Editor's post: Just when you think you have heard of everything, somebody goes and proves you wrong. While Sean's family is spending a 24/7 vigil and at times sleeping, or trying to sleep, in the common area for those in the MCG Trauma ICU, a guy came in and tried to rob them while they slept. Not once, but twice, by the same guy! Why twice? Because those wonderful rent-a-cops did not call the Sheriff's Offcie and have this guy arrested. They just escorted him out one door and he went around to another door and came back. This, of course, is after he was run off from University Hospital for doing the same thing. They (MCG "Security") notified those in the provided area the man may be back. Unbelievable....

In Edgefield County this guy would have been in jail the first time. I would dare say he would be held on a rather large bond, if even allowed bond. What a total worthless piece of trash this guy is. How cold do you have to be to prey on the family members of those fighting for their very life?

Secondly, the number of reports today are fewer than usual. I attended a dinner that honored my wife and some of her co-workers over the last 20 years. She, and my family, give up so much in order for me to be able to bring you EdgefieldDaily.com six days a week - wild horses would not be able to drag me away from the event. Thank you for understanding.

We really enjoy the Edgefield Daily!  The news is concise and out rates the other local county papers. Thanks for the good job you did covering Lynn McCord Byars’ accident.  That was such a tragedy and one we will never forget!

Editor's note: Thank you for your kind comments. Lynn's death was very difficult to cover due to our life-long friendship. She is dearly loved and sorely missed.

The people in Edgefield County really need to get involved in the next few days and contact the school board regarding the supt's position. There are three finalists, but there is only one name on that list that belongs in the position of Supt. of Edgefield County. Two of the finalists are people who know NOTHING at all about our school district or the people of Edgefield County.  Dr. David Mathis, however, has dedicated most of his adult life striving to make this school district the best it can be. I'm sure there are people who do not support him. However, those of us who know Dr. Mathis and those who have worked with him, know the type man and administrator he is. We could search the world over and not find a more dedicated and suitable candidate for the job. Go back and look at test scores when Dr. Mathis was Asst. Supt.  Under the leadership of Dr. Keesley and Dr. Mathis, this district reached new heights. Look at  the SAT scores at STHS this year. Most of these children were reared in Edgefield and educated in our schools since elementary school. During most of those years, our district was under the leadership of Keesley and Mathis.  I could go on and on about his credentials and worthiness. However, unless parents, educators, and all others in this community get behind Dr. Mathis and show our support  ( by bombarding the school board with phone calls, emails, and letters), then I'm afraid Dr. Mathis will be heading back to Aiken to become their Supt. Then, Aiken will be the district soaring above the rest...not Edgefield. This school board let Dr. Mathis get away without a fight several years ago. In my opinion, they need to fight now to get him back. We need him...the children of Edgefield County need him.  Please let your board members know how you feel.

Editor's note: The finalists are: Dr. Mary Rice-Crenshaw - Clarendon 3 School District: (Turbeville, SC), Dr. Angelia Fryer - Winston Salem / Forsyth County (NC) Schools (two articles: Superintendent finalists quizzed at forums and Finalists visit school district), and Dr. David Mathis - Aiken County School District.

Take a wild guess who will be on the outside looking in on this one? Get real... if the school board will hire Myrtis Brightharp as "qualified" and a James Bibbs' crony, pick the least qualified applicant (an Edgefield County political mainstay) and you can guess the "best" person for the job. The associated articles are reader submitted information.

I read the story on the Magistrate's office closing for the training on the new computers or what ever. Are all county offices closing to train too? I guess there's no since in going to the courthouse at all until after 1:00 huh?

Editor's note: To my knowledge the Clerk of Court and other court related offices will remain open during the training period. If other offices contact me with closings they will be listed on the Headlines page.

To respond to the person inquiring "what happened" to ST during the NA game: To say the wheels came off the bus would be an under statement.  I believe the engine, axles, and transmission came off.  ST has the potential to be one of the best teams in the state, and they proved that by beating Gaffney(defending D-1 4A state champs) in a scrimmage earlier this yr. It was a mental collapse(kinda like the ones we acquire against S Aiken yr in yr out).  7 fumbles, multiple dropped passes, penalties, taking a knee trying to field a snap for a punt(TWICE), etc.  I look for ST to be much improved Friday night against Batesburg/Leesville and hopefully we come to play 4 quarters, to the level we are capable of.  The road will not be easy for ST with our brutal out of conference schedule and the low state 3A being so competitive this year.  Marlboro Cnty, Myrtle Beach, Timberland(defending runner up), and Wilson are all "loaded" this year and our road to Willy B's will have to go through those teams come playoff time.  We can do it, but our boys have got to get it together.  Get out and support the Rebels Friday night, b/c i promise you, Batesburg is bringing
a crowd!

Prior to 9/11 there is evidence that Al Qaida operatives legally bought American Airlines and United Airline Stocks "short."  (Shorting is a legal and common Wall Street practice wherein an investor buys a stock betting it will go down, earning more profit the lower the stock goes.)  The terrorists knew their attack would drive the airline stocks down, earning them a handsome profit on their dastardly deeds.  In 2001 there were cries to end the shorting option, but nothing has happened.  Years have passed and now the US must borrow money from Arab Oil states and Communist China to stay in operation.  We have many enemies in the world.  Why do we still allow every potential enemy and greedy businessman on earth to continue to have the means to manipulate our market to punish American compettion?  Competitor nations allow our money to be invested in their corporations but NOT SHORT!  Isn't it time to end this suicidally counterproductive practice?  Why should we allow foreigners an advantage over our businesses?  Make it a point to ask every politician running for any office to weigh in on this issue.  Shorting needs to be exposed and eliminated before it is used as a weapon of war against us.

To the person fussing about boys at Fox Creek on the sideline and not getting to play , I blame the PARENTS for that ! They should have them at a REAL school if they want to play Football , ST's coach plays everybody through a game . And for there always being one certain kid on your field , don't worry he wont be a sport star from Fox Creek , probably end up just being a Sanitation Engineer !

To the person questioning about after-school programs in Edgefield, Johnston.  My children go to school in Aiken County and they have a great after-school program.  It is put on in Aiken by the QuestZone (operated by the Sunshine House).  I would call the Sunshine House in Aiken and ask for the director of the QuestZone.  It is a really great program, two teachers from each grade stay behind in the afternoons to help the kids with their homework, they have play time and snack time.  It is also not to costly.  They run on the same system as the school (if you qualify for reduced or free lunch your fee is less).  I would check into this and see if it would be possible, I am sure you could get many parents on board to see if there was a need.  Hope this helps!

I was under the impression that all Child Development students were to begin school on Wednesday, the 22nd (those children, too, have to attend school a certain number of days).  Why then, did some of the CD classes in the county begin on Monday, the 27th, instead?

Our school board has serious problems that have been demonstrated many times recently.   That's the school board. The school system and teachers are another story.  I have three grown children that attended  the Edgefield County school system, they all received great educations from hardworking caring teachers.  I now have 4 grandchildren that attend W.E. Parker Elementary.  I pick up the children at school periodically and everytime I do; I thank God for the wonderful caring teachers we have.  Sit outside and watch the teachers make sure our children are picked up safely from school.  Watch the children get dropped off in the mornings and see the care our principal gives.  Gaye Holmes thank you!  Dianne Murrell thank you for your years at Parker and the difference you've made in so many children's lives.   We have Dr. Sharon Keesley and the wonderful teachers in our school system to attribute the outstanding SAT scores our graduating seniors are making.  Thank you all . There are parents and grandparents in the county that realize the great teachers and principals we have in our school system and are truly thankful for them and ask God blessings on them for the service they do for our children.  You don't hear it much but you really are appreciated.

Awesome job STHS!  You beat the Nation... in academic achievement!!! And people think STHS is all about football.  Think again... They are educating our students to be competitive in the big game of life.  I applaud the teachers, counselors, administration and staff at STHS, parents, and the students for taking advantage of all the opportunities for learning.  BRAVO!!!
web posted August 30, 2007

I applaud the latest results for SAT scores for the class of 07 at STHS. However, one statistic (a numerical value that describes some characteristic about a sample as opposed to a population) has not been released to the general public. That number would be "n" the sample size. No one has released how many actual SAT scores were used to find this average. If it was 100 or so students, then it would be very significant. If the number of scores used is between 10-25, then the significance would not be that great. If someone is limiting the number of students who take the SAT, then data is being manipulated for financial gains such as SAT Improvement money from the SC DOE.

I must say, I do not understand why the coaches of FCHS do not let more of its football players on the field.  Week after week these boys practice in this heat and give all they can, and all they ever get back is to stand on the side line and watch the same little group play ball.  This appears that the coaches do not have any confidence in them, regardless of what they say.  These boys need game time.   It would build their confidence and the coaches might find they have some really good players they are not using.  You can bet the (School Board Chair) Bishop's son is on the field.  Also, it is not like the ones they have on the field are all that great, I haven't seen them win a game to date.  Gives the other players a chance and build their "MORAL".  A win  just might be in the future.
Oh, and don't get me started on those cheap little cheerleaders outfits.

Editor's note: You may be just a little hard on the coach, I think Fox Creek has won one game in the last three years.

I ate lunch today at (a restaurant), the building is nicely decorated and a great little place for lunch, if you have two hours or so.  The service is terrible the two times I have been in there, I can't  understand why.  I have waited tables before in a much larger setting and a much larger menu selection, it's not that hard.  Making sandwiches and pouring soup in styrofoam bowls can't be that hard.  I had to ask for drink refills, napkins and get up and tell the lady who was in the back the whole time, that I was ready to pay.  Get it together!
web posted August 29, 2007

Why are there not anymore after-school programs at WE Parker or any other school in the area? Other local schools have an after-school program like Merriweather has – Prodigy – parents pay weekly for this………which would be ok for those of us who need it. There are teachers actually helping students with their homework and they have other activities as well.

We need something like this desperately in Edgefield.

Commenting about the  Miss Teen show  on TV - Go to any Mall, you will see young girls dressed like little sluts and guess what ? A lot of the time their Mothers are there with them. We wonder why there are so many sex crimes . I even saw a young teen going in a Church with her Mother and Father beside her.She had on skirt so short that it was barely there and a halter top. Is that not sad? You can say what you want to but the way a woman dresses  does cause crime. Maybe he can't get to you but you put the idea in his head and some other unsuspecting woman or girl will pay for your stupidly. Parents wake up and police your children. Teach them modesty and some respect for themselves.Where in the world are your brains?????

I hate that Dr. Roberson feels that he needs to leave Edgefield County. I think he was doing a great job. I think he sees that he may get caught up in the antics of the school board sooner or later and decided to get out now. Trust me the Cooks / Bibbs team will eventually turn on him in some way in order the have their way. I hope the people of Edgefield will not give them their vote when they are up for re-election. I know I will not cast my vote their way even though I did the first time. What a lesson learned.

Why is there a car from the (North Augusta) Planning Dept out in front of the county admin building just about every day?

Editor's note: They are planning the best way to swallow up Merriwether and hand it to the City of North Augusta on a silver platter. That way the county will get the same huge tax payments and North Augusta can impose a huge tax increase on Merriwether residents to fund their development on the river. Think of it as the county whoring out your red-headed step child. I could relate it to child porn, but that would not be suitable for publication.

Editor's post: It looks like "politics as usual" in the Dist. 25 Republican Senate race in Edgefield County. I'm not going to name names, right now, but here is what I have observed in the last two weeks. One candidate's supporters are going around placing his signs in front, beside, and behind each of what I can only assume they feel is the front-runner's signs. How juvenile.  Another candidate places his signs out on the roadway and his all of his opponents' signs suddenly disappear. Someone is also riding around and running over a certain candidate's smaller signs.

I have seen this before and it is so stupid. If I see it taking place I will take video and photos, report them, and hopefully see them arrested. If you see it happen, please get a tag number and a vehicle and person description and report it to the Sheriff's Office at 803-278-1625 or 803-637-5337 - day or night.

What ever happened to a budget? Does anyone know what that is anymore? It means that you don't spend what you don't have and you try to save a little of what you do have for a rainy day that will come. Pumping more money into the school system is not the answer. That is like poring water into a drain pipe.We need to use what we have wisely and hold people accountable for how it is spent. We need to go back to teaching our children manners and discipline and that you go to school to learn and that is the only reason. We also need to get rid of teachers that are not doing the job. Everyone including the teachers know that we have some that are not interested in teaching, only biding their time until retirement. Boot them out.  And no child needs to be moved up a grade unless they have earned that right. There are many things so wrong about our system. Enough money is not one of them.

FCHS coach strikes again !!  Since there is no gym, there is no win.  How much is that place spending on coaches?  Is there any public infomation about that?  I feel sorry for the players.  Their talent is being wasted by a wanna be coach.

Editor's note: There will be no gym, no new school, only a mound of lies until the day they are forced to close due to bankruptcy - leaving the taxpayer to pick up the tab for the ignorance of the FCCHS BOD.

Nope, teachers don't work an 8 hour day - why not?    Because they do not get a lunch break, (esp. in elem. school ) like the rest of the work world. Eating while trying to teach manners and discipline is no lunch break.  Go eat with your child and watch.

I am a teacher in Edgefield County. My work day is 8 hours--at school. Generally, there are several hours of work at home on schoolwork in the evening. Most summers I take classes and spend much of July preparing for the new school year. I am not complaining--I chose this--but the poster who thinks we work short days and have the whole summer off has never walked in our shoes. We are teachers, mothers/fathers, social workers, and policemen at different times. We also have a great deal of reports, especially at the beginning of the year. If you think this job is easy, become a teacher!

I want to know which of the candidates for the Senate seat are the biggest supporters of law enforcement and the prison system.  I feel that we are wasting time by spending all of our funding on education.  This system was destroyed when they took prayer out of schools and stopped spanking children for misbehaving in class.  With this being said, most of our children will eventually end up in prison because they don't know right from wrong.  I am sure that many have forgotten the time that the inmate escaped from the prison in McCormick and went into Lincolnton, Ga., where he murdered innocent individuals.  The prison system was not understaffed so much then as it is now.  Someone needs to take a look at this and do something about it.

Editor's note: Support for law enforcement starts with the County Council.

I just want to respond to the individual who made the comment that most teachers don't work a full eight-hour day.  Let's take yesterday (Friday) for an example.  I was at school by 7:15 to make sure that everything was lined up for the day.  After teaching four classes (and I mean teaching, not sitting behind the desk) I met with my peers to discuss students and instruction while eating my lunch.  Then, I worked with a service-learning student from the high school for two class periods.  During part of that time, I taught another class.  After school, I did lesson plans for next week, cleaned my boards, straightened up the rest of my room, and stayed with two students whose parent could not be there to pick them up until after 4:30.  When I got home, I prepared supper for my family and spent the next three hours reviewing PACT scores from the previous years and filling out charts for each class so that I would know the students' levels, and I talked to a few parents on the phone.  Then, I filled out my calendar so that I would remember what I have to do next week.  I still have some papers to grade,  but I'll get to them on Saturday or Sunday.  Please understand that I am not whining.  I love my job, and the reader is right.  Most teachers don't work eight-hour days.  They work more.

Editor's note: I have family members who are dedicated teachers. They work well into the night during the school year correcting papers and planning their days.

Should Edgefield Construction be allowed to  bid on projects in the town of Edgefield ? Is this not a conflict of interest ? How can they get away with quotas in the hiring system in Edgefield schools ? What can we do about it ? I am very sad to hear about Lynn McCord. I hadn't seen her since high school, but always liked her very much. Life can be so fragile.

Editor's note: 1) As long as Mayor Durham does not vote or lead discussions on the matter it is legal. 2) Anything is legal until it is challenged in a court of law. 3) Elect new school board members. 4) Lynn will be sorely missed.

Of course the cameras' view points were breasts and behinds as they would grind like a hooker.

To the prejudiced white conservative(his words not mine). Most blacks, like most whites have a mind of their own, so hopefully if Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton told them to vote this way, they would have just as much sense as those white independents, and republicans, and vote what's best for their constiuents. Give black leaders some credit. I'd like for you to say where you think we are going with this type of leadership.

For the record, this year when you pay your property taxes school funding has been removed. Every residential homeowner should see at least a 50% drop in your residential property taxes. The 1 cent increase in the sales tax will supposedly make up the difference in removing millage for school operations.
There should still be millage for long term school bonds, etc. However for businesses and rental property
(taxed at 6%), millage for school funding will still be included in your property tax bills.

Just a quick comment about school fund raisers an "Let the kids sell Wal-Mart gift cards".  When you go to Thurmond football game look at the program and see who paid for the ads, local merchants.  Not Wal-Mart.  Go to a little league game and look who sponsors the teams, local merchants. Not Wal-Mart. When the local volunteer fire department needs raffle items for their annual fund raisers, who gives them?  You guessed it, local merchants.  Too many times we hear "I looked all over Augusta for this and you have it here" or "I paid a lot more for this in Augusta". If local people don't give local merchants a chance, we will not be here for long.  Thank you, A Local Merchant

To the self centered, ignorant people who complain about paying taxes for education when you have no children in the school system, I have some food for thought.Education is the most fundamental thing our country and citizens need in order to succeed. Education is not just for your children but for your community. What kind of community do you think you would live in if taxes did not fund education? You may not have any children but the children your taxes are paying to educate will be making decisions for you and running this community when you are old! Now, having said that, would you like the future leaders to be educated well or would you like them to be educated only as much as their parents can afford? Quit complaining, education benefits us all in some way or another. You can always rent and then you wouldn't have to worry about paying as much taxes. I am sure there are other things your tax money pays for that you don't use. What kind of town or county would you live
 in if
everyone had your since of "giving" to the community? P.S. ever heard of proof reading? Reading your post only made me realize that I do not pay enough taxes for education.

I have a solution to the Massachusetts teacher qualification problem, which is not isolated to Massachusetts.

Close the educational system in the US as we now know it

Our teachers can not discipline the students.
Our teachers can not teach or try to instill morals associated with Christianity
Our teachers can not enforce completion of assigned homework.
Our teacher’s hands are tied so they can not effectively teach the fundamentals of
education.

They can however:   collect fees etc.   tolerate disrespect from parents and students. Prepare students to become door to door sales reps.   Insure that all “records” are in order for athletes to maintain “eligibility “ status.  And provide a place for young people to congregate on a daily basis , if they so desire.

Several years ago our political system went into a tail spinning nose dive.  The inevitable
results are now becoming overwhelming.

To be an educator is a noble calling.  For educators to be controlled by political activists
and athletic extremists is downright disgraceful.

Where are our priorities??

The post about sale tax for the schools are right on the money! We too have no children in the school system but our property tax money goes to it. No it's not right to pay for someone elses child but we tax payers do, it's all about the no child left behind.
I would love to know how many students in public school parents own property in Edgefield County.
Many people in this county have children that we the tax payers are paying for in one way or the other.
It would be a better world if people would take care of their own life and not be waiting for a hand out but, that would take a act of God, not goverment at any level. Oh i forgot we the people are the goverment, right. Get out and vote! Make your voice heard.
I know for a fact that if we had a flood I won't be on the top of my house waiting for the goverment to come and get me,

Okay, I will be serious. I am concerned about his "constituent service".  Sage Valley's Weldon Wyatt, Bettis Rainsford, and local realtors are hosting a fund raiser for Hixon. That's all well and good. I too would want their support if I were running for public office. I just wouldn't stop there. I would be seeking others (poor and middle class) for their support. I would at least act like I wanted everyone else's support. His campaign looks more like Dick Cheney and Halliburton (http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0403-10.htm) to me. If you take an honest look, I am sure you will see the same.

Chris Corley is a nice guy with a bright future. He's stuffed envelopes for three months with Gresham Barrett and some of you think he's ready to represent us in the Senate. Get real! I am not opposed to youthful
leadership as long as it bears some relevant lifetime experience. He unfortunately lacks this experience.  He is running to get his name out there for future elections. Good luck in those future elections, but you are
not ready. Listen voters, how can a college student, with a young family, bear the responsibility of leading this district with no experience on $10,000 a year? You will be doing him and this district a great disservice.

Shane Massey has a great appeal to all socio-economic classes and has proven himself on the battlefield of life. My husband and I have three children and all have been out of school for years, yet a big portion of our tax bill is for the school system. If you have worked hard all your life to own something then you are penalized for it by having to pay for everyone else. We have an education lottery. What a joke! Just type in " how does a state lottery operate" on the web and have your eyes opened. We have money pumped into the system by the state and the federal level and money generated by property taxes. Yet, America is way down the list compared with other countries in Education.Something is rotten in Denmark! . A sales tax is the only fair way to fund education and health care and should be collected and used only for schools and for health care, not designated for any other purpose. No one should have to pay a school fee nor a teacher have to buy supplies.

Recreation is only one issue that needs to be carefully questioned regarding the budget.   Current council members Hudson and Kitchens need to be more pro-active in getting funds to provide parks and recreational facilities for the citizens in their districts especially with the largest population located there.

Bettis Park for too long has received the majority of the funds.  Who are these salaried persons?  The total cost for salaries plus other associated expenses equal $93,274.    Bettis Park budget totals $70,913 as well as an additional $3,500 for development.  How much of the remaining programs football etc. is going to Bettis Park as well?  The "mobile" concession stand that was approved and was stated could be moved to other facilities is now stationary.  What is the actual figures of utilization by the citizens for this park.

If Hudson and Kitchens do not have the "power" to question these issues maybe the two potential replacement candidates will.  It is time to move this county forward.  Oh I forgot, part of these districts may be in the hands of North Augusta through annexation anyway so maybe this is not a concern for our leaders.  Business as usual sure stinks.

As I watched the TV highlight films from camps around the CSRA, I did not see one case where the practice was taking place in a gym.   Guess he will be able to use the "no gym" excuse for a few more years.  And by the way, no football player gets into shape in two or three weeks.   Most coaches have expectations that their players arrive in pretty good shape when fall practice starts.  Oh well, that takes leadership and maybe less chewing tobacco on the practice field!!

As soon as I read about the recreation budget I flew hot... I have been trying and trying to find out about this budget and this may be more than the wondering minds section can hold, but it all needs to be said....Recreation is the only thing we have in this county for our kids! There is and has been questioning about this budget.... should it be cut or the mil. tax cut out....NO it should not, but it being questioned yes, for years! When I began questioning it I was sent in a circle, each person I spoke with said I needed to speak with a different person... I spoke with the County Administrator whom spoke to the Rec. Director, (while I was sitting there), I've spoken with the Mayor whom was willing to help through the town, if I could get the counties help, I sent an e-mail to Councilman Kitchens and got no response, and the President of the Board was also spoken to about the budget! Out of all these people not one of them had an answer as to where is all this money going to or why hasn't it been spent on certain things or why did the girls softball have nothing! There are no concessions, no port-o-let, we had to use the gym bathroom facilities, there are no score boards or storage buildings for equipment, and until the end of the '06-'07 season there was only one safe playable field that 4 +/- teams had to share. In the County Council meetings minutes recorded on January 3, 06 it states that the Mobile concessions trailer bid was accepted at $ 47,404, ok note the word mobile, when I requested this for softball everyone I spoke with stated they thought it was being used at Bettis park, well it is parked in front of a concrete building that can be used for their concessions! If anyone has looked at the budget the softball is at the bottom of the budget only receiving $ 3225.00 for 2007-2008! As was said, Bettis park was poured the money, and the softball league was given nothing but a few pieces of new equipment this past year, after 3 years of complaining the field was finally fixed, which the town did & we thank them! In which the town requested $1500.00 from the council to do this. But Bettis park has $8000.00 for landscaping!?  It has been proposed by several people to raise money in order to have concessions (which in turn make money for that league) but if there is a $47,000 mobile unit why can't it be used? There is well over $10,000 of miscellaneous expenses in the recreation budget, where is it going?  More than $11,000 in machine & equipment repairs? what equipment? are we paying for the towns equipment? Then there's the maintenance expense for the fields which the town does and pays for this maintenance, so who gets that maintenance money from the budget? the town? No!  Not to mention the uniforms and clothing expense, which we were all told our registration fees go towards paying for those, so who are we clothing in each league and where does the registration fee really go? Coaches volunteer, Umpires used to get paid cash through concessions sales and now the county pays them, so who holds the money from concessions for each league like, Dixie youth, no one seems to know and concessions do make a lot! So where is all this money going? Sure I've taken into account you have to restock but the rest is 100% profit. Now take into account all the people I said I've spoken with! Questions have been asked, but no answers could be given! Also throughout my questioning I found out there was additional money that (names removed) have for girls softball, $20,000 in rec. league budget plus a check was issued as a donation through United Way of a couple thousand dollars, written to them, yet to be seen or used??? With a 3% mil. tax why isn't there more money in the rec. budget and is it all being put in the recreation budget? Plus the town budget is seperate from the county budget! Sounds to me like the IRS needs to come in and find out where all this money is with detailed receipts/documentation because if all the people I spoke with don't have a clue, there is a definite problem. I had to do a lot of research to find out, no one knows anything and no one could get anything done! Maybe someone else has the answers!? I'vedone all I can do just being a citizen of Edgefield. Thank you Edgefield Daily I love what you do!

Editor's note: Here is a copy of the budget
for recreation as provided by the county. It has been posted several times.

This is in response to the person who wrote about 'habits'.  You may be in the habit of handing over $25 here, there, or anywhere without caring what it is being used for, but my husband and I like to know what our money is being used for.  My husband and I do not drink beer, smoke cigarettes, cand certainly do not purchase drugs with our money.  When we buy spend money on something other than bills, we like to see what we're getting for our money.  When we give to a charity, we like to have a solid idea of how the money is being used to help the charity, to make sure it isn't going to the padded pockets of administration, but to the front lines where it is needed.  I have had an opportunity to visit the elementary school recently.  I am having a difficult time seeing how the money is making it to the classrooms.  I know of teachers that are scrounging around to find items to use in their rooms for storage, I know teachers that are pulling money out of their pockets (you're right, no one asked them to, but no one else will do it either) to provide the calculators.  I complained about  the school supply list, not because we can't afford it, or don't want to, but because there are people who won't provide for their own children, so we have to make up the difference.  Also, because (and I can't wait until the next board election!) our school board has set up our teachers to bear the brunt of the criticism for the expenses related to a 'public' school system.  The teachers are the ones seen and complained to every day during the school year, they are also some of the lowest paid school employees.  The school board members are not on site each day to hear our complaints, some of them have yet to return phone calls, they are not readily available to see first hand the struggles the teachers have to make to allow the children to experience an enjoyable learning environment.  I wonder how much salary any of the board members would be willing to sacrafice in order to offset the amount of 'fees' income that is not paid each year by the families that 'qualify' for the poverty exemption.

If I got paid what the board members get paid, for the amount of work they do, in addition to my 'normal' job,and knowing what the teachers are having to deal with I would be ashamed.

This accident, while tragic, is one in a long list of accidents that have occurd in that particular area. The curve there is not really a nasty one but the way some people drive through there is crazy. I travel that stretch of road everyday to and from work and I can tell you it dosen't matter if it's morning, afternoon, or the middle of the night. I have seen semis passing 2 and 3 cars at extreme speeds, and cars passing 2 and 3 semis at a time endangering the lives of those in oncoming traffic as well as there own. I have seen many a car have to swerve off to the shoulder to avoid collision as I myself have had to do numerous times in this same area.

The Highway Patrol and ECSO do a decent job of patroling the area, I know I see them several times a night, but as we all know officers are in short demand around here.

PLEASE! if you don't care about your own safety when behind the wheel then care about the safety of your family, friends, neighbors, me & my children, and EVERYBODY else on the road!

Let try this from another view maybe we can get an answer. Are the schools individually required to keep an end of fiscal year finical report? Keeping track of all monies received and how it the money is spent.

Is this available to the public?  If so how do we get it? It is a fact that no one will state on the record what the registration fee go towards, and this is why it is under scrutiny. Even if you don’t have a child in the school system and you pay property tax you are paying for the schools.

We all have a right to know how the money is being spent in the schools. With such high quality members on our school board you might guess why I question such a thing.

Dr. Rex said the state does not get involved with local elected officials and that the voters are responsible for handling ineffective board members. It is apparent many Edgefield county voters are dissatisfied with these two individuals and there may be legal recourse to get rid of them. A good lawyer could respond to this concern and provide information for possible legal action. The good voters of Edgefield county DO NOT want Professor Bibbs, Sister Sallie and their NAACP agenda ruining our school system anymore.

Editor's note: The school board is elected. The only way to unseat any elected official is to vote them out of office.

To the person who posted that "the teachers are not asked to spend their own money" and that "they are not working for free".  You are 100% correct.  What makes this a bigger shame is that thay are willing to do anything above and beyond for the education of our children and certain parents are not.  They may not be working for free,  but as far as I'm concerned, they, along with our law enforcement, are the most underpaid and unappreciated people around.  They deserve much more than they receive.

With the responsibility of having chidren comes expenses. Nothing in life is free. Instead of complaining about the fees and school supplies ( I would think that most parents would understand you ould need supplies to attend school) you should look at how maoney could have been saved from other things the districk elects to spend money on. How much has been spent on the football field the last several years ??? Did you notice the metal palmetto trees behind Dr. Robertson-- how much did they cost ??? New Sidewalk behing adm building with benches and lights ??? did they realy spend over $200,000 for concesion stand and bathrooms at football field? A lot of items could have been done on a less elite basis and some of that money could go to teachers, supplies or anything else for the children.

I am not a teacher but i dont understand why it is such a problem to pay that amount what kind of example are you setting for your children, that you dont have to be responsible for them  . If you dont have a job take an arternoon and rake someones yard or wash someones car just do somthing and be responsible for this child YOU brought into this world. I bet the teachers would also trade off the 25.00 to some parents lf the would get more involved in the childs education and give them a little support.

The more responses that I read from parents about schools, fees, supplies, etc, the easier it is for me to understand why some of the students act the way they do.  The apple does not fall far from the tree.  To the person who wrote about 'those teachers and their nice furniture', you are welcome to visit my home and see my 20 year old furniture that was a hand me down from my aunt and uncle.  I'm just hoping that it holds up a few more years until I can save enough money to replace it.  Oh wait, I have an idea, every time I feel inclined to buy something for my students, I will put that money into my own furniture fund.  That 'tax write off' only amounts to about $20 at most.

The parents who think they know it all need to come and spend a week in the school.  I am a teacher because I love children and I love seeing them explore and learn new things.  It is very easy to see in the classroom which children have supportive parents and which ones have parents that gripe about EVERYTHING.  It is not an easy job and I certainly don't do it for the pay.  As for the supplies that are 'left over', I have four boxes of tissue left over from last year.  Those will be donated to the art and music teachers, library, and the school nurse.  Children do need a tissue in places other than their classroom.

I am a parent of three so I have to buy school supplies and pay school fees also.  While there is no one that can force you to pay fees or buy your child supplies, you need to realize that it isn't the school or the teacher you are putting at a disadvantage.  It is your own child that you are doing a disservice to.  Am I going to punish your child because they did not pay school fees?  No.  I learned a long time ago that it is not fair to punish any child for having sorry parents.

This is in response to the person who talked about teachers having their hands out for money throughout the year.  I buy ALOT of supplies out of pocket for a couple reasons.  1)  There are certain students who cannot afford certain supplies so I want to be prepared in that situation.  2)  Many students tend to forget certain items when they come to school...like a pencil and paper.  So, instead of taking away valuable classroom time to get that straightened out-I pull it out of my supplies and move along.  I have never asked for any handouts from parents.  I EXPECT them to send their children to school prepared and ready to learn.  If you're not a teacher you don't know what it's like to be one and you shouldn't pass judgement.

I am concerned about how many parents are not buying food or paying the water bill this week in order to be able to pay school registration fees.  I spoke to Ms. Clark up at the Edgefield County School offices and she stated (just as someone up there told me last year) that if you receive food stamps or state help (FI/welfare) that you do not have to pay school registration fees.

The schools do not tell people this.  They ask us to pay it in payments or tell us that we can not receive report cards and things like that.  Also they will still allow your child into school even if you do not have the money to send all those requested supplies in.  Please do not allow registration fees to cause you stress.  You do not have to pay them.

If you question this then please call Ms. Clark and ask her.  I just feel that people should know this as I know quite a few that worry about where the fees will come from.  I hope this helps some people.

To "w", who poo-poohed the teacher who donated $1000 of her own money on classroom supplies:
"w" stated that the teacher could write it off on taxes.  Yes, true, "w", but at the rate of 16% taxation, every $1000 written off saves about $160.  That means the teacher only laid out $840. If "w" and his/her ilk supported more than just a "minimally competent" public school system, he/she may have developed the
"genius" to do basic arithmetic.  The sorry state of public support for public education is a major factor that "w's" children will most likely have a lower standard of living than children fortunate enough to live in states that support teachers and education.  People named "w" sure seem  ignorant!

To the person in Johnston, I can tell you I am not in E.M.S,but I have some friends who are and I can tell you they complain about the addresses of patients.  Whether in the city or country, their house numbers should be large, visible, and reflective.  The problems they often encounter are small, dark, faded, or even nonexistant numbers.  All Edgefield County residents need to be sure that their house numbers are at least six inches high and reflective.  They must be placed on their house, or either a mailbox post or another post visible from the street.  This action will allow the E.M.S. to have a better chance of finding each and every resident when necessary.

As for the guy who says that he has seen E.M.S. in the community where he works run a lot more calls than the E.M.S here.  He needs to remember this is a small county compared to Augusta which is run by services that have problems keeping enough trucks to accomodate the excessive calls.  They also have problems finding addresses for the same reasons as Edgefield County.  Columbia, S.C. also has the same problem.

Even though you say that you make more in a week than an EMT in this county makes in a month, I can tell you that they don't do it for the glory or the pay, but because they care about the patients.  If 911 is called, you are likely to meet two E.M.T's responding to the call who have a smile, and will treat you politely.  They will give you the best care you need to keep you alive or safe until you are transported to the hospital.  With help from the local firefighters and law enforcement we have a good public safety department.

I live in Stephens Mill Subdivision.  We do not have covenants, codes, or Property Owners Association dues.  Until recently, I never felt like we needed them.  I work hard for my money, and try to keep my modest home and yard clean.  There is a house in the subdivision that has been abandoned by it's owner.  I heard a rumor that the owner's brother was planning on repairing the house, and selling it.  No one has done anything to this house in over 3 months.  It looks terrible, and the yard has grown into a jungle!  The grass is at least waist high in the front.  The partially fenced back is full of junk and brush is growing in.  I am afraid of poisonous snakes and who knows what else may be living back there.  I am tempted to ride over and cut it myself, but the owner has posted "No Trespassing" signs.  I do not want to have any problems with the law. Also, a developer came in and built new homes.  There was a problem with his contractors license, and most of the new homes were poorly built.  These houses are sitting vacant, with no one attending to the yards.  The neighborhood kids have broken out most of the windows with rocks.  I used to love my little neighborhood, but now I am embarrassed to tell anyone that I live here.  The sweet little kids have morphed into disrespectful, peace breaking teens.  Loud music, tires squealing, and people allowing their pets to poop in my yard, without cleaning it up are driving me mad.  Are there any Edgefield County laws or ordinances that could be used to make these people clean up their acts?  Who can I contact about enforcing them?

In response to the person writing in about the bad apples:

First off those problems have been brought to the attention of ALL the past and present officers in the department and discussed by ALL current and past firefighters as major concerns and it always feel on deaf ears.  You told on yourself for being either one of those firefighters that is still on the department or you are a spouse of one, by saying that we didn't bring up all the problems until we were terminated.  How else would you know about the problems unless you are a firefighter and/or have attended the board meetings.  These issues have NOT YET been discussed openly out in the community.  So your credibility for being a concerned citizen has just been thrown out the window.

Secondly can you or anyone else prove that any of us are "Bad Apples"?   Can you find any proof of any wrong doing we did either in the dept or out in the community?   If standing up for what is right and speaking your mind is being a "Bad Apple" then I guess you can call me a "Bad Apple".
The safety and well being of any firefighter as well as what is in the best interest of the dept should always be a top priority with any Chief in any dept.  It's mighty funny how these "concerns" we had/have are now being taken care of.  To me that looks and sounds like a guilty Sparky (firedog) barking.  If you were truly a concerned citizen, then you would be worried about what is going on in the dept your tax dollars are supporting and not whose image is at risk.

In reference to the extreme amount of school supplies that the county schools are requesting, you are buying supplies for all of the students in the classroom.  These supplies are used by students that are wearing Hilfiger clothing and $100 tennis shoes, but can't seem to afford to buy school supplies.  You do not have to buy for anyone but your child.  If you know of another student that absolutely cannot afford the supplies, it would be nice if you bought some supplies and gave them directly to the student.

I am a teacher in a surrounding county of Edgefield.  I have read over the past couple weeks comments about school fees and the supplies requested and felt that a few things should be cleared up.  My district also requires the fees each year.  These fees go to purchase supplies that the money from  federal, state, and local governments cannot buy.  There are very specific ways the money from the government has to be spent.  A lot of the everyday needs are not included or there is not enough money to for the entire year.  Also, schools often reward students for various things throughout the year like AR points.  Money has to come from some where.  As far as the supplies, I have to purchase out of my own pocket at least 10 times what you buy or pay every year.  Yes, we get $200 a year from the state, but last year alone I spent over a $1000 on things for my students that aren't provided by the school or parents.  I never complain but wonder how many people do the same for their jobs and do not get reimbursed for the money.  I do not earn a six figure income but make sacrifices to help my students.  If you are an adult, you should know nothing in life is free.  If it will help my children with their education, then I am willing to help.  The price is small compared to what they will get out of it in the future.

Some time ago, in Wandering Minds, someone suggested that we direct our concerns about the Edgefield County School Board to our state supt. Jim Rex.  I wrote and recently received his reply (in quotes below). Obviously, writing to the state officials is not a viable solution to our problems here in Edgefield.

"Thank you for your e-mail regarding the Edgefield County School Board.  You indicated in your e-mail that you thought that the School Board needs oversight.  While there are mechanisms for state oversight of school districts, that oversight does not trigger unless the school district is rated unsatisfactory.  Edgefield County School District had an average rating on the 2006 report card; therefore, state oversight is not warranted at this time.

You mentioned possible violations of district policies and employment practices in your e-mail.  These areas are outside of the Department of Education’s authority at this point.  School districts are independent political subdivisions.  The Edgefield School Board is an elected body, which is directly accountable to the voters of Edgefield.  You may want to address your concerns to the Board as a whole.

Thank you for your concern for education.
Sincerely,
Jim Rex
State Superintendent of Education"

The following is a situation given to me verbally today so it is paraphrased: A woman said she took her elderly father to the Edgefield County Hospital because he became disoriented the other morning. The doctor examined the man and stated he was suffering from dementia and sent him home. This bothered the woman and her husband because the father gets around fine, working in the garden, travels to get a hair cut own his own, cooks and cares for himself and has never suffered any such symptoms before that day and gave the doctor of this information. The father is in his 80's.

Later in the day the father suddenly could not speak, stand, or walk. An ambulance was called and the woman explained to the EMT's they had returned from the hospital earlier in the day. The woman said she wanted to take the father to Aiken Regional and the EMT then stepped outside and called Edgefield County Hospital to return and inform her that the father had dementia and that his symptoms were just something they would have "to get used to." The EMT's did offer to transport the father but said it was not necessary, the woman said.

Later the father was taken to Aiken Regional where he was briefly examined and then the doctor looked at the prognosis from the doctor at ECH and stated it was dementia. When it was explained that the man has never suffered any symptoms of this prior to this occasion he was examined more in depth and found to have suffered a stroke.

He is said to be recovering at a local rehab facility and doing well. I did inform the woman she should contact Edgefield County EMS Director Jewel Plaxco about the event. A copy of this has been sent to the proper administrative personnel.
This is the situation as it was explained to me. I am unclear as to if the later transport was by ambulance or personal transportation.

To the person on the outside looking in, the bad apples brought these problems up to the chief and board way before they were terminated. This is why they were terminated because they brought it to the open. No one is destroying the dept., but the ones there now. If you live in the district and truly or not already on the dept., dating or married to one of them then that is great. I agree you should join the dept. You will see that the things that the bad apples are fighting for is now happening like the physicals, and shots. Why is that happening if it was ran right in the first place. The chief has been there two years why wait so long to take a interest in the dept. This is something he should have done before now. If you join you will be the only one cause right now the only ones they say are joining either lives in Aiken County or inside another district. So if the bad apples were asking for something bad then why get rid of them and then do what they were asking. Makes you look guilty in my eyes. Why should they start a new dept. when there is one already here for them to be apart of. I don't think they were taking over as you say. They were standing up for the rights of all fireman. My thing is why say you are short handed and then get rid of people makes no senses. If you feel so strong about your dept. as you say why don't you show up to meetings and voice your concerns. This way you really see what is going on in the dept. instead of reading about it here. To your part about being a wonderful fireman no one has stated that the ones there was not wonderful fireman just the management is messed up. I hope this gives you new light but I doubt it will but I tried.

Now, I realize it's only $25 but I do agree with the other poster that with the copy paper, ziplocs, hand sanitizer, tissues and everything else we have to buy the $25 is a bit much. It's not in every district in SC. In fact, I don't know of another one that requires it, though I am sure there are others. I thought it was odd at first but then the more familiar I became with the county and the actions of the school board it all makes sense. There are many many people in this county that can't afford the fees and if the students don't pay them, they have to miss out on field trips and other school events from what I hear. That's just unfair, especially for those kids whose parents truely can't afford it!

Rep. Bill Clyburn and I have met many times and even dined together over the years and we get along very well. Mr. Clyburn is a very likable person. He is quick witted, personable, and knows how to work a crowd. He is also the sole Democrat candidate and is not out on the hard campaign trail that the six Republican candidates are facing leading up to the primary, and no doubt subsequent run-off. Rep. Clyburn does not need to fight his way through the primary. I just do not see the "news" angle on that side of the race. News update: Rep. Bill Clyburn is still the lone Democrat in the race. That should just about cover the story for another week or two.

Ole Monroe Kneece is such a piece of work!  He hasn't a clue.  Every office that is housed in the courthouse abides by the 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Monroe you fool, why even mention elected officials when surely you know Magistrate's are appointed NOT elected.  I never thought I'd say this, but I agree with Mr. Dorn.  If I had to pay a ticket, I would have to pay it on my lunch hour as I work everyday.  Sounds like common sense that they would be open for business during this time.

To the writer complaining about EMS occasionally having trouble finding an address location; let me respond.  First at any given time there are two or maybe three trucks on call for the entire county.  If one of the trucks goes to a call the other truck must come to a central point and standby for the next call.  This theoretically puts the truck in closer proximity to areas that have a traditionally high call volume.  There are times when the standby crew may not be as familiar with the area as others.  ALL ambulances have a county map book and they are as accurate as possible but the growth of the county, especially on the lower end, means that  often new developments, houses and roads are added quicker than they can be put into the map book.  Often the property owners road is little more than a single lane road and may not be properly identified.

Another problem is that often house numbers are not posted where they can be seen or just do not exist.  You would think that all residents would take the time to display their house numbers in a conspicuous location so that EMS, fire and law enforcement could see them easily. Regrettably there are times when family members give wrong directions because they are  upset or frightened.  Yes, there are time when  EMS must seek assistance from law enforcement or dispatch to find a location.  Would you rather they not ask for help and therefore delay their arrival??  Our E911 system takes into account location and provides computer maps and  other address aides to assist all emergency disciplines.  Asking for directions does not, as you conclude, delay the response time.  The request for directions is made upon receipt of the call if there is even a shadow of a doubt as to the location of the call.

Finally, you made the remark that you hope that if you need an ambulance that you are on a main road so you can be found. It is my sincere hope that you do not ever need an ambulance but if you do my wish is that it be an Edgefield County ambulance that picks you up regardless of the location.  I know you will be in excellent hands.

Editor's note: I have worked along side of almost every EMS worker at some point in time over the past several years. If I need EMS I hope that I am in Edgefield County at the time. They are indeed some of the finest in the state.

I chose my job out of town(making more money in a week than you probably make in a month!!!) and I experience EMS in surrounding counties that go on the same calls that you claim to go on that are SO dangerous: shootings, stabbings, brutal wrecks, DOA's and are ABLE to actually find the location(WHOA) what a surprise. I am not bashing all EMS workers.

When Mr. Pettigrew has his scheduled meeting with the North Augusta Administrator, he needs to keep in mind the fact that funding from the state and federal governments are based on population.  It is not just a matter of North Augusta taking the Merriwether community off the hands of Edgefield County, it is a matter of our county losing in several areas.   North Augusta grows bigger and Edgefield becomes smaller.  The citizens within the planned annexation will be governed not only by Edgefield County but also North Augusta rules.

Has North Augusta already taken over the water tank on Hwy 25 just past Sweetwater Rd.?   If not why was a North Augusta utilities person leaving the locked fence area enclosing the tank today?

Most of the new people moving into Edgefield County are encouraged to do so with the promise of no city taxes.  Merriwether district contains the smallest acreage with the largest population.  Evidence of this is that part of this district was moved from Mr. Hudson to Mr. Kitchens area.

Why not let McCormick take the northwestern part of the county, Greenwood take the north to north east, Saluda take the north east to east, Aiken take the eastern and North Augusta take the southern part.  Then the county council wouldn't have anyone to worry about but Edgefield.  Silly, yes but it wouldn't be the first silly thing council did.  It is with a lack of vision that decisions are made for this county.

What did you mean in the editors post on Aug. 6, when you said that the state said that the location for the new FCHS is not fit for a high school?  How is it that on Aug. 11 2007, at the expo at the school, FCHS said the plans for the new school and the loan will be out for all to see.  Maybe you can look into this and find out if the plans and loan is real.  I was told yesterday by a county employee that they are now to "stay away" from the new property because of the free work that WAS done.  They are no longer allowed to go over there and that was told to me from a supervisor.  Thanks for any help.  Love Edgefield Daily!!!!

Editor's note: Thank you for your kind comment and for reading EdgefieldDaily.com. The location is on Stephens Road, one of the curviest roads in the county. State officials inspected the road a few years back and stated that due to the countless curves in the road it was not suited to have a school placed there for safety reasons. But, to the FCHS BOE, safety has long been a thing that they take very lightly. After all, they allow students caught with dope to stay in school. It will be interesting to see how FCHS pays for the so-called loan. They cannot use the funds they receive to build a building, only educate the students. I have always stated that there will not be a new school building. The FCHS BOE makes yearly claims of a "new loan" and a "new school" and it always turns out to be a lie. I expect nothing less this time around. Snakes are snakes, tigers are tigers, and liars are liars.

It is ridiculous the amount of school supplies that we are required to purchase.  I wouldn't mind paying the $25 registration fee if we didn't have to supply the school with copy paper, tissues, zip lock bags, paper towels and hand sanitizer!   I received my son's supply list yesterday for MMS and I was shocked how much all these items ended up costing me.  Out of curiosity I contacted Evans Middle School for a supply list for the same grade.  Now I know it is in GA not SC, but I wanted to just compare apples to apples.  They only had a handful of items not a page full.  Now what is wrong with this picture?

I was told GA does not require the $25 registration fee.  Do you know if this is true?

For your information, EMS gets "escorted" to certain calls, bc certain calls present them with danger..such as assaults, shootings, stabbings, DOAs.  Also, perhaps the map-books provided to EMS by the county are inadequate.  And thirdly, if you feel you can get off your ass and do CPR, extricate, treat patients, intubate, interpret cardiac rhythms, memorize algorhythms, do drug calculations off the top of your head, work brutal car wrecks, deal with the emotional stress of "bad calls" and locate every street in Edgefield County all at the same time...I'm sure there are spare applications at the county office...meanwhile be a little grateful to the people who do the job you can't. Wake up Edgefield County citizens and in particular council members Hudson and Kitchens.  Did anyone else see the article in the Saturday Augusta Chronicle regarding North Augusta's expansion.  It stated that more than 2,000 new homes have been platted or proposed for North Augusta, and the city continues to expand into Edgefield County. The city administrator Sam Bennett stated further "Very soon, we will probably be the largest municipality in Edgefield County."  Is anyone else concerned that the major entrances (exit 1, exit 5 and the potential for Five Notch Road) into Edgefield County from I-20 are already developed by North Augusta.

Every opportunity for retail development through rezoning along these routes into the County has been denied by the current council members. While the members fiddle, North Augusta is taking advantage of this potential economic boom.  What I wonder is how does a city within another county continue to expand into our county without our benefitting from the increased tax base?  It is common knowledge that for the past several years the Merriweather community and surrounding areas have seen the greatest growth in the County and yet there is no park, no developed retail and no public high school in that area.  Makes you wonder whose hands are in whose pockets.  A visit to the tax office may well tell us who owns all the land in these hot spots.  We might get a better picture.  But then the council members and others don't want that, now do they?

Next council meeting is Tuesday night 8-7-07 at 6:00.  You can't complain if you don't care enough to be informed.

Editor's note: The Edgefield County Council wants the City of North Augusta to take Merriwether off their hands. They are, in my opinion, hoping and promoting the annexation of Merriwether into the City of North Augusta while still benefiting from the increase in tax revenues. Merriwether must form a town before 2010 to prevent the Edgefield County Council from selling out their own residents to North Augusta.

The plan is over ten years old and is well known by county council members. It is accepted as "information" every year without comment.

Editor's note: It is a growing problem and deportations do take place. Last week four were taken into custody by Federal Officials (ICE) for deportation. In reality, they will probably be back in the area, and in jail, in a few weeks. That is quite a distance to travel if, in fact, they are actually deported. I would bet they are "deported" to Atlanta and released. I cannot prove that, but I personally believe that is what is taking place.

Thought I would weigh in on the snake issue. While there may instances where you might be in a situation that you would have to kill a poisonous snake, most of the time if you will stay still it will move on by. It only wants to get away from you. I get really upset when I see people run over a snake on the road. Let it pass. Chances are it is not poison and it is not bothering you. Think of this, if we did not have snakes we would be overrun with all kinds of rodents and other creatures that can ruin grain and food supplies and can carry diseases. We have several chicken snakes that we see all the time in the yard. The biggest one is named Oscar and many times curls up on an old Oak tree limb and sleeps. Just be still and watch and you will be surprized at how beautiful they are.

I hope you or your son are not bitten by a rattlesnake and I certainly hope you and your son on not one of the 12 people out of 300,000,000 Americans that die each year from a snakebite.  Just being bitten would be awful.

Look at this site, for example.  How many snake bites have you read about?  How many car crashes have you read about?  Do you still drive?

I did move a rattlesnake out of my garage and put it in the forest about 1/2 mile from my house.  Then I put snake repellant around my garage.  We see things differently, that's all.

Your son has a better chance of dying in a car or hunting accident than being bitten by a snake.  And that is a fact.  If you have some valid causes of death stats that refute this, share them.

As a Vietnam Era Veteran and a former Vietnam Veteran's counselor with those afflicted by Agent Orange and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I am quite concerned with the spraying of herbicides along Edgefield County Roads.

I have seen far too many cancers, immunological illness and birth defects correlated with herbicide use to ignore the unsightly dead vegetation along Edgefield County streets and highways.

I live in a small development near Edgefield served by a mile long DOT-maintained road.  Although homeowners mow the road borders, the DOT still mows and sprays.  This seems redundant, wasteful and potentially dangerous.

While working in my yard last week I observed a DOT truck spraying herbicide along the road in front of my home.  I hailed the driver, explained my concerns and asked him to stop spraying.  He replied, "This is state property; we can do anything we want."  He then called his supervisor.  As we waited for the administrator to arrive, herbicide continued to spew from the tank, running down to a pond where a friend and his young daughter had caught twenty-five beautiful bream a week before.

First a sheriff's deputy arrived and took down all my vital information.  Then the supervisor arrived, and I again explained my concerns.  He agreed to stop the spraying until the issue was resolved.  Later I received a very cordial call from the county DOT supervisor, Luther Padgett, who assured me that herbicides would not be sprayed near my home.

We should be very wary about the chemicals we expose ourselves and our children to.  We were told that Agent Orange was safe.  We were also told that depleted uranium, Avandia, DDT and Thalidomide were safe.  We are now living with their terrible legacies.

Editor's note: You should contact the Edgefield County Building and Planning Dept. and the County Transportation Committee for county road paving. As far as my guess as to when it would happen; it is somewhere between when hell freezes over and pigs fly. Too many "important people" are in line for self serving expenditures of public funds to waste time on regular taxpayers."

We are in similar situation on Townes Rd.--a road with 18 homes--We were told that paving would begin this past May, but now that Howard Gibson is gone, there seems to be no interest in that road.  I'd appreciate any elaboration about "the important people" that are in line for C-Funds.  Thanks for your web-site.

Editor's note: The list would be too long for a Wandering Minds post, but consider the paving of Shortcut Road for Fox Creek Charter High School (99% white), which serves just a few people. Not to mention that the state said the location is not fit for a high school and there will never be a school building built on the property. Oh, and the county is also paying to do the grading of the private property for free in addition to paving the dirt road. Also look at who buys property that the road leading to it suddenly gets re-paved. Thank you for your kind comment and for reading EdgefieldDaily.com

To the person living in Merriweather and "see timber rattlers quite a bit and could never imagine killing one". One question: what would you do if you walk out your back door and there is a "rattler" laying at your doorsteps? I guess your answer would be to pick it up and return it to the woods and not go "againist the values of conservation and natural balance of nature". I also live in the country (Colliers) and see rattlers, but there is "no quarter" on a rattle-snake, because I believe my grandchildren are more important than a rattle-snake. I have one suggestion to you when you go bike riding; keep a snake bit kit handy, because the the next one you stand beside might be a little more "testier"!

Editor's note: In order: 1 -  Because I have always had an affinity for snakes. 2 - Because it was caught in netting around a small fig tree and was suffering as the netting was cutting into its skin.  3 - Because it was a nonpoisonous black rat snake which eats rodents and other pests. I often catch black snakes, rat snakes, king snakes, and other similar snakes and release them in various locations on our own property to cut down on rodents and deter poisonous snakes.

Last year while traveling thru the Columbia airport on a hunting trip I tried to check my gun ( which was unloaded and in a locked hard side case) at the baggage check in. I was informed that a TSA officer had to screen it because it was a firearm, no problem i thought. The officer then checked the gun and informed me that it had tested positive for...hold your breath...gunpowder residue. I then informed him that yes it was a gun and it had been recently fired. Still unsure, the officer called a supervisor over and told him what was happening. The supervisor then informed me that I may not be able to board because the gun was testing positive for gunpowder. To make a long story short me and my gun were allowed on the plane after several more calls were made by the tsa personnel. Just thought y'all might enjoy this story of our tax dollars at work.

" Rattlesnakes are deadly and I understand why someone would kill the snake if it is found in an area they and others are working in. "

Come on brother.  The chances of actually death from a timber rattler bite is very small.  The chance of death in a car accident is far greater.  Do you ride in cars?  http://www.aafp.org/afp/20020401/1367.html
From 1960-1990, an average of 12 people a year die from snake bites each year in the United States.

Education is the key to this issue.  While it is my opinion that a timber rattler bite would be an awful thing to endure, the likelyhood of death is infamatesimal.

But for the folks reading Wandering Minds have been told that rattlesnakes are deadly and killing them is the understandable.  But I bet more people die from taking asirpin(sp?) than from rattlesnake bites.

I'll close with this.  I'd understand them relocating the snake to an area they don't live or work in.  I did just that when I found a timber rattler in my garage last year.  I am going to buy some snake repellent this weekend for my garage!

Editor's note: Of all snake bites in the Southeast, rattle snakes make up about two thirds. Of those, roughly ten percent result in major tissue damage or death. Sixty per cent are "dry bites" where no venom is delivered in the bite.

On Friday I actually went on a snake call with Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter. A snake was tangled in a net in a backyard. I reached down and picked the snake up and we were able to cut it free and I took it to a nearby wooded area and released it.

As far as proof reader, if you would provide transportation, I would be glad to do it.

Editor's note: The construction of the business will begin in the next month I am told. The location will be across the street from Pendarvis, not at the old Hardee's building.

In reference to the comment about Edgefield Construction:  It sounds like the original writer did not do his/her homework prior to sending this comment.  I urge this person to do a little investigation into the way the bids are handled.  To start with, I believe they are Sealed Bids.  If you find any wrongdoing, please enlighten us.  Also, could you please tell me what Mr. Pettigrew has to do with it?

I was curious as to why the On The Record section of the site has not been updated recently. I thought it was an excellent idea to let reader know the outcome of the arrests. Especially if someone was exonerated by the court. Just curious. Thanks.

Editor's note: The page has been updated twice but the information is not showing up. The page may have to be relocated if the problem cannot be resolved by this weekend. IT staff are working on the issue.

I enjoy reading the Wandering Minds section & have a question for the editor. I have often wondered what if anything our county councilmen are paid. It seems that the meetings are very short & very little business is actually conducted at the meetings. I am curious also if other benefits such as expense accounts, mileage, travel allowances etc, are available along with health insurance and retirement benefits for the councilmen. Thanks for any information you could provide on this subject!! I think most taxpayers want to know.

Editor's note: Chairman Monroe Kneece is paid $10,800 (or $900 per monthly meeting), Vice-chair Willie Bright receives $9,600 (or $800 per monthly meeting) and all other councilmen receive $8,400 ($700 for each meeting). They are paid for mileage if they travel and accommodations are paid by the county in addition to meals. I have no information as to insurance or other benefits.

I believe Shane Massey's Parents are quiet flattered that they are now considered to be a part of Edgefield*s Elites.  They*re the only people besides Shane and his wife I have seen in the picture this web site published.   I look forward to the Primary.

As we now prepare to decide on a replacement for Tommy Moore, one thing we need to know.  Yes I’m White, and as we all know, just being White makes me prejudiced against all liberal Democrats.

But did you know that every Black serving in the S.C. Senate or House of Representatives is a Democrate.
Not one is an Independent, Republican or even acts to be conservative. If Rev. Sharpton or Jesse Jackson said vote this way, every Black representative will follow that request.

I think we need to realize where we are going with this type of leadership.

I live in Merriweather and see timber rattlers quite abit.  I could never imagine killing one.  One scared the heck of me just a week ago while riding the trails at the FATS.  I had stopped and unknowingly stood about a foot away from a 3' timber rattler for about 20 seconds.  He never got testy.  I didn't realize it until my buddy rolled up to me and saw it.  It did scare the daylights out of me.  But my thoughts were that he lives here and I am just a visitor.  I don't applaud the killing of this snake.  It goes against the values of conservation and the natural balance of nature.

What do you think?

Editor's note: I am a snake lover and have caught more snakes than colds over my lifetime. I generally would remove them from a home, barn, or other areas and release them into the wild. Rattlesnakes are deadly and I understand why someone would kill the snake if it is found in an area they and others are working in.

I have to admit that I agree with the mother that does not like the idea of teachers coming into her home to "meet" her pre-k child.  What good does that do?  Most kids that age need to see the school and their classroom before the first day!  What parent signs their child up for daycare and does not ever take them to "visit" and see it?  I even take my older kids to the High School & Middle School to see it and meet teachers before the first day!  I believe that any parent that allows these people into their homes will be automatically "judged" by those people.  If their house isn't 'just right' or they don't have much money or have nice furniture like those teachers do.  I do not agree with this at all.

And to the person that asked her about "free daycare"!  So what if it does help her by having her child in pre-k!  I am a single mom of four that does not receive any government help except health care!  I would love to be able to find a safe place for my daughter to go while I am at work that is free!  The ABC list in Edgefield County (or the state of SC for that fact) is far too long.  It is sad.

I hope the pre-k thing works for the mother that is worried about it.  I will pray that the teacher will not judge you!

Please someone provide the answers to the following questions so all Edgefield County citizens have the same information.
Please name the County Elite?
What makes them the Elite and better than the average citizen?
Who are the puppet masters pulling the strings?
Who controls the Edgefield County Republican Party?
If the incumbent cannot manage the Appeals Board how can he manage the Republican Party?
So, who are the puppet masters?

Who does the Republican Party of Edgefield County support for the seat vacated by Mr. Tommy Moore?
Need to know so we can vote for another candidate.

Several past articles in the Edgefield Daily and everyday conversations in the County usually make reference to the person(s) running Edgefield County.  Let us get this out in the open so there will be no misunderstandings?  Do we need to pay homage to the individual(s)?  We also need to know the ranking(s) of the Elite, who is first, second, and etc.?

I do believe the citizens of Edgefield County will start seeing some options in the future County Elections.  It will be up to us, the citizens, to put into positions of power the individuals who do not owe political or friends debts.

Do you have any information on when - if ever - there are plans to pave Thurmond Road?  Who would someone contact to try and get this project accomplished?

Editor's note: You should contact the Edgefield County Building and Planning Dept. and the County Transportation Committee for county road paving. As far as my guess as to when it would happen; it is somewhere between when hell freezes over and pigs fly. Too many "important people" are in line for self serving expenditures of public funds to waste time on regular taxpayers.

This is just an opinion on the announced candidates for the open senate seat. I have heard too many negative comments about this Bill Hixon guy to take him seriously, even though I've never met him. I do not know Shane Massey either. He may be a fine young man but the way he made his announcement about running for this position scares me and a lot of Edgefield Countians. His choice to make his candidacy known on the town square in Edgefield, while surrounded by the Edgefield "elite" sent up a red flag, for me. Have the Edgefield County Republicans for Tommy Moore finally found them a republican to endorse? It sounds like since thier horse quit the race they are trying to find another who will let them call in favors. As you can see, I am fed up with all Edgefield County politics. I am a republican but I will probably vote for Rep. Bil Clyburn in this election since I know him and his views. He has helped a lot of people and done a lot of good for Edgefield county. We don't need another puppet on a string who is bought and paid for by the same ones who support our county council.

Editor's note: I covered Mr. Massey's announcement and I did not see any of the "elite's" you speak of there, just regular citizens. Not to take a position, and I have not made my own determination in the race as of yet, but Hixon and Clyburn have far more ties to the present political make-up than Massey or others claiming to be running for the seat. Bill Clyburn will be a formidable opponent as a sitting State Representative on the Democrat for any Republican candidate.

I posted my email regarding the 4K program because I wanted to know why a home visit is necessary.  I had spoken with parents whose children attended 4k in the past (it has been a while thoug) and they were never visited at home.  As for 'calming their fears' What is wrong with an open house to let the child see his/her new classroom?  Having someone come to our home and meet him (if that's all it is about) would be fine, but that's not going to calm a child's fear of a new place with new experiences and 19-20 other new children.  My son is so excited about going to 4K he wants to fix his lunch every evening to go to school.   (as for the poster with the remark about negative vibes, for your information not everything discussed in my home is freely discussed in front of the children so you can see he doesn't have 'negative vibes').  And for the poster that stated they didn't know a parent who wouldn't want to provide snacks for the class--you haven't talked with the many parents that I have spoken with.  Don't get me wrong, I will certainly do what is asked of me, I simply wanted to state that some of this is getting out of hand.  I didn't realize this home visit was a mandate of any kind, perhaps if there had been any information out after the children were registered and accepted into the program, instead of (I am still awaiting our supply list letter etc) a few weeks before school is to start I would have felt differently.  I will say that I did contact other surrounding school systems and the people I spoke with stated they wouldn't have time to do a 'home visit' with 'each' child enrolled in their 4K program.  I'm not knocking the teachers, they have it hard enough as it is, I'm aggravated with the lack of information, and the supplies though, because I feel that our school tax money is not being spent on supplies for the teachers and children.  I spoke with a teacher in Aiken County and she told me how her class is allotted a certain amount of money for 'janitorial' supplies and the students didn't need to bring those.  The teacher, whom ever it may be is welcomed at my home, I'm sorry though that they have to spend the last several days of their 'vacation' running all over the area meeting children and parents.  As for the poster with the 'certified mom' comment.  If I didn't get upset or concerned or involved regardless of the subject matter regarding my children, I would consider that bad parenting.  To go willy nilly with whatever anyone else says is good or needed for my child is irresponsible.

I spoke with Rep. Bill Clyburn (D) and Bill Hixon (R) today. Mr. Clyburn said he has filed for the seante race and would set up a time to meet and provide his campaign information and an interview very soon. Bill Hixon said he has not filed as of yet but would be doing so this week. Mr. Hixon also said he would set up a time to meet as well. I hear two more Republican candidates intend to file. If there is a field of four for the Republican Primary you can pretty well count on a run-off with the top two vote getters. I doubt anyone will jump in against Bill Clyburn on the Democrat side.

For the parent who is concerned about the home visit requirement for his/her 4 year old son who will be going to WEP as well as the later starting day:
I am assuming that your son is registered for the Child Development program.  I couldn't find anything on the ECSD website regarding the program; however, the link from the Aiken County Schools should help clear up some of your concerns in general.  Please note that the specifics of the programs could differ between the two counties so you might consider contacting WEP directly.

I agree that the school supply list gets more ridiculous each year - but the school budget keeps getting cut.  My daughter will start 6th grade - she's required to bring a package of copy paper, whereas the boys just have to bring paper towels.  In 8th grade, the Algebra I teacher requires 4 spiral notebooks with dividers and pockets.  Why not just use one large 4 subject spiral notebook? And just how many dry erase markers does a child need for school?  Most teachers want at least one if, not a whole package.  My family of five gets by with one black dry erase marker just fine. When it is lost or dries out, then we get another.

I would like to respond to the person who was so concerned about the child development home visits that our 4K teachers do before the students come to school.  I do teach at Parker, but at another school in the district.  First of all, this is not just done in Edgefield County, it is a state wide practice that the state department of education requires.  Also, it is not done to "form opinions as to the child's behavior and environment".  These visits are done so that the child can meet his or her new teacher in the child's environment to help calm nerves and fears before school starts.  Most parents have no problem with this idea.  As to the supplies, I believe that all students have certain supplies they are asked to bring with them to school and what parent wouldn't be willing to send snacks for the class several times a school year.

Before you send your e-mail to the editor, please use spell check. Obviously, you didn't pass English. Otherwise, you would have sounded like a civilized person. I think with all the troubles in the world today, there needs to be a deputy on patrol at all high schools. Officer Reel does a wonderful job and so do the administration.

I really hope that Dr. Smurph does not gets the Superintendents job.  I would not like to see ECSD choose a person who has no respect for the students.   I have heard him refer to the students at FCHS as "little boys and little girls".  Some of those fine young men and women are old enough to be in the armed forces and die to protect his right to be disrespectful. Just hope he stays at FCHS where he can only impact a small group of students.

The Poster who asks the question, "Is You Jesus" represents the many ignorant followers of Professor Bibbs and Sister Sallie. Yes, these two school board members and their followers should be referred to unflattering names when they deserve it. And they deserve it! These people have not earned our respect, they have only jammed their middle finger at us with the contempt their NAACP agenda mandates. And, our children and teachers suffer. When Sister Sallie, Professor Bibbs and their followers nominate one of their relatives for the Superintendent position, this should be the signal for Edgefield parents and voters to take legal action against the board and get them legally removed.  I am prejudice against any person who has an agenda that misrepresents the best educational interests for my child and your child. Is Me prejudice? Go ask Sister Sallie and Professor Bibbs how to spell the word?

Why aren't the Child Development classes starting when everyone else starts? What are you looking for, free daycare service? That's what a lot of people want, free babying sitting services. You may or may not know this , but CD is not mandatory. This program is designed to help students who fall short in basic skills (motor, concepts, and speech). Yes, they learn to write their names, how to use scissors, shapes, colors and color words, numbers to 25 and beyond, even write words and short sentences(Depending on your child and the support of parents to reinforce these skills at home). As for the home visits, no they are not trained psychologists, but they can get a better sense of family structure for the child. If you don't want your child to get a head start, you don't have to send your child. Keep him or her home with you or send them to Gleams or daycare and wait until next year and that way you won't have to worry about h ome visits, just treats on Friday, wipes, paper towels, hand sanitizer, etc, etc, etc. Good luck, I hope your child does not have the same attitude that you have. I'm sure you know, being a "certified" MOM and all that children can pick up negative vibes from their parents.

This is in response to the parent of the child starting K4 this year.  Obviously, this is the first child that you have had to attend the K4 program.  I have taught in a neighboring school district for 18 years (I don't teach K4) and the K4 children have always started after the other students due to home visits by the teacher.  I may be mistaken, but I think that this is a mandate of the program since it is heavily funded by federal money and not state funds.  Personally, I think it would be great if all teachers made home visits to their students.  When a teacher has knowledge of the home situation of the students they can better understand issues that the student may be dealing with.  For the sake of your child, please don't begin his school years with such a bad attitude.  You certainly aren't getting him off to a good start and when you begin to blast his teacher with negative questions you will become known as 'one of THOSE parents'.   Instead, volunteer in your child's school and learn more about the system.  Once you have seen what many teachers deal with on a daily basis I'm sure you will be more understanding.

If you still have so many concerns, remember that K4 is not required by law.  Feel free to continue paying for day care for another year and give that slot to another child.
