I am writing concerning the submission concerning Scott Chitty's stand on the ST Express Bus.  It has been so obvious all along who Scott represents on the Board....supposed to be the Merriwether Area....NO WAY...he's on there for one purpose and one purpose only...Fox Creek.   Of course, he would not want to see anything to be developed to aid in getting students up to Thurmond.   It might allow an opportunity for some kids to have a chance to go to Thurmond instead of going to the convenient place. There are many parents who send their kids to Fox Creek because it is just too much of a hardship to get their child to Thurmond....with the addition of this Express Bus, it has helped so many people.  I for one hope that the bus continues.  Thus far, there are almost 20 riders and predictions are that it will increase over the next few weeks as the word gets out.  Yes, there are other buses that come into the area and  yes the kids could ride those existing buses....get on around 6:00 a.m. for over a 90 minute ride. Why would our so called "Representative" go against an idea that helps our children and our parents so much?   Pretty obvious, huh?   I hope he gets uuprooted from his Board Seat, especially if he does anything whatsoever to tarnish the Express Bus...he's treading on thin ice as it is.

Wow! I had to pinch myself when I heard the announcement. Talk about lapse of judgement. McCain just gave the election away. The Republicans were desperate. Who has ever heard of Sarah Palin? I mean I have because I have seen her on Charlie Rose, but what about all you numbskulls in readerland. It's like a dream come true. Way to go Johnny!! It is a sign that he has full blown dementia. How big is the National Guard in Alaska anyway? Do you think they have enough people to form a baseball team? OBAMA in '08. We can trust his judgement.

Editor's note: Let's take a look at Obama's "judgment". He admires his father who was a ranking communist government official. He states in his book his mentor was a card carrying member of the communist party. He has attended a church for 20 years with a radical racist preacher who hates America, and white people, he is able to get a sweetheart deal for his mansion from a man convicted of political corruption, he sat on a board and helped fund a known terrorist that tried to blow up the Pentagon, has never accomplished anything, and has served only 144 days in the Senate when he ran for President.

And that is "your guy"?

Oh, and McCain is done because he selected a woman to be on the ticket? Who was that you were singing the praise of early on? Oh, that's right, Hillary Clinton... a woman. Your remember her, she was the one that almost took the nomination. Don't forget your party's Speaker of the House, left-wing nut job Nancy Pelosi who wants to take invertment profits of hard working Americans to augment the income of illegal aliens, who of course will then register to vote as Democrats even though they are not citizens (another Democrat initiative).

I'm loving every minute of this election. Liberals are going to have to admit who they are once and for all and not even the liberal biased national media is going to be able to hide it. Be proud, you are ahead of the curve in that regard.

I almost forgot, Obama's running mate said he would support McCain over Obama in the early stages of the race. Shhhhh... we wouldn't want that to get out. Face it, a high school civics teacher has more experience to be president than Obama.

What, no comments about the outstanding SAT scores at Thurmond.. Mr. Editor why don't you explain how that works.  How many students actually took the SAT.  What percentage of the senior & junior classes took the SAT at Thurmond & Fox Creek.. I think everyone will find this interesting..  Maybe not, especially if they could care less about the County's Education System and the poor future outlook for the majority who are ill-prepared to enter the job market and/or attain higher education.. Re: Program or mainframe, the verbiage isn't the issue

Reflection: It's obvious that you do not know the difference. This only shows your inability to understand and analyze complex issues.

No, it only shows that you are you have an inability to admit that you are wrong. However, I will say in my defense that there is no way I could have succeeded in my profession if I coudn't analayze complex issues. FYI I have a degree in science with honors, I am NOT stupid  , maybe you can't understand what you read, I said "I was only repeating what I was told. his words not mine," Also, NC, Florida have DEBIT type cards that are issued for those without bank accounts. As I said all those issues have been taken care of. SC just keeps spinning her wheels, and I plan on asking Jean Toal the very same question. Do you?

responding to the comment about Mrs.Coleman, it was clearly stated that the driver Mr.Daniel went off the road before striking the victim!!!!

Editor's note: At the time it was stated Mr. Fraley ran off the road before striking Ms. Coleman, not at the time he struck her. There has been no released information as to where Ms. Coleman was in the road, or if she was even on the road, at the time of impact. As I have said, let the investigation run its course before passing any judgements.

In response to all the mayhem about the accident involving a young white boy accidentally hitting a pedestrain: I personaly know the boy, and know for a FACT that he would NEVER EVER intentionally do something like that. It was an accident no matter what your race is. Why is it that Edgefield
always has to throw out the race card? And why in the world was she walking down the road at 2am anyway? In no way am I condoning drinking and driving, but it was an ACCIDENT!!! Please keep both families in your prayers, and put yourself in Daniel's position... he didn't mean to and will have to live with this on his conscience for the rst of his life

To the person who said "she'd still be alive today", you must remember that she (may have been) intoxicated.  She could've stumbled in front of any vehicle on the road that morning.  Everything always seems to be turned into a racial issue if there's a black and white involved. Why is this?  I'm pretty sure that the "white" boy didn't get in his car and plan to go hit this black women, or for that matter anyone.  Yes, he was drinking, but she too was walking the road in the middle night drinking.  He will serve his time.  Just remember, that he will have to live with the thought that he  killed someone for the rest of his life.  I think that is a pretty awful punishment, and to the family of Mrs. Coleman, I'm truly sorry for your loss.  I do want you all to put yourself in D. Fraley's shoes and think how feels.  Don't make this a racial issue.  It was a preventable accident on both sides.

I read the headline about SAT Scores posted August 26th, then while coming home from work I passed by FCHS.   Although I didn't have time to verify the exact wording, I saw their sign says something like:
Congratulation FCHS!  Highest SAT scores in tri-state.  What's up with that?

Editor's note:  After getting your email I went down and saw the sign. It claims FCCHS has the highest ACT scores in the Tri-County area. I have no idea if that is true. I do know that Fox Creek has once again (as they have every year) lowered the total SAT scores for Edgefield County Schools. Maybe they should run an ad that says "Send your kids here, we, with only a minority of students, can lower the total SAT scores of the entire county with your help."

Re: wanted to say that edgefield county is showing how racist it is because when a white boy kills a black woman he gets out of jail and walks away without anything about killing her. I wunder what would happen if a young black man run over some white woman. He'd be in jail and won't ever get out. I called Rev. (Jessie) Jackson myself to tell him about it. There gonna be (heck) to pay. Let mr. white boy get out (of) this one.

Have you heard anything re: Scott Chitty, adamantly opposing the Strom Thurmond HS (STHS) "Express Bus"?  If it can be confirmed, I will actively seek to see him voted out of his position this coming fall.

Yes I have a daughter that rides the "Express Bus" from MMS straight to STHS.  We parents thought it was a great idea since a lot of us are already at either MES or MMS and dropping off kids, so we could also drop off our high schoolers, they could get on the bus and go straight to STHS.

Actually, it was approved because it was a win win situation for parents and for County.  It keeps a lot of parents off the road and commuting back and forth to STHS, and the County saves money on fuel costs because the bus doesn't have to travel all over to pick up kids.  It should not be opposed, but should be used as a model for the rest of the county which allows huge savings on fuel costs, is a lot safer, and takes a lot of traffic off the county roads.  It also helps and saves families money for fuel costs, especially now when fuel is so high.

Moreover, when this came together by the parents getting together, it was also agreed that the parents would pay a monthly fee as well.  So not only is the county saving money, but making it as well.

If Chitty has in fact opposed this-he's finished if I can help it-I'll push real hard to have him voted out.  Figures, when elected officials can't get the job done, but the citizens come up with a plan to save time and money, its opposed.

That bus has gained such popularity that it is being replaced with a bigger bus.

Change?  They want change?  Time for Change?  Sure is! Time to get rid of those elected officials that don't listen to the people who elect them.

Editor's note: I will check into the situation. I would not be surprized if it was true. Mr. Chitty is on the ECBOE for one purpose, to protect Fox Creek. An "Express Bus" would not be a good thing because it would give Merriwether students a wat to attend STH rather than FCCHS.

Scott Chitty needs to be unseated for many reasons. He does not represent the Merriwether area, he represents Fox Creek HS. He has voted with Sallie Cooks and crew more than he has with Covar and Livingston. He votes with Sallie Cooks and in turn the Cooks majority overlooks the many Charter violations of FCCHS in exchange. Quid Pro Quo.

If you are a hardcore Democrat don't read any further. Undecided and Independent voters need to take notice that during this Democratic Convention, very little mention has been made about how to fix the economy, rising gas/oil prices, national debt, etc. So far, the Democrat speakers bash President Bush, take about Change(nothing specific), touchy/feel good personal stories and other dribble which has yet to address how they (Democrats) will fix anything. Granted, President Bush has been a great disappointment, but not without the Democratic controlled Congress and Senate helping put this country in the economic quagmire we are experiencing. Don't forget Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy (communist) Pelosi has stalled any meetings between both parties to vote Yes or No concerning off shore drilling. In the meantime, Mr. Obama wants us to put more air in our tires, and suck it up regarding high oil prices. The Pentecostal preachings of Obama have
appealed to Americans who are looking for a feel-good approach to remedy politics. Americans are Star Struck with Obama and don't want to peel back his thin resume to see what really exists. Unfortunately, Senator (VP pick) Biden is more qualified to be president as was Dick Cheney. We don't need a president to learn on-the-job, but one who is qualified when the race begins. No doubt, Mr. Obama is a great motivational speaker who can make his audience quiver in Ecstasy. A cobra can do the same. A rock star president can not protect us against the bad muslims and other terrorists who want to kill us. We need someone in the White House who will scare the bad guys, not talk feely-good stuff. Adolph Hitler scared my parents generation, and Barrak Hussein Obama scares me.

To the people making all the assumptions about the Daniel Fraley investigation-you are showing just how ignorant you are by the comments you are making. Daniel Fraley is entitled to the due process of the law, whether he is white or black. The investigation is being done by the SC state patrol-it has nothing to do with the sherriff's dept or the town of Johnston. That's how the law works.

As far as Mr. Fraley being released on $1,000 bond-the bond was paid and he was released. If a black or white person is held on bond and can not pay the bond, then guess what, they stay in jail. You are assuming that black people are held in jail because they are black-maybe they couldn't pay the bond and that is the reason they are held there.

I live on McCreight Rd for over ten years, and when I had to go anywhere I had to watch out for drunks walking the road at night. The way I look at it, she should have heard a car coming and knew to get out of the road. This should wake of the ones that walk that road at night from now on. If they would run test on her body I bet they would fine out that she was drinking too. So these people out there talking about black and white need to stop and think about if it was your love one on either side. I am praying for both families.

I have been reading the debate about the "special needs children". How about a definition for  "specials needs children". Is it on about a  economical, social, racial,  educational, or emotional level ? I have a feeling not everyone is talking about the same children.

I think the financial special needs of the school board and rest of the administration is bleeding the the problem. We parents are buying most of our kids school supplies so where is the tax money going?
web posted August 29, 2008

It was not but a few years ago, when a young black man sped through a stop sign crashing and killing a white mother/grandmother in Johnston. Granted, she was in a car, but does that make it so much more different? Someone still died. Does anyone else remember this? The young boy was charged with speeding.  Was this not an issue? My friends went through a tough time when they lost their mother/grandmother. I feel for this situation and both families, but don’t play the race card!!!!  Race would not be such an issue, if people didn’t want it to be. So before you write comments like being white is priceless… think about people like the person writing that … being ignorant enough to make the statement and not being fare enough to look at other accidents that happened. Accidents that were just like this one, but races were reversed.

I know justice will be served, but y’all have to chill out and see what happens. All you guys are doing is stirring up more trouble and both families involved are already hurt enough. Don’t make it worse by calling Jackson. He doesn’t care bout the black woman or anybody for that matter, he just wants his face on TV.

If you check the last two weeks posted in the Crime Blotter, there are 4 criminals that were all "special needs" students at STH. All were coddled and were given special circumstances for their misdeeds at STH. The hid behind the laws for crimes they committed even while they attended STH. One of the thugs was just recently arrested for almost beating a pregnant young girl to death. I'm just happy that we don't have special jail and prison cells for those who were labeled "special needs" in the public school system, unless they can prove to a licensed professional that they are really insane.
web posted August 29, 2008

I think that the original comment about "special needs" students was a blanket statement that is bascially not true. The majority of "special needs" students (90-95%) are a joy to teach and can succeed in the classroom. There is a small and growing perecentage of these students that are highly disruptive, violent, or just can not succeed in a structured environment. This growing percentage hides behind federal and state laws that protect them from any real behavior modification or punishment for their attrocious behavior and incivility. My feeling is that if a student has severe behavioral disorders, then they do need to be placed in a special environment to succeed. It just takes one bad apple for some to disparage an entire population.

Editor's post: I understand the frustration that many of you are having in the death of Ora Mae Coleman. Before you let your emotions get the best of you, let the investigation run its course. Several comments were not posted due to the comments containing content that is against the rules. I will not allow vile comments or threats to be posted.

I know first hand what it is like to be the one driving a vehicle that strikes a pedestrian that results in death. Even though I was cleared of any and all fault (granted, I was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident), it is something that never leaves your thoughts, your memory, and will always enter your sleep via dreams. I have true compassion for both sides.  At this time we do not have all the facts. I suggest waiting until the results of the investigation are released before making any judgments. This is not a "race" issue. Anyone trying to make this a race issue has no compassion, in my opinion, for the family members on either side of the case.

I ask that you pray for all family members involved, black or white. I can assure you, both sides are suffering at this time.

Editor's note: The investigation into the fatality is in the hands of the SC Highway Patrol. The Sheriff's Office has no voice in the matter. It is true that Mr. Fraley was released on a $1,000 bond. The investigation is still underway.

I read yesterday that the only reason that John McCain is hestiant to announce Mitt Romney as his VP choice is that in intense negotiations, Romney is insisting that when McCain-Romney win the election, the oath be given on the Book of Mormon, and not the Bible. Romney insists that the Bible is outdated for its time and that the Book of Mormon is more in tune with the values of Americans.

Editor's note: You and I both know that is not true. But, even if it was, I would rather McCain and whoever he chooses take the oath on a bubblegum wrapper over the Bible used by Obama in Rev. Wright's "I hate America and whitey" church for the last 20 years. At least that is based completely on fact. Can't say that about your comment.

Reflection: The majority of those who receive Child Support through the court system do not even have bank accounts. How can they receive funds electronically? I am not justifying the penalty that is paid; I am just stating what is holding back the centralized system from being put into place. The fight is one over who collects and who gets to put a percentage in their pockets. I agree that the welfare of the children is what's important. Personally, I dont know Mr Spence, but I do know a great deal about the Hunley and the search and recovery efforts surrounding her. Mr Cussler, did not find the Hunley, he came in with the money after the lead archeologist, Mark Newell was let go and "found" it just where he was told to look. So in essence, Mr Cussler "found the Hunley" because his money paid for the rest of the expedition but he did little in the actual leg work to "find" her in the first place. Re:  I happen to agree with the post about the special needs kids slowing down the rest of the class. How can you say it doesn't?

I can say that it doesn't have to slow the class down because I have seen it with my own eyes.  Last year, I had a language arts class that contained five of the highest level students I taught all day, five special education students who needed extra assistance, and about twelve proficient and basic (mid-range) students.  At the end of the school year, two of my students, one from this class and one from another class that also contained a special education student, scored the highest scores in the entire grade in language arts on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Test.  Our grade contained in excess of one hundred sixty children.  The children who achieved these high scores were not special education students themselves, but they were in class with them.  Therefore, I must differ in opinion because my experiences say otherwise, although I do realize that there are special cases that arise where the outcome may not be the same.

"First, it is not a computer program that does the job. A computer program is body of program language that performs a task, or tasks. What is being developed is a computer system, or a mainframe system. This is not cheap, and is a very complex task that cannot be described in the amount of words allowed in this post"

OK, First, I am not stupid. I simply repeated what I was told.-by a member of the State Legislator, Program or mainframe, the verbiage isn't the issue. Its the money! Secondly, SC is one of the last states to go to this system. If our neighbors can figure it out, along with at least 40+ other states, then why can't  SC. The system is already developed,in use, it works, period. That means some company somewhere has developed the mainframe and SC chooses instead to do nothing but make excuses.  Are you saying that its better that SC throw away 11 MILLION dollars each year- and climbing. Personally, I think they could find a better use for our money than sending MORE toward Washington for them to waste. I'd much rather that stay in state and go toward the people of SC,but you would rather argue semantics instead. Big picture=11 million dollars +. Am I the only one outraged that the State chooses to throw this money away? I can say from experience that the centralized system is a MUCH better system than what we have now. Everything is transferred electronically, and you can log in to see what a check posted to your account, instead of being at the mercy of the mail.
But lets worry about if the county doesn't need an employeee instead of taking care of the children.

I do intend to keep my eyes and ears open to what becomes of this case and if that is the only charge this young man ends up with i will offer my advice to the family on what steps to take to insure that this does not get swept under the rug, to include  giving  them all my contact numbers for out side agencies from other states to get involved. This will not fly under the

Editor's note: Mr. Fraley was arrested and charged with DUI the night of the crash. He has been released on a $1,000 bond. The case is currently still under investigation and toxicology reports, I understand, have not been completed. The SCHP can always come back at any time and level additional charges once the investigation is complete. In reality, only two people know what happened that night and one of them is dead. In my haste I forgot to ask what Mr. Fraley's BAC (blood alcohol) level was at the time of his arrest.

I was a diver on the HL Hunley recovery project. See:
http://hometown.aol.com/litespdcom/. Mark was dismissed from the project over controversy surrounding his education,(by Cussler), when Dr Newell was dismissed, money was lost and "NUMA" stepped in to save the day. The ONLY activity Cussler had in finding the HL Hunley was writing the check. He never saw a day in the water or on the boat searching. It's just so he can blow his own horn and sell another book.  If it had not been for Senator Thurmond the State of South Carolina wouldn't even have the Hunley to showcase. Technically, it belongs to the US Navy, since it was sunk during the War of Northern Aggression. The Navy wanted her but also wanted some new nuclear submarines, Senator Thurmond told the "boy" from the Navy . "let me tell you what is going to happen boy, If I don't get my submarine, you won't get yours."  Miraculously,The Navy decided to loan her to the State of SC in perpetuity provided she is open to the public and housed in an indoor facility.  I can see Ol Strom pointing his finger at him now.

What can I do? I live within 1000 feet of proposed site and have been informed that it's almost impossible to stop approval.

Any suggestions?

Editor's note: I would contact the office that sent you the notice and find out what opitions are available to you. There will have to be a public hearing on the matter and you should attend it and voice your concerns and encourage others to do the same, pro or con. Depending on the location on Slide Hill, contact the Building and Planning Department in the county or town.

On Thursday,  September 11th, 2008, an American flag should be displayed outside every  home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it  their duty to display an American flag on this seventh anniversary of one of our country's worst tragedies. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives  on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the  pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our  cherished freedoms.

In the days, weeks and months  following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned  the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism.  Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through  some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in  solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we  can prevail over terrorism of all kinds

The Augusta Chronicle had a front page article concerning 86% of all the students taking the test to be promoted, “FLUNKED”.

Isn’t it great to know that in a few years the Democrats will have these idiots voting for their candidates.

I know there are whites that can’t get out of a rain shower.  But if I had to guess 90% of these 86% that failed are black.  Nowhere in America are schools in such bad conditions.

So cheer up,  Edgefield county schools are only going down the same road.  Probably the state will step in before our (Board of Education) can cause more damage.

Editor's note: Very real changes could take place on the School Board this November. The two seats that could make the most difference are held by Sallie Cooks and Scott Chitty. If Kenneth Collier and Chris Hoffmann were to win the respective seats, the citizens could take back the control of the board of education. I do not get involved in political races, but the school board race is non-partisan and I will be speaking my mind on the matter as the election draws near.

We have a liberal writer explaining how "Jesus Was Dark, Liberal: Why Fear Obama?" and saying that "Jesus was crucified because he was a liberal" and "please see that you need not fear Mr. Barack Obama because of his color or his liberalism and progressive thinking. He is less liberal than Jesus."

So Jesus was black and liberal so we should vote for Sen. Obama because he is black and liberal and praises a communist country. Oh, and he is, after all, a "gift from God" as Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has proclaimed. The same person that banned posters honoring those who died in service to our country removed from the hall of the Congress. I can't recall Jesus jumping on board of the killing the unborn and bashing those who support His teachings. I guess my Bible missed that point somewhere.

Yeah, I can't wait until the liberals take total control of our Congress, the White House, and our country.

On any given day in SC, the SC state CIO's (Computer and Information Office) office deals with over 1000 attempts to hack into one mainframe system of the SC Dept of Social Services to steal Social Security numbers. That's just one mainframe for one agency of the State government of SC. Computer technology and information protection is an expensive business. Just think of all the state agencies in SC that have access to your SSN. Keep that in mind when you bellyache about how your tax dollars are spent. Re: that the reason for SC not having central collections was due to  a lawsuit involving the  company who was responsible for writing the computer  program.

Reflection: First, it is not a computer program that does the job. A computer program is body of program language that performs a task, or tasks. What is being developed is a computer system, or a mainframe system. This is not cheap, and is a very complex task that cannot be described in the amount of words allowed in this post. Computer systems cost millions. There are maintenance costs, testing costs, and upgrade costs for the lifetime of the system. Second, collecting, processing, and distributing funds (Child Support, tax refunds, etc) is a costly business. Banks don't give govts of any size free services. Then, there is the paper to print checks or costs of transferring money to banks through electronic bank transfers. If you own a small business that runs money through checking accounts, banks charge these businesses a fee for these services. The same is true for govts. Also, you have court costs for holding hearings, processing paperwork, etc.
None of these are free and tax collections don't provide enough funds to pay for all these costs. If deadbeat dads don't pay up then the govt must intervene and this costs money. The money has to come from somewhere.

So the State of SC has 11 million dollars to throw away, that's great. and why aren't the legislators yelling about that amount of money? Good ol' boy system in county government. You are elected by the PEOPLE of SC not county employees.- If the system were centralized they probably wouldn't need as many employees in the county. The bottom line is there are children of deadbeats suffering, and this issue is a county job and not the well being of the kids. NOt finding a BETTER system of collection. what's the real problem taking some control away from Liz Goddard? Then she can't play god with her computer system. This is not acceptable on any level, period. But I' sure Uncle Sam says thank you, and the people of SC say thanks for throwing more of our money toward Washington and not keeping it in state to help the kids of SC. I'm sure some of the colleges would love to have an extra 11 million dollars since you are throwing it away. Who knew SC had such deep pockets that we could give away this amount. RE :  Central Child Support collections in SC

Prior to Senator Massey taking office, I had been informed by more than one public official including members of the Judiciary committee, that the reason for SC not having central collections was due to  a lawsuit involving the  company who was responsible for writing the computer  program.  SC was searching  to find a new company to write  a  new program and could not  put the new system to use  until the lawsuit had been settled due to proprietory reasons.  IF SC really wanted to solve this issue, They only need to look to our neighbor to the "North" as a efficient example for collecting child support. As for county government, they will only rule in a parent if "the computer" catches the arrearage, If you  visit the clerks office( not Edgefield)  with a problem they refuse to rule in a deadbeat you unless the computer tells them it is ok.  even though SC law states differently.so , no I have no pity for the counties. The way i see it, the fewer  county employees equals to money saved on salaries and benefits.  Regardless of that, 11 million is a ridiculous amount when you consider we are facing budget short falls I am sure the department of education and department of corrections  would love to have some of the 11 million that is being wasted by the state.. SC needs to stop playing games and resolve this issue immediately.Yet another example of a inefficient State government.

I happen to agree with the post about the special needs kids slowing down the rest of the class. How can you say it doesn't? If they are "special" then it means they are below the rest of the kids in class. There is no way having to deal with them while trying to teach the other kids that it doesn't slow down the class.. I'm not saying they should be in a different school just different classes. I thin(k) the schools put too many kids on the "resource" list just because they ( the students) are lazy and bring in a lot of extra money.

He is a senior this year. He attended The American Legion’s Boy State this summer at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He will graduate this year in the top half of his class and has held a 3.5 grade point average for three years and will attend college in Aiken next year. He is also the most reliable, hard working employee I have ever had. The wonderful teachers and programs in Edgefield County schools have helped make this possible. The tax dollars spent to educate this special needs child to become a productive tax paying citizen are small in comparison to the tax dollars that would be spent to support him the rest of his life on disability. This “special needs” child is one of the most wonderful, beautiful, loving, and intelligent people I have ever met. I am so very proud to call him son. We will both pray for your ignorance and cold heart! You should be ashamed of your self for even thinking such a thing much less saying it.

You know what? No, I do not want women to die by the thousands by going to underground abortion clinics. I want them instead to respect the life they are carrying and stop murdering their unborn. It is the most selfish act . . . To take the life of your child because you were too irresponsible to practice safe sex or do not want to deal with a child. And no, it is not better to end the life than have a child you do not want. Adoption is a beautiful thing and there are massive numbers of people that cannot have a child that would love to have one. And no, I am not talking about abortions that are due to rape, incest and the life of the mother. Those abortions account for LESS THAN 1% of all abortions in the US! Those are medical and extreme issues that still sadly result in the death of a child but the other 99%+ are innocent lives ended because of their irresponsible and selfish parents.  What happens happens. The "wrong type" having them that the ignorant poster mentioned has nothing to do with socioeconomics or black, white, or purple polka dots. It has to do with humanity. It has to do with morals. It has to do with common decency and respect for LIFE. If they aren't going to respect the life of their child then why should anyone respect theirs? Do I want women to die by going to underground abortion clinics? No. Are they putting their own lives at risk in order to KILL their child? Yes. So, if they choose to break the law and do that then you know what? Karma's a (female dog).

Does anyone know if there is a county noise ordinance and what it involves?  I moved to Edgefield a few years ago and bought a house out in the woods for the peace and quiet that is offered in our great county.  However, since I've moved here, my neighbor runs a leaf blower for hours every day!  We have to leave the windows shut even on pretty days just to have some quiet. Is there anything we can do?  I don't like to cause problems, I am just looking for a solution.

Editor's note: The county Nuisance Ordinance can be found here. "§ 91.03 (B) (1)  Any unreasonably loud or disturbing noise that causes material, physical, or mental discomfort or injury to persons of ordinary sensibilities in the immediate vicinity thereof; and any noise of such character, intensity, or intermittent or continued duration which substantially interferes with the comfortable enjoyment of dwellings, hotels, or other types of residences by persons of ordinary sensibilities"

Re: "So, yes, Congress did declare war. "

Please provide a link to the vote on the Declaration of War against Iraq.

Just a link.  No technical explanations.  If you don't have one, just say so.

The bottom line is this.  We went into Iraq based on information most of congress doesn't have the security clearance to see.  They voted to allow the executive officer, who has the information, to decide.  And "the decider" decided to go to into Iraq.

Editor's post. Both times, in 1991 and in 2003, Congress gave their approval to wage war against Irag "(1) SPECIFIC STATUTORY AUTHORIZATION- Consistent with section 8(a)(1) of the War Powers Resolution, the Congress declares that this section is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization within the meaning of section 5(b) of the War Powers Resolution."
House of Representatives (in H.J. Res . 658 of the 101st Congress) and the Senate (in S. Con. Res . 147 of the 101st Congress

The same was declared in 2003 with almost verbatim wording. So, Congress is the "decider" as you say. Unless the Congress approves, the President's powers to wage war ends within about two months. The President, (brushing up on the Constitution here), cannot spend money. Only Congress can. And it costs money to run a war.

Re: I'd like to know how much the State of SC is paying in fees to Uncle Sam for not having the centralized child support system in place.

Answer: This year the State of SC will pay a penalty of approx. $11 million dollars. The penalty amount increases every year. However, the penalty is not the fault of the SC Dept of Social Services. The problem is complicated by the Chief Justice of the SC Supreme Court, Jean Toal. Her office is causing the delay. Her office wants many systems that are decentralized with each county having a system that could somehow be linked to a system in Columbia. The reason; when county court houses collect Child Support they take out a percentage to pay for administration costs. These costs pay for the county to hire workers to collect, process, and distribute the Child Support payments. If the system is centralized, as mandated, then the county govts will not be able to take their cut. County govts are already struggling to balance their budgets. Collecting Child Support adds costs to the court system that must be swallowed by someone. Jean Toal's office feels the
penalty is small compared to the costs that each county would face if they were taken out of the loop. The state has deeper pockets than each county govt. The bottom line is who loses out on the money. Money is always the bottom line to most governmental problems.

In response to the special needs children are ruining education post....

Recently, I met a remarkable 15-year old. He and his family moved to the states only two years ago. Not only did he learn English in 6 months, he won a writing contest, chosen among the submissions of piers also attending high-ranking north-metro Atlanta schools. He is in all AP classes while starting his own newspaper. He is a straight A student who works ten times harder than the few others who are able to achieve these successes. He has received the “I Can” award more than once and now presents it to others. More importantly, he has an amazing strength and joy for life that draws people to him, especially people who have eyes that “see”. He also happens to have cerebral palsy.

I feel for you, because your eyes have been closed by misinformation and perhaps by other “blind” people. It would be helpful to you to study the history of the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Get your facts straight before spreading inaccurate and hurtful information.
Children with special needs have an IEP (Individualized Education Program). This is law. Part of section 614(d)(1)(A) states a requirement of “a statement of measurable annual goals, including benchmarks or short-term objectives, related to: meeting the child’s needs that result from the child’s disability to enable the child to be involved in and progress in the GENERAL CURRICULUM” – not the other way around. If a school is altering a curriculum for the entire school, they are unaware of the IDEA... highly unlikely.

By the way, this law was not created by a bunch of liberals as part of a government plot to make people dependent on the government. This was created by a group of disability advocates made up of a wide range of people from differing backgrounds who shared the same vision. And think about it, the opportunity to receive an education equal to the public gives individuals with special needs, not only their right, but a chance at independence. This means they will be less likely to need government assistance.

Also, if “inclusion” is somehow slowing the rate of learning for the “exceptional” students, it is the fault of a limited mindset. There is nothing exceptional about looking at another human being as less than human. This narrow primitive mindset is not only harmful to the individuals who hold it but to society in general.

I also know a remarkable 8-year old boy. His parents were told he would not walk or talk or even live past age 6. This morning I watched the school bus pull away from our driveway with this miracle second-grader in tow. He is an amazing gift. He has taught me more in his eight-years than I learned in the thirty years prior. God has used him to bring joy to and “open the eyes” of literally hundreds of people.

I challenge you to get to know someone with a disability. Step into their world and recognize the courage and grace it takes to face their daily obstacles. I think you’ll find someone of hero status who does not “dumb down” but raises the bar, for those with the mind and heart to “see”. I pray you will get your sight soon.

Barclay, Holmes, Elmore, Dupuis, Lewis & Shaha, 2006; Elmore, Collins, Lewis & Shaha, 2006), and the overwhelmingly positive attitudinal impacts on both Special and Regular Ed teachers (Barclay, et.al, 2006), little question or controversy remains as to the favorable attitudinal power inclusion provides for students.” (For the complete study go to: For the complete study, here is a link

This is in response to the post saying that folks are ranting about "abortion and other marginal issues". Aren't people lucky that their mothers did not treat abortion as a "marginal issue".  Abortion is not a marginal issue. Granted it is not the only issue, but it is one that goes to the core of a person's world view. It makes a big difference in how someone will look at preserving and protecting all of our lives.

The economy is an issue but it is a complicated one. Banks are failing because they loaned money in an unwise way. People are foreclosing on their homes because they weren't very wise in planning ahead and they got themselves into a mess. Why is that the national government's fault? Where is personal responsibility today? This economy  has a lot of other problems but turning our country into a socialist state will not fix them. Don't forget the principles that this country was founded on.

As far as the schools go, isn't that really a state issue? If one looks at other states who are rated higher that SC they may learn some things. Maybe people need to value education and stress it at home. Maybe children should be raised with goals for their lives.  Maybe more money should go to the schools than to assistance programs for people who should be working. Many people truly need assistance but there are a lot of people who live in a cycle of assistance and they don't value an education in order to seek good paying jobs. They are the first ones screaming when they don't get help from the government. The cycle needs to be broken. It isn't good for anyone. I don't read a lot about the people in Iowa demanding the government to fix everything or condemning the government for not doing things. I am still reading about New Orleans but really don't hear anything about the Midwest an they suffered recently. They had signifi cant damage there too. Maybe they are taking responsibility and working to fix things.

Keep in mind that we have not had another terrorist attack in this country. Do not forget what happened on 9/11. I have a family member who has fought in Iraq. One of the biggest problems for the people serving is the biased news coverage of what is happening there. One shouldn't believe everything they read in the paper or see on T.V.

As far as being used by "the conservative hate machine", please understand that most conservative people really believe in their core that these issues are important. People actually research and learn about the issues they feel strongly about. They look at history and understand the ramifications of a lot of these ideas of "change". They think for themselves and base their beliefs on what they learn. Are liberals being used by the "liberal machine"? One certainly has more opportunity to be brainwashed by them since they control most of the media. I would hope that liberals are studying and learning about the issues. I would hope they are studying history and what happens when "change" takes place. We have too much bureaucracy as it is. Maybe conservatives and liberals need to have more intelligent discussions about the issues.

Then I thought about it and it is the same thing that has been going on for years. Nothing is going to change.  They know they can get away with murder if they wanted to. I appreciate you trying to change things, but its never going to happen.

To all the folks out there ranting about abortion and other marginal social issues...you're being used by the conservative hate machine.  The real issues that matter in this country are a war- possibly a 100 year war,  an economy in decline, people going without healthcare, and an absolutely obscene education system-especially in SC.

Issues such as abortion and gay rights are brought out and flogged every four years by the right to energize and blind their base.  While you're busy frothing at the mouth about the prospects of a BLACK MAN for president, the right wing power elite is laughing all the way to the bank.

Start thinking folks.  Abortions will not stop--you'll only drive them underground and women will die by the thousands.  But maybe that's what you want ?  Isn't it ?  After all, only the WRONG TYPE have them.

Editor's note: The majority of the children killed by abortion each year are black children. If any organized group killed a thousand black kids a year the media would not rest until everyone was jailed. But let the Democrat Party promote doing it through abortion, (killing almost a million black children a year) and 90 to 95% of blacks vote for them in return.
Excuse my language, but, what the hell is wrong with that picture?

I am a teacher. While  I do not teach special ed., I have students with special needs in my classroom. I cannot believe any teacher can feel this way, and I have never heard any teacher express views like this. Maybe she/he needs a special needs child in order to appreciate the difficulties these children face. On the other hand, that would be grossly unfair to the child!

Re: Isn't the idea of all things political starting with "you" based on the ballot box? ",

Technically, yes, however, you can elect my dog as a legislator but until the constituents yell loud enough to make the issue a priority, nothing happens. and the dog can't act to fix it.(yes, he is smarter than the average politician) You can't fix it if you don't know its broken.
I'd like to know how much the State of SC is paying in fees to Uncle Sam for not having the centralized child support system in place. Surely that money could be put to better use, it has to be in the millions. It was suppose to be in place 10 years ago. Make the dead beats pay up then people aren't tied to the state for helping to take care of their children. Then you don't have as many that qualify for EBT or Medicaid. When you have a parent working for a hospital corporation, -one that runs one in the Augusta GA area, -and he refuses to keep medical benefits for his children and the state allows it, so they have to rely on Medicaid, that's a problem. Yell about who gets state aid all you want, but until the people make it an issue for the politicians nothing will ever change- and yes, I have been yelling about it, for 10 plus years .This person has refused to follow a court order and the State Family Court system continues to allow it,  DSS has done nothing that they say they are going to do to help- like show up to court. It isn't an issue anyone wants to take on. Yell with me and make it a priority, let them know that this is not acceptable. and we want change. Then maybe a politician will do something, but until they know its a career killer issue, nothing will change. How much turnover has their been in the State legislature since the federal mandate for child support centralization was passed? How many have done something to fix it? How many know of the problem. - I'm not sure about the turnover but they ALL know about the problem, The people changed, the result stayed the same.

Headlines: Days after he cracked that being rich in the U.S. meant earning at least $5 million a year, Republican presidential candidate John McCain acknowledged that he wasn't sure how many houses he and his wealthy wife actually own.

If I were going to define "elitist" then I would refer to the headline above as the true definition. If you don't know how rich you are, or how many houses you own, then I would say you are elitist. I would consider my self rich if I earned over $250,000 per year, if I continued to live modestly as I do now. My house need a new roof. If I could pay cash for the job, then I would consider myself rich.

Editor's note: Is that "his wealthy wife" bothering you? I mean, how is it Sen. McCain's fault his wife's family is wealthy? How dare he marry her. Your guy sure lives in a house you, I, and about thirty other families could not afford combined and he got it by dealing with a "friend" who is now serving federal prison time for corruption.

And as far as being "elitist", Sen. Obama is quite content to live in a mansion while his brother lives on a dollar a month in a shack in Africa. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think a lot of the homes owned by the McCain's were bought for family members. Get real, surely Obama could get off a few hundred a month to put his brother up in a duplex somewhere.

If this is how he treats "family" I don't even want to think about how he would treat his subjects.

After reading the comments made by the individual about children with special needs, I just have one question.  Do you realize that God does not make mistakes?  He put our children in this world for a specific reason.  One of those reasons is to show that all of God's creations have value, including our children who are not "perfect in every way."  You also need to realize that a person does not have to be born with a disability to acquire one.  God forbid one of your children is in an accident or has an illness that leaves him/her disabled.  I would imagine that you would be one of the first saying " where are the special services MY child needs to reach his greatest potential?"

None of us are perfect...........some of us are just better informed than others.

I represent over 30,000 familes in York, Lancaster, Chester and Chesterfield counties who have children with disabilities and special needs.  Should your writer need further information, please contact us.  We provide an incredible program for children in public schools .  Awareness:  The Keys the Friendship educates typically developing children about their peers with special needs...........adults are certainly invited to attend, and sometimes need more education than the children do.

This is in response to the person that said children with special needs are ruining education.  I pray to God that you are not a teacher.  I have a beautiful son with special needs who happens to be in an inclusion model.  He learns from his peers and his peers learn from him.  He is no more a behavior problem than many of the regular ed students.  Normal children come home with yellow or red faces on their papers.  Normal children go to time out and sit in lunch detention.  Normal children disrupt classrooms.  Normal children fail tests and normal children are retained.  All children are blessings from God and all children deserve a chance to be educated.  These children will grow up and live in the same world and wouldn’t it be nice if they all co-existed as adults in harmony with real friendships and opportunities to help each other through life?  I’m doing my level best to not say the ugly things to you that come to mind.  The one thing I will repeat is, “I pray to God that you are not a teacher!”  If you are, then I pray our paths never cross.

Here are a few excerpts from a study that proves inclusion works.  However, inclusion will not work if teachers with attitudes similar to the previous poster are employed.

Re: Editor's note: You might want to brush up on your Constitutional law. Only Congress can declare war, not the President. You even state the Congress voted to authorize the war. So who is to blame if it is "unjust"?

When did we declare war against Iraq?

I stated the Congress voted to authorize the president to use force against Iraq.  Congress did not authorize a War, or declare a war.  Congress authorized the President to use the War Powers Act to engage Iraq in a military action if the President saw fit.

At the end of the day, Congress authorized the President to take action if he saw fit.  Whatever action taken, was the President's decision.  Clearly the President is to blame.  You can rewrite history all you want... Back to the voting to cut off funding.  How could the Dems in the senate get the debate to stop without 60 votes?  How could the Dems in both houses override a presidential veto without 2/3 majority of congress?

Editor's note: If you want to get technical, Preseident Bush did not need Congress to approve anything because the first Gulf War never ended, only a cease fire was declared and Saddam and Iraq never complied. So, yes, Congress did declare war. Secondly, (and it was discussed before the second phase of the war)
even though President Bush did not need the Congress' approval he did so, twice, and they agreed.

Understand that point, they - congress - agreed. Democrats and Republicans (majority Democrats). The majority in both houses are Democrats. Could they sustain a vote to cut funding for the war? Probably not. But if they really want the war to end, they could still pass the vote to cut funding and go on record as doing so. But they know if they did it would be political suicide. Why? If, as the national media says, the "majority of Americans are against the war". Ah ha.. because the national media is lying.

Even Obama, the Democrat messiah, has backed off a cut and run (surrender) promise.

Wow, I certainly hope YOU aren't in education! How egotistical and snobbish of you to deny a child with special needs the same education as others! I have a special needs child who is participating in inclusion and let me tell you, you have NO clue what you are talking about! With inclusion the resource teacher comes into the classroom and works with the students that need additional help. This DOES NOT affect the education of the rest of the class that may not have learning disabilities. Inclusion allows the regular Ed teacher to teach to the students without disabilities, while allowing the extra help that the children with learning disabilities have. My daughter is not mentally or physically handicapped, but has seizures that has caused some cognitive delays. She needs help in reading only. So you are telling me that she needs to be shipped to a separate facility because her education has to be dummed down? What a moron you are! I can only pray for the students in the school or district you reside in. You dont know their story, and some are even educated, caucasins that need help. The answer you give is much to simplistic, sure the state says who qualifies, and how much they get, its not as much as you think. However, the real problem remains with the agency and their employees that work within the system. DSS needs a complete overhaul, the employees are rude, and the brueacracy that runs that place is a joke. Clean from the top  chief to the janitorial staff, change rules that punish you for working part time or getting child support, and limit the total amount ANY familiy can receive. ENFORCE court orders and help those that need it go to court , and don't take the arrearage as your fees. (if DSS helps to secure back child support they can take EVERY CENT they recovered as their costs of recovery so the child and family get nothing- change THAT, then the people don't qualify for EBT. It took two to bring them into the world, why shouldn't the equally be responsible? SC is a JOKE when it comes to making a dead beat parent pay up or hold them in contempt. Secondly,Get Voc Rehab involved in helping them get training or work with the state employment office to help them find GAINFUL, employement with benefits. Give them priority, and not based on the color of skin but on actual skills. -Whats the line, give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach him to fish, he can eat forever. Anyone that is in education will tell you that "special needs" children are ruining education.  They need to be sent to separate facilities than regular ed because the entire school curriculum and testing is dumbed down to give them an opportunity to pass.  They don't have to follow the same discipline rules (special ed can only be suspended for 10 days whereas a regular ed student has no limitations). They used to attend separate schools until the mid-80's and some group of liberals said that this was unfair and made the students feel inferior.   What a crock!

The latest fad for special ed is called "inclusion"  This is where they take learning disabled kids and place them into regular classes.  This slows the rate of learning greatly and holds back the exceptional
students.  This is just another government (liberal) plot to make people dependent on the Government for everything.

It infuriates me to see people do like the other reader said - have a buggy full of steaks and crab legs and other high priced items that most hardworking folks can only afford on occasions, then they'll whip out cash to buy cigarettes and beer!! The government takes out over $450 every 2 weeks from my paycheck to help pay for this nonsense - and I wouldn't be able to get government assistance if I was dying in the street! The way the system works, it promotes people to just be slack and stay at home and have illegitimate babies! The more children you have and the less income you can account for- the more money they take from us that are busting our butts working everyday!!! It also effects our school system. Most of the children in these homes are born for THAT purpose and so parents with this mentality don't give a crap what they're kids are doing or how they act! Therefor teachers have to spend more time correcting them and less time teaching the children who are there to learn. And so the cycle continues and gets worse every generation! I say get rid of it all together, then that way they'll have to get a job (and appreciate it to keep it- no more attitudes at the drive-thru) and they'll have to be more responsible with their lifestyle like the rest of us!

And if you are using the EBT cards to buy beer and other items that you are NOT supposed to be able to do then you should be taken off the program and get a real job like the rest of us and start supporting your own beer habit instead of all the tax payers supporting it for you.

If your kid quits for whatever reason, why would another sports team want em? They my just quit that sport...haven't you taught your special kid that quitting is not an option? If you are going to go out for a sport then you will finish it until the end...that way your special kid may think twice before going out for a sport. If you continue to let your kid quit everything he/she starts...then as an adult...they will not think twice about just walking out on their job, their spouse or their kids when they become an adult. Quitting is not an option and you need to teach your special kid this.

The Democrats control both the House and the Senate and can cut all funding for the war at any time. Congress is the only body that can fund a war, not the President.

What would happen if you found yourself unemployed, with a family to feed and no other way of getting them groceries? Would you apply for EBT? I don't know the story of the person who was buying steaks, and really don't care. That’s her business. The real question is. Since when should it be against the law for the poor to only eat, bread, hamburger, and spaghetti. Exactly what food items would you limit them to purchasing? After all, they aren’t entitled to the ‘good stuff” they are poor. If we are going to go with that logic than the children getting the free or reduced lunch at school should only eat sandwiches and not the hot meals the “rich” kids enjoy. After all, it’s your tax money feeding them chicken and pizza when you can’t afford to feed your kids that same meal.(same logic)- I know someone with 3 kids in college and she gets 176.00/month. WOW- sure sounds like steak and lobster money to me. Now, average that out over a 30 day period. Need help with the math? We’ll make it easy and say 180.00 instead. 180/30=6.00.  That means the state says you can feed your FAMILY for 6.00/day. Can ONE person eat for 6.00/day? Man I sure wish I got EBT so I could eat that well. The question remains, since when is it and should it be against the law for the poor to be allowed to only purchase certain foods. If we use your logic then anyone that is overweight should get less money too, because they need to lose weight, so why allow them to eat as much as the skinny people. This is the USA and not a communist country. Are you really saying that you want the government to tell us what we can eat? Yeah, that’s certainly the answer, just what we need, more government interfering with our personal business. -They have done so well running the schools.-So and answer must be to let the state DICTATE what we feed our family.

to all people that still can not get DSL internet service, i just want to tell you if you go with the wireless internet don`t go with AT&T because you will not get a good connection so you will need to go with verizon wireless i did and it is pretty fast just thought i would pass this on.

Editor's note: Different providers have better connection speeds depending on the area. What may be best for one may not be best for you. If it were me, I would ask for a 30 day trial period before signing up for a one or two year contract with any company. If DSL becomes available in your area, you could be stuck with the wireless carrier while your neighbors get DSL for a lower rate. Not advice, just something to think about.

Mr. Editor: I googled "oil pipeline in the republic of georgia" and I got one hit that was some sort of fantasy written by member of a religious group in 2004. I have never googled something and got only one hit! I strongly believe you are mistaken. There is no international oil pipeline in the Republic of Georgia, however the oil companies BP and Exxon Mobil wish to build one through RoG not to supply Europe but to transport Caspian oil down to Iraq and the Gulf. This would need to have the countries of Georgia, Iran and Iraq to acquiesce to one company/countries control to acquire the countries of Iran and Georgia. It ain't going to happen.
The war started when the minister of Georgia decided (with US and Israeli help) to invade South Ossetia and run the Russians out of there. The South Ossetians want to stay with Russia and Georgia wanted the disputed territory back in its "fold", and felt certain they were going to achieve this objective after assurances from the US and Israel that Russia wouldn't do anything. Boy, were they wrong! The rest as they say is history. It was the Georgians that started it and the Russians finished it. As of today they haven't left yet due to slowing action from the Georgians ie. they are shelling them as they try to leave even after Georgia signed the cease fire resolution.
This was not an invasion for oil. Russia has as much oil as Saudi Arabia if not more. This was simply a reaction to an invasion of Russian concerns. The US, Israel and The Republic of Georgia facilitated it and Russia finished it.
That's why the Democrats are complaining about overreacting and the current regime which calls itself Republican is wringing its hands hoping no one finds out. Well you just found out.
BTW, I ain't voting for Obama, either, nor am I a democrat. If we are left with two choices, McCain and Obama, I will vote for McCain, the lesser of two evils.

Editor's note: Where to begin? Last item first I guess. It is a shame that we have "two evils" to choose from for President, and I agree with you. I will not vote for McCain, I will vote against Obama.

The pipeline: Point number 1, I am not misinformed or mistaken. From a CNNMoney story 8/12/08 "Oil company BP said early Tuesday that it had shut down the Baku-Supsa pipeline, which carries 90,000 barrels of oil per day through the embattled nation of Georgia, for fear that it could be damaged during the fighting. BP has a 30% stake in the pipeline as part of a multinational venture based in Turkey. The Baku-Supsa line carries crude through the western part of Georgia from the Black Sea."

The pipeline was built to skirt Russia for that very reason, they are the main supply of EU oil, and this would give them almost complete control over the oil and natural gas in the region if they are able to seize the pipeline.

My search resulted in well over 100,000 links to a story that is just a week old.

Once again, the grocery police has reared its ugly little head. I thought we lived in a republic not a communist state  I must be mistaken on that, I thought all people in America were allowed to purchase any grocery item they wished , Obvioulsy I am wrong,   because the grocery police are warning all who have EBT they are not worthy to purchase groceries that do not meet their standards. How dare the clerk allow her to purchase steaks.! Apparently only the ones deemed worthy are allowed to eat steak  and name brand items because they can pay for it, the poor kids waiting at home  aren't deserving enough to eat something other than hamburger meat or hot dogs.  I have a  family court order that states even with child support and part time income I do not make enough to live wihout assistance. but  the state refused  to help me because I received child support. .Columbia punishes those who do not work a full time job if you receive child support or alimony. you want to change something, change that stupid law.Dont punish the kids because Columbia has archaic rules about  what counts as income and what does not.  Child support is not recognized as reliable income by anyone else, yet our state who does not have a central child support collections  system counts it as income. Do you know how difficult it is to find gainful full time employment? My sister has been searching for full time employment for over 3 years.  Then again, its easier to judge people when you sit on your pedestal and have no idea about  the person who is using EBT. How do you know she was not employed? Do you know for a fact she does not work even part time?Do you know if she recently lost her job? no, you just assumed,  .Can you prove that she doesnt pay taxes?or has never paid taxes? everytime she purchases something other than food she is paying sales tax,  so you can rest easy knowing her money spends the same as everyone else.Even the poor pay sales tax.No one has the right to tell anyone whether they are on EBT or not that they cannot purchase a name brand item,or steak if they so chose. If you look at the price per ounce and not just the  price tag, you would know that. How dare those poor people  eat  something other than spaghetti and hamburger helper. I will be sure next time I pray to tell God to please find away to instill in the poor and "pissy" they are not worthy of the same food as all of us but most importanly, I will pray that he please find a way to show those consider them self to be worthy and more deserving  to find true care and compassion for ones fellow man.  Since you found it neccesary to voice your opinion I felt it neccessary to voice mine with biblical references.  can you do the same for your opinion? In case you are not aware, Gluttony and Envy are 2 of the seven deadly sins,

I am FURIOUS and I hope this makes everyone else as mad as it made me. I was at (a local grocery store) Saturday and the woman in front of me had a cart full of steaks, meats, and brand name items we can''t afford on our budget and was paying for it with an EBT card. If that wasn't bad enough the woman had a bunch of cans of cat food and the clerk told her she couldn't use the EBT card for the cat food. This woman told her kid to go and get 10 cans of TUNA to replace the ten cans of cat food she had and the clerk let her do it!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't help but speak up and tell her it was wrong and she told me it was none of my business. I told her it was my business because I was paying for her CAT FOOD and all her FOOD.  Even after the pissy woman left I told the clerk she shouldn't have let the woman do that and she said as long as it was food she has to let her buy whatever she wants on the EBT card. There I was with ground beef and hamburger helper and spaghetti and cube steak in my basket becasue we work for a living and can't afford steaks to eat.

Who can I call to complain? I am SO (darn) MAD !!!!!!!!!

I could not agree with your comments on (Sen.) Obama more. How long do you think it will be before the media starts calling him lord Obama?

Editor's note: I have no idea. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said over the weekend that Sen. Obama was "chosen" by God to be the Democrat candidate and he was "blessed" by God. Taking into account that Sen. Obama and his campaign has stated that Jesus would vote for him, it may not be too far off.

I have a hard time buying that claim however. "Jesus loves the little children, all the little children of the world" as the song goes, but Sen. Obama supports killing them in, and out, of the womb. I can't speak for Jesus, but, call me crazy, I have a feeling that killing babies would not draw the support of Jesus. Beelzebub maybe, Jesus... not so much.

The article from Chris Dinkins was very well written.  It was a reminder of why teachers teach.  One thing that I feel is very Important to the teacher and to anyone in any profession is ‘attitude’.  Attitude can affect how successful on unsuccessful you are in any profession.  If a teacher goes in with a positive attitude and maintains that positive attitude, they accomplish so much more than the teacher with a negative attitude.  Some students face nothing but negative attitudes in their home and you may be the only positive influence they have.  I challenge all teachers in our school system to work on their
attitude and pass that positive attitude on to the children in the classroom.  It will make a total difference in how each day turns out for you and possibly how each student turns out in the future.

If you watched the Saddleback Baptist church debate Saturday evening between Senators McCain and Obama it should be obvious who is the most experienced in dealing with national situations such as pro-life, off shore drilling,  continued National Security, no more taxes and decisive verses full of BS. I don't expect the mesmerized Obama followers to ever change their position, but I believe if the "Obama Man Behind the Wizard Of Oz" curtain were revealed for his real socialist agenda, some potential voters may come to their senses. Obama is a good snake-oil salesman who is good at wooing people in need of a messiah. He can easily fit into the Mt. Cannan church with Rev. Brightharp and woo the multitudes. His liberal quasi socialist/Marxist socialist preachings should be enough to scare voters away. Obama wants you and I to pay more taxes to support his many social programs which include handing out more money to those many unmarried women with children.
Look around in Edgefield county alone, and you will see the many voters who will support Obama because of his Pro-Charity Programs which are funded off the backs of those who work. And if you are a small business owner, Obama has a tax plan that will run you out of business (check it out). The laundry list of Obama initiatives is endless as it will 'Change' our lives into a militarily weak country, a heavily taxed country, panders to the poor and those who hang out in front of Monroe Kneeces' liquor store, and will lead the world by killing unborn babies. John McCain may not be the best opponent against Obama, but he at least represents what 50% of Americans want, and that is Duty, Honor, Country. Obama's past is questionable at best and has Islamic beliefs that should scare any Christian into church. Obama is a baptised Christian from a church where hate was a preaching standard. Something doesn't add up with Obama. Many believe he is the anti-christ.
I believe he is an educated elitest anti-American who will weaken and over tax this country if elected.

Re: cleaning crew

Why do they have to be told everything to do?  They are hired to clean. They are not to wait until told or until there are five Slivers of trash on the floor, or until you sit your trashcan outside the door so they can see it needs emptying.  I repeat, they are hired to clean.  No one tells me answer the phone, it’s ringing or wait on that customer at the door.  The owner needs to be told to talk to his crew and tell them to clean.  Period!!!!  They are paid for a service and they are not all giving it.  Direct all complaints to the owner and if he doesn’t replace the one not doing his/her job, then get another company.

Editor's post: Obama July contributions: “The 65,000 new donors to the Obama campaign demonstrate just how strongly the American people are looking to fundamentally change business as usual in Washington. We are proud of the millions of volunteers and more than two million donors to the Obama campaign who will provide the backbone of our campaign to put America back on track and reject the old politics and failed Bush policies, which is all John McCain is offering,” said David Plouffe, campaign manager of Obama for America.

Really? Why, where is the press on the illegal contributions flowing in to the Obama campaign from other countries, not America, to set these records? Oh, and there is the new Obama children's book (bible?). Quote: "Even God himself talks to Barry while he's in church on Sunday, telling him: 'Look around you. Now look to me. There is hope enough here to last a lifetime." It gets better, "Ever since Barack Obama was young, Hope has lived inside him. From the beaches of Hawaii to the streets of Chicago, from the jungles of Indonesia to the plains of Kenya, he has held on to Hope. Even as a boy, Barack knew he wasn't quite like anybody else, but through his journeys he found the ability to listen to Hope and become what he was meant to be: a bridge to bring people together."

Yeah, no need waiting around on Jesus to return, the Democrat messiah has arrived. Funny, the children's book never mentions that Obama went to Rev. Wright's "church" for 20 years (and he gave more that $20,000 to Rev. Wright in one year alone) while he preached whites were the devil and proclaiming "G-D America", or that both his parents were muslims. (Yeah, I know, Obama and his "never been proud of America wife" are 'Christians'.) Even Obama speaks as if he is holy.  "... a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany ... and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama" - Barack Obama - Lebanon, New Hampshire. January 7, 2008.

Oh, don''t foget Obama this weekend him saying his support for abortion and refusing to provide care for babies that survive an abortion (let them die) is a question that is "above his pay grade". I guess he is passing that question on to God, the only higher authority than himself.
I guess we should all bow to Obama  the chosen one, the anointed one, the Democrat''s messiah.

It was another great crowd on the Square Friday for the "Horton" movie night.  Thanks to all the volunteers, the Town of Edgefield, the community and most of all the dedicated members of the Edgefield Community Development Association (ECDA.) For those of you that do not realize, the ECDA consists of your local merchants.  Not only do they maintain their own small businesses, but they work together to bring the community fun times such as the downtown movie nights on the square.  Certainly these events are sponsored by companies or the Town of Edgefield itself, but it is the hard working people of the ECDA that makes sure these events run smoothly.  They are the ones to coordinate the activites, the concessions, the movie rights, the marketing, the volunteers and so much more!  So, PLEASE let's all remember to shop local and support these merchants. And, the next time the ECDA plans an event that promotes the merchants, such as the Downtown Shop-Around's or Holiday Open Houses, we need to come out to support them in the same record numbers!

Re..Whoa mule back up.

Isn't it sad that you go into a relationship that says,if it isn't what I want I'm not married to him so it will be easier to walk away. If we get married then I have to go through a divorce. He must have the same thoughts. If you love a person , you go into a relationship that says we are committted to each other to make a life together as a couple forever . Marriage is making the public statement that you stand together. It also makes a legal one. Go ahead and live together. Just hope he doesn't find someone he likes better down the road. He won't have to go the trouble to divorce you. He can just clean out the bank account and move on. I still say the people teaching our children should be held to a high standard as we should ourselves. The problem with our society today is there are no morals or high standards. We feel guilty about what we do so we find excuses to make it right. That's all I have to say on the matter. You can take it anyway you like.

I think the problem is with you. Unless you have back problems, you need to bend down while (sitting) in your chair at your desk, and pick those staples up. I know we pay city and county taxes to pick up our trash, but come on staples off the floor. What percentage of tax dollars do we pay this individual to pick up your staples?

The individual was requesting that the floors be vacuum, trash picked up, bathroom be cleaned, occasional rug shampooing, (is once a year too much?), dusting office area. I think that person reported that information to the right person, which should be the County Administrators Office. May be if the clean-up person come to the site to be cleaned before 5:05pm, when the office is closing, then just maybe they can tell them what needs to be done. This has been an ongoing problem for years, poor cleaning services. I retract some of that statement. When Ms. Lee cleaned, the offices were vacuumed, dusted, trashed picked up, even did things she did not need to do, where are the Ms. Lees
and the other guy (whose name slips my memory). If the county can see its way to pay a descent salary, like $6.55 an hour, oh wait, that is what they are suppose to be paying any way (my bad).

Why don"to you just let the cleaning company know the problem and stop talking about what is done in your office. If I remember correctly there are 11 buildings to be cleaned, not just the main building, in which everyone knows is your office, being the "MAIN OFFICE" will be cleaned properly. I got an idea, WHY NOT ASK THE OTHER BUILDINGS ABOUT HOW THEIR OFFICE IS CLEANED?  I just bet you will get the same of similar response. Just for "Sh and Grins" try it, and see what happens.

CALLING ALL PARENTS WHO CARE ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN:

This past week my husband and I went to a viewing of a 14 yr. old little boy.  He happened to be the son of of a man my husband knows.  As we approached the funeral home I witnessed many young kids that were standing about the place.  We had no idea what had happened to this boy---I prayed that it was a freak illness or maybe a car accident.  We stood in line which felt like an eternity and finally reached his family.  As I walked up to this boys brother he was standing next to the open casket of the this beautiful Young boy. My husband and I gave our respects and then exited the building.  I was quite upset, for I have a son the same age.  There was a woman standing outside the building and I could not help but to ask what happened to this poor unfortunate family---she replied that she was not sure, but she new it was a gun shot to the head.  I was devastated!!!  I could not wrap my mind around what I had just heard.  A year ago my sweet daughter had lost a beautiful friend to suicide (in this very town) and it was very hard for me to accept that this is what had happened to this boy.

My husband took me to the car---I saw him stop a young man in the parking lot...they stood and talked for a while and I saw that the young man was very upset.

On the way home I asked my husband what had happened between him and the young man and he told me that he asked him if he knew the deceased boy--he answered" yes sir, he use to come to listen to my band, he liked my band.  He came to see my band just Friday night and I met him after we were done playing---he said to me watch this---I have something to show you--he pulled out a pistol, put it to his head and pulled the trigger, I told him that he better never do that again---that he is going to kill himself---he laughed and then walked away".   My husband told this boy to please never do anything like that----It hurts so many people and leaves them feeling empty and confused.

My plea to all parents, guardians, and caretakers is that you keep any and all weapons from children----or teach them to respect the dangers and most of all---Give them all the love you can possibly give them.  Children are only given to us as a gift from God, because he trusted us enough to guild and protect them like he does for us.   GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!

Editor's note: I have not run the numbers, but I believe the number of violent crimes continues to rise.

I pity the poor child, senior citizen, rabbit, turtle or any other innocent bystander that crosses Penn St., when them P-O-L-I-C-E men speed by, at all times of the day without their lights on..  whats up with that??

Editor's note: On Thursday night they were chasing a man that ran from police, passed a car while running a stop sign, speeding throught the town square, and leading them on a chase to Crest Road, where he was eventually arrested. Michael KcKelvin, 45, is being held on $13,500 in bonds after being charged with DUI, 4th or higher, driving unde suspension for DUI, 2nd, and failure to stop for blue lights.
I have no idea when the incident you are speaking of took place.

I would like to think that you would be greatful for the county making provisions for another medical facility.
If you have visit the Medical Clinic that we presently have, then you should be aware of the long waiting period.
The new facility will eliminate at least a third of that problem. I do not know about you but when I visit the doctor if I am ill, I do not want to be waiting for over two hours to see a doctor. Even if you make an appointment there is still at least an hour wait, so come on now  "STOP" your complaining about a new facility. WE NEED THAT OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And as far as the new/old doctor. That is my general practitioner, which I like very much, and no matter where she goes, I will follow.  So "SHUT UP" and be thankful that the the doctor is staying in the county. Most good doctors we get, leave. And when they leave this takes the money out of the county, because if they are good, even you will go to another county.  We have complained for years about the medical care we were getting, now that there are good doctors in the county, people like you will caused them to leave, hence causing the county to still be under a dark cloud of poor medical help.  If you do not want to go to the new office, do not go. It would probably be better if you do not go, because individuals like you will find something wrong with the doctor and the office. Not realizing noone is perfect, guess what not even YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As fall approaches, the Fox Creek football coach continues a tradition of his stellar record.  FC scrimmaged Curtis Baptist last week and once again FC scored 0 points while CB scored 12.  It appears that with all the recent activity at the current location, coach has been given a "private" trailor for his office.
While some may consider this a status symbol, others suspect that it's a method to roll his carcus out after another losing season.  The only thing that would be left is the stains of the chewing tobacco in the clay.

I want to encourage readers who think they might qualify for DSL service to actively pursue by phoning the local AT&T service manager.  The internet information about qualifying numbers is NOT reliable.  I live on Townes Rd (about 2 mi south of Sportsman Corner) and have enjoyed DSL for about 2 years--however, an internet check of my number never indicated that it qualified for DSL.  I only found out that I qualified because I had 2 numbers going into the house (one was a dedicated modem line) and my alternate number showed up as qualified for DSL.  A call to the 800 number for Bellsouth did not help, since they apparently only checked by the same internet process that I had previously used.  It was only because by modem line showed as a qualified line that I was able to make any progress.

Of course, after getting DSL, I no longer needed the modem line, so dropping that line paid for the DSL.  After hearing my story, other neighbors also were able to get DSL service, but only after somehow getting in contact with the longer service manager.  Stay after them and good luck to all.

Editor's note: Wireless service for broadband is also said to be available in the area from AT&T and Verizon.

Yet another example of our inefficient government at work. Here is what transpired: Tuesday TB skin test, Nurse to patient, return Thursday afternoon to have it read.   Arrive 2:00pmThursday afternoon, wait 25 mins,  no one acknowledges presence, track down a employee, I need this test read, Oh,, the nurse who reads those is off on Thursday, you will have to return Friday. No, my report date for college is Friday, I need it today. After  being sent to 3 more employees, we find a nurse who can read it.Only to be told, NO you had a Tetnaus shot not a TB skin test, theres nothing to read, NO, he had a TB skin test, you are wrong, All I need is you to look at his arm and sign his paper, after going back and forth with her about the difference between a TB skin test and Tetnaus shot, nurse finally reads chart. OH, all you need is your TB test read, I can do that. looks at arm.  signs the paper and we leave  after going round and round with them for over an hour..All because they didnt bother to lookand read  the chart. Apparently the state of SC should require a literacy exam to become employed, its obvious the ones I have had the misfortune of dealing with do not come close to meeting that requirement. And we wonder why the state has a budget deficit? I can give you a reason why, there is a complete lack of common sense at all levels of government.whats more troubling is this level of customer service is  acceptable by the state becasue its always been  done that way.. its time they stand up for the citizens and tell them a lack of response to clients is no longer tolerated. its time someone changed the norm.this lack of response and caring is no longer acceptable on any level of customer care.

And to answer your question, Yes I do work in an office. The difference is I speak to the people that clean my office and they are great at meeting my expectations. There are many things in the county budget to be concerned about.  Contracts on cleaning the county buildings are a great concern.  It is the tax dollars of the citizens and property owners that pay for this service.  The building at the site of the old Senior Center is not cleaned and maintained as it should be.  The new cleaning contractor(s) do not clean the bathrooms except on the occasion of a blue moon or complaints filed.  They do not mop the floors (tile).  The do not vacuum the offices on a regular schedule (at least weekly).  They are not any better than the last contractor.  The public that comes in this building deserve better consideration and treatment than the cleaning service that is rendered.  Some of the same County Councilmen that are asking for four year terms are the very ones that voted to eliminate part-time custodial staff one year ago.  As was said by another blogger, “out of sight, out of mind.”  The professional staff members of the various agencies that work in the building and their agencies pay rent to the county deserve better service.  It would even be nice if the leaks in the room and down the walls could be repaired.  Be careful talking about the wonderful service that is provided for the courthouse and administrative offices because the rest of the county buildings go lacking.

Why do they (Edgefield County Council) want to have 4 year terms if it is always voted down? Why waste the money?

Editor's note: Because two years is not long enough for voters to forget how often they get shafted. I guess the County Council feels if they stick it to the people in the first part of the longer term voters will forget in four years and there will not be a repeat of trying to unseat four of the five in one election with two-year terms. Rather than realize that if four of the five are sought to be unseated being an indication of voters being unhappy with the direction they are taking our county, they just want to extend how long they can stay in office.

In full disclosure, my wife, Genia Blackwell, who is unopposed in the Merriwether District 5 race would be one of the first to serve a four year term. Merriwether is one of the highest volume voting areas and the three top vote getters would get the first four year terms. We will both, as well as several family members, be voting against the four year terms.

As I have said countless times before, if it is good enough for the US and State House seats, it is good enough for our local county leaders.

In 30 days, Gamecocks play Jawga. I can't wait.  Living down here gives you another perspective. I can't stand Jawga, especially their fans. I respect Coach Richt and I like (C.J. Byrd from Old Macedonia), but they both are too good for them mud eating dawgs....

Anyway, FYI, I was a paid staffer on the 1978 Re-elect Thurmond Committee. I worked full time for 13 months. Lee Atwater hired me who I met in a a poli-sci class we took together at USC. I also integrated Mrs. Mary T. Tompkins 5th grade class in October 1965. I was the only little black dot at Edgefield Elem. the whole year.

I drove Sen. Thurmond around in my car during all over the state in 1978.  I probably would not have had that chance in 1948, but in 1978, I found the Senator as a man who gave me my first job out of college. You can make out that what you want.  He told me a lot of things as we rode around. He told me that he was good friends with my great grandfather and they used to go bird hunting. I've heard family stories to back up that claim. My great grandfather died 5 years before I was born so I don't know.  Mrs. Tompkins knew him, too.  She mentioned it the first day I set foot in her classroom. I will never forget that day. That's when I met Greg Anderson.  We've been good friends since.

Senator Thurmond was a man from Edgefield County. I don't' know how you can quantify that.  He was also a South Carolinian, a great South Carolinian. His rhetoric didn't always line up with his private actions. I think he was morally a conflicted man (and his private life sure bear some of that out.) I also think he was very adroit and deft politician given South Carolina politics in the last century.

I have no personal issue with Strorm Thurmond and in my mind, he would do far better than my college classmate Lindsey Graham. I don't know what's wrong with Lindsey or Saxby Chambliss for that matter.

Anyway, keep up the good work

Editor's note: Lindsey Graham will not get my vote this year. I just can't take his limp-wristed crap anymore. I think he's been spending too much time with Barney Frank.

One of the reasons our youth are so sexually active at very early ages is that we don't have standards anymore. We aren't ashamed of living together before marriage or ashamed of having illegitimate children. It's not ok even if everyone is doing it.And it's not ok for our childrren to see it in the very people that are supposed to lead and influence them in the right directons.

Re Editor's note: "Granted, with John McCain falling into the liberal "global warming" fraud he may be just as dangerous. It's a sad day when America has to choose between a Marxist or a liberal for President."

Reflection: Your blatant campaign of disinformation and nonsensical editorial is really sad and pathetic. Maybe global warming has not affected the residents of Edgefield county yet; but, it will eventually. Look around and notice the trees that are dead from acid rain, and disease that is caused by the change in temperature and atmospheric conditions. You really need to get your head out of your rectum and open your eyes. Ignorance breeds more ignorance, and you are breeding at an exponential rate with your rhetoric.

Editor's note: Global Warming is a hoax, temperatures have been falling in the last three years, not rising. When I was a teen "global cooling" was all the rage by the leftists in America. "Acid rain" killing our trees? What have you been smoking? Oh if we can just elect the savior Obama the ocean waters will recede and the world will heal... Obama said that.

"Global warming" is just another scam by communists and leftists to restrict and try to stop capitalism (you know, that freedom filled thing that has made America the great Republic it is). Please tell me where all these SUV's and industries were when the Ice Age ended due to... ummm... GLOBAL WARMING? Where were all the same when the Little Ice Age occurred around the 14th century? Who has whose head up their "rectum"?  Take a history class for Pete's sake.

But, you are in good company with Obama. The Communist Party USA has even come out supporting your chosen one. The same Obama that will find any excuse not to meet with military families in Germany or here at home. He skipped out on meeting with about 6,000 military families in Texas for a "previous commitment", a vacation in Hawaii. Maybe he can get that pesky forged birth certificate thing resolved while he's there.

What a great American.

Oil prices are the lowest they have been all year but we keep paying gas prices that are set on prices from last week. It's not the oil compaines raping us it's the gas stations.  They raise the prices 20 cents the day oil goes up a $1 but when it comes down $35 the price drops a penny.

Editor's note: There will be no stability in gas prices until the Presidential election is over. And depending on who is elected, prices will either soar or drop. Obama wants to take money from the American oil compaines for "give-away" checks to people who do not pay taxes (remember, companies do not pay taxes, people do in the way of higher prices) while giving a pass to Arab Muslim oil countries. Granted, with John McCain falling into the liberal "global warming" fraud he may be just as dangerous. It's a sad day when America has to choose between a Marxist or a liberal for President.

Oil prices are falling due to the ban on US offshore drilling set to expire shortly. OPEC is dropping the price to try to keep American companies from drilling our own oil. Twenty years ago we imported less than 35% of our needs, today we import almost 80%.

Democrats prevent new refineries and exploration of our own oil reserves making us even more dependent on Arab oil. I'm having a problem remembering who financed the 9-11 attacks. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, and other OPEC Nations? And Obama and Democrats want to give them more of our money?

I would like to remind some of the people that read this site and send in entries to Wandering Minds to be cautious in your bashing of Sen. Obama as a man with racist tendencies.  I am not writing to sway people to one side or the other; however, to the people that call his preacher racist or believe that he is against the white man, remember that we in this county have honored and held a man in idolatry for years that was much worse than Sen. Obama.  The following quote was from a man that we named our high school after and continued to elect in office for over 40 years.

In one 1948 speech Strom Thurmond said: "I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigra [or perhaps "negro"] race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches."

Just remember this when you talk about how much you hate or disapprove of bigots and racists...because the actions of the people in this county do not show disapproval for one of the biggest racists in the history of our country's government!

Editor's note: Ah... the "everyone does it" defense. Nice. It's the Bill Clinton is OK boinking an intern because, "everybody does it". Oh, and as far as Strom Thurmond being a racist... he seemed awful fond of the mother of his black child. He never married until she died.

Give him a chance to do the job he was hired to do!
If you talk to most preachers, teachers and other high ranking (heck everyone) has something there not proud of.  We all go through trails and make mistakes, hopefully the end results is we gain wisdom from them.
As far as the example he set for the students, well, that should start at home.
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it", Proverbs22:6.
If that child makes another decision , then that is theirs to make and they will ultimately suffer the consequences.
It may not be easy for parents and adults to except, but we can only do what we know is right and then it is up to the children.
And I think that is enough said!

Dusting what, the cleaning person is not to dust your personal space or even pictures of your family at or around your desk nor can thay dust your desk if they unable to see it. But in general dusting is not done in the work place like at home, no pledge just a feather duster. I cannot receive unemployment or I lose all assistance. I have been insulted by DSS ( Aiken County) on more than one occasion, this last time I was told if I didnt have so many children by different fathers thay could help me. I have 3 kids , all from the same father to whom I was married BEFORE the children came along. This is not the first time I have been insulted by this agency, yet the same people remain in charge. Its time for Aiken County DSS to clean house and employ people willing to do their job wihtout making pithy, insulting  remarks to clients. I filed a complaint and it was completely disregarded.  No one has contacted me about my complaint at all. I have been working tirelessly with Senaor Masssey, but he too meets nothing but roadblocks.  Obviousy SC DSS needs to be reorganized or at the very least the local office needs new management since they obvioulsy are not capable of helping the people of Aiken and  Edgefield County.. I have since reached the conclusion that the reason I cannot find full time employment is I enjoy working, and I take pride in my work , but the biggest reason I cannot find a job is I do not meet the stupid and lazy factor that is required to be employed by the State of South Carolina. You can preach about funding cuts, but that has nothing to do with treating someone with common courtesy and respect. The children and citizens  of South Carolina deserve a department that will employ people who CARE about the clients that come through the door. I never dreamed I would be in this situation, its nice to know when you need help,SC will leave you starving and unemployed all because you receive  300 dollars a month in child support. Its time the state legislature Do something about this agency and they can start with  Aiken County.

You can’t speak for other agencies because you’re getting a proper cleaning. But I noticed you didn’t say anything about dusting, which was one of the things I also asked about.

You have the nerve to call me a slob when you don’t even know me (by the way, I’m the one that keeps up the office, when it’s not being cleaned) I sweep, dust, and pick up unwanted paper and even staples. You have the man on his hands and knees pulling out staples that you dropped- cleaning up after you, (I would boast about him also). Who’s the slob now?  Even I haven’t stooped that low…

This cleaning company operates on the theory of “out of sight, out of mind” -- It is very difficult to supervise when there is no supervisor or someone acting in that capacity.

Why has the Edgefield County Hospital gone to the expense of sponsoring a "new" doctor when she was already in the area for over 10 years?  Was it necessary for the hospital to incur the expense to advertise for its "new" doctor?  Haven't the physicians in Edgefield County, who are not operating a practice owned by the hospital, been referring patients there already??  Why did the Edgefield County hospital purchase a house and ACREAGE (with fencing for livestock) in Ridge Spring to open as a outlying office... only to shut it down almost immediately?  Is the hospital prudently utilizing funds it receives from our taxes?

Editor's note: Is advertising a bad thing? It brings you local news for free.....

Comment about the new STHS Principal not being married before the birth of their child …….. What business is it of yours anyway? What gives you room to judge someone else’s emotions and feelings? Do you have special powers?  That is a very personal decision for anyone and who are you to judge? I am so tired of so many people in this town judging others when they need to look inside and take care of their own business.  And if you are worried about the example it will set, well, what kind of example are you setting by “fishing” into someone else’s business for your own benefit? What is there to gain?  If I was you I would worry about the example you are setting.

If people would mind their own business and just tend to their own, this country would be a better place, this town would be a better place and everyone living in it would be better off!

Not really a big deal I can guarantee that there will be AT LEAST 4 pregnant girls at STHS this year. If you want to look at it your way that fine, but how about a new prospective… He did marry the mother of his child. Now-a days people get knocked up and never marry, the kids don’t know their father, and we have to support most of them with our taxes. I think there is a positive view to all of this and he should talk to the students about it. I say good for him. Quit looking for negative things when you don’t even know someone.

Yes, I too think it is sad that law enforcement is hired to monitor a church function.  Let me give you a different perspective.  As a grief stricken, soon to be former member of the organization, in all of my 30+ years attending this church, we have never had an unruly meeting. We may disagree but  not to the point where things were out of order.  I think the "reverend" is using the services of Edgefield's finest to manipulate the congregation.  He uses law enforcement to rally his followers.  His followers must "protect" the pastor from people that have worked with him for all of his years there. It is ironic that the "pastor" thinks that he needs protection. Some of his followers are quite familiar with law enforcement as some have had some difficulty with the agency in the past.  Could it be that they follow the "pastor" because they are beholden to him for some "favor" done for them in the past?  He tried to intimidate one minister Friday by threatening to take his ministerial license away.  Who knows what things he may be holding over some of his followers. Some just follow because they are related to him. Sad but true.

Just found an interesting tidbit on our new principal . . . Go to The State and you will see that Mr Schilit and his NEW wife, Margaret Britt, just got married in June of THIS YEAR, 2008. They have a 3 year old daughter and were living at the same address when they applied for their marriage license. So glad to see that the school board is putting morals at the helm of our High School! Makes you wonder if he got married to make himself look better on paper. Also makes you wonder what kind of morals he is going to hold the students too!

Editor's note: How do you know the child was not from a previous marriage? Not defending anyone, just asking the obvious question. The door is open on the living arrangements.

This is in response to the Edgefield County “one man cleaning crew”… I work in the courthouse and I know what was done before this new company came in and what is being done now.  The new guy that comes into our office does a better job in one day than the old crew did in a week.  He empties the trash every day, he vacuums every day, and on Friday he was in our office on his hands and knees pulling the staples out of the carpet.  He works very hard in our department and I was glad for the change.  Maybe if you weren’t such a slob his job wouldn’t be so hard.  Clean up after yourself and stop complaining.  Just be glad he is working to make a living instead of mooching off the government like so many others.  Try being nice to him instead of putting him down.

Why does the school district spend so much money feeding those that can afford to buy their own lunch when they say they are broke?  Under the Freedom of Information Act, would they have to disclose how much is spent on food if requested?  I think all that money would be better spent in the classroom!

Editor's note: Yes, the funds spent on breakfast and lunch is public record. However, "free" breakfast and lunches is a draw for more federal money. There is no such thing as a "free lunch" and it just raises our federal taxes. And trust me, it takes four times the money, if not more, to run the program than to fund it. Elect Obama and see how much "free health care" costs taxpayers.

I saw where more of the Rouse boys were locked up this weekend in the big bruhaha in the hood. Why do they keep letting these thugs out of jail to run their gangs? Everybody that was out there should've been arrested and thrown in jail and lose the keys. Another family thug Ronnie is supposed to be in jail but he's still running the streets too. Maybe we need to clean out the PD and put in some real police that will keep these thugs off the streets. THIS IS (BS)!!!!

Editor's note: There were 150 people or more involved in the Friday night melee. The jail holds about 80 people and has around 55-65 that are being held long-term for serious crimes. Where would you put them all if they were arrested? Of the three arrested Friday night, the Rouse brothers are still being held awaiting formal charges and Laprintise Williams was released on bond for receiving stolen goods less than $1,000 on Sunday. Just under $1,500 in goods were stolen and just over $700 were recovered at the scene of the event. I do agree that more should be charged in what transpired.

In regard to Ronnie Rouse, he was being held on a bench warrant (no bail) until a judge in McCormick lifted the warrant. He failed to apprear for sentencing (5 years for crack cocaine trafficking 2nd offence). He is now facing a 3rd trafficking charge upon his last arrest. The police can only make the arrest and put them in jail, it is up to the judges to keep them there.

On August 4, 2008 during the Fox and Friends morning show on Fox network I was stunned to see our military disrespected BADLY by the female show host.

There had been a Humvee destroyed the night before in Garmsir, Afghanistan.  Two Marines and one of Fox's cameramen were inside the Humvee.  They did a live report from the imbedded reporter who is himself a retired Marine Colonel.  Colonel Oliver North.  To introduce the report Gretchen Carlson said and I quote: "Another of those PESKY IEDS has exploded".

Now to me PESKY is a housefly not a BOMB ! Colonel North reported that their cameraman did in fact help get one Marine out of that vehicle.  It was portrayed as if he acted alone.  In fact he was one of many that helped, he was not acting alone.  The other helping Marines were not mentioned.  Okay an oversight maybe.  Oh but that one Marine DID LOSE HIS LEG.  PESKY, huh?

My point is the use of the word PESKY.  Many Marine families are hurt and offended by this use.  There are over seventy complaints about it on a internet BLOG where Marine families get up to date information.  ( link below)  Marines are risking their very lives and she thinks IEDs are PESKY???

the report itself  Breaking News | Latest News | Current News - FOXNews.com

From the 'stan : Jacksonville Daily News

As you can see MANY families have emailed Fox or have called asking for an apology.  After five FULL days NONE of use has received a response, nor has there been a public explanation or apology  No one is mad at Fox network.  Fox has been good to the military in it's reporting.  We are angry at GRETHEN CARLSON.

I personally have emailed or called Colonel North, Colonel David Hunt, Fox executives, Fox and Friends morning show.  Nothings seems to get their attention.  I wonder if MSNBC knows of this??  CNN?

It’s a shame the county had to get rid of the last crew for not cleaning and now they’ve hired another crew that’s doing the same thing. We need more done than just emptying the trash. How many times have your office been dusted, vacuumed/swept since July? Heck, how many times has the trash been taken out in the past week? Something needs to been done about them getting paid and not doing their jobs.

Editor's note: I do not have this confirmed by SCDOT, but from what I see taking place it is being marked for paving. It will just add to the draw of motorcycle riders to the raceway once it has been resurfaced. Since the repaving of Briggs Road there have been three wrecks, all related to speed. I can see the numbers being greater on Woodlawn and Deep Step Roads once completed. I guess if they would repave Garrett Road the entire racetrack would be complete.

I am the young lady that was assaulted in class. I appreciate everyone’s comments. I wish I had this much support back then. Y’all are right, there is more to the story. The sheriff’s department did know about it and he was arrested. Once he made bail he was back in school and he found me that day in gym class. Luckily, nothing happened I just left class. That was the day (I mentioned before) my mother pulled me out of school. The basketball coach he the… nerve to call my parents and ask them if they dropped charges the young man could play in the game that week. The school board knew about everything that had happened. They wouldn’t pull him out of school because he was a resource student. The “resource student” was 19 in the 9th grade. All he was to them was a basketball star. When he finally went to court the judge placed a restraining order against him which meant he couldn’t go to school because that would violate the order. So, he was gone but after that I had his friends to deal with.

To the Editor: I’m posting this tidbit as a hurt child:

30+ years of devotion to the same job, what do you do when the people you work for don’t have any respect for you for all you have done to help a local agency be the best it can be, helping provide a service to the clients of Edgefield County?

I’m a hurt child writing to recognize the hard work put in by my parent for a job of 32 years. I was very hurt when recently my parent wasn’t recognized as an employee of this agency. It’s amazing how quickly people forget how you as that employee helped organized this agency when those that’s there now, came in and didn’t know what to do. I don’t care how qualified (how much education you have, if you don’t know what you’re doing when you come into a new job and a person that has been there years before you have) has to show you how to run an agency you should be grateful and give them the credit that’s do.

Maybe my parent wasn’t recognized because he/she didn’t go alone with the plan. You need to recognize some of the employees that were given so much recognition (check out their background and check out some of the things around town that’s happened lately) you’ll see this agency isn’t all it’s cut out to be. Check out the enrollment, check out the conditions of how this agency came about getting bigger, and check out the status of the employees! There’s something wrong with this picture and it really needs to be checked out. All is not what you’re seeing!!!

It’s bad when you are surrounded by more than 1 person with bad judgment!

It has taken a lot for me to say this but it’s from my heart. Love from a devoted child.

Thank you Mr. Editor for posting this, I was told you were fair about posting things we needed to get off our chest..

Just curious,How much is your average grocery bill? Could you feed a family of three on 176.00/month ? - thats an average of around 40.00 /wk.or less than 6.00/day for 30 days. o  The state says yes, even with todays prices, oh, and when a child goes away to college, you don't have to send him any money or provide for him at all. They no longer count. Last time I checked a gallon of milk was over 4.00 and a 5lb bag of potatos was $6.00.  Your state logic at work. I suggest they try to live off that amount of groceries for the month. Maybe our state senators and representatives should live off of it, since they help to set it. Oh, thats right, the State legislators voted themselves a pay raise, cut funding to state universites causing an 8% increase in tuition. But, go ahead and feed your family on the amount you recieve, afterall, the poor don't count, they can't contribute to campaigns and they certainly aren't lobbyist. Lets just step on them.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, two of the greatest race hustlers ever assembled under one national roof, have long made one of their chief complaints the fact that too many black youths are in prison.

Well, there is a reason for that, and no better explanation can be found than in reading newspapers, which almost daily recount the exploits of blacks who find the use of violence, particularly gunplay, a better deal than joining the employment ranks and getting an honest job.

Let me direct everyone’s attention to the Aug. 7 issue of the Augusta Chronicle wherein is told the tales of the latest criminal capers that sent a few blacks off to spend their maturity watching the sun come up in cracks. For them there will be no more staying out late, sleeping late and scouting for victims.

Saying their goodbyes in an Augusta federal court were Nathaniel E. Jones (20 years in the slammer), Jacob Plowright (32 years), Rafael C. Milligan (25 years), Matthew T. Roberts (14 years) for robbing convenience stores, shooting honest business owners and taking cars by force from their rightful owners. Demetrius K. Ford, a member of their club, will be joining his pals next week after he gets his day in court.

Georgia law enforcement and judicial authorities need not worry about running out of applicants. Currently up for a day on the criminal court docket are Sherman Nel Thomas and William Alfonzo Moody. These two lovelies are charged with armed robbery and what police called “nighttime muggings.” The muggings would have been daytime jobs but the poor dears probably sleep during the day, then wander the roads at night looking for victims.

Yo, there, Jesse and Al. How about a little comment about people who put themselves behind bars?

I don't know who came up with the idea of letting teachers at STH fill out forms on the qualities they wanted in a Principal, but it was a brilliant one. Even if she did sue, they have plenty of material to use just from these forms. There was an abundance of negative comments/reasons why O'Neal should not be hired as Principal. Investigations should come soon on the past misdeeds and crimes committed by O'Neal. Hopefully, when the dust clears she will serve time and lose her pension. That would be justice

Quit burying your head in the sand life is not sweet and kind. Yes the  teen age auto accidents are tragic, but maybe the parents need  to think a little harder about letting their kids drive. Not all 16
year olds are mature enough to be driving. Text messaging is they way to communicate which adds one more distraction. It has been proven the  teen age brain is not fully developed to understand the consequence of  their actions, which explains the lack of fear in so many high risk activities. If I remember correctly it takes till the age of 25 for this part of the brain to finish developing. I think the driving age should be raised to 18 with two years of drivers ed. Of course this would inconvenience many parents who don't want to chauffeur big Timmy all the way to Strom Thurmond High School.  The simplest solution would be to have them so down and pay attention but we know that not going to
happen, so may be seeing the accidents story's on line might help save one or two kids, I know their parent would be grateful .

This is in reference to the young lady who wrote about being sexually assaulted in class.
Even though a few years have passed, she could still go to the superintendent and the school board and tell what happened.  If this took place in a classroom, surely there were witnesses as well.  And by the way, where was the teacher?  Furthermore, why didn't the young lady and her family seek assistance from the Sheriff's Department if the school refused to address the situation?  Anyone can file a complaint.  Also, if the young man has been incarcerated for assaulting four other women, then his name should be a matter of public record and easy to verify.
It sounds to me like there might be a little more to the story.  Although I appreciate that readers are allowed to express their opinions in Wandering Minds, this entry makes some allegations that could lead to serious consequences if they are proven to be true.  If they are false, then posting them causes real harm to those accused.  I don't believe anyone should be allowed to make accusations like these anonymously.  If she really wants to tell this story, she should do it publicly because those accused of this kind of wrongdoing should have the right to face their accuser.

Let me tell you first hand about a child molester. I was the victim for a few years and he was the principal of our school. He had a great reputation in the county....did I tell anyone...NO...why?...I was a kid 12-13 years old..who was going to believe me. Not only was it me at the school...but just about every boy and girl there. Back in the 60's you didn't talk about sex so we didn't know it was happening to the other kids in school.  So don't think just because you know someone they did not molest the child.. you know the sad thing about this story.....there were so many teachers in the school that knew what was going on...and no one, not one single teacher did a thing about it. I did have the opportunity a few years ago to face this man...as an adult. This was something I had waited on for years...I wanted to slap him in the face...I wasn't sure what I would say to him...as I prayed I got the answer...forgive him...WHAT? forgive him....and that I did...and I told him I did and that he needed to pray for forgiveness too. I was able to overcome the sexual molestation....sadly some of them were not. I was the victim...what happened was not my fault, I was a child.

If the gas stations don't want to get into a "gas war", maybe we can force them into a "gas revolution" by customers. Report the lowest price, and then everyone go there to fill up. This is America and a free market society. Take advantage of it. You have the money they want. Edgefield County is small enough to make it work. Editor's note: One teen died because he rolled his vehicle several times and was not wearing a seatbelt. The second teen lived with only bruises and scratches after rolling his vehicle more than once because he was wearing a seatbelt. A lot of teens read EdgefieldDaily.com and if one, or two, stories in succession can raise the awareness of just one teen (or anyone else for that matter) to make them buckle up, it could save a life. Barack Obabma has a great idea to release the oil reserves to lower the gas prices. Guess who is blocking that ? The REPUBLICANS! GW just wants to make sure his BIG OIL buddies make billions while we pay $4 a gallon for gas.

Editor's note: Rather than try to debate this let me give you a few facts to ponder.
1. Over 74% of all of our oil comes from Islamic nations, the very ones who fund terrorism across the world. According to information reported by the press, that is over $700 Billion a year. That would be your money, not "big oil's"
2. The United States of America has more than enough available oil here to supply our nation with oil (100%) for more than 150 years, but it is Democrats that stop US companies from drilling for it.
3. Obama has claimed that drilling for this oil would not amount to a "drop in the bucket" and instead says if people would just check their tire pressure and get a tune up it would equal what could be drilled.
4. If tapping into oil that could supply the entire country with US oil is just a drop in the bucket, how is releasing a real "drop in the bucket" amount of oil from the Strategic Oil Reserves going to lower prices? That sounds like someone who thinks he is talking to a bunch of kindergartners that can't add 2+2 and get 4 if they had to.
5. Then again, most of those who would vote for Obama would fall into the classificatin of #4.

Getting ready to submit bid on fox creek school. What is up with that Mr. Editor.

Editor's note: The plans have been put out for bid and I was alerted when they arrived at the Dodge Room. The estimated $5.8 million school, by the plans, would have no cafeteria. Take a look at how the return duct work for HVAC is scheduled too. That will decrease the efficientcy of the HVAC units by half. But, it's only taxpayer money paying the power bill, right? Even if the USDA loan is granted, and as I follow the process FCHS is in the final running for the loan, it shows just how inept those running the school are by the design they have put on paper.

They can barely get by now paying for their current expenses (at last information received was about 10% of the money received to "educate" the students. But FCHS will not even open their books for the ECSD. I saw their last audit, and I can understand why they want to keep it out of the public view). IF, the loan goes through, where are they going to get the money to pay it back? Only one place... taking money away from the student's education. That's a no-no. Remember, a public body cannot commit the taxpayer to a debt without a referendum. It can all come to a halt for $135.

I think everyone should wait and give the new principle a chance and stop trying to" judge the  book by it's cover", so to speak. Some times in life people gain a lot of wisdom despite their age, and use it accordingly. He may surprise you!

First, the Editor in merely a “middle man” between law enforcement and the public. The Editor publishes information that is proven to be FACTUAL from credible sources; via law enforcement, SLED, the Solicitor’s Office, the Magistrate, & other LEGAL professionals. Otherwise, the Editor and anyone else who reports the news, would not have employment, thus the public would be terribly misinformed.

Second, for your insinuation that “anyone who knows the Hickson Family knows this situation to not be true” - I have known the Hickson Family for nearly ten years and I DO believe the situation is TRUE. Just because you know someone for a lengthy period of time, does NOT mean you REALLY know them. What is the old saying… One cannot judge a book by its cover. This statement should be self explanatory but then again so should the LEGAL documents and evidence of the case.

Third, here is your English lesson for the day…
“Hearsay” means information that is heard second hand. Go ahead and look it up. It is my understanding that the Editor is not able to print “hearsay” information. The Editor’s job is to merely print the FACTS. The (readers) are entitled to their own opinions.
“Opinion” means a conclusion drawn from observation of facts.
“Fact” means something known to be true: something that can be shown to be true, to exist, or to have happened. i.e. legal documents.
Fourth, The Editor is NOT on trial here. The Editor has done NOTHING wrong. Obviously you are a family member or a family friend that does not have children. YOU need to get YOUR facts accurate. Bobby Hickson is the suspect. There WAS sufficient evidence to warrant an arrest on the current charges and more charges are (possibly) pending. These “facts” are not “opinion” nor “hearsay.”

Fifth, until YOU have experienced this type of situation, (child molestation and kidnapping, & the charges that (could be) pending) do NOT be so quick to throw stones, judge or defend. The evidence DOES and will speak for itself in the eyes of the law. Isn’t that why we have a legal system? So, be patient, my friend.

Finally, I agree with another viewer… “It would be foolish of anyone to put their children into a situation where they could be the next victim of someone accused of such a crime. I wouldn't trust him not even to prove a point to the world.”
web posted August 6, 2008

I have read with interest the various posts regarding Bobby Hickson. I feel compelled to comment as I have been through the experience where a family member molested my child over a several year period.

First of all, an arrest is not made lightly by ECSD - great pains are taken during the questioning process to ensure that the child is being consistent in their responses, especially when there is no corroborating physical evidence.  The investigators look for signs that the child is more "sexually aware" than is age appropriate.  The other family members as well as the suspect are questioned as well.  Your lives become an open book.  One thing I learned from ECSD regarding sexual abuse of children, where "there is "smoke, there is usually "fire."  Children are more likely abused by someone they trust - a family member, a neighbor, a teacher, etc.  A child molester goes to great pains to develop and exploit this trust for their pleasure and keep it hidden from everyone.

Secondly, bail is a privilege allowed by law and is based on the crime.  Unless the crime is particularly heinous or the suspect is a flight risk, bail will be granted.  It is not a sign of innocence nor that there is insufficient evidence to prosecute.  Nor does it mean that he's guilty.    In the case of Bobby Hickson, I would hope that his bail included the stipulation that he could not be left alone in the presence of minor children.

Last of all, it is natural for Bobby Hickson's family and friends to rally around him in support.  No one wants to think that their family member, friend, etc., is capable of such a heinous crime. It is much easier to think that the child is making all of this up, or being told to make it up.   Unfortunately, it will take several years for this case to make its way into our court system - the lives of all involved will be in turmoil until then.

Re:  "I am a teacher at STHS. Mrs. O'Neal made no claim at all about sticking around because she was humiliated at not being chosen."

Reflections: She said "I am not going anywhere" and then gave that scowl that she gives so eloquently. You had to read between the lines. She had been voted down by the board, or one could say given a vote of "NO CONFIDENCE". You think she was happy. Nope, I do not have any "little darlings" at STHS. If you support O'Neal then you must be one of those educators that shows movies 5 days a week. How many times, with supporting documentation, have you been observed in the last 5 years? If you noticed, I said with documentation to support your answer. Please submit this documentation to the editor at Edgefielddaily and let him post it. O'Neal is a relic that is past her time. Please comment on the "Considerations" sheet she gives out before testing occurs. It is a joke that was put together in haste. Most times it is illegible ( not legible; impossible or hard to read or decipher). Her handling of discipline is also a joke. She cannot and will not make a tough decision when it comes to enforcing the rules. Her grestest quality is blaming others for mishaps that were caused by her inability to make a tough decision. I only hope that Mr Schilit can overcome her (removed) attempts to sabotage daily operations of the school.

RE: I agree with the writer that Suzanne O'Neal should have been selected principal of STH.  She has been the "backbone" of that school for many years and should have been selected long ago.  She is very intelligent, professional, and would do a great job.

OK I could not DISAGREE with you more. You want to know about this “professional”? Im now 21 but when I was 15 (in the 9th grade) I was sexually assulted in class. When I went to Mrs. O’Neal and told her, you know what she told me? “Young lady, I’m terribly busy right now. Go back to class and I will call you to my office in a couple of hours.” WHAT THE HELL?! She sent me back to the class room with the guy that assulted me. She is anything but professional. They allowed that boy to stay in school they kicked him out for a few days and when he came back he found me in gym class. My mother snatched me out of school. Three days later Mrs. “Intelligent and Professional” called my mother and threatened to report her for truency. Soooo, I had to go back to school where this guy was. The SRO had to walk me from class to class. When I had to go to the restroom I had to call the SRO to come get me from class and walk me to the bathroom and wait outside while I did my business. All of this because Suzanne O’Neal and “No Backbone” Clancy would not expell this boy. He wound up finally getting arrested and the JUDGE told him he could not return to that school. The boy raped 4 other girls under the age of 15 before doing any prison time. So, lets rethink this…. You still thi(nk) this woman should be your child’s principal?

Me: If I'm not getting them how can I send you a copy?

IT: Tell the people calling you to give you a copy of what the rejection email says.

Me: And how am I supposed to do that?

From the comments I have seen, He is young and is into body building.   This may be a good thing, He can walk down the halls of the school with out being worring about the many bullys and is not to far out of touch with the students.   Looks like he may be good for the school.
But on a second thought, the school board screwed up when they hired Thompson, he did not play their race games, they screwed up when they hired Roberson, he did not play their race games, and it looks like they screwed up with Dr Crenshaw, She don't give a rip about race.  The thing that saves us from the school board is the school board.

From Editor: Please tell me my favorite liberal friend has not been drinking too much of the Pelosi "I hate America" Kool-Aid. It sure sounds like it.

Reflection: Yes, I am a liberal, and no I do not hate the US. I am perplexed by the comments that are written about a picture of clothing that Obama has worn in the past. Please see link below to see one example of what our Prez "Dubya" has worn while serving office.

http://obsidianwings.blogs.com/obsidian_wings/2008/02/oh-noes-george.html

Then take a look at the link below and see how friendly "Dubya" is with the House of Saud in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has the worst record for Darconian treatment of women.

http://www.cogitamusblog.com/2008/02/president-bushs.html

Many Arab nations have publicly denounced the actions of radical Islamic terrorist groups. Anyone can spread hate with pictures and out of context quotes, but I always thought that Christianity was about spreading love and harmony. I think it shows the true nature of some Christians when they espouse hatred of others and their beliefs. We in America have the right of freedom to practice any religion, not just the right of freedom to practice Chritianity. Like I heard the other day on TV from an evangelical women "Jesus did not come on this earth to become a politician, he came to spread love and teach others to treat all with kindness....".

Editor's note: Funny, the US Government promotes every religion but Christianity. You still ignore Obama attending a church for 20 years that preaches hate towards America and white people. Obama even gave over $20,000 to the church. Address the facts about your candidate first, then we can hold a real discussion.

In the 50-year period from 1870 to 1920 America experienced the greatest mass immigration of peoples since its founding, and the numbers of newcomers have continued at a steady pace over the ensuing years.
These new Americans came mainly from the western nations of Europe, with the population of the new citizens ranging into the many, many millions.
All of these people shared a common thread. Not a single one of them, man, woman or child had ever owned a slave. And neither did the first, second, third and fourth generations of the immigrants.
We must look these unassailable facts to point out the foolishness of those who are trying to use a blanket guilt complex in their demands for reparations for slavery.
How utterly stupid to blame those who had nothing to do with slavery as the prime reason for their demands that they be given checks from a U.S. treasury already under siege from all quarters.
Instead of whining and complaining against people who had no connection to slavery, those seeking reparations should do like our immigrants did: get an education, learn to speak a common language, work hard at your job (starting at the bottom and working your way to the top) and thank God you live in this country.
My ancestors came to this country in the 1880s, immigrants from Ireland and England, and thus never owned a single slave. To demand that a portion of my tax money go to pay reparations to people too stupid to work or too lazy to work is reprehensible.
I am not alone in my feelings in this respect, and a very good way to start an armed revolution in this country is to force people to part with their money to satisfy a gang that would refuse to work at a job testing mattresses or sampling pies.

I do not know Bobby Hickson or his family other than in passing but for the courts to release a warrant for him there must be suitable evidence against him. I feel the last person to comment on his "Innocence" must be a family member or friend. In their eyes they are always innocent.  The family of a defendant never believes their loved ones could have done that horrible thing. I say let it go through the court system and if he is found guilty he will get what his sick self deserves in prison. If he is innocent then he will be free with a little bump in the road that is what life is all about.

Just my 2 cents!
web posted August 5, 2008

Mr. Editor:
Your sources are still wrong (Re: Bobby Hickson).  If you really used law enforcement, court documents, etc....then the problem must be that you are not comprehending what you are reading/hearing.  I asked for you to put your thinking cap on and figure out what two things you stated that were inaccurate.  You didn't do that.  Believe me, I know the law a lot better than you.  You still offered opinions in your response that you state as if they are facts.  Do you understand the difference between opinion and fact?  No need to respond.  I already know the answer to that one.

Editor's note: Again, you want to make such claims but refuse to back them up. I have provided the basis of the information made available so I can only assume that you would rather make baseless allegations than support them with your so-called facts.

You obvously have a far better legal mind than the investigators, SLED, the Solicitor's Office, the Magistrate, and all other legal professionals involved in the case. I would suggest you lend your extensive legal knowledge to Mr. Hickson's defense. You are way out of my league. I am impressed that you can refute legal affidavits, warrants, and other evidence.

Did Mr. Hickson do what he is charged with doing? I don't know, that is not my call to make. I have said that people need to let the court system work and let a jury make that determination. All I can do is report the findings in the case as they are released.
web posted August 5, 2008

It's really sweet that Bobby Hickson's family and friends are defending him so publicly but lashing out at the minor victim and taking it out on the editor (for having an opinion) are just wrong.

Judges make bad decisions, set bail and make it possible for first time offender types to be out on bail.  When supportive family/friends come up with the bond, THEN dangerous people are allowed to get out of jail and possibly commit other crimes.  Child molesters come in all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and professions so Mr. Hickson's volunteer service, job, interests, etc....mean nothing to me.  Child molesters also put themselves into situations where they can be around or 'looked up to' by potential victims.  Sadly, children of friends and family are often the victims to 'trusted friends'.

Maybe Bobby Hickson is innocent but maybe he is guilty.

With that all of that being said, it would be foolish of anyone to put their children into a situation where they could be the next victim of someone accused of such a crime.  I wouldn't trust him not even to prove a point to the world.

So while the Hickson family and friends rally around this 'good man', just remember to keep your own kids safely away.

I am a teacher at STHS. Mrs. O'Neal made no claim at all about sticking around because she was humiliated at not being chosen. I am not surprised that she was not chosen this time around because Sallie Cooks made comments three years ago to the effect that she would never support her as principal.
As for Mr. Schilit, I will give him the support I would give any principal. My only question is how long will he be around? He's 29 years old, has no ties to this community, and by his resume, obviously a very ambitious man. How long until a Columbia-area high school has a principal's opening and he is gone?
The teacher surveys were a nice touch and the teachers on the interviewee panel were a nice touch, but there was no discussion after the interviews about who would be the best fit for STHS. A piece of paper was was given, the interviewee was 'graded' and then the sheets were passed back in to Dr. Crenshaw and Clinckscales, never to be seen or heard from again. The only people who care what the teachers think at STHS are the teachers themselves.

Mr. Editor, remember it is your job to report news, not to attempt to persuade your readers with inaccurate information.  Actually that is your obligation as a journalist.  In your Editor's Post regarding the Bobby Hickson case, you state "The Sheriff's Office does not arrest people on hearsay" which insinuates that their must be sufficient evidence of guilt, more than just an accusation.  It is often quite the contrary.  With a child "victim", just an accusation ("hearsay") can be all the police need to make an arrest.  I am confident that you are not an expert at criminal law; please don't make statements that you know nothing about.  Giving you the benefit of the doubt, maybe you didn't mean it the way it is stated (insinuated)---if that's the case, then you need to sharpen your journalist pencil and rephrase it next time.

I agree with the previous blogger, that there is a reason that Mr. Hickson was let out on bail.  The most likely reason should be somewhat intuitive—he is considered to be safe to let out by those who actually do know the law.  He is not guilty.  For those of you that know Mr. Hickson and the Hickson family you would know that these claims are not true.  Do your homework before you offer an opinion.  It is worth the effort to be a critical thinker, and that goes for you too, Mr. Editor.

Again, Mr. Editor, you have an obligation to your readers to report the truth.  You have made at least two comments in response to the blogs about Mr. Hickson's case that are false.  Obviously, your "sources" are not giving you good information.  Please do your readers a favor and do your homework before you report news.  I'll leave it up to you to put your thinking cap on and figure out which responses you offered that are completely untrue.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out, unless you're thinking you are that too along with being an expert at criminal law.

Editor's note: I would love for you to list any comment that I made that was false. Believe me, I have withheld far more information than that which has been released by the area media. As far as my "sources", the information comes from law enforcement, court documents, and arrest warrants. Hardly "false" information. You may want to check your "sources", as they may be a bit more biased in the information they are giving you. Being released on bond has nothing to do with being proven to be innocent. Warrants are issued by the Magistrate only after solid evidence has been submitted by law enforcement showing probable cause.

That is not an opinion, that is a fact.

I sit back and read about how the editor and his redneck, backwards buddies castigate all Muslims and stereotype them as terrorists. And I bet you good ole boys call yourself Christians , born again idiots, whatever. However, I bet you all come from the same mold as Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. You good ole boys are probably best friends with those Jesus lovin' KKK members and Aryan Nation douchebags. Any religion can have fanatic radical sects. One should not stereotype a religion for its weakest link.

Editor's note: I denounce those who hide behind the Christian religion (as do 99.99% of Christians) to perpetuate their hate. That is the same reason I hold the KKK and the NAACP in the same category. Both are hate groups and support and promote racial tension to benefit themselves, not those they claim to represent.

Funny, Muslims do not do the same for Islamic terrorists. In fact, the countries they come from continue to kill the victims of rape because women are lower than dogs in their religion and "muslims" never come out publicly to denounce the terrorist bombings that kill innocent women and children.

Please tell me my favorite liberal friend has not been drinking too much of the Pelosi "I hate America" Kool-Aid. It sure sounds like it.

I work with disadvantaged children and almost all of them come from African-American homes. There are four main areas that I deal with on a daily basis as a root cause of the problems that they encounter. Other workers may encounter a different set of circumstances so I do not want to speak for everyone. The four problems I see most often are drug abuse, physical or sexual abuse, single teen parent births, and limited education opportunities. There needs to be more funding for programs to help the disadvantaged minority class obtain the American Dream.

Editor’s note: I think the four areas you mention are problematic everywhere and in areas like Boston or Denver the numbers of those facing the problems are majority white so I discount it as a racial problem.

Three of four areas you bring up I see as life choices.
One chooses to do drugs.
One chooses to have unprotected premarital sex.
One chooses not to take advantage of twelve years free schooling.

Why blame the rest of the responsible people for the ignorant choices of a few and make the responsible people pay for it?

There is an old saying. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. After twelve (or more) years of giving someone fish while trying to teach them to fish on their own, at what point do you say, here is the fishing pole and bait, go figure it out for yourself - rather than continuing to provide rewards for failure?

Post: I do question the board on not choosing Mrs. O'Neal.
Reflection: She had her chance as a principal in the past and was reassigned due to incompetence and mismanagement. She neither has the backbone or management skills to be principal of a school. Most who work with her wonder how she has kept her job as an Asst. Principal for so long. She's been around too long and it is time for her to retire and pass the helm of AP to someone more qualified. Her work product is shabby and she is very disorganized. She is unable to make tough decisions and enforce rules without impartiality. You must be one of her cronies that wants treatment of favoritism. The process used to hire this principal was one of the most thorough in the history of the ECSD. It involved teacher input and teachers participating in the interview proces, which I imagine is a first for the ECSD. Most faculty members of STHS breathed a sigh of relief when the decision was announced, that the job did not go to O'Neal. When Thompson was hired, O'Neal spoke at the first faculty meeting of that school year and said nobody had to worry about her leaving because she was humiliated that the board had voted her down then. Most of the faculty had hoped she would leave.

She has devoted many years of service to Edgefield County and has worked tirelessly for the district. This job should have been hers! I hope she follows Mrs. Holmes in suing the district. Also, Mr. Schilit is listed as "not found" on Richland District 2 websites. Did he possibly resign earlier this summer? Having looked at this very early this morning, I doubt he was removed from the site that soon after last night's announcement.

Editor's note: That was the official information provided from the meeting. The School District sent out a press release on Friday with the full information. I have not researched his background at this time.

I never read (EdgefieldDaily.com) until a friend told me about the story on Mr. Hickson last week. I found Edgefield Daily to be very informitive and comprehensive in the coverage of events in our community and bookmarked the website. I found the wondering minds very entertaining. Is there a printed version of your paper?

Editor's note: We do not publish a printed version at this time. Due to the limited amount of stories available each day we remain web based and free. Readership for print media is dropping as web based media readership is growing. A print version is still under consideration, but not a main priority at this time.

I just read your article on the tax free holiday and it was hillarious. You have made my day, I have never lauged so hard I could of peed my pants. I guess I should go buy some adult diapers since they are tax free.

Editor's note: I don't make the lists, I just commented on them. Thank you for reading.

I have two kids at STH and I know how they give nicknames to teachers. I hope Mr. Schilit is a nice guy because I can just imagine what they are going to nickname him.

you need to update your school supplylist its for 2007-2008

Editor's note: That is the list the School District requested I run saying it would be "close enough".  I am getting a lot of feedback saying it is not. I can publish only what the District tells me to run. I expected a list for 2008-09 long before now.

Re: Editor's note: So you and County Councilman Willie Bright are the only ones reporting that you are happy and got a refund. I guess the remaining 24,998 other residents are just being silly.

I think you have overstated the population of Edgefield County that are eligible for property tax refunds. I don't think that the 2,800 prisoners in the Federal Correctinal Institute are eligible and are counted in our population for Census purposes. Also, probably 20-25% of the adults in Edgefield County do not own homes (rent/government subsidized housing) so they are not eligible for refunds either. Maybe the others who are not satisfied just did not know how to handle their appeal in a civilized matter. Sometimes being nice and civil brings positive results.

Editor's note: You must be right, and that is why a year and a half later the Assessor's Office is still handling appeals and so many are going to a court. Silly me.

The people who are writing about the Bobby Hickson case are really lucky in that they know exactly where he lives because it was on edgefielddaily.com and in the newspapers.  A man was recently arrested in Aiken County for Child Molestation,  The name of the street was listed in both the Aiken Standard and The Augusta Chronicle.  Several of the people that live on the same street called the Aiken County Sheriff's Department to ask exactly what his address was.  They were all told that was not public information and they could not find out anything.  They then asked if after he went to trial would it be public information.  They didn't know the answer to that question.  Meanwhile everyone is afraid to even go in the yard alone especially at night.  Does anyone know the law on revealing this information?  Wouldn't you think that the neighbors should be aware of what is going on around them?  What is the purpose of putting it in the paper if everyone is left hanging with only half the information?

Editor's note: EdgefieldDaily.com not publish Mr. Hickson's physical address, only the road he lives on.

Editor's post: I am lifting a rule, for now at least, on naming business names. But this is only for gas stations. Send in the price gas of your local station and I will post the information in the Wandering Minds. I will try to have them posted as soon as possible (same day if able) because of the big differences in prices and how fast they change. Sportsman's Corner in Merriwether (who is usually one of the lowest) has been one of the highest lately. Let's spread the word on where the cheapest gas is. I have seen prices from $3.59 to $3.68 in Johnston and Edgefield but Sportsman's has stayed in the low to mid $3.70's while everybody else continues to decrease in price.

Secondly, I would like to address a little matter  of a poster calling me a racist because of the muslim  clothing Obama is shown wearing in a recently posted picture. The poster said it was just a "costume". Well, I guess his buddies in Africa were playing "dress up" with him as they are all dressed that way. Maybe it was a "costume party"? See for yourself. Here is the original submission and here is the original photo. I will let you be the judge of what is in the photos. Thanks to a reader for the link to the  original photo.

When is our state going to so something about rising college tuition. I have 3 in college at one time and am looking seriously at  bankruptcy. if the constant increases continue at this rate. The Citadel had a 8% increase in tuition , they also raised tuition last year , Clemson has raised tuition 5.5% they also raised tuition the year before, the technical colleges and jucos arent that much better.A pell grant and SEOG will no longer cover the cost of a technical college education and life scholarships cant be used at a 2 year school so we are forced to pay the extra costs of a 4 year university.Does our state legislature intend to do anything about the cost of a college education in this state? When is enough ,enough. and yes I am very proud to be a Clemson, Citadel, and Spartanburg Methodist mom but its time the constant tuition increases come to an end;If not a college education will not be accessible to those who are the most poverty stricken and needy or even the middle class. It will only be available to those with the parents in the upper levels of income. When will our state finally stand up for the kids of SC and Just Say NO

I loved your article on the back to school tax free items and coundn't agree more. Where the babies come into the conversation I just have this observation. When I was growing up a baby had a mother and a father. Now they have a baby-moma and a baby-daddy. I think thats the biggest problem.

I grew up with (the Editor) and I know for a fact he is not racist. I'd know because I'm black and we have been friends the whole time. We've had long talks about problems in the black and white communities and I agree with almost everything he says when we talk. Something he said to me today was really true. When somebody calls somebody a racist it is (usually) because they can't defend their side. We need to stop looking at color and start working on the problems. (The Editor) is always fair and speaks his mind and unlike everybody else he puts his name to what he says and catches all the (grief) about it.

I am proud to call him my friend and I am proud of what he has done for this county with Edgefield Daily.

Editor's note: Thank you for your kind words. I am just as proud to have you and your family as a close friends. I removed your name even though you asked it be printed.

On June 20th of this year I called the County Assessor's office with an appeal for my property assessment for the tax years 2005, 2006, and 2007. I felt that the square footage was incorrect in my favor. Ms. Bryant asked me to email her so she would have a written record of my appeal. Four days later, a licensed appraiser showed up and verified that the square footage was incorrect. One week later, I received a letter asking me if I was satisfied with the findings and if I signed it then these new findings would be used for my assessment. The letter was signed and mailed back, and 8 days later I received three checks with refunds for the tax years totaling $670+. My dealings with the EC Assessor's office was a wonderful experience, contrary to what I have read on edgefielddaily.com.

Editor's note: So you and County Councilman Willie Bright are the only ones reporting that you are happy and got a refund. I guess the remaining 24,998 other residents are just being silly.

Barack Hussein Obama, pompous, arrogant, self centered. I am what the world has been waiting for, he says. That's exactly right, I say, the downfall of America. The rest of the world is salivating at the
thought of us electing someone that thinks like they do. From socialized medicine to redistribution of wealth, Obama is their man. He gave a rousing speech in Germany about how bad we are, torturing
terrorists. Then playing lovey dovey with the French president, all the while promising to meet firsthand with all of the dictators in the world including Iran's. This guy will not admit when he is wrong. The
surge has worked in Iraq. He will not admit it. When I want to know how Obama thinks, I look at the hate filled words of his pastor of twenty years, Jeremiah Wright. If that doesn't convince me, maybe the
words of the other so-called pastor,Father Flueger. If I am still not convinced what kind of person this guy is I listen to his rapper friend Ludicris and his latest release. His refusal to embrace nuclear
power, drill for our own oil, use clean coal technology, coupled with his call for higher taxes is a death knell for our country while trying to compete in the global market. He will embolden our enemies
with his weakness and capitulation.  He will try to take away many of our constitutional rights and freedoms. I doubt this man has ever held a gun , much less fired one. This is the man that would not visit the wounded troops in Germany while on his world tour, because his press person was not allowed to go. John McCain may not be the ideal candidate, but he did serve honorably in the military and is
exponentially more qualified to be our Commander in Chief. Barack Hussein Obama is a clear and present danger to our country.

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that the sixth grade supply list for MMS is an old one and is not accurate. I realize that it was given to you by someone from the DO, but I am a 6th grade teacher there, and it is not accurate. Ms. Mauney doesn't even teach there any longer. Current supply lists were available at registration this past Tuesday and they are available in the office of the school as well. I just don't want parents to spend their money on items that are not needed.

Editor's note: I have been trying to get the lists for two weeks before the tax free weekend. When the District Office (DO) said to post last year's lists I did so. I am sorry if it causes any confusion, I can only go with the information I am asked to print.

Instead of everyone talking about this poor "innocent" minor and this "guilty" man in the Bobby Hickson case,  why don't we let the court system work? Noone responding knows the truth so why all the speculation. Obviously, he was let out of jail because the "experts" in this case felt that it was safe to do so or maybe don't have enough evidence. Having said that, this "innocent until proven guilty" person deserves to continue "life as usual".

To the poster offended by the submitted picture of Obama and McCain, I sent it to the editor and DID suggest that it be edited. Not for the photograph, but for the noun at the end. He did not, and hats off to him. The editor is right and I believe in this Presidential race, like most others, we have to vote for the lesser of two evils. I voted for Mr. Dobey, and love James Brown.

I take it you were in a bad mood last night when you answered the person suggesting you were racist. You usually just brush it off but you unloaded on the person.

Editor’s note: It rubbed me the wrong way, that is for sure. When someone (and Obama, Democrats, and the national media, all the same in realty), excuse anything muslim by Obama as a costume and when you challenge them on his being an empty suit and a Marxist you are doing so because you are “racist” because he happens to be black.

Obama attends a church for 20 years that preaches whites are the devil and other racist things, but ignore that and call me a racist because I disagree with Obama politically. I’m sick of it. I do not care what color a person is, I judge them on what they say, do, and display. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck – it’s probably a duck.

Have you ever counted the number of fire hydrants in the area between Edgefield and Johnston?  That must, of course, mean that there is water to those fire hydrants.  Therefore, the county must be providing the water.  What about the west side of the county?  No fire hydrants there so there must not be any water provided by the county.  Right you are perceptive reader because no one cares whether the people in the west side of the county have adequate water.  Maybe the personal wells will go dry before the county takes action.  And trust me they will take action about as fast as bureaucracy does anywhere....long after the people leave.  But make sure that you put your political signs up every 20 feet and ask for votes, those of you running for office.
