Isn't it refreshing that Mr. Pettigrew is following his own advice and not slinging mud? It warms my heart to see the maturity that he is showing in how he is handling this unfortunate situation. It is so nice that he is not whining or blaming anyone else for this situation. It helps people respect him more to see what a strong person he is when faced with adversity-especially when politics can be so difficult at times.  I am so impressed with his ability to move on and focus on what he really needs to do right now, and that is to get enough support to get on the ballot. It is also refreshing and reassuring to know that this won't end up in a court battle that will cost the taxpayers a lot of money.  So much for caring about the people of this district. Hmmmmm.  

 All kidding aside, I hope Mr. Pettigrew can get on the ballot legally and run a clean campaign. There is nothing wrong with us having a choice. Lets's just hope we can elect leaders who don't whine or play the blame game.  Things are what they are at this point so people need to move on and do something positive. We don't need childish behavior in our leaders, we need leaders that can rise above the fray. We need leaders to be strong enough to handle this kind of adversity. Life isn't fair and life in politics really isn't fair. If one wants to play with the big boys, one needs to put their big boy pants on.

If Mitt wins the nomination, I will enthusiastically support his candidacy. For my friends who have hesitation on that score, I’d just ask you to keep four things in mind:

         1.. Justice Scalia just turned 78
         2.. Justice Kennedy will turn 78 later this year
         3.. Justice Breyer will be 76 in August
         4.. Justice Ginsburg turned 81 about a week ago.     

We wish them all well, of course, but the brute fact is that whoever we elect as president in November is almost certainly going to choose at least one and maybe more new members of the Supreme Court — in addition to hundreds of other life-tenured federal judges, all of whom will be making momentous decisions about our lives for decades to come.

If you don’t think it matters whether the guy making those calls is Mitt Romney or Barack Obama, I think you’re smokin’ something funky…

So for anybody who is thinking of not voting because your favorite didn’t get nominated, or writing in a candidate who can't win...

To the person who commented on the Girls State selection process. Get your facts straight before you start throwing out false information. I have also attended Girls State and it didn't take a family member to get me there. You have no idea what the American Legion does for this county, state, and country. The girls that are selected to represent Edgefield County are first picked from the teachers at the schools they attend. Then they go for an interview with several different  members from the American Legion. They choose who they ALL think will best represent Edgefield County. It is so sad to see how mean and cruel people are in this city and even country. Those women and men at the American Legion are wonderful people and you should take some time out of your day and thank them and not put them down.

It's no secret that the softball program at STHS is in shambles.  Without a very few athletes who play travel ball or take private lessons during the off season, you just don't have much of a talent pool.  Add in the fact that [removed] has run off most of what would have been the next group of talented players with a varsity coach who doesn't even attend his own players awards ceremony and you have a recipe for failure.  The school board has a golden opportunity at this moment to make the right decisions in regards to the future of both STHS's softball and baseball programs.  Hire [removed] for baseball and [removed] for softball and watch the Regional Championships come.  

I'm not sure what the writers comment about Reardon and Wardlaw meant exactly.  Reardon was named All State and received an athletic scholarship to play softball at Newberry.  I can promise you that her coaches were sending in her stats on a weekly basis.  However, in the end, the vast majority of college softball recruiting isn't done at the high school level, rather it's done during weekend travel tournaments.  Coaches know that's where the serious athletes can be found.

On the subject earlier about softball teams in the area as posted.  The point I was referring to was from what I saw in HSSR report following this season.  I know Mr. Brown has done a great job with his reports, but what I want to know is here is a opportunity for the local schools to promote their better athletes a chance for exposure for their hard work and success. While Mr. Brown does a great job telling the truth, where is the administration as A.D.  coach and booster members?  This is just one reason  STHS, Fox Creek programs are on the dumper. Football coaches coaching softball.  Would they want softball coaches coaching their football programs?  And why would Wardlaw not put out a few bucks to show Reardon that they would like to reward her for her hard work and dedication to the game and school. Nothing in HSSR. I guess they cannot pay for lack of funds. Pleeeesssseee!!!  They look like they have money for tons of new signs all inside and out of the school though and other programs. Wow what a way to send off a great athletic.  While other schools doctor the books for some who don't deserve recognition, others who do don't get any. And people are now seeing it.  Good luck folks in softball programs in CSRA area. Go to Augusta and Columbia area where they know what it takes. People step up for your girls, or just set back and complain!

Editor's post: For my birthday earlier this month I received a roll of "Obama" toilet paper. It was a joke gift, but times are hard in the Obama economy so I thought I would put it to good use. Much to my surprise the "Obama" toilet paper didn't work. All it did was, "spread the [you know what] around," and when I tried to flush it, it blocked the key[stone] pipeline and caused a back-up. I am one of the many who once were zoned in the " Dorn" district . We were rezoned into the Ashcroft [Ashcraft] district which makes no sense. We do not even know Ashcroft! Our neighbors across the road are still in district one. It makes no sense at all. Who ever decided this rezoning was a certified idiot for sure. What affects one home in a neighborhood affects them all. I resent our being isolated - a few houses in an area. I resent not being left on district one to be able to vote for William Smith, who we all out here do know, and to be able to help vote out Dorn so as to have a living brain in that seat on the council!

Editor's note: I agree that boundaries should be placed at the back side of properties and not the roads, however; the county council held months of meeting for public comment and got very little from anyone other than elected officials in the towns. Because Edgefield County had to secure two districts with "minority populations" to meet the US Justice Department approval, the lines had to be moved.

Your beef is with the Federal government, not the Edgefield County Council.

My niece made varsity cheerleader at Strom Thurmond and she keeps asking me to purchase a ad.  Is it true that it cost $700.00 to be on the squad if you don't sell an ad?  Is it true that the school does not even consider cheerleading a JV or varsity sport?

I was just wandering as I read the HSSR today, how do you have so many girls leading the stats in softball yet cannot win?  I know a lot of teams do not write in stats or support their girls who deserve to be honored for their hard work and success in the game. I guess the answer is the lack of support from a coach and A.D.  Case in point, Fox Creek with so many girls whose batting averages being so high, along with hits, HRs, stole bases, etc.  Who did they play and what was their record.  What in the world is going on?  Is the coaching that good or that bad.  With all of these great players then what is the problem.  Then there is Wardlaw Academy with Rearden who gets no exposure or support from the school. Parents must not be on Board or Booster Club.  Somebody needs to address this for people to understand.  No excuses or same old bla bla bla.  Parents who send their kids to other schools for playing time, think about it real hard. Go to play up not down. Or just play rec. ball. That way they can all get a trophy just for showing up.

How many signatures do they [candidates] have to get in order to get on the election?

Editor's note: Davis Parkman will have to get close to 800 (suggested to get over 1,000 to be safe) to have his name added to the ballot for Sheriff. William Smith will have to get nearly 170 (suggested 300 to be safe) and George Attaway needs about the same number. The suggested number is put forth because some people who may sign may not be "active voters" or may not even be registered to vote. In the council council seats it will also account for those who will be crossed off for being out of the district. If those removed from the petition takes the total below the magic number required, the candidate will have to give up the race or run as a write-in.

John Pettigrew may need up to 5,000 certified signatures to be placed on the ballot.

Edgefield County will never change.  It disturbs me to hear that several girls chosen to attend Girl's State are the granddaughters of the ladies on the selection committee.  I heard the interview process was a joke.  As an attendee of Girl's State many years ago, it was a lifetime experience.  I would like to apologize to the young ladies that didn't make it because your family member was not on the committee.  Hopefully the selection of young men for Boy's State is unbiased.

I keeping reading the editor notes talking about Mr. Parkman's "record" and being "removed from office" but I NEVER see anything but innuendos. Either tell us what it is or stop saying you know something that you know isn't true or else you would say so.

Editor's note: The comment you refer to was placed on June 9 (below) and was so worded because the poster raised the question about Parkman's record, which I correctly stated would be an issue in the campaign and that it will reported at that time. Right now, he is not a candidate until he certifies as a petition candidate. It was not reported sooner because it was obvious that he would be removed from the ballot before the primary was held (of which he would not appear without a the Republican challenger anyway).

I expect a report will be published sometime late July with the information that most voters are not aware of and should be informed.

I agree with the comment that if there is no county recreation at the northside park taxpayers don't need to be pouring money into it for nothing. My question is why was money ever spent there in the first place? I thought that before youi can start a building project a Perc Test was the first thing done before you could move forward. I couldn't build my house unless DHEC said I could have a septic tank. How did the county get to break the rules?

I have followed the discussion about water in the western part of the county for several years and I have attended every meeting that has been held to discuss the issue. I admit that I am not an expert on infrastructure or an engineer of any sort, but I do not see why everyone is looking to Edgefield County, the Water Authority, or McCormick County to supply the water needs in the areas.

The areas have bountiful natural water sources from spring fed creeks and Stevens Creek and from existing maps of water tables there are large aquifers in the area as well. Why doesn't the county look to private equity firms to invest in providing water. Start ups such as these seem to do very well.

On the other hand, if private business is uninterested that should be a firm indicator that any plan to provide county water is not feasible.

I take it the rest of the [county] council is on the same page since there didn't seem to be a vote mentioned in the article but it seemed obvious that [Chairman] Campbell, [Vice-chair] Blackwell and [Councilman] Ashcraft aren't afraid to stand up to [Councilman] Dorn. Was Mr.[Councilman] Bright at the meeting?

Editor's note: Councilman Bright was at the meeting and offered very little in the way of input until PARD funds were discussed, and then only to state that a park had to be active for a year to be eligible for funding. Councilman Bright did not give Councilman Dorn's motion for the 1.5 millage rate for the Northside "water project" a second allowing it to die without a vote. Bright is not running again and his seat will be taken by Tracey Freeman who is unopposed in the November elections.

Are there no standards that a county councilman or councilwoman needs to meet in order to remain in good standing on the council? With Councilman Dorn's behavior, misinformation, confrontational approach to dealing with items, his verbal exchanges with citizens, his lack of respect for his position and his fellow council members and his lack of respect for the chairman are just a few reasons to  think about suspending him or doing something to curtail this abuse of power. I am shocked that this continues to go on and that there is no recourse or discipline for this type of behavior. 

It is fine to point out all of his crazy behavior but to me there should be a certain decorum for the meetings. If a member of the council does not perform within certain guidelines they should be excused or disciplined in some way.  If the person cannot be permanently removed from office, maybe they could be dismissed for that particular meeting. Consequently he would miss most of the meetings and he would not be wasting everyone's time. Why is he allowed to continue to act in this manner? If this man wins again, then shame on his district. Are the voters really blinded by such an ignorant man? It is absolutely amazing to me that he continues to be elected. Absolutely amazing and very scary.

Editor's note: Chairman Dean Campbell can end Dorn's rants anytime he wants to do so. I do not understand why he lets him start on topic and then ramble on off topic for so long. He does try to contain Dorn, but a warning should be followed by a threat of removal from the meeting. If he ignores that, there is a Sheriff's Deputy present that will escort Dorn from the chambers.

Let me get this straight.  Dorn wants tax payer money for yet another "park" owned by a Church and not the County?  Is it true that  Edgefield County doesn't own the Bettis Academy facility? What type of lease do they have on Bettis Academy? Sure seems like a lot of money to invest into a complex where the lease can expire in the near future if that's the case.  In my opinion, we could have taken all the money that's been invested in Bettis (baseball fields) and put it into our facility here in Edgefield.  We could have developed a super complex that would draw children from all across the county to play.  Appears we need to do a better job of "thinking" these things out.

Re: Fox Creek. While both STHS and JET have excellent coaches in football and baseball, I can tell you that I know for a fact that several parents and players aren't happy with the status of STHS's softball program.  Neither [removed] at JET or the varsity coach at STHS seem to have a handle on the sport. The STHS softball team has several young ladies, that with the correct coaching could very well have a shot at having their college paid for.  I know several who have quit the sport over the way they were handled at JET.  And for those of you who plan on replying to these statements, be sure to throw in JET and STHS's win/loss records for softball over the past two seasons. On a side note, I would love to see either team play Wardlaw in the sport.  When your 2A public school can't beat a school with 40 girls 8th - 12th grade, you may need to reconsider your direction.  If you wanna keep those athletes playing at STHS, hire Ron Conley and build a Championship team.

RE: Office Jobs and Dock Jobs.

Please stop living in the past, not every college graduate gets a big salary and a company car.  As a recruiter for "office job" people I look for people who have busted their butts in the past and want to do better.  Too educated to work on a dock?  Too smart to flip hamburgers?  Too cute to do yardwork?  I've done all of them, and thrown hay bales, formed concrete and worked on cars.  We learn not only from school but life lessons and it makes us smarter and stronger.

By working on the dock you know how long it takes to load a truck, and what kind of loads you can mix together, and how to do it smarter/quicker/cheaper.  You can't learn that in a book. Who do you think will advance quicker, someone who read a book or someone who has done it? People who read resume`s all day long can tell if you are a worker, or a leaner.  I don't hire leaners.

In todays work environment anyone who turns down any kind of paying job is just silly.  You can either sit on your duff and collect a small check for doing nothing, or you can make something happen, and be a meaningfull part of society.

Dorn owes his constituents an apology.  Instead of working to represent them he has used his time to campaign yet again.  Instead of accepting his responsibility for failing to serve them he throws out the race card which is more than inappropriate it is downright false.  He has failed in more ways than one and when confronted with the truth he calls names.  Obama must be proud of this demoncrat who blames everyone else for his failure.  While he fills the audience with those who cannot think for themselves and who believe that he is standing up for them they and he fail to realize he has wasted years with incompetent rantings and accomplishing nothing for any of the citizens.  Rather than give his people the wrong and incomplete information, he should have been helping them to find ways to get things done.  If you want the full and truthful story look at the real records.  Dorn once again proved to be a true demoncrat, expecting the government to take care of all his wants and desires.  Dorn seems to be the only one who believes taxes paid by citizens should be given for any whim he desires.  Dorn is the true one who believes the money belongs to him.  The race card has been played so many times it is like the little boy who cried wolf.  Wise up Dorn and  followers, reality is setting in and if you want things to change you need to begin with Dorn.

I am really shocked at the number of students who are leaving North Augusta High School to attend Fox Creek Charter School. Evidently these parents are more concerned about their children being able to play sports at this 1A charter school than getting a education. North Augusta and Storm Thurmond are ACCREDITED high schools while Fox Creek is NOT ACCREDITED. If your child is not good enough to play sports at North Augusta or Strom Thurmond then they will not be getting an athletic scholarship at Foxcreek. The SAT scores for last year shows Strom Thurmond leading the way with a score of 1508. North Augusta followed with a score of 1438 and Foxcreek was at 1417. Parents wake up and remember that your childs education is the most important thing. If you think that Foxcreek is that good is sports, tell them to put North Augusta or Strom Thurmond on next years Football schedule and see what happens.

It was very nice of you to come to your relative's graduation.  I hope they appreciate it and will make you, your family, and most importantly themselves proud.
 
But I was there also.  I saw nothing wrong with the speech made.
 
The speaker, in this case, I believe the top graduate in the class, worked her way up to the honor, with hard work and dedication. I believe she earned has the right to make the speech, to address her fellow graduates and attendees, in a manner she believed appropriate. 
 
IMHO There was nothing inappropriate.
 
If her comments convinced JUST one student go on their way to achieve the way she has, and I believe will, then this would success beyond measure.
 
Maybe that one, will be your relative that graduated.

I drove 7 hours to make sure I was there for my niece's graduation on 1 June 2012.  To hear one of the featured speakers politicize the event with right wing speaking points was #1 disrespectful to fellow graduates & their families...who do not aspire to her political views; and #2 a cheapening of the event.  Yes it may have been 'your' moment.  Live long enough and you will find...it ain't all about you.

Editoer's note: Would you be writing if the speaker had issued "left-wing" ideals? I saw nothing "political" in anyone's speech.

No, with people like you, it will always be about race.  Not only are you stuck in the past, but you're also stuck on stupid.

Had an interesting conversation the other day with a person the opposite race.  Told them I couldn't put my finger on when the race issue becomes a race issue.  Go to the schools, and in elementary, you see children of all races interacting, playing, working on projects, etc.  Go to the middle school and you see the same.  Went to have lunch at STHS and saw the various races interacting with each other and showed no such issues.  So I asked, when does it begin to be an issue?

The answer I got - it's only and issues because it's an excuse used by the older generations.  Interesting, the answer came from a black man.  Guess since his answer wouldn't fit the template he'd be called an Uncle Tom.

And did you know that blacks in leadership positions are now being trained to raise the issue of race if their leadership/competence is ever challenged?  Makes you wonder.

With the summer upon us I found myself awake late into the night last night and I heard the Alarm (Siren) sound off in Johnston several times. I specifically remember the Alarms being different from what I had heard early that evening when they sounded off. I know that there are different alarms that alert people to different events. Could you explain the different alarms that we may hear?

Editor's note: If the Johnston Fire Department is "toned out" the siren will wail. I know of no different patterns in the siren once it it is activated.

Race is still an issue in this country. Not being from the south, I don't know about dock jobs versus office jobs. I do know that we have personally experienced affirmative action in our job experiences. We have lost out on a jobs that were given to those of other races strictly because they were another race and not because they were more qualified for the jobs. They had less qualifications than our family members, but there was a quota to be filled. The race thing goes both ways. I am really sick of the attitude that some have had it so much worse. We have all had bad experiences with race issues so we need to move beyond our personal experiences and look at what is happening in this country.

The freedoms that are being taken away by this administration are our fundamental freedoms. For those of you who do not see that , I feel sorry for you. Many think that because we have a black President, that is all that matters. His race (remember he is half white) is only important to him when he can use it for his political advantage. He doesn't care about the black community in this country or he would be doing things to really improve their lives. He just wants the black vote.  Giving people more promises and more hand outs is only putting them into more bondage to the government. The more bondage someone is in, the less freedom they have. I would think the black community would understand bondage better than anyone else.

"A 14-year-old Aiken boy was jailed at the Department of Juvenile Justice Wednesday on allegations he stole a running van from Northside Bait and Tackle and then abandoned a dog on the side of the road that had been in the vehicle."

He HAD to throw the dog out.  There wasn't room in that vehicle for the road AND the dog! At least he abandoned them both.  I wonder which side of the road it was?  Would the left side fit in the vehicle better than the right, or vice versa? How do you put a side of the road in a vehicle? How long does it take to unload a side of the road?  Inquiring minds want to know.

(4)  Only in America can we have terrorists kill people in the name of Allah and have the media primarily react by fretting that some people might be harmed by the backlash.

(5)  Only in America would we make people who want to legally become American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege while we discuss letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just become American citizens.

(6)  Only in America could the people who believe in balancing the budget and sticking by the country's Constitution be thought of as "extremists."

(7)  Only in America could you need to present a driver's license to cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote.

(8)  Only in America could people demand the government investigate whether oil companies are gouging the public because the price of gas went up when the return on equity invested in a major U. S. oil company ( Marathon Oil ) is less than one half (1/2) of a company making tennis shoes ( Nike ), which manufacturers it’s products overseas.

(9)  Only in America could the government collect more tax dollars from the people than any nation in recorded history, still spend a trillion dollars more than it has per year, for a total spending of $7 million PER MINUTE , yet complain that it doesn't have nearly enough money.

(10) Only in America could the rich people who pay eighty six (86) percent of all income taxes be accused of not paying their "fair share" by people who don’t pay any income taxes at all.
