A note from Dean Campbell, Candidate for Edgefield County Council:

To the poster in Wandering Minds who asked about the word “progressive” in my campaign material and what it meant: First, thank you for reading my campaign information. I appreciate you and anyone else taking time to find out about what I stand for and what I plan to do, if elected.

You can rest assured that my effort to explain my positions in writing has no hidden meaning, no hidden message and no hidden agenda.

Simply put, while people can interpret the word “progressive” exactly as was stated in the posting in Wandering Minds, that definition is not my intent in using that word.

The information I have out there for citizens to read does not say I am a “Progressive.” It says I am spelling out “new changes and progressive changes” I want to bring to the County. Remember, “progressive” also means moving new ideas forward. Isn’t it time we brought new ideas to our County?

Now, if citizens don’t like my ideas (which are also spelled out in the same information), then they will end up labeling them negatively.

I would be pleased to explain all my campaign positions to anyone interested, and I am always listening to understand the issues and how we can fix them. Those who want to discuss any of these topics can call me at 275-3635.

Now let’s focus on the issue at-hand:  Isn’t it time to change the direction of our County?

Dear Sir:
Enjoy (EdgefieldDaily).

I was born, reared and education in Edgefield County some 45 years ago. It was my unfortunate circumstance to be educated in the public school system of Edgefield County.  When I went to University of South  Carolina, I was tested and told that I had an equivalent education to the 10th grade.  With hard work I persevered and graduated from USC. I have followed what has been happening in the county I grew up in and where my relatives live.  It is sad to see the level the school system
has deteriorated to.  It is truly time for a change.  It was refreshing to read the "letter to the editor" from Bridget Clark.  I don't know Ms. Clark, but the refreshing part was to hear an educated person from
Edgefield speak from the heart and who was able to put two sentences together, without grammar and spelling errors.

Don't know the lady, but she sounds like a big improvement over what is in place.

Okey dokey. You supported the new (county ) administrator (Alton Brown) until he turned on you and (County Councilwoman Blackwell, Councilman Ashcraft, and County Council candidate Dean Campbell). You've avoided criticizing him as far as I can tell. What's the real deal?

Editor's note: County Administrator Brown is, in my personal opinion, a sell out. In my opinion he "thinks" he is so much smarter than the dumb country bumpkins in Edgefield County that he can do whatever he wants (remember Wayne Adams?). Personally I think he has already crossed lines any intelligent administrator would known were off limits. In spite of our former Administrator John Pettigrew being, in my opinion, unqualified to hold the position - I'd much rather see him at the helm of the county than this buffoon. At least Mr. Pettigrew had class and knew his legal limitations.

Re:  Special Education:  This doesn’t pass the smell test.

I agree.  It reeks of a way to hide the misappropriation of funds from the special education coordinator; however, I guess she should be relieved since she will not have to sign her name on the dotted line.  It seems to me that the original letter that was the catalyst for all of this discussion was trying to tell both the parents and the new coordinator not to trust the superintendent.  Parents need to monitor closely to be sure that the IEP is appropriate and that the services for their child specified in the IEP are delivered.  Bottom line:  When the position of Director of Exceptional Children was taken away from the department, the power to make decisions was too!

"You crafty devil," said the fairy.

Our schools are in disarray, our county is dysfunctional and we are supposed to believe that those leading us are qualified to do so.
Can anyone explain to me why anyone is surprised that this is such a backwards county with the incompetent people leading us into this mess? It's like the whole world has gone insane!!!!!!!!!! I'd sell out and move but nobody wants to buy my house because of all the (cow manure) imposed on us. Is that the plan? Devalue our property so we can't move out? I can recall when Jim Rex ran for State School Superintendent.  Principals and ECSD District Administrators sent out word to all the teachers via phone and e-mail encouraging them to vote and support Jim Rex's candidacy.  The following outlines what a miserable failure he's been.  The last three paragraphs are particularly insightful on how his administration has contrived to hide the real performance statistics from parents.  I'm amazed at how black students and parents continually take this stuff and continue to support black school officials who are complicit in keeping their fellow citizens down.  A favorite race card played by black officials is the "slavery" card.  Well, history bares out that blacks were sold into slavery by fellow blacks....considering what this article says....looks like history is repeating itself.

What I would like to know is, with the responsibilities for the special education program scattered to so many different people, who is responsible for the money. With a coordinator, there is one person who is held accountable for the Federal Funds tied to this program. I wonder if the reason the last coordinator left, after only 2 years on the job,is the desire by some in authority to redirect the funds for other uses? I also wonder if the coordinator was encouraged to leave so a process could be put in place that would hide how the Federal money is actually being used, but make it hard to hold any one person accountable? This doesn't pass the smell test.

Why is it that Democrat supporters cannot argue issues without name calling ? Tea Baggers? A most disgusting, derogatory, and demeaning term. Tea Party folks, who are mothers, grandmothers, fathers, grandfathers, laborers, sons ,daughters, all races and most religions, have suffered other names from national political "leaders. Names such as astro- turf, domestic terrorists, ect. All to try and discredit the movement. The Tea Party is not a political party, but a movement of ordinary citizens that are alarmed at the direction our country is going. We don`t want to become Greece or France. We don`t want to pass on a debt to our children and grandchildren of $40k plus! It`s time to bring back common sense and fiscal rresponsibility. It is way past time to return to original intent. B. H. Obama is nowhere nearly as smart as any of our founding fathers. And, in my opinion, has not 1 tenth of their honor and integrity.

Mr Campbell states that one of his platforms is "progressive" in nature.  It is not clear to me that is a good thing.  It seems to have both good and bad connotations. A search of American History reveals that this could mean social interference, redistribution to make all "equal".  I wonder if Mr Campbell would clear up exactly what the term "progressive" means to him?

While I do appreciate that Mr Campbell did state his positions and goals,  it concerns me that he is conservative or just using the term Republican.  I will say that at least he has made a statement, unlike his opponent who only got a "tour".

In my opinion Edgefield County Council needs a true conservative to get us out of this "progressive" mess we find ourselves.  We do not need more of the same we have had.  We DO NOT need " Hopey Changey".

The Progressive Movement
Progressivism was also imbued with strong political overtones and rejected the church as the driving force for change. Specific goals included:

The desire to remove corruption and undue influence from government through the taming of bosses and political machines;

the effort to include more people more directly in the political process;

the conviction that government must play a role to solve social problems and establish fairness in economic matters.

The third sentence is what  gives me the most concern.  What say you Mr Campbell?

See http://ed.sc.gov/agency/Standards-and-Learning/Exceptional-Children/old/ec/documents/Coordinator_list_2010.pdf

According to the MacMillan Dictionary Online at http://www.macmillandictionary.com/  , a director is defined as one that supervises, controls, or manages; a coordinator is defined as someone whose job is to organize the various parts of an activity and make sure that all the people involved work well together.   Since special education is a group effort involving parents, general education teachers, special education teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, counselors, behavior therapists, etc., depending on the needs of the student, maybe “coordinator” is a better fit… or maybe the titles are interchangeable.

Let me begin by saying how much my wife and I enjoy reading Edgefield Daily each morning with our morning coffee. (Edgefield Daily) replaced watching (a local broadcast show) mainly for the reason that the news on Edgefield Daily relates to us and the county. The web site is a true community service that you should be commended for providing. (Edgefield Daily) is informative on a broad range of news topics and you fearlessly go where no other media will go to find the story.

For that please allow me to thank you for your hard work and public service. I deem your work a public service due to the fact you do not charge anyone to access the information and you make a vast trove of past articles, information, pictures and recordings equally accessible.

I would like to make a suggestion. I would like to see more recordings and video if that is at all possible. Have you thought about a nightly streaming newscast? I believe that would be very effective as almost all news sites feature video of some sort every day. Even the Augusta Chronicle is placing video with their stories on occasion.

Editor’s note: Thank you for your kind comments. There have been times when video footage has been used and recordings, when warranted, are still produced. We were on track to purchase a professional grade video camera when we were hit with a massive network meltdown taking out our computer systems and forcing their replacement.

Another project under development was to wire the county council chambers with our digital microphones (and possible camera) in order to broadcast the meetings over the internet. That plan has been scrapped at this time due to the unexpected loss. We may reconsider it in the latter part of 2011. Anyone who would like to donate money in an effort to recover the lost funds can find our mailing information here.

Re: Editor's note: Very good, you reached back 4 years to find something. How about more current

Here's something more current, it's seems as though even Tea Baggers have a corrupt side

Friday, Sept 17 The State Newspaper

The discussion of overdue taxes normally is confined to property taxes, because income tax records are private, and the IRS and state Revenue Department give people a lot longer to file and pay their taxes before they take public action to collect. So when Republican Sen. Greg Ryberg announced from the Senate floor in April that 12 House members had failed to file an income tax return at least once in the past decade, there wasn’t much anyone could do except agree that this was awful, because we had no way of knowing who the tax scofflaws were.

The only reason we learned that Rep. Nikki Haley may have been among them was that she voluntarily released copies of her income taxes, after GOP opponent Gresham Barrett and Democratic opponent Vincent Sheheen released theirs. Those copies showed that if Mr. Ryberg’s bill to crack down on tax dodgers had been in effect at the time, Ms. Haley would not have been allowed to run for re-election in 2006 or 2008, because at the time of the elections, she had not yet filed her tax returns for 2005 and 2007, respectively.

But the more recent revelation about the Republican gubernatorial candidate’s tax troubles came to light because the family business whose books she brags of having done since age 13 crossed the line, forcing state tax officials to take public action to collect the overdue taxes. As The Associated Press reported, the state Revenue Department filed tax liens against Ms. Haley’s family business three times since 2003 — twice for failure to pay income taxes and once for failing to turn in the taxes it withheld from employees’ paychecks. In all three cases, the taxes were at least 19 months past due when the state finally stopped negotiating with the company and forced it to pay up.

The Time Has Indeed Come!

Governors of 35 states have already filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them.  It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.

This will take less than thirty seconds to read. If you agree, please pass it on.

An idea whose time has come!

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress.  Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for  sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest was to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform ... in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn't seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law.

I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop.

A Constitutional Convention - this is a good way to do that. It is an idea whose time has come.  And, with the advent of modern communication, the process can be moved along with incredible speed.  There is talk out there that the "government" doesn't care what the people think.  That is irrelevant.  It is incumbent on the population to address elected officials to the wrongs afflicted against the populace...you and me.  Think about this...
The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified!  Why?  Simple!  The people demanded it.  That was in 1971...before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc.
Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.

Editor's note: The 26th is not the only amendment that needs to be recalled.

Editor's note: The county will go into debt on the building. That is a foregone conclusion. It will not do so before the November elections and will be deferred until 2012 or 2013. The bill will have to be paid when the county takes over the remaining 9,000 square feet of the building. That is the elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss.

2006, Dallas Morning News article (from Nexis), Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), the ranking Republican on the House energy committee, had "no qualms about spending next weekend with lobbyists and other high-dollar backers. He's got a special time planned for anyone willing to spend $2,000 for a seven-hour private train ride Friday from Fort Worth to San Antonio." The Texas Observer reported in March 2006 that "[c]hecks from energy companies, including Duke Energy Corp., American Electric Power, and the El Paso Corp., appeared on the campaign finance report within days of the fundraiser -- not surprising since Barton's committee oversees energy policy."

Editor's note: Very good, you reached back 4 years to find something. How about more current information:
- WJLA-TV has fied veteran anchorman Doug McKelway for a verbal confrontation this summer with the station's news director that came after McKelway broadcast a sharply worded live report about congressional Democrats and President Obama. He mentioned that Obama got more lobby money from BP than anyone in history.

- (Wednesday) NBC's Tamron Hall blared, "It's being called 'corruption on steroids'" while George Lewis added, "It's been an angry summer in Bell, California, once people learned that city officials awarded themselves huge six figure salaries at taxpayer's expense." However neither of them mentioned, in two different stories on Wednesday's Today show, that those corrupt officials belonged to the Democratic Party.

RE: Special Education

As of the 2010-2011 school year, there is not an actual Director of Special Services. The person who stepped into the position is called the Coordinator of Special Services and only works part-time. At one time, we had a director and a compliance coordinator. The people in these two positions specifically made sure that the rights of Edgefield County students were being protected. They also made sure the district was not liable in any way for not servicing all special education students appropriately. As far as letting the "stink roll," there is such a stink on this district school board and leadership, I think a skunk came in and sprayed every one of them. Two words that seem to be a foreign language to them are 1) policies and 2) procedures. They smell like stink on poop and really need to clean it up.
Teachers are stressed with over-loaded classrooms, poor support from administration, making things "look good" that are really crap, and a sorry school board interested only in its own gain. People may ask why we put up with these things, well we want to keep a job....those are kind of hard to come by in today's economy.

I would like to know why the county archivist (Trish Glenn) is allowed to take a (Democrat) candidate (Frank Nicolson) for the county council around to county offices while she is supposed to be working to introduce him to county employees!?! Are we paying county employees to campaign for candidates now? How is that legal?

Editor’s note: I have received a number of complaints on this topic. Trish Glenn, the County Archivist, is not allowed to have anything to do with the political process, much less while being paid as a county employee. I do take note that she and County Administrator Alton Brown’s wife are regularly stated (by Glenn) as taking daily walks and she and Bettis Rainsford (her stated “boyfriend” of over 10 years, again said to me) and the Brown’s spend a lot of time together.

County Administrator Brown, as you will recall, made it a point to make his opinions of the upcoming elections known while deriding Republican candidate for County Council Dean Campbell during the July meeting.

Call me crazy (and Brown, Bettis Rainsford, and Glenn certainly do) but when Brown comes out officially against a Republican candidate, Glenn promotes a Democrat candidate, and Bettis Rainsford is shown to contribute to Obama, it makes one wonder.

Glenn should have been fired yesterday for her on the clock political activity if the reports are true and County Administrator Brown should have long been fired, in my opinion, for his insubordination to his bosses (county council members) and his obvious political activity two months ago.

According to information from several sources, Frank Nicholson entered the courthouse seeking directions to Trish Glenn’s Office prior to being escorted by her around the county offices and the town square. Evidently there must have been a pre-arranged meeting to promote his candidacy by Trish Glenn. Maybe not. But is sure does look suspicious.

Then again, it must be nothing, because sleaze does not exist in Edgefield County politics.

Just when liberals thought it was safe to start identifying themselves as such, an acclaimed, veteran psychiatrist is making the case that the ideology motivating them is actually a mental disorder.

"Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded," says Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, "The Liberal
Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness."

"Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave."

While political activists on the other side of the spectrum have made similar observations, Rossiter boasts professional credentials and a life virtually free of activism and links to "the vast right-wing conspiracy."

For more than 35 years he has diagnosed and treated more than 1,500 patients as a board-certified clinical psychiatrist and examined more than 2,700 civil and criminal cases as a board-certified forensic psychiatrist. He received
his medical and psychiatric training at the University of Chicago.

"A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity as liberals do," he says. "A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an
environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation's citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state as liberals do."

Dr. Rossiter says the liberal agenda preys on weakness and feelings of inferiority in the population by:
creating and reinforcing perceptions of victimization; satisfying infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation; augmenting primitive feelings of envy; rejecting the sovereignty of the individual, subordinating him to the will of the government. "The roots of liberalism and its associated madness can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis
of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

A Tragedy

Hussein Obama was visiting a primary school and he  visited one of the classes. They were in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings.

The teacher asked the president  if he would like to lead the discussion on the word for the day; 'tragedy.'

So our  illustrious (alleged) president asked the class for an example of a  'tragedy..'

One little boy stood up and offered: "If my best  friend,  who lives on a farm,  is playing in the field and a tractor runs  over him and kills him,  that would be a tragedy."

"No,"  said Obama,  "that would be an accident."

A little girl raised  her hand:  "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove over a cliff,  killing everyone inside,  that would be a tragedy."

"I'm afraid  not,"  explained Obama. "That's what we would call  great loss."

The room went silent.  No other children  volunteered.. Obama searched the room. "Isn't there someone here who can  give me an example of a tragedy?"

Finally at the back of  the room,  Little Johnny raised his hand.  In a quiet voice he said:  "If  the plane carrying you and Mrs. Obama was struck by a 'friendly fire'  missile and blown to smithereens that would be a  tragedy."

"Fantastic!"  exclaimed Obama.  "That's right.  And can  you tell me why that would be a tragedy?"

"Well,"  says Johnny,  "It has to be a tragedy,  because it sure as (heck) wouldn't be a great loss ......  and you can bet your black (rear end) it's probably not an accident  either."

I too am concerned with what I see and with what I hear about Edgefield County Schools. I am a little confused as to whether there is a person in the position of "Director of Special Services". There is a person that calls herself the "coordinator and/or director of exceptional children". Is she the replacement or does she wear more that one "hat" in the district? I have a lot of respect for the person who wrote the editorial so I would like to think she has based her opinion on facts and if that is the case then there are many questions as to what is really going on in the Dept of Special Services in Edgefield County. At our elementary school, things have changed. It used to be welcoming and friendly. Now, assistant principals don't greet parents in the morning and barely acknowledge students. Two assistant principals now do the job that was once more effectively done by one. Why in the midst of budget cuts and furlough days would there be  two assistant principals? Seems to be  a lot of unanswered questions with our school district!

Although we know your questions will not be answered by this school board, they need to be asked anyway.  Hopefully, the public display of arrogance, lack of openness, and use of the race card when the tough questions are posed will be enough to sway some votes in the upcoming election.

The day the democrats took over was not January 22nd 2009 it was actually January 3rd 2007 the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, the start of the 110th Congress. The Democratic Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.

For those who are listening to the  liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is "Bush's Fault", think about this:
January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress:

At the time:
The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%
The Unemployment rate was 4.6%

George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!

Remember the day...

January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.

The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?
BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!

Thank Congress for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment to this CRISIS by dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fiasco's! (BTW: Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie - starting in 2001, because it was financially risky for the U.S. economy, but no one was listening).

And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA.

And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie??? OBAMA and the Democratic Congress.

So when someone tries to blame Bush...

REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007.... THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!" Bush may have been in the car, but the Democrats were in charge of the gas pedal and steering wheel they were driving. Set the record straight on Bush!

So, as you listen to all the commercials and media from the Democrats who are now distancing themselves from their voting  record and their party, remember how they didn't listen to you when you said you didn't want all the bailouts, you didn't want the health care bill, you didn't want cap and trade, you didn't want them to continue spending money we don't have.

I'm not forgetting their complicity in getting us into this mess, and I'll be marking my vote accordingly!

John's Chicken Farm

John was in the egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets', and ten roosters to fertilize them. He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced.

This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each  bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now,  he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

John's favorite rooster, Obama, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed Obama's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing  pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.

To John's amazement, Obama had thought of a way to do it without work, he had his bell in his beak,  so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.

John was so proud of Obama, he entered him in the Chicago County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.

The result was the judges not only awarded Obama the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded  him the Pullet surprise as well. Clearly Obama was a politician. Who else but a politician could figure out
how to win two of the  most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully next fall, the bells are not always audible.

Karl Rove, former Bush political dirty trickster and now a Fox News contributor, is not impressed with teapartier Christine O'Donnell. Christine O'Donnell, 41, is the GOP tea party senatorial candidate in Delaware, a former anti-masturbation, abstinence, anti-gay and anti-lying advocate, who apparently has not held down a real job in the past five-years. How has she paid her bills? O'Donnell has become a perennial candidate, running for the senate three times in five years. She has been accused of misusing campaign funds to pay her rent and other living expenses, while not paying her campaign staff. O'Donnell, financially backed by the Tea Party Express, ran on the tea party mantra of small government and fiscal responsibility. But her own financial history is anything but. Her home was in foreclosure, the I.R.S. slapped a tax lien on it, and her former college sued her for unpaid school bills. Her "checkered" financial past, as Karl Rove describes it, is just the tip of the iceberg. O'Donnell holds very, very extreme fringe views on sexuality, morality and Christianity. The unmarried O'Donnell has spent her adulthood, preaching chastity and equating masturbation with adultery. She is also a vicious homophobe and not above making false Rovian-like character assassinations. During the primary campaign against establishment candidate Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE), she made up a story about the married Congressman being secretly gay.
But Karl Rove is still not impressed, calling her "nutty" and unelectable. After taking heat for his comments from the right-wing, including Sarah Palin, Rove doubled down on his criticism of O'Donnell, when he said "She does not "evince the characteristics of rectitude and truthfulness and sincerity and character." Yesterday Rove said, the Delaware voters have a lot of "questions" about her shady background, so "we'll see." Yes we will.

Editor's note: I agree the charge, if the person is caught, should be greater than vandalism and should constitute a felony. I have no proof, but something about this whole things smells like a fish market. I would wager that the cost to replace this bridge far exceeds what it should. But why should I complain, it isn't my money? Or is it?

Editor's note: I have sent emails to SCDOT on this matter and have not received an answer. I will make some calls today to see if additional information is available.

RE: "In response to the statement that Dr. Crenshaw's husband is trying to "weasel" his way into the ROTC instructor's position."

A perfect example of the public education system at work.  I read and re-read through the posts and didn't come across the word "weasle" unless of course it was misspelled as "wrangle".  And anyone following the way these unions and the current administration work, you could have bet your farm on the use of the excuse "...just trying to help the kids!"  It appears the terrorists aren't the only ones that use children as human shields.  Every time the NEA needs money or needs to swell the ranks to prop up voting turnout, or a family member needs a job, they use "its for the children" or "just trying to help the kids!" or "child to teacher ratio..." or "we need another program".

When is America really going to wake up?  They have thrown BILLIONS, if not TRILLIONS, of dollars funding program after program after program, and still, according to the stats, the education system is worse now than ever.  And all they do is try to find another program.  Wake up America.  The NEA has been doing nothing but fleecing us and keeping their voting ranks full.  Why do they always need money?  Because, like the Social Security system, it's becoming a very costly, retirement laden system.  And remember how the lotteries were sold to each state?  It was for the children, the education of our children, our schools.  Where's that money?  Ronald Reagan did a lot of great things, but was also stopped from doing a lot more - e.g. getting rid of the Dept. of Education.  He truly was a visionary.

Re: STHS NJROTC instructor

It is my understanding that another qualified candidate was interested in this position permanently; however the information provided to the board members regarding this candidate's intentions was FALSE. Personally I feel that there is a lack of ethics involved in hiring the school superintendent's husband for any position in ECSD. It reeks of nepotism. There is a severe lack of transparency with the superintendent and the majority of the school board members.  They are not interested in improving education for our children, only with lining their pockets.

Edgefield County will continue to decline because the quality of the schools is a major factor in where businesses and families locate.  The voters of Edgefield County have the ability in November to change the face of the school board by voting them out.  I urge you to look at the fiscal records provided on the ECSD website and attend the school board meetings and see for yourself the true agenda of the superintendent and the majority of the school board members.

- I don't want to give my name but why not the Edgefield County Government Complex?

- The Moneypit would be a great name.

- The FUBAR building

-How about renaming it "Monroe's Money Pit"?   Any building project that is being built with little or no specifications for a prospective contractor to bid on is pure folly.  Trust is being placed in the hands of contractors when all they want is to make a dollar and get gone.  I blame this part of this deal on incompetence or laziness on the part of M. Reed, et all.  All we poor taxpayers will see is a hodge podge building with more than one area that does not meet building codes or even common sense.  I can hardly wait for the lawsuits to come from this fiasco.  Taxpayers BRACE yourselves !

While 1 in 7 Americans live in poverty now (a record established since Obama took over running things) she is enjoying lobster everywhere and gluttony of "fine dining" that is going to her already widening hips while she tells you your children (and her's) are fat. Harold L. Groves died at home on Thursday, August 26, 2010, from a stroke aggravated by congestive heart failure. He was born in Kennedy, TX, on May 12, 1933. However, he spent his raucous school days in Vallejo, CA.
Hal joined the Air Force in 1953 earning his wings and officer's commission in 1955. He earned his BS degree in electrical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology and his MBA from Auburn University. He was an F-4 fighter pilot during the Viet Nam War, escorting bombers down the Red River valley to Hanoi, earning him the right to be called an AF River Rat. He was also a member of the Order of Daedalians. He retired from the Air Force in 1981. He then worked for The Boeing Company in Seattle, WA, for 14 years before retiring again in 1995 and relocating to Myrtle Beach, SC. Hal was an avid golfer, though he believed that it was the equipment more than skill that contributed to the success of the game.
Hal is survived by his wife, Ginny Levsen, his best friend, James Dean, his "adopted" daughter, Jian Qin, and many generous and loving friends and family, especially his final caregivers, his niece, Lois Finch, and his sister-in-law, Dorie Geniesse. He is also survived by his loving Newfoundland dogs, Keefer and Bacchus, and two cats, Santa Fe and Rebel.
Visitation will be on Monday, August 30th, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM at the funeral home followed by a funeral service at 6:30 PM. Golf apparel will be more than acceptable at both the visitation and the service. Hal will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at 9:00 AM on December 9, 2010, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, Hal has requested that donations be made to your local animal shelter or to any candidate running against Barack Obama in 2012.

Are the new Black Panthers in town?  Apparently the Merriwether district called a town hall meeting with their member of the school board, but only 16 or so people showed up.  It was later said that word was put out by Gestapo headquarters that teachers or staff were not to attend.  The stimulus money is running low so they are now beginning to wield the layoff hammer again. Teachers, snap to it.  Get in line. Toe the line. Stand up straight.  Sit down. Shut up.

It must be a horrible feeling to live a life in fear.  Can't speak up because you're constantly afraid of loosing your job.  We Americans have sacrificed blood to free millions of others around the world from tyranny, fear, and oppression.  Who is going to save our teachers?

Re: Animal abuse story
- I read this story this morning (Tuesday) and it boiled my blood! Why wasn't this man taken to jail right then and there? HE ADMITTED TO BEATING THE DOG WITH A STICK!! No wonder we have so much crime in EC (Edgefield County), even when the criminal admits to a crime they let him walk.

- I hope they throw the guy that beat his dog under the jail. I hope they take that dog away from him and never allow him to ever own another one!!!!

- HOw can anybody beat a dog with a stick 30 times and not expect to get bitten. Why wasn't he arrested when he admitted it? Something doesn't seem right with the information in the story. Is he somebody special?

- Anybody that would beat a dog like that needs to be taken out and beaten the same way!!!!!!

I am the pastor (removed) who pulled into the empty space in the car line on Friday. I apologize. I was wrong and will never do it again. I will say that on Monday, in the same spot, there was once again a space big enough for 3 or 4 cars to park in but the car behind the space mysteriously would not pull up. Keep in mind this is about 10 minutes before the car line actually starts moving. This time I did not take advantage of it, but I noticed that as a result the car line just got pushed further and further back down Academy Street. This was all I was trying to avoid on Friday, but I guess it didn't look that way. To me "cutting in line" is when the car line is moving and someone coming from the opposite way pulls in where the line turns and people have no choice but to let them in. I would never do that, but I will also never park in an available space again either.

HOW CAN AMERICA BE SO BLIND????????
I guess since they had to swallow their pride and use the Gulfstream there just wasn't enough room for the dog and one other person.

Did you know the Pres. flew BO, the dog, in on a separate smaller jet to Maine for their vacation???? Wonder if that sets well with all the unemployed, hurting, US citizens who can't afford food, but we can pay for this. The above is true.  I Googled "Bo the dog flying to Maine " and got 76,700 references verifying this.  One of them follows:  Michelle Malkin: Just Plane Crazy: Obama's Dog Flies to Vacation on Separate Jet

Doug Powers: The Obama's arrived at their vacation spot in Maine , and the local paper, the Morning Sentinel, described the scene:

The president was the first to walk onto the tarmac, dressed casually in a pale blue Oxford shirt and khakis. A few minutes later, the first lady, dressed in black caprice, a tank-top and sandals, walked onto the runway.  Shortly afterward, Malia and Sasha joined their parents. Baldacci and his
wife, Karen, presented the family with gift bags full of Maine-made goodies, including baskets made by the Passamaquoddy Tribe, popcorn from Little Lad's Bakery in East Corinth, iconic L.L. Bean bags, University of Maine ice hockey hats, and an assortment of other Maine foods and books.

Karen Baldacci said the bags for Malia and Sasha contained one loon toy and one chickadee toy that sound their natural calls. Arriving in a small jet before the Obama's was the first dog, Bo, a Portuguese water dog given as a present by the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass.; and the president's personal aide Reggie Love, who chatted with Baldacci.

The president who said the rest of us are going to have to sacrifice to get out of these hard economic times let his dog fly on his own plane? Not enough room on Air Force One (a Gulfstream on this trip) for a Portuguese water dog and Reggie Love?

My dog saw this story and wants his own jet now, too. Thanks Obama. OH, by the way, Mr. Love, Bo's handler, is paid $102,000.00 a year to take care of him.

What side of the ballot will you mark in November?

Editor's note: The second plane carried several White House staffers, not just the "first dog". Or should I say the family pet. I wouldn't want "first dog" to be confued with the "First Lady". Besides, Obama has said people "talk about me like a dog" so I guess it might confuse readers to place him with the title.

Here we go again.  Merriwether has a schoolboard/district town hall and who shows up-a measly 25 people.  And the ones showing up, whine about the same thing, out of control spending, school board constantly plays the race card to get their agenda through, the Superintendent's husband, an ex-marine trying to wrangle his way into a job-ROTC instructor, yadda, yadda, yadda.  Seems to me their were two guys a while ago willing to stand up, weren't afraid of the race card, and started making in roads at exposing the corruption, only to be vilified by a few elitist PC pacifists that accused them of being too negative.  Maybe so, but how do you unearth corruption and paint it with a positive brush?  Politics is a nasty business, and to fight the corruption you have to get just as nasty-that's war.  Handling those that want to hijack the political landscape and use us, we the people, as their personal piggy bank, with kid gloves is exactly why this country as whole is where we are at today.  We've got people that want to play nicey nicey and reach across the aisle and make friends, and sing Kumbiya, when the enemy within plays for keeps and plays for blood.  Looks like y'all in Merriwether had two guys that were ahead of their time, and could have been the very first Tea Party.  And now that they are gone, who you gonna get to fight your battles? Why don't you get one of those PC police to carry your water? Saturday started the Football season for our younger children.  We were very excited that we would see our six year daughter cheer and watch other children enjoying themselves, etc.  However when we arrived at Bettis Academy we had to pay for parking, it was $1 per event or you could buy a season pass for $5.  So, having a child that will be cheering I bought a $5 pass.

I understand that it takes money to run organizations like this, but after hearing so much about Bettis Academy, I was appalled.  Then there was the canteen that was booming with business. Who is accountable for the canteen?  There was a nice walking track, is the public allowed to use this track or do we have to pay to use the track?

Editor's note: Good luck getting an accounting of where the money goes from the concession stand. We've been asking that question for years and have never gotten a direct answer. The only official accounting given so far was a note on a napkin.

I do not understand why a family member of a player or cheerleader who paid to support the program through registration "fees" (or taxpayers who also pay for the program) would have to pay to attend a function at a public park their tax dollars were taken to support to start with.

Call County Adminstrator Alton Brown at 803-637-2103 for more information (you pay for the phone - use it). He's the man in charge. I have been told that those seeking to use the walking track during the games are told they have to pay to enter the park. Word to the wise, you do not have to pay to use the walking track or the park during game times. It is a "public park". I am sure (wink-nod) that tickets are handed out to those attending the games and those tickets are matched to the funds taken in by... whoever. Just like the monies collected at the concession stand we own but don't run.

Funny thing, we never had these problems when the program was run by the private sector. They were always able to account for everything.

I watched many tribute shows this past weekend about 9-11.  In contrast to our current government Obama and the Democrats, 9 years ago tributes and rememberances were full of prayers, calling out to our God and Jesus.  Our current government has spent the past two years apologizing for our Christian Nation, stating that we are no longer a Christian nation.  Telling us we must extend ourselves yet again in tolerance and understanding.  Our God, our Jesus has been taken out of schools out of places of prominence in our everyday lives.  We are told, especially the past two years, that we must be tolerant of peoples of other religions, those who are non believers and  gays.  We not only must accept their lifestyle we now have that pushed down our throats.  Yes 9-11 changed our lives forever but the Demoncrats have pushed their tolerance and liberalism too far into our Christian valued based way of life.  Think it is ok? just look at our schools, look at the crime in our nation.

We need to put our lives back where they should have been all along.  While it is true not all Muslims should be blamed for the actions of a few, we as Americans have a right to expect those coming into our country to respect our beliefs.  We should at the very least expect our representatives (especially our president) to stand in support of "We the people".  Does anyone remember Sodom and Gomorrah?  That is where we are headed if we do not right the wrongs.  God bless each of us.  God bless our troops who risk their lives not only for us but for those living in fear of terrorists in their own countries.

My insensitive Islamic joke for the day.....

Three men are sittin' on a bench.
One's a Texan wearing a Stetson,
One's a Muslim, wearing a turbin,
And the last is an Indian with an Eagle feather woven in his hair.
The Indian is rather glum and says "Once my people were many, but now we are few."
The Muslim puffs up and says "Once my people were few, but now we are many millions."

The Texan adjusts his hat, finishes rolling a smoke, leans back in his chair and drawls, "That's 'cause we ain't played Cowboys and Muslims yet."

Time to "Cowboy Up"....America...Muslims are playing by a whole different set of rules...As Sean Connery said in the Untouchables..."we've [America] has carried a knife to a gunfight."  America needs to quit apologizing for who we are, we love a good fight.  If they put one of ours in the hospital...we put two of theirs in the morgue (I'm hypothetically speaking to illustrate the point we need to realize this group has no interest in assimilating into our culture).  Read Mark Steyn's book, "America Alone"...it'll open your eyes.

One day a fourth-grade teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living.  All the typical answers came up -- fireman, mechanic, businessman, salesman, doctor, lawyer, and so forth.

However, little Justin was being uncharacteristically quiet, so when the teacher prodded him about his father, he finally replied, 'Okay...my father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men and they put money in his underwear.

Sometimes, if the offer is really good, he will go home with some guy and stay with him all night for money.'

The  teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some exercises and then took little Justin aside to ask him, 'Is that really true about your father?'

'No', the boy said, 'He actually works for the Democratic National Committee and helped get Barack Obama elected President last year, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the class.

People don't go to church anymore because they don't make it a priory to do so. attendance in our Churches have been steadily declining. Crime is everywhere. I read somewhere that about one half of all marriages end in divorce. We have people deciding not to get married until after the baby is born( no shame to let the government-tax payers- pick up the tab) We set and watch tv shows that push sin and violence down our throats until we think it is normal. As a Christian, if I disagree I am Intolerant. The laws that God gave to us have never changed. I have a friend that is gay. I love him as God has told me to but that does not mean that I must accept his way of life. He knows how I feel and that I pray for him. You do not know what I real Christian is. I go to church as a christian because I want to worship my Lord . I go to church because I want to learn more about my Lord. I go to Church becaue I am a sinner and always will be and I need guidence. But if I choose to speak out against sin it not because I am intolerant, it is because I am defending the laws of God. When Jesus comes back I want to be in the group that defended him not the group that enabled wrong because I wanted to be tolerant. Everyone-Go to church on Sunday and take your children. It's a great way to start your week.

Editor's note: The team looked great and manhandled the Bulldogs. I am proud of the way they played and think we have a bright future this year. However, it's been just two games so I'm not ready to buy the hype right now. We've been here before. Lattimore looks great, but you can't run a team on the shoulders of one player.

We have many talented players and weapons on offense and Lattimore will make them easier targets. I can see us remaining in the top 20 and even make a run for the East. But it is early so I am not going to get "cocky" (pun intended) at this time. We'll take each game at a time. The Gamecocks jumped from #24 to #13 in the AP Poll for this week and we will have to deal with #16 Auburn in Auburn on 9/25 and then #1 ranked Alabama at home the next week - 10/9. Having home field advantage will be a plus to take on Bama, but with all the national attention we are getting - a target placed on our backs. I look to see both of these games televised.

To all of the post and the people who responded to my post to stand up and be counted with your vote in the November Elections, THANK YOU!

Edgefield,  take  moment and say a prayer of thanks for the fact that you have more people than you know about who are standing in the face of those wishing to unleash jihad and hell on earth. I think most of the citizens of the county will agree with me when I say that we are a proud bunch of people collectively. We fight, argue, push and shove within our county, but just like family, you wouldn’t want to mess with us as a collective group. Well, that’s how I feel about my brothers and sisters in ARMS, spread out across this war zone, representing Edgefield and the state of South Carolina proudly. You are represented more than you know here in Afghanistan and in Iraq. And I will  continue to post all the way up to November to BEG you to VOTE. PLEASE, if not for you, do it for me. If not for me, then for my children, my brother and sisters in ARMS. If you want us to come home and stop the killing of US military personnel, then cast your vote. We can stand strong, fight swift, hard and deadly and put an end to this war if we have the proper government to back us. Right now we don’t. We are spending more time on the defensive end instead of on the offensive end. You CAN/WILL make a difference with your vote, your educated vote. Take the time to view the issues, the candidates and their plans, then cast your VOTE.

I will go to hell in a hand basket to protect each and every one of you so that you never have to do what we do and all we are asking for right now is your vote. When you lay your head on your pillow tonight, kiss your wife/husband goodnight, tuck your children in bed and tell them happy stories and tell them to sleep tight and that you love them, remember, you can sleep in peace because we will guard the gates and we will defend you America in any clime and place. The cost of this peacefulness – VOTE!

Semper Fi America – and especially to all of my brothers/sisters here with me. I love you all!

Since when are Americans, people who respect and love this country, "radicals, bigots, extremists"? If you listen at any of the main stream media, you would think that the majority of Americans fall into these categories. The Tea Party people are now being monitored for racist actions. People who are opposing the placement of the mosque in NYC are bigots, intolerant etc. We are threatened with more violence if the mosque is not built. Are we going to base our decisions and actions on fears of violence from the Muslim world? Have they not already shown us how much violence they are capable of with no provocation? We don't play up to them or negotiate with terrorists. We need to get to the core of what is going on here. We cannot buy into the thinking that we are wrong to stand up for the core beliefs of this country.  As a Christian, I am told I am intolerant, stupid, radical etc. etc. Sorry, I don't take that on-I know who I am and what I believe and none of that is true. Don't allow this subtle thinking of the world to sway your belief system or your patriotism. We need to stay focused on what we know is right.

District 5- It is all on you!

For the first time in many years, Edgefield County has a true education professional running for our school board in district 5.  I urge the citizens in this district to rise to the challenge of placing our school system on solid ground.  You hold the piece of the puzzle that can help lead our district to the level that all of our citizens can be proud of.  This letter is not to put down those that are serving now or have served in the past, but it is time to place our children’s future in the hands of a true educational professional.  I consider myself a friend of Viola Jackson and am in no way putting her down for her service in the past.  However, having known Carroll Wates for much of my life and having worked under him for a good portion of my life, I feel I am qualified to attest to his ability as a leader in education.  I have known very few people during my career in education that were more respected locally and state wide as is Carroll.  We need someone that understands the needs of our students and educators; someone that sees all students as our prize possessions.   During my more than 20 years of working with Carroll, I never saw him make a single decision without the students’ best interest in mind.   When students made mistakes, he seized the opportunity to help them grow from their mistakes.

Please take this opportunity to put a professional to work for us.  I am tired of being led by citizens that have never been in a classroom; citizens that think they know what we need.  Let me assure you, if you have never taught school, you have no clue as to the true needs of our educators and students.  I can tell all of you that in my 30 plus years of teaching in Edgefield and Aiken counties I earned a good living, but my wealth was in the students that made me a part of their lives.  I loved them all and I believe that they loved me.  Carroll Wates had that same relationship.  His record at the Career Center speaks for itself.  Gold award after gold award and in fact, this past award was on his watch.  This school board election is not about race or special interests.  It is about our children and all of them deserve the opportunity to learn in a quality environment with quality, caring educators.  Carroll Wates will make that happen.

On Saturday, September 11th, 2010, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States . Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this ninth anniversary of one our country's worst tragedies. We do this honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.

I want to lend a voice of support to the post on Sept 9 by the Marine in Afghanistan.

I am a soldier also serving in Afghanistan (Bagram).

Folks if you want to know what America will be like in just a few short years if something big doesn't happen, then come right on over here to Afghanistan.  Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and many others are intent upon bleeding our nation of it's honor, heritage, wealth, and security.  If I and the Marine who wrote the post I am responding to can be aware of what is happening in the US then what is YOUR excuse?

I know just about every Liberal AND Conservative candidate on the November ballot in almost all of the 50 states.  Do YOU?  Do you know what they stand for?  Have you contributed to the campaign of any of the fine Conservatives that Jim DeMint (R - SC) has sponsored and fought to help get elected?  I have!  Will you vote in this November's election.  I am in Afghanistan and I will.

Folks, you have GOT to understand what it at stake.  THIS election is the single most important one in the 234 years of our nation's history.  Don't believe me?  Sit at home on Nov 4th and watch what the next 2-6 years brings you.  I agree with my brother in arms from the Marines.

Don't make his service and mine in vain.

VOTE!  and KNOW who and what you are voting for!

To my brother here in Afghanistan:  Thanks for your sacrifices, and thanks for raising a clarion call to our folks at home in the great state of South Carolina.

First and foremost, THANK YOU for your service to our country. The comments were not to defend muslims or to say we shouldn't defend and fight for this country, it was to comment on how we as church goers somehow always let the wrong ones from our ranks do all our talking, thus making us all look like complete idiots. It's hard to get people and friends in our own community to come to church now. It' not the koran burning or the gay issue alone, it's the christian community as a whole on everyday issues and life that frustrates me as it says one thing and acts differently. It's been going on long before these  two subjects were on the table. One prime example that just makes me so angry are the animals from westboro church that protest at military funerals. What's sad is the fact that these servicemen and women give up their lives and family life to defend their right to do so! These are the kinds of "christians " I was speaking about.

Re: Editor's note: There have been some who left the Sheriff's Office…

This may not be earth shattering news like the Calliham updates but the voting public should know that the recent departure of deputies had more to do with the incompetence of some of the command staff than with pay. Training is nearly non-existent and numerous Monday through Friday employees sit around on the clock with nothing more to do than surf the web or text with friends . Losing five experienced, certified patrol deputies out of the fourteen that are divided among four shifts (roughly 35%) in a three or four month period is substantial. If the voting public knew how inept the upper echelon of the agency is it would be appalled. A closer look at the Sheriff’s expenditures would reveal quite a bit of wasted resources and tax money. How many overtime deputies does it take to work court security (and whatever the number, does that include the 3-5 that hang out in the back all day ?)The court room is already filled with Investigators and red coat bailiffs. By the way, did anyone ever locate the Chevrolet truck the county owns that is assigned to the Sheriff? (Heard it was being used by a non-employee for non-governmental use. Also heard one or more council members may have been aware of this already. Any truth to this?) You probably won’t print this…you know “bite the hand that feeds”.

Editor's note: I gave the reasons why those that left took other jobs and every one was for more pay. One was forced to leave but it was due to problems with his previous employer, not the ECSO. I spoke with each them prior to leaving. The number of deputies that are required for court security are set out by the State Supreme Court. The Sheriff has no choice but to provide the needed deputies even if you may consider it overkill. It only takes a second for a crazed suspect to grab a gun and shoot several people (as has happened in other courtrooms) that you would then complain they did not have enough deputies there to protect the innocent citizens.

RE:  The Edgefield Dixie Youth Baseball has always been unfair.  Check out the teams and see that either the boys that are playing either have a daddy for a coach or their business sponsors a team.  For years it has been very unfair.  But that is just like everything else in Edgefield it is the good ole boys system.  I think their should be rules where these men cannot coach their own child due to being able to treat all players equal.

Of course the coach's child is on his team.  Well how else do you think they will get coaches and sponsors.  Would you or your husband/wife coach a team and your child played on another team?  NO YOU WOULDN'T .  I guess that is why you sit on the sidelines and complain.  A good coach would not show his/her child preferential treatment, my experience is they are actually harder on their own kid (YES I SAID KID).  You obviously did not have one of these for a coach.

If they made a rule that you could not coach your own child there would probably be no league at all because no one would coach.  Coaching these leagues take a lot of personal time and energy, not to mention stress.   They are all also volunteers that have a full time job on top of it.

Calling all Bus Drivers of Edgefield County : Bus  Drivers we need to unite together and let the people know how unfair we are being treated..( First ), we have the lowest paying job in the county, now they are talking about not paying us for the summer months, even tho it is our money. (Second ) We did not get a step -up in our pay this time. Somebody need to tell us where or who is getting all the money ? I know for sure it is not the bus drivers of Edgefield County. (3rd ) Here we go again , about who is accountable for all of this. Once again it is not E.C.Drivers. No communication @ all for the Drivers. We do not get any info, unless it is bad information , like taking our pay away again. At one point they tried to tie 2 jobs to 1, stating that if you quit one job, you will lose the other . WHAT? They make up new laws and rules  that is good for them, and not fair to the Drivers. Here we are driving without any insurance, no kind of any benefits , and they are still talking about cutting pay again. What the,,,,,,,,,,?

Now this is a real good one. If we have an accident , while we wre driving the bus they are telling us that we will have to pay for some part of  the damages. I really thought that  is what the Insurance is for. But I guess, I am wrong again. All of the statements above is true, and we as bus drivers need to do something about this. Enough is enough, and it is not fair to us. We can not sit down on this one yall, we got to take a stand , and do it in the right way. Just as long as their pockets is getting fatter and fatter, our pockets must have a hole in them, because they always take our pay. What the ...............? This info is real and not a lie. Why,,,,,   Because I am a driver in Edgefield County, but if  this kind of nonsense keep going on not 1 but all drivers may need to consider if it is worth the measley pennies ?  Bus Drivers get aboard please, and lets not take anymore of this.

Here are the qualifications for pastor to the question in wandering minds. 1Timothy 3:1-7  This saying is trustworthy: "If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble work."  (2)  An overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, self-controlled, sensible, respectable, hospitable, an able teacher,  (3)  not addicted to wine, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy--  (4)  one who manages his own household competently, having his children under control with all dignity.  (5)  (If anyone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of God's church?)  (6)  He must not be a new convert, or he might become conceited and fall into the condemnation of the Devil.  (7)  Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among outsiders, so that he does not fall into disgrace and the Devil's trap.

Titus 1:5-9  The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders in every town:  (6)  someone who is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of wildness or rebellion.  (7)  For an overseer, as God's manager, must be blameless, not arrogant, not quick tempered, not addicted to wine, not a bully, not greedy for money,  (8)  but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled,  (9)  holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.

Overseer and elder are synonymous with our office of pastor today.

here is a response to the Koran burning talk.
Jesus has commissioned His followers to make disciples of all nations in Matthew 28:19-20  Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20)  teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." We can do this most effectively when we go to and love people who would hate, harm, and even kill us. Romans 5:8 But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us!  This is what Jesus did, giving us His primary example.

The largest religious group in the world that does not know Jesus Christ is the followers of Islam. Right now, there are many wonderful Christian missionaries from all over the world trying to reach Muslims in some very difficult places. Many of these missionaries have sacrificed greatly to be where they are. Many see little fruit because the soil is so hard. In light of all this, the upcoming Koran burning in Florida is only going to make it more difficult to reach Muslims with the gospel. Please let me be clear: this Koran burning is evil and foolish beyond measure. I write this not because I believe the Koran is true (it isn't). I write it because one Koran-burning-party like this can cause all kinds of damage to the Christian witness here in the USA and overseas.

Let's say a Christian missionary has been living a holy life and loving his neighbors in a place like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Indonesia, or Somalia. Maybe he has been able to build friendships, gain trust, and even explain the gospel to some Muslims where he is. When these Muslims watch on September 11th as "Christians" burn Korans, what will they think of their Christian missionary friend? Even if they are interested in Christ, they may be even more fearful than ever to say so.

It is one thing to preach and teach that the Bible is true and the Koran is not. We must speak the truth. However, we must also do so in love. We tell people the Koran is false out of love for them and in the hope that they will come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Burning Korans shows nothing but hatred and pushes Muslims farther away from the truth.

I am greatly saddened by what is going to happen on September 11th.

On September 11th, 2001, many people died on a tragic day. However, in God's sovereignty and providence, this seemed to open doors of conversation and ultimately for the gospel. My fear is that the Koran burning on September 11th, 2010 many close doors for the gospel. If nothing else, Christian missionaries may find their mission fields' soil even harder and their lives in danger come September 12th.

We followers of Jesus must loudly denounce this Koran burning. Let us speak the truth in love, but let us speak loudly so at least some Muslims will know that not all Christians agree with this sort of hateful activity. Their evil actions do not justify our expression of evil towards them

Matthew 5:38-48  "You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. (39)  But I tell you, don't resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. (40)  As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well. (41)  And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two…."You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. (44)  But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (45)  so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. (46)  For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same? (47)  And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing out of the ordinary? Don't even the Gentiles do the same? (48)  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Regarding the Edgefielddaily report of the County Council Meeting of Sept. 7......quote: "Building Director Mike Reed gave an update of the Calliham Building stating most of the metal studs and air conditioning duct work was nearing completion and that there was roughly $137,000 “in the bank”, though some of the completed work would have to be paid from that account. The site work would be getting underway soon and that funding would use C-Funds (money used to pave county roads")......

My question is how can it be legal to use money appropriated expressly for the improvement  of roads to be used for the Calliham building?.....this in our County that has an embarrassingly bad record of paving and maintaining dirt roads.    The current Council enforces stringent policies that prevent worthy roads from being paved, the money in the fund reaches high levels.....but then is spent on inappropriate and probably illegal projects.  I'm certainly out-of-the-loop, and may not understand; however, to me it all stinks of graft and corruption.

To my understanding, C funds are a return of gasoline tax money to each county based on population for the express purpose of improving roads.  That's what it says on the state web site, it seems to fall on deaf ears in Edgefield County.

Editor's note: I suppose it is done in the same way the county road maintenance department is funded completely through a special tax ($20 road maintenance fee) and the workers are used to perform a wide range of services unrelated to the maintenance of roads. We report it, the public ignores it, and the county council allows it.

First, I don't fear the return of Jesus Christ.  My relationship with Him is solid.

Secondly, I don't believe for a moment that Jesus was tolerant of Satan.  No matter how you choose to define His words.

I've never been big on burning books.  In this case, I have no problem with it.  What I don't understand is how it's "ok" for Muslims to burn our Bible. It's "ok" for them to burn our flag.  It's "ok" for them to attack our people while all they are doing is trying to earn an honest living, supporting their families.  I guess the attacks on our country, the attack on the Twin Towers only being one of many attacks, is the fault of that Florida preacher?

They can do all this to our country and that's ok.  But if a preacher in Florida burns their koran/quaran, then the preacher is the one who is at fault for these heathens attacking us?

I, for one, have run out of tolerance.

Editor's note: Councilwoman Blackwell (R- Merriwether) is supported by Councilman Rodney Ashcraft (R-Merriwether/Edgefield) who also makes similar stands against the controlling Democrat majority and both have been attacked by the "Edgefield Political Machine", Norman Dorn (D-Edgefield) as well as the sitting County Admistrator Alton Brown. Iwant to know why (Edgefield Daily) didn't report on the wholesale resignations of deputies from the sheriff's office? I know at least 5 or 6 deputies quit and not a word was said about it. Are you blocking reports for a reason? Wandering Minds want to know!

Editor's note: There have been some who left the Sheriff's Office for other jobs that increased their pay, one who had his certification revoked from his previous employer, and two others (one on family leave and another who left the area and then moved back) who have both returned to service. I do not consider that a "wholesale" desertion of employees.

However with the lack of support from the Democrat majority of the County Council for the Sheriff's Office, I would not blame the entire department for walking out. That is just my personal opinion.

Hope you all enjoy this as much as I did!

A cowboy from Texas attends a social function where Barack Obama is trying to gather support for his Health Plan.  Once he discovers the cowboy is from President Bush's home area, he starts to belittle him by talking in a southern drawl and single syllable words.

As he was doing that, he kept swatting at some flies that were buzzing around his head. The cowboy says, "Y'all havin' some problem with them circle flies?"

Obama stopped talking and said, "Well, yes, if that's what they're called, but I've never heard of circle flies."

"Well, sir," the cowboy replies, "Circle flies hang around ranches. They're called circle flies because they're almost always found circling around the back end of a horse."

"Oh," Obama replies as he goes back to rambling. But, a moment later he stops and bluntly asks, "Are you calling me a horse's (rear end)?"

"No, sir," the cowboy replies, "I have too much respect for the citizens of this country to call their president a horse's (rear end)."

"That's a good thing," Obama responds and begins rambling on once more.

After a long pause, the cowboy, in his best  Texas drawl says, "Hard to fool them flies, though."

The teacher morale is so low in the school where I teach in Edgefield County. I feel like we have an oppositional administration against us along with overcrowded classrooms. The stress level is high, yet it is demanded that we perform at our optimum best. Our principals care mostly about appearances and very little about what is truly going on. Many teachers keep their true opinions to themselves and don't want to be targeted for termination. There is very little care or consideration that is given to what is happening to our students during this political power struggle. I give up; I just do what I have to in order to survive each day.

I think I have figured out why people don't go to church and think religion is a joke. It is the people in the church. There is a so called Christian church in Florida that is hosting a Koran burning, against the advice of the pentagon. Then you have the church goers protesting the gay pride parade here in Augusta. It is very hard to be a Christian and have these kinds of people speaking on our behalf. So much for love thy neighbor and tolerance of others. To all those who will start quoting scripture in response, I can manipulate those words also. I have a feeling if Jesus were to come back tomorrow he'd be very disappointed and ashamed of his people.

Mr. Editor,
Have you ever considered setting up an "EdgefieldDaily.com YouTube Channel"?  You could have your videos (suggestion: excerpts from City and County Council and School Board meetings) as well as videos submitted by readers.  Readers could submit video clips of local interest stories.  Readers who would not write 2 sentences for an article would go to great length to get a video clip included on YouTube - all under the EdgefieldDaily.com banner.

I got the idea from looking at the IRS's YouTube channel at  http://www.youtube.com/irsvideos.   I would imagine that the YouTube channel might attract some advertising if it had sufficient number of hits.

EdgefieldDaily.com already blows away any other local media.  Adding a YouTube channel for Dorn and others would leave them speechless.

Keep up the good work.

Editor's note: It is an interesting thought. We have readers who make videos and send them to the Wandering Minds for others to view from time to time. However, trying to maintain the content posted "under the banner of Edgefield Daily" on YouTube is something that would seem to bring about more challenges than results. We have the ability to feature video and audio on Edgefield Daily where our advertisers already have a presence. Why send readers elsewhere?
web posted September 6, 2010

Yes Edgefield daily does provide arrest details but do you provide pictures of every arrest??  If so can you direct me too that?  In response to the Deputies taking there kids to school they also do their shopping in the cars too.  If you read the sheriff website it states they dont give rides but they Have rider insurance???  That insurance is for inmates and I'm sure if a kid was riding in the car and was hurt im sure the insurance would not cover this because its not duty releated!

Editor's note: No, we do not provide the booking photos of everyone arrested as many are simple misdemeanor charges which are often dismissed or settled prior to a court date. If you want "everyone" charged you would have to include those ticketed by police, which is also a form of "arrest", it is just they are not booked into custody.

Almost all felons are pictured with a report on why they are arrested and often times background reports on their crimes are linked to previous reports, something no other media outlet provides.

The issue on "riders" in patrol vehicles has been addressed and verified as within the policies and insurance coverages. I've read the policies myself. If you have something more to offer I would be more than happy to review the material.

Shame on me. I forgot to pick up my copy of the latest Jail Report on Wednesday. When my daughter called me and said I was quoted in the article regarding Edgefield County Sheriff Dobey's reluctance to release mug shots to The Jail Report, I ran to the nearest Greg's and grabbed a copy to see what was up. Well, I'm shocked to find out that Sheriff Dobey is making it hard for The Jail Report to post mug shots of those that are stupid enough to get themselves busted. Now, since we all know he cannot withhold that information for the simple reason that it is public knowledge and we as the public have a right to know, one has to wonder what Sheriff Dobey's motives are.

Surely he would want the mothers of Edgefield County to know whom they live next to. To have the knowledge of what scary predator may be lurking about ones yard scoping out their children. To have the knowledge of some druggie trying to get their children to try drugs. Now, I know that the local newspapers print the names of people that have been arrested but come on, do we know the names of all our neighbors? Faces are very important as well as names and The Jail Report provides that valuable service. Can I go to the local sex offenders registary and see who's on there? Sure I can but it doesn't provide mug shots of drug dealers. Sheriff Dobey, I am very disappointed in your reluctance. I voted for you because I felt you were a fine officer and that you were doing a great service for our community. Perhaps I and many other mothers of Edgefield County may have to rethink our choice on whom to vote for come next election. You Sir, owe us an explanation.

Editor's note: We have never had problems getting information from the Sheriff's Office or meeting with Sheriff Dobey. I speak with Sheriff Dobey several times each week at his office with no appointment. He has almost always returned requests for a call or comment day or night. If you want information on arrests or sex offenders - Edgefield Daily provides both each week for free. The Jail Report provides great information for those who do not have internet access to read our news each day. Obviously you are not one of them.

I am curious to know if it is legal for county employees to use there work vehicles, ie sheriff cars, to transport their children to various activities and school.  What are the legal ramifications should an accident occur?  Will the tax payers pay the burden of such a tragedy should it happen?  I see a number of sheriff cars transporting family members in county vehicles. This seems to leave a large door open to legal problems should an accident occur.

Editor's note: Deputies are allowed to drop their children off at school on their way to work or pick them up on their way home. They are covered under a rider on the insurance policy covering the vehicles much the same way that those arrested are covered during transport or those given a courtesy transport.

Y'all take your belongs out of your vehicles and it will not give them a reason to keep coming back for more!

Solutions for two problems-

If you don't want to get picked up by the radar that is after "Edgefield residents" on Martintown Rd.,  then slow down and follow the law. Seems like that would be personal responsibility.

If you don't want your vehicle robbed, lock your doors and take your personal items like a wallet inside.
Seems like that would be personal responsibility.

All of this seems like a no brainer to me.  Take care of yourself, follow the law and be wise.

I live in Edgefield County and work in Augusta. As I traveled my normal route of Martintown Road, as soon as I hit the North Augsuta City limits there was a NA police with radar pointing in the direction to "catch" drivers from Edgefield County.  To make things worse, on the way home there was another NA police running radar to "catch" drivers going into Edgefield County.  This is just wrong!  The NA police department is targeting Edgefield County residents.  Fortunately I was doing the speed limit but I'm sure others had been pulled to make their quota to pay for their new police cars.

Maybe I missed something but when it was posted it was Scott Mims who's kids were alone at home when someone tried to break in, wasn't his name allowed because he threw himself in the public realm be running for county council?  Was that not HIS personal business? It didn't have anything to do with this wonderful county council.  Wouldn't MAYOR also be in the public?

I couldn't care less about Mr. Durham, period.  It just seems a little double standard.

Editor's note: Our report on the break-in at the Mim's home never mentioned his name. It was not until the family gave an interview to News 12 that his name was mentioned. Once placed in the public realm by the family it was no longer off limits for comment in the Wandering Minds. That is not a double standard.

I swear I hope nothing major happens to me, my family, or friends in the matter of a wreck or something. Sitting here listening to the radio traffic and the dispatchers that are working, they seem to not know what they are really doing. If you have a wreck with entrapment and possibly unconscious patient, common sense would be to tone the ambulance out first. But these people that they have working in dispatch give it to the deputies first, then wait a minute or so, and then they tone fire dept, and then after another minute or two or three they finally tone out EMS. Now common sense should tell you to get EMS going first since they have the stuff necessary to keep you alive if you are seriously injured. Some people need to go back school and learn how to do their job. If you would just slow down and think a little, and say "if that was me, who would I want to get there first". Its just that simple. Thanks for letting me vent a little.

The motives behind these so far failed attempts to shoot down Nikki Haley's candidacy have been speculated upon since they began just before the June primaries. Money is the most prevalent conjecture and certainly the most easily believable. Vindictiveness also weighs in as does gender discrimination. Politics-as-usual is also a suspect, primarily because when a woman runs for office, a common mode of attack is to question her sexual mores.

To the poster asking about the kids skipping a grade.  Fist off, let me say that I have ZERO personal knowledge about the situation you are asking about but here is something to think about.  Sometimes in these type of situations it is a no win situation for the school.  If an elementary student falls behind 2 years between pre-K and 5th grade that means that by the time they are in Middle school they will be a 16yo 8th grader.  In the 8th grade most students are 13-14.  Parents are complaining because kids are being moved up, and they have right, but the other option is parents will be complaining later because the 16yo 8th grader is trying to "pick up" their 13yo 8th grader in his car.  It's a no win situation but as a parent I would not want my 13yo daughter in the class with a 16yo 8th grader either.  It's a no win situation...face complaints now or later.  One of the many, many tough situations schools have to face and no matter what you are always going to upset someone.

On 29 August, there was a bitter sweet anniversary in New Orleans. For all, Katrina changed their lives forever. For some, it's a sweet celebration of survival and new beginnings. For many others, bitter tears are shed because they are still trying to get back to their beloved city and can't. Keep hope alive as efforts continue to reunite families, friends and businesses to the Big Easy.

On 31 August, the President announced the end of Combat Operations in Iraq.

Operation Iraqi Freedom has ended and Operation New Dawn has begun. As the 50,000 Advisors and 30,000 Plus Up forces in Afghanistan take on some new but familiar challenges, we hope to continue to be just as effective in assisting both the people of Iraq and Afghanistan as they make a new step in taking care of themselves.

On 11 September, we will acknowledge the 9th year of the attack on the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and the passenger takeover of the plane that landed in Pennsylvania ... the 3 events that set America on alert. We'll remember firefighters, policemen, civil servants, civilians and service members who fell in between the spectrum of saving lives and lives lost.

There will be tears shed as voices and visions of the past play over and over in our minds. We will think of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on foreign soil and applaud and pray for those who continue to provide selfless service. We will continue to care for them and their families who understand the meaning of Duty and lived through sacrifice.

As we will never forget, let our efforts be not in vain. As we work hard to move our forces from Iraq to Afghanistan and back home, maybe ... just maybe, we can reach success by September 2011. This would give a new meaning to 911. It would mark the beginning and the end of a period where America was tried, tested and victorious in her pursuit of Freedom.

I've shared a thought or two for the past and upcoming weekends. On Labor Day weekend, take time to watch the sun rise and set; take time to look at the moon and know that someone is on guard during the night; take time to thank friends and family; share a cool drink and something from the grill with your neighbor; find a reason to just enjoy life and the part you play in it. Keep a deployed person and their family in your prayers and lastly, share this message with anyone you think would appreciate it.

Thanks and take care ......

I know on Monday that there was a post inquiring about the 4th and 5th Graders that were promoted to 6th Grade after completing classes this Summer at the alternative school.

I attended the School Board Meeting last week.  The majority of the Board Members were more than happy to talk about this "successful" program and how it had reached 12 children and advanced their education.  Mrs. Viola Jackson stated that all 20 slots available would have been full if the district could have provided transportation for the poor children.

These were kids retained for more than one year beyond their grade level.  The students attended 4 hours of class, 4 days a week for only 4 weeks.  After completion, some of these students advanced not only one but two grade levels.

This is one problem with our School Board.  The majority of members are concerned with the achievement "gap."  They are pulling back on the students that exceed expectations trying to "cheapen" the education they receive.

Please Vote in November.  The Edgefield County School Board needs some MAJOR changes.

There is a lack of honor in all aspects of our lives these days. You see it in families, churches, neighborhoods, cities, counties and the country's leaders. We have a long way to get to a point where honor is restored but we need to look long and hard at our own hearts and start there. We live in such a self centered culture. I am praying I can change that in my own life.

Sarah Palin has done wonders for the Republican Party and conservatives in particular. (Sadly, the two are not necessarily the same.)  She has successfully endorsed "Tea Party" candidates across the country and she has energized a once-moribund part of the American electorate. The Garnet Spy

Was the billion dollar man still out on bail when was arrested this time? Will he have to stay in jail on the drug charges now? What a nutcase, it is almost like he was trying to provoke law enforcement to
help his lawsuit.

Be a modern day Paul Revere.  Only this time, it's the Muslims that are coming.  One is already in the Oval office.

Maybe our leaders of the county should look into the Corporation opening in Greenwood, find out what enticed them there and attempt to duplicate the same process in Edgefield. Believe it or not, companies are looking for a good place to set up shop, but unless we represent ourselves in a better light than we have in the past, you can forget progress. We should strive to be a guiding light for progression instead of a dirty, corrupt, backwards redneck town led by morons that waste tax monies collected and then attempt to find new ways to tax  those who continue to try and keep business open and jobs available. Be a beacon of hope that says “Come to our town and build, buy land here and hire locally”, not come here and let us tax you to death and slander you if you don’t fall in line the Ruler’s of Edgefield.

Insanity – continuing to do the same thing and expecting a different outcome.

Why is the Edgefield County School District web site so poor. I could not find the ECSD office Phone number or a list of staff phones. I tried to find an email address for a staff member but do not have access to the list. You need a user name and password. Is the District adminstration and staff off limits to parents? http://www.edgefield.k12.sc.us/wep/index.html

Editor's note: I know the website is currently being reworked and not all of the new pages have been uploaded. Finding phone numbers is easy by clicking on the Info Now button in the Features area on the left side of all pages.

Does Obama ever sleep in the White House? Does that adjective offend him? He is doing alot to boost the vacationing economy. Signs all over our  Country and World can now display a sign that say "Obama slept here". Who's running this country?  This man has a "vision" and that is to bankrupt America. Bush wasn't the greatest President, however, when he on a vacation, he went to his home to unwind.

Why won't you let comments about Ken Durham (removed) in? (Heck) EVERYBODY knows about it.

Editor's note: As stated before, the situation being talked about is personal business and not anything concerning his job as Mayor of Edgefield. Furthermore, almost everything sent in for posting has been wild rumor. He has stepped down as President of Edgefield Construction and, at this time, that is all the information worthy of being noted.

On August 31, at approximately 5:25 pm, I went to (a gas station) to redeem my Bi-Lo FuelPerks discount of $.75 per gallon. After filling my tank, as I had been told to do by the cashier (who stated that the discount would be applied when I paid, after I filled up) The cashier checked my Bonus card and told me I had no discount available. I had no choice but to pay what was due, and no way to prove I should have a discount. Her advice was to call Bi-Lo.

I checked my Bi-Lo FuelPerks account online when I got home and, sure enough, I should have gotten the $.75 discount – it was available. I called Bi-Lo Customer Service and complained, not about Bi-Lo, but about what looks to me to be a rip-off on the part of the (gas station).

I won’t go to (there) again, but the next time I use the FuelPerks program, I will check on my available discount BEFORE I fill up!

Is this what we can expect after two more years of Obama?  Watch this video.  What has happened to the first amendment in this country?  Is this the beginning of the end of our freedoms.  Careful how you vote in Nov.
