patriot Guard is a security threat.
Cleared With Governor
The appearance of the Patriot Guard at the service, at the request of at least several families, was cleared by West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin.  Travis Mollohan, a senior aide to the Governor worked with the Patriot Riders to arrange a staging location.
The day before the service, Joe Cumblidge, the West Virginia State Captain of the Patriot Guards emailed the men who were scheduled to participate:  “Due to circumstances totally and completely beyond the control of the Patriot Guard Riders and Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia, we are regrettably ordering a STAND DOWN for this mission.  Specific details will not be posted here but, we’ve been told we are not welcome to participate because of certain high-level dignitaries that are scheduled to be in attendance.”

The “high-level dignitaries” were (drum roll ...................................................) Obama and Biden.

Who'd have guessed (sarcasm). He has his Homeland Security lackey (Napolitano) declare that returning combat vets are potential terrorist threats and now disallows a group of mostly vets, who the miners' families requested - the only group in the country (volunteers, all) that will stand in honor of any vet from any era, plus cops and firefighters, at any time and in any place and in any weather - from attending the memorial service. Barry's defenders are saying it's because the Secret Service couldn't risk it; didn't know who might be in the group. But there were 2,800 people there, from around the state and even beyond, and the SS didn't know who might be among that throng either. It was a disgraceful, contemptuous slap in every veteran's face, especially combat vets and, even more so, those who've shed blood and/or died for our country. Reminds me of how the libs label Tea Party events as racist and mob-like, which video evidence proves they are not, while their own pro-immigration and pro-abortion and anti-gun rallies are seething with hate and racism and incitement. Each one of those flag- bearing vets would have stood silently at attention throughout the memorial - no matter how long - many with silent tears trickling down their face, and when it was over, many of those same "terrorist threats" would have made a point to wait again for as long as it took to offer condolences and hugs to the widows and fatherless children, faces still wet with tears. This - he - makes me sick.

Reference your tirade directed at the voters of Council District 1.  You are attacking the people that voted in the Republican Primary.  Your anger should not be directed at those of us who felt they needed to vote in the Republican Primary.  It should be directed at those that did not vote at all.

Editor's note: If you voted Republican in District 1 rather than voting in your county council race, you carry part of the blame. If 20 people had done otherwise we would have been rid of the insane ramblings of Norman Dorn.
web posted June 10, 2010

To use a phrase that the editor uses quite frequently, elections have consequences. With Mr. Bright and Mr. Dorn being reelected the only seat left open is Chairman Kneece’s position. If Mr. (Frank) Nicholson is elected over Mr. (Dean) Campbell, Mr. Bright or Mr. Dorn or both would be in leadership positions. I believe Mr. Fred Humes made a point to say that the reason companies do not come to Edgefield County is due to the “quality” of elected officials in a recent meeting. If the people of Edgefield County are not willing to place qualified leadership on our county council were are doomed to be the cesspool of the state. I was not born and raised in Edgefield and my wife and I chose to relocate here. The election in November will determine if we stay in Edgefield.

I did vote for Talbert in the Democratic Primary with the intention of ousting Dorn. My favorite in the Republican Primary, Haley, was at least assured of a run-off I felt. I continue to be very frustrated by the representation we receive in District 1, and unless district lines are redrawn (we are only a few hundred feet out of Ashcraft’s district), I will continue to complain about the “County Clowncilman” if you don’t mind and the sometimes ineffectiveness of the council itself.

If I were more knowledgeable about how to be an effective council representative I would run myself in future elections. How can you learn about the position and what qualifications are necessary?

Editor's note: The filing fee is $168 and you have to be a resident and registered voter to run for county council in the primary election. There is nothing to stop you from running as a write-in candidate in the November election and there is no filing fee.  If you voted in the election you have every right to complain. Perhaps I should have placed that disclaimer as you will see in other comments below.

Well, I think alot of people did not turn out because they too are fed up with this kind of politics. Why can't you just run on what you are suppose to be running for to better the county - you ideas; ambitions; your willingness to do the right thing no matter who you have to stand up against. all this lying; false accusations is crazy. Where have  people put themselves as far as

Also, if it was all about money at the clinic, then the doctors would be practicing somewhere else than in small-town Edgefield. If it wasn't for the doctors there, the hospital would not be there (the founders started the hospital). Maybe if your doctor
would have notified her patients that she was leaving, you could have gotten the place and phone number from her, but I guess since she didn't, she didn't have HER patients in mind. Do you know for sure that she told the staff there where she was going? I guess you don't. If you want to follow her and spend that money on gas, go ahead. One vote against Dorn was lost when I went to, reluctantly, vote Democrat yesterday.  The two color cards (pink and blue) for the opposing sides aren't labeled for the voters to see, yet they will willingly say out loud which way you're voting when you come in.  I signed to vote Democrat, but when they looked at me, I guess they assumed I was voting Republican. Seeing how vague voting procedures are here, and the poll workers themselves taking such little time to make sure it's done right, it's no wonder that they plugged in a Republican ballot for me.  After the voting was cast, I wondered why there were none of the names I had intended to vote for, or against.  That was one. When I returned, after I found out what happened, they said, "I'm sorry but there's nothing we can do."  So there is one more vote that was intended to vote for Talbert that didn't get counted.

Overall the numbers were pitiful.  Don't go screaming when taxes are more and services are less especially if you were too lazy to get out of your comfortable  chair and vote for people who really give a darn about the citizens and not their own power.   Keep the spotlight on, we can't take any more shenanigans.  We certainly don't need to go backward.  We need a big Tea Party in Edgefield.  Hallelujah at least the one who stands up for what is right won the primary.  Good going Ashcraft.

3. In a District this small, why can't the Superintendent fill the role of educational leader in the District?

My greater concerns:
1. I read her resume. All of the credits listed for various programs amount to little more than all teachers have gone through at inservices. Most of the in-depth training she claims were one-week programs that were designed to give both adnministrators and other interested instructional personnel information to bring back to their districts and share. Large numnbers of teachers in any school district can claim her training credentials. In addition, many of the programs she touts on her resume have already been dropped by most districts. They merely are a list of dogama of the day programs that come and go by the boatlaod in education.I, and countless others, can claim the same programs on my resume.
2. I looked up the college where she got her bachelor's degree and read their information about their degrees programs. If you do the same, you will find out that the great majority of her course work was designed around Christian Ministry. Relatively little was a liberal arts type curriculum preparing people to teach a wide variety of subject matter. Many of their course offerings seem designed to come up with a Christian slant to insturction in all subject areas. When they say it is a Christian College, they are not kidding. There reason for existance is Christian ministry. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but these are public schools.
3. Her Master's Program is from an on-line program. It was not from a mainstream college of university. I did not read all of the details, but most of those programs do not even require a GRE to get into the programs and if you pay your tuition and do the online work, you will be awarded a degree.
4. Her Doctorate is from a similar type program.

Both of her graduate degrees were obtained while working here in SC. One of the programs is based out of Illinois and the other Minnesota. It is entirely possible she has never been to either state and still got degrees from those programs. They are typical of the degrees gotten by other educators to increase their pay and status without having to do coursework at a conventional university. The names of the on-line programs are always impressive and give an aura of being upper echelon. Her online program, according to their website, graduated 700 Doctorates last year. I doubt if the entire University system in South Carolina had that many Doctorates in all fields. They must be very good to have that many Doctorates in a single year.

One must ask who checked into this before hiring her. One must also point out that she worked in Clarendon. What an amazing coincidence. We now have two top-level administrators from a not very good school district.

The title of the books are "The decline and fall of the roman empire." written by Gibbon The books were sold to a James Madsion Abney before the library got them.

Strategic Media Services placed a joint statewide advertising "buy" for the campaigns of State Treasurer Converse Chellis (re-election) and Mick Zais (candidate for Superintendent of Education).  This joint buy began on May 25, 2010 and is scheduled to run through June 8, 2010 (Primary Day).

When you look at the public files of the tv stations Zais/Chellis WIS media buy, the collaboration is clear.

There are strict state ethics guidelines – detailed below – that prohibit “coordinated expenditures” of the Chellis/Zais variety.

Six stations across the state (see below) refused to run the joint ads because of concerns regarding their legality per state and federal law.

I have just returned from graduation at STHS. As a teacher, I am always appalled at the behavior of much of the crowd. This is a formal ceremony, not a football game. The people behind us talked the entire time, either to each other or on their phones. You see this lack of respect for others daily in the actions and speech of our young people. Certainly it's not all of them, but few of them display basic respect and mannerly behavior. These graduates deserve better, and the adults need to learn some manners and pass them on to their children!

AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP!

That's what we think we heard on the 11th of September 2001 (When more than 3,000 Americans were killed) and maybe it was, but I think it should have been 'Get Out of Bed!' In fact, the alarm clock has been buzzing since 1979 and we have continued to hit the snooze button and roll over for a few more minutes of peaceful sleep since then.

It was a cool fall day in November 1979 in a country going through a religious and political upheaval when a group of Iranian students attacked and seized the American Embassy in Tehran . This seizure was an outright attack on American soil; it was an attack that held the world's most powerful country hostage and paralyzed a Presidency  The attack on this sovereign U. S. Embassy set the stage for events to follow for the next 25 years.

America was still reeling from the aftermath of the Vietnam experience and had a serious threat from the Soviet Union when then, President Carter, had to do something. He chose to conduct a clandestine raid in the desert. The ill-fated mission ended in ruin, but stood as a symbol of America's inability to deal with terrorism.

America 's military had been decimated and down sized since the end of the Vietnam War. A poorly trained, poorly equipped and poorly organized military was called on to execute a complex mission that was doomed from the start.

Shortly after the Tehran experience, Americans began to be kidnapped and killed throughout the Middle East . America could do little to protect her citizens living and working abroad. The attacks against US soil continued.

In April of 1983 a large vehicle packed with high explosives was driven into the US Embassy compound in Beirut When it explodes, it kills 63 people. The alarm went off again and America hit the Snooze Button once more.

Then just six short months later in 1983 a large truck heavily laden down with over 25 00 pounds of TNT smashed through the main gate of the US Marine Corps headquarters in Beirut and 241 US servicemen are killed. America mourns her dead and hit the Snooze Button once more.

Two months later in December 1983, another truck loaded with explosives is driven into the US Embassy in Kuwait , and America continues her slumber.

The following year, in September 1984, another van was driven into the gate of the US Embassy in Beirut and America slept.

Soon the terrorism spreads to Europe . In April 1985 a bomb explodes in a restaurant frequented by US soldiers in Madrid

Then in August 1985 a Volkswagen loaded with explosives is driven into the main gate of the US Air Force Base at Rheine-Main, 22 are killed and the snooze alarm is buzzing louder and louder as US interests are continually attacked.

Fifty-nine days later in 1985 a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro is hijacked and we watched as an American in a wheelchair is singled out of the passenger list and executed.

The terrorists then shift their tactics to bombing civilian airliners when they bomb TWA Flight 840 in April of 1986that killed 4 and the most tragic bombing, Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie , Scotland in 1988, killing 259.

The wake up alarm is getting louder and louder.

The terrorists decide to bring the fight to America . In January 1993, two CIA agents are shot and killed as they enter CIA headquarters in Langley , Virginia

The following month, February 1993 , a group of terrorists are arrested after a rented van packed with explosives is driven into the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City . Six people are killed and over 1000 are injured. Still this is a crime and not an act of war? The Snooze alarm is depressed again.

Then in November 1995 a car bomb explodes at a US military complex in Riyadh  Saudi Arabia killing seven service men and women.

A few months later in June of 1996, another truck bomb explodes only 35 yards from the US military compound in Dhahran , Saudi Arabia . It destroys the Khobar Towers , a US Air Force barracks, killing 19 and injuring over 500. The terrorists are getting braver and smarter as they see that America does not respond decisively.

They move to coordinate their attacks in a simultaneous attack on two US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania .  These attacks were planned with precision. They kill 224. America responds with cruise missile attacks and goes back to sleep.

The USS Cole was docked in the port of Aden, Yemen for refueling on 12 October 2000 , when a small craft pulled along side the ship and exploded killing 17 US Navy Sailors. Attacking a US War Ship is an act of war, but we sent the FBI to investigate the crime and went back to sleep.

And of course you know the events of 11 September 2001. Most Americans think this was the first attack against US soil or in America . How wrong they are. America has been under a constant attack since 1979 and we chose to hit the snooze alarm and roll over and go back to sleep.

In the news lately we have seen lots of finger pointing from every high official in government over what they knew and what they didn't know. But if you've read the papers and paid a little attention I think you can see exactly what they knew. You don't have to be in the FBI or CIA or on the National Security Council to see the pattern that has been developing since 1979.

I think we have been in a war for the past 25 years and it will continue until we as a people decide enough is enough. America needs to 'Get out of Bed' and act decisively now. America has been changed forever.  We have to be ready to pay the price and make the sacrifice to ensure our way of life continues. We cannot afford to keep hitting the snooze button again and again and roll over and go back to sleep.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor , Admiral Yamamoto said '... it seems all we have done is awakened a sleeping giant.' This is the message we need to disseminate to terrorists around the world.

This is not a political thing to be hashed over in an election year, this is an AMERICAN thing. This is about our Freedom and the Freedom of our children in years to come.

I  have a couple of thoughts concerning (the) article on the destruction of the political signs. First there are too many of those signs put up in the rights of ways. The sign posting has been out of hand for years – political signs and business solicitations. They are not maintained, they are hardly ever removed and are unsightly. In addition, I do not expect, nor should anyone else expect, our state/ county workers to get off the equipment every time they come across these signs to stop, remove them, cut the grass, then stop again and put the signs back up. This just wastes the workers time which wastes our tax dollars.

That being said I have also often noticed that the mowing crews do mow over everything along the roads – trash and all. The operators do not stand on any higher moral ground because they choose to just mow over everything in their path.

The solutions:
Punish those responsible for putting signs up in inappropriate places. Ensure the ones put up legally are maintained/ removed as necessary. It is not hard to figure out what organization or business is responsible.

County citizens need to be more responsible and not litter our roads – grow up and act civilized! Maybe when we catch these clowns we should all go dump our trash in their yard for a month. This is a country wide problem. Hold yourself, your family and fellow citizens accountable.

Get more of the prisoners in local jails/ prisons out from their life of undeserved luxuries and on the sides of the roads picking up litter before mowing begins.

DOT – Do not allow mowing until litter is removed. Mowing over litter just creates more litter doesn’t it?

Editor's note: Edgefield County Councilwoman Genia Blackwell has been looking into creating an ordinance to force candidates to remove their signs within ten days of the general elections (losing candidates after the primary). It is not expected to be debated until next year.

I could not agree more on not mowing until trash has been picked up. I have seen glass being strewn across the roadways by mowers (and paper trash increased) as SCDOT workers are out "just doing their job".

Dear Editor,
I moved to Edgefield a few years ago, and drive down Jeter St. toward Modoc on my way home.  There is an old antebellum house on Jeter St. that appears abandoned.  It sits off the road (on the right side if traveling to Modoc) and the land around it is overgrown.  There are what appear to be maybe slave cabins right along the road that are falling down.  I am a history buff and was wondering if you knew who this house belongs/belonged to and the history of it.  I read Edgefield Daily often, and you seem to be in the know, so I thought maybe you would know the history or someone I could ask about the history of the house.  Thanks for all your help!

Attention Edgefield County Employees....If Scott Mims is in your County Council district and you are considering voting for him, please be aware that he has made the comment to more than one person that county employees will lose their insurance next year.  Apparently, he has little regard for those who make the wheels of the county turn and feels that he can better the county at employees expense.  We are on the brink of a new day in Edgefield County.  We have two members of Council that have shown they have knowledge, the ability to think for themselves and a desire to see this county and its people flourish.  I am speaking of Mrs. Blackwell and Mr. Ashcraft.  Mr. Kneece is out.  If we replace Mr. Dorn and Mr. Bright then the ties that have been holding this county back will be broken.  Scott Mims is a chosen one.  Show those that chose him that their rein is over.

Come on Editor! Tax dollars are being wasted across the board. So you would rather waste them on new cars for law enforcement? How many criminals have gotten away because the police car broke down? Too often cars are recycled out of duty when they have plenty of service life left. The old cars just do not have the newest graphics, or put on fantastic light shows, etc… If the cars are mechanically deficient and the cost of repairs are not relative to the value of the vehicle, then you may have an argument. And that is an argument that needs to be put before the council and proven to be fact. Mileage alone is not justification to purchase new vehicles for law enforcement.

Tax payers are getting fed up! Take notice of the recent vote in Aiken County concerning school upgrades. Do some of the schools need upgrades? Likely yes. But it is also likely that enough money has been wasted to make some of those upgrades. Just handing out tax dollars, or increasing taxes, to build schools, or buy patrol cars, etc… is not acceptable anymore. We fully expect government to manage the many dollars they are getting from us already to do their jobs. Tighten your belts like the rest of us. Throwing more tax dollars at a problem is irresponsible. Those asking for more without justification are not being honest nor good stewards of our money.

Editor's note: How is purchasing needed patrol cars "wasting money"? Wouldn't passing out tax dollars to entities that do not provide a "county service" or produce no revenues for the county be "wasteful"?

Had never heard the word Dhimmitude, until now---Type it into Google and start reading…Pretty interesting. Note that Muslims and certain other religions are exempt from the Obamacare penalties and it is supported by law. We are surrendering from within! The boy is leading us right down the path to total control!

Dhimmitude is the Muslim system of controlling non-muslim populations conquered through jihad. Specifically, it is the TAXING of non-muslims in exchange for tolerating their presence AND as a coercive means of converting conquered remnants to islam.

The ObamaCare bill is the establishment of Dhimmitude and Sharia muslim diktat in the United States . Muslims are specifically exempted from the government mandate to purchase insurance, and also from the penalty tax for being uninsured. Islam considers insurance to be "gambling", "risk-taking" and "usury" and is thus banned. Muslims are specifically granted exemption based on this. How convenient. So I John Smith, as a Christian, will have crippling IRS liens placed against all of my assets, including real estate, cattle, and even accounts receivables, and will face hard prison time because I refuse to buy insurance or pay the penalty tax. Meanwhile, Louis Farrakhan will have no such penalty and will have 100% of his health needs paid for by the de facto government insurance. Non-muslims will be paying a tax to subsidize muslims. Period. This is Dhimmitude.

Dhimmitude serves two purposes: it enriches the muslim masters AND serves to drive conversions to islam. In this case, the incentive to convert to islam will be taken up by those in the inner-cities as well as the godless Generation X, Y and Z types who have no moral anchor. If you don't believe in Christ to begin with, it is no problem whatsoever to sell Him for 30 pieces of silver. "Sure, I'll be a muslim if it means free health insurance and no taxes. Where do I sign, bro?"

I recommend sending this post to your contacts. This is desperately important and people need to know about it - quickly.

PS Have you heard about the summit Obama is holding this month in DC for the future Muslim business leaders in the US ? He wants to increase their ability to begin business opportunities in the US for the Muslim community!

Editor's note: Maybe it was because Chairman Kneece wasn't there to write on the pages of Councilmen Bright and Dorn's book as to how they should vote on the matters before them. They were left to use their own brains to reach a decision in his absence and they were incapable of doing so.

I was at the county council meeting (Tuesday night) and it was embarrasing to see our "leaders" unable to read English. No wonder we are so far behind other counties. We have illiterate leadership who can't even read the (removed) words written for them to read!!! What a joke!!!!!

I read the article on Scott Mims and Rodney Ashcraft about their positions on county issues. Who wrote Scott's (Mims) answers? It sure as (heck) wasn't him. I thought you said they had to answer "in their own words"? (Removed) Scott can't spell half the words he used. I bet he can't even give the definition of the word "congruent."  Who is running for the seat? Him or his handler?

Poor Scott the men behind the scene forgot to tell you that Rodney Ashcraft met with his constituents several times since taking office not just the month before election.  He also shared his cell phone number with everyone so he has always been available .  He has always been willing to stick his neck out for the issues rather than what the good ole boys want to be done.  He has never been afraid to ask the tough questions and he digs to get the answers.  Scott you will have to travel a long time, experience life in many ways to match up to the man Mr. Ashcraft has demonstrated himself to be.  He not only talks the talk he has demonstrated over and over again he can walk the walk.  Things are shaking in Edgefield.  VOTE ASHCRAFT!

I am glad that the Editor did a Q&A section for the candidates for District 2.  After reading both Mr Ashcraft's and Mr. Mim's, it is quite evident that Mr. Mims lacks both the education and experience that such a position demands.  Mr. Ashcraft has my vote and I have encouraged my neighbors to vote for his re-election.  Great job again Mr. Editor.

Editor's note: The Q&A was sent to all candidates in the primary election. No other candidates have responded at this time.

Wow, I have been reading all the comments that people have been writing about the problems they are having with their school. You have Fox Creek, Wardlaw, STH and so on. I know how it can be because I have been their. I just want every one to know you  have choices. I know you say that you can not home school but you can. There is a great new school out there, It is called K12. It is a online charter school. It is free and they will even provide you with a computer if you don't have one. It is k5 through 12 grade. You have teachers, they will provide you with the school work that they will do for the week. You can talk with the teacher one on one. Your child is not stuck in a class room with kid that are rude that don't care if they cause problems. They will be able to learn. They can work on their on time morning, noon, or night. There is so much more they will go on field trips and they will even do class work with their class mate via the computer. I think it's time to let all those board members know that you are tired of them trying to tell you what is best for your kids and you don't have any say so in it. If more people would take a stand I think all the schools, public or private would get a clue. If you want more info you can go on their web site k12charterschool.com and check it out. Remember it's about getting the best education we can for out kids. Good luck to every one on the up and coming school year.

After reading the responses from Mr. Ashcraft and Mr. Mims I have no doubt who I will vote for. Mr. Ashcraft seems to really understand the issues of this county. He is thinking about what is best for all citizens of our county. He understands the real issues of this county.  I felt that Mr. Mims responses were a little vague and not as specific as Mr. Ashcraft's. Mr. Ashcraft was very forthcoming with his views on such things as funding non profits etc. Mr. Mims did not take a strong stand either way but said the politically correct things.  I want a councilman that really stands up for what he believes in and does what he knows is best for the citizens. I do not want someone who may be influenced to vote for things to benefit some entities in Edgefield.

We have had enough of the talk nationally and locally. I am amazed at  all the "talk" I have heard from some of the "leaders" in Edgefield. It never seems to be advantageous to the citizens but instead helps a few of the elite group in Edgefield. I want to truly be represented by my elected officials. That is why I am totally in support of Rodney Ashcraft. He has shown that he has the best interests of the county in mind on every vote he makes.

The following article came from a link off the Drudge Report today. http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/articles/2010/05/29/local/local02.txt  It's about a resident in Hawaii who refused to answer a Census worker's questions.  The resident called the local police to have the worker removed off his premises for trespassing.  When the police showed up, the Census worker expected the police to take the forms and give them to the resident (who it later turned out to be a retired cop) and tell him to, "fill out the forms because it's the law."  Anyway, the police refused to direct the resident to fill out the forms and when the census worker refused to depart, the police arrested the census worker for trespassing.  Currently this has the Hawaii States Attorney pitted against the U.S. Federal Attorney.  I find this incident fascinating.  Let's look at Arizona's immigration law.  Why did Arizona have to pass one and why do "Sanctuary Cities" exist across the country?  Because the Supreme Court has stated that local law enforcement cannot enforce Federal Law.  So why is it that local law enforcement cannot enforce Federal Immigration Law....yet, they're used to enforce Federal Law (or the threat thereof) of Federal Law pertaining to the U.S. Census....hmmm?    An interesting thought to ponder.

Editor's post: There are just 7 days until the primaries. I see this election as a referendum on either keeping the status quo in power or electing those who will stand up against the "good old boy" system in Edgefield County. County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece is out, upsetting the balance of power by assuring a third new member to the county council in November.

It is going to be interesting. The citizens have a chance to take control of a county council that has been ruled over by outside forces for their own interests, not those of the county taxpayer. A Tea Party election seems to be coming home to roost next week. I encourage all voters to get out and support your candidate. I hope to see a large turnout in what is normally a low turnout off-year election process.

Beginning in August I will be making weekly postings on Wandering Minds in order to air out some “dirty laundry” of the ECSD. These topics will cover a wide variety of issues ranging from things as big as district hiring practices, to how the dismantling of certain departments opens the county up to potential lawsuits, to more trivial issues like the MES “lunch bunch”. My reason for waiting until August to release this information is simply that with the summer right upon us, I do not want this information to get lost in the shuffle of all the summertime activities.

With several seats on the school board up for grabs in November, I hope this information will give the voters some insight into the inner workings of the current school board and superintendent. All of the complaining we do about Dr. Crenshaw and the School Board will not matter unless at least one of 3 or 4 current board members is voted out. At the very least, I hope some of the topics I cover will get all parents, employees, and especially taxpayers of Edgefield County to ask some critical questions of our current leadership.

Between now and August if you have any issue that you want discussed in these messages, just post the topic on Wandering Minds and I will try to cover as many topics as I can once school gets closer to being back in session. Remember Edgefield County School Board, there are eyes watching you!

Editor's note: A Wandering Minds "correspondent". This could be interesting. You are welcome to offer your coverage as a contributing opinion columnist in the Headlines if you prefer.

I was viewing my childs yearbook from JET middle and spotted something that was very bothersome. I don't know who the school advisor is, or the administrator in charge, but not only did they drop the ball they didn't even make it to the ball park. Whoever decides the awards for the eigth graders need to triple check some things. How can a student be given a leadership award when the student spends most of the 2nd semester at the Pride Academy (aka Alternative School) for behavior problems. It shouldn't matter if the student had above average grades. Leadership to me means setting an outstanding example for others to follow. However this award was decided, someone, the editor, school advisor, or an adminstrator, should have been smart enough to override this decision. Use your heads people. You are given or allowed to have these positions because you are supposed to be intelligent in your decision making skills.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.   When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Re: One of the other candidates left the school hanging high and dry, yes, quit her job and never offered the current bookkeeper ANY help whatsoever nor did she return any of her calls for help.

From your comments, I suspect these are things you have been told and not first hand knowledge.  If you attended FCHS Board of Director meetings, you would know the circumstances surrounding the situation, which did not involve her quitting a job.  You also would know a lot more about the web site.  Parents, it's time for you to get involved and start attending Board meetings.  If you can't attend them all, get with your friends and take turns attending and sharing information. Teachers, you need to do the same thing.

I feel that I’ve gotten to know Suzy Stewart pretty well over the years that I’ve known her. I’ve found her to be someone that always has an opinion, (and is always more than willing to throw down with you if your opinion differs) and isn’t someone that you’d want focusing on you with her slightly unhinged obsession.

Bless her heart, (removed) but she really needs to give up her need to control things at FCHS. I can’t personally see what a parent that “Home Schooled” her children while also working a full time job knows about running a school…(removed) But I guess if your parent can’t have anyone else telling or even asking something of them for the betterment of the community without a temper tantrum…

For someone that is always saying things like “God told me….” , she doesn’t really seem like someone that listens to EVERYTHING God tells her, as I’d think we all would agree he’d more than likely ask her to be more of a good person than she most often isn’t. Someone in a previous post said it correctly “Get a Life” Suzy Stewart!
