Editor's post: Thankfully Thursday was a slow news day. I had to attend a recertification class at the Merriwether Fire Department in Basic Life Support and afterwards I wondered why more people do not take the opportunity to avail themselves of the wonderful services our local fire departments offer. Contact your local fire department and inquire about CPR and First Responder Courses. Chances are, the life you save will be someone you know. The Merriwether Fire Department may be offering a First Responder Course after the first of the year. Call 279-8001 to inquire about attending. I strongly urge at least one parent (or person) from every family to recieve the training. Just as citizens are the first line of defence in law enforcement, you are the first line of life support in a medical emergency. Get trained and be prepared to respond.

I can't keep my mouth shut anymore ref the Edgefield School District! Dr. Crenshaw, you are ruining the schools and the moral of the staff. Mr. Schilit, wake up and see why you were hired. Maybe you will stop kissing her rear end when you realize it isn't producing roses. Board members, Kenneth Collier will do what's right. Get ready for a change of the guard. Mrs. Cooks, go home and get some fubbin' English lessons. The current situation is in dire straights. It's down right Chitty! The schools will lose a lot of great people at the end of the year, so get ready! Voices will be heard and they will be loud and clear!

Is it legal for norman dorn to bring voters to the (poll)??? If it is, then they should be dropped off the 150’ away from the building, the same distance as political signs. The reason I didn’t capitalize his name, is because I have no respect for this IDIOT.

Editor's note: He can stand at the door to the Voter's Registration Office and observe. If he opens his mouth and tells someone to vote for him or any other candidate, he is breaking the law and would (or should) be asked to leave.

What ever happened to the insurance money from the fire at the Serior Building? I thought there was a deadline to start building and the last thing you had was them (Edgefield County Council) haggling over the Caliham building.

Editor's note: At the last meeting of the county council they voted to extend the "option" to buy the Calliham property. According to sources, no clear title is able to be issued in order to go forward with the sale and it appears doubtful that it will be available anytime soon. You are also correct in that the county is running out of time to begin rebuilding or begin renovations to a building or we will lose over $150,000 in additional insurance payments.

Meanwhile, the property the county already owns sits vacant.

'Twas the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

' On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi'
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
On this one final note-
IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM
GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

It's Wednesay morning and I'm already disturbed by the news, saying how two white-head supremises gang members have been foiled in a plot to murder 88 young black kids in school... and decapitate 14 others as a result to harm Sen.Obama. This is an issue that was discuss on the message board weeks ago and now you see what INFLUENCES I was talking about....

Editor's note: The two were from Tenn. and I doubt they were reading the Wandering Minds. Twisted people are not influenced by message boards, they are already twisted. They come in all ages, sizes, and races.

It was announced today at a realtors meeting in Aiken that Shane Massey was one of three senators that blocked a bill that would have lowered our taxes. The bill passed the House of Representatives but was blocked in the Senate. It involved the "point of sale" assessment that is so totally unfair. No one knows why he helped block this and he has never discussed it at any of his little meetings but somebody not from the district had to point this out to us. I am sure Senator Shame Massey will put his usual spin on this too. Every time he takes a vote he has to explain it. He is representing the Governor and is a puppet for Senator Greg Ryberg trying to further his political career. He is not fighting for the things we need done in Edgefield County. I am tired of hearing that he is a nice kid. This is real world and we need somebody that has lived through all the problems we have had here and has first hand knowledge on how to fix them.

Why are so many of the blotter scared, Obama hasn’t won yet? No one knows how this race will end up but it’s like you all are running scared. You all have already given him the President’s seat so why criticize? I live in a $480,000.00 home (but if I live in an apartment) I’m sure as hell not going to take care of all my lazy family (whether it’s my brother, aunt, father or others) so I don’t blame Obama for not taking care of his lazy dead beat family either. You’re criticizing Obama, what $ house do you stay in and are you taking care all you low class family members? I think not! What about McCain, is he taking care all his family that’s not working, I think not again? Be honest none of us are taking care of family members that’s not working cause the first thing we say is that I can hardly make my own ends meet. Secondly, we say he/she better off his/her lady but and look for a job. Thirdly, we just don’t give a crap. So why should it be any different for Obama or McCain. If either paid all the bills for family members would that matter in the White House, would that matter to you or me, No!

Let’s talk about the real issues and not all this bull crap that doesn’t concern this election. Look at edgefielddaily.com, what’s the main topic of this election: Obama, Obama, Obama? Very little is written about McCain but every other topic is about (the messiah) Obama that’s because the whites of this nation are running scared and searching for all the dirt on this black man. It feels different when the shoe is on the other foot huh. But what are they reporting about McCain, he’s no saint either? Racism has a lot to do with this election. Look back at other elections when it was white against white they pulled the dirt out on both candidates and treated them like dogs but not this time, all the dirt has been about Obama well McCain is no Saint/God either but they’re trying to keep him on a pedestal as a God. Just because he’s a war veteran does mean he’s the best for the job. I mean I have 6 Veteran heroes in my family but neither is qualified to be President of the USA.

Let’s let race out and vote for the man YOU want to vote for and let ME vote for the man I want to vote for and you stop trying to influence me and others to vote for who you want as President. All of this will come to an end 7:05pm -Nov. 4th. The one that receives the most votes will be the President of the USA. Then, let’s see if actions speak louder than words.

RE:  "The only reason you dont vote Obama is becuse you are a racicst. Im sick of you putting him down. Everybody else too. Yall are all racicst. Why cant a black man be great? The white man is what is wrong with the county. (country?)"

The "racist" argument is getting really old, and actually shows how ignorant people follow blindly.

If whites or blacks do not vote for Obama, the whites are considered racists, and the blacks are considered Uncle Toms.  However, if the 95% of blacks voting are voting for Obama because he is black, isn't that being racist? And if they say they are voting for him just because he is a Democrat, isn't that being ignorant?  People using the racist argument show many things - they are ignorant of the issues, too lazy to research it for themselves, and will sell their souls for a measly $500 tax break
or refund check.  And when they lose their job next year because of tax increases on the "job creators", they'll whine again, stick out their hand, and still blame the white man for keeping the down trodden down.

The "racist" argument is feeble because:

A) If Condoleeza Rice (she's black, a female, and is the current Secretary of State for the United States) where to run for President, she would get my vote hands down.  She's intelligent, qualified, experienced-especially in foreign affairs, has the same moral and ethical values I share, and believes in preemptive strikes against our enemies.  Yet the black leadership (Sharpton, Jackson, et al,) allowed
the liberal media to refer to her as George Bush's servant.  And where was the black community outrage at those racists remarks?

B)  How many of you know Alan Keys?  He's black and running for President as an Independent.  If he were of a major party he too would get my vote hands down. Go to his website at http://www.americasrevival.com/.  You'll see he has the same values, experience, qualifications as well.  And yet because he has those values and is successful, the liberal media calls him an Uncle Tom.

C) Michael Steele (another black man) well educated, articulate, was a governor who has executive experience, qualified-but there we go again.  Because he is a conservative, the liberal media label him as an Uncle Tom as well.  I actually can't wait until he runs-he too will get my vote hands down.

(content removed for length)  If you really want to see who is keeping you down, you don't have to look too far.  They have been making you the same promises for some 40-50 years, and where are you at?  Not much further, are you? And by the way-black men can be great and have been.  George Washington Carver, Thurgood Marshall, Clarence Thomas, Frederick Douglas, etc.

Many families with children in private schools are struggling to make tuition payments.
They are considering sending their children to public schools.
But if just 1-in-10 parents pull their kids out of private schools to save their family money it will cost the public schools  in South Carolina $75 million.

Editor's note: Thank you, I think. Do not try to kill the messanger because you do not like the message. All news reports are strickly the who, what, when, where and how. Nothing else. In the Wandering Minds you and others are free to say just about anything you want. I am not sure why someone would want to "hate" me for giving everyone that ability to reach the thousands that read each day and express your point of view. If you think the local papers would give the people the voice I give them each day you are sadly mistaken. You have a right to say whatever you want and even if I disagree I will fight and defend your right to say it, without you having to give your name.

Has anyone else received this month's issue of Men's Health?  Got mine Friday.  Needless to say, I did not waste any time emailing a letter to their editor!  They definitely do not care for my opinion.

The anointed one, i.e. Barack Obama, is on the cover of Men's Health.  Hold on a minute.  Why would you put a cigarette smoker as the HERO of health and fitness on the cover of a magazine that caters
to the health of men?  Why?

Oh, in this case he is given a mulligan time and time again.  He has  tried to quit smoking numerous times.  He admits that he "bums" smokes numerous times on the campaign trail to take care of his
imperfections.  WOW!  Take a negative, and then turn it into a positive.

The fact that he smokes or does not would not sway my vote.  The fact that he is on the cover of Men's Health?  Not fair.  But what has  been this past six months?

Editor's note: Rules do not apply to Democrats, only conservatives. Obama writes in his book "Dreams of my Father" -  "I chose my friends carefully" and among them he specifically lists "Marxists". That's OK. But if McCain had written, at anytime, he chose to be a friend to just one "Radical white" it would be headlines for weeks. But... the media is not biased.

Question?  If Obama ran on the Republican party ticket and bragged about his mother being white, would the people who are voting for him now and on Tuesday, still vote for him?  If the answer is NO,  then you need to rethink your vote for Tuesday.  Are you voting for someone you truly believe in ( a person who has said he wants to change the flag and the national anthem and a person who said he would side with Muslims over Americans in time of trouble) or are you voting for him just because he is black and a Democrat??  Think it over.

The Rebel Regiment would like to thank all the people that came out Saturday, October 25, 2008
to the streets of Johnston to cheer them on as they traveled to Batesburg for the State Band Competition. They would also like to thank the Sheriff's Department and the Johnston Police Department for the police escort from the school and through Johnston. This really meant alot to this great group of students representing our community.  The Band was really pumped up and excited for their competition after seeing all the support shown from the community.  The Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment placed 4th in the State Competition, which is the highest placement the ST band has ever placed in the State Band Competition and that all of you played a part in their highest place finish. We would like to also thank the Trenton Flyers that dropped the "Special Delivery"  messages to band students to wish them good luck. And thank you to Edgefield Daily for all the band coverage and getting the news out about the band . We want everyone to know how much we appreciate your show of support. When will the jobless fight for THEIR place where those are now that shouldn't have the jobs?  To good for that? OK, then you go to another country with your advanced skills because obviously there is no room for you here.  Oh, no skills?  Then stay the hell out of MY pockets.  At least you didn't SELL OUT and study for your education.  Wow, that was impressive to your friends wasn't it?  Where are they NOW?  Probably going to the same church listening to the same crap where you heard that all of your money was stolen from you by the rich.
Some people risk their life in order to get here, then risk deportation at any time and still work tirelessly. Others have leaders who constantly keep their followers in a state of victim hood to keep them in line.  Keep being a victim and you will stay in the same club. I would love for you to SHAKE free from those shackles and escape the new plantation of Jesse Jackson, and company, and join the club of the accomplished.  Then you will see how futile the mindset is of your COMRADS.

Dave, Dave, Dave.  Enough of the sappy, whiny, "feel sorry for me" rhetoric.

First, I present to you the challenge to read Matthew 6:1-4.

Then I strongly suggest that if you are going to run for a public servant position in Merriwether, you rid yourself of the Bishops (that's exactly who it sounds like you are catering to).  One must question your alleged generosity to the schools here, when you work in Augusta. Highly suspicious.  Arguably, if you have been so generous, and are seeking a position here, you obviously want pay back.  Maybe, just maybe, you are astute enough to see that you too can manipulate the Bishops to line your own pockets like the others have.  Rightly so, they're not the brightest bulbs in the bunch.  And quite honestly, I would not hitch my mules to that wagon too soon.  They don't know it-but their days are numbered.  There is change coming to FCHS.

In your dribbling plea there is no mention of issue items, e.g., budget management like Covar and Collier opt for, doing away with Sallie Cooks line your pocket meetings, or even the mention of a pledge like Hoffman to forgo the monthly stipend.

So Dave, stay where you're at-your job may not be paying as much as you want, and you can't line your pockets like you want, but at least it is secure.

Superintendent Travels to event by Airline while Students Ride Bus to same event:

Please refresh my memory:  Isn't Edgefield County School District in a financial crisis along with the rest of the State?  Even if there is travel budgeted into her position, was this the best time to use those funds for this purpose.  Now, I am all for the Superintendent supporting students' activities.  But how  appropriate is this considering the cuts the schools have been required, not requested, to make.
I would venture to say that receipts have also been turned in for meals, hotel, and who knows what else.  I think that when Mr. Collier and Mr. Hoffmann are elected next week, this would be a good starting point of their long tenure on the Board.  I think investigating the actions and inactions and spending of the current Superintendent would be #1 on anyone's to-do-list.  I do not think that she has the best interest of the students and teachers in mind and certainly not my boys when she uses funds for such in a time of financial instability.  Can someone check into this?

I agree with the writer concerning shutting down Fox Creek High School....In these times of economic horror, why must we have two high schools for this area?   The money that is wasted there could be put into one high school.   With everyone making drastic cut backs, both personally and in businesses, it makes no sense to keep putting money into this situation.  At the very least, Fox Creek should get a "pay cut" for their per pupil allotment!   Maybe with the upcoming elections, we will get members on the School Board that will take a serious look and actually do a feasibility study on whether Edgefield County should be involved in supporting this Charter School and whether two schools are needed for this county.   Please vote for Chris Hoffmann and Kenneth Collier....they will be a refreshing addition to the School Board and hopefully, bring back common sense thinking.

First off, I'd like to say Happy Anniversary, I hope you have many many more!!

Secondly, in reference to this comment,
"Dear Mr. Editor,
A lot of people in this area has called Sen. Barack Obama everything they can think of, they
would rather lose their jobs, their houses, their business or go out in the back yard and kill themselves before they give a BLACK MAN a chance to make the world a better place for all mankind. White men has been running the U.S for hundred of years, why is so hard for some folks to except change??? Most of the white folks that I work with say, "we don't know anything about this man/boy", I have worked with these people for twenty five + years, and as long as it's white men running for presidents job that  statement has never been made---WHY???? "

Why would ANYONE, black OR white, think Obama wants to make "the world" a better place to live?  Have you really really looked at his background, the way he votes in the Senate by NOT voting then claiming he voted. As far as people not knowing anything about Obama, what do YOU know about him, besides that he is bi-racial, he hasn't been a Senator long enough to prove himself! If John McCain were black, I'd vote for him, not because he's black, but because of what he stands for and some of his standings that are important to me. Obama wants to give $845 Million dollars to South African countries, why?  I think that that money would be better used here, where it belongs, wouldn't you? I can go on and on about Obama and reasons not to vote for him but, I'd exceed 250 words by far. You spoke of "change", what "change" are you speaking about? It's apparent you're refering to skin color and that's sad. By the way, Obama isn't "black", he's bi-racial. His heritage is mainly Muslim, Caucation and then African. If in doubt, google it.

RE: To the writer that feels Kenneth can do a better job. Remember Kenneth was there once upon a time and did not do what he said he would do. So makes you think he would do a good job now. I have seen Mr. Kenneth in several locations and as never spoke to me and knows me well now to get a vote you want to ask me how I am doing Naaaaaaaaaaa! Does not work that way. You be real all the time and then if you need a little help I can say that person is real not just to get in office and you go back to the same old way as though you never saw.

Please try to read the above paragraph (paragraph hardly describes it)  word for word.  This sounds like something Sallie Cooks would say.  She actually talks like this.  Just a thought.

This is the type and caliber of people that are voting for Sallie Cooks and Barak Obama.

Ken Collier is a good, Christian man.  He was voted out last time because he made decisions with his heart and not his skin.  He had and has the best interests of the students of Edgefield County in mind and heart.  "The Hood" didn't like the fact that a black guy could actually perform like a Christian with ethics, morals, and good judgement all the while looking passed the color of skin.  His blood is as red as the rest of ours.  I wish people would realize that we are all in this life together, red blood all, different skin.  Anyone who has spent any length of time with this man will quickly discern his qualities as a Christian Gentleman.  Maybe he doesn't speak to you as often as you would like because the Bible tells us to separate ourselves from divisive people.

"The Hood" looks down on black guys who aren't wearing droopy drawers, who have a job, who takes good care of their families, who move away from their childhood home and extended family (and I know he hasn't moved that far away, so don't start), who actually make something of themselves because of OPPORTUNITY that they accepted and received.

Get off of your high horse, shake off that chip on your shoulder, dust off your pride and worry about changing yourself for the better.

Two comments listed as one:

- I thought the article you did on your 25th Anniversary was a great tribute to your wife. She is very lucky to have you say how much you still love her and how much she means to you after 25 years.

- What a beautiful tribute to your lovely wife.  Stories like this rarely make the news, but should go to the top of the list.  You, as well deserve some of the credit.  If more couples, young and old alike, had the same commitment, patience and understanding that everything does not just fall into place, what a wonderful world God would see when He looks down upon us.  He would be well pleased.  How sad He must be to see His wonderful creation, the earth and His people in such a mess.  But then again, this is the perfect opportunity to see that He is our Leader and only He can make things right.

Editor's note: Thank you and to all the others who also sent in similar comments. We are together to this day because God allowed it. We have also been blessed with three wonderful children. We hope that they will not stray from the truth He has provided to guide us throughout the years.

The only reason you dont vote Obama is becuse you are a racicst. Im sick of you putting him down. Everybody else too. Yall are all racicst. Why cant a black man be great? The white man is what is wrong with the county. (country?)

Editor's note: The reason I do not support Sen. Obama is the same reason I do not support Hillary Clinton (white), Joe Biden (white, who never got 1% of the Democrat vote for the nomination by Democrat voters and is now the VP pick), Gore, Edwards, Kerry, or any other Democrat in the last 40 years. They all want to make people believe America is great because of our government and not our free people. Sen. Obama has even said our Constitution is "flawed" because it does not allow for the government to take more money from those who work and give it to those who don't.

I vote for the man (or woman) regardless of race or party. I have never voted a party line ticket in my life and do not intend to start now. I oppose candidates on their agenda and theology, not their race. Give it a try and you may sleep better at night.

Advice from the Irish
To all of our brethren in the States...

'We, in Ireland, can't figure out why you people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States. On one side, you had a pants wearing female lawyer, married to another lawyer who can't seem to keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary
against a lawyer, who goes to the wrong church, who is married to yet another lawyer who doesn't even like the country her husband wants to run!

Now... On the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate 'Mc' terminology, married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributor!

What in God's name are ye thinkin' ?

You are correct the State Flag on the courhouse is in good condition. I should have clarified that. The other three are a disgrace!
Congrats to your wife and you for 25 wonderful years together! It seems that happens less and less these days!
Have you ever thought about how stupid it is for people to shout "RACISM," if you say you don't want to vote for "Messiah Obama?" The last time I checked, he comes from white and black blood and is a part of all of us. The reasons I will not vote OBAMA have everything to do with issues and nothing to do with race. If you are a CHRISTIAN how can you vote for a man who supports patial-birth abortions? Have you read how horrible this is for the infant? This infant does have nerves and can feel its body being ripped to pieces! That alone is inhumane and enough reason to vote against Obama. Now let's talk about following a church leader and giving financial support to a man who says God D*** America. Is this not the country he wants to be president of? "Rev. WRONG" wants to shout let's promote the blacks in America, well where does that leave the rest of the population? It seems to me we have many nationalities in America and need to promote all. That's why people all across the world try to become American citizens. We have welcomed many to be educated and have offered opportunities to them for prosperity. We are not a nation of one race but of many! Each citizen is given a great opportunity in this wonderful land. We have freedoms that others only dream of at night. Where is the birth certificate that actually proves OBAMA is a citizen of the US? We have to provide this document for all types of reasons in America such as for education, government assistance, or even jobs? How has Obama not provided this document while he asks to become our President? Is he Kenyan, Israeli, Afghan, or some other nationality that we haven't heard about yet? I would like to know. I am a voter. Is he of the Muslim, the Christian faith, or another faith? I would like to know. He hasn't been truthful on any of these issues yet! You don't listen to a man indoctrinate you for twenty years and all of a sudden claim I don't follow this man. It seems you did for twenty years! Voting is a freedom we should not take lightly, others are dying in the streets for a chance to have this right, and to protect our own right to vote. Don't forget that Obama said in his own book, that if the battle gets tough he will side with the muslims!
I am American and to be my president you must side with America!

I remember when, if you fell upon hard times, you would pull yourself up by the bootstraps and were a better person for it. I remember when freedom was sacred and it was worth dying for. I remember when honor, trust, morality, and integrity were things we looked for in a president. I remember when an unborn child was an unborn child. I remember when government was there to serve the people, not have the people serve it. I remember when God blessed America. I am getting older now and I felt I needed to write these things down so I will be able to recall America when I tell my grandchildren about it.

Dear Mr. Editor,
A lot of people in this area has called Sen.

Editor's note: Why does one's political leaning have to be based on race? Our Sheriff, Adell Dobey, a black man if you must know, has done an outstanding job for the last 8 years. Not because he is black (or white) but because he is a man of principle. Why is it that when people disagree with Obama's Marxist agenda they are called racist? It is not because of his skin color, it is because of his political leanings. Set race asside and focus on issues. Personally I would appose any candidate that espoused the same political agenda regardless of being black, white, green, yellow, purple, or blue. I think a majority of voters, by their comments, agree. Granted, there are some who will vote against Obama because of his race, and 90 + % of blacks will vote for him because of his race. Should the whites then claim blacks voting for Obama because of his race are racist?

Your argument is a two-edged sword.

Sounds like another Willie Campbell, Mayor of Johnston, situation. Does anyone see a pattern here? Editor's note:  I have hundreds of articles that are used for the basis to the editorial. I did not link them all because many readers are on dial-up ISP's and new footage is usless to them.  For those with high speed internet, here is just one of many that exposes Mr. Obama's Marxist claims, including one saying the US Constitution is a "flawed document" and that redistributing the "wealth" (taking from one to give to another that did not earn it) should be a part of our founding documents rather than providing for personal liberty to suceed or fail on your own merits. Another video of Sen. Joe Biden being grilled on Obama's "Marxist" agenda has now been removed from the intrernet. If the school district budget is in such disarray, why does the ECSD Board just not shut down Fox Creek? Edgefield County can ill afford two high schools. Do the blacks on the board like the fact that black students are being short-changed because so much money is going to an all-white high school? I don't get it! Keep the four Elem schools, two middle schools, and one high school strong. There is absolutely no reason that Fox Creek kids can't merge with ST. We would be glad to have them.

I have attended STHS football games since I moved here. I do not do this to get noticed or praised but to only help those student-athlethes that need it. You see Sir, I have a passion for education and seeing to that every child recieves a quality one. I grew up very poor and I was blessed enough to use athletics to recieve an education and it helped me get to where I am today. Just remember Sir, there is no I in team and if I am so honored by the voters of District 4 to get elected I can promise you that no one from ANY school will influence my decisions. 3. If we drilled our own oil, we would not have to worry about these crazies dictating/suppressing our lives.

Nine years folks- never saw him.  He must be one of those "members" who shows up on Christmas and Easter.   I surely hope that since I left he did make the decision to regularly attend EUMC.  But I have a feeling it's another one of his transparent attempts to convince the public he's concerned about the people, when we all know it's about self and stature that he's concerned.

Re: “In reference to the budget issues at the ECSD why did the district give administrative positions to great principals like Murrel and Clark. They had to hire new principals in addition to paying the admin salaries. My first grade child had her class divided four ways and farmed out to the other classes because they could not afford a sub. How many subs or gas for the busses could be spent in lieu of all the money spent at the corner or Hwy. 23 and Par Drive? Why do the teachers and students suffer? This is ridiculous.”

My understanding is that this new grant the district received pays for Mrs. Clark’s salary…which I have heard was a lateral move.  So, moving her to the “corner of Hwy. 23 and Par Drive” actually helped our district.  Both Murrell’s and Clark’s replacements have much less experience – so I am thinking their pay would be much less...thus cutting cost for the ECSD?

I don’t see how splitting up a classroom in lieu of a substitute would hurt your first grader.  At least this way they are getting a certified teacher who, most likely, is already familiar with your child.  This seems better to me than being left doing busy seat work with someone unfamiliar with the routine.  I think splitting up classes when a teacher needed to be out happened before the budget cuts…it’s just smart.

The situation is so bad that Ms. Bishop is recommending Franklin over Covar and from past board meeting at Fox Creek, it would seem apparent to anyone that she can not stand Franklin.  She needs to keep all funding for Fox Creek or the board will be responsible for any debt incurred (insurance will not cover bad decisions).  I say dish Chitty and keep Covar.

Editor's note: I did have a clever campaign slogan... "Don't make a Chitty Choice, Choose Hoffmann". Not that I'm endorsing anyone, I just thought it was funny. Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed -- just imagine the coincidence. When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept.  He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need -- the homeless guy outside.  The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more.  The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved the money more.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.....OR IS IT? IS REDISTRIBUTION OF SOMEONE ELSE'S WEALTH A GREAT IDEA..............or just a fools political game!

I picked up a copy of the (Edgefield) Advertiser this week and couldn't find one real news story there. I bought the Citizen News and almost everything there was from (EdgefieldDaily.com). In reference to the budget issues at the ECSD why did the district give administrative positions to great principals like Murrel and Clark. This is

Are there any tree huggers in Iran or Venezuela or is America the only country dumb enough to listen to these idiots?

On the positive side, the price of oil has fell to apprx $68 today.  But if OPEC (our people extracting currency) actually cuts nearly 10% of the world’s oil production, it may skyrocket.

I read where you said Fox Creek isn't getting cut by the state. Why is that  the fault of the school board and what difference does it make to STH anyway? Just more of your sour grapes.

Editor's note: You have to understand how funding works to understand how Fox Creek is having a huge negative effect on the Edgefield County School District during these rounds of budget cuts. Fox Creek Charter High School is funded through the Edgefield County School District (ECSD). The money paid to Fox Creek is refunded by the state to the District. However, due to a glitch in the Charter School legislation, the budget cuts do not effect Fox Creek. Therefore, even though the ECSD is paying out the money promised to Fox Creek, it is not being fully refunded by the state. That makes the impact on the county schools even greater for having to make up the difference by cutting deeper into the funds for the education of students across the county to benefit one school.

If Fox Creek was actually a part of the school district they would volunteer to shoulder their share of the budget cuts. Don't hold your breath on that to happen. They would just as soon see Strom Thurmond fold than give up a nickel.

web posted October 22, 2008

To the blotter that said Puppet elect Obama: First, let’s get a few things straight. I’m black, not an “idiot”, well educated (how about you)? I have 3 children that are well educated and no other black influenced them. If you’re white and your child/children are trying to act black that’s on you, that’s shows you didn’t do a good job, raising a child/children comes from the home. I’ve always told my 3 to do your best, don’t do as anybody else because you can’t be anybody but yourself and yes others will try to influence you but that doesn’t mean you have to follow – you have your own mind, you control your own actions. If someone jumps off a bridge just because you’re with them doesn’t mean you have to do it; it’s your choice how you live and take life for yourself so the person’s that’s letting anyone influence them whether black, white, (whatever race) is already a weak minded person anyway and parents like you haven’t sit down and talked to them. Get your priorities straight, sweep around your own door before you try to sweep around mine.

Second, about the whites given blacks welfare checks, what about us (blacks) that work, do the government not take taxes from me as well to give to welfare (and the last time I checked not only were blacks getting checks but also whites, Mexicans and other minorities as well) where have you been to not know this? You’re right on one thing you said, “If you want this country to remain free, then get out and vote. Call everyone you know and let’s show them (which include you and me) this small community can make a difference” – Yes please vote so that we can change racist attitudes like this blotter has shown us. Oh! And where is my welfare check, free groceries, free hospitalization and free education- you missed me and my children when you passed all that out (we struggled and paid for ours) so Mr./Ms. Blotter you own us some back pay, groceries, insurance and education monies.

Third, blacks are the worst enemy that fellow blacks have – then why are others so easy to be influenced by blacks. Why does everyone want to act like them? Last time I checked (thanks to edgefielddaily.com) the crime blotter don’t show blacks as being the only ones there, I’ve seen white’s as well being recognized as they kill, rape, sell/make drugs and do anything else to destroy not only the black race both all races (crime destroys all no matter what race, creed, religion, etc.) you’re right again, “WE MUST WAKE UP” to people like you.

Lastly, yes VOTE, VOTE, VOTE for the person you feel will do their best, pray and vote from your heart and you’ll make the right choice. Thank you Mr. Editor for allowing us to respond to any or all blotters, you really give us a freedom of speech. Keep up the great work!

Editor's note: This is the readers section to voice their concerns, opinions, or just let off some steam. Free speech is a Constitutional Right.

Reading the letter to the editor by Sherolyn Bishop supporting Scott Chitty, I found it quite odd, a little moronic, and somewhat illogical in the reason she provided for why we should support Scott Chitty:

"Now is not the time for a change in school board representation for Merriwether. The learning curve is too steep and the upcoming budget years will be tough for the school board. Scott needs your support for re-election to the Edgefield County School Board to continue the support of Merriwether Schools.

Sherolyn Bishop Merriwether, S.C."

Interesting, the rest of the country has continually heard the mantra of change at all levels, and have embraced it.  Yet Ms. Bishop states the opposite.  I wonder why?  Is it because Scott Chitty affords Fox Creek HS a bit of shelter from exterior scrutiny?  Scott may have openly voted for the "Express Bus" but was apparently working behind the scenes to have it canceled.  You see, an open vote approving the "Express Bus" looks good, it makes it look like you are in fact concerned for the students, working for the parents, and have the community's interest at heart.

The "Express Bus" was a great idea resurrected by concerned parents dealing with an economic downturn, a country going through a financial meltdown, and soaring fuel costs.  Parents actually balance budgets, and yet outside of Kovar and Collier, it appears the rest of the existing school board is for me, me, me, I, I, I, spending money like drunken politicians.

Working behind the scenes, Scott, to have the "Express Bus" canceled because one is afraid of siphoning off students from Fox Creek HS, is not only a little underhanded and self-serving, but also a LOUD call for a CHANGE.  Get rid of the self serving and put people in that will better serve the children, the parents, and the community.

Funny, Sherolyn believes the "learning curve is too steep"  suggesting a change would hurt us.  Hmmmmmmm. Guess there wasn't a learning curve for her and Danny to try to run a school.  Appears it is actually a flat line, just like every other business they have run.

We should suggest another "Express Bus".  Only this time fill it with Chitty, Cooks, Franklin, Bibbs, Jackson, and Jackson, and run them on a One-Way ticket out of their positions.  And after that, we need to look really hard at Fox Creek HS and clean that mess up too!

As teachers, we fully understand that our economy is in a mess, and we have been asked to suggest ways to cut our local school budget. We have been told to save energy, which we are doing, cut back on supplies which are minimal at best, and overall do our parts. We don't mind this - we are willing to do whatever - But we do have these questions:
Is the Board going to cut its salary, travel, conference, and expense? (Most district Board members serve because they want to make a difference and do not get paid.) Please give us the salary and amount each Board member has received and spent this year.
Why do we need a Superintendent? Sandra Friar is running the district.
Dr. Roberson came in, tried to teach us to teach children to spell backwards (Ha!) and left the district in a wreck when he quit mid-year. Why then is the district continuing to pay him an exhoribant amount? How much has the Roberson Group been paid since July 1, 2008, when they knew the budget cuts were coming? It doesn't matter what fund this was paid from. We teachers need answers. Dr. Crenshaw is using a man who wasn't successful here in the first place. Go figure!
We have an important Board election coming up. Many of us are already looking at other districts.
web posted October 21, 2008

FYI!  Substitutes can no longer be called for teachers at our schools due to the budget cuts.  The budget for Edgefield School District includes $38,400 for Trustee Salaries.  If that money was put back into the budget for substitute teachers, it would give the district approximately 834 days of subsitute pay.  I wonder if any board member would be willing to give up his or her $500-$525 per month to prevent students from having to be split among other classes or taught by other school employees whose job descriptions do not include teaching.  Who benefits from a child not having a teacher or qualified substitute in the classroom?  Certainly not the child nor the regular classroom teachers. Tax payers need to start asking questions about the monies being spent in our school district. I'm tired of my tax dollars going to the 6 figure salaries being paid to people who should have retired years ago.

Looks like that would be a good place to start cutting.

So DSS gives gas vouchers? Who knew, I guess you have to be in the minority to actually be offered services through them.-don't say contact your state senator, they constantly lie to him too.-as they did his predecessor. If you are an uneducated slob, they help you. if on the other hand you need help because of issues beyond your control, like losing a job because you became very ill requiring numerous hospitalizations, then you are out of luck.  The more your actions contribute to needing help the more they help you, if on the other hand you are someone other than a minority race, forget it, they aren't interested. Believe it? I can prove it from their inactions. You have a right to file discrimination against them-if you can afford to pay for a lawyer. If you can afford a lawyer then you shouldn't need their help. But wait, help is on the way, the messiah nobama is going to fix everything right? Then I won't have to worry about finding a job, or ever paying for gas again, he is going to take from the rich and give to the poor. Wow, and the bureaucrats do such a wonderful job now of running the asylum- I mean system.  DSS is just a prime example of just how the help will be given. What he means is take from the whites and give to the minorities, its reparations with a new name.
Think about it.
Actually, I didn't wait for the state to help, that's what families are for, and they were able to help me through some of the roughest times, however, it would have been nice to be offered the same "benefits" as those  they were offered because they were from a mother of another color.

I thought that this was a very interesting Letter to the Editor.  Too bad, Ms. Bishop didn't choose to mention that she is the President of the FCHS Board.  She couldn't be honest enough to state that she really supports Mr. Chitty's re-election because he represents the interests of FCHS, not the Merriwether area, on the School Board.  What, besides voting for the express bus, has Mr Chitty done for the Merriwether area?  He sold us out for FCHS.  That's why I am voting for Chris Hoffmann.

Please remember on Election Day that Edgefield County needs changes on the School Board, otherwise the quality of education in this county is going to continue to spiral downward!!

Editor's note: You expect anyone on the Fox Creek School Board to be forthcoming about facts? They refuse to provide the Edgefield County School Board with proper enrollment and other requests and were forced to repay almost a million dollars due to over reporting of enrollment last year when caught. Why would you expect them to expose who they are when writing a self serving endorsement?

Editor's note: FCCHS does not pay for the use of the field, the use of the lights, and makes money from the games. STH pays JET for the use of their gym or fields when used. Fox Creek, thanks to Scott Chitty, called the "superintendent Fox Creek", is getting them the freebies. Fox Creek does not contribute one cent towards the Edgefield County School District. But they do allow those arrested for drugs on a Friday to be back in school on Tuesday. There is also a question about football players assaulting others that will be addressed after football season is over some parents say. Every taxpayer in Edgefield County ought to take a look at the school district’s budget (http://www.edgefield.k12.sc.us/schbd/AppBudget0809.pdf).
Many things bother me.

1) Why do taxpayers foot the bill for dues and fees?  Why don’t the top dogs, the board members, the school principals, the school nurses, etc. pay for their own dues and claim them on their taxes?  Do people know the board’s dues and fees alone are over $10,000?  The only people whose dues aren’t paid are the ones on the front lines…the teachers.

2) Why is more money spent on Merriwether Elementary’s custodial staff than the high school and career center combined?  You’d think MES would be cleaner than it is...a lot cleaner!

3) I can’t believe that 1.9 million dollars is transferred right off the top to Fox Creek – yet they don’t have to or are not made to abide by the same policies and procedures that the rest of the county must obey.

These are just a few ways the budget could be reduced.  Then we could leave letting our children sit in sweat boxes as a last resort.

What is it with our Edgefield County elected officials, budget cuts, and lining their own pockets with taxpayers money?  First, Willie Campbell, Johnston Mayor, refuses to give up his part time pay in a real budget crisis ongoing in Johnston.  Then, the School Board members decide to start cutting the budget everywhere except in their pay, travel, and perks!  I guess these elected officials are really not interested in anything but themselves.  Where have all the leaders gone?

I thought democrats were so against negative attacks.  Funny the one that desires to be our Senator must not know that.  My mailbox has been seeing a lot of negative attacks from g. anderson on Shane Massey.  The only one that believes these attacks is g. anderson.

Even funnier is that both candidates were face to face but only in my mailbox.

Massey has a history of helping our district.  What has anderson done?  Use up some paper and ink?  Ok,  he has kept the mailman busy.

I know there is a minimum distance from a polling place for political signs.  Does the law include vehicle mounted signs as well??  Not so much bumper stickers but large signs mounted in van windows and other vehicles.  Just curious.  Should I bring my measuring tape when I go to vote?

Editor's note: Yes, it is illegal for vehicles to have signs posted within the limits. If you see such taking place, you should contact poll workers at once. If they do not make them move, call EdgefieldDaily.com at 803-634-0964 and we will come and photograph the infraction.

So, SC is in a budget crunch. There's a surprise. Tuition was increased at public universities and colleges an average of 8%. Gas prices are excessive, but it seems I remember the legislature voted themselves a pay raise last year, why not give it back? Go back to COMMUNITY schools. For example, there are persons that live 3 miles from a HS in Aiken County that are bussed 10 miles (they are predominately white and bussed to a white school) why? because the realtors wanted it as a "selling point". HOw much gas does that waste? How much does that increase the risk of an accident with those children- they have to leave earlier, on the bus longer, not to mention the additional costs of increased mileage so increased maintenance on the bus. THe school in question is overcrowded yet the one 3 miles away has seen a decrease in enrollment.- SAT scores are equal, its a matter of "I don't want to go to the Valley" versus I live in NA so I'm better than you. I think the state should get out of the school bus industry and contract it out-totally, then they aren't responsible for purchasing buses, the aides can stay in the classroom where needed and the county isn't paying additional salaries, gas, etc. Charleston County went to a private company, and from what I have seen and heard, it is working well. Lets also not forget the 12 million dollar fine that increases each year the state refuses to put child support centralized. Its alot easier for the state to eat the money- REALLY? I'm sure SC college students would love an extra 12 million toward needs based grants so they aren't having to take out 10,000 a year in student loans just to pay for college. How many supervisors does each State agency have? Cars,? I'm sure there is  that can be trimmed. How much does the head of the dept of corrections make? how much do the officers at the Dept of Corrections make?- I'm not sure but I do know that they are the LOWEST paid correctional officers in the NATION. I doubt the head is the lowest paid, and he does very little. The officers have to drive to get gas ( at least a 30 mile round trip) because he want fix a pump so instead they have to leave work, so that leaves them short, drive to a station and pay retail prices. again, a waste of time and money. How long would it take to recoup the fee to fix a pump over paying retail for gas? Its little things like this that add up to wasteful spending. So, Sen. Massey, take a long hard look at what money is spent on, where and what it is not spent on and see where spending a little will save a lot in the long run. After all, common sense in government is not common.

Barack says we need to have a conversation about race in America.Fair enough. But this time, it has to be a two-way conversation. White America needs to be heard from, not just lectured to. This time, the Silent Majority needs to have its convictions, grievances and demands heard. And among them are these:
First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000
black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.
Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.
Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the '60's on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, lega l services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream.
Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks, with affirmative action, contract set -asides and quotas, to advance black applicants over white applicants.
Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.
We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?
Barack talks about new 'ladders of opportunity' for blacks.
Let him go to Altoona and Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were
visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for 'deserving' white kids. Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for African -Americans are seven times those of white America? Is it really white America's fault that illegitimacy in the African-American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 75 percent?
Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community
itself?
As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial
crimes of violence. Is Barack Obama aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?  Is Barack aware that black-on-white rapes are 100 times more common than the reverse, that black-on-white robberies were 139 times as common in the first three years of this decade as the reverse? We have all heard ad nauseam from the Rev. Al about Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape case and Jena. And all turned out to be hoaxes. But about t he epidemic of black assaults on whites that are real, we hear nothing.
Sorry, Barack, some of us have heard it all before, about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars
ago.

Editor's post: Good grief. You'd think that Obama and the media would have dropped this messiah crap by now. But no, now Obama is "going to change the world". Let's see, I guess changing the world isn't much of a challenge after claiming he would lower the ocean levels and refreeze the polar ice caps. This guy thinks he's God and the liberal idiots swoon behind this empty suit. It reminds me of the late 1930's when an unknown extremist took over power in Germany. He too was proclaimed a "uniter" that was going to change the world. He wasn't a uniter, but he did change the world.  If you read the liberal media... there is no need to even hold an election. One liberal editor even called Obama, "my Jesus". And Obama just beams and has never renounced people calling him the messiah or for calling him their "Jesus". Can you name me a single true Christian that would let anyone call them either name? Anyone that does not see that as the biggest reason to vote against Obama does not know Jesus Christ and has never read the Bible.

Some of the riders decided that they would give back a portion of the money or all of the money if they won. Who is to say that the $400.00 would not circulate in our local community? What we call “our” local community spreads approximately a 75 mile or more radius. We cannot ask the participants to give back their winnings; they do that from their heart. In order to participate you do not have to ride the mileage. Riding the mileage gives you a chance at a door prize.  Participants that do not ride the mileage do not get a chance for a door prize or the free meal. The meal costs $6.00 per plate by itself.  By the way, only 2% of local supporters were at the event, all of the other supporters were from outside of Edgefield County.

I have no idea where this information came from , but I tend to belive it is not accurate, unless of course they only offer these services to certain minorities and not all of thier clients. However, I do not believe this information on passing out gas cards to be accurate, because when I had a appointment and could not afford the gas to drive to Aiken, they rescheduled my appointment. The option of them paying for my gas or car repairs was never offered or mentioned by my caseworker.

I direct my comments at you the parents and tax payers. You put up with it. Don't try and pin this on the SC Education Lottery. Has it occurred to you all, that relieing on gambling funds is an unpredictable resource, not to mention inappropriate resource. Where I come from if students want to take an expensive field trip. They earn it. Car washes, Fundraisers, garage sales, baby sitting, and the like. A little labor never hurt anyone.

In a poverty stricken district, are full color year books a necessity? Come on Black and White have been sufficient for years.

Does our school portraits, whom everyone hates, and has redone at Walmart, have to be done by the most expensive company out there. Or are there other alternatives. Our Churches find better rates why can't we?

And now we have no child left behind. So you are telling me, no child misses out on these opportunities, because of their cost? Who picks up their tab if it is not you and I. Oh wait, that would be the parent who can't make their rent check, because they are out of work. Let's see, food or field trip? Tough choice.

And because everyone supplies the same school supplies, that must mean everyone is supplying them right? No, other wise teachers wouldn't be offering extra credit to those who could supply them.

Which student do you suppose needs the extra credit. The one bringing in the supplies to the less fortunate or the less fortuntate individual on the receiving end.

And now let's talk about getting read of teachers. Well, what is the harm in that, if the teacher is going to have their students watch foot ball on TV all day. If they are not there to educate, I say, can them all. If you can salvage a few great, otherwise clean house.

I was once a teacher and consider what I have seen here a disgrace. So, parents off your duff, participate, and be accountable for your student's education.

The budget situation is very serious right now in the ECSD.  After all is said and done, the State Department will have asked that approx. 10-12% of the budget be cut.  I wanted to voice my concerns here, because if placed in the wrong hands, they may be filtered out.

One of the possibilities mentioned is cutting teaching positions.  And it has been said that this will be a last resort.  We've already been asked to conserve energy by ridding our classrooms of refrigerators and microwaves.  And now the AC has been set at a pre-determined degree by the district office, resulting in very stifling classrooms.  Why is it that teachers are the ones to feel the cuts FIRST, when we have district staff members making 6 figure incomes?

Is the school board willing to give up pay that they receive for being a member?  Why exactly are they paid anyway?

Is the district going to evaluate the practicability of certain jobs inside the schools?  These should be considered before a classroom teacher.  And I HOPE the principals will go to bat for these classroom teachers, before the abovementioned positions.

In this gloomy economy, I will no longer take the safety of my job for granted.  And I have no desire to see anyone lose their job.  I just feel that those making these CRITICAL decisions could use better common sense to solve this issue.

Editor's note: The budget cut is exspected to be between $1 and $1.5 million. On a sad note, Fox Creek's money will not be cut along with the other schools because Legislators forgot to include them. So STH will lose about $350,000 each month to Fox Creek.

Oil prices have fell below $70 a barrel and the cost per gallon at the loading facilities is approx $1.68 per gallon.  Let’s do some math:

1.68 per gallon @ loading rack
 + 34 cent fed tax
 + 17 cent state tax
+ 2.5 cent delivery fee (this is on the high side)
+  10 cent per gallon profit/mark up (this is med/high side)
= $2.32

So why is the price at the pump still $2.79???? u do the math.

On a happier note….notice how quick OPEC is to push up a meeting to cut production and raise prices.  They say the ideal price (in their minds) is btw $70-$90 per barrel….Where the heck were they, when the price hit $140??????

This piece was written by Cuban refuge Manuel Alvarez, Jr. who escaped from communist Cuba on June 30, 1968.
Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day. On July 4 I celebrate America's. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.
On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba and a few months later I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.
I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.
When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor, and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said 'Praise the Lord.' And when the young leader said, 'I will be for change and I'll bring you change,' everyone yelled, 'Viva Fidel!'
But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent, the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.
Luckily, we would never fall--in America- -for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change?  How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?
Would we?

We are seeing the mushrooms of political campaign signs sprouting along the roadside.  We need politicians and county leaders to address the water problems on the west side of the county.  You know the part of the county on your left hand side when you are looking toward the north.  There are real people over here….not just a bunch of peach trees.  Get real people!  Get to work!

Its a shame when you have to take glory in another teams struggles , but when you have no tradition of winning I guess its to new to know how to act.

Dear Edgefield Daily Editor,

Parents are worried that public schools won't have the money needed to make it through the year.
Lawmakers are responding with proposals to improve how the money, averaging $11,480 per child, is allocated. But administrators are pushing back, protecting their expensive fiefdoms:

Editor's post: I wish I could enforce the notice by Aiken Electric Cooperative that said power bills would increase 15% this year. I would gladly pay them a 25% increase in our bill from last year for power this year. Somehow the 15% increase has equated to a 100% increase. Stranger still is that the reason for the increase in cost was due to rising oil and fuel costs. Correct me if I am wrong, but fuel costs are below that of a year ago. Why is our bill still rising even as we use less?

We just paid a ton of money to redo the (Edgefield) town square and i rode by today on my way home and the whole thing was plowed up again. I guess the mayor's bro-in-law needed more money so they dug it up again.

Editor's note: The grass was not plowed up, a layer of fertilized soil (as I was told) was spread over the area and it will soon be seeded with Rye grass as is done every winter. I do not know if the additional work is beyond the original contract or not.

In my opinions I agree or disagree with issues before them and the actions they take, it is your decision to do what you will with that information. With elections approaching I would appreciate someone looking into the parking or more specifically, lack thereof, at the American Legion hut in Edgefield. Without fail each election the front row parking  is full and the majority of parking in the entire lot is taken up by the poll workers personal vehicles.  Each time I have to park next door at the boy scout building. Why can't the poll workers park next door and leave the parking lot for the voters. I know that it has to be the poll workers cars because when I have gone in to vote during primaries the lot would be full and I would be the only one voting at the time. Since this is a presidential election, I expect alot more traffic and parking problems, this one seems like an easy fix. Parking is limited on a good day, but why let the staff contribute to an already to small a lot.

I have always considered myself an independent and always voted for the person not the party.  When I first heard Obama speak, I thought his ideas sounded good. Continuing to listen and thinking about what he was saying, I thought if he is elected we should all be scared.  He wants to bring our troops home, now, yet again letting the world, who support us and want a better life for themselves and their children down giving our enemies an opportunity to fill our void with dangerous intentions.  He would take the efforts of many of us, both black and white, who have worked for better education, small businesses and watching our personal income and spending, away from us.  He wants to redistribute our efforts of hard work and income to the "less fortunate" through programs of welfair and disincentives to those who have been more than willing to sit back, take from others and not been a part of the upward process.  These disincentives do not raise people out of poverty, it keeps them discouraged and under the "protection" of the government thereby controlling them.  There are people of all races who have said, by my own efforts will I raise myself and my children up to stop this vicious cycle.  What separates us is not race nor poverty nor wealth it is our own abilities and willingness to make this a great nation where we can reach the American dream.

Unlike Michelle Obama, for once in my life, I am truly fearful of what the future holds.  While McCain is not Mr. Personality, I will vote for him because I think he represents my values and will put his country and its people first, not for self gain but for his love of this country.   We are in a mess and only God can bring us out of the pit.  I am praying harder than ever for this country.  I hope everyone else is also.

Please make a note of this.  Put it in your archives somewhere.  Remember this Prediction.  Mr. Editor, faithful readers of Edgefield Daily, wait and see if I am correct.

Here goes:
This is a prediction of the events immediately following the 2008 Presidential Elections:
Obama/Biden wins!   Democrats and blacks will riot and cause ridiculous amounts of damage costing taxpayers millions.

McCain/Palin wins!  Democrats and blacks will riot and cause ridiculous amounts of damage costing taxpayers BILLIONS.

Mark my prediction.  We have three weeks to the day to get the plywood out, get the fire hoses out, load our pistols, shotguns, rifles to ward off looters from our businesses and homes and to put up with the liberal television media who will certainly cover the chaos caused by the Democrats and their constituents regardless who wins.  You won't see Republicans out there rioting if Obama does pull one out of his you-know-what.  (removed)

This is to all people who support Obama:

1.  Don't you wonder where his REAL birth certificate is?  It is obvious to everyone that he hasn't provided one.  Wouldn't you like a President to be a legal citizen? - I am baffled why he can still run for President of the United States when he hasn't provided a legal certificate.

2.  Do you really want to support someone who is "approved" by terrorist groups?  Are you all really that naive?  You want America to be free of what we went through with 9/11... yet you endorse someone who is supported by those same people.

3.  Am I the only one who has noticed he isn't at all patriotic for the country he wishes to serve?  He never participates in the Pledge of Allegiance.  I, for one, would like a President to support the Pledge of Allegiance.  We should keep it in the schools and we should still say "under God".  He will rid us of the whole thing if he becomes President.

4.  Last, but not least, did anyone else get creeped out by the chant that a school had those boys say?  Wow. Someone actually supports this man?
So, I ask Mr. Editor, are you ready to move to Canada?

Do they yell at their child? if so, then they should fear  losing their child because they hurt poor little johnnys feelings. I always told the teachers I would support them anyway possible, the classroom was thier domain and I expected my children to abide by the rules at school just like I expected them to abide by my rules at home. If they failed to so so then they had to face the consequences.Thats whats wrong with education today its not money, its parents that use school as daycare,or get upset because someone may have yelled at thier child. there is no discipline in the classroom because the parents have whined so much its been removed for fear of legal action.Next time little johnny comes home with a writeup maybe you should stand behind the teacher. It is possible your child may be guilty because I am sure hes not perfect at home. You know kids might actually learn a few things if she isnt having to deal with your child.

Re:No other dept. has given clvfd  any vehicle , they all had to be purchased..

I guess the person that wrote back about the clvfd vehicle didn’t think too much before hitting the send button?

“Once a unit is too old... “is the first clue maybe this thing is junk?

“i.e more to repair than is worth they are rotated to fire service for first responder truck, service trucks, etc.” hello? They decided to get rid of it because it’s not worth putting any more money into it?

“To me this is a VERY WORTHWHILE use of county resources.....as you probably know. After the fire department takes possession of the unit it is there responsibility and expense to refurbish it and equip it for there particular needs.  Most of the labor and materials are donated.” Let me guess, the Chief only charged for materials, right?

Where is the harm??  County taxes paid for the unit, and county residents benefit from it.....from start to finish.  To me that is stretching a dollar pretty darn far. Money they surely do not have.” You’re putting money into a vehicle that was run into the ground two or three times over. It has been repaired time and time again. The best place for it is the scrap yard.

Listen, I’m no rocket scientist but I believe I figured this one out by myself. You don’t have a clue. I also pray that you have no way of putting your hands on, okaying or signing any checks or monies down at CLVFD.

I don’t approve of a lot of the things thought by Islam, but I cannot judge their religion.

But someone with common sense would think that if his dad practiced Islam, and his mom was a Christian, then growing up he would research and look into both religions. Much like a person would if one member of the family was Jewish, and the other was Catholic.

BUT AGAIN…he isn’t Muslim! So the point is moot. And if you are going to use the sound bite that he says ‘…my Muslim faith,’ (which he later corrects himself) then I can go on a tangent and say that McCain is delusional because he thinks he’s running for President of Hanoi, because he had a slip of the tongue and says http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mBi7d6e5KI…my fellow prisoners’ at a rally.

Anyone can take sound bites and spin them in many ways to benefit their opinion. The GOP scare tactics aren’t working…what other cards can they play now?

McCain is out of touch with today’s society, and he is a warmonger. Palin is an unintelligent, vindictive, power hungry woman that loves to impose her authority.

Mavericks…no!
Just mirror images of the ones we have in office now.

Editor's note:
"I cannot judge their religion"? Really? Seriously? You know, you can be so "open minded" that your brain falls out. McCain was a prisoner "of war" so his "misstatement" is based in reality. What about Obama's "It is true that John McCain has not been talking about my Muslim faith". Replace his "Mulsim faith" with Christian faith and see if the sentence makes any sense.

Rather telling also, you refuse to "judge" Muslims or Obama, but you are fine with judging McCain and Palin.

the county line blogger slamming the clvfd is wrong.  There have been several used ambulances that have been put in service at fire departments in the county.  Once a unit is too old... i.e more to repair than is worth they are rotated to fire service for first responder truck, service trucks, etc.  They are not DHEC approved ambulances and carry no patients but they do carry life saving equipment of both EMS and fire variety.  To me this is a VERY WORTHWHILE use of county resources.....as you probably know.  If I am not mistaken, these units are first advertised for sale state/nation wide and if, after a predetermined length of time there is no purchaser or the offer is ridicuously low the unit is "sold" to one of our local fire departments if they want it.  After the fire department takes possession of the unit it is there responsibility and expense to refurbish it and equip it for there particular needs.  Most of the labor and materials are donated.  Where is the harm??  County taxes paid for the unit, and county residents benefit from it.....from start to finish.  To me that is stretching a dollar pretty darn far.  I know there is some real bitterness down at clvfd and I am not taking sides but the facts need to be set straight.  This kind of erroneous information sends a bad message to the public.

As for the brush truck......this too is surplus from S.C. State Forrestry.  They re-assign it to a fire department for a brush truck.  It can only be assigned to another fire department with approval from forrestry.  Thus, the truck has changed hands three times.....forrestry, Merriwether, clvfd.   Each department must fix/ maintain it and the quid pro quo is they must assist forrestry if needed on brush/woods fires.  Pretty good deal when you can get a brush truck for only the cost of a few pieces and parts rather than spending $75,000 to $125,00 for a new one.  Money they surely do not have. This recycling is quite common.

Shouldn't one have to pass a urine (drug) test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. It is the Democrats who:
  • Are stealing or destroying Chris Hoffmann and Ken Collier's campaign signs...
  • Rioting at the Republican National Convention and causing millions of dollars in damage...
  • Have refused to vote on or help correct the financial crisis so it looks like it is all Pres. Bush's fault..
  • Approve of abortion and partial-birth abortion...
  • Approve of gay marriage...
  • Think it is okay for a group like  ACORN make up fake names to register to vote and recruit untruthful, dishonest, and cheating people to do the same crime.  And, yes, it is a crime.
  • Can only win if they cheat and steal and try to skirt the rules laid out for elections.
I could go on, but I have but one more point to make.

I hear blacks say all the time that they are still not on equal footing, that they are still oppressed, that they still just haven't made the strides that they should be making. For one thing, I don't think that this is true, for I see many successful blacks around me as well.  I never hear them complaining.  They work hard, have an education and changed their lives, themselves.  There's a concept.  Now, getting back to the low standards that the "oppressed blacks" think they are in, think about this.  Blacks have been associated, affiliated, connected to, dedicated to the DEMOCRATIC PARTY for decades, thus being called a Democrat.  Now, I pose a question.  Being a democrat, you approve of gay marriages, abortion, and all the other stuff I listed above and more that I didn't.  These are the people you associate yourselves with.  And you have put yourselves in a party that has represented you all t hese years and for what?????  If you are still oppressed, on unequal footing, and being non-striding for decades, wouldn't it make sense to maybe try something different, say a different political party.  A success driven party.  The definition of stupidity is:  Doing the same thing over and over and expecting  a different result.  Don't be stupid anymore.  Drop the party that is keeping you oppressed, etc.  You have to see the correlation here.  Think about it.

This is in response to the posters who think a bus driver is on a power trip.  Have you ever tried to supervise 50 plus children with your back to them plus watch the road?  I am a former bus driver so allow me to explain assigned seats.  A bus driver is required to assign seats so that if there is damage done to the seats they know who did it.  They are also required to walk through and check the seats, floors, windows, etc. after every trip.  So your child got wrote up for putting holes in a seat but someone else sits with them.  Did you ever stop to think that the other person wasn't on the bus that day and that is why your child was the only one written up?  Same thing with the writting on the seat.  Do these children punch holes and write on furniture at home?  So why do it on a school bus?  Discipline starts at home.  And please don't say that your child wouldn't do that.  You would be surprised what your child will do when you are not around.  As far as sitting three to a seat, yes we have to do that sometimes.  But when we do, we make sure that the third person on the seat is close to the end of the route in the morning and the first in the afternoon so that they are not like that for the entire route.  Instead of listening to a child and upholding them in all their wrong doings, you should try listening to the adult who is trying to maintain order and discipline on a bus in addition to driving safely.  Instead of bashing the bus drivers, try supporting them.  Bus drivers are the lowest paid and the least respected in the school district yet are the most important part of education.  The majority of students depend on a bus to deliver them to school.  Without bus drivers most of the students wouldn't have a way to and from school.  A little support would be nice.  I have an idea, why don't you drive a bus?  Then you can see first hand what a tough job they have.

It appears that DSS has discovered that just becasue they say its so doesnt make it so. I have now received a new caseworker and calls from the area supervisor and the state office of the director. Its a shame that you have to prove a department to be   blatantly untruthful before anyone will listen to a common citizen. They were dishonest not only to myself but to a state senator as well.No one should be forced to contact the governors office before any action is taken on a citizens behalf. If not for my record keeping they would have once again got away with a total failure to serve the taxpayers.in fact they did get away with it,  because they never reviewed my child support case as they were requested to do by the judiciary committee attorney over 5 years ago.Could you raise a daughter on 48.00 a month? RE: Editor Note: “I will go with an American over a Muslim any day. Check out who the terrorists were that flew the planes into the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon and get back to me.”

What about Timothy McVeigh with the Oklahoma City bombing, and the Centennial Olympic Park Bombing with Eric Rudolph? They both were Christians…like McCain right?

No one in their right mind would associate those two to McCain based on religion. The 9/11 terrorist were extremist. Islamic people do not acknowledge them as Muslims, because Muslims do not condone violence. Much like the so-called Christians that burn down abortion clinics in the name of God! …now get back at ME!

And plus, Obama isn’t a Muslim! Have you actually READ the book? I wish the Replican’ts would stop taking things out of context….or better yet stop regurgitating snippets of info they found on Fox News or some other site.

Editor's note: I'm sorry, I thought that Obama's home church of 20 years preaching against whites and America was important. The fact that his preacher of 20 years supports Islamic radical Louis Farrakhan (who also preaches whites are "the devil") and is calling Obama the "messiah" and that he (Obama) would lead them to victory over the "evil whites" was also pertinent.

Silly me. I must be the racist. Where is Mecca?

I should accept" the Muslim beliefs, that women are property, so if your daughter is raped you kill her, not the men that raped her. It is justifiable to kill your daughter, or wife, if she goes into public wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt.

Re:No other dept. has given clvfd  any vehicle , they all had to be purchased..

This is so far from the truth. What about the two brush trucks that Merriwether has given you? (Just look out back and not the restaurant and you will see one of the trucks in your yard.  I believe it still has their name on the doors). I guess Merriwether is nobody till you need them to use their gas to put out your fires while you stay at the station looking for ghost or for them to bring you water. It has gotten so bad that even clvfd crew is calling their own trucks Merriwether Units (Power line call on Jacob Mackie).  The post about a truck being donated was not referring to the van that was for sale.  The one they were talking about is the old Edgefield County EMS ambulance that was given to clvfd by the assist chief’s job (or should we say where he barks orders).  No other department has been given an old ambulance. Sure is funny no one gives you anything.  This is prime example that you don't know what you are talking about on your post.  It is funny that clvfd was called out to an unconscious person and Merriwether states on the radio that all clvfd people are out of the district.  What’s up with that one? I guess the Chief is teaching all six of his crew to search for ghost.  I tell you a good place to look for ghosts is at your own station cause nothing has been living or working up there in a good while.  Again thanks Merriwether it would be nice for you to take over but I know that would raise the insurance in your area.

Looks like more cover ups. What about the board getting the firefighter tax break?  Is that against the law?  Oh wait this, is clvfd the “God sent” department for Edgefield.

You like facts....stick this on your bulletin board.
George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years.  The first six the economy was fine.
A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
4) the DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000
5) Americans were buying new cars, taking cruises,  vacations overseas, living large!...

But Americans wanted 'CHANGE'!  So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes--we got 'CHANGE' all right. In the PAST YEAR
1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;
2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!;
3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a10% increase);
4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS and prices still dropping;
5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure..
6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~

$2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS.

YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE...AND WE SURE GOT IT!  ....

REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANY OF THESE ISSUES, ONLY CONGRESS.

AND WHAT HAS CONGRESS DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.Stop and think about that for a moment

NOW THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT CLAIMS HE IS GOING TO REALLY GIVE US CHANGE ALONG WITH A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS!!!!

JUST HOW MUCH MORE 'CHANGE' DO YOU THINK YOU CAN STAND?

Did you see this today?
AN Obamanation .... A man at the center of a voter-registration scandal told The Post yesterday he was given cash and cigarettes by aggressive ACORN activists in exchange for registering an astonishing 72 times, in apparent violation of Ohio laws. Why isn't this in the news?

Editor's note: Reading it I see that the guy admits to 72 crimes and it is just an "apparent violation". Good thing he wasn't a Republican, he might have ended up in jail. A woman that refused to support Obama during an Obama campaign call had the Secret Service called on her and a Federal investigation is launched because a Florida Sheriff called Obama by his full name. It seems using Obama's middle name, "Hussein" is now "illegal". Quote: "The investigation follows Scott’s use of presidential candidate Barack Obama’s middle name in his comments before the crowd."

God help us. Even the national (liberal) media is supporting censoring speech.

Editor's note: Oil prices are expected to drop to $40 a barrel in the coming weeks. OPEC is expected to cut production to try to keep more US dollars flowing to them at inflated prices. I see the Democrats trying to stop domestic drilling as Republicans want to actually do something to provide a way to cut our money going overseas to Muslim states. Who is on our side and who is on the side of OPEC and supporting countries, states, and terrorists that want to kill us?

Okay, County Council just hiked the millage rate and property owners will be getting hit with another tax increase.  This is on property recently revalued before the housing crash when homes and property values were over-inflated.  Now with the market crash our property is worth 25 to 35 percent less but we’re still paying taxes based on the inflated values!?

This is on top of the news that banks are now adjusting their interest rates downward for mortgage holders who are having trouble paying, no such breaks for those of us who have played by the rules and faithfully met our obligations over the years.

Congress has just voted to give even more $ to those in over their heads and billions to reward the unscrupulous Wall St. execs. who made the crash possible.

We’re getting ready to elect a Commie, Islamic, sleeper-cell to occupy the White House - whose plan for economic improvement is increased unemployment benefits and taxes on small businesses.  When will Atlas shrug?

If you going to bring up those points on Obama, be sure to mention Palin’s husband being a member of an Alaska independence group that wants to secede from the United States (terrorist) and that Palin did a video greeting for this group’s convention earlier this year. Or that a preacher from Kenya who has a thing about “witches” laid hands on her at her church. Or that McCain sat on the board of an ultra-right wing paramilitary group when he was a member of the House. McCain’s involvement with the Keating 5. TrooperGate, etc.

...so your comment that, "...Either way, he needs to be kept out of the White House and preferably out of the Senate." could go for McCain also. And God help us if Palin should become POTUS!

I see the spin cycle is on at the EdgefieldDaily Laundromat!

Editor's note: Sure, forget that Obama is calling for everyone to join a "militia" that is equal to the US military as a requirement (a draft in "his army") and excuse his ties to a real terrorist. "My Muslim faith, My Muslim faith, My Muslim faith."

I will go with an American over a Muslim any day. Check out who the terrorists were that flew the planes into the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon and get back to me. Search and find Palin's or McCain's Preacher saying "God D*** America". I will not hold my breathe waiting.

Chapter 2 of Alinsky's book says: "The means-and-ends moralists, constantly obsessed with the ethics of the means used by the Have-Nots against the Haves, should search themselves as to their real political position. In fact, they are passive — but real — allies of the Haves…The most unethical of all means is the non-use of any means... The standards of judgment must be rooted in the whys and wherefores of life as it is lived, the world as it is, not our wished-for fantasy of the world as it should be."

Michelle Obama DNC: "Barack stood up that day, talking about a visit to Chicago neighborhoods, and spoke words that have stayed with me ever since. He talked about "The world as it is and The world as it should be...."All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do – that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be."

I also found an article here http://www.advocate.com/print_article_ektid62098.asp written by Michelle Obama and she repeats the same line multiple times.

Take note of the title of the article The world as it should be.

"I watched as Barack took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and instantly connected with every person in that room. He gave the most eloquent talk about “the world as it is” and “the world as it should be.”

"....And he urged us to believe in ourselves and find the strength to strive for the world as it should be."

"....This is why Barack is running for president—because he believes that if we work together, we can build the world as it should be."

"If we come together and work together, we will elect Barack Obama president on November 4—and we’ll start building the world as it should be."

(Deleted) scary as hell!!!!!

Ask yourself why they are hiding Michelle "I am, for the first time in my life, proud to be an American" Obama? She is more dangerous that Barrack. Why does every terrorist nation support Obama? Why the HELL are Americans so damn stupid?

I have a bus driver situation also. My child was wrote up on Wendsay for not waiting on the road side for the bus but rather in a car. I drive her to the road and park about 10ft from where the bus stops. When she see the lights flashing as the bus is approching she is getting out of the car. Before the bus comes to a complete stop she is walking towards the bus along with the other 4 students at this stop. I would think that the bus should be at a complete stop before the students start to approch it. Just for thier safty. On Thursday guess what happened? She was wrote up again, although she was not the late student on the bus. But thats not the only thing that happened on Thursday morning. She stopped to pick up her son and he was not at the road. Did she leave him? Of course not, she turned the bus onto the dirt road leading to her house to meet him, so he would not have to run so far. Then proceeded to back up to the mai n road. Do your Wander Minds want to know if he got wrote up? I dont even have to answer that one for you.

These people get paid a very minimum wage for a very high-risk job. If anyone out there complains about what these people do on a daily basis, then I have a suggestion. Get out there and do what they do everyday, it will make you think twice the next time

I guess the Dems were in favor of payday lending before they were against it.  While I personally think payday lending should be either outlawed or more heavily regulated, at least cap their interest rates at loan shark levels, it is the height of hypocrisy for the Dems to attack Shane on this issue.  If this is the best they can come up with, they are truly desperate.

This has to be one of the saddest things I've read in quite a while but definitely speaks volumes as to the mentality running rampant in our county today.

There are several non-white children attending Wardlaw Academy.  I don't say African American because as far as I know all the children attending the school are American born.  As were their parents.

Where as there are quite a few affluent families who send their children to Wardlaw, the majority of the children who attend come from families who struggle, working more than one job in order to send their children there.  They do this in order to get a better education for their children than the government run institutions.

There is a STHS bus driver that seems to be taking her authority (power in her case) to a level that concerns me as a parent. Why would you have 3 high school boys seating on the same seat from hwy 25 when there are seats that no one is assigned until the last stops, which is on the other side of Douglas Elm. Power Trip! This make no sense to me. Another student was wrote-up for putting holes in a seat(not in thier character at all) and fined $40, the driver found chocolate on a seat, although there are two students assigned to each of these seats, only one was wrote-up in both cases. Telling students its ok to eat and then write them up a week later. Lets not mention having cell phones. Some have received 3 days off the bus,( first offense) while other were given several verbal warning or just simple told she would hold thier phone until they get to school. What  ; ;you do for one, you do for all. Oh! Unless you are the son of the driver. He can have his legs in the aisle but not the 3 boys that share a seat for more than  20 miles. Lets not forget the time she let her son off the bus to go back to her house and picked him up while comming back around the circle. Telling the kids that there is to much laughing going on in the morning, so they will have a silent ride to school. This bus driver has really abused her position. This job is not cut out for everybody.

I presume this is some Negro Religion that tells how Jesus was born without a father. Since we are the minority, we also should have our own Schools, our own Board of Directors, and of course White teachers. Let the Blacks have a school board, black teachers and continue in their own self-destruction. Whoa !  What am I saying, this is the way it was until the 1960’s.   But  we can thank our Government for making the changes.  The Schools can’t add, can’t read, and certainly doesn’t have respect for it’s elders.  I guess when no one in your color has a Daddy,  and all your siblings have different dads, so why should you respect anyone. There are many morals that are different from whites and blacks. One of the biggest different is WHITES appreciates this Great Country we live in. Blacks constantly fight every-thing that is given to them by this Great Country. If the Whites don’t get our and vote then we will really be the MINORITY.

I don't think so.  Currently, ECH employees get their state BlueCross health insurance single coverage for free.  It costs county and state workers $148.50 per month for the same coverage.  When health benefits are brought in line with other government workers, the beleagured taxpayers of Edgefield County might pay attention.   ECH could save a lot of money by doing this....perhaps these funds could be used to pay off the county bond issue for the hospital and give us taxpayers a raise.  Now that's a shocking concept for the ECH board to consider !!!

I believe reasonable people can agree that one problem of the recent financial mess is the lack of accountability from our elected officials.  Individuals were elected (and appointed by elected officials)  to oversee important aspects of our economy and were either inept, incompetent or corrupt, yet nobody is being held accountable.

NOW, APPLY THIS LESSON TO OUR COUNTY AND OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM.  During the tenure of Mr Bruce Lee’s assignment of Douglas Elementary the school has failed to make AYP and is categorized as “ONE OF THE WORST SCHOOLS IN SOUTH CAROLINA.”  http://thevoiceforschoolchoice.wordpress.com/2008/10/02/worst-public-schools-in-south-carolina-list/.  (Regardless if you believe that he is at fault….MR LEE was ACCOUNTABLE to us, these public leaders and officials want the perks that come with the position, yet they need to remember that they must accept responsibility and CANNOT delegate the accountability, it is theirs solely).  So, much like the culprits of this financial mess, Mr LEE is rewarded by being promoted to the Principal of Johnston Elementary???duh??  Douglas Elementary, currently, a failing school is rewarded by receiving a principal with little experience….and she’s informed that she doesn’t rate an assistant principal …how’s that for logic.  Remember, school board elections are coming up….here’s our chance to exercise voter accountability!  Reform begins at home, let us not miss our chance….throw all the bums out and start over….just like we should with our Congress.

Thanks to such great cultural centers such as New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles our black folks have now killed more blacks than southerners ever have. The annual count of blacks killing blacks in America's cultural centers has soared past the three-figure mark. Barack wants to take away people's guns. We should ask him to take away the guns from the blacks because they are the ones most prone to use them.

Where is all this "new technology" that Sarah Palin talks about with safety in oil drilling offshore? The editor always pushes for offshore drilling but he really doesn't care if the oil dirties up the waters of the Gulf Coast. But one must remember, the editor grew up in Edgefield county, so he probably doesn't know how to swim.

Editor's note: Over 1 million barrels of oil seep up through the ocean floor every year naturally and the ocean "eats" it. Just the way God designed the earth to do. But, you don't believe in God. Re: Oprah Whinfrey's mother is now suing a credit card company because they gave her credit and she didn't pay her bill.

Okay, Oprah's mother is trying to rip off a credit card company and Johnny McCain ripped off taxpayers for $1 billion+ with the Keating Five. Sounds like the Democrats are still about $1 billion short of what McCain and his cohorts got from the American taxpayers from the Keating Savings and Loan scandal. Johnny flew around the country with Keating. McCain's wife entered into several investments with Keating and Keating gave Johnny over $350,000 for his campaign coffers. McCain loves for his suitors to steal money from the government so long as they don't get caught. John McCain cheated on his first wife after she had a life threatening accident that almost took her life. Johnny said she had lost her looks and he neeeded a trophy wife who had plenty of money to get what he desired out of politics. Johnny ignored his second wife so much, she became addicted to drugs. She and Rush Limbaugh need to hook up. They can both do some Oxycontin and have a good  time. Johnny really sounds like a traditional Republican. Divorce your wife, get her addicted to drugs, help your pals steal money from the federal government, try to coax federal regulators to cover it up, and then claim ignorance. Then he swoops in to Washington, gets the House Republiccans to vote no on the first bailout bill, he gets his buddies to input pork on both sides of the aisle, and then he votes for it. I thought McCain was a maverick against pork. I guess he says one thing and does another.

Editor's note: Like your messiah says... "My Muslim faith".. says one thing, does another. Oh, that's right he is a Christian in Rev. Wright's church preaching God D*** America and Obama's wife who gives speeches about "Whitey" being the devil. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Editor's post: Oprah Whinfrey's mother is now suing a credit card company because they gave her credit and she didn't pay her bill. A $174,285 bill. Like Obama's base, who he claims were all tricked into buying houses they couldn't afford and it wasn't their fault they could not pay (spare me) leading to the bailout, Oprah's mother is claiming it isn't her fault she didn't pay her bill.

Now, first off, Oprah is America's richest woman, why is "mommy" not able to pay her bills? Oh, she's a liberal just like Obama and everything is someone else's fault. In Oprah's mommy's case she claims, and I'm not making this up, "Her filing described the account as "unconscionable, and therefore, unenforceable because Valentina knowingly and unfairly took advantage of Lee's lack of knowledge, ability, and/or capacity when Valentina created the account."

So, the richest woman in America can't pay her mommy's bill (If I had her money my mother, my wife's mother, and many other people would not have to worry about paying their bills) just like super rich Obama lets his family members live is a one room shack on $20 a year while claiming he is looking out for the poor.

When are people going to wake up to what these people are all about?

Oh, and the latest voter drive by Democrats? They are registering people in JAIL to vote. Got to protect their base, you know.

Chances are he is a Nationaly Registered EMT and as long as he doesn't try to work in Florida ( They dont accept any states certification without you taking their state board)he can get work as an EMT, I doubt they check with SC to see if his lEMT certification is suspended or not, the company sees NREMT and he is hired. Most states have NREMT reciprocity, so you dont have to take their state board/BTW, EMTS aren't licensed they are "certified"so DHEC can pull his right to work in SC but not his National Registry. You earn a certification, you pay for a license.

My comments are in response to the Bobby Hickson case.  Certainly both families are experiencing a lot of pain because of what did or did not happen and we can all learn a lesson from this case.  I have two daughters myself and am still learning.  Lesson learned if Hickson is guilty? Don't let your children go to other people's houses except under special circumstances where you know who will be there supervising and what activities they will be doing.  If you have any doubt, they stay home or make other arrangements, they will get over it.  The accused and the victim were family friends.  You don't know how other people live and what they think is ok.  Even if it is a fellow church member (especially those - they can be the worst).   Nobody loves your child like you do.  Lesson learned if the victim is fabricating the story? Talk to you kids about sex, the good, the bad, and the ugly, all the time.  You know they hear about it at school, so make sure they hear it from you too.  I know the kind of thoughts I had regarding sex at 12, 14, 16 and I know they are having them too.  I find out from my kids as much as possible about what is going on in their lives and their friends/peers lives.  I do my best to let them know that if they mess up, they can tell me the truth and we will get through it together.  They don't have to play cover up.  Just tell the truth and we will get through it, no matter what, we are your parents and we will always love you.

Re:  I want to thank the person writing all the vile insults, you convinced me, I am definitely voting McCain.

It really doesn't matter how you vote, since as the editor noted, you have no constitutional right to vote. It really doesn't matter how SC votes. The only thing that matters is the tally of electoral votes on Nov.5. I'm not trying to sway you to vote one way or the other; however, my main goal is to convince you to move to Alaska so our state can start moving forward and makes gains in infrastructure development and even offshore natural gas drilling. If more idiots like you and 95% of the posters to Wandering Minds would relocate to Alaska, then and only then, can SC start to make gains and move forward. SC's 8 electoral votes are not going to make a difference either way; but, if we can get rid of the dead weight and move them to Alaska, then we could raise SAT scores; spend less on Worker's Comp claims; reduce the cases of domestic violence; increase crop yields in agriculture through better micro-farming techniques; bring in more high-tech jobs because of a better education infrastructure. However, with idiots like you our state will never make the gains we need. So I plead to all you deadbeats out there who are dragging down and holding us back, move to Alaska. Let them deal with the deadweight, because we just the state can't afford to support you any longer.

A President's pension currently is $191,300 per year, until he is 80 years old.  Assuming the next president lives to age 80, Sen. McCain would receive ZERO pension as he would reach 80 at the end of the two terms as president.

Sen. Obama would be retired for 26 years after two terms and would receive $4,973,800 in pension.

Therefore it would certainly make economic sense to elect McCain in November.

Another Thought:
Much is made of McCain's age.  Has anyone brought up the fact that Obama is a chain smoker and both of his parents died at an early age.  Plus Biden has had two brain aneurysms which could have killed him at any time.  If they both died while in office that would leave Nancy Pelosi as president.

I can't think of a better reason to vote for McCain & Palin.

Yesterday I was reading through the wandering minds and came across the article about the worker that was fired from the water dept. because he had stolen some items and sold them. Well here is one for you. The other day I pulled up at JET middle school to pick up one of my children and to my suprise the  big white Johnston city truck pulled up and picked up a little boy. Well I decided to see what this was all about and followed the truck back to Johnston. In my mind I said to myself I know this man is not transporting his child from school to home in a city vehicle. To my suprise again yes he was. I followed this person to a street next to his house, let the child out and leave going back to work where he pulled up behind the police station in Johnston. My question is can someone tell me who pays the salary of this person to pick up his child from school? Who paid for the truck he uses to pick up his child? Most of all WHO PAYS FOR THE GAS he uses to pick up his child? My answer to these questions would be the people of Johnston. To me this would be stealing from the people. What would happen if this person had an accident and this child got hurt who would be responsible? Someone needs to check in to this and  then some thing needs to be done about it. If this child needs to be taken to school then ride the bus like most or have the parent take him on his own time and in his own vehicle using his own GAS. We already have people saying Johnston is broke and this is one of the reasons why. Is this stealing from the people or what? I could have maybe let this go if it had happened once but if  it is checked into you will find out it has gone on for a while. I have been watching myself.  If this is fare then how many children will other than his can they fit in the city truck?

The latest reports show that the "Great Alaskan Pipeline" deal will not go through either because the cronies working for Palin in Alaska did not have the legal expertise or knowledge to acquire land use rights needed for the deal. It's all just hype and lies. You've really outdone yourself, Mr. Editor, supporting an idiot because she ran a welfare state which received more federal dollars per capita, by far, than any other state in the US. Your ignorance (must be because of that fine education you received at STH) is really floating to the top. However, small minds think alike, and yours is even smaller than Sarah's. Alaska has more "methheads" per capita that any state in the nation. What has Sarah done to alleviate that problem? Nothing! Reports show that her husband was once a big "tweeker" and  Levi (Palin's soon to be son-in-law, supposedly) never leaves home for a big moose hunt without a big bag of meth, and some weed to take the bite off his meth high. During this political campaign we've all seen our fair share of political adds - online and offline,  but I feel so strongly about this issue that I must ask all of you to watch this video as it exposes things that the media refuses to broadcast.  In today's economic crisis, everyone (the everyday people) are all wondering how and why this crisis even happened. PLEASE watch this video; it will explain some of these questions...it is about 10 minutes long. The slides go by quickly so you may want to use the pause button.

I would like to thank all of the students & teachers at STHS/STCC, the HOSA club at Strom Thurmond Career Center,  and Robin Herrin - sponsor of HOSA - for doing such a  wonderful job on the Change for Autism fundraiser to  benefit the Walk for Autism charity.  In one week these students raised almost as much money as groups who have been working all year.  HOSA presented WFA with a check for $500!! Thank you ALL for being part of 'Carsons  Crew'!!  The CEO sends a very special thank you to the
awesome HOSA members who helped chase after him and pull his wagon - he says y'all are the best!!

In addition to our bone-head politicians insisting that people can not be allowed to fail anymore (see: bicycle helmets, airbags, welfare, rapidly escalating to billion-dollar bailouts), we need to get them to stop pandering to those ridiculous people whining about price gouging.

You know what?  Gouge me.  But when I need gas and there is none, or plywood and there isn't any, I can say 'thank you' to my friendly SC government that made it illegal to raise prices when supply doesn't meet demand.

But you want to know the easy solution?

Raise the prices. Allow 'price gouging'. That will do three things:
1. Provide a disincentive to hoard.
2. Encourage conservation of supply.
3. Provide real incentives for enterprising people to meet the demand by increasing supply. This could be someone driving to Atlanta with his gas tanks in the back of a pickup, OR This could be suppliers diverting fuel trucks from destination A to B.

Why does government always fail?

Hellooooo!  I am here on the west side of the county standing in a dry creek bed.  That means it hasn’t rained here enough to start the flow of water.  My neighbor has lived on the west side for over 62 years and has never seen the creek on his property stop flowing and dry up until this year.  If the water isn’t falling from the sky, then it is not going to flow down the creeks for some time.  It has to soak down into the ground to some extent first.  If the water doesn’t percolate down through the soil then the wells are not going to remain viable and people on the west side will have to drill again and HOPEFULLY find water deeper and at a greater cost.  Does this sound elementary to you?  Well how about you political types of both parties get up, put your coffee down, straighten your tie and get to work making a lasting change for ALL OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTY.  Water is essential to life, not a luxury.

I see the mushrooms of political signs covering the roadside.  Why not, when and if you politicos are elected, leave a lasting legacy of your work by bringing county water to the west side of the county?  Listen, there’s people over here….not a bunch of peach trees!

Let me get this straight. Twelve Republicans, elected to vote for what is best for our country, decided to vote for President Bush's economic recovery package.  Then they got their little feelings hurt, pouted and voted against it.  I want to know who the spinless, whinning wimps are. You are a reporter, find out !

Editor's note: The US House website is about to crash because so many people are writing in to tell House members not to vote for any bailout, Republicans and Democrats. So util the site will load (been trying all day) I can't find a listing of who voted yes or no.

I can tell you how Rep. Barrett voted - No. Here's why.

What should we think of this Democratic controlled congress voting on the bailout when a whole bunch of Republicans voted against this measure.  And now it looks as though Palin is taking a nose dive http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/30/borger.palin/index.html

Where do we and the party go next in your opinion?

Editor's note: First off, I take anything said or written by liberals (CNN especially) with a grain of salt. Why don't we wait and see how she does in the debate this week. Personally, I'd like to see the Republicans flip the ticket, Palin-McCain.

And when you’re done with the one below….I now thank God that our forefathers gave us the 2nd Amendment And now know why Obama is so against it.  When I hear Obama ask for a civilian para-military force as strong as our US Military,

It just reminds me of Louis Farrakahn and the nation of Islam….and the thugs in their bow ties.

Who says history doesn’t repeat itself…when one wonders how the Nazi’s prevailed and good thoughtful people abandoned all sense of rational thinking and compassion….just look at how people are blindly following his empty rhetoric compounded with hate and vitriolic message of the Democrats.

I think that it should be noted that Douglas Elementary had the highest raise  in test scores in the district.  In stead of bashing a school, we need to give praise where praise is due. Douglas has many of the finest teachers in the district. Most of the teachers there have long stability with the district. Instead of always putting Douglas down, one should recognize the outstanding job that the teachers do. If Mr. Lee was not happy, then it was best for him to pack up and leave. One should also look at the number of teachers who also read educational journals, attend conferences, and give 100% to their school. Whoever wrote the comment about Johnston Elementary seems to forget that ALL teachers should be doing the work that was described.

My suggestion is that Dr. Crenshaw should possibly evaluate the performance of all teachers, and if the teachers at Johnston are so great, then maybe they should be moved to Douglas or other schools where all of their extra hard work would be shown there as well. A truly good teacher would want to see ALL Edgefield county students do well, and not just the ones at Johnston Elementary. The idiot who wrote the comment about Johnston Elementary should realize that the teachers at Johnston Elementary are not the only good teachers in the district. I do recall that the District Teacher of the Year is NOT a faculty member at Johnston Elementary. So the author needs to rethink her words of wisdom.

Mrs. Chera Clark is a product of Douglas Elementary. So, we are all hoping to see great things. It may be true that Mr. Sammie Williams catered to parents, but I am sure that other principals are guilty of that as well. Parental influence can make or break a school quickly. I am proud that Mr. Williams sought to make parents happy. It seems that the author of the stupid comment about Mr. Williams just did not get her way with him, so she wants to make everyone believe that Douglas is bad.

If a principal makes a school, then why not move them to different schools every year or so. Then, all of our schools would be great. A school’s reputation should not be judged  solely by the performance of a principal or its teachers. The students are the reason any teacher, administrator, or superintendent has a job.

So, I believe its time to leave Douglas alone. Time will tell where the real winners are.

so will Obama bring about more social change such as under President Clinton. This is a quote from Ann Coulter, like her or not, every bit of it is true. Now, why is it again, I am suppose to vote for BIGGER government?

Under [Bill] Clinton, the entire federal government put massive pressure on banks to grant more mortgages to the poor and minorities. Clinton’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Andrew Cuomo, investigated Fannie Mae for racial discrimination and proposed that 50 percent of Fannie Mae’s and Freddie Mac’s portfolio be made up of loans to low- to moderate-income borrowers by the year 2001. Instead of looking at ‘outdated criteria,’ such as the mortgage applicant’s credit history and ability to make a down payment, banks were encouraged to consider nontraditional measures of credit-worthiness, such as having a good jump shot or having a missing child named ‘Caylee.’ Threatening lawsuits, Clinton’s Federal Reserve demanded that banks treat welfare payments and unemployment benefits as valid income sources to qualify for a mortgage. That isn’t a joke—it’s a fact. ... In 1999, liberals were bragging about extending affirmative action to the financial sector. Los Angeles Times reporter Ron Brownstein hailed the Clinton administration’s affirmative action lending policies as one of the ‘hidden success stories’ of the Clinton administration, saying that ‘black and Latino homeownership has surged to the highest level ever recorded.’ Meanwhile, economists were screaming from the rooftops that the Democrats were forcing mortgage lenders to issue loans that would fail the moment the housing market slowed and deadbeat borrowers couldn’t get out of their loans by selling their houses. A decade later, the housing bubble burst and, as predicted, food-stamp-backed mortgages collapsed. Democrats set an affirmative action time-bomb and now it’s gone off.” —Ann Coulter

Re: Editor's note: Oh, Obama does not lie...He never knew Rev. Wright was preaching hate and racism for the 20 years he attended the church. He did not know his advisors were linked to terrorism, he did not know his mentors were certified communist supporters, and he never took money to protect the corruption that was rampant in the GSE Fannie Mae.

CW: You remind of Johnny McCain with your hate-filled rhetoric and false statements. McCain's campaign adsvisors have received 20X the dollars from Fannie and Freddie. Rick Davis, Co-campaign manager, has equity interest in a lobbying firm that lobbied against federal regulation of Fannie and Freddie for over 5 years. Sarah Palin believes in witches and you can see the ritual she went through on You Tube. I guess if Johnny is elected, she will begin her witchhunt and start casting out Americans who don't have the same beliefs as her. You know I don't agree with Rev Wright, but I will defend his 1st Amendment right to say what he believes. If Sarah was running the country, our 1st Amendment rights would cease to exist; just like when she burned books in Alaska, like John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath". Hooray, for the poster from Aiken FB. I knew that Aiken FB allowed women to serve as deacons, and I was waiting for one person in its flock to speak up.
Did anyone catch Johnny holding Sarah's hand through the interview with Katie Couric last night? If she can't stand up to Katie Couric, how will she be able to stand up to all those mean foreign leaders in the world. Even George Will and David Brooks (STAUNCH conservatives) have said that Johnny made the biggest mistake of his life picking Sarah "Smile" Palin. I wish I could be one of those pesky constituents who could say to Sarah "GOTCHA". Hey everyone, have a great day!!

Editor's note: Typical liberal Democrat. My post was all truth and no hate. Can't say the same for yours.
