I would not tolerate their rudeness any longer, but look no further, it is right here under your nose, check out the classified ads in this paper under Services. I switched to this company and the prices are lower than anyone in the CSRA, you will be glad you changed. Oh yeah,and  if you mention that you read this in this paper, he will give me a little discount.  Talk about southern hospitality you will find it with this fine gentleman. No annual charge on his tank either. Let the readers know how pleased you are once you change.

I just had to comment after reading the post knocking the County Line Fire Dept. I was a victim of a house fire when I was younger. We were not at home and our house burned to the ground, leaving us homeless and without any possessions. My whole family was heartbroken over our loss. I can assure you, if our home had been saved by fire fighters, we would not have cared if they had been wearing pajamas or anything! People shouldn't be so judgemental about what clothes a person wears! If your home is burning you don't care how a fireman is dressed. only gratefullness for them being there to help. Find something else to harp about. These men, putting thier lives on the line to save your home is more important than what they are wearing!

In response to the person putting in their 2 cents worth on Ray Walker Trucks.  You are exactly right.  I also live on the West side and one of those trucks almost caused my daughter to have a real bad wreck.  She reported it and it took her a long time to get over it.  We have been reporting them for years.  How many accidents is it going to take before someone is seriously injured or even worse,  killed.

I have been frustrated lately with my customer services going to other countries.  Because I purchase huge quantities of office supplies, I'll purchase from (one store) rather than (another).  (The second's) calls are
answered in India or the Philippians.  I had to call for help with my home internet service and got help from tech support in another country.  I'm not liking this global economy!

We went to the Merriwether Middle School Desert night at the school tonight (Tuesday) and saw that Edgefield Daily sponsored some of the tables. Thank you for supporting our local schools. It is nice to know that some of the money they spend advertising is returned to the schools.

The comment made about the fire on Sunday at the Merriwether Fire Chiefs house  was in extremely poor taste.  We should be offering her support during this time and not making smart comments about her fellow volunteers coming to her aid.  We have a group of citizens that give their time and risk their lives for us in times of need and we should be offering praise and not cutting them down.  Some I would like to say thanks to everyone on the Merriwether Volunteer Fire Department.  Great Job!!!!!!! 
 
And to the person that made the comment I am sure you would appreciate them racing to your house to help like that did on Sunday afternoon for the Fire Chief.

The Ray Walker Truck crash was no surprise to me.  I live on the Westside and those trucks fly up and down Martintown Road and North Martintown Road all the time.  They need to be patrolled more closely and kept off of secondary roads!

It would be interesting to see statistics on how many wrecks Ray Walker Trucking has been involved in over the course of the last two or three years. I can think of at least a half dozen that I am aware of. If you see them, you know why. I have contacted the State Highway Patrol and Transit Police about it. But, I have not noticed any change in their wreckless driving. As always, thank you for reporting the facts.

To the poster moving to Edgefield and wanting to know about cable and satellite.   My personal opinion is DO NOT GET NORTHLAND CABLE.  Get (satellite).  When I had the misfortune of having cable, every time it would rain, the cable would go out for HOURS sometimes all night.  But don't think they adjust your bill for the DAYS you didn't have service.  Since I have had satellite - about 4 years  it may have been our for a bad storm maybe 4 or 5 times and then it was only our for a matter of minutes.  So I strongly suggest (someone else), the price is about the same for a whole lot more channels.

there are alot of dogs running our neighborhood and tearing up trash and crapping in our yard. Our dog doesn't even crap in our yard.  Anyway when we call animal control and they come out the dogs are locked up, come to find out the dispatcher that took our complaint call WAS OUR NEIGHBOR who owned the dogs. The last time the animal control officer came out he said if the animal is damaging your property even using it for his potty. SHOOT IT. He even said after you have killed the animal you can call your neighbor to come remove the dead creature.  There is a leash law and if the owner is not keeping track of their animals and comming on your property you are allowed to kill it.

I went to the Graniteville parade Saturday. I noticed all the Fire Departments that sent apparatus to represent their departments and community. I also couldn't help but notice all the fireman in uniforms but one, CountyLine. As I stated before "representing" their department's and the community. You would think CountyLine would wear something that looks better than blue jeans and t-shirts? CountyLine's Chief has all that money to spend on bug deflectors, chrome simulators and diamond plate, aka bling-bling, did you ever think about uniforms for the firefighters? You always talk about looking good? Boy you blew a big chance on "looking good" this time.

Just to sound off............To all the husbands, wives, their parents and other family members:  Do not blame the best friend of a person who decides to leave their marriage.  Too many people look for someone else to blame when they should be looking right inside themselves.  No best friend has the power to convince a person to leave home.  And honestly, I think the only friend who would try to do that would only do so in a situation of physical abuse or some other harmful situation.  Nobody takes pleasure in a divorce especially when children are involved.  So if you are one harboring ill feelings towards "the best friend" you need to stop.  It's wrong and you are not seeing the situation for what it really is.  More than likely that "best friend" has encouraged the friend to work things out if at all possible!

I couldn't help but laugh about your Christmas tree story. It brought back good memories about my late wife. Between walking 200 miles looking for the "perfect present" and walking 200 miles at the Mill's tree farm looking for the "perfect tree", that was the most exercise my wife did all year. As a matter of fact, I had just made this same comment to my children at Thanksgiving. But, I would walk those miles again ten fold and go through the ordeal of decorating the tree (not to even mention the outside), if I could have her here for Christmas. Everybody should cherish the holidays (and all times) that they have with their spouse and children. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Pretty good analysis of what is going on in the US today. Let's wake up  America!!
There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some Exchange students in the class.  One day while the class was in the lab the Prof noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.  The professor asked the young man what was the matter.  The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back.  He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question.

He asked, 'Do you know how to catch wild pigs?'

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke.'You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground.   The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn.  When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.  When they get used to the fence, they begin to
 eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence.  They get used to that and start to eat again.  You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side.  The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America. The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy
subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. While we continually lose our freedoms- just a little at a time. One should always remember 'There is no such thing as a free lunch!'

I heard a woman was killed in Johnston last week but I never saw anything about it in the news. Did you miss it or did I miss it?

We have a lot of stray dogs around our house and I have called the sheriff's office about it and they have come out and put traps ect but it don't do any good. I ain't blaming the sheriff because I know they done all they can do, but why can't I just shoot (the dogs) and be done with it?

For the whiner about the idiot teachers:  Maybe you should try working with the teachers to sort out any problems instead of calling teachers idiots.  With your attitude, you are the one comes across as the idiot.   My children go to MES, MMS and STHS.  Their teachers have always been willing to dicuss any problems with me and help work through them.  Overall, I am very pleased with the quality of their teachers.  Yes, there have been a couple of bad apples, but my children have survived them as I did when I was in school.   I am thankful for all teachers because I could never be a teacher in today's environment.  The generation of children being raised today are taught from birth to be victims and have not been taught manners and respect for authority.  The children are defended to an extreme when wrong, instead being allowed to face any consequences. Parents have little involvement in their children's education and treat school as if it's a daycare.  Then they cop an attitude when their children don't perform as expected.

This is in response to the post about Frank, Malik, Rebecca, and Shenequa and their many problems. As a parent of a child in high school in Edgefield County I feel the need to respond. First yes the teachers should be held accountable as should the student and the parents. Each one has their own responsibility in a child's education. But while Malik is working two jobs it could also be old Billy Ray paying for his big truck with the "big ole" tires. And if Frank is not bringing the things he needs to class are we sure he has the means to get these things, he could have borrowed from Billy Ray but he spent his paper and pencil money on a new deer stand, you know hunting season is coming up! And while Rebecca is up all night taking care of her baby so she is tired I am sure sweet Susie is also just as tired from staying up with hers, or staying out all night ensuring that there will be one on the way. And let us not forget Shenequa, who has no one as this could also be Mindy, Morgan, Christy, or any other Sally, David or whoever, and if this is the one that has no one then that is when the responsibility falls back on the rest of us to help this child that is on their own and still trying to go to school. It does no matter what this person or anyone else thinks "take a village to raise a child" and instead of pointing the finger at certain ones, we should all be the village for all of these children as it could easily be yours, mine or anyone else's!

I am proud to say I am from Johnston.  I love the jewel of Edgefield County.  I am upset at how junkie the town looks at the old (Hardware Building).  I didnʼt think that the town allowed merchants to keep their wears on the sidewalks except during side walk sales. As a child I was told not to ride my bike on those sidewalks because it would bothers people's walks and was unsafe.  You canʼt walk now down the sidewalks because of those treasures. I have also notice this business is open, at least last Sunday, on Sunday Mornings.  That I believe is against the State Blue Laws.

I am on the same page with you when I see Christmas replaced. Two weeks ago I was looking at local cable channel 16 and saw the "Happy Holidays" greeting for the Town of Edgefield.  I thought that it was expressing greetings through the whole holiday season and a  "Merry Christmas" greeting would follow. Then I saw  "Happy Thanksgiving" and realized that it is not. "Happy Holidays" has replaced Christmas. Christmas is the nucleus that makes the Holidays. The holidays is just the season. Where does it stop? Who posted this greeting on channel 16? The tradition of giving gifts arrived from months of travel by the wise men. They left their families on a blind and tough journey to take gifts far away to the baby Jesus.

A Travel that was lured by a vision to more than one man and guided by a star. Giving at the manger was thanks to God for his blessed gift. These gifts were acquired without knowing who the person was, the age, or  where they would be found. The miracle of Christmas  is summed up by efforts and events that were only granted by God . There are no mistakes in the Bible. It is our duty to see that God's word is carried out. The word Christ is in front of the word mas that makes up the word Christmas. The Baptist preacher just off the square stated that "sin will blind you". It seems that some of our leaders and officials are in the dark. A few people have created a diversion in this county by intimidation, takeover, and control. That is why a handful of people would not show up to express their opinion. The other reason is the fact that they are to occupied with other things to (SEE) that they are losing their rights. Batesburg High puts God's law first over man's law . They have prayer before the football games and we do not. Who will pay the price for the neglect of removing God's word and the word Christmas? Just as the wisemen watched the star, God is watching you.
  
Thank you Mr. Editor for providing a way for people to express their words so we can bring respect and dignity back to our Government.

Augusta.  As for me, I am hitting the local stores and then I'm going to Aiken to get what I could not find here.  You can't find everything you may need local. i.e. Belk's or JB Whites quality clothes, some electronics, etc.  Although there are a great deal of "gift and specialty" items that make great presents.

He's baaaaaackk! Ryan B., the ubiquitous radio talk show host on station WAAW in Aiken was thought to have been banished but he is alive, though not so well intellectually, on the so-pcalled Christian broadcasting station. And he's back bashing the white race, implying that whites are reponsible for most of the ills laid upon the area's black population. This time he is not naming names. A $2.5 million civil judgement against him for telling lies about Augusta Sheriff Ronnie Strength has tempered Ryan B.'s use of personal names. I doubt that the sheriff will ever see a dime because Ryan B. not only has little in his pockets but is a convicted felon, having served time in a federal penitentiary for stealing Medicare money, the same money that goes mainly to black folks who fall ill and need medical care. He constantly refers to his pal Bishop Bush, but insiders say the Bishop has his own financial shenanigans to explain away, but that will be a matter for another time. Ryan B.'s invective is disgraceful enough, but even more disgraceful is for a radio station owner to give him access to the airwaves. Because radio stations depend mainly on advertising revenues for operational expenses, I suspect WAAW is on life support because I have never heard a single advertising spot purchased by white merchants. So what more can you expect from a station that operates out of a mobile home east of Aiken? By the way, I am a white person who counts a large number of blacks among my friends.

As a citizen in Edgefield County and of course also a taxpayer, which pays the salaries of the people working in office, I feel the need to say WHAT IS GOING ON in the assessor's office? I have read and re-read the different post about relatives being hired and people being fired, people making to much money for a job they aren't qualified to do, and really want to know (and since I do I assume there are others that do too) what is really going on? It seems there are a lot of accusations flying around and also a lot of half information.(Not pointing fingers at anyone just wanting some clarification before I form my own opinion) Don't we all deserve to actually know what is going on in our county? And just a question but why is it all right to print Ms Bryant's name but not the name of the person fired? Just curious about that one. As I said above I am not judging anyone or forming any opinion just want to know what exactly is going on and do appreciate the information, if it is going on in a position that mine and many other's tax dollars pay for I feel we all have a right to know!

Sometimes the problem is not the fault of the student, but it still affects the ability of the student to succeed or want to succeed.  The "cream of the crop" bring supplies to class, do homework, study for tests, take advanced courses, and make plans for the future. Open house and report card pickup nights are attended primarily by the parents of these
high achievers. As a teacher, I am tired of the constant derogatory remarks made by people who apparently know little of the day to day operations of a high school. Yes, teachers should be held accountable, but parents and students must be willing to do their part too, and that is sadly lacking in many situations."

This applies to all ECSD teachers. The factual information was obtained from information on teachers at STHS/JET. I applaud those educators doing a standup job. If you are a dedicated teacher who does her/his
job, then the posts should not bother you. It seems that only those who know they are "idiots" and are
bothered by their own performance would respond to the comments made by this observer. If you are an educator and you know you are doing a slack job and are enabled by incompetent admins, then get your act together and start earning those paychecks. If you are a sorry parent, then get your act together and make sure your son/daughter is behaving in school, doing their work, and acting like a civilized human being.

Somebody asked a while back if (Edgefield Mayor) Ken Durham bought stuff local so I want to ask if the editor does. I know he lives in Merriwether which is closer to N. Aug so I bet him and his family shop there not Edgefield.

This is in response to the poster who criticized the high school teachers and complained that only the "cream of the crop" students are being taught. "Good ole Frank, Malik, Rebecca, and Shenequa" deserve--and have--the same opportunities as the high achievers, but "Frank"never brings his books or pencils to class; "Malik" is working one or two jobs after school, not because he has to help his family but because he has to make a big car payment and pay insurance; "Rebecca", who is sixteen, is too tired to listen because she has been up all night with a new baby; and "Shenequa" is living on her own with no family support and trying to figure out how to survive and why no one seems to care. Sometimes the problem is not the fault of the student, but it still affects the ability of the student to succeed or want to succeed.  The "cream of the crop" bring supplies to class, do homework, study for tests, take advanced courses, and make plans for the future. Open house and report card pickup nights are attended primarily by the parents of these high achievers. As a teacher, I am tired of the constant derogatory remarks made by people who apparently know little of the day to day operations of a high school. Yes, teachers should be held accountable, but parents and students must be willing to do their part too, and that is sadly lacking in many situations.

First, the felony charge of Ms. Bryant's relative, are you sure, positive it's a felony charge?? hint: I already know the answer.  Second, if you can't indentify the person, why would you post such info in which you can't effectively support? Oh because you got confirmation from the county administrator, finance director, and Ms. Bryant. YOU personally got the information from each person, straight from the horses mouth, including speaking with Ms. Bryant personally and her actually confirming to you she hired a relative with a felony over their head?? Hint: I already know the answer.  Finally do you know what false statements of fact about a person in written or other permanent form is called. Libel. But you already know that!!!
 
And the Magistrate Judges...common man's court.....delivered by the "common man"--bunch of bull. If you're gonna deliver the law, be trained and licensed on it.  You don't perform important brain surgery by simply observing a few surgerys and then scrubbing in. You shouldn't hand down something as important as the law without the proper foundation either.  Has nothing to do with being "common."

You guys are funny.  I am somewhat familiar with the Keisha Bryant and the "hired relative" case.  Mr. Editior I dont know why you would rely solely on what was said from the County Administrator or finance director for any truthful information in Edgefield County.  It appears they are trying to say Ms. Bryant is related to everyone.
 
As for the Magistrate Judges.  As for the Magistrate judges they should  have a legal backgrounds, be licensed attorneys,  I mean hey they're just dealing with the LAW.  As for the Magistrate court being the "common man's count"....AND.  You can't be a common man if you're a lawyer? You can't relate to the common man and be trained on the law? Being a "common man" or being able to relate to common people is not lessen by the person being a lawyer.  And just because you don't have a law license don't make you a "common man" either. Get real!! Anyone handing down the law, affect others lifes should be trained on the law and licensed.  Someone, with a "business" degree, no law degree, not licensed, who only has to observe a few cases to be an "expert" on the law, gets someone to appoint them to a lifetime position, and all of a sudden they are a "common man" for the "common people" and qualified to hand down and interpret the law?? I think not. Being common don't mean being smart, don't mean being effective.  Maybe they are too common that's why there's so many mistakes in that position, especially with regards to some of the situations at some of the local churches. Someone who was trained in the law would know better.

Why are you so bothered by Keisha Bryant? You mention she's not a licensed tax appraiser in South Carolina.  It appears you don't have to be licensed to do much of anything in South Carolina, at least not in Edgefield County.  The Magistrate Judge, a person who interprets and hands down the law does not even have a law degree.  She's not even a LICENSED Attorney!!   As for this family member Ms. Bryant hired. The "family member" you mention is NOT related to Ms. Bryant. She's not a bloodline relative or even an in-law. Absolutely no relation whatsoever.  And I'm 100% positive you have absolutely nothing to show they are related.  Second, that particular person does NOT have a "Felony over their head."  Contact the Sheriff, prove it, then print it if it's so.  Third, you didn't Expose anything that led to anyone's firing...give the date and time of your posting. You have truly proven that you are no more than Puppet On A String printing what you're told to print.
 
And Just in case this gets lost and don't make it to be published on Wandering Minds. I'll send a copy to the newspapers I'm sure you want to clear up these lies someone had you print.

The felony charge (yet to be tried in a court of law) is a matter of arrest records and would have shown up on a background check, if one would have been done. In order to prove the connection I would have to identify the person and that is not possible since she was not hired at a salary of $50,000 or more a year. If you want to know if I was the one responsible for bringing the information to light, just ask our county administrator, finance director, and, yes, Ms. Bryant. But you knew that already.

As far as our Magistrates, they are not required to have a law degree, thank God. Magistrate's Court is the "common man's court" and is to be delivered by the "common man".  The worst thing we could ever do is require a Magistrate to be a lawyer.

On the other hand, the state does require Ms. Bryant to be properly licensed to hold her job. In fact, because she is not licensed we have paid her over $50k a year and had to hire a second person to "assist" her at... guess how much - $50k a year. Her name was Sally Fox. She was properly licensed. You'll never guess who we have on the payroll now to "assist" her. And there are problems in that situation that will be coming to light very soon.

I am the original poster of "idiots teaching idiots" post, and I wanted to respond to some of the comments
that have been posted since. My information comes solely from facts obtained in years of gathering data
(anecdotal) from inside confidential informants. I could name 20-25 teachers who qualify for the "idiot"
status and give you factual information to back up this solely subjective judgement. But I will not do that, because it is not my job or right to ruin their lives by identifying who they are to the general edgefielddaily.com reading public.

That is your job, if you are the parent of a child who is attending STHS/JET, or if you had a child who attended in the past. There are many parents out there who have had children placed in a class with one of the judged teachers. They may or may not have brought forward their concerns, but nothing was done about it. There exists English classes that watch movies everyday, not as reinforcement for reading assignments, but instead of the latter. There are math classes that don't cover any skills that are the criteria of that exact course. There are Social Studies classes (History/Geography) that don't use a map or teach an event that happened in history. There are Science classes where the teacher puts notes on the board and never speaks to the class or offers any learning instruction at all. I could go on and on, but I think the point is made.

We should just not teach the so-called "Cream of the Crop"; our schools should be teaching all students.
The NEWS we see out of ECSD is always a small group of students whom have achieved at a high level. What about good old Frank, and Malik, Rebecca, and Shenequa? Don't they deserve the same opportunities as everyone else?

You know it is funny how teachers and administration are always blamed for poor student performance. Why don't we look a little closer to home? I think there are a few parents who need to stand up and take responsibility for their children. I believe it all starts in the home. It is the responsibility of the parents to teach their children to be motivated and act appropriately. All the teachers and administration can do is deal with the problem the best way they can on a day to day basis. As for the baggy jeans issue, I am faced with it every day. I am not happy about it, but I think it is more important to have the child in school. As long as I don't see a crack, I am okay.

The people (County Council) selected people just like themselves (County Administrator, Tax Assessor, County Auditor, and Property Tax Appeals Board).

The common thread is do what I (we) want to do, not what is right and equal for all citizens.

You certainly did deserve to enjoy Thanksgiving with your family if anyone did. I was just asking about the fire because I heard that the house burned completley down and the family lost everything. I was just concerned that if that were true then they may need some help.Usually you will see that news carried on our local stations and I never did hear it or know if it were true. I actually heard someone tell it in the grocery store and figured the details would be on the news that evening .People clean up for the holidays and get rid of unneeded things and I thought they might want to donate them to this family.

(Tax map # 166-00-02-021-000) You just can't make this stuff up. First she screws up everybody's assessments, then hires a family member with a felony over their head (until it was exposed on EdgefieldDaily.com which led to the firing of the family member - not Ms. Bryant as would be the case anywhere else) and now she posts "You lives here" as an address. For your information, quiet a few teachers at STHS have Master's degrees and above. We even have some teachers that are Nationally Certified. I am not only cerfified, I am also highly qualified in the area that I teach. Further, I have a Master's degree and will begin my National Certification next year. I will also have you know that I am not a product of this educational system, but am proud for the small bit that I am able to contribute every day. How dare you put down our students! I happen to enjoy each and every day that I am in class with my students. So what if some are a little more challenging than others. I dare you to come and do what I do in a day. Maybe then you will appreciate what the teachers of Edgefield County do on a day-to-day basis. Shame on you for your pompous attitude!

This is too much of a racial issue....If you are white and comment on the baggy pants, then you are racist or you are accused of not understanding "black culture."  This is a nightmare in schools and the white teachers are sick of this issue with black males.  It is a no-win situation and Mr. Thompson can't be everywhere to enforce this.

These kids need to research the history of baggy pants.  It was started in prison years ago to let fellow inmates know they were available for sex.  Today it is a fashion statement in the hip-hop community.

I, like someone else who wrote in about Northland Cable, have had unanswered e mails.   That tells me they do not care whether they please the customers or not.   When does the contract with them expire?    I would like to see Ga. Public TV on cable, but they do not even answer my e mails.   All I have seen from them is a huge rate increase.

It is unfortunate the poster of "idiots teaching idiots" did not stop with his post sooner.  Readers have been rightly chastising  him for his personal attack on STHS teachers, and have forgotten about his initial observation. The poster stated that we should not be proud of average performance of a school system from a state which is certainly in the bottom 10% of schools nationally.  No one has yet to address this concern.
    
The editor defended the teachers and put blame on the ECSB although this particular version of the board has not been in session long enough to accept total responsibility for the County's poor academic performance. 
    
Various posters defended teachers, who probably are decent people; defended the students, who do not need to do well academically if they are plumbers or carpenters; blamed parents for lack of involvement, rightly so; blamed the testing, typical response if you don't have the answer to the problem or don't like the test result; blamed FCHS, totally bogus argument designed to deflect issue; or were silent on the problem.
     
Wake up people,  until we admit that the performance of our schools is not satisfactory, we will not set appropriate expectations from all contributors to our education system including teachers, students, parents, and board members.  Making excuses for the performance of any of them leaves them all off the hook.
     
Would someone answer this question with a yes or no? Is the performance or Edgefield county schools at a level which satisfies the expectations of the county taxpayers?

re: "idiots teaching idiots". I graduated from STHS. I can assure you there were not then and are now no idiots
teaching. I don't know what my SAT score was, but it couldn't have been higher than a couple of numbers above my waist size! And whose fault was that...mine because I didn't apply myself to studying. It certainly  wasn't the teachers fault as I wanted to make just good enough grades to graduate. I do agree in one sense that the teachers are "idiots' because why would a dedicated, hardworking teacher take on a task of trying to teach a disrespectful, trash talking, foul mouth, etc., (not to mention seeing their pants hanging down with their underwear showing and them holding their crotch to keep thier pants held up) person an education?  If I had acted like that when I was in school, I would have had to stand up in class all day long, if you catch my drift. As for me, if I werequalified, I wouldn't have the job of teaching if it paid triple the salary, as I wouldn't last one hour teaching. I learned respect at home and know now that I have should have studied hardier in shool, but I don't blame any "idiot" teachers....learning begins at home and education starts in school. As far as
"idiots teaching", look in the mirror and ask whom are you "teaching?". If you want to talk to or about idiocy take your concerns to ECBOE. After that meeting, when you  see a teacher, offer an apology!

Here's my theory of one, and/or all. the cause of Global Warming :
As we all know the center of our earth has an extreme hot core.and, mother earth has created a cooling insulation below the outer crust of earth...and, in my opinion,  this insulation is;  layers of OIL !!!!  And., we are depleting this oil insulation...not only from earths groung...but, also in our oceans... thus, warming and melting the North & South poles....I have made an effort to notify the TV news media of my theory but, never received a response... The only conclusion I can come to is;   THE OIL INDUSTRY  !!!!!

I just want to thank our cable company for not carrying the games offered on NFL network. Way to go, after all, why offer a NFL channel AND pay for the games they show. Who wants to watch football on day on Thanksgiving anyway.
 
Really, we have to have the worst cable system period. I don't know of anyone that has Northland Cable in any of their other cites that likes them either. No family channels, no football, but we can shop, play golf and watch hunting shows all day. Whoever handles the contract for our cable needs to look elsewhere. Aiken changed why can't we? Emails and complaints to Northland go unanswered. I guess I just need to join the small disc owners and take my buisness elsewhere, with the current rates I may save money.

Here is a link and a copy/paste to a mention about the FATS (Forks Area Trail System) in an Asheville, NC based outdoor magazine.  As you are probably aware, western NC offers some of the best off-road cycling in the United States.  For this magazine to include a trail at FATS in the best bike trails in the entire SE is saying something about the trails at FATS.  There are presently four trails at FATS, and I'd rank them in this order:  1.  Deep Step  2.  Great Wall  3. Skinny  4. Brown Wave.  Yet it is the Brown Wave that is the most popular (I think it is because it is the easiest out there, but still loads of fun to ride.)  BTW, in addition to #2 I have ridden, #3, #4, #6, #9 and #10 - and they are all classic trails.

To the person who made the comment about idiots teaching idiots, you certainly have too much nerve and an abundant dose of your own idiocy.  Do you know each and every teacher in this county well enough to call us idiots?  Have you been in our classrooms to see what we are doing with these children that you also refer to as idiots?
    
As a product of Edgefield County, I can say with certainty that I was well prepared for the demands of an exceptionally large university setting.  As a matter of fact, I made the President's List each and every semester.  I give part of that credit to the education professionals who prepared me for it and the remainder to my family who helped me financially along the way.  Dedicating myself to educating others is a way to repay them all and to try to make a difference in my own way.
    
In regard to the students being idiots, you have no idea what you're saying.  I have some truly bright and dedicated students who do their absolute best to perform well on each and every assignment or task given to them.  Even the ones who don't make A's on all their tests can be kind and helpful and creative and mechanical and thoughtful.  If you think our students are idiots simply because they don't always perform well on tests, then your argument is more than rubbish; it's a proclamation of your ignorance.  My plumber is a genius, but I don't know how well he did on his SAT's.  The men who built my home possess skills and knowledge I can only dream of having, but I'm not sure how many of them even finished high school.  Do you "get it"?
   
 Not only that, the writer totally missed the point which is that if the state is grading the schools and nobody is doing well, then that's something to consider.  It's not an excuse.  It's simply an observation.  Thank you also, Mr. Editor, for realizing that we have quality teachers in this county and for supporting us in a number of ways.

My point exactly. There are some top notch teachers at JET and STHS; but they weren't products of the ECSD. They migrated here after receiving an education from somewhere else. It is rare that sorry elected school board members and incompetent administrators can lessen the effectiveness of a good teacher. They can make their jobs harder to achieve. However, sorry school board members and incompetent admins can enable poorly trained and ineffective teachers to become sorry educators and dead wood.

This post is for the situation describing the grades of schools and relating it with the grades of tests. If a test is given and all the grades are 'C's, 'D's, and 'F's; it does not necessarily mean that something was wrong with the test or teacher. One can only assume a normal distribution of test scores/school grades if the population being tested/scored has inteliigence/aptitude normally distributed over the population.

First, let's look at the test scenario. At STHS, they emote about the Millineum Club. This means that the test taker scored 1000 or higher on the SAT. With a norm referenced test like the SAT, 1000 should be the average. 1000 is an AVERAGE score. At STHS, when someone scores 1000 they hold them up on a pedestal and throw flowers on the person. Well, they love to emote over Mediocrity at STHS. It's the best mediocre school in the state. So, the point is that STHS or JET is not dealing with a population that has normally dsitributed intelligence/aptitude/smarts. So as is the tradition in Edgefield County, we should be thrilled at the C rating for JET because it is mediocre and that's what Edgefield County is all about.

Now, let's look at the test scenario. Grades don't necessarily tell if a test is a good diagnostic tool or not. If the students don't prepare themselves for a test, you could have the best written test, and still have all 'C's,'D's, and 'F's. In a Utopian test taking environment, the grades should be approximately normally distributed. However, Edgefield County is not very Utopian, so good teachers can give excellently
written tests and the idiots who take them could just be unprepared, uncaring idiots, like 80-90% of the
student body at STHS, and they will not have grades that are approximately normally distributed.

The point is that your argument is rubbish. Stop trying to make the educational system of Edgefield County look better than it really is. The problem with the ECSD, is that it recruits to many faculty members
who went through the ECSD and so it has idiots teaching idiots.

If a teacher gives a test and eight students make C's, twenty-three make D's, and seven make F's, does that seem acceptable?  Most of us would say that something is wrong with the teacher or the test.
    
If you look on the inside front cover of JET's school report card, you'll see that no middle schools "like ours" were classified as excellent (A) and none were classified as good (B).  Only eight were classified as average (C).  JET was right there with the majority of others in the next category.
   
 If you look at only the ratings each school receives, you will have a distorted perspective.  Look at the "grades" the state is assigning to other schools "like ours."  It will give you a much clearer picture of what is actually going on.

I read about the motorcycle wreck on Woodlawn (Rd). We live on Garrett Rd and the same bikers fly up and down our road all weekend. One got killed not too long ago when he wrecked by the bridge. When is something going to be done about them? I know the Sheriff is short handed and all, but (darn), it's not like everyone doesn't know about them flying up and down the roads all weekend.

Since the excuse “You obviously have no idea what is involved or how results are measured.” Is the standard response maybe it is time to explain the processes and not just spin doctor the results.

Why does it take so long to get the results back? The kids are tested in April and it takes 7 months to tally the results? The state of Georgia has their test results back by mid summer. If I want to move my child to another school the year is already 4 months over. Does this carry over to the next year?

As a teacher and a parent I would ask that the community of Ridge Spring think long and hard about a “Charter School”.  The concept is wonderful but in actuality they fall short of their expectations.  Fox Creek is a great example.   Statistics used on the news services which were obtained through channels from the South Carolina Department of Education shows how Fox creek is actually hurting the scores of our county.  I would recommend that The RS-M community find a candidate for the Aiken County School Board next election.  Wagner has a state of the act Elementary and Middle School. Ridge Spring-Monetta is in a 50 plus year old facility that needs to be updated or torn down.  The candidate that Ridge Spring-Monetta needs wears a green and gold shirt everyday to work.

Here's one way at least one town is dealing with the baggy pants issue.
This was seen on Fox News Channel a couple of days ago. In an intereview with the town mayor of Pine Lawn, Missouri he said that the town was concerned with the image it was presenting to prospective new residents and businesses.  When he became mayor, they passed a law banning baggy pants.  The fine is $500 and/or jail time.  Mostly the parents are the ones fined or jailed for not being responsible for the way their children dress.  The charge against the youngsters is INDECENT EXPOSURE.  And in case anyone wants to cry RACIST, this town mayor is black! 

It was also reported that a town in Louisianna has instituted this same procedure and that Atlanta is considering a similiar measure.

Maybe the Edgefield County local towns ought to get together and consider doing something of this nature also.

Editor's post: Stories being followed for Tuesday: An Augusta radio station with a tower near Jacob McKie Road reported equipment at the site stolen just before 10 pm Sunday, an investigator was called to the scene. Thefts of metals continued over the weekend. A driver hit the fencing at the rear of STH on Par Drive late Sunday night dragging part of the fencing into the roadway. Early reports are no vehicle was found at the scene. Look for these stories and more on Tuesday.

She let me read it when I was 16  starting to get into trouble and again when my son was giving me troubles in his teens. I hope you enjoy it  I have found it true still today.

Congratulations to Johnston Elementary on having the highest overall rating on this years report card. While "average" may not sound like an accomplishment to many, these ratings are a sight better than below average and unsatisfactory ratings 2 of the other local elementary schools achieved. Hats off to Bridget Clark and her wonderful team of educators for doing such a wonderful job for the children! You will not find a harder working principal, vice principal and group of teachers in the county!  We lived out of town for several years and transferred in the beginning of last school year and I was blown away by the dedication of the faculty and staff and the level of education my children received. Great job everyone!

It all goes back to taking pride in a job well done no matter what you are paid.It goes back to just being thankful that someone gave you a job.I think it is so sad that our peach farmers must bring in people from Mexico to pick peaches. Kids used to scramble to the peach farms in the summer wanting a job. It was just as hot picking peaches and sorting peaches back then as it is today. What changed? Look at what your own kids do during the summer and you will know what changed. A lot of good freinds and memories were made back then. Kids learned how to work, appreciated the job and were respectful of other people. They saved their money for that first car or to go to college. Now the parents give them nice cars and take out loans for them to go to college. And then we wonder why they turn out to be the way they are?

The reason KFC/taco bell is not coming is probably because for some reason it is not benefiting (someone's) pockets. I would not be surprised to see Garys  not open either.
As for mayor Cambell and him wanting us residents to purchase new trash bins, I personally think he can go to hell. I am not paying for one. On our property taxes everyone in the county pays approximately $80 for garbage fee why cant the thing be bought from our tax dollars, god knows we pay enough. And if he cant find the funds for these trash bins maybe he should cut monies from other areas such as his overpriced salary or use the strretscape monies. Think about it the streetscape fund is to beautify our town, well then buy new bins so the old ones dont make the town look shabby.

I was just wondering what happened to the Taco Bell / KFC we were suppose to get in Edgefield??  Also when is the new Mexican resturant suppose to open in Edgefield, and The Gary's Hamburger in Johnston?  I also heard that when the Amoco is finished in Edgefield they  are going to close the Bryants up town and turn it into another Mexican Resturant.  The only reason I have so many questions I am sick and tired of not having anything good to eat in this county.

It's obvious he is paid or wants to be paid, because it's apparent he is disgruntled with volunteers. Maybe growing up and finding some professionalism whould be a goal for you. I am going to say this in the nicest way possible because I know what it is like to work in the customer service field. I went to (a store) in Edgefield the other day to return items that I had bought almost three weeks ago with a coupon. The people at the register could not figure out how to give me the amount that I had paid minus the coupon; so they had to take money off the original price of one item. Then the cashier wanted to give me a gift card because she put it in as my not having a receipt. Well, surprise I had my receipt. I said no I wanted my cash. She got a little huffy. Then if that was not enough, I got (a store) brand. On the aisle, it had a price for 5.89. It rang up for 6.49. The same lovely person was not going to give me the price of the product as it was advertised on the aisle. In fact, she refused to give it to me even after I showed her where it was on the aisle. I simply told her that true customer service is being fair about what you do. She had the nerve to tear the price off the counter in front of me. The next time someone leaves the dark-haired "rank supervisor" in charge at (a store), please make sure that she gets updated on her customer service skills because they are sadly lacking.

I enjoyed your editorial about Dr. Crenshaw leading our school district to a higher...lower level. Dr. Crenshaw obviously doesn't read the local papers nor has a true reading about her unwanted presence as school super.
It's obvious most of the living (not dead NAACP voters) residents do not want her here. She brought a legacy of low achievement to our school system thanks to the four NAACP buffoons on the School Board. If you
have not done your research into Vorhees College (Dr. Crenshaw's school) and its academic follies...do so.
As a former small college educator, many of my former underachieving students enrolled at Vorhees (rather
than finish with me) and eventually received their BA or MA. I am now convinced my horse could get a PhD
from Vorhees and become a school superintendent. Here is another thought.....in a recent Edgefield Advertiser article Dr. Crenshaw said she was going to involve some churches with the school. I'll bet one of
these churches will be Mt. Cannan (home to Prof. Bibbs, Sister Sallie & the NAACP). Don't forget Dr.
Brightharp is a high ranking member of the NAACP. They have no business in our school system and that is why we need to get rid of them all next election.  Amen

So I will get my facts right this time, it is the Alumni, coaches and other adults who are at fault here, they are living vicariously through the team. If you look at Lakeside and Greenbrier high schools, both teams are having problems because winning is everything.  I am glad to hear several players have a 3.0 or higher GPA and they are taking honors classes. I hope they are on the first string of the football team they deserve it.

First of all I am wondering whatever happened to that Williams fellow who was cuaght trying to meet up with a 14-yr-old girl via the internet a while back. I haven't heard anything more about that case.
Also, while asking a friend about the above-mentioned case, I was told that a man that works at a local day care has just recently admitted to molesting a little girl. However, I have read/heard nothing about this from anyone else and am hoping it is a rumor, for the girl's and the family's sake. Can you shed any light on these?

However, this so called cultural attire was first designed by prisoners who are interested in attracting other prisoners. You surely realize that educators are extremely limited in what they can do or say in terms of student behavior and dress.  Certainly, they cannot put their hands on a student, and they must be very carefuly about what they say.  As Judge Judy put it, "Childre are manipulative little beasts."  I do not disagree with your opinion about saggy pants at all.  However; blasting school personnel was wrong.  On a lighter note, I got the best laugh of my week last Thursday when I pulled up in front of (a local store) and saw the same thing you did, as a young man leaned into his car to retrieve something.  I'm 63 years old and had never seen that before.

Editor's post: I had to go to STH to pick up our child the other day. While standing in the office I got to watch a young man with his shorts hanging below his "boxers" and leaning over the counter using the phone. Teachers, administrators, and staff all saw what I saw. Not a one told this idiot to pull his pants up. Now, if he was in my home he would have been told once to pull up his pants and then I would have taken my pneumatic stapler and "secured" his pants where they needed to be in order to be presentable. That is from the rear. If I had to do the same from the front of the young man his hands would have been stapled to his crotch as he could not keep his hands off his "private parts" the whole time as he spoke to the young lady (also a student) at the counter.

Can anybody tell me the correct procedure to request county water in our area?  We have lived in this neighborhood for 21 years and still do not have county water or any services.  I have seen other areas (Martintown & Currytown Rd for one -  Sweetwater Rd for two) where old water lines have been replaced with new - and we are still waiting on our first set of pipes.    We pay plenty of taxes just like everybody else.  What do we have to do to get the county to advance our area - short of getting Ransford to adopt us?

On Monday night November the 19th, The Strom thurmond Basketball program will have it's annual "Meet the Rebels Night" at the Strom thurmond High school Gym. I do not trust the National Democrats as far as I could throw the tons of "crap" coming from their Presidential  Democratic candidates.  I did think the SC (and especially the Edgefield County) Democratic Party would be more above board.  Many of the people I know that are Democrats in Edgefield County are honest, God-fearing people.  However, the way the absentee ballots turned out and now with more and more votes being taken away from Shane Massey, I am wondering.  Also, Rep. Clyburn holding out and not conceding (which would have been a class act) and costing the taxpayers more tax  dollars makes we wonder if he and the higher-ups in the Democratic Party know something we don't.....Why aren't the absentee ballots being challenged, especially if there are signa- tures that don't match??

The production of Little Shop of Horrors at STHS was amazing!  The cast was phenomenal and the set was incredible!  Those of you who could not attend the performance truly missed out on an excellent show.  The cast consisted of extremely talented students!  All of their parents should be very proud.  Congratulations on a job well-done!

I just wanted to tell everyone how great the "little shop of horrors" play was. The students did amazing. My only complaint is the lack of seating. I went to the Sunday showing and had to sit in the back of the cafeteria with no speakers. My dad couldn't hear! it was a marvelous play and my family and i thoroughly enjoyed it! Laura was great!

The very talented cast and crew did outstanding jobs and it was obvious how much work went into this year's production. It seems to me there should be questions raised regarding Rainsford being named director for Economic Development of Edgefield County.  It appears the only development deemed worthy in benefiting this county directly or indirectly involves this development giant.  While he has generously given to the county, he also has benefited greatly.It appears only those things which fit his plans are moved forward. I guess the regular citizens' opinions do not count.  It also appears he has lost favor with some of his "imported, intelligent residents".  Maybe the tide is turning. The best way to do this is to get fresh new blood on the county council who will carefully consider each issue, what the public really wants and how it really affects the citizens of this county.  I for one plan to vote for fresh faces next election!

I know there have been concerns and real negative comments in the past about STHS Drama Department and the Director, Mr. Steve McKinney and his selections of plays. I did not always agree, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.  I want to share mine this year and let the community know that I went to the patrons show last night and think that this years STHS play, Little Shop of Horrors, was excellent.  The set was fantastic and the cast and crew made it a real enjoyable evening.  The young people really showed off their acting and singing talents this year.  I recommend to the entire community to get your tickets, if they are not sold out, and come enjoy this local production.  The entire cast are STHS students and the set and props are, again, the result of hard work from volunteer adults and parents in our community.  They are to be commended for their time and talents.

It’s good to be an American! I am so proud that Mr. John Rikard has again taken time out of his business schedule to honor our fallen soldiers. My three brothers was Military but only had two to go to war. My older brother (deceased now) was in the Vietnam War and received many injures that later on in life was a factor in his death, my second brother was in the Desert Storm War (ended up retiring from the Army) has a few scars but still kicking. My baby brother only made it to Okinawa Japan (has mental problems from going in at an early age). I can say that I’m truly grateful that their names are not on the list but I knew Jacob Mckie, Luther Walker, Jr., John Ready, III, and Alonzo Garrett. All the names on this list have proven that they were truly great American’s for putting their lives on the line for us. That’s why we’re sitting in comfort today because of dedicated men’s and I’m proud we’re honoring them today. We need to do this more often for those who gone and those that’s been there, and for those who still there.
Again, hats off to Mr. Rikard for a job well done in honoring the families of the lost!

I happen to know for a 100% fact that Mayor Durham buys "local" for his construction company!  He is always telling his employees as well as his family to buy local as much as possible.  And as far as him "owning half of the businesses in town", I believe if you did your homework that you would find that he is not half owner of very many businesses.  Sounds to me like you are a little jealous of him!  If you have never owned your own business, you would understand that there is a lot of stress involved with trying to keep the cash flow going.  Give the man a break!  He works very hard for the town and does not deserve the untruths that you are spreading.

Editor's post: I would like to see a "recount" of the only questionable votes that can be reviewed that could change the vote total, absentee ballots. With the addition of Democrat voters in the special election over the Republican run-off in Edgefield County, absentee voting increased 440%. Republican absentee voting actually decreased in the special election.

According to Edgefield County voting records, 1 of every 7 Democrat voters entered an absentee ballot. I say check them out. Confirm that every absentee ballot, Republican or Democrat, is verified as legitimate. I just have this strange feeling that will never happen.

I would also like to know your feelings on what you think Edgefield County Chairman Monroe Kneece said in the recording after the executive session. Do you think he admits a vote behind closed doors?

Edgefield County (without absentee ballots) went 57.5% for Massey and 42.5% for Clyburn. The absentee ballot count was 19.5% for Massey and 80.5% for Clyburn.  Something seems very strange here.  Does anyone have an explanation?  By the way, congratulations Shane!  We will be praying for you.

I’ve been thinking of adding on to my home. Where do I start? (Building dept. or Tax assessor) in order to get the Salley Cook property tax break. It would really be a big help to have my property taxes cut to  $80 per year. Do you know if this  tax break has a limit or is it perpetual? When I read the article on the "project tee" I just had to ask if the special tax thing was for Bettis (Rainsford) and his new golf course at Mt. Vintage? You do know his taxes come due this year after buying up all that property. Do you know if that is what "project tee" is?  That just sounds like a golf term to me. How can I find out if that is what this is?

Editor's note: Before the third reading of the ordinance (and a Public Hearing on the matter) can be held the County Council must reveal the identity of the business involved. Until then they can keep it a secret.

As a side bar, Bettis Rainsford was elected as the new chairman of the Economic Development Committee in Edgefield County last week. It would seem improper, and unlikely, that he gets elected to that position and then curries favor for a "fee in lieu of taxes" the next week with the County Council to avoid taxes.

Directions to Marlboro Cnty---

Take I-20 to Florence where you can merge onto I-95 North, then boogie on up to Exit 181, make a right onto four-lane Highway 38 then 23 miles to B'ville. At the first stoplight (McDonald's is on the left), make a right. Go straight thru two lights and start looking to the left for the stadium. (And, yes...it is behind a cotton gin and 'tween some cotton patches! ) Best bet is to pass by it on the four-lane, then make the first left you see and ease back to it along a local street.

Get out and support the Rebels for their first road playoff game in 5 yrs!!

To the poster asking about the trust fund set up for the family involved in the muder/suicide tragedy.....   may I offer this advice?

In 1998 our home was hit by 2 of the tornados that came down Garrett Rd.  Our home was 80% destroyed and we had to move into an apartment in N. Augusta for nine months while we rebulit.  During that time, there were several trust funds set up - not only for us -but for others who suffered damage.  To make this long story shorter - this is what we learned from being on the "receiving end" of that situation....   even in the best of situation, when good people have the best of intentions, things can go wrong.  Our church set up a fund - and there were people all over the area who heard about our home being destroyed.  Many of those people knew us - from my husband's work - from our church - from our school associations.  They were told to contribute to our local church and they would make sure we got the money.  After six months - we still had not gotten anything.  Finally some church friends called to find out why - turned out that  #1 -the money was divided between any and all families who had any sort of damage - no matter how little -- there was a committee appointed to decide who got how much money and when - ....turned out that #2 - because it was funneled through the church - they had to report the money to the government who added that to our annual income and took their part of it before we could get anything.....   in the end - after almost a year, we were given a check from that fund for $52.00.  Thank God above - not everyone listened to what they were told to do.  We had so many good people who did not leave it up to somebody else to decide who, when and where they would be allowed to help.  There were folks who showed up on our doorstep with food - and clothes and yes, cash in hand.  We received checks in the mail along with heartfelt notes of encouragement.  I don't want to discourage anyone from doing good in whatever way you feel is right ... I don't want to discourage anyone from giving through your church.  But we learned that from that day forward - when we want to help somebody - we write a check and mail it to their home address - or show up on the doorstep with cash in hand - even if it is only $5.00.   Nobody knows what that family needs better than they do - and whatever it is - I'm sure they need it now - not a year from now.  Just something to think about.

I saw on the television where there has been a trust fund set up for the family involving the murder suicide.  My buddy and I have thought about making a donation however, we would kind of like a little more information.  Is there anyway you can find out who the money will benefit and who is in charge of what it will be used for?  I've seen these accounts set up before for those who suffer a tragedy, but nowadays you just don't know if something is on the level or if those that you think you are helping ever really benefit.  Thank you for any information you may be able to provide on this matter.

Inquiring minds want to know:  1. Why does every County Line rebuttal contain the words “I’m not a member of the department?  If you are not a member of the department, then how can you proclaim to be a concerned citizen and hide behind a computer screen and defend something that you have no first hand knowledge of, only what you have so called been told.    2. Why hasn’t there been a rebuttal made about the Letter to the Editor from the “not a member of the department”.  How can one live in a community all your life and not want what is best for the community and be clouded with political socialism and see how many boards we can get on.  How can one claim to be a “Volunteer” (a person who performs a service willingly and without pay; to offer oneself for some service or undertaking), but not be in it for the right reason, self personal gain nor self recognition doesn’t constitute the right reasons.  As one stated before, what do the “Volunteers” do for the community:  Where were they during fire prevention week?  All other departments were out in the community, and guess what; to everyone’s surprise those men and women have jobs and families as well, so that excuse doesn’t cut it in my book.  How does having a yard sale benefit the community, is the money going out in the community?  Can’t say it is going to the first responder vehicle that poor ole thing hadn’t seen sun light in a month on Sundays; the new Service truck is making those calls now.  It was said in the beginning, the Service truck WOULD NOT be used for first responder calls, guess the powers to be changed their minds real quick, when they had to get people to come onboard their express train.  If you want to make a note worthy rebuttal do some research, actual get involved and prove the allegations to be invalid and then all this about your perfect County Line will all go away.

I applaud the students or others who write and say "that The principal at STHS is a fair man". However, it takes more than a fair man or woman to run a school effectively. Yes, he is probably the heaviest cheerleader that STHS has ever had, but does that mean that the school is achieving at a high level. People point at the SAT scores from the senior class last year and say "yes". That was a measurement of probably 15-25 students. What about the other 170-180 gradutes of 2007? What are they doing? How many are in jail?
How many are on welfare of Food Stamps? How many have a job? How many are worthy citizens?

Someone ask the principal how many classes he has observed this year? Ask both assistant principals how
many classes they have observed and how they have improved instruction for any teacher? The
administration has basically stopped doing anything of real substance. Teachers are required to call parents
when they are written up for discipline infractions. Teachers should not have to waste valuable preparation
time sitting on telephones, calling wrong and disconnected phone numbers. The community should demand more. As I mentioned before, it takes more than fair man to run a school, it takes someone who is
competent and willing to get up off there butt to make a difference.

I got an email you might want to alert your readers to.  It came from Carolina Bank saying my account had been frozen.  They wanted me to click open a form and fill it out so they could unfreeze my account assests.  If I didn't within a certain time frame they said they would delete my account.  The scare tactic was if you don't fill out the form you are going to loose your money.  I don't know of any Carolina Bank and there was no address or telephone number to call.  Talked to Carolina First, my bank, and (name removed) said we don't email customers for that kind of information.  
 
I figure if I had opened the file I would have been spamed and/or virused or if stupid enough to give them any account info they would have hit my account.  This was pretty sleazy but the hope is that you will be so worried about losing money you open it just to see what is going on.

Why is it that Salley Cooks can add on to her House 3 or 4 years ago and from that point on is only billed $80 per year? AS smart as she is supposed to be even she should know that is not correct. I just wanted to give a comment out to the County Line Fire Dept. It seems as if someone is writing negative comments about them.....I've Lived in the community for about 12 years now and I was a member of that department years ago. I dont understand why the firefighters that got kicked off the dept dont just join a neighboring dept...There are plenty of areas to serve and volunteer if thats what they really want....Im sure if they were removed from the dept for no wrong doing, any of the neighboring depts would have no problem putting them to work and utilizing all of the experience that they have....So instead of writing a bunch of negative things about the dept...go and join another dept and fulfill the desire to serve the community you live in and put all experience and training to work. My brother has a radio that listens to Edgefield County ambulance, police and fire. He told me something the other day that really bothered me. He told me that Edgefield County ambulance only runs two ambulances for the whole county and that almost everyday, a couple times a day one of these ambulances are taken out of the county to take patients from edgefield county hospital to other hospitals as far as Lexington and augusta. I believe there are non-911 ambulances that specialize in these types of transports. . Doesn’t it kind of make our county and it’s citizens vulnerable when the ambulance is to busy taking patients from ECH to other hospitals when indeed there are ambulances that are not dedicated to 911 that are willing to take them. Also it was brought to my attention that a lot of times dispatch has to contact off duty ambulance drivers to come in because both ambulances are busy. This making the time it takes them to get there very long. What would happen if the ambulance was taking a person with a cold from ECH to Lexington and someone’s heart stopped. The 911 ambulance was needlessly taken out of the county and this person dies because dispatch had to call off-duty ambulance drivers to come in all because ECH is to incompetent to treat patients.

Ok... I’m a student at STHS. I'm involved with many extracurricular activities and I feel that it is not only an insult to Mr. Thompson and the administrators when ST is put down but it is also an insult to the students.
-Mr. Thompson is honest AND fair. Anyone who tells you otherwise obviously has never sat down and had a conversation with him. He will be the first to tell you he does not judge on race or gender. He treats every student the same, with RESPECT! On the note of administrators and "high officials" dealing with the schools why aren’t ya'll freaking about our new superintendent? FIRED from the past two districts AND test scores dropped? Why the HECK would we hire her?

-As for the "spirit" at the football games.... it is kind of hard for the cheerleaders to get the crowd "pumped up" when none of the fans pay attention to them. If you want to talk crap about the cheerleaders... do it! But I challenge you to come to a cheerleading practice and participate in everything they have to do. Not only do they have to run laps, lift girls in the air, memorize about 30 cheers, and learn about 7 dances... they also have to uphold a 3.0 GPA, and they are "representatives" for ST when in and out of uniform.  So talk crap, but just think what they are going through next time you want to say they just "stand around looking at each other"

-O and ST has had ONE prom for the past 4 years, I’m sorry some people are just to ignorant to do some research before posting some idiotic comment about FC having one prom insinuating that ST had 2. By the way I do have friends at FC so I’m not trying to put it down, just letting you know the facts!

Fox Creek has created its own nightmare.  Stop taking your frustrations out on your Coaching Staff.  They can only build a team on the foundation they are provided with.  How can you expect a team to perform on the field when the Hemorrhoids in the stands are trying to be Monday morning coaches?  I know, you guys go to college get a degree in education, take some coaching courses. Coach for a few years then you will be qualified to make your unfounded claims.  This phony school was ill conceived and poorly planed from its conception.  It is a representation of most of the Charter School.  A minority of parent in an area get the idea they can run a school more effective than the county at large. They get the State to pass a law based on emotion not on common since and that phony school falls far short of those parents expectations   Fox Creek sits in a Casino.   The only people that ever mention high school in the southern part of our county were real estate agents, so they could sell more homes.   I do believe we need a REAL high school in the southern part of our county, but Fox Creek will never be it.  The school needs to be planned, not thrown together in a casino and a fire works stand.

State Law does state that carrying a weapon on school property, i.e. pocket knife with a blade over 2 inches, is ILLEGAL.  3. Yes, a student dispersing tylenol is fine, but prescription pain killers is ILLEGAL...get your facts straight.  4. The State of SC says a child must attend school until 17 years of age.  The school is the guardian and caretaker of this child from their doorstep, to school, and back....do you want your child leaving and not know where he/she is?  Before you start "rumors", how 'bout get your facts straight so you don't sound like an idiot.  Mr. Thompson is a good person and tries to do his job, but people like you run good people away!

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN

Now that we have received our tax bills it is time to start the appeals process.  The economic state of housing has taken a noticeable downturn.  With houses and property not selling or selling for considerable less than Edgefield County’s Tax Assessor guessed numbers over a year ago – all property values should be reduced.  Using the “basis” applied in the last appraisals every property in Edgefield County would be decreased with every appeal.  Of course, since the Tax Assessor was allowed by the Council, Administrator and Appeals Board to change her basis for every piece of property this probably would not happen.  However, if the citizens of Edgefield want to show the Council, Tax Assessor, County Administrator and Appeals Board Members who they are responsible and accountable to -  all citizens of Edgefield County should appeal the property assessments just received.  By the way, how many appeals are still open and did the County ever provide the number of properties and dollars reduced from the original assessment?

Editor's note: I think the last of the appeals were heard within the week of mailing the new tax bills, some that increased. How is anybody's guess since the reassessment is already over.

My heart is saddened by the murders of Mrs. Arangilin and her daughter Jade and Mr. Herring's suicide in Edgefield this week.  My thoughts and prayers go out to both families and, especially, to all of the children involved.  Their lives have forever been changed by this terrrible event.  It really matters not why Mrs. Arangilan didn't take his name nor why her children had different fathers.  What is truly important is that somehow circumstances were such that a man felt that his only solution was to kill his wife and step-daughter as they were sleeping and turn the gun on himself.  That is tragic.

I am disgusted with the situations going on with the churches (African American) in Edgefield County. What is wrong with our faith that we have to bring law enforcement into our church affairs. Who are WE to say who is right or what is right? We have mirrors in our homes, cars, churches, and on the our jobs. We are afraid to look into them because we don't want to see who and what we really are.
 
Let us remove the envy, jealousy and just plain old hatefulness from our hearts. Believe it or not, we will be held responsible for the destruction of the church we call home if this continues. The church does not belong to man. Let us uplift the church: not tare it down. No one can trespass in Gods' house. The church is for worshipping not fighting, togetherness, not division. A law enforcement officer should only be on church property when he/she is there for service. We must not think so highly of ourselves that we stand in judgment of others. We must be very careful of how we treat our fellow man/woman. We should protect our brothers/sisters reputation as if it was our very own. Let us get ourselves in order; then we can get our church in order. Servants, humble yourselves.

We were shocked when we read about the murders in Edgefield. That just doesn't happen here anymore. The more we read the more confused we get. How many "fathers" are there in this family? How many kids are there and who do they belong to? Why does the mother have a different name than the husband? I know that may sound stupid, but it sounds like there are a bunch of people involved in all of this.

Editor's Note: The best information I have is the wife, Leslie Arangilan, had three, if not four children from two different fathers. Robert Herring had at least two, if not three children. The couple married in Edgefield County. I have no idea why she never took his name after the marriage. There are at least three famillies involved in the matter at this point.

This is in response to the ongoing animosity that is continuing to be created by keeping the unfortunate incident involving a Edgefield County deputy and the lady that was struck in the stands at the football game.  The fact is that this should have been a private matter where a citizen felt like they were inappropriately treated by a Edgefield County Sheriff’s deputy; however the incident was made public with only the self proclaimed victim’s perception of the incident.  The complaint should have been made to the Sheriff’s Office and they should have been giving a chance to rectify the unfortunate incident.  I have dealt with the different law enforcement agencies in the CSRA and I can say without a doubt that the deputies with the Edgefield County Sheriff’s office cares more about their citizens than they get credit for by the public. Give them a chance to look at the incident and make their apologies, they at least deserve the opportunity. To the person that made the remark that they are rude bullies, “Give me a break! That is so far from the truth!!” To the remark “Our taxes pay their salaries,” Please! Those deputies are so underpaid it is not even funny and they still do their jobs because they want to make a positive difference. That department handling a lot more request for service calls then other departments the same size, so the citizens should be lobbying in support of the Sheriff’s Office with the County Council and Administrator and focus on the enormous number of positive things they do, because we are great at putting a spot light on one unfortunate incident.

Well, the perfect football season is finally over of FCHS.  My hat is off to all the players who had to endure another year of an ineffective coach.  I saw in the paper where Schneider said that they only had six seniors and that the team was turning the corner.  The returning players better carry good insurance if the coach claims they are turning a corner.  With that coach at the wheel the bus will run off a cliff !!  (Or maybe x rocket screen WILL work next year.)

I was wondering if the county was charging the owner of the "yellow" tow truck a storage fee that is parked up at CountyLine Fire Department. If not I have a couple vehicles I need to store. Anyone have an idea who I need to contact to get the same setup?

I know it's parked there because the owner is out on a call. NOT! You got to come up with something better than that. I got a "new" scanner and I haven't heard CountyLine's tones dropped that many times and we all know the owner doesn't go to every call. The "free" advertisement and the "free" storage space should stop.

I read in amazement the comments from Mr. Thompson, the principal of STHS, concerning the board meeting over the recent drug action at the school. I was very shocked as he said that stems and leaves were not a state violation, so they didn't take action. Every parent in the district needs to cut this article out and keep it for further reference. The state does not say that one cannot carry a pocket knife, but the district does. Is this fair? The state does not say that one cannot disperse Tylenol or other meds, but the district does. One child is in Alternative School now for this. Is this fair? The state doesn't say a child can't leave school, but the district does. Is this fair? Mr. Thompson seems to have been given a dose of the Edgefield County "good ole' boy" medication. Just a few short thoughts before I begin with an issue that troubles me in Edgefield County.
Edgefield Daily Rocks!! Please remember the families who suffered such a great loss this week in Edgefield in your prayers and thoughts.
I want to address an issue that might shock some of you in Edgefield. Did you know that child molesters are walking around with not a worry in the world due to the lack of arrests that are made? I am appalled to learn that a molester who fails a lie detector test is still able to go free and live as if they have done nothing wrong. I do not understand why this is allowed to go on in our county. When is a small child the one who should live in fear due to a demented person? We should do more to see that these people are taken off our streets so they can't harm any other children. Our police department should investigate these crimes more thoroughly to insure that our children are protected. When our police department receives information that surrounds molestation no stone should be left unturned.  They should start by questioning all other children who have been in contact with the suspect. If they have failed a lie detector test; please keep going until you have enough to lock this person up for good! We must do more than sit on our thumbs when innocents are involved. I know lie detectors findings are not permitted in court, but if someone fails one we must keep investigating until we have enough evidence to convict! These are our precious children and they deserve better!

Recently I was visiting in Edgefield and my sister and I made a visit to Horn Creek Baptist Church.  I am very active and interested in the preservation of old Family Cemeteries.  I was so amazed at this church and the cemetery.  It is a beautiful Historical part of Edgefield.  I was so up set to fine that the Graves had been vandilized and many of the beautiful grave stones have been destroyed.   This church and graveyard should be preserved.  The church can be treated and preserved with special preservation specialists.  Please if your city and county care about your hertitage and history have the Historical Society in Edgefield request a grant to preserve this church and please have the tomb stones placed back where they should go.   Maybe you can suggest that the town spend a Saturday at the church cleaning up the Cemetery treating the area so no more weeds will grow around the graves.

I'm getting a little tired of seeing everyone get so defensive over the Edgefield County deputy who rammed the woman in her back at the football game! To start with, all law enforcement know that when giving a desription of a suspect, race is definitely a factor in it. In fact, if you go back and read the post the lady put the word LARGE in capitals to emphasize that part of the description! His color had nothing to do with how much weight hit her. If this deputy was sitting next to steps he chose not to take, he either doesn't have the good judgement a deputy should have or he was grandstanding! We have a big problem in Edgefield County law enforcement with this "I'm the law. my way or no way attitude!" We used to have a few officers who put the public first, but now we have arrogant, rude bullies! This woman deserves an apology from the officer and the sheriff. All police officers in this county should remember they work for us!! Our taxes pay thier salaries. Thier job is to protect and serve and not run down innocent bystanders in the process. The sad part of this whole thing is it would only take an apology from these two men and the lady would be satisfied and everyone could drop the subject. Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen, though. This will probably only cause a bunch more posts in defense coming from other people connected with law enforcement!

Editor's note: The Sheriff nor the deputy can offer an apology to the person if they do not contact them. Working very closely with our law enforcement officers I can attest that they have the public's safety first in their priorities. I have witnessed situations where they have maintained a courteous and professional tone with people I would have been far more stern.

In response to mill worker. You show me where we can purchase goods made here for the price of overseas companies. You can't afford it. And some of the goods coming from there are just as good if not better than ours. It's not just Wal-Mart. Check the fancy store like Bonwits, Lord and Taylor etc, just about everything there is from overseas, but in those store they are over priced. You shop at Bi-Lo?? They are a Dutch company, and so is Food Lion, who is owned by a foreign country. Does that mean we should boycott them?

As I stated before and forever will, I do appreciate everything all "Volunteers" do for our community. I also understand that volunteers have jobs and families. I fully understand after every call, at the end of each week nobody is handing out any pay checks. But here are some more things I know. A true "volunteer" does not want a pay check for what they do. They do it because they want to give back to their community, their not in it for self gain and they manage their volunteer/family time. Long hours are second nature to a volunteer in the fire/medical field. Rain, cold and heat should never be a factor.

As for "I must say that I have not noted any difference in the fire department since the departure of the "firefighters", (A) either you are not really looking or (B) you are either a member or (C) a family member. I can put on a pair of blinders and think I see a rainbow but is it really there? You can put all the new, "BLING" "BLING" fire trucks you want into CountyLine, that doesn't change what's wrong with CountyLine ! Back when the "firefighter" were there people saw someone at the station, the "firefighters" got out into the community. You ride by now and the place looks like no one has been around for months. Sorry until the first on the month, then they come by and clean up for the board meeting. That's if they don't "change" the date.

The last item I know is you speak out about the post in Wandering Minds, but nobody ever tried to say anything against the "Letter to the Editor Former Fireman takes County Line Chief to task"? Big puzzle on that one. Like my mother always said, "be careful what ya wish for, you just might get it"!

CountyLine, wrong is wrong and all the "Bling" Bling" in the world will NEVER change that.

The Holiday Season is just a little bit down the road and the bad guys are already trying to get free stuff by using your credit.This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want.
 
Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself. One of our employees was called on Wednesday from "VISA", and I was called on Thursday from "Master Card".
 
The scam works like this: Person calling says, "This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in Arizona?"  When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?"
 
You say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1-800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800 -VISA) and ask for Security.
 
You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?" Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, "I need to verify you are in possession of your card." He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers." There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers' that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you
sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, "That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?" After you say, "No," the caller then thanks you and states, "Don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up.
 
You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.
 
Long story - short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master card directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card!  If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.
 
What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a "Jason Richardson of Master Card" with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening.
 
Please pass this on to all your family and friends. By informing each other, we protect each other.

On Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday ( Only one game on Wednesday ) evening, November 12, 13 & 14Th, All Teams from Edgefield county youth Football league ( Teams and cheerleaders ages 6-12 ) will be traveling to either Lions field or North Augusta High school to play a game against a team from North Augusta Parks & recreation.  Each team will be matched up against an oponnent that has a similar record or an equal corresponding finish in its league. Example : 1st place vs. 1st Place.  2nd vs. 2nd., ect., ect.. This is called the Black and Blue bowl and If all goes as scheduled, the games will be played in our county next year at a site to be determined. At one time, we all played in North Augusta and this will give all of our teams a chance to have fun and enjoy a game of football against our closest neighbors and one time rivals. This fun and exiting week will close out our season this year and we encourage all to come out and support our  Edgefield county youth in this event. T-Shirts for this event are on sale at Bettis Park for $10.00 during next weeks playoffs. The games in North Augusta will start at 6:00 and there will be a small admission fee.

To the person that said "HUH" about Wal-Mart.  They closed down Greenwood Mills,  Standard Textile in Augusta, probably Star Fibers in Edgefield, Kendall in Edgefield, the list can go on and on. My company told me I was loosing my job because it was sent to China. When I used to have a job at Greenwood Mills we were encouraged to buy at WAL-MART because they were 100% "buy American".  The next time you go to Wal-Mart check out your labels.  I support big business, but keep the big business "HERE" not in Japan, China, Korea, Mexico, etc.  Think about the people in this country.

In defense and great appreciation to County Line Fire Department..

Please understand that these ladies and gentlemen  are VOLUNTEERS which means they do have full time jobs and families.  It should be appreciated that these people respond from their families and warm beds at night to help out with NO PAY.  They do this out of sheer valor and desire to help.  I must say that I have not noted any difference in the fire department since the departure of the "firefighters".  I believe they are still a good department and willing to help at whatever the cost.  I am not a member of the department, but I do come in contact with these honorable people quite often and appreciate them greatly! So THANKS to the County Line Fire Department and all other volunteers and emergency responders who respond to danger when all others flee.  Thanks for your dedication.

I would like to make a comminte on the person who is complaining about the deputy running into him do you not understand that these deputy"s are under paid and are called on to do many things while you are sleeping in your bed unaware of what they have to do and the many diffrent calls they have to answer i to was once a police officer and took 4 bullets in the line of duty so the next time u complain please realize that their is alot more that goes on than these officers running into to some one and i am sure he didn"t even realize he did it because he was trying to get to where he thought he was needed right then to prevent something worse that might have happen.

EMS is not a free service.  It actually takes money to run a business and yes, EMS is a business.  If there was no "response" fee then people would call all the time for band-aids and free check ups..and literally get them for free!  And then one day your family would really need them and they would be to busy wrapping someones "boo-boo" to respond right away.  So the "response" fee, I am sure, is just to keep people from misusing the service.  No one wants to pay 91 bucks for a band-aid!  And the person who stated,  "Well she didn't get out of the hospital, (Lexington) until 2am! the hospital called the ambulance just to transport her back. We received a bill for $ 576.94!!!! and this was only a 9 mile drive"....Well she was transported...get over it. Nothing is free! Call a taxi next time.

OK, let me explain this one more time, and I promise for the last time, because obviously you don’t get it. Let me start by a story that happens all too often. A police officer is responding to a call, he, speeds to the location with no lights or siren so you don’t see or hear him, because it may be life or death. As he is responding the car is traveling at a high rate of speed. In the meanwhile, your daughter is on this same road as the police officer, who is still traveling at a high rate of speed, so he approaches fast and in stealth, giving her no warning to move to the right. As he goes around he clips her car, but it was just a bump and he didn’t mean to, but it causes the car to roll over seriously injuring your daughter. Now, is it right that she was injured because someone else was in what "could have been" a life threatening situation? Of course not, then why is it OK for an officer to go "running carelessly through a crowd of people, knocking one of them over, injuring them because someone MIGHT be in trouble. BTW, the call he was speeding to was cancelled, just like the one last Friday, he stopped at the bottom of the bleachers. The point was he never made an attempt to come back, he had time. As for calling him white, it wasn’t racist, just a descriptive term, do you hear the police say look for a large white male or a large male? Get over it, I’m white for goodness sake, now go on back to PC land and go to sleep. I haven’t called the Sheriff, yet, I think he has his plate full at the moment instead we should be in prayer for the Herring and Arangilan families.

I hope this can be received as postive and not negitive. I would like all readers to take a minute of your time and pray in unity on one accord for our children and our communities. The wars are among us now, it maybe mentally, physically, or even emotionally, but whatever it maybe it's praying time. Pray for the ones responsing to the crime scenes and the families involved, not just today, but from now on. Please try and make a difference in someone life today, it can be a smile, kind word, or even a pat on the back. Sometime you have to go thur a situation to understand it, but I pray none of us have to deal with a tragedy of any kind. My prayer is that we all stay together as one, pray together as one, and live together as one. Let's start to be a solution, and not the problem. May God continue to bless us all today and always. I have been reading with great interest the facts that are coming from the tragedies in So. Calif with regards to the wildfires. Coupled with the lessons learned from the unsatisfactory response of the state and local government during Katrina, I TRULY HOPE OUR COUNTY ADMINSITRATOR and COUNCIL LEADERSHIP are watching closely also.  The lesson is that readiness, competence, and proper FUNDING of our county first responders is our first line of defense for our community in a major tragedy. For instances like the Graniteville chemical spill when the crisis is the “only game in town” it’s easy for other communities to help.  However, when the scope is of the magnitude of Katrina / Wildfires and the entire state is stressed, only your own assets may be available for a long time.  My point is that the first role of government is to do those things collectively which individuals cannot do for themselves (Police, Fire, Roads, etc)…not recreation.  FEMA is not a first responder, it never was designed that way so don'r rely on the Feds.  When I read about the monies being spent on Recreation Dept (Govt responsibility??), and I think about our drought (and fire danger), proximity to nuclear plants, etc….I’m wondering if our County Leadership truly appreciates the magnitude of their responsibilities for the safety of our community.  They’ll be hell to pay if they don’t and a major crisis comes knocking on our door.
