Just
a quick comment on the Edgefield town meeting at the old Kendal
Mill. It was well attended, positive, and any critisism was
constructive. By the way, where were you?
Editor's note: As I stated earlier, I was spending the evening with my
wife after her being out of town for several days on business. She
arrived home about 7 pm that night. I informed Edgefield Mayor Ken
Durham of that fact the day of the meeting and asked him to contact me
after the meeting for a report. He never called. County Councilman
Rodney Ashcraft was also out of town at the time of the meeting, which
was also made known prior to the meeting. This information was not made
available to those attending the meeting for some reason.

The
board of local conservation organization, the one dedicated to the
bobwhite, has furloughed its entire staff. Staff at the
headquarters located in Edgefield were turned in their keys, security
access codes deleted and locks to be changed. Doesn't sound much
like furloughing to this wandering mind. This website, http://www.coveyrise.net finds
interesting insights into the organizations issues.

I
loved the comparisons of liberals and conservatives in today's
Wandering Minds. There is so much truth in it. Liberals really are thin
skinned and any disagreement or other view has to be wiped out or
changed. Why is that? Are they just that insecure? They just have to
have everyone agree with them or follow their views. It sounds
like little kids who have to have their way. People that have to
control others are really dysfunctional people and have other issues in
their lives. I think it really is insecurity and ignorance on their
parts. I think they need to mature a little (or maybe a lot!)
Conservatives just need to hold their ground. They really are the wiser
group.

I
would like to thank Ms. Blackwell and Mr. Ashcroft for co-hosting the
Merriwether Town Hall meeting tonight. In addition, I would like
to thank Mr. Bright and the members of the planning Committee for their
attendance. I wish that more residents could have attended the
meeting. It is important for all Merriwether residents to
understand that the future of our community is going to be dictated by
the re-zoning of the property owned by Haglar Industries, commercial
development near Murrah Rd and Martintown Rd, and the encroachment into
the Merriwether area by North Augusta. I hope that all of the
council members will remember when they have the 3rd reading Tuesday
night that the majority of those present tonight were against the
re-zoning of Haglar Industries' property.
For those concerned about subsidized apartments being built near them,
you can check this website:

It looks as if a new complex for older persons, "Savannah Meadows

Talking
to folks around town over the past few days, it's become quite clear
that I am not the only one who thinks that the trestle is a pretty
useless piece of architecture (if you want to call it that).
Thankfully, and very unfortunately, the higher-ups in the county are
taking note of this problem now that there has been a fatality.
However, eliminating the trestle would only eliminate part of the
problem. The biggest problem, as I see it, is our truck route as
a whole. Having traveled all over this country, I can tell you
that you can take the "truck route" around many small towns and never
even know there was a town nearby. Ours, however, happens to pass
through the most highly trafficked area of town. Now, I am not in
any way justifying the poor judgement of the truck drivers who try to
"squeeze" under the trestle, but it is understandable how a driver who
is not familiar with the area could miss the truck route. The
sign is so poorly lit and barely visible with all the other hullabaloo
of signs at the intersection. Add to that, cars pulling out of
the various businesses (in front of you most of the time), and how
quickly the left turn comes after you pass the sign, it's no wonder
that so many drivers miss it. So . . . we have that horrible
intersection at Pendarvis where how many accidents have happened (?),
the Sweetwater intersection, and the still horrible intersection at the
old Timmerman's store, where, if the big rigs are speeding, catch heck
slowing down in time to stop after they see the sign letting them know
an intersection is even there. There are two good
solutions: 1) put a BRIGHTLY flashing NO THRU TRUCKS sign up
before the Turkey Federation, where the speed limit drops, or 2) make
Star Road a NEW truck bypass. The second would eliminate all
those pesky intersections entirely. It would provide easy access
to Hwy. 23, 25N, and downtown. At a little expense, I THINK it
would be an excellent replacement for what we have now.
In closing, I think it's very unfortunate that the truck driver
involved in Monday's fatal accident, got off with pretty much just a
slap on the wrist. He should be held more accountable for his
obvious negligence. A ticket to a trucker for getting stuck under
the trestle is about as useless as a speeding ticket is to a regular
driver. It works for a day or two, then we're right back to doing
it again.
I am continuing to keep the Jay family in my prayers, and hope that
maybe some good or change will come out of this terrible tragedy they
have had to endure. God bless them.

When I read that it would cost too much to remove the tressle bridge in
Edgefield because it cost too much, and the bridge couldn't be raised
because it would cost too much, but it would be cost effective to dig
down two feet of the road so that the bridge would be higher? I'm
sorry. That's just stupid. So when a heavy rain comes and
water collects in the soup bowl and cars begin to hydroplane, that will
be cheaper. Cheaper for the county to cover all those potential
lawsuits because it would be their decision, their choice to cause the
road hazard.
Yup... can't fix stupid.

Someone
said that at least Obama is trying to work on the healthcare problem.
Baloney. He is trying to fundamentally overhaul our system, which is
currently the best in the world. He doesn't care one thing about what
is good for this country, he has a very set agenda and this is one of
the crucial things that needs to be in place for his agenda to happen.
Don't talk to me about Dick Cheney lying. He did more to protect this
country in a minute than Obama has done in his lifetime. You want to
talk about lying, look at the man in the oval office. It is absolutely
overwhelming to even begin to think about how this country has been
lied to and is continuing to be lied to. Stop dwelling on the past and
start waking up to what is really going on. How can people in this
country be so blind to the reality of what is going on?
A lot of people in Congress have good ideas about how to improve this
healthcare situation. Look at Jim DeMint. He actually has a good plan
that will correct some of what is really wrong. You don't have to throw
out the entire system. Medicare is such a wonderful example of how
badly the government runs things. Again, this president does not care
about the good of this country. He cares about himself.
The liberals in Congress are really showing just how out of touch they
are with the American people and they are arrogant enough to think they
can get by with it. Deeds in Virginia is the first to go down due to
this ridiculous take over. I think there will be the "Deeds Syndrome"
from here on. I sure hope so!!

How
about a nice, new pedestrian overpass to replace the trestle?
That someone had to die to get action on this seems awkward, if not
shameful. Take the thing down even if someone has to lose some hiking
trail, which shouldn't be necessary. Think about it-- road hazard as
cause of loss of human life vs. someone losing a hiking trail segment.
Which should be
more important?
Someone mentioned the Hwy 25 bypass road. What's happened along that
road is also awkward, if not shameful. Residential construction within
feet of the roadway. Plus a hospital, child-care center, and nursing
home. The road seems built to have complied with minimal requirements
for lane width and
shoulders too. Ever met an on-coming semi on that road? Other
communities have successfully banned truck traffic on specific city
roads. Post a sign prohibiting truck traffic and enforce. It works.
Truckers don't want tickets.

I
know accidents happen but the truck driver in the "Trestle" accident
should be charged with something more than "failing to obey warning

If law enforcement isn't going to take action as they should, then the

He told Tim Russert on Meet the Press that the war in Iraq would cost
between 2 aand 3 billion dollars. We have spent 1 trillion so far and
they are still killing each other. Dickie Boy told Tim that the oil
recovered and sold from Iraq would pay for the war. Where exactly are
the oil revenues? Dubya said that he would reform Social Security, did
that ever happen? Repubs say let's open up health insurance sales
across state lines, alright, to do that we would need to repeal the
McCarran-Ferguson Act of 1945. When the Dems threatened to do that the

For the person who wrote this comment - It obviously does serve a
purpose. What do you want people to do? Walk to where it
would end and drive across town to finish the trail? Furthermore,
there is a TRUCK ROUTE for a reason. This driver had no reason at
all to continue going on the business route. He states he didn't
see the signs? He apparently wasn't paying attention while he was

Blame
the trestle? First I would like to send my condolences to the young
man’s family. This was a senseless homicide in my opinion. Yes, I said
homicide. The driver of the 18-wheeler should have been charged with
negligent homicide at the very least. I am a CDL carrying driver. I
travel on average 1500 miles per week making deliveries in Edgefield
and Saluda Counties. It is my privilege to be held to a higher standard
of driving than the general public. I only wish that all commercial
vehicle operators felt the same. This accident does however shine a
light on the ineptitude of the SCDOT. There should have been a flashing
light warning system in place long ago. Given my experience, I am
convinced the number of serious accidents in this area could be greatly
diminished if our roads were in better condition.

I'd
first like to offer my condolences to the Jay family. If anyone
knows of a fund being set up for the family, I hope they let the
readers know since an unexpected and tragic loss can often put the
surviving family in a financially difficult situation.
I'd also like to comment on remarks made to "tear
down or shave off a portion of the trestle." While I'm sure your
remarks are make with sincerity, this is another example of a "nanny
state"...which essentially implies that citizens are not responsible
for their own actions....they need government to tell them what to do
and to take care of them. I've driven under that bridge...it is
safe, there is nothing wrong with it. I understand the clearance
might not be standard for today's trucks....if that is so, then mark
that route clearly stating that fact prior to the trestle, and ensure
it is not part of the truck bypass route.
I'm a commercial pilot, what the average
citizen might not be aware is that like commercial pilots, commercial
drivers possessing a CDL are held to a higher standard. They are
driving vehicles whose loads and gross tonnage requires the utmost
knowledge and professionalism. That driver should have known the
EXACT height of his vehicle and if the trestle was clearly
marked...then he should have turned around...no excuse. If an
operator cannot operate a vehicle which has the capability of killing
people in an instant...then don't possess a CDL. I'm dismayed
that many today don't truly understand the concept of private vs.
professional licensing. It is not wrong to hold professional
operators to a higher standard. I understand there was no intent
to do harm by the driver, but still, I'm surprised he was not charged
with vehicular manslaughter....one of the general legal definitions of
manslaughter is, "5. Killing in the prosecution of a lawful act,
improperly performed, or performed without lawful authority." While the
driver was performing a lawful act...it clearly was done improperly
being he is a trained professional and if he was driving without a
CDL...then he did not have lawful authority. I would be curious
why the driver was not charged.
If the trestle was not properly marked...then I
would contend that DOT has some difficult questions to answer.

Obama
statements and rebuttals regarding ObamaCare.
Obama: "Our collective failure to meet this challenge - year after
year, decade after decade - has led us to the breaking point."
Question: If we're at the 'breaking point", why doesn't ObamaCare start
until 2013?
Obama: "There are now 30 million American citizens who cannot get
coverage."
Question: For two years, you've said we had 46 million uninsured
Americans... what happened to the other 16 million?
Obama: "And every day, 14,000 Americans lose their coverage."
Question: Does that mean 15 million Americans will lose their health
care before your government plan starts in 2013?
Obama: "We spend one and a half times more per person on health
care than any other country, but we aren't any healthier for it."
Question: Then why do people travel from every country in the
world to get health care here in the U.S.?
Obama: "Put simply, our health care problem is our deficit
problem. Nothing else even comes close."
Question: Didn't the CBO and other economists say that the budget
deficit will grow by between $250 billion and $2 trillion just in the
next ten years?
Obama: "Reducing the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and
Medicaid will pay for most of this plan."
Question: If we can pay for "most" of health care reform by
controlling waste and inefficiency, then why does a $900 billion health
care plan include $820 billion in tax increases?
Obama: "...no federal dollars will be used to fund abortion."
Question: Then why did House Democrats defeat an amendment in
committee what would have stopped federal funding of abortions?
Obama: "I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits
- either now or in the future."
Question: So we're going to add '30 million' uninsured people to
government health care, not cut benefits for anyone, not deny care to
anyone, and it won't add a dime to our deficits?
Obama: "Reducing the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and
Medicaid will pay for most of this plan...the plan I'm proposing will
cost around $900 billion over the next 10 years..."
Question: If there is so much "waste and inefficiency" in
Medicare and Medicaid - two government-run health care plans - then
won't further government involvement lead to even more "waste and
inefficiency"?
Obama: "And I will continue to seek common ground in the weeks
ahead. If you come to me with a serious set of proposals, I will be
there to listen."
Question: Then why won't you meet with House Republicans, who
asked to meet four months ago?
ANSWER TO ALL ABOVE QUESTIONS: Joe Wilson's two words said it all!

can't the Town of Edgefield and the SCDOT trim the steel beams
supporting the tressle so that trucks with standard height trailers can
go under. Those steel beams were designed to carry heavy trains,
but now they only carry light vehicle and foot traffic. An engineer
could quickly determine if tressle would still be strong enough for
that and every month or so there would not be another incident with
trucks either having to be helped to turn around or them hitting the
tressle. This death should not have happened. PS: I know there are
signs etc., but when someone is driving and trying to see which road to
take, they can miss low height and no trucks allowed signs. Just raise
the tressle.

The
more fiscal details of the health care bills emerge, the more appalling
they seem. The Senate Finance Committee bill includes a broad
provision taxing all manner of medical devices. This tax includes
such "frivolous luxuries" as pacemakers, stents, artificial heart
valves, defibrillators, automated wheelchairs, mechanized artificial
limbs, replacement hips and knees, surgical gurneys, laparoscopic
equipment, and the like.
President Obama is planning to reduce the cost of medical care by
taxing it!
The most recent Gallup Poll reflected that 49% of respondents said they
believed that the Obamacare plan will increase their health care
costs. Only about 20% said it would lower them. It is taxes
like these that substantiate this kind of concern.
The origins of this new medical device tax are troubling as well.
The medical device industry had its day at the White House as did the
insurance industry, the drug makers, the nurses, and the doctors. In
turn, each group heard the White House request that they come up with
voluntary cuts in their health care costs and support Obama's proposed
changes in return for assurances that Congress would not impose deeper
cuts (or, in the case of the doctors, that it would actually rescind
cuts already scheduled under current statutes).
But, unlike all these other groups, the medical device industry refused
the deal. This posture enraged the tyrants in the White House who vowed
to punish the industry with cuts imposed by Congress. The result
was a decision by the revenue-hungry Senate Finance Committee to
extract billions in funds from the industry.
The legislation does not work like a sales or excise tax. Rather
it follows the model of the punitive tobacco settlement imposed on
cigarette companies in the 90s. It assesses an industry-wide
payment which firms must make in proportion to their market
share. It bars them from passing along the cost of the assessment
by charging more for certain basic products, but allows them to raise
the price of others to raise the funds for the fee.
So, the result will be that virtually every piece of advanced surgical
equipment will be subject to a price increase to meet the levy from
Washington. No matter that these devices often make the difference
between life and death and that, in effect, taxing them raises the cost
of vital treatments. The vengeful White House will have its pound
of flesh from the medical device industry for daring to be independent
and to refuse to knuckle down to Administration pressure!
This tax, imposed in a spirit of haughty arrogance, falls on totally
inappropriate objects. Valves, prosthetic limbs, pacemakers,
hearing aids, and such are essential therapies that make life longer,
better, and less painful. To tax them makes no sense.
Except in the world of sharp elbows and interest group politics that
grips this take-no-prisoners and show-no-mercy White House.

As you know, in recent days there have been numerous break-ins. When we

refuses to put in ramps. the entire property was not accessible to any
disbaled persons. they had locked gates and steps to the beach, pier,
and rooms. why does the state allow a homeowners group to refuse
to update their facilites? they should require at least ONE
wheelchair ramp on the property. they had 3 sets of stairs
entering the building one at each side and in the center) Is this not
legal discrimination of a group? If they want people to rent from their
homeowners group they shoud be required to rent to ALL persons not just
the able bodied. this reeks of "legalized discrimination"
and needs to be remedied by our state lawmakers.

the Bettis Park concession stand? If
'removing/forgiving/excusing' prior actions on the Concession Revenue

then what is the reason for the 'backdated' revision?"
Is the Edgefield County attorney present at the council meetings when
the Concession Ordinance issues are being discussed? Was the
county attorney present at the meeting when the 'backdating revision'
was motioned, discussed and voted on? Did anyone ask his legal
opinion concerning the 'backdating' of the ordinance? I assume
that the Edgefield County attorney represents the county and not the
individual council members. If there are legal/ethical
questions concerning the actions of council members and potential
conflicts of interest that councilmen may have, does the county
attorney have an obligation to speak up or only respond to questions
asked of him?
Editor's note: Edgefield County Attorney Michael Medlock attends all

Council members Ashcraft and Blackwell have refused to vote to

have been following the mess at bettis park and want to know how
(County Councilman Willie) Bright can be overseeing the money from the
concession stand if he is a county councilman? Did I read the last
article right? Is he claiming to be part of a nonprofit that is making
money running the (concession) stand? The article didn’t say one way or
the other. Can he do that?
Editor's note: In a word, no. The county recreation ordinance states
that all funds from sales at the concession stand “must” be turned over
to the county. Nick Wates and Councilman Bright contend that former
County Administrator (violated a county ordinance) to turn the
operation of the concession stand and profits earned over to the
“recreations leagues”.
However, according to Councilman Bright, the county owned concession
stand at the county operated park in Bettis Academy is going to a
non-profit that Bright claims “we founded”, not the leagues.
So, even if the backdated ordinance passes, the funds accumulated by
the non-profit, Bright can’t remember the name of, will still be in
violation of both ordinances.
Maybe it is time to turn the recreation back over to the private sector
that performed its activities flawlessly and did not cost the county
hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

The
Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) has released a new report on
high school graduation rates in the American Southeast.
Making real apples-to-apples comparisons difficult, the State of South
Carolina failed to report all of its graduation/dropout data to the
United States Department of Education -the data which SREB researches
used for their analysis.
Working with the information they could obtain, SREB researches noted
the following, troubling conclusions: South Carolina ranks 50th (dead
last) in "promoting power," a measure of the percentage of 9th grade
students who progress to 12th grade in three years. Only 61% of
freshman rise to become seniors on time. South Carolina ranks 48th in
"Average Freshman Graduation Rate" (AFGR), a measure of freshman who go
onto receive full high school diplomas. Again, the figure reported by
state officials is just 61%. South Carolina has gained only 0.2 percent
in its on-time graduation from the period from 1996 to 2001. Across the
United States, the average state gain was 2.4 percent, and the
Southeastern average gain was 5.6 percent during the same period.
While school officials in South Carolina self-reported a 2006
graduation rate of 74 percent, SREB researchers found the actual
"Average Freshman Graduation Rate" (AFGR) to be 14 points lower (61
percent).
SREB concluded that “Dropout factories” (those schools with the most
persistent and troubling failure to graduate their students) made up
half of high schools in South Carolina.
Randy Page, President of South Carolinians for Responsible Government,
an education watchdog group, expressed disappointment with the report's
findings.
"On one hand, South Carolina is spending over $12,000 per child at our
public schools, even during the midst of a serious budget crisis. On
the other hand, between one third and one half of students fail to
graduate from high school. Parents and taxpayers should be outraged.
They need answers, not more excuses."

SREB States: Milestones and Guideposts" may be found at http://www.sreb.org/

I was appalled at what I witnessed and heard from you coach. My son sat
on the side line even after I was told he will be put in the 4th
Quarter.
I was concerned when I realized by 3rd Q my son had not been put in the
game. Our family had come from Lincolnton to watch him play. My husband
and I discussed how we didn't think he missed a practice, but come on
even if he did by the 3rd Q they should have played him. At this age,
our kids are learning how to play the game. They do this by playing on
the field, not standing on the side lines wondering why coach hasn't
played them.
WHY? Is what my family was thinking, this game at Lions
Field was the Blue and Black and was made out to be a special night
(not for my son). I wondered if there happened to be other children
that did not get a chance to play.
After the game I got with the Coach and asked him the reason why my son
didn't get to play and Coach if I may be frank your answer Sucked and
hadn't made a bit of sense.
LIONS FIELD I hope you are listening because for the money and time we
parents put into football practice and games our kids should never sit
more than 2 Q on the sidelines. His stupid response was you don't
understand, Lions Field and North Augusta have different rules. "WHAT."
Oh they say only certain kids can play, the ones you think are good
enough to possibly win the game are the ones you put in but you are so
wrong. My son still wants to know what he did wrong. My response to my
son has to be bad leadership, the Coach should have put him in that
game and we were sorry his Coach was wrong.
Coach, if you want to judge these kids on who is good enough to play
just because you want to win a game MOVE ON these kids don't need your
kind of leadership. They need someone who realizes they are teaching
these kids the rules of the game, being a team player, and to have fun.
I am totally disappointed in your skills of leadership with these kids
all you have to do is to just try and put yourself in their shoes... By
the way Coach does your child play on the team? If he did, did he have

Is Mr. Bright also on the 'Recreation Committee'? Does the

If the relating of the 'cheerleader-selling-cupcake' incident is
accurate, it appears that Mr. Bright has excersized some level of
supervisiory/operational control of the Bettis Park facility including
the concession operations. If so, it appears that he may have
actively participated in circumventing the terms of the original

Mr. Bright has referred to a '501(C)3' that collects the concession
revenues. When was the '501(C)3' formed? Was it formed for
the specific purpose of collecting the concession revenues? Who
formed the '501(C)3'?
How is it legal/ethical for Mr. Bright to vote to approve a
'backdated' revision of the Consession Revenue Ordinance that might
have the effect of removing/forgiving/excusing his actions in
supervision/operations of the Bettis Park concession stand? If
'removing/forgiving/excusing' prior actions on the Concession Revenue
Ordinance is not the proper description of the 'backdated' revision,
then what is the reason for the 'backdated' revision?

President based on his race and not his platform. He promised CHANGE,
and we're getting it now and our great-grandchildren will be paying off

On
Octber 22, 1999, I was ever so slightly inconvenienced by our country's
border problems...I left my Tucson pre-statehood home in the capable
hands of my mexican maid, Veronica and my pool man, Manual, while I ran
down the street to pick up my two pounds of private-roast coffee from
the coffee roasters and to swing by the wine store and pick up my
latest case of Petit Sirah...I was stopped at Campbell avenue by some
kind of procession...fuming at the delay, I figured it must be topless
lesbians or some other such foolishness...It was a string of
hearses...there were twelve of them...I remembered that twelve Mexicans
had died in the desert a few days before trying to cross over...This
was Tucson's attempt, having this procession to the airport, to show
respect for these twelve men and women who died trying, just
trying...to get a little bit of the freedom and opportunity that we
celebrate (and denigrate) everyday.
While we argue amongst ourselves about our new president, the state of
our schools, and whether the Bettis Road concession money can be
found...can all of us aknowledge that these are small problems that can
easily be solved...we don't have to risk our lives in the Arizona
desert to survive and prosper...for America, and Edgefield county,
nothing is impossible.
P.S....I now drink Folgers and I can't look at a bottle of Petit Sirah

There
is a lot of discussion lately on here about a teacher at STHS.
This is nothing new to our staff. It is now beginning the second year.
I doubt that anyone here cares about her gender preference. There
is at least one other member of the staff who cares for what can be
called a different lifestyle but they are an excellent teacher and are
well respected in the school and in the community. Here is the
difference. Last year we had to deal with a new teacher making
many foolish and unjust accusations about other
staff members. This year it has gotten worse. Very few of
the male staff will be alone in the same room with her because of
charges she has made against other male staff and most of the female
staff are tired of her extremely friendly hugs. The tension
that this has and is still causing it harming the ability of the rest
of the staff to teach. She needs to grow up and keep the other
issues out of school and if she can not, then she need to find another
job out side of teaching.

all the years the people have given to County Government for working

can go on Cobra but who can afford that when you are not working.
It seems to me that we should be able to stay on County insurance until
we reach at least medicare age. Wasn't that what they did for
Teresa Harvey? Why one and not the other? I would be glad
to pay my part to stay on the same insurance I have had all these years
and still be able to retire now. This County expects too much of
us and wants to give nothing in return. Find out why they took
this clause out of the budget when Teresa went on Medicare.
Why can't we all do it? I have several years to go before
medicare but I have my time in with the county to retire. Help us

other areas, there would not be enough teachers in the county. STHS

Opinion
letter passed on with permission!
Dear President Obama,
Today I read of your administrations plan to re-define September 11 as
a National Service Day. Sir, it's time we had a talk.
During your campaign, Americans watched as you made mockery of our
tradition of standing and crossing your heart when the Pledge of
Allegiance was spoken. You, out of four people on the stage, were
the only one not honoring our tradition. We noticed..
During one of your many speeches, Americans heard you say that you
intended to visit all 57 states. We all know that Islam, not
America, has 57 states. We noticed.
When President Bush leaned over at Ground Zero and gently placed a
flower on the memorial, you tossed your flower onto the pile without
leaning over. We noticed.
Every time you apologized to other countries for America's position on
an issue we have wondered why you don't share our pride in this great
country. When you have heard foreign leaders berate our country
and our beliefs, you have not defended us. We noticed.
When your pastor of 20 years damned America and said that 9/11 was "
America's chickens coming home to roost" and you denied having heard
recriminations of that nature, we wondered how that could be.
When you later disassociated yourself from that church and pastor
because it was politically expedient to do so, we noticed.
When you announced that you would transform America, we wondered
why. With all her faults, America is the greatest country on
earth. Sir, if not for America and the people who built her, you
wouldn't be sitting in the White House now. Prior to your
election to the highest office in this country, you were a senator from
Illinois and from what we can glean from the records available, not a
remarkable one. We noticed.
All through your campaign and even now, you have surrounded yourself
with individuals who are basically unqualified for the positions you
appointed them to. Worse than that, the majority of them are
people who, like you, bear no special affection or respect for this
country and her traditions. We noticed.
You are 9 months into your term and every morning millions of Americans
wake up to a new horror heaped on us by you.. You seek to saddle
working Americans with a health care/insurance reform package that,
along with cap and trade, will bankrupt this nation. We noticed.
We seek, by protesting, to let our representatives know that we are not
in favor of these crippling expenditures and we are labeled
"un-American", racist". We wonder how we are supposed to let you
know how frustrated we are. You have attempted to make our
protests seem isolated. We noticed.
On September 11, 2001 there were no Republicans or Democrats, only
Americans. And we all grieved together and helped each other in
whatever way we could.. The attack on 9/11 was carried out
because we are Americans. And we noticed.
There were many of us who prayed that as a black president you could
help unite this nation even more. In six months you have done
more to destroy this nation than anyone since 9/11. You have
failed us. We noticed.
September 11 is a day of remembrance for all Americans. You
propose to make 9/11 a "National Service Day". While we know that
you don't share our reverence for 9/11, we pray that history will
report your proposal as what it is...a disgrace.
When Americans come together again, it will be to remove you from
office. You have made a mockery of our Constitution and the
office that you hold. You have embarrassed and slighted us in
foreign visits and policy.
We have noticed all these things. We will deal with you.

Could
you stop the smoking by employees at Edgefield County Hospital
(ECH)? Many hospitals, includung MCG, have stopped smoking on
hospital grounds. The main offenders are employees, not patients
or visitors. If you want to get GASSED, go hang out at the ER
entrance or the end of the extended care wing @ rooms 113-123. Go
COUNT the cigarette butts. this has been an ongoing problem
at ECH.
Now, fellow readers, expect a fully preprogrammed and precanned
response from administration at ECH. Gee...we can even write it
!!! It will sound like preprogrammed bureaucratese...Don't
believe them, any patient on the extended care unit is being subjected
to a daily gas attack by employees...This gas attack is shortening
their lives...They wiill deny it, but they are lying...
OH, GEE, WOW, How dare you say such horrible things...Yeh, we all know,
blah, blah, blah, what your POLICY is regarding smoking. I
don't want to hear the mantra regarding personal freedom.
When you're laying on your back in a hospital room getting gassed, it
sure ain't like you can walk out of a restaurant and not come back....
Now, if only the ECH board members, whoever they may be, could do
something besides eat a steak once a month. We might get
something proactive regarding health in Edgefield County. Why
aren't the ECH board member's identity kept a secret? They
are not on ECH's web site.
Editor's note: I have sent a request for a listing of all the Hospital
Board members. The list I have is outdated and I did not want to
publish inaccurate information.

Dear
Mr. Editor, With all due respect, It is painfully obvious that you do
not want John Brumbaugh as county admin. I for one would rather
have someone with local ties to the county rather than someone outside
the county that just sees a "JOB". Like the fine job of
going outside the county for a school superintendent, that sure was a
home run huh? The thing about having a local is if they don't
perform, they will hear about it from people who live here day in and
day out as Pettigrew did. If you don't live or know anyone here,
why would you care. And why you attack their past and/or current
jobs/profession is just wrong. I mean what did you do before your
disabling wrecks that qualify you as judge and jury? I'm not
trying to start a p#$$ing war with you, I just call it as I see it and
that is just my opinion.
On another note, the deputy that hit another vehicle head on, what if
the gipsy was not in one of their Big trucks? What if it was a
small car like mine with my child in the back seat?
Editor's note: First let me address a lie put out by Bettis Rainsford
that you refer to. I am not "disabled", I work for a living. It is true
I have broken my back in seven places in 1983. I broke my neck in three
places in 1991. I lost an eye a few years later in a work related
accident. I do not recieve any "disability" income for my injuries. I
do not need the government to take care of me or my family. We're fully
capable of that on own own.
Mr. Rainsford knew this before he told his lie, but printed it anyway.
Now everyone knows the truth.
To Mr. Brumbaugh. He's local. Okay, so what? Being local does not give
you qualifications. Your comparison to the School Superintendent job is
moot. Our local candidates for the job were degreed and qualified to
hold the posistion. Brumbaugh is not.
I do not dislike the man, I don't even know who he is. It is my job to
tell people who is applying for the job and their job history when it
is made available. What is wrong with facts?

i was walking in the area a while back when 2 cars and a suv from the
sheriffs dept blew by me at a very high rate of speed. none of them had
their blue light or sirene on. this was reported to the sheriff dept.
should not they have to obey the same laws as us when not using
emergency equpiment. i was told they were responding to someone
breaking out car windows. why would they respond to this with 3
vehicles but dont have enough manpower to solve buglaries around here.
i guess that we arent close enough to the tv stations and newspapers
for the sheriff to show up around here.
Editor's note: I know that Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey takes
the concerns of the public seriously. After the Letter to the
Editor by Mr. Allen a memo was sent to all deputies concerning the
matter including a training session on driving.
I know that there are many times deputies run "10-44" or "silent code"
to prevent someone actively committing a crime from knowing police are
close. I work with these men and women on a daily basis and can
honestly say that if I am a victim of a crime, I hope it happens in
Edgefield County. We have a top rate team of Deputies and Investigators
who solve a much larger number of crimes than those that get reported.

A
thought for the future. In 2010 we take the census. The Merriwether
districts are growing and the other 3 are not. So it seems pretty
certain new district lines will be drawn. Since it also seems obvious
that Minnie, Moe and Curley from the other districts have no interest
in advancing the county, maybe we should consider a realignment of
county lines. No, not combining Merriwether with Aiken but what about
McCormick? I’m sure we’ve all noticed the growth taking place on the
other side of the river in Georgia. Merriwether and McCormick County
have easy access to that growth. Can we do this? I don’t know. Should
we do this? I don’t know that either. Should we consider it ? Just a

goodness for cruise control). Quite frequently I see others
either
glued to my rear end or obviously speeding as they pass me going the
opposite direction. What a difference it is though when I
encounter the typical Edgefield County Sheriffs vehicle.
WOW! They are
frequently doing things I would only do on a race track, as they drift
through corners or absolutely tailgate others on the road because they
can't find a place soon enough to pass.
Hey, I am very familiar with being a public servant. Several
years as a correctional officer for the state, and now for the Federal
Government at FCI Edgefield. I go behind locked doors with
society's "finest" for 40 hours a week. I only ask that road
patrol officers keep in mind that those of us on the road without light
bars are probably law-abiding citizens, and the light bars just make us
a tad more sensitive.
Like Allen stated, just slow down. If we see your lights ablaze,

have the experience to be the (county) administrator. He’s a fine
businessman, a great father, a football coach and is very active in our
school. He’d be my pick.
Editor’s note: Great, from a used car salesman to a golf coach (not football)
to run
our county. All humor aside, the fact is that Brumbaugh is not trained
in the field of government administration, he does not have a degree in
government administration and he has never worked in the field of
government administration, unlike his competitors for the job who have
it all.
Not to mention that the state law requires the county council to make
their judgments for the position on the “administrative experience” of
the candidates.
So we, again, have candidates that have documented and degreed
“administrative experience” for the job and one who is always added
“off list” who has none. And, for a historical fact, the one with none
is hired every time.
Wayne Adams, zero experience when hired off list. John Pettigrew, zero
experience when hired off list. And now John Brumbaugh who was off list
and placed, like Adams and Pettigrew, on list.
Hey, call it a hunch, but our new county attorney’s buddy is going to
be the new hire. But, there is no such thing as a “good ole’ boy”

intend on looking into a lot deeper at Strom Thurmond High School.
According to the information I have so far, a student wore a shirt that
had the face of President Obama on the front with a red circle and line
through it (much like the no smoking signs, ect.) over his face. On the
back the shirt read “Socialism” and had the same circle with the slash
over the word.
While other students are welcomed to wear shirts in support of
President Obama, this student was singled out and told to turn the
shirt inside out so not to “offend” anyone and that the shirt was
political.
The mental midget that enforced this asinine so-called rule might want
to check with the US Supreme Court who has upheld that students do not
waive their First Amendment rights by entering a school building.
If it had been my child, the School and the School District would find
themselves in Federal Court so fast it would make their head spin.
However, those leading our school district are drunk on the Kool-Aid of
Barack Hussein Obama ll, “Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm”.
On another note, an

Yesterday,
[Tuesday] the Senate Finance Committee voted to move the Baucus health
care plan to the full Senate. We don't know the details because the
bill hasn't even been written yet! They vote first, and write the bill
later. Amazing. Only in Washington. To discuss what this means for the
health care debate, please join us tonight at 8pm for a conference call
with Rep. John Shadegg.
We do know from the summary they released that the plan limits
individual choice, adds layers upon bureaucratic layers and increases
costs for taxpayers, seniors, and middle class families. And it can't
guarantee people who have coverage they like won't lose it.
With Senator Snowe's vote, the proposal was passed 14-9 despite the
Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Director's testimony earlier in the
day stating that the total impact of the legislation was unknown
because of the lack of legislative text to analyze. Even with limited
information, the nonpartisan CBO recognizes that the plan will cost
$904 billion while leaving 25 million Americans uninsured--all at a
cost of more than $31,000 per covered individual.
What does this mean for you? In short, Washington is not listening. The
massive protests against government-forced health insurance during the
August town halls have been written off as an anomaly, and the exact
details of the legislation are now being hidden more than ever. A
recent blog post on the Patients First site explains why the conceptual
language is so troublesome for an accurate assessment of the proposal's
cost and effects to be made.

PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION
"We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help
everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more
riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the
blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our
great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and
establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt
ridden, delusional, and professional politicians who've never had a
real job. We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of
people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they
require a Bill of
NON-Rights."
ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or
any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire
them, but no one is guaranteeing
anything.
ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This
country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not
just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different
opinion, etc.; but the world is full of idiots, and probably always
will
be.
ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you
stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful; do not
expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives
independantly wealthy.
ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing.
Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly
help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing
generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve
nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional
couch potatoes.
ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That
would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not
interested in public health care.
ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people.
If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be
surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.
ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If
you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens,
don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in
a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV
or a life of leisure.
ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want
you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we
expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and
vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.
ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American
means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is
a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of
idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of
Rights.
ARTICLE X: This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you
are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you
came from! (Lastly....)
ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to change our country's history
or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in one true God.
And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any
faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution The phrase IN
GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, and if you are
uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!

I found this on a blog, yet Mayor Ken Durham and Bettis Rainsford says
EdgefieldDaily.com's regulated Wandering Minds is "bad" for "Edgefield

"It is the smell of fear so old and ingrained that it taints the very
earth. It is the smell of terror. It is the smell of death. Stay long
enough and you will understand the real Edgefield County, sprawling
along the Georgia border like some great sick beast sullen and
brooding, uneasy, malevolent, the stench of its old segregated systems
buzzing its blacktop highways like hot flies on the rotting veins of a
dying regime, the clayed ground so dank and red it seems as if it was
oozing up blood from the bodies of the murdered martyrs buried in its
fields and creek banks. Black martyrs.
"I don't even much go through there," I once was told by an older
African-American woman who lived in neighboring Aiken County. "I just
drives around it, always. It's bad things happened up in Edgefield.
It's bad things still happening."
One flees Edgefield County in deep fear, hoping you can leave the
images behind you. But you cannot. Ghosts first emerge from their own
graveyard, but they do not remain there. Like some deadly, unidentified
disease, the Edgefield Terror has slowly spread itself north and west,
infecting the entire country."
I will not link the statewide news service blog since so many people
commenting on the happenings of Edgefield County use such vulgar words.

If you want younger generations to stay in Edgefield County then job
creation would be the way to keep them. However, one obstacle for
people moving to, or staying in Edgefield County, is the education
system. The biggest problem with the education system is the discipline
and the uninvolvement of the majority of parents. Of course there is
mismanagement, but this cannot compare to the daily problem of dealing

HOW
TO WIN A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IN 12 DAYS
Although President Obama had only been in office for 12 days before the
nominations for this year's Nobel Peace prize closed, the entire
process actually takes a full year. According to the official Nobel
Prize Web site invitation letters are sent out in September. Every
year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee sends out thousands of letters
inviting a qualified and select number of people to submit their
nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The deadline to submit
nominations is February 1. -- Two hundred five names were submitted for
the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, 33 of which are organizations. A short list
of nominees is prepared in February and March. The short list is
subject to adviser review from March until August. At the beginning of
October, the Nobel Committee chooses the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates
through a majority vote. The decision is final and without appeal. The
names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are then announced."
Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize Friday morning. Over the last
decade the only requirement to win the prize was that the nominee had
to be critical of George W. Bush (see Al Gore, Mohamed El Baradei and
Jimmy Carter).
President Obama has broken new ground here. Nominations for potential
winners of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ended on February 1. The
president took office only 12 days earlier on January 20.
Let's take a look at the president's first 12 days in the White House
according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel
Peace Prize:
January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.
January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information
requests. Held an "open house" party at the White House.
January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take
ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for
interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how's that working
out?)
January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions
(with our taxes) in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with
Tim Geithner.
January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.
January 25: Skipped church.
January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary
Clinton. Attended Geithner's swearing in ceremony.
January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.
January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense
secretary in the afternoon.
January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on
lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.
January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working
Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.
January 31: Took the day off.
February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.
So there you have it. The short path to the Nobel Peace Prize: Party,
go to meetings, skip church, release federal funding to pay for
abortions (with our taxes) in foreign countries, party some more.
Good grief.

the "Big Red" being returned to the Citadel. I would be very
surprised if that happened based on similar requests made in the past
by northern states to have their Civil War flags returned. As a
matter of fact, I remember when the Minnesota State Legislature asked
the state of Virginia to return a battle flag captured during a well
known conflict. The flag had been on display in the Virginia
Senate for years. Virginia's response to the Minnesota request?
"Come get it if you think you can take it!" I would assume that a
flag from the Citadel, the group responsible for firing the first shots
of the Civil War would be one heck of a badge of honor.

Confusion
reins at County Council. Anybody going to vote, did we vote, what
are we voting for, what is this for? One clear issue
Bright, Dorn and Kneece voted to change zoning in a residential area,
not in their district but in Mrs. Blackwell's. Does it matter
that the residents do not want industrial development, commercial next
to where they live? Just think folks, you will soon experience
more traffic, more noise and dangerous conditions on property that Mr.
Hagler says he has no plans to do anything with at least for the next
5-10 years. Yea, he just wants to increase his taxes. He
probably plans to sell it once it is rezoned for much more
money. Can't blame him , just think it is sad politics as usual
in dear Edgefield County. It is obvious that the 3 unaffected
councilmen willingly voted for the change even though it may be
detrimental to the residents. After all they aren't your
constituents and don't vote for you. The Planning Commission
states zoning is not their business. The comprehensive plan has
nothing to do with zoning. Right, when it says industial
development is not compatible with residential areas, the
Planning Commission recommends rezoning the area adjacent to the
residential area to industrial development. Now doesn't that make
you feel really confident in your planning commission and council?
Watch out residents, you built a home or bought a home in a residential
area doesn't mean you can guarantee it will remain that way..
Good luck homeowners if you choose to sell your home after this
rezoning you can expect either a difficult time selling it, hope you
can sell it commercial or take a big cut in the value. Your
county council at work doesn't it make you proud?
Can't figure how to track concession stand and gate money?
Can't figure if it was voted on and if so what the vote was? No
wonder this county is standing still. Long list of those signing
up to speak. Oh that is the sign in list. More
whats than clear answers.
Welcome to Edgefield County, come on in future residents we will give
careful consideration to taxing you to death, we will make sure we
spend your money and don't you dare ask us to explain our
decisions. If we make a mistake and get into trouble, our lawyer
will get us out of it. What???Someone explain to Mr. Dorn that is

Wow,

accomplish. What in the world has happened to the integrity of the
prize? What a crock. Of course two other recent American recipients,
Jimmy Carter and Al Gore, give you kind of an idea of what the
political stand the committee takes. I think Obama getting the Nobel
Peace Prize has really made us more of a laughing stock in the world
than losing the Olympics, losing continued value in our currency,
seeing how Iran and Korea respond to us, seeing China not wanting to
buy any more of our debt (who , would?) our deficit running up and up
and up, etc. etc. Wow, what an accomplishment for the U.S.-other
countries are asking the same question some of us are -- "What did he
DO to earn it?" He just talks and talks but what has he
accomplished? Still there are his faithful supporters who are just so
enamored by his rhetoric. Some of these people are even intelligent,
yet they can't see the forest for the trees (or they are just
lost in the forest). What is it that they see that most of us don't?
Maybe the question should be "Why can't they see what most of us do
see?" Right now the world is asking, "How do you win
a peace prize when all you have done is talk about it and you have not
accomplished anything toward it?" Very good question. How exactly
does that work?

it about time we stopped smoking in public establishments in Edgefield
county ? I went to lunch today and was just about gassed by the

employees. Aiken county and the state of Georgia already have
this. Also, can we eliminate smoking in and on the grounds of
health care establishments. Banning smoking from the interior of
health care buildings is not enough. You get gassed on the way in
and out-overwhelmingly by the employees. The smoke flows into the
buildings every time a door opens.
I noticed recently that Medical College of Georgia Hospital (MCG) does
not allow smoking anywhere on the grounds of MCG. Personally, I
now do most of my dining out in either Aiken county or Augusta because
of their smoking bans. I am sure many others do the same.
In the current economic, non smoking ordinances make sense if they are

Where have you and the other neighbors been during the last two council
meetings when Mrs. Blackwell and Mr. Ashcraft voted against the
rezoning of the Hagler property? I guess you thought since
these two represent the local districts you had no need to show up and
voice your opinion. You probably assumed since they knew
your feelings and represented you, the other three would listen and
vote accordingly. Guess again. Those three council
members use any opportunity to support their vote without
explanation. A no show by the neighbors who will be
affected gives the impression no one really cares and implies, in their
minds, approval with their votes. Since Hagler has no plans to
expand or anything else for the next 5 or 10 years you have nothing to
worry about, right? You better think again, if you can't see the
stars now just wait, you won't be able to tell if it is day or
night. The noise is bothersome now, just wait. You want
your council member to represent you? You have to support their
efforts. Should you have to show up in force? No. In this
county you do. Will the other council members care? No. If
you hope to have change, you have to first be vigilant, second you have
to stand up and put pressure on.
While you may not always agree with the editor of Edgefield.com,

To
the poster who has called out the Johnston coaches... You wrote in your
comment that, and I quote, 'At the beginning of the 10-11 year old
game'. That statement alone should wrap up everything you 'think' you
know about rec football, let alone the coaching of other teams. There
is no 10-11 year old teams. Last time I checked, that also included
Bettis. It's obvious you have no idea what you're talking about so you
included all coaches from all teams. Why would you do something like
that? You have no idea what takes place at those practices and you
certainly don't know those people who have volunteered their time to
coach this area's children. It's even more obvious that you're not a
coach yourself and have never been one because you would have never
made such comments. Youth coaching is a tiring, challenging position.
And until you've done it, you have no idea what's involved. I'm sorry
that any children have been injured on any of the teams (Johnston is no
exception in the injury department), but unfortunately this is
football. There will be injuries and unless you know beyond the shadow
of a doubt that the kids hurt one another ON PURPOSE you have no right
to assume they are being 'coached' to do so.
I will also let you in on a little secret- today's youth don't need
help learning to be violent. They pick that up quite well from lack of
discipline, the atrocious video games they are allowed to spend
countless hours playing, and society in general. Football is giving
them another choice. And the coaches selfishly sacrifice their time and
energy to make that possible. Trade places with any one of those
coaches for a season, then come back so you can tell us all what you've
learned.

that the purchase of the property and the remodeling of the lower 4,000

a second injury in which a Bear player threw the quarterback to the

Gen. Stanley McChrystal made an open appeal in London last week for

for troop withdrawal and airstrikes against Al Qaeda targets.
"The short answer is no," McChrystal said last week in London when
asked if Biden's approach was feasible. "A strategy that does not leave
Afghanistan in a stable position is probably a short-sighted strategy."
I'm not the one to say if McChrystal is right or wrong, and now, the

Chairman Kneece stated when the numbers were received "We have

made sure to hide all information. If you have nothing to hide, why are
you hiding the information? Kneece stated he "didn't like the numbers"

I'm not so sure there is a Federal law requiring this. (Maybe someone

was a "request" from the Secret Service to the makers of color laser

Can't find any reference to an inkjet printer or other means of

being short two Paramedics. Those of which have yet to be replaced. On

Well
it looks like Jeremiah Wright’s curse on American has turned around and
bitten his comrade Obama and their hometown, Chicago. While
Wright's curse may have been effective against America, just
maybe, Providence smiled on a country that is not ashamed to publicly
display a prominent memorial to Jesus. Hopefully Obama will find
a modicum of humility and Wright will be more careful pronouncing
curses.

If
the County Council is doing things that are not legal or the
"leadership" is not doing things in the way it is spelled out to do,
what can we do to report it or investigate it? Is there an entity to
oversee these things in the state? I am tired of these people just
getting by with all of these crazy things they do that are not done
legally or done the way it is suppose to be. It seems to me that the
lawyer for the county should be held accountable for making sure things
are done legally and appropriately. Where is he in all of this? I am
not originally from here and I am just absolutely amazed at the lack of
concern by these people, and the "leadership" in Edgefield, in
following the laws that are in place. I guess the laws do not apply to
them. Is that because these people are so afraid of someone or are they
so indebted to someone that they just let it happen? What a messed up
system it is here in Edgefield. That is probably why it is not a
growing and thriving place. If someone really loves and cares about
this place, as I understand some of these "leaders" do, why are they so
bent on just taking care of their own needs? Selfish, selfish,
selfish.
Sounds like this whole administrator thing is just one more debacle to
mark up for this council. The only two real council members are
obviously not informed of the details and they are a minority vote.
Hopefully we can get rid of the other three in the next election. Maybe
new blood in the council would help get rid of the good ole boy system.
Seriously, who do we need report some of these things to? Again, where
is the county lawyer in all of this?
Editor's note: Reporting the 20 year politically connected will get you
nowhere. You want them out, vote them out. You are correct that the
reason we never grow is because the same people keep doing the same
stupid things over and over expecting a different result. Of course,
the majority are all Democrats - Monroe Kneece, Norman Dorn, and Willie
Bright.

"As a citizen of Edgefield County who has had the need to call for EMS
help several times, once to save my husband's life, and several times
to transport my parents to the hospital, I must say the EMS which
responded to my calls were excellent. They were there when they
were needed and I am thankful for them. Until you are qualified
and step in and do their jobs, you should not be throwing "stones" at
them. Where would we, the citizens of Edgefield County, be in
times of medical emergency need without these dedicated
professionals? Thank you EMS for being there!"
First off, I am glad EMS was able to help you and your family in time
of need. I'm also glad everything turned out well. Your family was
lucky. There still are a few competent EMTs and Paramedics employed by
Edgefield EMS(though I can count them on one hand), and who knows
how long that will last. As for your statement about being qualified,
stepping in to do their jobs, and not throw "stones". You don't know my
qualifications, my experience, or my knowledge of what transpires
inside of Edgefield EMS(nor do I care to expound on them). Since we are
speaking in metaphors, I am not throwing "stones", they are simply nerf
balls(those soft foam balls that don't hurt when you get hit by them)of
truth. It's obvious the truth hurts(especially when you are doing
things that aren't right), and it may feel like a "stone" being cast.
It has obviously gotten attention somewhere in EMS, now they are
showing up to the Rec. Football games(they are progressing, but still
have a long way to go.). Thank goodness they were there the other night
when the young man got injured, he would have had to lay in pain on the
field for a half hour. Here is another one for the director.... Remove
the plank from your own eye, before you attempt to remove the splinter
from mine. In other words, you are not with-out sin, so don't cast
judgement on me.
P.S. Mr. Editor, I did not state that you took one position or the
other. In addition I thought this was a personal opinion column, in
which I provided an opinion. "I think" doesn't constitute an "I know".
But it's neither here nor there, this is your forum.
Editor's note: The only correction I had was asserting that I would
agree with you. I refrain from most conversations in the Wandering

would think that with the number of years that Monroe Kneece has been

Since he doesn’t follow proper procedures as Chairman (public votes,

Working
people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days
interesting.
Well, for example, the other day my wife and I went into town and went
into a shop.
We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out,
there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.
We went up to him and said, 'Come on man, how about giving a senior
citizen a break?'
He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a
Nazi.
He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn
tires.
So my wife called him a s--t-head. He finished the second ticket and
put it on the windshield with the first..
Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20
minutes.
The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.
Personally, we didn't care. We came into town by bus and the car had an
Obama sticker.
We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's
important at our age.

my camper is not safe to live in(cry me a river, build a bridge, and get

one that's been living in it for the last 6 years. I'm sure if it had a
high potential to catch on fire, it would have by now! It's ok, waste
the Sheriffs office time with minuscule things, they don't have enough
work to do. Grow up, get a life, and keep up with your dog, I don't

yes, this is STHS, some things never change.
The DECIDER of what sports make it and what sports do not make it is
the ATHLETIC DIRECTOR for STHS. No one else has any input on this
decision. Also, the Athletic Director makes all budget and monetary
decisions. If a football game has a gate of $10,000, the Athletic
Director decides where that money goes and how it is spent. No one else
has any input. Period. The principal has no authority to override any
decision that Athletic Director makes pertaining to athletics. If a
fottball team can have 15 coaches, it seems they could have found one
coach for the Female tennis team; however, it was not priority as is
anything with the new athletic director. Why would a principal of a
school give up the job to become an assistant principal anyway? Does
the athletic director/BOE have plans for the Fottball Head Coach
position? Is Lee on his way out? Maybe he should have taken that
Greenwood job?

The
information released to Mount Vintage property owners is that the
Carolina First matter has been resolved and there will be no sale on
October 2. With any luck this means Mr. Rainsford can take his
greed, arrogance and ego and go run another of his investments into the
ground and Mount Vintage can begin to recover from his reign.
Editor's note: This is an interesting scenario. I have information that
says the deal was reached long before the last sale was to take place.
The sale was then advertised again after a mix-up at the Citizen News.
However, the new legal notice did not run for the third week (Weds) as
required, but no court documents showed the sale was called off as of
Wednesday.
I have received documents stating a new owner has already placed his
personnel in place at Mt. Vintage, but have no official confirmation of
that taking place.

I
agree with the poster about the location of the Heritage
Festival. Oakley Park is a lovely place but not for a
festival. As a senior citizen, I have difficulties with the rough
terrain. How are people supposed to dance? Of course with
the bands selected over the last two years dancing is not an
option. If you're going to have a pig-picking just call it
that. I have made these comments to the chairperson. Who
has input into what happens?
Editor's note: Related to your comment, I have also been contacted
about the deed to Oakley Park that clearly states no alcohol is allowed
on the property. An issue I have been told will be pushed. I have no
idea if it will affect this year's festival or not. I have read the
documents at the courthouse and can confirm that the claim is true.

was at a youth soccer game Monday night watching a great game when an
adult male starts yelling rude comments to one of the coaches!
Now,unfortunately, this is not uncommon at sporting events, but these
coaches are all volunteers. They take time out of there schedule to
coach your kids & teach them how to be good sports. The last thing
they need is a parent on the sidelines running their mouth when there
not willing or perhaps capable of doing the job themselves. Next time
your on the sideline help these coaches by setting a good example &
positive encouragement. If you cant manage that try not speaking at all
or just stay home!

"All
that glitters is not gold" Cash for Clunkers - The True Facts
Well..... Surprise! Guess what.............? If you traded in a clunker
worth $3500, you get $4500 off for an apparent "savings" of
$1000. However, you have to pay taxes on the $4500 come April
15th (something that no auto dealer will tell you). If you are in the
30% tax bracket, you will pay $1350 on that $4500.
So, rather than save $1000, you actually pay an extra $350 to the feds.
In addition, you traded in a car that was most likely paid for. Now you
have 4 or 5 years of payments on a car that you did not need, that was
costing you less to run than the payments that you will now be making.
But wait, it gets even better: You also got ripped off by the dealer.
For example, every dealer in Los Angles was selling the Ford Focus with
all the goodies including A/C, auto transmission, power windows, etc
for $12,500 the month before the "cash for clunkers" program started.
When "cash for clunkers" came along, they stopped discounting them, and
instead sold them at the list price of $15,500. So, you paid $3000 more
than you would have the month before. (Honda, Toyota , and Kia played
the same list price game that Ford and Chevy did).
So lets do the final tally here:
You traded in a car worth: $3500 You got a discount of: $4500
---------
Net so far +$1000 But you have to pay: $1350 in taxes on the $4500
--------
Net so far: $350 And you paid: $3000 more than the car was
selling for the month before! Net [-$3350] We could also
add in the additional taxes (sales tax, state tax, etc.) on the extra
$3000 that you paid for the car, along with the 5 years of interest on
the car loan but lets just stop here.
So, who actually made out on the deal? The feds collected taxes on the
car along with taxes on the $4500 they "gave" you. The car dealers made
an extra $3000 or more on every car they sold along with the kickbacks
from the manufacturers and the loan companies. The manufacturers got to
dump lots of cars they could not give away the month before. And the
poor stupid consumer got saddled with even more debt that they cannot
afford.
Obama and his band of merry thieves convinced Joe consumer that he was
getting $4500 in "free" money from the "government" when in fact Joe
was giving away his $3500 car and paying an additional $3350 for the
privilege.
