To the "silent days" supporters..... Should parents that disagree have to file a letter that they can ignore? That's dumb as (heck).

I read where you said that you support "freedom of speech". What if that "speech" if offensive? You don't allow people to curse in the wandering minds, so aren't you being a hypocrit?

Editor's note: No, EdgefieldDaily.com is a private company, not a government entity. No one has a "right" to have their views published without their names attached, it is something I allow.  Everyone is allowed to voice their opinions within the confines of the rules. There have been many comments posted over the years that I disagree with and that I personally find "offensive", but they were within the rules and they were published.

If I am so unfair
or a "hypocrite", as you say, try getting any of the comments published in the Wandering Minds listed in the local papers without your name attached and get back to me.

I am getting sick and tired of hearing uneducated, uninformed people knocking the editor of Edgefielddaily. He is one of the most honest, unbiased people I've heard in years. To those who can't handle hearing the truth, we'd rather not hear your idiotic rantings! Leve him alone!

Editor's note: Thank you for your kind words, but it is important that all people and viewpoints be heard. Those who disagree me personally are well within their right to do so. I have a thick skin, unlike most liberals who take everything personal. I am tolerant of opposing views, they are not.

I would like to ask everyone to include my brother-in-law, (name removed), in your prayers, please (God know who he is)? His mother passed away last week and he had a massive heart attack 2 days ago. He is in University Hospital ICU and we are awaiting the outcome. We are all gratefull for all the friends and relatives who have been there to check on him. Please keep him in your thoughts.

Youre a racist admit it!!! You keep trying to say that President (elect) Obama is from Africa. You keep saying it over and over but it  dont be true and you know it. Nobdoy else talks about it. That proves you are a racist.

Editor's note: MSNBC (left of CBS and CNN) has reported the lawsuits. Black magazine "Essence" has also interviewed Allen Keys (I'm pretty sure he is black and the people from Essence are black). But somehow when I point it out, because I am white, I'm a racist. I just don't understand that mentality. It is the same thought process that says if a white did not vote for Sen. Obama they are racist, but when almost 99% of blacks voted for Sen. Obama they are not racist for not voting for a white candidate. I find a real problem in your math.

I stand on ideology and political beliefs, not color. Of the tickets that could have won for the GOP. Condi Rice (black) and Gov. Palin (white) in any order. Others that could top the ticket: Ron Paul (white), Walter Williams (black), Mitt Romney (white), Mike Huckabee (white). The best ticket? Herman Cain (black) and Sarah Palin (white). Both solid conservatives. I'd pick Hermain Cain as Pres. and Palin as VP over any of the Washington insiders that Obama has put back in office. Take your best shot at my picks being "racist".

The person who complained about DSS, the rudeness, and blatant disregard for people who are not of certain ethnic backgrouonds is rampant in the loacl DSS offices. I too am white and requested assistance for a gas voucher so I could drive to a job interview only to have my request ignored. I just didnt receive a response at all. I lost my job, they stated their job developer would contact me, instead, I receive an email telling me to try the unemployment office. As if I hadn't ALREADY  been there. There is a poster in the DSS office with a number to call if you feel you have been discriminated against, my suggestion to the person  that was treated so rudley is to call that number, then let Senator Massey know exactly how you have been treated.  its time DSS was investigated for discriminatory practices and the unwillingness to help people not of certain minority backgrounds The most glaring concern is,when will our elected officials step up and DO something about this agency?

Re: Editor's note: Why not ask for my bank account numbers too

So you say that you are a big time small business person contributing by paying your ever increasing small business tax burden, and you employ others; however, you will not say how many you employ, their employment status (whether you pay withholding taxes), or if you provide these workers with health insurance. You emote about your vast wacko knowledge and ability to analyze, but you will not list your credentials, any education you received past high school, or whether you actually do employ anyone (that you actually pay a salary). Then you expect us to believe the trash that you publish. You say your facts come from financial institutions and other media sources; but the only ones you cite are WorldDailyNet.com, Off The Wall, and most recenlty The Drudge Report. Why should anyone believe you? I read because it's the best fiction on the market. No other public forum has a better storyteller than you. You should really submit your works for the many literary awards in fiction that exist. You might even win the BFE Best Literary Fiction Award for the most imaginative and deluded writing.

Editor's note: I take it you have a problem with WorldNetDaily.com which would imply that you are a far left liberal (they hate WorldNetDaily.com). They are not cited as a basis for our news other than an "Off the Wall" story here and there. Just about every major news outlet has also been listed in this section so I am not sure what you are trying to prove.

I have never stated I am a "big time small business person". My business arrangements with staff writers and contributors is none of your business, or anyone else's for that matter. It would be illegal for me to list how much I pay for writers anyway. I'm sure with your vast knowledge you knew that already.

If you can disprove a single news story published by EdgefieldDaily.com as factually inaccurate I will make a donation to your favorite charity, retract the story, and give you credit. You can't and won't.

Thank you for reading.

one reader suggested "silent days" at sporting events. I'm not sure about football, but NA has silent days during basketball season, you can clap and say good job but thats about it. it is a nice change.

Editor's note: I am not taking sides, but I am a strong supporter of the 1st Amendment to our Constitution assuring freedom of speech. I am not very comfortable with a government body telling anyone what they can or cannot say.

Why the (heck) are other people making money off OUR conssession stand at Bettis (Park)? WE paid BIG BUCKS for it! Basketball loses money and football makes money so why arent' we running OUR conssession stand at the football games? Who is and where does the money go? It sure ain't going to support the Rec program. What idiot let this happen?

I read the letter that Nick Wates sent in and it states that trophies are included in the registration fee that we paid at the beginning of the season. My daughter cheered this season and I was asked for twenty dollars for a banquet and a trophy at the end of the year. Why was this? I refused to pay the twenty and my daughter didn’t receive a trophy. Was she entitled to a trophy from the sixty dollars I paid at the beginning of the year?

It seems to me that someone is not watching the money for the county.   Do we not have a County Administrator  that is suppose to be watching all of the pennies for the county?
You grown ups need to get a life.  Let the kids play, do not live out your want a be life through your kids.
web posted November 27, 2008

I was wondering why the town has decided to do Christmas trees and lights before Thanksgiving.  It is bad enough that the retailers start trying to get every penney they can before Halloween, but now even the town gets in on it.  The parade is after Thanksgiving, why couldn't they do the tree lighting then?  I noticed that the town does observe Thanksgiving by taking that day and the day after off.  I enjoy Christmas also, but I believe we are losing the meaning of Christmas(having to rush through lighting an 11 thousand dollar Christmas Tree).  Children used to say "I can't wait till Christmas"  now they don't have to, now it is just one big advertising gimmick for retailers to get more sales.
Maybe everyone would not skip Thanksgiving if they could find more ways to commercialize it.  Oh well, just my thoughts.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I have just read many posts on Wandering Minds.  I moved from Edgefield rather reluctantly 22 years ago.  I always regard Edgefield as my home eventhough I have no physical ties there. With that said, I am dismayed at the outlook of many people about a recreation game.

In my newest hometown, I am a coach, program coordinator, parent, certified assignor, and referee.  I was not a sports fanatic growing up. I did not cheer, I actually hated football and all sporting events.  Now I am getting to the point that my outlook is different.  My outlook is one of major dismay.  We are not teaching our children to play a sport anymore or about sportsmanship.  The parents are teaching the children to disrespect the officials, and the coaches are trying to pass the blame onto the officials.

I have been given kudos as a coach because we do not call the referees names, I actually have thrown my players parents out for disrespect.  I talk to the parents before I officiate a game. I am not a "rabbit ears" but I do inform them that these are still kids and we need to remember to encourage.  This would eliminate the issues that you all are discussing.  In my county, we have what we call "silent" days. During those games you are not allowed to yell at all.  You can clap and if a goal is scored you can say good job but no negative yelling or coaching from the parents.  Maybe this would be a good option in Edgefield.

Make me proud Edgefield.
web posted November 26, 2008

Thank you for reporting on the recreation department and pointing out the money that is being wasted. What I want to know is where the money is going.  Why are the other papers scared to dig into the program? Thank you for not being a scardy cat!!

To everyone fussing about the Christmas tree in Edgefield I spoke to (someone invovled) and the lift machine costs $1,500 a day to decorate the old tree so the tree will pay for itself in a matter of two or three years.

Editor's note: Not true. According to Edgefield Public Works Director David Coleman the lift you speak of costs a few hundred dollars a week. I do not begrudge the town of Edgefield for their new tree, but let's keep the costs involved accurate.

No, I do not want to be Scrooge.  However, I believe it is time for a reminder for the County Council and the employees of Edgefield County.
Yearly Bonuses versus Christmas “Gifts”.  Absolutely no need for both.
I propose Yearly Bonuses be eliminated.
I also propose that the Council (county taxpayers) decide if Christmas Gifts for county employees be continued and what that Gift will be.  Equal (the same for all) should be the rule if Gifts are given.
$10  $25  $50   pick one we can afford and give to all employees.
It is time to start reminding ourselves and the Council what is right and affordable.
Maybe we should start a weekly reminder to the Council and the county taxpayers why we voted for “new blood” on the Council?
Happy Holidays.

Editor's note: County employees do not get two benefits at Christmas.

Re: "Although history shows the election of a Democrat President has a negative impact on the stock market, never in history has one had such a devastating impact as the election of Barack Obama."

You gotta link to support this?

Here's a slew of them that refute it

Editor's note: Yes I do, but why dig into mine when it is much more telling to use yours. Setting aside obviously biased left leaning "blogs" listed in the search, the only "news" source in the first listings (USA Today) contained in your list states the following: "When a Democrat wins, stocks have lost 1%, while rising 4% if a Republican wins, Bespoke Investment Group says."

And we all know USA Today is a "right-wing" media outlet just like MSNBC and CBS.

In your recent opinion article : Obama's next chant..."No we can't" the public has realized that you are not an Obama fan. That is good because we all are entitled to our opinions but why is it you are the only one who has an opinion. Why don't you allow the public to express themselves as you do. You need better tactics if you are trying to sway people to your side.

A faithful reader

Editor's note: Thank you for reading. I have always made the standing offer that anyone who wishes to publish a rebuttal will be allowed at least double the space (word count or otherwise) to refute any opinion on EdgefieldDaily.com. I do not know how I can be more fair to opposing viewpoints than that. The liberal side never takes me up on the offer and just makes baseless attacks rather than support their views. I encourage all sides to make their case to the reading public. Do not blame me because the liberal side does not wish to engage in a debate of facts.
web posted November 25, 2008

Why don't you just admit that you hate Obama? Stop trying to sound like you are not biased in your opinions.

Editor's note:  An opinion, by nature, is just that - an opinion. How can an opinion be expressed and not appear "biased"? Opinions are biased. Reporting of the news is not. If you have a problem with a news story being biased, then you have a legitimate complaint though none have ever been raised and supported.

Football Season has come and Gone For our Strom Thurmond Football Team and we would like to take this opportunity to Thank the Coach's and Players and all Involved for yet another very successful and enjoyable season. As one of the Central Parents told me after Friday night's game, this is " The best atmosphere they have ever experienced for a High School Football Game ". They commented on how well our Team and community showed a lot of character and class. The Atheletic Booster club would also like to thank all who purchased Chicken dinners this Saturday morning or Just donated ( Thank you Mr. Jolly/Edgefield food & convienience ) for our purpose of raising funds to help offset rising costs of operating a sports program. Also thanks to those who came out in 17 deg. Cold at 6:00am to cook and prepare ( You know who you are ). I have noticed that every time somebody writes to Wandering minds and an Invitation is extended to " Join" the Atheletic booster club, nothing more is said , or there are no more comments. You want to keep unwanted people out of your yard, or place of business, Just put up the words Join, help or " Volunteer " and that will scare em away !  Folks, this is easy and enjoyable. No heavy lifting, long boring hours, just a little time given here and there goes a long way. You have read " the same ten people" , well that’s up from the "same eight people".  Basketball has started, Wrestling is actually getting underway, Baseball is real close as well as Softball, Track, ect. And we still need some help from Parents or just people with a passion for whichever particular sport they support. Come on out, Monday night Dec. 8th at 7:30 , upstairs in the concession bldg. at the Baseball Complex and help us plan the spring season. We will vote for new officers this spring and would gladly accept new input and participation.  It's going to be a good spring for the Rebels sports teams and the way I see it, " Spring Football " is just a few short months away. Thank you Mr. Editor for your support, and avenue for us promote our events & channell our needs , comments and requests.  Happy Thanksgiving, Merry CHRISTmas & Go Rebels !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Obama's next "No we can't"

Yea, look at the market since the transition team leaked the new Treasury Sec name. Please list your Bona Fides for analyzing the future economic conditions. Where exactly did you get your economics training? Please list somewhere besides WorldNet.com. You sound like a conspiracy theorist to me. Too bad your conspiracies are so radical right, that I'll wait to see what happens before adopting your fatalist view. You still seem to be able to publish your rhetoric with no troubles. The Big 3 should follow the models of the "southern" car companies. The only problem with your logic is that the car mfg companies in the south are relatively new and don't have any pension liabilities to worry about yet. However, they came to existence in the times of Defined Contribution Plans as where the Big 3 started pension programs when Defined Benefit plans were still in existence. No matter what happens, jobs will be lost, pensions will be lost, lives will be ruined, and we will all feel their pain. It seems as though your fabled Christian believes should kick in when commenting on the hardships of others. But like most of what you publish, your Christianity is just window dressing.

Editor's note: Just for the record, you sound uneducated to me... I have never sourced WorldNetDaily.com (at least get the web site name right) for any opinion. I base my information on credible sources including, but not limited to, financial banking sites, nonpartisan reviews, government reports, subscribed business sites, and from personal experience as a business owner.

What business do you own and please explain how you are so knowledgeable about the facts of business ownership and how that ownership affects the economy.

To further show how "off base" you are, the "Southern" auto makers are excelling because they are not controlled by unions. Union controlled auto makers need a bailout, non-union auto makers do not.

Explain that if you dare.

Re: To use the argument that the residences of Edgefield don't pay city taxes is a farce.

"Franchise Fee 5.00% paid to the Town of Edgefield"

Every citizen of Edgefield pays a city tax of 5% of your electric bills every month. If the statement above is on your bill (the fee can range from 3-5%) then you pay this tax to the municipality in which you live. This franchise fee is negotiated by town officials and gives the electric company exclusive rights to provide electric and gas services to the municipality. The electric utility does not keep a penny. They collect it for the municipality and it is then pays it to the municipality in full.

Re: Editor's letter: "Obama's next chant, "No we can't"

It is amazing how you blame the pres-elect for the country's problems when he hasn't even spent a day in office. Natural gas prices have fallen and the local untility (not Aiken Coop) has dropped prices 15% since Obama was elected. The cost of energy has gone up from the price of coal skyrocketing out of control. Over 50% of electricity is generated in coal fire plants and the world wide demand for coal has gone through the roof. Coal prices have increased by 30-40% per ton. Just because you choose to live in BFE and have no say over who provides your electricity, you should not blame Obama for your personal problems. Get a real job and make some real money like the rest of us hardworking Americans and may be then you'll stop blaming the new Admin for all your personal problems.

Editor's note: It is amazing how you want to discount the opinion without addressing the issues contained within. I not only have a "real job" but I provide "real jobs" to others. I take it that you work for someone like me who provides (owns) your job and you obviously have no idea what it costs to provide you with the job a business owner, like myself, offers to others.

I bet you voted for Obama and have no clue what it takes to run a business since you are an employee, not a business owner, and are not affected by his anti-business tax schemes. I just wonder if you actually pay taxes or get a "refund" above and beyond the money you pay into the system. Of course, you are not aware that the employer (the person owning the business and your job) pays to make your job possible. If you worked for me, you'd be the first on the "cutting block" to make paying Obama's proposed taxes possible. I bet your employer will feel the same way.

I am proud to have grown up in Edgefield County in an era where Christian faith was first in my life. Knowing right from wrong was a given. I never dreamed that people of faith would be physically attacked and made fun of. I believe that young children still have that same opportunity in this County. Preachers in this community are starting to condemn homosexuality  regularly. There are some leaders in our Government that would like to see Churches lose their tax free status if ministers condemn such. I suppose one would be Barny Frank. Why would same sex couples want to adopt a child that choose a lifestyle that would prohibit them from having a child? Praise the lord that people are speaking out against this filth.

Good local football is over, I hope everyone had a good cry and pity party. Now maybe we can get down to the real reason kids go to school, to learn. How can we get the Edgefield county School system on track? Mrs Crenshaw is not helping we know that. Who has the power to change things? I think an audit would get the money issues out in the open. I support my child's teacher 100 percent and would like to know why the superintendent makes so money.    Is this why we are having budget cuts where people are truly needed. It is time Mrs Crenshaw took a large pay cut.   As a Parent sometimes when I go in with a question/problem to my child's school it takes persistence to get the issue solved. This sounds like the same type of problem, we are all going to have to keep at the school board until they make a major change.

I am the proud parent of a teenager that worked as a Dixie Youth umpire. At age 16 he took the course and passed the certification test for Dixie Youth. t I went to see him in action at work, just as I saw him play for over 10 years. Sitting in the stands hearing adults call my child names was not fun, but it was not taken personnally and didn't affect my childs job performance at all. He had coaches that tried to tell him off because of his youth and he stood his ground with dignity and respect. He is in college now, attending The Citadel and I couldn't be any more proud of the young man that sports played in shaping him.-along with God, and family. The point is, refs  if you can't take the heat, fiind another profession, people are going to disagree, I have never seen a game(rec league, HS,college or pro) that someone didn't complain about officiating.  ( see-the " ? rod gardner push off against USC) parents, don't make a mountain out of a molehill,. I'm sure each person played a part in the altercation, who made more if it I dont know, but what kind of example does this set for our kids? Is this how you would want your child to act in the same situation? Do you want him to grow up always blaming someone else for a loss or anything else that didn't go their way? I hope this is the last thing I see posted about the event. Dragging it on and replaying who said what to whom does nothing but stir animosity and that isn't why they are suppose to play the GAME.  Go Tigers beat the cocks!

I have an old cast iron tea kettle that has rusted inside. I would like to use it on top of a wood heater for hot water. Does anyone know how I would keep it from rusting more? I know that you can season skillets with oil but I don't want oily water. Any ideas?

Editor's note: Growing up with cast iron cookware, this is - to the best of my memory - what my parents and grandparents advised. Pour equal amounts of salt and oil into the middle of the pan. Scrub the pan with a strong cloth (or steel wool) concentrating on the rusted spots but covering all surfaces with the oil and salt mixture. Add more salt or oil as needed. Wash and let dry before using. You might want to re-cure the pan by wiping it with veg. oil and cooking it at 275 degrees for two hours. Wipe the pan or pot down again inside every 30 mins. Avoid using Dawn or other harsh detergents (and dishwashers) to clean cast iron. Wash cast iron by hand with hot water. Detergents will remove the oil from the pots and result in rusting. This should not give water from the tea pot an "oily taste" if done properly.

I am getting sick of being told that we have an "African-American" president. I fought in Korea and Nam with black, white, and asian men and we were all Americans. "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all... The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic... There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else." - Teddy Roosevelt. If Obama is the "African-American" president, where does that leave the rest of us?

RE: "After research of the Terri Program and Terri employees 'on the way out' it becomes obvious why they have a sour attitude."

Who is fooling who?  If Dr Crenshaw and her staff (Sandra Friar) had really researched the situation they would know there is a shortage of well trained, highly qualified teachers and that is the reason the TERI program was instituted by the SC legislators to start with.  And the retiree portion of these teachers' income is paid by the state from money the teachers have paid into retirement and not by the school district, so the district is only paying for years of experience and education.  You may replace them with "exciting, fresh" young teachers but they will lack the education and experience of the seasoned teachers.   Most parents want well trained, experienced teachers for their children.

And speaking of "killer incomes", let's look at Dr. Crenshaw's.  She is the highest paid superintendent in the history of Edgefield County (by a significant margin) and it is not because she is better educated or more highly qualified than our previous superintendent.  Why does she begrudge teachers, who have dedicated their lives to public education, the opportunity to make a little more money their last few years?  The highest paid of the lot will work harder and make far less than Crenshaw!

Finally, don't talk about who is interested in making AYP!  Our district has been in a steady decline since Dr. Crenshaw came on Board!

I have always had a concern about Edgefield’s policy of requiring residence to bag our leaves before the city will depose of them.   It is an environmental concern, placing a bag of leaves in a land fell takes
up space and the plastic just set there and keeps the leaves from decomposing.  This week I witness the sanitation department pick up some leave bags.  They picked the bags up and dumped the leaves  into the back of the sanitation truck.  Then they threw the bags away.   Thanks again for wasting the residence of Edgefield money; those bags are about .25 a piece.     Please I wish our local government has some common sense.

To use the argument that the residences of Edgefield don’t pay city taxes is a farce.  The money received from the Federal Government, because the Minimal Security Facility suddenly became a maximum security facility doesn’t give our local government a blank check to waste money on an item we might only use a short while.   In good times a government should plan for the bad times, and it bad times be should be frugal.  I still pay town taxes every time I use my lights and use this computer.

A town government should spend it money local.  We have people in our community that support them self in the Christmas Tree Business.  The town purchasing an Artificial Tree is a slap in their face.

Re:  "After research of the Terri Program and Terri employees ‘on the way out’ it becomes obvious why they have a sour attitude. "

Since I didn't understand what was causing all of the sourness, I researched the South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS)  and the Teacher and Employee Retirement Incentive program (TERI).  The link I used is http://www.retirement.sc.gov/teri/default.htm.  The purpose of this program is to retain experienced state employees who would otherwise retire.  Teachers are not the only state employees el igible for the TERI program.  As I reflected on the writer's presentation of his "research" that was sprinkled with the images of gluttony, rape, and killers, I felt that some rebuttals were necessary.

1.  "These Terri retirees draw retirement checks; get pay checks on the scale of experience and degrees and Terri savings to draw. Did they attend a conference with the “gluttonous” people on Wall Street to learn the trick of “raping” clean the district just as Wall Street has “raped” this country? The best explanation heard about rehired Terri retirees is a way of “Making a killer of an income.” No wonder they are upset at losing “Killer of a incomes”! "

I saw nothing stating that the TERI retirees draw both retirement checks and pay checks.  An active member of the SCRS can "retire" without terminating employment for up to 60 months u nder the TERI program.  This employee is eligible for a certain monthly retirement benefit based on years of service and contributions. However, this monthly retirement benefit must be put into a non-interest bearing TERI account on a tax-deferred basis.  Once the TERI employee stops working, the TERI account is paid out as a taxable, lump sum distribution, or as a tax-deferred rollover into a qualified retirement plan. Any distribution paid directly to the TERI retiree is subject to federal and state income taxes and, possibly, a 10 percent federal penalty for early withdrawal.  TERI employees are required t o continue to contribute to their retirement plan; however, the additional years do not count as service for retirement. Most employees are generally paid a salary based on their experience and education.  Why should a TERI employee be any different?

2. "Districts not rehiring retirees are fine and are making progress."
Which school districts?  Apparently, the State of South Carolina saw the need to retain experienced teachers; otherwise, the TERI program wouldn't exist.
Progress?  South Carolina still ranks near the bottom in education.

3. " Message of “parents wake up” should be “Parents wake up to having teachers with a sour attitude and throwing “mud” teaching your children. Are they here for the “killer of an income” or progress? They could care less about making AYP; and could leave on their own free will and have an income. When they signed this Program they knew they would be “at will employees” but counted on the “good old boy” management to keep them. Teachers and staff not in the retiree category will not have that security."

The only sour attitude I see is the writer's; the only mud throwing by the writer.  The majority of the teachers I know are concerned about the education of our children.  My children are not compIaining of teachers having sour attitudes; however, they are aware that teachers are very concerned about the budget cuts.  What does AYP really mean relative to the quality of education my children receive?  What I see is that AYP has thrown a monkey wrench into the education system, not just locally, but nationwide.

Yes, the TERI employee could retire and draw his/her monthly retirement check; however, that amount is about half of the normal paycheck.  A hard adjustment if one has not properly planned for retirement, so the five additional years of income could help provide some security.  Some employees may choose the TERI program because they truly enjoy working.

With the impending budget cuts, all ESCD employees should be concerned about their job security.  Most employees facing layoffs are not going to be very happy about losing their jobs.

4.  Fresh, exciting, and innovated personnel changes with other highly qualified and certified people waiting in the wings for job advancement; and fresh, motivated, new teachers is what Edgefield needs to improve failing schools. Look at the low performance of schools then, GO FIGURE!!!!!! Who is working towards improvement? Obviously Dr. Crenshaw and her staff have researched it all and to her, outstanding job!

Where are these people?  I find it hard to believe that "highly qualified and certified people" are just beating down the doors to come work for ECSD.  Are the "fresh, exciting and innovative" personnel going to work in that advanced job for their current salary or less?  With the budget cuts, I can't see paying for all these promotions.  The failing schools are not the fault of the teachers, but of the administration and the school board.  Our school board has rivaled the Augusta County Commission or Coliseum Authority in making bad decisions by splitting along racial lines.  The fiasco surrounding the hiring of a new superintendent was embarrassing.  Many well-qualified teachers and administrators have left this school district over the last four years as a resul t of actions by the school board and administration.  I see no evidence that Dr. Crenshaw and her staff are working towards improvement, other than to "attend a conference with the “gluttonous” people on Wall Street to learn the trick of “raping” clean the district" and "making a killer of an income."  I can only hope that she didn't provide you with the "research."

First of all, I am not a man.  I am a LADY!!  A child getting hurt by a refs’ neglect has absolutely nothing to do with Sour Grapes.  A loss is a loss if the loss is to the football team and not the “officials”.  I have no problem with one team losing, but lose fair.  There were many actions that were unfairly not called.  Kudos to the teenagers who have volunteered their time to participate in recreation sports as flag holders.  I commend them, except that he should have dropped the pole when the kid was running toward him.  If there is a grudge between a ref and a spectator, then maybe the ref should not be refereeing if he can’t be fair.  There is always going to be poison spewed at the refs from either side, but blatant disregard for the rules or for misconduct is not acceptable.

By the way, I stated “I have been to recreational ballgames in North Augusta (which has a much nicer facility) and I don’t have to pay to get in.  I don’t even pay taxes there.”  I never said that I went to any football game at Lions field.  I have been to MANY baseball games at Riverview Park and NEVER had to pay to get in.  Also, I could not sneak in.  I am not that small.

As for volunteering, I volunteer my time to get a child back and forth to practice and the games.  I never ask for gas money or payment.  I do it out of the goodness of my heart because I think it is very important for children to be involved in something that they love.  Happy Wandering!!!!

Regarding all the drama about the championship rings for the football players, are you people seriously fighting this? Those boys bust their butts all season do this for themselves, their school, and their community and you want to deny them the one acknowledgement that they can get and deserve? I watched my brother drag himself through practices and games over and over to win that championship game a few years ago, I also watched those boys sit there and cry over acheiving this goal in their lives. From someone who attended Strom Thurmond and to this day still despises the place, I think they at least owe one good dead a year. Let the boys enjoy this and stop acting as if you are younger than they are. How can any of you possibly whine about this when you will let the town rightfully spend 11,000 dollars on some stupid tree???? I mean really. I bet if those boys tattooed "Property of Rainsford" of their foreheads the rings would be paid for!!!
web posted November 22, 2008

OK, I agree.  $11,000 is a lot of money to spend…on a Christmas tree…in this wonderful economy we are in the midst of.  However, spending $11,000 on a Christmas tree for the town might not seem such a bad idea if you really think about it.  Are they going to throw this tree away at the end of the 2008 Christmas season? I sure hope not.  I would guess we could get at least 10 years or more of use out of this tree.  If you do the math, that amounts to $1100 a year.  Now, if this tree brings just 50 people into town who, in turn, spend $20 a person in our local stores and restaurants, doesn't that almost pay for the cost of the tree?  These local stores and restaurants are the ones who buy business licenses and generate revenue for the town.  The visitors to our Christmas tree and these stores go back home and tell their friends and neighbors, "The town of Edgefield has a beautiful Christmas tree.  You should take a ride over there and see it."  So, before you just think $11,000 is a lot for a Christmas tree, take a few courses in economics, marketing and accounting.  Then you'll know the difference between an expense and a capital investment.

For all that are making assumptions about what was or wasn't said to the referee during the Falcons/Broncos game, you are making ASSUMPTIONS. I was between the parents and the field all night long and no threats were made. If a referee can't take someone calling them blind, one-sided or dumb then they need to find something else to do. If you pay the money to go see the BRAVES play and the umpire makes a bad call your telling me I can't hackle the umpire? I have been to several little league, semi pro, pro sporting events and never ever seen referees act like they do in Edgefield County.

PS why didn't Edgefield County have an ambulance at the game/games? Better yet, why didn't County Line Fire Department have a First Responder Unit at the games?  Thanks to all the parents, off duty EMS, nurses and bad apples for taking care of injured players this year.

About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to lose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage."

Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul,  Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the 2000  Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29
Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2  Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds:  "In aggregate, the map of the territory Republicans won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country.

Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare... Olson believes the  United States  is now somewhere between the 'complacency and apathy' phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the 'governmental dependency' phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegal's and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

I hear Dr. Crenshaw is planning an out of district trip to attend a black educators' conference.  Excuse me, but what's wrong with this picture?  I thought unnecessary travel had been eliminated because of financial woes.  And why do black educators need to meet separately from white educators?  If white educators wanted to have a white educators' conference it would be considered racist.  Why is this different?  If the school system is integrated and the goal is to provide quality education to all students, why do black educators need to hold a segregated conference?  Parents, and especially board members, need to ask questions about this.  If Dr. Crenshaw feels she has to go to this conference, she should be required to take vacation time and pick up her own tab for travel, registration, food and lodging.  This is an inappropriate expenditure for taxpayers' dollars.

I am the "elderly gentleman" who was asked to leave the recreational area at Bettis Academy Wednesday night. I did question a "non called infraction" by the head official of the football game. I have been involved with athletics since my early days as a player , coach , and official on the little league , high school , and college level . I have been fortunate enough to participate as a player in three separate World Series events . I have never seen an official react in such and unprofessional manner with so little provocation. I did vocally admonish the official for ,in my opion , missing the call. After the official turned his attention away from the game and stared at me , I did refer to that official as having "rabbit ears" , which is common terminology for any official who doesn't have thick skin and doesn't pay more attention to the game than the stands. I strongly feel that this official's reaction was totally unwarranted and unjustified . This official did not exhibit the type of  judgment and character that Edgefield County deserves and that needs to be shown to our young people in today's times . I believe that it is time we stand up for the good things going on in the school district. Despite the poor attendance, Miss Statesman was a wondeful event. The school sponsor was well organized and the stage was beautiful. The contestants were graceful and elegant. It was refreshing to see such a positive event.

I also believe that the recent drama production should be applauded. "High School Musical" was a success. Mr. McKinney and his staff are to commended. It is sad to hear the rumors that the district will get rid of him when he makes his 30 years.

We should also be more excited about the Rebel Regiment's 4th place finish in the state marching band contest. This is the best that the band has ever done.

I get somewhat discouraged with Dr. Crenshaw when she can have time to "can" workers, but she can't  take time to attend events where students are being taught real life experiences. Where was she for Miss Statesman? Where was she for the state band Contest? But, I bet she''ll be at the State Football finals in Clemson because she would not want to miss such a photogenic moment if we win. And please don't say she can't possibly attend everything. Dear Editor,
My wife and I traveled 40 miles to Edgefield Wednesday night to see our nephew play for the first time this year. His team was playing for the league championship after beating the league favorite the night before.
Having been involved in recreational league atheletics with my son for many years, I must say the atmosphere, supervision and operation of the game was the worst I have every seen. The anomosity between the officials and coaches was so thick you feel it. The grandfather that was thrown out of the complex said nothing of consequence and infact a young guy made the comment that was blamed on the older guy. To think that five deputies were wasted for all of about 20 white people on the Broncos side lines is ridiculous. Most were at least my 53 years and older. We couldn't riot if we wanted to.
As my wife, an RN, was trying to assist the youngster with the broken collarbone, she was told by one of the officials "that boy ain't hurt". She quickly informed him otherwise. The Director seemed oblivious to all of this. Someone needs to take a long look at the overall operation of this department before there is some real trouble....

I am a Bettis Academy Falcons parent.  We were all sorry when the Merriwether Broncos player got hurt last night; they were playing their hearts out.  There may have been some bad calls. I guarantee you it has happened to all the teams at one point or another during the season.  The poles should have been dropped, but that was an accident, and certainly not a vindictive act on the part of the volunteers.  Those boys do so much for the recreation department sports; I don’t know many people, let alone teenagers, who would volunteer as much of their time as they do.

I know emotions were running high when the child was injured, but we are supposed to be teaching teamwork, discipline, healthy outlets, and good sportsmanship.  Our coaches prayed for our boys, the Broncos boys, the coaches, and the officials before the game last night. Our children are all friends and neighbors – we should be also. We can’t accomplish anything positive with accusations and outbursts.  We can always use volunteers to help in the concession stand or on the field moving the marker poles if you have extra energy - that would be a great example for our children.

None of these teams are too shabby and are confident they can beat STHS. If you do make it, and early congrats if you do, the atheletic dept along with the booster club should buy the rings. This is the approach of most school districts in the area. The kids deserve them and should not have to pay for them.

11,000 on  an artificial Christmas Tree.  We have quite a few Christmas tree farms in our area,  An artificial one is  a waist of our MONEY.  it is a time for a change in our local government, Our community waist 35,000 on our Square and now $11,000 on a tree and decorations.

Editor's note: Mayor Durham told me Thursday he was mistaken on the cost of the tree (but not the total dollar amount of all fixtures). The cost of the tree was $6,800, not $9,000, however the total cost of all things purchased was $11,000.
web posted November 21, 2008

I would just like to say that although the Christmas tree is big and nice, it probably is not worth 11,000 dollars.  Between the remodeling of the square and the tree there has been approximately 50,000 dollars spent just on town square.  What about the rest of town.  There is trash everywhere and if you don't live on main street, town employees don't pick it up.  You do or it dosen't get done!  Maybe someone should take notes from North Augusta.  Look at how they keep the whole town maintained.  They spend money to beautify all of it not just one section.  We all pay taxes and would enjoy spending money in and on Edgefield if they would concentrate on all of us.

Does the Board of Trustees of Edgefield County Hospital know how smart they are?  They have made an excellent choice in making Pat Robinson interim CEO.  About every two or three years the Hospital goes through a period of confusion with a new administrator.  This transition is usually hard on staff and the hospital and does not promote growth.  We are growing and Pat knows what our patients need, how our physicians work, and what the staff can do to help this growth continue.

The best of times was when Bob Welsh was our administrator.  Why was that?  He was one of us; he cared for the hospital, the patients, the physicians and the employees.  Why can't we have that again? Pat is also one of us and has the experience, knowledge and ability to work with the staff and physicians for the good of the hospital.  This employee hopes the Board of Trustees continue to be smart and Monday give Pat the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of everyone in Edgefield by permanently making her CEO of Edgefield County Hospital.

I sure hope that the response time to the house fire for the paid Merriwether fireman was not hindered by this fireman answering a call in the CountyLine district.  Is CountyLine going to reimburse Merriweather for the use of their paid firemen?  What is it going to take for the Merriwether taxpayers to stand up and say that enough is enough?  Is it going to take a Merriweather vehicle being wrecked or something bad happen in Merriwether district while they are answering calls for CountyLine?

Wow, what an event on Wednesday night at Bettis Park.  Missed calls by the ref, an elderly gentleman thrown out of the park, and one kid hurt.   The main ref missed many calls, but the one that stands out the most is one player was clipped and had a HUGE mark (knot) on his back, but no penalty was called.  An elderly gentleman was calmly stating his dissatisfaction with one of the refs, and he was escorted to his car by a sheriff’s deputy.  Other deputies were called to the park.  I guess the “director” (term used lightly) was scared that the ref’s feelings would get too hurt.  One kid was hurt by a marker pole (held by an inexperienced teenager).   The teenager that was holding the pole should have been instructed to drop the pole when kids are running toward the sideline.  I guess the teenager was too busy socializing to pay attention to the game.

Why do we have to pay to get into a recreational ballgame?  I have been to recreational ballgames in North Augusta (which has a much nicer facility) and I don’t have to pay to get in.  I don’t even pay taxes there.    Where is that money going?  Is that public record????  Go figure…

I know that we pay the “director” (used lightly again) a pretty penny to “do” (term used lightly) his job.  I certainly hope that our tax money does not go toward paying for the football pads and helmets.  I saw the “director” just throwing the equipment around like it was trash.  Imagine that…

Well…that’s all I have to say about that (right now anyway)!!

She has been having meetings at all the schools explaining the budgets. First of all, she is very rude and heartless. She could have explained the situation in a more compassionate way. She said all of us were replaceable. She needs to be replaced. Second question. Why are we having a budget cut anyway. Crenshaw says it is because the state is cutting back on the money. What is wrong with our politicians? Don't they realize how important education is? They need to be replaced too. Goodbye.

I already have to use the generic brand of this medicine which doesn't work as well, but now they want to stop it all together. I guess they would rather pay for me to be in the hospital than for the medicine. Again, insurance companies practicing medicine. A pharmacist-who knows nothing about me dictating to the doctor that knows everything about my case what he can and cannot prescribe. If something isn't done to stop this more and more doctors will continue to leave private practice. Lives WILL BE lost due to negligence on the part of the insurance companies.

RE: "Who approved the money needed to build the new school??"

I am a Merriwether resident and my child attends STHS. We made that hard choice because we along with many others in our area were told  that what we thought didn't matter.  They didn't care if we had to take a choice between sending our child on two, one and a half hour  rides to school on the bus and getting there sometimes just barely on time and oftentimes late or paying $50.00 a month to get our child to school on time. I was all for another school closer to home. Driving a half an hour for after school activities and meetings, especially when the price of gas was up has been a burden that has
been difficult to bare.  The reason we chose STHS was because we found that FCCHS was not yet up to the standards that we were hoping for and decided we need to make that sacrifice.  We have a younger child and we were very much hoping that FCCHS would over time improve.  It sickens me to see those that wish for the demise of something that could bring and enormous burden off those in our
area.  I for one hope FCCHS manages to turn things around and I pray for their success.

However, fuel costs are now below 2005 levels and there has yet to be any rate reduction. I just want to know if Aiken Electric Co-op is going to provide some “lube” as its customers are bending over and taking this windfall profit raping right up the you know what.

Turn out in force in the next election of board members and send every one of the board members possible home and let them pay the high bills they imposed on everyone else. Maybe I should run for one of the seats. I just know they would love to have me there explaining the reality of the regular household that has to deal with having to pay bills day in and day out.

Then again, they probably wouldn't. They might raise our rates to campaign against me to keep me off because I might tell everyone about the expensive trips, gifts, and “extras” those sitting on the board get to do the “Co-op's” bidding. I think Sher sang a song about them… Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves.

According to public records, the property was donated as a Colored Community Center in 1956 by the Edgefield County School Board in exchange for $1, as long as it was maintained by a non-profit entity. A minority based American Legion and VFW out of Aiken County are supposed to be the current deed holders, but neither hold credentials as a non-profit 501(3)c, Chief Carter said."

OK, so I'm a bit offended here by it being donated as a "Colored Community Center".  What color?  Red, white, purple, green, black?  Do we really have to guess?

Neither the VFW out of Aiken nor the American Legion have credentials as a non-profit 501(3)c, so who has been renting out the center?  Who has been collecting the money?  Who has the electric and water in their name and who is paying the bill for these?  The Edgefield County School Board maybe?  The people who are strapped for cash?  I'm afraid the more you dig the more horse puckies you're going to dig up!

Re: Governor Sanford's opinion article

It always amazes me when Governor Sanford talks about tightening SC's belt. When Mark Sanford was elected governor his first term, his gratitude to his top campaign people and fundraisers was overwhelming. It was so overwhelming that he decided to "give back something" to these cronies. Here's what he did. He created a new Deputy Director/Executive Compensation position in most of the state agencies for these persons or their wives, or their aunts, or their children. Now there are close to 60 state agencies. The pay grade for these new positions is $98,000+ per year. Gov Sanford added over $6 miilion dollars in new salaries with the stroke of a pen. This wouldn't be so bad, but all of these positions already had a Program Manager II or III doing the same exact jobs. So now we are paying two people to do the same exact job, with the same exact responsibilities. Sanford could have used those funds, which are a huge waste, to pay for the costs of the Federal IDs or the unfunded mandate of the Minimum Wage requirements. Mark is campaigning hard for a federal job, once his term is over as governor.

Dear Mr. Editor,
Who approved the money needed to build the new school??   If Edgefield County School System is having problems with funding our district now, why do we need a new school?  It should be that we go back to the way it used to be.  We should have one high school for the county until we can afford a new school.
Fox Creek is nothing but a private school being funded with state money.
I feel confidant that our board did not approve.

Editor's note: The ECBOE did approve when they voted to extend the charter school's charter even though they had more violation than they had achieved goals. You can thank outgoing BOE member Scott Chitty and Cooks and Crew for that.

However, the money approved for the new school building is from a USDA Rural low interest loan. The school cannot pay it's current bills, so it will go broke trying to pay off the $5.3 million debt. They think they can build the school and then force the ECBOE to take it over, but that is not the case. The FCCHS BOE will have to suck up the debt. This will be the second government funded empty building on the obscure roadway.

To the Parents of Edgefield County's Public School Students:

What is it going to take for you to wake up and get involved in what's going on in our district?  Dr. Crenshaw and Company have announced that our active retirees, those who have the most teaching experience and are some of the most respected personnel in our district, will no longer have jobs.  She has also indicated that some of those positions will not even be replaced.  This means that other teachers will have to absorb the overflow, which means significantly larger class sizes.  So, stop worrying about first-year teachers instructing your children.  Worry about not enough teachers!  When it comes to educating your children, this is not acceptable.  Not only that, Strom Thurmond and JET will both lose the people who really run the schools:  Suzanne O'Neal and Virginia Culbertson.  These are the two who guide the instructional processes.  What will happen without them?  I sincerely hope that parent groups will get together and push the school board to find other areas of spending to cut instead.  If they don't, I'm afraid that Edgefield County will have another charter school to support in the form of a middle school.  If that happens, the district will be in more financial trouble than they ever imagined.  Parents, you have a choice.  If you choose once again to ignore everything that's going on and not voice your opinions and concerns now, then you will have lots of reasons, but no rights, to complain later on.  Please don't sit by quietly once again.

Dear Editor,
As a lifelong public school supporter, I am appalled by what is happening in our school system today.  Our Superintendent has no vested interest in Edgefield County and will leave our district in a shambles with no concern for the students, teachers or staff she has damaged along the way.  And to make matters worse, the school board is rubber stamping everything she does.  Apparently all of our board members are  caught up with their personal agendas and have no concern about the long term effects of their actions.  This is a wake up call for black and white parents who care about the education their child is receiving.  When Dr. Crenshaw (with the board's support) finishes the hatchet job she is doing on our system, our children will be unable to get into colleges or to compete for jobs because of their sub-standard education.   Research shows class size to be one of the most critical factors in student's learning.  With Dr. Crenshaw's current plan of dismissing certified teachers, all of our classes will be at maximum size by Fall or sooner, and many of those will be taught by teachers with little experience and poor training.  While Dr. Crenshaw is spending money on non-certified staff and salary and travel for herself, our teachers do not have enough paper for their students.  Get involved!

One explination was they're going to fire the experienced teachers and rehire with new ones because they are cheaper.  That's just great! Let's get a bunch of teachers that don't know what they're doing to teach. That'll raise our grades and AYP!

Why did you bother to report on all the teens that got arrested the other night? Why was that "news"?

Editor's note: When any event takes up the time of a majority of available deputies and Troopers that would otherwise be providing for our protection, it is worthy of a news report whether it be an alleged party gone awry or a carload of teens allegedly drinking and smoking dope on our roads. If the reports stop just one teen from engaging in the same activity, ending in death this year, it is worth it.

I am glad that Senator Obama won this Presidential election.  To all the folks out there that thought America died on election day 2008, like I did, Rejoice.  If an African American can become President of the United States (the most powerful job in the world) special preference is no longer needed.  I urge everyone that reads this to contact the member of the House of Representatives that speaks for you and encourage them to put on the ballot on the next election, to get rid of such foolishness as needing special preference and affirmative action. Now that we know that an African American can have the most powerful job in the world it means that they are capable of doing anything such as the following:  getting out of government housing, no more welfare checks and EBT cards and blaming everybody else for their problems except themselves.

I was at a cash register this evening at a major discount retail store. When it came time to pay I realized that I had left my wallet locked in a compartment in my car. I asked my sister to run out to get it so I could pay. My mom was with me so we were parked in handicapped parking at the front of the store directly in front of the door. The register was a front register near the door also. As my sister left to retrieve my wallet the "lady" behind me decides she needs to voice her displeasure at me. First, she had yelled at her daughter while they were in line about a magazine she wanted and told her that she couldn't get it because she 'couldn't behave". Then she gets in my face and tells me that "I just have to tell you that you are a "very rude and inconsiderate person" She then left in a huff to find another register-where she had to wait in a longer line. The cashier looked perplexed. I turned to the woman-as she is not a lady- and told her," I am parked up front in handicapped she will be back in just minute and you are the one being rude. I certainly didn't plan on leaving my wallet to make you wait." All of this in front of her two young girls. Just for the record, the girl wanted a magazine because it had Obama's picture- the women was black, I am not. what an example to set, I never raised my voice to her and tried to apologize when I realized I had left my wallet. Of course I could have cancelled the transaction, in which case she would have waited longer for a manger to come and cancel it out. I'm so glad that she is such a positive role model in her children's lives. What an example of courtesy, graciousness and patience to set. I'm willing to be that these children probably never do wrong at school either and if they do its always the teachers fault. No wonder children talk so rudely to adults now. I was with my mother and would have been never thought of talking to another adult like that in front of her, then again, I would have never been that rude to begin with, I was brought up with manners. Some people should not pro-create.

Every day I read in the "Wandering Minds" about people that do not agree with others opinion or point of view being considered  to show signs of discrimination, or being a  racist and hate of other individuals. And that is not the case a majority of the time. Just because you don't agree does not make you any of these things, you can love the individual and not love what they do. Wrong is just wrong and you don't have to except it to make others happy.
"God loved his children, but He did not love their sin".  Just remember that the faults that you usually point out in someone else, are actually the faults you see within yourself! If you call someone a racist, someone who hates or discriminates are you really labeling them according to your own faults. Maybe these people should take the time to think before they speak! " God said that we are to love our neighbors and be our brothers keeper" and all we do is try and tear each other apart. Where is the love?

I went to the Fox Creek website and counted nine admins.  & 22 teachers/faculty.  Of course some of those teachers are STILL not certified so do they really count?

As for getting another Guidance Counselor....hopefully this means they are going to let the one that can't do her job and never could go!  That would be nice!  I heard she was a cop before, maybe she should try it again.

I also see by their site that they added a third Spanish teacher.  Obviously the first one (since she is still not certified) still can not do the job so why not add another language instead of adding two more Spanish teachers.  Who knows what they are planning, but I was out by the "new school property" two weeks ago and nothing looked different except that they cleared some stuff to burn for the Homecoming bonfire.  Did not notice anything else going on there.

Now that budgets are tightening, Rex is not interested in spending reforms, instead he is looking to the private sector for more money.
Oddly, this type of public-private partnership was rejected by Rex when private money would have also gone to private schools and charters.

You know what Editor you are a true Down hard racists. Just go ahead and put your sheet on.

How dare you mention his mom is white and was raise by his rich grandparents so what can you determined who will be your parents or grandparents no. I thought I told you stop putting negative information there we need help with people putting positive things so we can heal as a country and you don’t make things better. I don’t know who your mother is or who raise you but she needs a beaten.

Okay, so if I state the truth I am a racist. If I hide the truth I am not. Well, call me a racist then because I do not know how to lie. If you want lies, try reading CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, and NPR. The same ones who are not reporting that white liberals (those who helped elect your leader Obama) are calling blacks "ignorant (N-word's)" because they were the ones who shot down gay marriage in California. The white vote was split amost evenly, blacks voted against it by a margin above 70%.

I disagree with Obama because of his political leanings not his race, your fellow liberals call blacks the N-word and ignorant and they get a pass.

I make the following suggestion; and it is not to take away from the hard work and achievement of this year's STHS Football Team....they truly have done an oustanding job this year.  However, a few years ago, Mr Thompson, in my opionion, made one of the most irresponsible requests of the school board (and those idiots approved it)....asking that the county taxpayers purchase championship rings for the Football Team.  It was my understanding (and I may be off on the figure) that the amount was nearly $10,000....imagine if that money had been set aside...what texbooks or programs could have been purchased with that money?  Anyway, if the Football Team wants Championship Rings....then the parents, the players, or the Boosters should purchase them....not the taxpayers....we've alreay paid for the Field, the Stands, the Buses, the School...and countless other things.
When employees are being laid off and programs cut back....to do something as irresponsible as this (if they consider it), then "heads should roll" (figuritively).

I would like to say a great thanks to our local fire departments like Belvedere, Merriweather, and Sage Mill. They always step up and assist all other fire departments. For instance they went all the way to downtown North Augusta to help that department. Thanks for all your great and hard work.

I heard that County Line Fire Department's Asst. Chief told all three of these departments on the radio, at the same time, that County Line would cover them while they were helping North Augusta. If I’m correct that’s a lot of area for the five members from County Line to handle.  I have a question for your readers out there.  The question is Mr. Asst. Chief how are you going to do that, and if you “can cover all of this area”, then why can’t you protect your own district? That is bad news.  Look at the article the editor wrote about the wreck on Highway 25 by Bream Oak.  Again, way to go Merriwether first responders.  Sounds like County Line failed to show again but they can cover all the other areas hummmm sounds funny doesn't it. Also I noticed the Chief never said that posted was not him so looks like the myspace page and post was correct BOO!!!! While the other public schools in the county are being hit severely with financial cuts, Fox Creek sits there like nothing is wrong.  They currently have 10 (TEN) administrative people and 19 teachers.  I have no issue with the teachers, but come on, the administrative folks are excessive.  While the kids that can't (or won't) go to Fox Creek are sitting in their classes going without supplies, Fox Creek is operating with TWO guidance counselors.  Under current state law, they only need one.  They have two administrative assistants, I bet the school could operate just fine with one.  Maybe a few more hours of work, but the rest of Edgefield county educators who have had their hours cut would love such an opportunity.  To top it off, Fox Creek is actually going to build a new school. (Go out to Short Cut Rod and see for yourself).  What goes around comes around.  Next year when the state funds are cut, the Board members can start selling their stuff to pay the bills.  That would be Obama justice—redistribute the wealth !!!  Come on Fox Creek--Show some compassion and reduce your spending like the rest of the county.

He has kept us from suffering many planned attacks during his time in office.  It is true the economy has taken a big swing south recently, however, no president has control over the free market. Congress, however, has been a factor by encouraging and allowing Freddie and Fannie to make loans they knew could not be paid back, thus creating the financial credit market collapse. To all the fools who voted for Obama thinking he would help the jobless situation in our country:

His new chief of staff was Clinton's point man for NAFTA and CAFTA - instruments that destroyed heavy industry in the US and sent millions of good jobs away forever.

Now he wants to extend amnesty to a minimum of 12 million illegal immigrants - allocating millions of more jobs that could go to out of work Americans. These invading hordes would be extended
"entitlements" and benefits funded by the takeover of our confiscated IRA's.

These "new Americans:  will swell the socialist voting roles by millions - ensuring Comrade Obama's reelection.  The border will be thrown open and tens of millions more will rush in.

The law of supply and demand can't be overturned by Obama's executive orders anymore than he can order away the law of gravity.  The greater supply of workers will further drive down the cost of labor,
lowering wages for native born Americans- more of whom will have to play ball with the administration to get the handouts they need to survive.  They will vote for their "savior" rather than risk getting cut off from his (teat).

The only ones to benefit will be Obama.

I think sending the little Obamas to the public schools would send a strong message of endorsement for the public schools. Oh yes, someone once remarked that a DC public school teacher is required to wear a hard hat, bullet resistant vest and shin guards as normal attire. I have a question regarding voting precincts. I live on Jeter Street, my house in on the courthouse side of the street- near Strom's Laundromat. When you posted the map showing the lines for county council I noticed that Jeter Street was divided- courthouse side one district, Stroms laundromat the other., at least the way I read it. I voted in the Dorn-Faust race which I believe is District 1. I noticed on my voter registration card that it says district 2 county council. I registered to vote in Edgefield county in 98 as I am originally from "the valley" and moved here in 93 after I married. Have the districts been redrawn since that time or changed, until I started reading edgefielddaily, I had no idea what went on in local politics as I never read a local paper. If Austin Rhodes didn't talk about it, I didn't know-and he rarely talks SC politics, although I have heard them site edgefielddaily as a source for news. As you are much more informed on this issue than I , I thought I would begin by asking you. WHen I voted I showed them my drivers license and not my voter ID as it was in my car that was in the shop in Orangeburg, where it left me stranded on Monday night on the way back from picking my nephew up from The Citadel so he could come home to vote.

On a different note, where can I find the demographics for the racial breakdown of state employees? If available can you find them concerning each department within the State governement such DSS, or Dept of Corrections ? I'm just curious. Thanks for your help,. Keep up the good work. Although I  am a die hard Clemson fan-we seem to share the same political views and I enjoy reading edgefielddaily. Its how I start and end my day every day. Its nice to see unbiased reporting on issues. I look forward also to seeing your wife bring some much needed fiscal responsibility and guidance to Edgefield county council, now if they will just listen and take notes.

Editor's note: The County Council district lines were redrawn after the 2000 census. They will be redrawn again after the 2010 count. The voter's registration office does not issue new cards when district lines are redrawn.

I loved the "Obama style" (column). You hit the nail on the head. How long do you think it will take those who work for a living to wake up and see they just got soaked by lies?

Editor's note: Somewhere around April 15, 2009. The real impact will come in April of 2010 when the Democrats allow President Bush's Across the Board Tax Cuts to expire, raising everyone's taxes. But that will not require a vote, so by not extending it they will claim the rise in taxes was all because of President Bush, not them.

Pay attention.

OK Let's play that game...  I agree, Bush wants to keep the rich RICH.   WELL, if the republicans are supported by the rich then they would want to KEEP the rich Rich. By the same token, since the Democrates are supported by the poor then they are better served by keeping the poor Poor.

Looks like Jesse, Al, and Company have plenty to do by feeding the victim mentality.  Have the local preachers been preching the victim mentality?  Sounds like somebody has been pecking the ground for the "Victim Mentality Feed"

Black people in America will continue to fall behind all the other races in economic and educational terms. Up until Obama was elected they always had the blame "whitey" argument to fall back on, asserting that whites got all the best jobs and deliberately kept black people down.

So with a "brother" in charge and the expectation that he will throw billions at the various non-white populace, who are black Americans going to blame for their failings now? Afterall, if a black man can become president....

In the long term Obama's election will benefit America. Not because he will do wonders for America, but because it will finally destroy the myth that black american failings are all down to the whites. Ultimately they will have to face up to the harsh truth: Whites don't owe them a living, it's all up to themselves. Quoted from The Daily Telegraph out of the UK.

Edgefield County Schools are in serious trouble and many have no faith in her leadership abilities.  We are all taking a "hit" ---especially the children of Edgefield Co. How much of her salary is she willing to give up for the children?

In addition, I understand newly elected Chris Hoffmann will not accept pay for his service on our school board. That says a lot about the kind of man Mr. Hoffmann is. Funny how none of the other board members have bothered to step up and do the same thing. Imagine that.

Editor's note: I'm not a legal expert by any means, but I do not believe that a school board member can refuse his or her pay. They can collectively vote to do so, but otherwise they will have to individually accept payment and then donate the money back to the school system, after taxes. Not to doubt Mr. Hoffmann's honorable intentions.

more state budget cuts, and once again they affect the "little guy", their will be no cuts to get rid of some of the "chiefs" , instead they will "find the cuts" by cutting money to colleges so they will be forced to raise tuition-again, or put more costs on the parent- many have already started by making students pay for copies at the library and charging outrageous fees per paper. They say that state revenues are down,- why? its the economy stupid. people don't have money to spend, they don't spend it so the state is going to charge more for things so people can afford to spend less.  I wonder if the state wouldn't be better off to get rid of the state income tax and go to a flat tax. That way everyone that buys something pays. even the illegal's, they have to guy something sometime. Many states have this, we have great tourist areas that have increased their sales tax amounts to get the revenues, hospitality taxes,.With the tourism industry alone it would have to bring in millions more to the state coffers'. I lived in Florida and I would move back, the biggest reason: no state income tax. I'm sure the state constitution would have to be amended to support such a change but why not put it to the people? I'm tired of my husbands paltry 1% state pay raise-if they ever get one- going to pay for the increase in health care premiums. it would be nice to see it in our pocket instead. I still find it hard to believe that their aren't better alternatives to cutting the budgets to the state colleges and universities, there has to be some pork somewhere that could go instead. Sen. Massey, what say you?

I read wthat another 488 MILLION is to be slashed from the state budget, mostly affecting healthcare and colleges. are you kidding me? SC has the MOST EXPENSIVE instate tuition rates in the COUNTRY The citizens of SC cannot afford another tuition increase. We are paying 12 MILLION dollars a year to the federal government because the leadership in Columbia continues to play a childs game of slaps to see who will flinch first  on central child support collections. HEY LEGISLATURE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS STANDSTILL. it has gone on for over 14 years.  It is way past the point of ridiculous and embarrasing. .Local schools are top heavy with administrators making over 100,000 a year plus benefits. I have a suggestion, if a law needs to be changed to eliminate some of these positions due to an archaic ruling such as the problem with Aiken County schools, DO IT ,CHANGE IT that alone would put more money in the classrooms.   We are talking about early release of prisoners due to budget cuts yet again, in the dept of corrections. which seems to be the dept of choice to cut anytime budget cuts come around. can you feel safe with fewer guards? not I, how about a disgruntled employee because once again , no raise for DOC but hey, lets cut the DOC budget again.the DOC employees dont need to feed thier family, who needs a roof over their head? its just DOC  they arent a real dept anyway. lets see. DOC. Education, and healthcare are taking the biggest cuts. what does that tell you? that our wonderful govenor in Columbia does not care at all about the well being of his constituents in his state. cant afford College? so what, get a job, oh wait, you cant find a full time job in this state,to bad. nothing I can do that program was cut so I can  make a lobbyist happy by not cutting his program.  cant afford health care, who cares, it doesnt matter that the  uninsured are forced into the ER causing higher costs for medical care.because  its more important that the insurance  lobbyist are happy   WE ARE NOT IMPORTANT. cant find a full time job in over 2 years, that program to assist has been cut out of the budget.who needs job, just apply for welfare. but hey lets give the legislature a raise. The people who we have elected to act as our LOBBYIST in columbia refuse to stand up for our interest. Shane cannot do it alone. we have to let our governor know we do count, and we cannot afford anymore of his budget cuts.

Re Editor's note: McCain drew crowds of a few thousand, Palin drew crowds of 65,000. Who was more popular to conservatives?

You always exaggerate numbers when things don't go your way. She never drew more than 20,000 and that's a fact. I watched the Alaskan Senatorial debates last Friday night on C-SPAN. Ted Stevens, the convicted Senator from Alaska stated that "if I am not elected, Alaska stands to lose 40% of it's operating state budget because of all the federal money received by the state". Just think if SC received 40% of it's operating budget from the federal govt, which would be approx 2.8 billion dollars. Stevens referred to Palin as "nothing more than a figurehead". He went on to say that a monkey could run a state govt if it received all the federal and corporate welfare that Alaska receives. It's easy to cut property taxes when you are a beneficiary of federal and corporate welfare. Palin is an idiot and anyone who believes she is qualified to be VP or Pres is also an idiot, ergo, Mr. Editor, you are a BIG IDIOT. What's going to be fun to watch is your wife sitting across the table from Stormin' Norman Dorn. It will be hilarious to watch him belittle her and I hope he publicly humiliates her every chance he gets. You and her deserve the utmost in public ridicule.

Editor's note: Wow, where to begin? News reports from a Florida visit (depending on which one you read so I will give the "low ball report") show Gov. Palin drew at least 60,000 in a visit to the "Village". So much for your comment, "She never drew more than 20,000 and that's a fact." I guess we see how "factual" your accounts are.

As for County Council-elect Genia Blackwell, I have no worries, she is a recognized nationally within one of the largest financial institutions in the world for her leadership abilities and is one of the strongest women I know. She is better suited for a run for a much higher office than the Edgefield County Council but chose to serve her home community. I doubt Norman Dorn, who can't construct a sentence in proper English, will be much of a challenge. She accomplishes more in a day than Norman Dorn has in his entire life. What feat has Dorn ever accomplished other than being able to
(hopefully) change his underwear each day?

I did not think it was right. and to the person writing saying that the 2 people that came into defense dont even know how to use a computer. I would retrace your steps. If you really know the situation then you would know more about the people writing in response to it. It was NOT the family that lives their! They did not approve of him dressing up like that! If you have a problem with the person dressed up like that then go to him because it was none of this family!! You know exactly who it was and you can take that up with that person. Please do not make assumptions about the income of people in Edgefield County as you obviously do not have facts to back this up.  I, for one, make more than $100K per year; however, it has taken me 25 years of hard work to get to my current salary level.  Do  I feel that the government has a right to take my hard earned money and redistribute it simply because I make more than other people? Heck no!  I pay my fair share of state and federal taxes.  I give money to my church. I donate my "fair share" to United Way through my employer.  I support Christian camps, Angel Tree ministry, Shriners' Hospital, Red Cross, Toys for Tots and many other fine charitable organizations with donations of money or items.  In addition, through my children, I donate to the schools and the various charitable organizations they support.  Therefore, I feel like I am redistributing my wealth to the poor and needy without having the governm ent do this for me.  Welfare, which used to be a means to overcome temporary hardships, has now become a way of life for generations of people.

One day after his election, Obama's strategists are talking about nationalizing (stealing) the 401-K savings Americans have struggled to accumulate.  Plans are to take the money and "credit" the loser's Social Security account.  One wonders how many voters would have changed their votes if O had told them about this scheme.  By the way did anyone else notice the communist flag being waved and the commie t-shirts being worn in celebration Tuesday night on TV?

On a positive note, congratulations to African Americans for not going wild in the streets and doing damage as some had feared.  Pride and respect triumphed.

Editor's note: I warned readers about this plan months ago. Placing people's 401-K's into the Social Security fund will allow the government to use your money as "they" see fit. You cannot "redistribute wealth" unless you take it from the people who earned it in the first place. See this report for a glaring example of how Democrats view the money you earn.

I only wish that I was the one that stayed next to the house when this happened! Then I could have “been something that I am not”…A THUG!

Then I could have went in my house, donned a ski mask and skull cap…loaded up my pistol with some blanks, (Which I do keep a stash of) and then proceed to run up in their yard shooting at the guy in the KKK suit!  Finally, after unloading a full clip, and watching him probably wet himself, I would then hold my hand out saying, “Trick or Treat!!!”

NOW THAT WOULD BE TOOOOOOOOO FUNNY! …I wonder how they would take that.

What is your opinion Mr. Editor? You have yet to chime in on this topic! Is a KKK suit funny? …because I know when I (And many other folks in Johnson) see a KKK suit at any time, the last thing on my mind is taking it as a joke and laughing about it!

BUT during the President election, and after, I have been disappointed with edgefielddaily's editor. He stated earlier he would not take sides with the readers. But he has. I would like to think that he would not pick sides, because this will cause him to lose readers.
His editorial on the now PRESIDENT ELECT (elected not only by one state but 50 states), was their own opinion which should have been kept to themselves.  As I  recall I have commended the editor for moving forward and over looking some of the comments made against him. Now he is making negative comments about the president of the United States, this puts him in the same category with his readers that is narrow-minded . I guess now if this keep up I will have all my friends (African American, Caucasian, American Indian, and Hispanic) to stop reading the edgefielddaily, and have the people they told about the edgefielddaily to stop reading it also. As a matter of fact I did stop reading when I first read about the negative comments. I then received a called from Germany about the editorial, and I read it, highly disappointed, because it allow readers from across the country to comment badly about Edgefield. I know the editor will probably not print ties comment but that is okay. I will spend money to have this article printed in our local paper the Chronicle, and the State papers.

Many, many thanks to Mr. Faust for trying. The citizens of District 1 have two years to formulate a plan, get started now.

Perhaps next time someone should monitor who escorts the absentee folks to the office - hint…

You know it's amazing how all these, pardon the pun, lower class welfare folk think Obama is the "Black Messiah." I guess they also think they are the only ones that voted for Barack Obama. If I remember correctly, I don't think North Carolina is 97% black. Let's remember that it took a whole nation of combined races to vote for the first African-American Ivy League educated President. Obama talks about making change, but it's not what he says before he enters the White House, but what he does after he gets there.

And to the person that wrote this you are exactly right. The white population is still the majority when it comes to blacks. People see that we need a change. Not just white or blacks but all walks of life that have a right to vote. Why is it editor that if McCain would have won everything the next day would have been okay we still have the white man in the Big House but that a man of color wins people that were for McCain and work with the public or even in the school system was mean and very short with people of color or blacks. I know it is going to take sometime because even me of color I half to get use to seeing a black man come to address the nation for the very first time. It’s okay because it seems that we all are looking for a change. Obama voters don’t write in negative stuff give them some time because that is a big change for the entire world. Let’s show our follow Americans that we can be a nation that cares for our people. EDITOR I know you are just doing your job but you also can change some of your conversation as well to help people get use to a Change. You always say not in these exact words but why we all just can’t get along Edgefield County.

I am going to make this part short I met Shane Massey for the very first time and he is a very pleasant person. We had a very interesting conversation. PEOPLE don’t just watch TV ads and make your decision get the Facts you would be surprise who do what in congress.

Editor's note: I have never made any comment based on race. Every opinion is based on political philosophies of the national candidates. I never made a comment in support of Sen. John McCain, but I did support Gov. Sarah Palin. I am a conservative when it comes to national elections and have not hidden my personal opinions in that regard. I have not and will not get involved in local elections.

Obama = Hope
Yes we can.
Yes we did!!!!

I was watching Fox News on Wed. evening and it was reported that Sarah Palin did not know what countries were in North America. Also, she did not know that Africa was a continent and not a country. She thought that South Africa was a region of Africa and did not know that it was a sovereign nation. There were many other details of Palin that Carl Cameron reported that were astonishing. It's amazing that so many people believed she was qualified to be VP.

Editor's note: I find it amazing she has more executive experience than Sen. Obama and yet you call her unqualified. The "reports" you speak of were not "sourced", they were un-verified and un-nammed rumors of McCain operatives who wanted to blame someone else for their failure to get a liberal Republican elected. Gov. Palin was the only thing that stopped a landslide victory of Obama in the popular vote. McCain drew crowds of a few thousand, Palin drew crowds of 65,000. Who was more popular to conservatives?

I can't believe Norman Dorn was re-elected. I live in his district and was sincerely hoping for change. I am sure he was elected on the basis of many residents voting straight party tickets. I had a lady behind me in line ask a poll worker to show her on the sample ballot where to vote for "all democrats". She actually had no idea who she was voting for in the elections, other than president, she just knew that she wanted to vote for all democrats. I don’t know why I even take the time to know the issues. I wonder how many "if I had known' voters there will be when Obama shows his true "color". His socialist agenda will be apparent, not every remark will be scripted, we saw a peek with “Joe the plumber” questioned him on his policy.   I honestly look for the US to suffer another terrorist attack on his watch. After all, how many did we see under Clinton -USS Cole, World Trade Center, and the embassy attacks in Africa, and he did what to keep the US safe from another attack?  He decided that the federal law enforcement agencies didn't need to share information. (See 9/11 report)    The Patriot Act to be gone, second amendment rights will be challenged, taxes will go up to pay for all the "freebies”. Gas prices skyrocket within 2 years because of his tax policy and refusal to drill. I hope and pray that I am wrong. We will just have to wait and see but my gut instinct tells me there will be a lot of remorse in how people voted come next election. Now is the time for the Republicans to go back to the base of their party and embrace true conservatism. They saw how Palin helped to breathe new life into the campaign, it wasn’t a fluke or because she is female, it’s because she is what true republicans want in a candidate. Take note.

I would like to take this time to thank Trace Faust for running for District 1. The money and time that you put in this election will come back to you one day I'm sure!!!! Moron Dorn never did a thing to get voted other than be born black. In the voters minds I'm sure we all are thinking what did the people think that didn't vote for you have in their minds. I'm sure that race is what was in their minds and not what is truly important to our district that over the years we in district 1 have been a laughing matter and will still be. I have called Trace when I was cold or hot and he came on a Sunday or a Holiday with not a word said, other than lets get this thing going. I'm sure that he would have done the same if put on the county council. Well you still have my vote and not that it counted but I never called Moron Dorn  in 15 years and have no plans of ever doing so. He is a sorry person in my mind and was sorry when he got the votes. This district was setup so a black man could win and win he did. So back to the same old way of not helping our district grow or improve but the people have spoken and  God have mercy on us.

I would like to also thank your family for letting us have your time away from them when you were out their trying to better our district.

Hi, I am writing to respond about the people who said they don’t like to bring up racial actions! Well, you are the racist people, and noise ones at that!

First off it was not anything to do with the two families. It was Halloween and the person dressed up came and brought the kids to this house for candy. They were at the house for a few mins. These people who live there can NOT control how other people dress up. The adults who live at the house did not dress up. The people who live at that house are not racist at all. To inform the people who wrote this, this family has a Black soon to be daughter in law and 5 black people in our family. They also have 2 Spanish nieces and they love them all very much. Just because they don’t live in the town of Johnston you people do not see them. You do not know this family.  You should get the facts before running your mouth about things you don’t know!! As far as burning crosses, that is a big bunch of bull also. If that was true do you think the Johnston police would have allowed it? NOT! The Chief of police never parked in front of the house at any time during that night. Halloween is a fun time and its people like you who ruin it for kids.

Also, teen age girls next door was not home. But, who cares? It was a night for the children to go out and get candy and have some fun. Raciest people like you try and cause trouble, a week after Halloween. Encourage them to go and vandalize someone property, should tells everyone, you are not mature people. Who are you to judge others?!

To bring up the property dispute that is between the two families, has nothing to do with Halloween and definitely none of your business anyways.  Look up the property lines, see for your self who was trespassing. The property lines did not ever move. And as far as the harassment, there you go again; you do not know the facts. You should not insinuate harassment when you do not know the facts, or the law!! Just some people with no life, and they need one, so they could mind their own business.

Joke Hell, how can you call dressing up as KKK a joke. That’s never been a joke to anybody. We all know what the KKK stands for. Not only do you sound stupid, you are stupid if you think that’s a joke. You’re more racist than you think. Why hide behind a sheet, (it can’t protect you when you get your ass beat down), would you then call it a joke? I think not.  If you have something to say, say it with your mouth not with a sheet. The sheet is just a cover up for how you really feel and want to act. So you think it’s a joke, I do to because that’s show’s you, the man (in KKK outfit) and the family that rode up are all jackasses and I would cover up to. To the girls and their dad we are proud of you for not showing ignorant like these people did and that’s no joke.

Editor's post: I have received information that Fox Creek Charter School Board Chairwoman Sherolyn Bishop not only wrote a letter to the editor of the Augusta Chronicle endorsing Edgefield County School Board member Scott Chitty in a general election in a possible violation of the school’s tax-exempt status, but that hand-outs were given to some students (unconfirmed as no one has given me a copy of one) and that she made phone calls to the parents of students attending the school from a list of names and numbers obtained from the school. The phone calls, I have confirmed, were made from her home on Currytown Road. As an officer of a 501(3)c Mrs. Bishop is not allowed to campaign in a political race on the basis to benefit the 501(3)c by the outcome of a general election. A violation could result in the school losing its tax exempt status and as a result, its public funding.

Mr. Editor,
As an attendee of the Halloween party that took place at the "3100 block of Martintown Road" I feel as if I should let everyone know the facts of the party.  The strangers who showed up and started trouble were uninvited and unwelcomed.  Everyone should also know that my brother, one of the residents of the house, told the "troublemakers" to leave many many times and when I realized they weren't going to leave without causing trouble, I called the lawmen; not once, not twice, but three times to get them to leave.  Also, no parents came to "retrieve their children", everyone at the party was of legal age and were not breaking any laws.  As for the picture of myself; my parents have always taught me to respect those who respect me; but as I recall my father asked "the photographer" very nicely to leave the property, but instead "the photographer" had some smart remarks and just went to the end of the road; steady taking pictures, so when respect was not shown for my family and me, I had none to show back.  And as for bringing up the party that took place in May of 2007-we all read what you had to say about that party, why bring it all up again?

Editor''s note: If you would like I will be more than happy to publish copies of the incident reports to give the full account of what took place and the names of all involved. It is public information. "The photographer" was asked to leave the property and complied with the request without "smart remarks". The statement to your father was that your father inform the deputies that he had asked "the photographer" to leave and that he was complying with his request.

In addition, you were asked three times to return to the property and not have your picture taken. You demanded it be taken and that it be published. It was. Now you want to complain.

As for why the other story was linked, the reason is because the parties involve underage teens consuming alcohol, as police reports clearly show.

An officer working the Thurmond football game last Friday night stated there were several high school kids that were talking about going to the party, so your claim that everyone there was over age does not hold water either. Should we bring up the wreck that took place just a short distance away?

Concerning this election and the end of civilization, God help us all, etc etc etc

Seriously folks, we didn't lose our lives, we didn't lose our dignity, we didn't even lose our rights to be bigots or even ignorant.  Nothing will really change here in our shielded enclave.  The church will still be scaring us into giving them too much money for too little action.  All our friends will still be afraid of the Blacks and Mexicans.  Middle Easterners will still be the devils in our lives.  We can still be racist and not worry about what our neighbors think about it.  Our education scores can continue to be behind the national average, we can still have a low high school graduation rate.  Our wages can still be low, and our unemployment rates can still be higher than they were 8 years ago.  All these things can stay the same, because we want them to, we fear anything but, and as long as we keep going to church, praising God, teaching these values to our kids, our way of life will stay intact.  Life just stinks because of those dang Lefty's.

NOW DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT, DOES THIS SOUND LIKE THE WAY TO BE, LET'S BE HONEST TO OURSELVES, WE NEED TO GET OVER IT, GROW UP AND MOVE ON.

Marxist Obamaites - don't pop the champaign yet.  Your boy must file a writ of certiorari before US Supreme Court by December 1 in the case "Berg v. Obama".  In this lawsuit Mr. Berg charges that Obama is not a native-born American, and that he was in fact born in Kenya.  This would disqualify Obama to serve as president.  Up till now, Obama's handlers have said that Berg, a Philadelphia lawyer, "has no standing" to challenge Obama's qualifications and have refused to provide evidence to refute Berg's evidence: including testimony of Obama's Kenyan relatives who witnessed his live birth in Mombassa.  While it is a Hail Mary pass, it is a last hope for our country before it slides into the abyss of Islamo-Marxist socialism - like Libya or Somalia.

Editor's note: Mr. Berg is a former State Attorney General and a Democrat.

I wondered when you were going to address the school budget crisis situation on the headlines page, and I wondered, also, if you, like the general public, were unaware of just how critical it has become.  It is much more than teachers being asked to uplug everything at the end of the day.  I encourage you to do an in-depth, investigative piece on what is going on, so that the public is fully informed.

Editor's note: I have been following the situation but until things were finalized there was not much to report on other than supposition.

Editor's comment: Following are some comments about an opinion in the headlines on Wednesday from Obama supporters.

- Thank God I don't live in your neighborhood. What useless drivel in your headline about Obama. I figure it's going to take one more generation, perhaps two, for the country to finally marginalize such narrow-mindedness. For Edgefield though, probably a lot longer. I'll be sure to avoid any part of your community until it happens.

- I just wanted to let you know how proud I am not to live in a racist town any longer.  I moved away after graduation 1984 and thought by this day and time the racism would have subsided a little but after viewing this so called paper and not one mention of the new president of the United States I was  very appalled. I just wanted to inform you and any one like you that when you die and go to that all white heaven with your all white God, surrounded by all the all white faces in that make believe heaven, fan some of the fire because ignorant that would be hell. Always remember if you can't love and live together on earth don't even think you'll make it any further.  Shame on you!! A true Barak Obama fan!!!!!

Editor's note: A fair warning to all. Now that Obama has been elected, if you call him liberal, Marxist, or disagree with his politics you will be labeled a "racist". Throughout the year and a half he ran for president I never commented on his race, just his political philosophy. But somehow, now that I have once again called him a Marxist, I am a racist. I have an idea, as strange as it may be to Obama supporters, defend his political leanings and the fact he is the "most liberal Senator in history. Please, leave race out of the discussion as it has nothing to do with the topic.

He is now the President.

The Republicans were all stun
As they stood in their tracks
They could not beleave
The President is now BLACK.

Peoples jumped for joy
All across the land
As Obama stood tall
Saying, "YES WE CAN".

At McCain conceding speech
He stood alone
His followers were so mad
They left and went home.

"Come one come all" says Obama
"Take my hand

And YES WE CAN
I have a dream
YES WE CAN

RE;I normally don't like to bring up racial actions because I feel it only adds to the problem. I just couldn't keep quiet about some very tasteless, hurtful, racial actions taken by a Johnston family on Halloween night, This White family, knowing that the parent was at work and only the young Black daughters were at home, next door, dressed up in KKK robes, put crosses in the yard, in immitation of an ancient, racial cross burning. Luckily, someone saw or heard about this and contacted the father at work who then called home to prepare his daughters for it. Undoubtedly trouble was expected because the police chief stayed parked in front of the house until trick-or treating was over, I must give credit to these young girls, because everyone knows they could have made a few calls around town and had every egg throwing, toilet paper rolling, vandalizing teen and punks and some good kids, fired up and who's to say what the home and autos would have looked like the next morning? Their not doing this showed the girls maturity levels are a lot higher than the adult neighbors. I guess this is just another part of a property dispute disguised as harassment! Go figure!?.

Actually, this was not done to scare anyone. It was a friend of the family who is just insane in his own way that was trying to be funny. It had nothing to do with the fact they had a property dispute. To prepare his daughters for what? for a cross burning in their front yard? They wouldn't do that let alone get away with it for two minutes. Halloween is about being something your not and having fun and making fun of something. maybe people should learn to take a joke and laugh.

I hope we can move on to something else other than politics. For me it is over. I think we are in real trouble. I plan to not pay any attention to the news. I don't want to hear anything more Obama has to say. It is not because he is black, it is because of his lack of experience and what he has to say.
He has told people what they want to hear. But being the President of the United States is alot more than just 'talk'.

I think it is a shame the lengths people went to, to get Obama elected. Why didn't these people take the time to vote prior to a black man running for president. Our country elected someone for president based on votes from young inexperienced people who liked what Obama had to say, people who never
bothered to vote before, and people who went out and voted for Obama just because he was black. The choice has been made and now we as a country will suffer the consequences.

This is a response to the letter about the man in the KKK suite in johnston on halloween night. I was sitting there at that house when the man and his family pulled up in their vehicle! It was not that family that lives their!!! and they did not have any crosses burning in their yard. The man carried a cross with him but it was never lit up for any thing. The chief of police did not sit out in front of the house either. the cops were riding up and down the street all night for all the trick or treaters but did not sit their and watch. The man in the KKK suite did not stay long at this residence. He stood their for a few minutes and talked then him and his family got into their vehicle and left. So I dont know who wrote the comment about this but they did not KNOW what was going on!! and regards to the neighbors next door, nothing even happend to them!! IT was not anything to do with them and nobody tried to do anything to them. The guy did this more as a  joke than anything. The man and his family does not even live in the town of johnston. and as far as the girls maturity level, it was not pointed at them. it was not pointed at anybody!!!!! It was a simple joke. So if a little kid wore a white angel outfit I could call that racist to because its a "white" outfit??? I dont think so. the property disputment had nothing to do with this matter and whoever wrote that comment needs to mind their own business because that is between those two households and nobody else. We know who wrote this and we know that you are PREDJUDICE about us. You do not have your facts straight and you need to get them straight before you put things in the paper for others to read. YOU are the ones causing a racial dispute!! Plus your agging on the fact to do a egg throwing, and toliet paper throwing. You are the ones putting things into peoples heads!

And don't they pay non-certified staff more than the district non-certified staff? How can this be? They are in serious violations of their charter and their responsibilty to students. Seems like none of the rules apply to them. Why is Crenshaw not looking into this herself? This could make her a heroine in Edgefield County if she would be bold, get the documentation, and shut them down for not abiding by their charter. But, oh yeah, I forgot, she is trying to please Cooks, Bibbs, and Chitty to keep her job. Maybe the new board will send her packing before more of our good teachers and principals leave. If they only serve 1 term (4 years) and shut Fox Creek down that will be well worth their time of public service!

Editor's note: There is no way of knowing what Fox Creek does. They refuse, or take months or longer, to respond to the School District's requests for documentation. Scott Chitty, Sallie Cooks, and James Bibbs would always run interfearance for the charter school.

Your post is pretty funny.  No really, I can see your aggrevation and laugh cynically along with you.  I think we would get along.  Now, on a more serious note.  I have to ask a potential friend, DO YOU REALLY know who is going to win Tuesday?  After all of the stats and commentary on TV you can differentiate the data and decypher WHO the victor is.  You should really persue a career in news commentary because after a few successful years at this you should be rolling in the dough.

More conflicting information from Greg Anderson.  On Greg Anderson's website he states "I'm ready to drive the Governor around in my pickup truck."  In an October 2008 meeting of the Aiken Democratic Party he stated "I won't listen to the Governor."  Ok- so while you're driving the Governor around you aren't going to listen to him. Right.

Also can you guess where Greg said this "I can just tell you, though, that my heart and my soul will be in this job." You would think it would be from campaining for the 25th district race regarding serving the people - well you'd be wrong.  This quote comes from the SC General Assembly in 2003, Journal of the House of Representatives, when Greg was a candidate for the Board of Trustees for Clemson.  He speaks quite passionately about being on the board- does he do so for the 25th district- shoot I don't know- haven't been to any town meetings where he has spoken.  Oh that's right he was at Mount Vintage.  Guess us middle class citizens don't get invites to those meetings.

If you want to vote for someone who's passionate and actually cares about the people of District 25- vote SHANE MASSEY!!

David did not whine about not being elected he complained about how the elections were run.  There were fliers handed out by FCHS teachers at the school telling parents who to vote for and the school board themselves manned the ballot box!  The way the FCHS writes their own rules and gets away with it is unreal.  With David on the board and a good board change out (Hoffman for Chitty & Collier for Cooks) will hopefully change some of that.  I for one am looking forward to a great change in the ECBOE!

When that school actually opens off Stephens Rd. that is when I will actually believe there will be a new school!

We know it was because it was something decent and you didn’t wont people to see the good of Obama only the negative stuff. Well thanks so much for showing us your true self.

Editor's note: I'm not sure what information you are speaking of. If I recieve a post that meets the rules I post it no matter who it supports. I will say that prior to having DSL, links to ads or video were not placed due to not being able to review the material before being listed. Someone could (and has) tried to send in a link claiming it was political but it turned out to be porn.  If I could not verify the link's content they were not posted, but I would send an email to the sender to inform them why.

Answer:
I believe that there are at least two commercials on local stations that are taking Massey over the coals.  They are not nice at all and are very misleading.

Shane does not have to tout his own horn.  His experience speaks for itself.  Before you say he voted for/against something do some research.

Re:  Every time he takes a vote he has to explain it.

I wouldn't mind ALL politicians doing so.

Re:  He is representing the Governor and is a puppet for Senator Greg Ryberg trying to further his political career.

As humans (if you are a Human ) you need to get over this stupidness , get down on your knees and repent. If you do not repent there is a place for people like you. Oh, the next time you write in , please let the writing be legible so we as readers can read it.

Re:  Why are so many of the blotter scared, Obama hasnʼt won yet?

Nope, and nobody is scared.  Just aggrevated at how someone that couldn't get a CIA job can be president......

Re:  Iʼm sure as hell not going to take care of all my lazy family (whether itʼs my brother, aunt, father or others) so I donʼt blame Obama for not taking care of his lazy dead beat family either.

Who said they were lazy?

Re: Youʼre criticizing Obama, what $ house do you stay in and are you taking care all you low class family members?

You actually classify your family members in such a way?  I do take care of a divorced non-blood handicapped family member completely AND pay more than 30% taxes in addition.  My taxes take care of HOW MANY families that remain on MY dole?

Re: What about McCain, is he taking care all his family thatʼs not working,

Explain who they are please but  I'll one-up you.  He is actually takeing care of a member of another family.  Remember Bridget?  Yep she is originally from Bangladesh and she was damaged goods before she got here.  They paid for her health care and I wonder what else they will pay for while BO's blood family members remain on wellfare and in poor countries.  Actually if BO is elected WE will be paying for MORE of their "needs."

Re: Be honest none of us are taking care of family members thatʼs not working cause the first thing we say is that I can hardly make my own ends meet.

Then you shouldn't live in a $400,000 house.

Re:  If either paid all the bills for family members would that matter in the White House, would that matter to you or me, No!

We Agree!!!

Re:  Very little is written about McCain but every other topic is about (the messiah) Obama.

Please write more about McCain because YOU will lose any arguement.

Re:  It feels different when the shoe is on the other foot huh.

I would LOVE for a blackman to be president!  Just so long as they are qualified at least as much as Palin.  Oh Yea.  They can't be socialist either.

Re:  Look back at other elections when it was white against white they pulled the dirt out on both candidates and treated them like dogs but not this time, all the dirt has been about Obama well McCain is no Saint/God either but theyʼre trying to keep him on a pedestal as a God.

WHO is?  Certainly not the media.  Stats are that "unfavarable coverage" is as follows:

TV
30 percent Obama
70 percent McCain

Newspaper
20 percent Obama
80 percent McCain

Re: Just because heʼs a war veteran does mean heʼs the best for the job. I mean I have 6 Veteran heroes in my family but neither is qualified to be President of the USA.

I wouldn't doubt that AT ALL

Re: Letʼs let race out and vote for the man YOU want to vote for and let ME vote for the man I want to vote for and you stop trying to influence me and others to vote for who you want as President.

Could this be a menial attempt at the "fairness doctrine."  Yea,,, I'm gonna shut up for you.  NOT!!!!!!!!!!

Re: All of this will come to an end 7:05pm -Nov. 4th. The one that receives the most votes will be the President of the USA. Then, letʼs see if actions speak louder than words.

Actually the electoral college will decide. Not our votes....  You see, we don't HAVE the right to vote which brings me to the subject of VOTER QUALIFICATION.  But THAT may be another post..

Just a few months ago, our citizens were offered a chance to begin the process of changing the old, tired failure of a government body refered to as the Edgefield County Council. There are several Districts whose voters had the foresight to vote for change and selected new individuals who will represent them with intelligence and  qualification. The voters of these Districts have done their part in preparing Edgefield County for future prosperity.

Now it is time for the citizens of District 1 to consider a chance for a change. The choice is simple. Do these good folks wish to continue with a Councilman who is a retired educator, but also has a reputation for placing the Council in embarrassing positions and possible lawsuits thru his ignorance. Are we ready to change from a man who leads some of his constituents, like blind sheep, to a Council Meetings where he condemn the County Budget.... only to show up at the next monthly meeting and vote for it's approval  as originally proposed? Can we afford another 2 years of Mr. Dorn wasting the Council's time ranting about his personal problems? Can anyone name one constructive objective he has spearheaded for his District?  Are we so blind as to think other government bodies and Corporations do not read our local media and shy away from our County because of poor local leadership? Are we as a District ready for a change?

District 1's chance for change is Trace Faust. Retired from the National Guard, Head Decan in his Church, local  voluntar fireman, advisor to local organizations, successful businesss local owner, and proven strong family man. A candidate willing to speak with a new voice for all for the citizens of District 1. A candidate with the ability to work with our other new Council Members for the betterment of Edgefield County!

Obama has run his entire campaign on the ideal of "CHANGE". Black, white, hispanic, male, female, no matter what you might be, I would urge all voters of District 1 to honestly ask themselves what is best for our community. Vote for CHANGE in Edgefield County as well!!  VOTE TRACE FAUST !!!!!

I want to talk about this Lord's Prayer and Shane Massey issue. The way I understand it, a Bill was introduced to allow various documents like the Magna Carter, Ten Commandments, etc. to be displayed in public places.  An Amendment to this Bill was then proposed to allow the Lord's Prayer to be inserted in the Bill and allowed to be displayed in public.  Shane voted AGAINST this Amendment.  He later voted for the entire Bill but he voted AGAINST the Amendment to allow the Lord's Prayer to be displayed in public.  The question he has never answered is why he voted AGAINST this Amendment. Nobody is saying that he is not a Christian, or does not believe in the Lord's Prayer, but why did he vote AGAINST the Amendment?  He is very deceptive in his response by ignoring this question and simply saying that he voted for the Bill.  This is a serious issue with me and he will NOT answer the question.  So he is NOT going to get my vote.

Secondly, in reference to this comment,
"Dear Mr. Editor,
A lot of people in this area has called Sen. Barack Obama everything they can think of, they
would rather lose their jobs, their houses, their business or go out in the back yard and kill themselves before they give a BLACK MAN a chance to make the world a better place for all mankind. White men has been running the U.S for hundred of years, why is so hard for some folks to except change??? Most of the white folks that I work with say, "we don't know anything about this man/boy", I have worked with these people for twenty five + years, and as long as it's white men running for presidents job that  statement has never been made---WHY???? "

Why would ANYONE, black OR white, think Obama wants to make "the world" a better place to live?  Have you really really looked at his background, the way he votes in the Senate by NOT voting then claiming he voted. As far as people not knowing anything about Obama, what do YOU know about him, besides that he is bi-racial, he hasn't been a Senator long enough to prove himself! If John McCain were black, I'd vote for him, not because he's black, but because of what he stands for and some of his standings that are important to me. Obama wants to give $845 Million dollars to South African countries, why?  I think that that money would be better used here, where it belongs, wouldn't you? I can go on and on about Obama and reasons not to vote for him but, I'd exceed 250 words by far. You spoke of "change", what "change" are you speaking about? It's apparent you're refering to skin color and that's sad. By the way, Obama isn't "black", he's bi-racial. His heritage is mainly Muslim, Caucation and then African. If in doubt, google it.

It's funny how folks looks at nationality or heritage of people that has fame or money. Sen. Obama isn't black or Tiger Woods isn't black and so on. If you take Sen. Obama off the Presidential trail, take his millions of dollars out of the bank, put him on a job paying $8.00/hr, the only thing you will see then is a black man (if you see him at all). Do the same for Tiger, take the golf clubs out his hand, I know what you'll see, a black man (google that).

Well the hard working people at the school have had their pay cut.  Some were cut 5 days in pay, others less depending on their job.  They were told that they would not get to basic travel expense; if you have to travel from one school to another during the day then you are screwed, you pay for it out of your pocket.

But rest assured the school board is still collecting their pay and their travel expenses.  And they made sure the little chubby guy still gets to drive the new pickup home, to the lunch he never misses. To his little side jobs during the day.  Could it be due to the fact that he sends the maintenance workers to the school board member’s house to do the repair work they need?

And has anyone see the buses getting painted at the body shop?  Could it be that it was said, “Fix my car cheep, and I will get you some extra business that you can make it up on”?

When will people wake up and get rid of the crooks and start letting the teachers teach.

OK. The School District is making major cuts. The best experienced administrators, teachers, and staff are being given their walking papers, so to speak. New inexperienced people will be brought in at lower pay rates. Existing staff are having their pay cut and then given more responsibility. There goes the school district! I've got an idea...don't pay Crenshaw for the roughly 4 hours per day that she spends at her home during the workday. That should help some. Folks, we are heading down the toilet just like the other districts she has commanded. I hope the new school board will dismiss her and Mrs. HR. And another thing Dr. Crenshaw...it would be nice for you to acknowledge the regular people at STHS games, not just the political ones. You seem uncomfortable sitting with the regular folks, but it would be hard sitting in proximity of the former Superintendent who did a great job and makes you look like an idiot.

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who's hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our president.

The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a 'Post Turtle''.
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was. The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road on you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'.

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. 'You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, and he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with'.

He has to explain his votes because morons like you keep trying to deceive people.  I assume this is the same Aiken Board of Realtors that just recently endorsed Sen. Massey because he "has real estate as one of his interests."  http://www.aikenstandard.com/Local/1016Endorse

Interestingly enough, I (and about 150 other local realtors) was at the Aiken realtors meeting a couple months ago when Sen. Massey spoke at length and very candidly about the "point of sale" bill, and it became quite evident that he knew more about the impact of that bill than we realtors did.  Amazing, isn't it?  The guy actually took the time to read the legislation and consider the consequences BEFORE it was passed.  By the way, that bill would have absolutely no effect whatsoever on your property taxes unles you're buying and selling houses frequently.  But it sure would have tricked new homebuyers by jumping up their taxes in 2 years and not telling them about it until it was too late.  The truth is, we ought to thank Sen. Massey for standing up to the lobbyists who were pushing a bad bill and instead demanded something better.

Look, y'all can throw this "nice kid" stuff around and try to make people think he has no substance, but anybody who actually listens to this guy talk about the issues can figure out that he really pays attention and works hard.  You may not agree with him on everything, but this "nice kid" is actually a pretty sharp guy.

Just a note to Mr. Bibbs on the school board. Hazardous school bus routes do not involve the collection of hazardous materials.  You might want to 1) know what is being discussed before speaking, and 2) think about what it is you are going to say before you say it out loud.  Also, who decides his rate of pay after being late and missing 3/4 of the meeting?

Ms. Mary Alice Jackson appears to be a very nice lady.  But why is she there other than to collect a check?  She never speaks unless it is to second a motion.  Let's get someone in her place that has some thoughts and input as to how to make the district better.

Viola Jackson on the other hand asks very good questions and actually has good input on decisions that are being made.  She seems genuinely concerned about the students in the district.

I wish Mr. Franklin would have been there last night.  I would really like to know what he thinks he can bring to the table that Brad Covar does not already bring.

I wish Mr. Collier much luck.
