Re:  I sure wish you would try to give a reason to vote for Sen. Obama rather than reasons to vote against Sen. McCain.

CW: Obama is honest and does not lie directly to the people of this country. He will bring the needed change of direction and fight for the lower and middle class citizens of this nation. He is not a degenerate gambler (NY Times article, Sunday, Sept. 28) like McCain and he will not try to privatize Social Security as John McCain tried to several years ago. He does not believe in witchcraft like Sarah Palin does. He will work to repair the reputation of the US that "Dubya" and "Here's" Johnny McCain have destroyed over the last 8 years. He will bring home our troops and stop spending $12 billion per month in Iraq. As far as I am concerned, let the Iraqis have a civil war. We should get our troops out completely, drop a couple of nukes, and just start over. Doesn't your wife work for one of those financial firms that has raped the US economy of its financial integrity? Don't you attend one of those churches that will not allow women to serve as deacons?
Hey you are really enlightened and somebody I want to listen to when it comes to matters of the economy and foreign affairs. PSYCHE!!

Editor's note: Oh, Obama does not lie...He never knew Rev. Wright was preaching hate and racism for the 20 years he attended the church. He did not know his advisors were linked to terrorism, he did not know his mentors were certified communist supporters, and he never took money to protect the corruption that was rampant in the GSE Fannie Mae.

Typical Democrat.

I am still waiting for a reason to vote "for" Obama.

Editor's post: What a wonderful day it was Sunday. It was so nice we decided to fire up the grill and enjoy the great outdoors on our deck and the peaceful relaxation that comes from living in the country along Woodlawn Road. There was a problem, however. It was impossible to enjoy the great outdoors because the newly paved Woodlawn Raceway was in use as motorcycles raced up and down the road at a high rate of speed. The fools on their crotch-rockets would pass by over and over, revving their engines as they run through their gears in about a quarter mile making it sound like a drag strip as they left out from Sportsman's Corner.

Yes, we called the Sheriff's Office and they did come and ride around for a few minutes but they left to answer other calls. And guess who returned? Yeah, you guessed it. I used to call them future organ donors, but after they bounce off the trees at 100+ mph the only thing left of them will be a driver's license to identify them. Excuse me if I do not feel sorry for them when it happens. It has been going on for years and nothing is done to stop it. Now that the road is newly paved it will just get worse.

I donʼt understand why there wasnʼt enough money to replace our assistant principal.  Merriwether Elementary has two people assisting their principal.  Does any other school in the district have their own curriculum person?  Maybe one of them can come to Douglas?  Seems like we should have a curriculum coach with our number of special needs children.

Editor's note: I do not see the need for two vice principals at any school in Edgefield County. We need to direct more money towards the classrooms, not the administration that is already too top-heavy. The same goes for the District Office as well. We have too many replicated positions. We need to cut the fat and the fat is at the top, not at the bottom.

I can assure you that the administration, faculty and staff of Johnston Elementary do not think the school is perfect.  If they did they would not spend countless hours planning, reading professional books, observing teachers in the classroom, attending in-services, etc.  The teachers at JES work hard everyday to ensure that each child receives the education they need and deserve…just like EVERY school in Edgefield County does…or should.

If you have a problem with the education that your special needs child receives(ed) you should take this up with the school principal, guidance counselor or Donna Strom.

I believe Mr. Lee had “second thoughts” because he wasn’t sure if he “had” what it would take to make DES the school it should be.  I am sorry if you are upset about the new principal at DES.  Many in the county are just as upset and shocked.  However, concerns should be taken up with those who made the decision – not by bashing another school.  Please don’t create a problem for schools just trying to do what is best for students.

I watched the deabate Friday night and I was ashamed of (Sen.) John McCain. (Sen.) Obama would keep repeating "8 years of failed Bush policies" for the fannie and freddie collapse and NOT ONE TIME did McCain point out it was the DEMONcrats that did this!!!! He may be a war hero but if you ask me he is a coward! He is pandering to the left once again and trying to distance himself from Pres Bush. He better grow a pair or I'm staying home on Nov 4.

Editor's note: That would be the worst thing to do even if you do not support Sen. MaCain (which, I do not). Letting a Marxist (Sen. Obama) get elected would be a total disaster for the nation and individual freedom.

Wow, another week full of news. Did anyone see the Palin/Couric interview. It is scary to think that if McCain is elected, and something were to happen to him, she would be in charge. Talk about a BIMBO. I didn't know that Russia was thinking of invading Alaska. It seems as though the Repubs would have done a better job preparing her to answer questions from the press. It just shows how inexperienced the McCain advisors are in preparing the candidates. Even the arch conservative pundits are turning on her. Some have even said that they are embarassed by her answers in the interview with Couric.
Times have gotten tough. I was listening to the national news on Friday evening and they mentioned that gas would be tough to get this weekend. I went to get some a little after 7 and could not find a drop in Edgefield or Johnston. I would hate to see a bail out for Wall Street greedmongers, but if something is not done, lots of people are going to start losing their jobs and no one is going to be able to borrow any money, no matter how high your credit score.
Did anyone else notice that (deleted)-eating grin smile that Johnny "Suspend my campaign to muddle up negotiations in Washington" McCain kept flashing at the debate on Friday night. It was good to see him wiped off the map by Obama. One thing that really struck me was when Obama talked about how China has spread its dominance all over the globe while the US has focused only on Iraq. If we are fighting Al Qaida, and they have a presence in 60 countries all over the world, then why are we focused only on Iraq. In the meantime, China has been building and drumming up business in Africa, Central America, and South America; securing oil for its reserves and to advance its cause; while we have seen our economy collapse, basically implode from the inside out.
It has been three weeks now since I asked all of you to send in names of any local churches that allow women to serve as deacons. I have seen 0 names. What hippocracy and sexism? You would think that if a women could possibly be elected VP, that she could serve as a deacon at a church. I guess that women in the local area will always be seen as second class citizens in the eyes of local churches.
Have a great day!!

As I sit here and watch the local news on tv I can only shake my head and just think how stupid these people are sitting in these long lines waiting to get gas. The gas is not going away. My family and I used to run a local wholesale gasoline company here in the county, and trust me it will be here for a long time to come. If a station runs out of gas, then wait a day or two and they should receive a shipment of gas, or just go on to the next one, or just don't drive anywhere; walk--its good for you. The only time i really drive my vehicle is to work and back home, and i only fill up at the most twice a month, and that is with diesel fuel. Which has been a whole lot higher in price then gas has been. If everybody would just chill out things will get back to normal. In the time being I will sit here and watch all these crazy people panic for no reason at all, but it seems that this is what the world is coming to anymore.

To the poster that responded to “special ed children ruining education”.

You surely didn’t mean the statement “I can only pray that if and when your have your own child or grandchild that they are special needs.”   Why would you want an innocent child punished for the hurtful words spoken by its parents or grandparents?  I can only pray that God didn’t hear your prayer. There are enough special needs and neglected children being born without praying that more would be.  We don’t all have to have a special needs child to be more sensitive to their situations, so just be a little more careful how you express yourself.

To the Person who complained about Bruce Lee at Douglass. OH PLEEAAASSSSSEEE!  Your just upset because Mr Lee did not cowtail to all of your demands like the pevious principal did. Sammie Williams catered to his own race when it came to employees and students. Mr Lee would not do this so it probably pissed you off. And yes JOHNSTON ELEMENTARY is PERFECT. We are glad to have mr Lee back, he was a great asset to this school. As for special needs kids , my child was special needs and attended DES with Amy Williams and she was wonderful, but once my child entered 4k the teacher had no clue as to my childs needs. She was clueless and uncompassionate. Most of these special needs kids are passed over for education because most of the higher ups in the district refuse to see anything wrong with these kids. I constantly was told "Oh we don't see anything wrong with your child" Are you doctors? NOOOOOO! So parents beware if your child is special needs they will most likely get passed over because they refuse to see anything wrong with them. They are the experts right? Yeah Sure!

Thursday night I had to come to Strom Thurmond High School for a football game.  I have not been part of the panic at the gas stations and only buy gas when I need it.  I was low and went by the stations in town and one had a line of 25 to 30 vehicles.  I went on to (another station) and saw that they had a pump open with a white female in a white pickup truck pumping gas in her vehicle.  I pulled in behind her to wait to get gas, even though the sign said $3.99.  After several minutes, she ensured that she filled her vehicle to the rim and removed the nozzle.  As I was waiting for her to pull off, she reached inside her truck and pulled out a white grocery bag and put it on the nozzle.  I looked at her and she shrugged her shoulders.  I rolled down my window in confusion and asked what she was doing.  She responded that she had payed for her gas earlier in the day and that the other stations in town had gas.  She smiled and walked away.

Obviously, this individual was an employee or family member.  It is also obvious that the station was not out of gas, which may be part of the overall problem.  It appears to me that maybe some of the stations who close off their pumps  are not doing so because their tanks are empty.  I know that I will never buy as much as a candy bar from that business again.

The van that clvfd is selling was not donated , it was purchased about 7 years ago and is now being sold. No other dept. has given clvfd  any vehicle , they all had to be purchased. The other departments were contacted to see if they were interested in the van and they declined.

Wondering minds want to know if the rumor is true about Countyline Fire Dept having an ambulance donated to them from the County.  If this rumor is true, were you at the County Council meeting?    This explains, when I drove down HWY 25 the other day, why they are selling their First Responder van.  Can you find out these answers for me:  Why were they the chosen one, when there are a couple of other Dept with a lot less income and are scraping to get by?  Why are they selling their First Responder van instead of donating it to one of those departments?

Edito'rs note: As I understand the CLFD is selling the van on the roadside. If it was donated it should have been passed onto the other deprived fire stations (Westside or the Northside VFD) once the additional needs of the department were met.

When are the owners/operators of the businesses on Main Street going to find another place to park their vehicles rather than right at their front door?  I only get 30 minutes for lunch and I like to eat at the restaurant on Main Street but just about every time I go, the owner and his employees are parked right out front.  Now, there is a new business across the street and the employees of that business are parking out front as well.

Editor's note: I know that the owner of one Main St. business has all employees (and the owner) parking behind the business. I am unsure of others.

Dear Editor: Thank you so much for your response to the person from the Merriweather area referring to themselves as being from North Augusta when they are actually Edgefield County residents that happen to have a North Augusta mailing address.  Newcomers need to realize the importance of becoming a part of, and involved in, the county those chose to live in.  Those of us originally from the Merriweather do not consider ourselves "from North Augusta".  Some Edgefield County residents even have Clarks Hill addresses, but that doesn't mean that you live on the lake.  Mail routes do not determine the community that you live in.  We are lucky to live in Edgefield County and should be proud to be a part of the community that we live in.

Editor's note: We are Merriwether. This is our community. We do not need the City of North Augusta to encroach any further than they already have. The Merriwether Community needs to incorporate to stop North Augusta and the Edgefield County Council's long term plan to sell us out to N.A.

Merriwether finally has a representative that understands that and being a life-long member of the Merriwether Community, those ties lie deep in the community. North Augusta has publicly said they would be the largest municipality in Edgefield County and Merriwether Councilman Joel Hudson never batted an eye or even opposed the encroachment. I guess that is why he will not be returning to the council in January.

I was upset over the departure of Mr. Bruce Lee from Douglas Elementary to become principal of Johnston Elementary. I am disappointed in Mr. Lee because one of his first sayings about coming to DES was that he had second thoughts before taking the job. This is not only hard for a staff to understand, but especially hard for the parents who are so proud of DES. And now we are told that we will not have an Asst. Principal because we do not have enough students to have one.

What is so disturbing is that much of our population is that of students who qualify for Special Education Services. One principal cannot possibly run an entire school and provide the needed services for all students. The new principal, Mrs. Chera Clark, has not worked with Special Services. One candidate for the position of Asst. Principal has spent all of her teaching career in Special Services. She would have been such an asset to the school in this position.

DES did not make AYP this past year. Why hasn’t the district realized that we need help and stability. Mr. Lee tried to make DES a model of Johnston Elementary, but he obviously failed. We need to see someone take over our school who has proven stability in raising test scores, motivating ALL students, and showing proven growth in both teacher and student achievement. My fear is that the state will step in to take over this school when the district appears to be doing little to prevent it.

It is also to be noted that Mrs. Sandra Friar, School District Employee, sent out an email stating that both schools were surveyed to determine what they wanted to see in the choice of a principal. The DES staff cannot recall being surveyed.

DES is a family oriented school. But one can just imagine how our family felt knowing that Mr. Lee started so much good work, but now it shows that his heart wasn’t really here. We do wish him the best of luck as he returns to his perfect Johnston Elementary.

Re: Editor's note: Yes. Do I support the current funding mechanism? No. Recreation should not be listed as a millage rate. It should be a line item with the full discretion of the county council overseeing and monitoring the funds.

Please explain what you mean as millage rate and the line item with full discretion etc

Editor's note: The money used for recreation should not be derived from a millage rate that stops the county council from being able to cut or expand funding for the program. As a "line item" the county is free to expand or contract the funding as needed. Recreation was "sold" to the county as a program that would fund itself and has since swallowed up millions with little or no accountability. That has to end.

Editor's post: I find this very interesting. Before Hurricane Ike hit gas in the ground rose to $5.25 a gallon on fears there would be a shortage when there wasn't one. Now that the disruption in the refineries for a week actually produces real shortages as they gear back up in production, gas is selling at $3.54 a gallon (except at stations that want to keep raking in high profits).

So, query this; If gas in the ground that was selling for around $3.40 a gallon rose to $5.25, why are these gas stations selling gas now when there is a real shortage in production to the area at $3.54? Why, gas prices should be $1.85 a gallon higher if what they said then was true.

Face facts. You can't stop buying gas from those retailers that stuck it to you when they could because you needed gas (or are doing so now). But you can stick it to them where it counts; In their pocketbook. Buy your gas and nothing else. No drinks, no cigarettes, no chips, snacks, or any other item from inside the store. Get those items at the grocery store where it is cheaper anyway. Their real profits come from inside the store not at the pump (unless they raise the price of gas $1.85 in a few hours again.)

If you really want to make your dissatisfaction known, there is no better way that I can think of. Go back to the way things were when I was a child. If you need some sugar, borrow it from your neighbor (you should know them) and repay them with a pound after you return from the grocery store rather than run to the local convenience store to pay a price 50% to 80% higher than the grocery store. You will still save money and that is what it is all about.

Readers are free to submit their ideas on how to save money and they will be published.

Surprisingly, there has only been on post since the original one on Sept 17th on the removal of a teacher from STHS.  It was mentioned in the editors note the this teacher had not been cooperating with police in the investigation of his "wife's death".  I think it is VERY worth mentioning that this person was married to and seperated from his wife who was found murdered, in fact, stabbed to death.  Graphic and disturbing as this is, it is the fact and people should know it.  The fact that this teacher hasn't cooperated with police speaks volumes. Where are the parents of our students?  Perhaps they do not even realize their little Tom or Suzy was in the presence of this person.  SCARY. The editor said there would be follow-up on his part. We are waiting.

Editor's note: I have been following this closely. The teacher in question has never been charged or listed as a suspect in the murder. It would be irresponsible for me to list the information I have at this time. The teacher has been removed from the classroom and the matter is still under review. The School Board does not meet for another two weeks and it may be addressed at that time.

Currently it is a personnel issue and the information I have is not for publication.

Who would I need to get in contact with to assist convicted felons find work. I don’t understand they are granted probation or parole but when they are out they can’t find work and none of the businesses around will hire them. My question is how are they to start over when no one will give them a chance to prove that they have been rehabilitated? Are there any city officials whom I can contact to see if there is assistance for these people who want a job but just can’t get one because of their criminal history?  Keep in mind there is always room for change; therefore we shouldn’t judge someone by a mistake that they have made.

Editor's note: That is a new one for me. I would suggest contacting the Office of Pardons and Parole. As far as private businesses, you have to respect their decision not to hire people who have been convicted of crimes when there are so many out there that are looking for jobs that have stayed on the straight and narrow. That would be like complaining that you can't get a loan because you have failed to pay back previous loans.

Don't blame others when you have to start at the bottom of the list because of your own actions.

Yesterday, it was announced that the state government is going to adopt what Shane Massey proposed. There will be no voice-only votes and every bit of legislation will be tied to whomever sponsored or supported it. Greg Anderson's naivite of government scares me. He is just rhetoric, rhetoric, and more rhetoric. We need action; not crybaby antics, and as one poster said not more "victimology". Whatever your politics, however you lean and however you feel about the current administration, this report is interesting. As tragic as the loss of any member of the US Armed Forces is, consider the below statistics:

The annual fatalities, by any cause, of military members while actively serving in the armed forces from 1980 through 2006:

    1980 2,392 (Carter)
    1981 2,380 (Reagan)
    1984 1,999 (Reagan)
    1988 1,819 (Reagan)
    1989 1,636 (George H W)
    1990 1,508 (George H W)
    1991 1,787 (George H W)
    1992 1,293 (George H W)
    1993 1,213 (Clinton)
    1994 1,075 (Clinton)
    1995 2,465 (Clinton)
    1996 2,318 (Clinton)
    1997    817 (Clinton)
    1998 2,252 (Clinton)
    1999 1,984 (Clinton)
    2000 1,983 (Clinton)
    2001    890 (George W)
    2002 1,007 (George W)
    2003 1,410 (George W)
    2004 1,887 (George W)
    2005    919 (George W)
    2006    920 (George W)
    2007    899 (George W)

    Clinton years (1993-2000): 14,107 deaths
    George W years (2001-2007): 7,932 deaths

Are you surprised when you look at these figures?  They indicate the loss from the two latest Middle East conflicts are less than the loss of military personnel during Clinton 's presidency when America wasn't even involved in a war--unless you include Bosnia and Mogadishu, Somalia. Remember “Blackhawk Down“?  Even more surprising is that in 1980, during Carter presidency, there were 2,392 US military fatalities!

These statistics are published by the Congressional Research Service and may be confirmed at: http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL32492.pdf

I purchased gas at Monks on Saturday of that weekend for $3.89 a gallon. I did pay cash. However Joel Jolly's Shell across the railroad tracks had raised their price to $4.49 a gallon. 60 cents a gallon is price gouging in anybody's book. Credit card or not.

I know Greg Anderson and Shane Massey, like them both, and don’t want to see negative ads.  I received the mail out everybody’s been screaming about.  Basically, the card said Shane has proposed an energy plan, Greg hasn’t, and why not.  Is it because some of Greg’s supporters are liberal environmentalists? That’s negative?  Last week gas was $5.00/gallon.  Tonight, stations in N.A. are out of gas.  We send $700 billion every year to buy oil from countries that hate us.  And it’s negative to say the guy hasn’t said anything about energy?  Heck, I’m more ticked at Greg’s response.  He still didn’t say anything about energy, he just said “Shane’s being mean to me.”

They didn’t call Greg a child molester or an adulterer.  They said he didn’t have an energy plan.  If that’s negative, it would be negative for Greg to criticize Shane’s voting record, and that’s just ridiculous.  We’ve got some real problems in SC (energy’s one of them).  Quit whining and tell me how you want to fix the problem.

By the way, my guess is these “Shane’s all fluff” comments aren’t coming from around here.  There may be folks who disagree with him on some things, maybe even don’t like him, but anyone who’s paid attention in Edgefield knows Shane’s not fluff.  The guy’s involved in our schools and our community, and he’s a hard worker.  If you’ve heard him talk at one of his town hall meetings, you know he’s not fluff.  Disagree with him?  Fine.  But he’s got some substance to him.

In response to the person disagreeing with Joel Jolly's letter trying to justify gas prices rising over the weekend, I also don't believe everything he said.  However, I would like to correct something you said.  You stated that Monk's BP did not raise their prices.  They raised their price like everyone else in Johnston, although they did lower them the follow- ing Monday.  However, they refused to accept credit cards.  I don't know about everyone else, but I personally don't carry around $40 to $70 cash in my wallet for gas.  I use my credit card and pay at the end of the month.  I will say that one of J. Jolly's stations in Johnston accepted my credit card.

What I say: Instead of telling us you have a plan. Write down your plan and submit it for review by the people. Massey has action behind his words. All you have is words. What plan do you have to balance our energy needs? How will you protect our water and air? Give us some meat to chew on if you want us to vote for you. So far, all I have seen from Anderson is talk. Re: Editor's note: And Obama has the great leaders of the failed Fannie and Freddie working as his economic advisors.

Rick Davis, Co-Campaign manager for McCain was the chief lobbyist for the Federal Homeowners Association that lobbied against any kind of regulation reform for Fannie and Freddie. He received millions to make sure that lawmakers passed no reforms for Fann/Fredd. This was all done during 2003-2006, while the Repubs still held majorities in both houses. There are no good ends to this story. While the government made it easier for unqualified borrowers to get mortgages, it was the underhanded mortgage brokers, greedy bankers, and rip-off investment bankers that have caused all this mess. These rip-off artists found loopholes in federal and state regulations and statutes and took us all for a ride as taxpayers. I do not think that CEOs of corps failing should receive "golden parachutes". The combination of housing busts, greed, and $12 billion a month to Iraq is going to break this country. The younger generation are going to have to pay for this mess with  enormous tax bills in the future.

Editor's note: I agree, but it is record that John McCain did try to force regulation of Fannie and Freddie in 2006 and Barney Frank and the Democrats stopped it saying there were no problems in either government funded company that Democrat party officials were controlling.

Across the state, responsible and engaged parents worry about their children in public school classrooms. Some see partisan instruction and government endorsement of certain behaviors as an affront to the values they teach in their homes. But the tax code punishes parents who home school or select private schools for their kids. All this begs the question:

You certainly sidestepped the comment on the Vandalisms with your spew of NAugusta and AikenCty.  Is NACC in Aiken county ?  North Augusta ?  You are all the time talking about NA taking over parts of Edgefield Cty and for them to stay the heck out.  Now you whine since they don't patrol or assist outside their jurisdiction ?  They assisted at the fire, as did a few others.  You get a ticket on Martintown Rd or something ?  Don't speed in NA, simple.  Why not let a private security firm do it and it will end.  Edgefield Cty sure isn't in a rush.

Editor's note: No, never had a speeding ticket in N.A. For your information, about half of the NACC is in the City limits of NA. We just get to do our and their job without their help. Typical. Granted, I know two officers that have recently joined the NAPD force and they are great officers, unlike the rest of the (solve the crime before you get there) Keystone mornons that work for the department. I have boycotted all things in N.A. for over five years and have no plans to stop now. I buy Edgefield County first, Columbia County second, and Richmond County last.

The wonderful Edgefield County Council thinks three deputies can patrol 507 square miles and be all things to all people and at all places...  I would bet the Sheriff's Office solves a higher percentage of serious crimes in EC than the NAPD does in their little city with ten times the officers.

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, in cluding Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Here are some tidbits about one person working for McCain. Fiorina was his top economic advisor. However, after lat week's performance and the embarassment she brought to the campaign, even though it was the truth, she has been moved to the background for now.

"Equally laughable is the McCain-Palin ticket’s born-again outrage over the greed of Wall Street C.E.O.’s. When McCain’s chief financial surrogate, Fiorina, was fired as Hewlett-Packard’s chief executive after a 50 percent drop in shareholders’ value and 20,000 pink slips, she took home a package worth $42 million.

The McCain campaign canceled Fiorina’s television appearances last week after she inadvertently admitted that Palin was unqualified to run a corporation".

$42 million after failing as CEO of Hewlett-Packard. This is the meat of what McCain believes in. The jobs of the middle class are of no concern; so long as the CEOs take home the bacon when they get fired.

Editor's note: And Obama has the great leaders of the failed Fannie and Freddie working as his economic advisors.

Editor's post: I get a real kick out of the line that there are “more Democrats than Republicans” in the United States in constant news reports about how the messiah Obama is not polling with double digit leads as they (the media) expects.

In the last 40 years only two Democrats have been elected as President. But I am supposed to believe the media when they pound the mantra that there are more Democrats than Republicans?

Then again, maybe they (the media and Democrats) are counting those in prison and in the country illegally as voters. You have to include your “base” when adding up the numbers I guess.  The Democrats are pushing an effort this year titled "felons can vote".  Edgefield County has seen more felons trying to get their records expunged in the last 7 months than they have in the last 15 years. So at least we know the Democrats are reaching their "base".

Just for the record, below are the results of the last 40 years of elections.

Republican Richard Nixon 1969-74
Republican Gerald Ford 1974-77
Democrat Jimmy Carter 1977-81
Republican Ronald Reagan 1981-89
Republican George H. Bush 1989-93
Democrat Bill Clinton 1994-2001
Republican George W. Bush 2001- present

If the record holds true Republicans get elected twice before a Democrat gets elected period. Seems 2008 isn't going to be their year. Maybe 2012? Watch Hillary and the Clinton machine bury Obama before November. After all, if Obama wins she is never going to get a chance to be president and that is not in the Clinton playbook.

It seems Democrats are reaching out to the animal population as well for a win in 2008. Take a look at this picture.

This is a politically unbiased group that interviews candidates thoroughly before they endorse anyone. The fact that they endorsed Greg Anderson over the incumbant shows how weak Shane really is. We need a debate bewteen the two opponents in the local State Senate race. We need to find out how the democratic contender will:
1) create jobs in the 25th district
2) bring a fair share of education dollars to the 25th district
3) expand access to quality, affordable health care and provide assistance to offset the cost of prescription medications
4) reduce class size in our schools
5) put more technology in the classroom

Does "forward thinking" mean he will raise our taxes? He seems out of touch because our state government had a defict of at least $100 million dollars last fiscal year. Shawn Massey is working hard with real action, while the democratic contender has just words. He seems to be a real "blowhard", kind of like that muslim fella running for President.

Editor's note: How is it the responsibility of "government" to provide jobs, health care, and medications to individuals? Heck, if they are going to do all that, how about fuel costs. Should "government" pay for my gas too? If they did it would be rationed, just like all of the above would be if it is under "government control".

Todd Palin has refused to testify in Trooper-Gate. It seems that the First "Dud" was the muscle of the operation. When someone did not do what Sarah wanted, he would step in and break a few bones. Why would Todd be CCed on government business emails to his personal email accounts. I think most people are starting to realize that Sarah and Todd were part of an Organized Crime racket up in Alaska. It was their way or no way. That's democracy at its finest.
Just this past week there was a 20 year old young woman who was convicted of huffing some kind of chemicals while driving. She wrecked her vehicle and injured the passengers in the vehicle. She was sentenced to 6 years time in the a state corrections facility. If she is serving hard time, it only seems fair that D. Fraley should serve at least 15 years for killing a pedestrian when he was driving while intoxicated. We need to find out exactly who D. Fraley's parents know in local government to receive such favorable treatment.
I am still waiting on those emails that state which churches in Edgefield county allow women to serve as deacons. I have seen no submissions so far. If a woman is qualified to serve as VP, she must be equally qualified to serve as a deacon at a church.
Have a great day!

I want to know who paid off the refs in south aiken? We should have won by 50 points!!!! They called everything back. They (threw) flags on almost all of our plays and touchdowns. What a crock. But the Rebs are better than that and Coach Sawyer showed you can beat a football team and the refs.

Editor's note: I did not see the game (I did listen on the radio) and it did seem there were more flags thrown on the ground than there was after the Democratic Convention. I know the announcers were amazed at some of the calls. However, I believe they went both ways during the game. A lot of them were silly mistakes on both sides of the ball for both teams. The two punt returns for touchdowns called back were heartbreaking.

Editor's note: Fox Creek had an impressive win, but I am not sure if two wins in four years in being "on a roll". I will say that Fox Creek is playing a schedule that is out of their league this year and should be congratulated on their victory over C.A. Johnson.

Editor's note: The Rebels looked great Friday night, but South Aiken was 0-3 coming into the game. Not much of a big victory in my opinion. N. Augusta was a good test of the Rebels abilities and Silver Bluff (next week) will be a challenge. Region play has yet to begin too. The last thing the Rebels need to do is get overconfident and end up having their hat handed to them by lesser teams. Right now they are firing on all cylinders, but it only takes one cylinder to shut down to leave the car sitting disabled on the side of the road.

Dear Mr. Editor,
I enjoy Edgefield Daily and want to say what a great resource you provide. I have been reading for about 2 years and I am impressed with the level of coverage (by EdgefieldDaily.com). Thank you for everything you do. I have also been doing some research on (Sen.) Strom Thurmond for a few months and I cannot find information on (Sen.) Thurmond's estate in Edgefield County. I have checked the probate court and the county archives. I know he was born here and died here. Any suggestions?

Editor's note: Sen. Thurmond's estate was handled in Aiken County even though he was born, lived, and died in Edgefield County.

Re: Editor's note: It is late (1:30 am) and I have not looked at the link. However, if true, 138 Democrats voted in favor of the deregulation you blame. I still don't know what that has to do with the undeniable links to Clinton's involvement and his former cabinet members that headed up the failed companies. You just seem to continue to overlook that fact.

What does jobs cabinet members got after they left office have to do with Phil Gramm writing and sponsoring the legislation that you claim is what got our system to where we are today?

At the end of the day, people leave gov't all the time and take jobs in the private sector.  It is what they while in office that matters to us in this situation.  And the fact is that the legislation you blame on todays problems was written by, sponsored by and a majority of the votes for it were from Republicans.

What are your thoughts on Wendy Gramm (Phil's wife) and Enron Board of Directors member making $900,000 per year from Enron while Phil was paving the way for "Enron style energy trading".

Editor's note: Who got all the campaign contributions from Freddie and Fannie after these Democrats left the administration while Clinton was still in office? Who ignored what they were doing even though they were found to have "cooked the books" and are now paying millions in fines (funny how they never go to jail).

No argument from me on Gramm or McCain (Keating Five ring a bell?). But Clinton used legislation passed by Jimmy Carter (the worst President ever) ie: the Community Redevelopment Act, to force lending companies (under threat of federal fines) to loan money to people they knew could not pay it back. So who brought this on? Clinton or Bush?

Was Joel Jolly's explanation letter about higher gas prices unnecessarily snippy, or did I misunderstand?
web posted September 20, 2008

Enough with the bickering about price gouging!!! Has anyone ever heard of replacement cost? Gas stations are lucky to profit .05 to .10 cents per gallon. Their profit comes when YOU go in the store to buy 12 ounces of WATER for $1.69. You do the math. And for the person who claims they had 5 gallons of water in their gas tank, don't blame the station you bought it from, find out what terminal they were supplied from and blame them. For your information, gas stations do not make or blend their own product, refineries produce the product and terminals blend the ethanol and distribute the product.

Editor's note: Terminals do not provide mixed fuels in this area as far as I am aware. An ethanol fueling station is located at the corner of Stephens Road and Hyw 25. Drivers pick up their gas product then stop by the ethanol terminal and top off their tanks. The fuel is "mixed" during transport.

Ethanol has a very short "Shelf-life" and is not mixed with gasoline for that reason according to information I have been provided

I notice that someone has posted the voting results of S.900 so you and your readers can see how it breaks down.  How did this get started, you blamed the Democratic controlled congress for the sub prime lending crisis stating

Editor's note: Those darn Democrats in control of Congress sitting back and letting this happen on their watch. We should run them all out of office.

Then you have stated that it is Clinton's fault, cause he started all of it, stating of a law that passed in 1999. The facts of the voting seem pretty clear, and it seems hard to imagine how in all this time only Dems are too blame.  As a Republican, I'd like to know that LOCALLY my fellow Republicans are stating the facts and not distorting the view.  I expect that no matter the party affiliation.  MORE IMPORTANTLY, I understand that there is a perception of us that we are dumb down her in the south, but how do we expect to make things better by simply running all Dems out of office.  I believe that you have a level of intelligence, let's use it responsibly like we know you are capable of.

Thank You Sir

Editor's note: No, I have pointed out several times, and with links, that the events that set everything in motion took place over the 8 years of Clinton's term. I have never blamed just the Democrats. But they are the ones trying to blame only Republicans so I point out how they are more responsible than anyone else. It was not Republican Presidential cabinet members that were run off under a cloud of corruption and fines and SEC violations for their CEO jobs with Freddie and Fannie. It would suit me fine to throw out at least 500 of the 535 members of Congress that allowed this to happen. I would put the remaining 35 on probation.

In response to Aiken Electrics' (Co-op) management/board of trustees- the board will buy (believe) anything he Gary (ceo) will tell them. He will present them with charts and graphs to win them over to his way of thinking, such as putting all the employees on a 9/80 work week (everyone has every other friday or monday off, INCLUDING SALARIED EMPLOYEES), then hiring parttime help on the days that the others are off! All this on top of doing away with co. cars for himself and 6 V.P.s and 2 area directors, claiming to save money by giving very generous car allowances, instead of co. cars. The board in my opinion is either scared of him, gullable, crooked, or not very good honest business people.

Introduced by Gramm (Republican) in the Sentate.  Winning votes 54-44.  All 54 votes in favor were Republican.  All 44 votes against were Democrat.

Introduced by the house by Bliley (Republican) in the House.  Winning votes  334-86.  Republicans in favor 205-16.  Dems in favor 138-69.  http://clerk.house.gov/evs/1999/roll276.xml

How was this the Dems fault again?  No sponsors of the legislation and every vote against it in the Senate came from a Democrat.

Undoing the New Deal protections did this.  For someone to think this is a Democratic Party position is laughable at best.

In a nutshell, only 16 Republicans voted against the deregulation that got us where we are today.

And how did John McSame vote?  McCain (R-AZ), Yea   Of course he supported it, as he is funditmentally a deregulator!

Re: Editor's note: "The whole catalyst of the leading fallout (Fannie and Freddie) which is leading to other banks and institutions failing can be traced to Pres. Clinton in the 1990's.  That was when his administration forced, under penalty of law, leading companies to offer loans to people they knew could not pay for the loans which created the sub-prime lending scam. In fact, Clinton cabinet members joined the companies and got paid hundreds of millions of dollars and left under investigation (never hear that in the news do you?).

When the Democrats took over Congress they would not allow investigations and regulators to act to prevent the crisis they now want to blame on Pres. Bush. Granted, I blame Pres. Bush for not using the bully pulpit to scream this from the mountain tops, but he didn't.

When you hear the term "affordable housing" think "welfare housing" because the people in those homes are wanting taxpayers to pay for them being in a house they cannot afford. I am already paying for a house, I have no interest or desire to pay for someone else's house and that is what the Democrats are wanting me, you, and every other taxpayer to do.  "

1.  So, it was the undoing of New Deal policies that led to this?  Is that what you just said?
2.  The Dems took over Congress in Jan 2007.  This law was passed in 1999.  Are you saying that from the time it passed in 1999 to Jan 2007, everything was fine?   Please explain the timeframe you are referring to in the second paragraph.

What was Phil Gramm's role in your opinion in this deregulation?

Which major party, Dems or Republican is generally seen as the de-regulators?  This one is easy.

Looking back on privatizing Social Security....do you wish our Social Securities funds were tied to these Wall Street losses?  Who's idea was privatizing SS?  I'd say there is plenty of blame to go around.  At the core, the two major parties are both beholden to large corporations and really only offer slight differences to us voters.

Editor's note: First off, the privatization of SS funds was limited to 5% of the total investment in the system, not the whole thing and it could be passed on as an investment (you only lose money if you sell when the market is down). I agree both parties are responsible. However, as the market was fueled by overleveraging in the secondary market for subprimes, vis-a-vis mortgaged-backed securities traded on Wall Street, the seed was planted in the '90s by Clinton and his social engineers. They were the political catalyst behind this slow-motion financial train wreck as the Investment Business Daily reported.

And it was the Clinton administration that mismanaged the quasi-governmental agencies (Freddie Mack and Fannie Mae) that over the decades have come to manage the real estate market in America. As soon as Clinton crony Franklin Delano Raines took the helm in 1999 at Fannie Mae, for example, he used it as his personal piggy bank, looting it for a total of almost $100 million in compensation by the time he left in early 2005 under an ethical cloud.

Other Clinton cronies, including Janet Reno aide Jamie Gorelick (who inserted the wall that led to the 9/11 attacks because information could not be shared between the CIA and the FBI), padded their pockets to the tune of another $75 million. (You know, those "greedy" rich Republi... I mean Democrats).

Raines was accused of overstating earnings and shifting losses so he and other senior executives could earn big bonuses. In the end, Fannie had to pay a record $400 million civil fine for SEC and other violations, while also agreeing as part of a settlement to make changes in its accounting procedures and ways of managing risk.

But it was too little, too late. Raines had reportedly steered Fannie Mae business to subprime giant Countrywide Financial, which was saved from bankruptcy by Bank of America.

Those are not my words, they are those of the above linked Investment Business Daily.

Explain how the blame rests at the feet of Republicans other than allowing Democrats to get away with this. Again, I blame both parties - one for doing it, the other for allowing it. McCain did try to pass a bill to stop it, but it was beat down by the Democrats when they took over Congress. That is not opinion, that is fact.

I am no supporter of McCain so don't think I am trying to bolster him. I will vote Republican for President because of Gov. Sarah Palin. Maybe the Democrats are right and she really is just a "heartbeat away from being President".

This is in reference to concerns at MMS.  It is incumbent upon and the very first responsibility of the teachers and administration of every school:  SAFETY of the students.  Then, they educate them.  Teachers will in the future and have had in the past to make split second and bold safety decisions that can mean the life or death of a student.  Whether it be a medical problem or, God forbid, an intruder intent on harming someone at the school, there is absolutely no room for compromise on this issue.  It has been said in the past that this is not the first time that this teacher has "over-medicated" and that it has actually happened already more than one time this year.  There is NO difference in me drinking an alcoholic beverage to the point of intoxication and then going to my place of work or taking activity-prohibitive pain medication and driving my car to my place of work (removed).  EITHER would put me in a place of compromise to the safety of my co-workers, never mind if I taught children.  The culpability lies directly on the shoulders of the MMS Principal that, once made aware of the situation, must take SOME sort of action.  The teacher's decision yesterday to take drugs that resulted in some sort of inappropriate absence from the classroom was cause enough for the Principal to (allegedly become involved).  It is going to be interesting to see just how the situation at MMS will be swept under the rug.  Too many eyes will be on this one.  It would be safe to say that two eyes belonging to the teacher released last year, will be litigiously observing the actions or lack of actions taken.  Principal, HR Director, Superintendent, we will be watching and we will be waiting.  Enough is enough.

So if the whole catalyst of the leading fallout (Fannie and Freddie) which is leading to other banks and institutions failing can be traced to Pres. Clinton in the 1990's is actually the case, then why didn't the Republican controlled Congress do anything about it from 2000-2006, seems they had the chance.
As complex as the policy was to increase homeownership, it is equally complex to distribute blame for its failing. Mortgage brokers steered borrowers to loans that they could not afford. Appraisers inflated their objectivity under lender pressure to drive real estate prices. Lenders relaxed underwriting standards and failed to uphold the consumer's ability to repay. Real estate agents drove up market prices because mortgage rates were at historic lows. Wall Street bought securities regardless of underwriting standards because of performance. Government regulators were driving toward unattainable homeownership levels. And consumers wanted loan amounts to feed their lifestyle and housing wants, disregarding prudence in favor of the bigger.

I don't believe that Clinton Cabinet members were making money on this.  Freddie Mac Chairman and Chief Executive Richard Syron pocketed nearly $19.8 million in compensation last year, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission, even though the company's stock lost half its value in 2007.  There are indications and reports that this CEO ignored warnings as far back as four years ago.  Does not seem like we can just blame Democrats, or our 04 Jan 2007 to present Congress.  I am interested to understand your thinking on this.

Editor's post: I have recieved many comments on this subject and rather than post them all, some could not be posted due to content, I have selected this one and will have an Editor's note at the end of the post.

Yesterday (Monday) was a very eventful day at STHS as the news of a teacher (that has not been named as a suspect) in the death of his wife surfaced. The teacher had not been in school in several weeks. My question is simply why were the parents of the students in this class not informed about the incidents and the reason that the teacher was on leave. I am appalled that the school district hired someone who was being investigated in a matter of such enormity. What is our Director of Personnel actually paid to do? Wouldn’t it be her job to thoroughly check out applicants before they are allowed to become involved with our students? Was is Dr. Crenshaw’s involvement in the matter? Is our school board trying to withhold information from us and endanger the lives of our children. This teacher now has the names of our children and the contact information. What will the school district do to ensure that all of our children are protected?

I understand confidentiality and how it affects any employer. But news of this immensity needs to be revealed as it pertains to the safety of our students. It is alarming that Dr. Crenshaw, Mr. Shifflet and others have not expressed concern in this matter.

We need to make sure that ALL students are safe and secure. Witholding information from parents is not the key to improving communication.

Editor's note: I have the name of the teacher and have confirmed that he is no longer in a classroom in the school system. I have not confirmed whether he has been placed on leave, resigned, or been fired. That is a personnel matter at this time. He was hired this year and the issue came up about two weeks ago.

At this time he has not been named as a suspect in his wife's death, but he is not cooperating with investigators so they can clear him in the case. I do know that lawyers are involved in the situation at the school so I am withholding certain information until I talk to at least one side in the matter.

Again, the man in question has never been named as a suspect in the murder. As such, a background check would not show anything derogatory on his record. If he had applied to be a police officer it would have been revealed that he was questioned in the investigation of a crime in the check.

That is about all of the information I can provide at this time. I will be following up on the matter in the days to come.

District rules/policies are being broken, students are being neglected, and teachers are behaving unethically (i.e. over medicated at school). I am not talking about a situation that occured last year---I am talking about something that happened TODAY with one of my child's teachers.  I realize there are some great teachers at this school, and my children have been fortunate enough to have some of them. However, I am tired of sitting back while students continue to suffer at the hands of those teachers who don't belong in the classroom and  administrators who can't do their jobs. Editor's note: I feel you pain. Our electric bill from Aiken Electric Cooperative has almost doubled over the last few months. Maybe if they would cut out all those expensive trips for board members to Las Vegas and other resorts for "meetings", plus gifts and other goodies, we could lower our bills.

How can one be a christian jihadist? Not knowing the true definitionof jihad or the noun jihadist I researched the definition of the word. according to more than one dictionary, a Jihad is defined as a Muslim holy war or spiritual struggle against infidels. or  a crusade or struggle However a  Jihadist is defined only as a Muslim who is invovled in Jihad. My question is what is a chrisitian jihadist?and as far as church structure and leadership being sexist, arent the Democrats the same ones that  were all for Hillary being the VP choice for Obama and yet now we have been informed women cant support Palin because shes a woman and your church will not allow you to vote for her?  All I have to say is HUH? Again, Shane Massey shows his forward thinking.  South Carolina needs to be ready to move forward for its citizens.  The potential for holding down the cost of energy and to grow economically is limited only by the restraints placed on the great minds and hearts of the American citizens.  We should be rewarding those people/companies who put our national interests first.  Encouraging companies already located in S. C.to develop new products and inviting other companies to locate here to participate in this growth, through incentives for all, will create jobs not just for the citizens here but across the nation.

If you want to make a more immediate impact on our dependence on oil, auto makers should be encouraged to begin production of new vehicles to run on natural/propane gas or hydrogen and to develop as inexpensively as possible a mechanism to retrofit vehicles to run on these fuels.  There are many cars and trucks on the road today whose owners cannot afford a new vehicle but with tax incentives could afford to convert.  Research has been going on for years.  We need to reward and encourage those efforts not just on the east coast but every area of the United States.  Methane gas is already being used successfully from land-fills.  Natural gas is available throughout the US but the infrastructure is not there to deliver to the many homeowners/businesses who would benefit.

It is not just drill here, drill now but a comprehensive effort by all citizens to reduce our dependence on foreign energy.  Those companies who locate in the US but send their profits into other countries should not be rewarded.  Illegal aliens should not be rewarded for profiting from our citizens and sending income back to their homeland.  If they want to receive the benefit from working and living in this great nation, they should do so legally, and participate fully in supporting the US.

Will we be voting for Shane?  You bet we will!

Re: I hate to tell Sen. Obama, Democrats, and the media, Jesus was not a community organizer, He is the Son of God. They would know that if they knew Christ.

Wow, you know Christ. What was his favorite color? What were his views on raping the earth of its natural resources? How many times have you interviewed him? You may know his words or the words that others have written about him, but your knowledge is as one would say in court "hearsay". Christ studied Judaism. The Last Supper was a Passover Seder. What is a Seder big fellow? I mean you will probably Google it and find out what it is, but that proves nothing. Christ observed three major holidays per year during his lifetime. Do you know what they were? He didn't celebrate Christmas, that's for sure. Christ believed in helping the poor. He thought that those with more in life needed to help those with less. He brought people together who had common interests. When others call him a "community organizer", they say it metaphorically. Why do people hate "community organizers" so much? The National Wild Turkey Foundation was started by community organizers.
People in communities recognized that there were others who had turkey hunting interests in commom and so they started forming groups in there communities. Community organizers formed E.C.C.H.O. which a consortium of churches in EC that share a common interest of helping others. All grass roots organizations are started by community organizers. You started your website because people in the community had an interest in knowing the truth about what is happening in EC and surrounding communities. You, my friend, are a type of community organizer. So let's not bash people who organize groups of people with common interests. Even the Constitution says that we have the right to form community groups. You always tell me to read the Constitution, so I do it more often these days. Sarah Palin actually wants to take that right away. Maybe if you stopped reading World.Net so much you would have an open mind to the world in which we inhabit.

Editor's note: Yes, I know Jesus personally. I talk to Him on a daily basis. I would be happy to introduce you to Him.

I'm glad to hear you are reading the Constitution. So you can now show me where all these wonderful government programs you tout so heavily are promulgated under the enumerated powers of the federal government in the constitution. Welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, Education, Social Security, minimum wages, and on and on. Show me just one that can be justified by the constitution. Just one...

I then filed my complaint, I also spoke to Senator Massey about the situation . As of today DSS has not  followed up on my complaint. On August 21, after my call again went unreturned by DSS headquarters, I filed a complaint with the governors office . I was assurend they'would answer  the governor" about this.  I called my contact in the governors office today because again, no reponse from any agency. The contact at the governors office was rude and obviously has no intention of making DSS answer these charges. I was told very rudely and matter of factly they have to give them a certain amount of time to answer the complaint and as of yet they had not received any response or information about my case from  DSS.and they had to give them all the time it required. which ,apparently in political backspeak means " I will not investigate your claim because you cant make me. I will give them all the time I want to until you give up I have no intention of investigating  a claim  of discrimination against a state agency  and you cant make me do it." Yes that is exactly how I was talked to by the Governors office  If they think I will forget about the complaint and move on They are very mistaken.I will give them the "time" they desire but I expect an answer when that time comes. I am tired of this particular agency constantly failing the people of SC. Its time they finally were made to explain their  actions and behavior.

A good while back, I remember reading where someone or some company, were giving thier older golf carts to the towns in Edgefield county. If my memory serves me correctly, Captain Chris Wash used the one donated to Johnston, to ride the sidestreets and neighborhoods when the sheriffs dept. was handling law enforcement in Johnston. For a long time I, and others here, have been seeing the police chief's wife and kids riding around  on one to her place of business, home and other places. What we would like to know is, "Is this golf cart the one donated for town use or is it one they have bought?" Also, it's my understanding that it's illegal to ride a golf cart on sidewalks or in the street. Can anyone give some answers to these questions? If it belongs to the town, then we all want our turns to use the golf cart, also, if the police chiefs family can. We could save gas and not have to walk in this awful heat ourselves. I've had quite a few citizens ask me if I know what the deal is,so I'm passing this on to you, (Editor), since you are the one who seems to be able to get answers best,in this county. Thanking you for all you do for us. A Citizen.

Editor's note: A special permit can be issued in Johnston to use golf carts on city streets (access to state roads is not allowed as I understand) if the cart meets certain requirements. In past conversations I believe Chief Aston stated he purchased the golf cart in question. I will recheck to confirm my recollection.

I am an Independent voter. I watched parts of both conventions and must admit when I turned to C-SPAN one of the nights I agreed with Ron Paul during his rally more than any other politician this season. One mantra I did hear on the "red" nights was "Drill Here! Drill Now!" Just wanted to know if my esteemed neighbors in this column could answer some questions I have or maybe even contact their representative in the government to find out their positions.

1. Whose oil is off the cost of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina? Does it belong to America or does it belong to the states or a combination of the two? Or does it belong to multinational corporations.
2. Will the companies that drill for the oil be American companies or will they be multi-national corporations whose stock holders are based in China and the Middle East?
3. Will the oil drilled be placed on the "Global Market" to drive prices down over the world or will it be
controlled by our industry/government and reduce our imports?
4. Will American steel workers, engineers, and laborers build, design, operate, and provide the materials for the pipe systems and platforms or will multinational corporations contract these functions to third world countries?
5. Will any of our politicians answer these questions before we - "Drill Here! Drill Now!"
6. Will folks demand answers to these questions before we proceed?

As Americans we have been sold a "bill of goods" in global economy more than once. Our energy policy must balance the needs of our economy and the environment, but more than anything else, place America first. Whoever addresses these questions will get my vote. Otherwise I will write in Charles Kemp or Ken Durham or (the Editor). :)

How many of the churches you attend only allow MALE deacons? Raise your hands. That's what I thought, very few. That's what gets me about Christian Jihadists; you'll support an idiot for VP, but you will not give a woman any say in the financial decisions of a church. What are all you Christian Jihadists hiding? I volunteered with the Augusta unit after Katrina, and was sent to Texas to help with a medical shelter. I was gone for 10 days and it was one of the best experiences ever. Re:  The gas prices

Thursday evening my daughter started receiving phone calls regarding a gas shortage due to Ike and how she needed to get gas immediately because the price was going to increase to $5.00 within hours.  It seems that one local gas station owner had told his employees that they needed to fill up as the prices were going to sky rocket.   Apparently these employees started calling their friends who in turn called their friends and so on.  I explained to my daughterr that this type of action and response would only serve to create a gas buying panic and subsequent shortages.  Gas at this particular chain of stations was $3.479 Thursday when I came home from work.  It jumped to $3.729 by Friday morning and $4.179 by Friday afternoon.  At this point, the pumps were dry as were those at many gas stations around North Augusta.

The price increases I feel were price gouging.  And the public's reaction was just crazy.  According to the news, the refineries in Houston were not shutting down until Friday so there should have been gas in the pipeline and plenty available in the Sweetwater tanks.  Unless the refineries take a direct hit and sustain major damage, they are going to get back up and running as soon as possible.  So the gas supply might sustain a temporary interruption at most.  Have we lost our ability to weather the storm?

Is this true? Subject: Dr. Jack Wheeler Regarding Barack Hussein   Obama.
Written by Dr. Jack Wheeler
The O-man, Barack Hussein Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit. No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the economy works, no understanding of how the world works, no balls, nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of real substance.

He has no real identity. He is half-white, which he rejects. The rest of him is mostly Arab, which he hides but is disclosed by his non-African Arabic surname and his Arabic first and middle names as a way to triply proclaim his Arabic parentage to people in Kenya . Only a small part of him is African Black from his Luo grandmother, which he pretends he is exclusively.

What he isn't, not a genetic drop of, is 'African-American,' the descendant of enslaved Africans brought to America chained in slave ships. He hasn't a single ancestor who was a  slave. Instead, his Arab ancestors were slave owners. Slave-trading was the main Arab business in East Africa for centuries until the British ended it.

Let that sink in: Obama is not the descendant of slaves, he is the descendant of slave owners. Thus he makes the perfect Liberal Messiah.

It's something Hillary doesn't understand - how some complete neophyte came out of the blue and stole the Dem nomination from her. Obamamania is beyond politics and reason. It is a true religious cult, whose adherents reject Christianity yet still believe in Original Sin, transferring it from the evil of being human to the evil of being white.

Thus Obama has become the white liberals' Christ, offering absolution from the Sin of Being White. There is no reason or logic behind it, no faults or flaws of his can diminish it, no arguments Hillary could make of any kind can be effective against it. The absurdity of Hypocrisy Clothed In Human Flesh being their Savior is all the more cause for liberals to worship him: Credo quia absurdum, I believe it because it is absurd.

Thank heavens that the voting majority of Americans remain Christian and are in no desperate need of a phony savior.

His candidacy is ridiculous and should not be taken seriously by any thinking American.

Sarah Palin is a lying, war-loving, hack. In 1968, Nixon-Agnew won the election and look what happened. If the Jesus freaks get there way, we can expect more corruption, more war , more poverty, more high gas prices, and more of our soldiers giving their lives to a war (Iraq, not Afhan.)that started over oil and money. Who you gonna blame then Mr. Editor? The more I read your rhetoric, it has  become more apparent that you are an insane idiot. You say you are against the increase in the minimum wage, but if there were no minimum wage, then that would create more jobs for undocumented workers. However, you blame undocumented workers for taking low paying jobs because no Americans will work for low wages. Even though the raise in the minimum wage benefits people in your own family. You drum up support for the war, but have any of your children signed up for the armed services? What are your views on the failures of financial institutions? Do you blame the  failures of Bear-Stearns and Lehman on the Dems also? Many of the large financial institutions are failing because of Repub actions in the past with deregulation and no one minding the store. Even John Kyl ( a staunch conservative from Arizona) admitted this past weekend that Repub deregulation of financial institutions is the single largest factor in the downturn of the economy. As far as Sarah Palin is concerned, one of her recent accomplishments was to enact the largest windfall profits tax on oil companies in Alaska. Every citizen of Alaska was refunded $3,000. This is the same exact policy that Obama wants to put into place. Palin wants to go to war with Russia. It seems that Palin is ignorant of the fact that we are so overextended with troops in Iraq and Afghan. that we could not help Georgia or the Ukraine if we wanted. Go ahead and elect idiot Palin. It would be the best medicine for you ignorant $&*@s. You deserve someone as naive and unprepared for national leadership as idiot Palin.

Editor's note: There are so many lies in your post I will not take the time to counter them all. Note, however, that gas prices skyrocketed after the Democrats took control of Congress. In addition, in case you forgot, Obama is running against McCain, not Palin. Granted, Gov. Palin has ten times more executive experience than Obama (he has none, please try to prove that fact wrong).

As for the "Jesus Freaks" comment. If you fear Jesus' followers (and, I have to admit the Bible says those who hate Christians hate Jesus: ie: Liberal Democrats) why is your party so desperate to compare Obama to Jesus? Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen compares Obama to Jesus "who the Minister just prayed to" on House Floor and called
Gov. Palin, in essence, Pilot, who oversaw Jesus' crucifixion. Don't take my word for it, watch the Democrat idiot do it on video. That is really going to go over well with Christians. And the talking point has been repeated by liberal media talking heads.

What was your previous savior -  the "first black president"- Bill Clinton before he was elected? Oh yeah, that's right - a governor.

Who is the party of dumb as a stump stupid and hypocrisy?

McCain was in a POW camp serving his country and Obama snuggles up with
1960s radical William Bill Ayers who carried out terrorist attacks on... America and a radical
(WARNING: Obama's preachers comments are vile) anti-white preacher Jeremiah Wright There is a resume for president to be proud of.

Face it, you liberals know you have an empty suit for a candidate, and even the liberal UPI is reporting that the liberal media attacking Gov. Palin is going to backfire because she, as a VP pick, has more experience that your Presidential candidate (again, who has none). That is why Democrat fund raisers are now telling their candidates to back away from Obama. He is an idiot that chose a VP that said he would vote for McCain over Obama (Biden).

I am SO enjoying this election. I can't wait until the debates.

Oh, don't forget who the Russians support for President... Obama. And who is calling Obama a muslim?  Muslims. Maybe he made that point clear while he was visiting the 57 states (of Islam?).

By the way, how does Obama get off claiming to be black (which he isn't) when he is half Arab Muslim decent and half white and his muslim forefathers were slave traders and his father was a communist party official?

By the way, note I backed my comments up with a majority of reports from the liberal media or video of him and his supporters, you just spouted lies that
even the liberal media has proven to be false.

So-called "gains" don't match up with SAT and ACT scores, and the State's grading methods are very controversial. Now there is evidence that local school officials have been further skewing the process, even helping students cheat! In response to the writer, concerning Mt. Canan and Rev. Brightharp.  (Content emoved) I tried for a long time to refrain and will continue to do so, but you are missing the point - all because your continue to be misled!
First, The bible states,"For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God".  Understand that you, I and , your Pastor have sinned.  God already knows that.  It is not my place, your place, nor your Pastor's place to point out other people's sins.  Now, I know personally that your Pastor does this and continues to do this from the pulpit and out of the pulpit!  So let's not be so fast to right one person and wrong the other.
Secondly, the bible states,"God is not the author of confusion..".  You can't pray over MESS nor preach over MESS and THINK that God's presence will remain in a place of MESS.  Sure there are  good people there and not so good people also.  That is the case in every church(black, white, and other)...Folks who consider themselves "spiritual"  are sometimes the biggest HELLRAISERS! If you plan on making it to HEAVEN you better live the WORD!  For beginners:  Love your enemies, by this time your knees should be black from praying so much you won't have time to throw rocks at each other.  Mt. Canan is in a sad state because of the (removed) leadership, unspiritual members - so ready to talk about other churches, and believers that do not study the Word.  If you or anybody else there plans on making it to Heaven-don't entrust your soul to man(Brightharp)-you'll get disappointed everytime.  Rather trust God with your heart, mind , and soul.  Keep Praying!

To the blotter that wrote its ok for an officer to dip/spit in court, (let me get this right) so that means it’s ok for defenders to dip also because what’s right for one is right for all. So next court session let’s tell ALL to bring their spit cups and have a ball. For one thing it’s not sanitary, (that’s just nasty in public-even more in a courthouse, Yuk!), I don’t recall the writer saying anything about death, you brought that up and since you did, have you checked out any medical terms on this: Here it is: smokeless tobacco, n chewing tobacco (leaves) or tobacco powder (snuff) that allows the nicotine to be absorbed through the mucous membrane of the oral cavity or digestive tract. It is related to a high risk of oral cancer. Can contain abrasives such as sand, pesticides, and sugar for taste. It is not a substitute for cigarettes.

If you think smokeless tobacco is "up to snuff" and safe, think again. Whatever it is called - spitting, chewing or dipping - it is every bit as dangerous as smoking. A lot of medical professionals believe more so because users are not as aware of the dangers. Cancers of the lips, mouth, tongue and throat can quickly grow in people who use smokeless tobacco and cause ugly - even lethal - results.

And that’s only two reasons’ he shouldn’t be spitting in court or anywhere else….

The media is so biased anymore it ain't funny. They don't even hide it. If it was McCain that said it it would be 24-7 news everyday. Here is the video. Look at it. Obama never bats an eye when he says his "muslim faith." Slip of the tougne? I doubt it. This is the same guy that said he was almost done visting all 57 states. There are 57 ISLAMIC STATES. How many times does he have to prove it before people wake up to this half breed Muslim sleeper trying to get in the White House? For the past month, I have read the comments regarding the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church.  It saddens me that church members would discuss this matter and their opinions in such harsh ways.  My understanding has always been that according to the Church Covenant, if you are dissatisfied with your place of worship, the option is there to leave and worship elsewhere.  It is so easy to blame others, but a major self examination needs to be done of ourselves.  I find it hard to believe that individuals will be so quick to judge when the BIBLE clearly states "Ye with out sin cast the first stone."  In reading the recent comments, Rev. Brightharp's character has been degraded and torn down by individuals who claim to be Christians.  Let's not forget that we all have sinned and come short of the glory of GOD.  The Rev. Geroge Brightharp that I know has grown spiritually since this incident took place a year ago.  Not only has he grown, but the spirit in the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church has moved to a higher level.  To the reader that commented about Rev. Brightharp preaching about and trying to bring unity to the church family, Rev. Brightharp can only preach the word, it is up to each individual to open their hearts to receive it.  If your hearts are hardened, then quite naturally you won't receive anything.  Some seem so quick to lash out and judge and point fingers, but fail to realize their own problems and shortcomings.  I couldn't believe my eyes when I read about deacons and minsters with illegitamate children, and people with DUI orders, when there are so many people amongst us dealing with their own issues such as alcoholism, drug addictions, and not to mention men beating their wives and thinking it is OK.  So, let's not be so quick to judge.  Please get your own home in order before you try to get GOD's house in order.  And do what has happened, make a MESS.  GOD wi ll not bless a MESS!!!  For the reader that commented about pur ging needs to be done.  I agree.  And it has already started.  Get ready for a new Mt. Canaan.  For those of you not satisfied with the wonderful leadership of Rev. Brightharp, here's a bit of advice.  If you are looking for a better Pastor, pray for the one that you have!!!  GOD BLESS!!!!

Editor's note: This is far from over and will be back in court before long. From the information I have, Rev. Brightharp might have a lot of explaining to do.

I saw the comment about the officer chewing tobacco at the courthouse and the complaint was that this was the same as smoking in a public office.  Why is it that it's fashionable - and acceptable - to prevent others from doing things that don't harm you but you find distasteful?  The number of proven deaths in the US from secondhand smoking is zero.  The number of deaths from secondhand spit is also zero.  The use of these products is limited to those above a certain age, banned almost everywhere, and excessively taxed.  Yet a thousand people die from taking aspirin every year, and a 8 year old can buy a bottle and down it anywhere.

How about we use some common sense and quit the crusade against tobacco products?  Worrying about protecting our borders, ports, and airports, and yes, courthouses, from real security threats rather than complaining about some officer spitting into a cup makes a lot of sense to me.

How do you go from having a rewarding career to being unemployed with no money and having to seek government assistance?  I'll tell you ---- Work for the Edgefield County School District that's how.  As a former employee, I now see that Edgefield County's School District does not have the student's best interest at heart.  After what they did to me and now I'm reading about SRO Reel, it confirms to me that people with power are truly something else.

I know first hand what the people in power of that school board and the people in administration can do to you when you seem to "ruffle" a few feathers.  You see I was terminated for what they called a "violation of my contract".  They (more specifically Mrs. Human Resources) have told numerous lies to keep from doing what is right by someone they have wronged.  The superintendent told me to resign instead of letting them terminate me so that I wouldn't be "black-balled" as she put it but in the end they black balled me anyway.  I want to say to Mrs. Human Resources, Dr. Superintendent, and Mr. Former Principal, "Thank you".  Thank you for helping me to see that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the bridge.  You all have become my sand paper.  All the lies and manipulating that you have done won't bring you prosperity.  In the end when I come out of this, I'll be on top.  And you... you'll still be that sandpaper.  Worn out.

To the dedicated teachers of Edgefield County who go to those schools everyday and give so much of yourselves without looking for anything in return or for any type of gain except for those students to succeed, I say keep going.  I ask the citizens and employees of Edgefield to do what's right for those kids.  Stand up for what's right.  You all know that what they're doing to SRO Reel is wrong!  I'm joining this fight because I didn't get a fair chance.  Give him one.  Those kids and that school need him.  I know first hand what he does for STHS and what he gives.  Give something back to him and right the wrong of the district.

She replied, 'I'd give houses to all the homeless people.'

'Wow...what a worthy goal.' I told her, 'You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my drive, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use
toward a new house.'

She thought that over for a few seconds while her Mom glared at me, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, 'Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?'

And I said, 'Welcome to the Republican Party.' Her folks still aren't talking to me.

Not only is he the chief security at the school, but he also teaches drug and alcohol awareness and safety class, Prom Promise, Students Against Drunk Driving, provides security at many extracurricular activities, is in charge of the safety plans at the schools and attends Board and discipline hearings when required. He also is in charge of student ID's, parking, and any other duties assigned by the principal. He develops a rapport with all students regardless of gender or ethnicity - that is why the hot line has been successful. The kids trust him and that is why they tell him things. Let's get to the real truth. STHS now has a white principal, so they're going after a black SRO. Wait and see.

Great job solicitor.  They both should be ashamed for letting those two go with slaps on the wrist, barely that.  This county has more than its share of child molesters.  Thanks for putting another one on the street!  Those two criminals need more help than time served in prison.   They are mental patients and without the right treatment (more than "family counseling") they will continue to harm innocent children.

Officer Reel has done nothing, but helped students with problems when they come to him.  If the students get a new SRO officer then I don't think many of them will talk to them like they do Reel.  Officer Reel is someone that kids can come to and he will listen and not judge them.  Its not a good thing to have a new principal and a new SRO Officer in the same year.  I mean the students are already adjusting to the new rules and new administration and then on top of that they want to throw in a new SRO officer.  Officer Reel loves his job, and why make him leave Thurmond if he is dedicated to the school and the safety of the students there.  He's been at thurmond for 10 years now, and can really connect with the kids. He hasn't done anything wrong. I think that he should be able to continue his work at Strom Thurmond.

I am appalled and angered by the recent actions of Judge C. J. Nicholson.  Is this man insane or does he just not care about the citizens of Edgefield County?  Is he being paid off or is he just that stupid?

A child killer and a child molester are once again free to molest and kill.  I'll bet that baby killer is already trying to regain custody of her other child.  Neither of these individuals deserves to see the light of day again, much less put their hands on another innocent child.  But I think we would all be better off is that judge were locked up too.  Criminals in Edgefield County have nothing to fear as long as Nicholson is the sitting idiot, I mean Judge.

Given his skewed since of justice, I wonder if the sentence would be so light if the victim were his grandchild, niece or nephew.  I bet the value of those lives is worth far more to him than suspended sentences and time served.  I hope that the devil has a special place in h*ll for him.

How do we as citizens go about making our feelings known that we want this man removed from the bench?

Don't compare a regular deputy to a school resource officer.  SRO's have totally different rules to go by.  An sro has to gain the trust of teens and get info in different manners to keep the school and the students safe.  I hope you trust these "teens" with your reputation by what they tell you at the "very public place" in Johnston.  Ever think that maybe they are mad because the sro found things that got the teens in trouble. Go on Myspace and look at the pictures the teens put of themselves smoking pot and drinking beer and vandalizing signs and gang activity. Seems like a great place to get info to me. maybe you should ask the sro to research your child for you.

What a joke!  I just read the article on judge nicholson setting free the baby killer and child molester. Maybe if the victim were to be a family member of his he would probably no let the accused go free. I guess judges do not care about the victims or the possible future victims, only of their own lives in their safe little bubble of justice.

While supporting many alternative methods and other issues, no one in their right mind could vote for some of those bills that come up for vote.  Part of them (such as the alternative methods, etc.) would be great, however,  some members of congress can't let a good thing go forward.  They attach so many "pork barrel"  provisions to it, that it totally would be stupid to pass them!

Editor's post: There are times I just have to wonder what the heck goes on in the minds of some of our judges. Have a baby, (who knows how it dies with cocaine in its system) burn the body and throw it under the house and walk free. A two time convicted child molester gets to walk after being in jail awaiting trial for "time served". Gee, I wonder what his next crime will be?

Maybe we should hold judges accountable for the crimes the criminals
commit after they set free with a slap on the wrist. Even worse, criminals have plead guilty to drug charges, with the drugs on the judge's desk at trial, and are found not guilty and set free.

Judges are the biggest problem in our Judicial system. Most are appointed so they are safe from being put out of office. Maybe they should be elected. At least that would give them some sort of accountability to the public.

There is a big dead oak tree on Sweetwater Rd that is hanging over the road and about to fall. I drive by it all day long, our kids drive by it on their way to school, my wife drives by it on her way to and from work everyday, and I know busses and a bunch of other people drive by it every day too. Who can I call about this? It is just past the bridge past Miller's Groc on the hill if you are going down Sweetwater Rd. It scares me to death everytime I drive by it and the wind is blowing. How can I find out who owns the land and make them cut this hazzard down?

Editor's note: I do not attend the School Board meetings. In order to do so requires me to work on those nights until 4 or 5 am. Ref: Deputy Reel

I would like to say first that "slander" is against the law. From what I have heard, Officer Reel is going to be replaced with another SRO. Putting in someone who doesn't know the kids or parents during the same year as a new principal is crazy. Officer Reel has the trust of 80% of the kids at STH. Why try to fix something when it isn't broke. And to the person who said he is too "friendly" to the teenage girls....my daughter and all her friends (boys and girls) go to him with any problem and he always tries to help. I trust him with the safety of my child every week day without any concerns. Dr. Crenshaw must be getting pressure from the Motown Fo to replace him because he does his job the way it should be done. Please keep Mr. Reel at STH!

I have worked in a very public place in Johnston, where many teens come after school, while in this spot they have told all the people working (here) how (SRO) Sonny (Reel) has his own Myspace page and acts like a teen on the page to attract girls. Not one child has said this, but on one day there were eight teenagers present that were talking about the things on his site that day and even they were upset.  The problem was they were afraid of what would happen to them if they told another officer, the good ole boy system runs rampant and they know this very well.

Editor's note: It is true SRO Reel has a MySpace page that includes male and female students as "friends". It is a popular web site for teens (even though it can lead to their abduction) and SRO Reel uses it as a way to gain information about things going on at the school. I have witnessed teens revealing things to SRO Reel that they would tell no one else. I am not taking up for SRO Reel, just stating what I know to be true.

Personally I do not think any teenager should be allowed on MySpace. Kids can correspond via email just as easily. Having a MySpace page, in my mind, seems to encourage teens using the web site that I feel is extremely dangerous.

Re: Maybe if you worked for the private sector rather than the government you might have a clue on how things REALLY work in the real world.

I do work in the private sector. If John McCain really supported alternative forms of energy, why did he vote "NO" (last 8 bills) to extending tax breaks for companies trying develop wind and solar power. Why does he think that tax cuts will produce jobs? We have had 8 years of tax cuts and job numbers have declined. Look out for the jobs report today to see an even steeper decline. He says "CHANGE" but nothing he says points to change. Ronald Reagan raised taxes 6 times after he cut them, as did George H. W. Bush as did Bill Clinton and during these times America had the best economic times of prosperity.
You belly ache about gas taxes, but you don't give an alternative to raise funds for infrastructure development. That's what gas taxes are used for to maintain and build bridges, roads, etc. People say that Palin is some kind of miracle worker, but Alaska is the largest welfare state in the nation. Nearly 1/2 of its operating budget comes from the  federal govt. She said "YES" to the Bridge to Nowhere and then changed her mind; but she kept the 200+ million dollars. 30+ states have budget deficits this fiscal year, but not Alaska because of all the federal money, earmarks, etc. Palin was a member at one time of the movement to secede Alaska from the US. However, without welfare from the federal govt, Alaska could not survive. Name one industry in Alaska besides fishing and "Big Oil". The latest word is that Palin's first duty if elected VP is to invade Canada because they have better hockey teams than the US. Do your research before you fill everyone with your radical right, hate-filled rhetoric. The Jobs Report was just released, 85,000 more jobs lost; 650,000 jobs lost since the beginning of the year. Wow those Bush tax cuts are really working.

Editor's note: Put down the drugs, log off your left-wing DailyKos, and back away from the computer. Your lies about Palin are already well documented on the internet so I won't rehash that. Have there been job losses recently? Darn tootin, and can
we blame for that?- the Democrats and President Bush - they raised the unconstitutional minimum wage. I am trying to think who it was that warned doing so would lead to job losses. Oh, I remember, that was me.

The only thing standing in the way of progress and more jobs is government and their taxes.

Any idiot knows that - so where does that leave you? Let small business owners (who create the vast majority of jobs) keep more of their money and they will invest it in their business and create more jobs. Take it away and they will lay people off and that leads to higher unemployment. Your party creates the situation and then wants to blame the free market for its reaction.

It is funny how you don't proclaim the "great things" Obama wants to do, his indisputable communist and Islamic ties, his racist preacher (20 years in the church), and his own books claiming how he hates what makes America great.

OK, I see why you need to chop down the trees of the other side... you can't build your candidate up.

I was not going to vote for McCain, but I will be voting for Gov. Palin. Maybe you are right and McCain will kick-off or have to leave office and a real down to earth, in touch with the people leader might take the White House. Face it, the liberals (and you) are so scared of a strong independent woman with morals and personal convictions.

Really good to see that Fox Creek will be building a new school.  I am sure that the board will do a good job of following all procedures just like they follow their bylaws which state in Article 5 – Officers::
Section 2. Election of Officers. The officers shall be elected annually at the first meeting of the Board after the annual meeting by a majority of the votes cast by the Board and they may succeed themselves.
My calendar says this should have taken place at the June meeting.  They decided to do it in July.  By-laws only count if you follow them.  Of course their practice is to modify by-laws after the fact to cover their butts. Leadership at its' best.  The new board must have been trained by Smurph.

Editor's note: Fox Creek Charter High School is, according to my reading of their Charter, in violation of more articles than they are in compliance. But as long as Scott Chitty sits on the ECBOE, nothing is going to change.  He will vote with Sallie Cooks and crew to assure they overlook the infractions in exchange for his "cooperation". How bad is it when the FCCHS BOE allows a student caught with drugs to be put back in school over the weekend and they seek out students expelled from STH when they agreed (by Charter) not to accept students that were expelled from the Edgefield County School District?

Remember, the people in control of FCCHS are the same ones that pushed zoning to rid Merriwether of "trailers" and by proxy, blacks, from our community.

No wonder it is 99% white. If you ask me, that's the way they want it.

re: "Big oil" gets about .09 a gallon while the US Government gets five times that amount - and did nothing to produce it.

Yeah, like the editor of edgefielddaily knows how much "Big Oil" actually makes per gallon of gasoline. Now I know why your eyes are brown. You really are full of....And you think that "Big Oil" would go to all that trouble for 9 cents a gallon. If the profits are so miniscule, then why does "Big Oil" have no interest in producing more oil. No one is stopping them. They are pumping oil in North Dakota at record levels. They have recently discovered oil in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Wyoming. These states are pumping oil at record levels. Why are the prices dropping? I tell you why, because "Big Oil" controls the refineries and are holding up production so that prices will remain high. Let others who are more qualified to read balance sheets and financial statements do the analysis, instead of your cockamamie rhetoric. You need to stop reading that World.Net rag. It is really affecting your judgement and your ability to do cognitive tasks.

Editor's note: (Taking off the gloves) Cosmetic companies have a higher profit margin than the oil companies, as does many other "big businesses" like cell phone providers, phone and electric companies, and, get this - bottled water. Where is your disdain for "big water" or "big lipstick"?

As it is with all liberals, you also show your ignorance of the free market. If oil prices are up, and producing more oil would mean more profits (even with lower prices due to volume on the market), why wouldn't oil companies want to tap more wells? Furthermore, the Democrats are the ones that have blocked domestic drilling not the oil companies. You speak of refineries. Good call, there are fewer now (because of liberals and Democrats) than there were in the 1970's and, guess who stops new refineries?- that would be your liberal buddies.

Maybe if you worked for the private sector rather than the government you might have a clue on how things REALLY work in the real world. Face reality, it is you and your ilk that work to bring down this country, not build it up.

* I am delighted to hear, if it is true about Officer Reel...he needed to be gone from the high school a long time ago. Office Reel was very "friendly" with teenage girls. He needs to be put on the force and get paid for what the others get paid to do every day, risk their lives.

* Did you every find out if Sonny Reel is or is not the SRO officer at STHS? If it is true this would be one more reason not to send my child to STHS.  Football seems to be the only concern, so much for the safety and welfare of the kids. WE know it is all about money.

Editor's note: I was unable to catch Sheriff Dobey at his office today so I still have not officially been able to confirm anything regarding Deputy Reel. I will say that Deputy Reel put his heart and soul into his job as SRO at STH longer that any of his predecessors. As I understand there is a group of parents circulating a petition to keep him at the school. If that is so, then I guess "unofficially" that would suggest there is merit to the claim. However, I do not want to suggest that the claim is true until it is confirmed.

As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be. —Karen L., Anchorage, AK

Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news. I think she's far too inexperienced to be in this position. I'm all for a woman in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume he'll get our vote by putting 'A Woman' in that position.—Jennifer M., Anchorage, AKSo Governor Palin is a staunch anti-choice religious conservative. She's a global warming denier who shares John McCain's commitment to Big Oil. And she's dramatically inexperienced.
In picking Sarah Palin, John McCain has made the religious right very happy. And he's made a very dangerous decision for our country.

WOW!! Obviously someone has no children or one would know that no matter what values are taught at home, no parent has total control over kids when they are out of sight.  And certainly not one's siblings. (If the accusation of an extramarital affair is true.  That's the first I heard that, however I did hear that the ex brother-in-law was threating to kill several people.)

Now, they have the right to replace him, but don't make up lies and rhetoric to report to Sheriff Dobey. Every reason Mary Rice gave for his removal was untrue and unsubstantiated. When the elections are over and new school board members are elected it will be time to start the process of removing Mary Rice from the throne. I have heard the opinions of many women about the pick for VP Sarah Palin. All of the women agree that they would not have their daughters' picture pasted on every newspaper as the Poster Child of "What can happen when you have Pre-Marital sex?". Would you want your daughter's picture on every news tabloid or every TV magazine show if she were pregnant, unmarried, and a rising senior in high school? It may be "reality" but just 20 years ago the Repubs were criticizing TV for having Murphy Brown as an unwed mother on TV. Dan Quayle said "it sends a bad message to the youth of our country". What has changed? Do Repubs and Chrisitian conservatives now favor unwed children to have babies? I am very confused. Pundits say that this shows that Palin is like one of us. Do you think Bristol wanted all this national exposure? Most young girls her age are worried if their hair is out of place when a camera is flashed; do you think they want everyone to know that they are pregnant and have been running off to join in a sexual rondezvous. Seems to me that Sarah Palin is only thinking of herself and is not thinking of her family's best interests.

Of course, only 11 students took the test at FC while 98 took the test at South Aiken.   A much better judge of accomplishment is the SAT, where FC averaged 1370 for the 2008 results and South Aiken averaged 1526.  (STHS averaged 1481.) In fact, 129 of the 201 schools  in South Carolina reporting results were higher than FCHS.   For those who think this info is just made up to slam Fox Creek, follow the link and see for yourself.  http://www.ed.sc.gov/topics/assessment/scores/sat/2008/index.html

Dear Move On member, yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for 'inexperience,' here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.
Huh?
Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
*   Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
*   She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3
*   Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4
*   She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5
*   She's solidly in line with John McCain's 'Big Oil first' energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
*   How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7

This is information the American people need to see. Please take a moment to forward this email to your friends and family.
We also asked Alaska Move On members what the rest of us should know about their governor. The response was striking. Here's a sample:

She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international experience. I shudder to think that she could be the person taking that 3AM call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today. —Rose M., Fairbanks, AK

Editor's note: So Obama wants to compare himself to the Vice Presidential candidate not the Presidential candidate. OK, I can see that since he has nothing to offer in the #1 spot, so he'll attack the #2 spot, something he should not even be considered for. Humans cause "global warming"? Please, show me where "humans" caused the end of the ice age and we can talk. Just how far do you want to go to prove how ignorant you are? Hey - How about claiming that "Big Oil" is making huge profits while the government gets the largest share of "windfall profits". "Big oil" gets about .09 a gallon while the US Government gets five times that amount - and did nothing to produce it. Why doesn't the "media" report that? Oh, that does not fit the liberal template. I still say that if Hitler had the present American national press behind him then, as today, he would have owned the world. The same push that is being given to Barack Obama.

The express bus is not a new idea. Thirty years ago we all who live in merriweather rode the same buses to the elementary school and then changed to a bus to Strom Thurmond. This should have never been stopped by the school board. The stop over allowed the students to use the bathroom, other wise we were stuck on the bus for over an hour and half or sometimes longer.

Editor's note: My question is why Merriwether School Board member Scott Chitty would oppose the bus. After all, opposing it would benefit Fox Creek, not the residents of Merriwether or the school district. Oh, never mind... asked and answered.

There is a national radio show on a local (Augusta) which is aimed at African Americans.   They had a large Gush over Obama a few months back, and now, today, I heard him criticize Gov. Palin, saying she isn't ready to run the country.  LOL  As a State Governor, she is more ready than a first time senator.  The office alone, gives her  administrative experience.  She has had to run something.  what does a senator run?  a first termer doesn't even chair a committee.Don't make me laugh.  Their dislike of McCain is so visible they can't cloak it with rational criticism, because the facts don't support them.

Before you democrats jump on the judgment wagon, all I need to say is Ted Kennedy. Boy does he have a layer of dirt under his rug! John Kennedy was no saint either. There is a better way to elect the president or any other government official and here are the rules:

Everyone can only spend a certain amount of money. It is given to them from a fund taken from the money the Kennedy's have made off us.over the years. No one is allowed to contribute any money to any candidate. That way they don't owe any favors.
The news media is required to give each candidate the same amount of air time.Free.
If one candidate says anything bad about another candidate then you are thrown out of the race and go directly to jail. do not collect $200
You can only talk about what you will do to fix the problems and you must be specific about how you will go about it. We want a plan in plain simple english so us dumb people won't have to have the media to explain  to us what you really mean when you speak or what your body language says..

I am sure some of you can come up with more ideas. Chime in!!

Mr. Editor,
A young lady I work with has had some hard times. And I ask that you and your readers pray for her. Her 1 year old son, that has been in Charleston since he was born waiting on a new heart, died this past Saturday. She lost her husband a couple months ago. I can’t imagine what this woman is feeling. The MUSC site recently had an article about (her) baby on their web site http://www.musckids.com/news/devices_slow_approval.htm I also ask that everyone that has someone close to them that they’ve taken for granted… please tell them how much you love them. I want to share the advice my mother gave me as a small child-- Never go to bed mad.

Re: While you are busy chanting, you might want to back up and remember that Obama has zero executive experience, absolutely no foreign affairs, or any other credentials for that matter, and you want him in the #1 spot, not the #2.

Reflection: George "Dubya" Bush had lots of executive experience and look at where he led us. Your experience argument just does not float. Now we have the gift that keeps on giving, Sarah Palin. I always have listened to the Repubs and Coservatives talk about personal responsibility and VALUES and now I know what they mean. Repub and Conservative values means having pre-marital sex (whether its heterosexual or homosexual), getting pregnant before marriage, and being the president of the local PTA. If Palin is so conservative, where was her parental guidence for a 17 year old daughter, who was off having pre-marital sex and getting pregnant. Where are the FAMILY VALUES and strict upbringing of children. The Repubs have Larry Craig (soliciting sex in men's bathrooms); Preacher Ted (snorting METH and having sex with boys); and now Sarah "I'm too busty to watch ny 17-year old daughter" Palin who supports ABSTINENCE ONLY school sex-ed classes, except for her own daughter. I get it now, the Conservatives want everybody else to act with VALUES, but they don't feel it's necessary for personal repsonsibility or as one could say "to practice what you preach". Here's the kicker, Palin's daughter is applying for welfare and food stamps, because the father of the baby is unemployed. Add one more degenerate to the welfare rolls. Like I said, "it's the gift that won't stop giving".

Editor's note: Oh please. The Democrats are the party of perverts like Barney Frank, who's gay boyfriend ran a gay prostitution ring from his congressional condo, Ted (drown them in the car) Kennedy, Bill (BJ) Clinton, and a slew of others that are still in office. At least the Republicans run their scum out of office, your party re-elects them as if it is a badge of honor. And why are you bashing Larry Craig for being homosexual if he is. I thought the Democrats were the "tolerant" party. Oops, your hypocritical slip is showing. Or is it just your anti-gay slip?
You seem to be a very bad liberal...

I'm still waiting on you to give me anything, and I do mean anything, that Barack Obama has ever accomplished at an executive level. Anything, I'm not picky. Take your time. By the way, I place more hope in Palin than I do McCain. McCain is a liberal Republican (ie: Democrat). If I vote Republican in Nov. it will be because of her, not him.

Express Bus?

My child attends Strom Thurmond H.S. and I have not heard of an Express Bus.  Please explain to me what exactly this is.

Editor's note: From what I understand there is a bus that leaves from Merriwether Middle School each morning that makes a non-stop trip to STH. It has been kept rather quiet, for some odd reason. I have requested more information and I am told a larger bus is being considered because of the popularity of the idea that School Board Member Scott Chitty (former FCHS school board member) does not like.

It is sad that people and family members take the misfortune of two separate families and turn it into a race issue.
Come on people, this is not about race, it's about misfortune in the cycle of life. We don't know all the facts and may never know them all. Maybe the young man in question was DUI, but what was her toxicity levels? Was she drinking or under the influence of some other unknown drug, other wise why would she be out walking the street at 2:00 am? And it does matter where she was in the street at the time of the accident, because maybe it could have been avoided. It's apparent she was not coming from a place of employment. I'm not condoning his drinking, but maybe he is not the only one at fault for this accident.
Don't be so quick to judge, until you have been in this position. Those without sin should cast the first stone! When I read the comments about race, it's apparent that this accident to those is not about the young man's DUI,or the lost of a love one  but the color of skin of the people involved. You where full of hate long before this accident happen and it is sad that people would use this situation as an outlet to voice their hate for others based on another skin color. God never wanted it to be this way, how disappointed He must be. I pray that God sees both families through these trying times. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves, in good times and bad!

For those upset with the tragic accident of the black lady pedestrian being killed by a white driver, allegedly DUI....be upset over the fact (if proven) that the driver was DUI....not because he was white, to inject race into this is to make an ass of yourself.  For those wanting to bring the race pimps in (Jackson and Sharpton) your efforts would be better spent combating Black on Black Crime.  The following was taken off the Dept of Justice website, linked below....
BLACK ON BLACK CRIME STATISTICS
While African Americans comprise 12% of the U.S. population, 45% of all murder victims in 2002 were African American, 91% of whom were killed by African Americans. Nationally, homicide is the leading cause of death for black men and second leading cause of death for black women ages 15-24.

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/race.htm

You'd be better served looking in the mirror, not at the color of your skin, but the irresponsibility perpetuated within the black culture.

Re: And that is "your guy"?

I can still hear that wonderful chant in my head "Obama, Obama, Obama". It is wonderful. Johnny is 72 years old and has had cancer 4 times and he picks a woman who has no Foreign Policy experience whatsoever. Her trip to speak on Friday in Dayton was only the 4th time she left the state of Alaska. You gotta love it Mr. Editor. Heck, she herself is being investigated for Corruption in her own state. She got mad at her ex-brother-in-law becasue he divorced his wife (Palin's sister) and tried to have him fired from his job. I will tell you this, that GOP really belives in giving criminals a second chance. In a perfect world, she and Karl Rove would get together in an illegal tryst.

Editor's note: While you are busy chanting, you might want to back up and remember that Obama has zero executive experience, absolutely no foreign affairs, or any other credentials for that matter, and you want him in the #1 spot, not the #2.

Worship your idol
, the American people will reject him. It is an exercise in abject stupidity. Even your fellow Democrats are jumping ship. Big money Clinton supporters are now backing McCain.

I'm  not sure if it's a case of dementia or attempting, once again, to rewrite history.  But wasn't it just a mere 6 months ago that Billy Boy "I did not have sex with that woman" and his wonderful "I'm no Tammy Wynette" wife were spouting to all that would listen that Barack Osama wasn't ready to lead this country.  Wasn't experienced enough to run this country?

Now they're standing proud screaming from the rooftops that he is ready?

So what happened in 6 months to change their minds and to ready their messiah?

Re: Also, NC, Florida have DEBIT type cards that are issued for those without bank accounts.

Reflection: First, no one said you were wrong, but what I do is present the facts. You speak of DEBIT card systems like they are so cheap and easy to implement. They are not. You speak with your heart, and that is admirable, but this problem needs more than heartfelt words or a degree in science with Honors. You compare SC with NC and Florida. that's like comparing apples and oranges. SC does might have half the tax base of NC and maybe 1/3 that of Florida.
You say you are just repeating what you were told. Maybe what you were told was incorrect. I myself have spoken with the GuRus that are involved with developing the system. It has not been completed. This system will have to interface with the the SC Dept of Health and Human Services (Medicaid) and the SC Dept of Social Services (Welfare, Food Stamps). Child Support received is considered income that has to be calculated in determining benefits for the above programs. These interfaces are complex  systems that deal with hundreds of variables, needs testing, and income determination tests. Even if you don't receive the benefits referred to above, your name must be run through the system to check if you do or not.
Like I said previously, all of this costs money, money for buying and upgrading computer hardware, peripherals, etc. Computer time costs money also. Every agency gets charged for how much time is used by a particular system to run through a server that performs millions of tasks in a matter of seconds. The point is that you oversimplify a problem that has thousands of people developing it and is far more complex than your pea brain can possibly fathom. Now, take your Science degree with Honors and chew on that for a while.

Please see the attached link for the South Carolina 2008 SAT scores by county and school.  The stats are given only for the number of seniors taking the test
As you can see 65 out of 209 seniors at STHS and 29 out of 47 seniors at FCHS took the test.   STHS scored higher than FCHS; however the average composite SAT scores were down for both schools from 2007. This is nothing to brag about.

The percentages of those taking the test at each school mean nothing in the big picture.  FCHS is a small school where most of the seniors are college bound and therefore will take the SAT or ACT so the percentages will always be higher than those of STHS.
