Re: "The biggist problem with kids today is teachers arent doing theri job teaching them right from wrong."

I suspect I now know who the kid who was arrested is, Your son.   Let's look at some history.  I started school in 1963 at the age of 6.  No kinder garden, no pre-school, no 4year old kinder garden.  The reason for the change is very simple, back then parents were interested in their kids, today, these so-called adults are more interested in drinking wine, smoking dope and getting high.  They can do this because they sit on their rear and collect a government check.

Has any of you thought what will happen when you get so stupid that you can do nothing but collect that check, and then the government says, "NO"

Editor's note: Those in government work hard to enslave more people to the government dole each year. That is why they want - to make people dependent on them for food, housing, health care, and the list goes on. That makes them powerful and the enslaved weak. Self-sufficient people are individuals and are the enemy of liberal Democrats and big government. They don't need government to survive.

What is wrong with the judges around here? Does anyone have any guts to uphold the law? First all the freebies dished out by Judge Easy and now Judge Parkman letting off a shooter on PR bond? Does anyone else see something wrong with the system here in the county? No wonder it's steadily going downhill.

Why do i get the feeling the 16 y.o. kid that shot the guy has connections in Edgefield County?

Where are the parents??? I thought it was their job to raise THEIR kids...It sure seems like they don't mind having the fun to get them here but they sure don't take care of them once the fun is over!!!   Teachers aren't supposed to RAISE your kids...just EDUCATE them (and that would be a lot eaiser if the parents cared)!!!  By the way I'm not a teacher!!! I just feel sorry for them because of what they have to put up with these days.

we bought our house approximately 6 years ago, and from day 1 we have had problems with water and sewage.  the water problem was corrected after about 2 1/2 years, but the sewage is an ongoing problem that apparently can't be fixed.  about a year ago we recieved notice on our water bill, that rates were going up to improve the sewage lines in edgefield.  i was told today that  the improvements mentioned were, to improve the main trunck lines, in town.  we live in town, and our sewage has been backing up into our home, on average of 2 to 3 times a year.  everyone with the water company that comes out knows exactly where the problem is, so why can't they just fix it?  We replaced our water and sewage lines completly within the 1st year of buying our home because we were told the problem was in our lines.  it wasn't!  i just want it to be fixed!  we at this point have raw sewage in our yard at the road, that when i attempted to call them back to get them to at least put lime on it, they did not return my call.  maybe just mentioning it here will give some incentive to fix the problem.  i can't be the only one with the problem!!!  thanks for letting me blow off a little steam.

Oookay…Well, now we know what your excuse will be when your child is arrested in the future.  Children learn from the examples that their family members set well before they are enrolled in school.  Have you ever heard the expression, “Children learn what they live?”  Our primary “job” as teachers is to teach academic skills to children, but thanks to parents (if indeed you are a parent) like you, we spend much time teaching social skills, conflict resolution, and remedial academic skills (from which you might benefit.  Adult Education services are available; for more information, you may call Edgefield County Adult Education at 803-275-1788).  If a parent does not accept responsibility (and the responsibility for a child’s upbringing should lie with those responsible for bringing that child into the world), of course their child will not learn to accept responsibility, either.  If a teacher were to correct your child, odds are that you would complain about it!

First of all, your grammar and spelling was much better this time.

As for a grudge against the Fire Chief of CountyLine, he clearly stated his priorities; looking for the paranormal, riding his bike, and the fire department comes LAST (if he has time)…BOO!  On another note, it is hard to stand behind someone/something when you know everything is not on the up-and-up and there are unethical practices being allowed.  I do realize that this is a VOLUNTEER organization, but I can remember (not so long ago); there was always someone at the fire department.

As for no one being at Belvedere Station on HWY 25 (which is their station 2), you should check out their main station.  Someone is there 95% of the time.  And guess what…they are VOLUNTEERS also.  Are you trying to say that you are hanging out at your station 2?

To the poster blaming teachers for not teaching kids right from wrong--

You are way out of line with this comment! Teaching kids right from wrong begins at home with the parent(s).  If any child has not been taught the basics of right and wrong before they start to school, they are basically little animals by this time. No teacher should be expected to do what a parent has neglected, or continues to neglect,  to do. A teacher's job is to educate in the studies so that those that want to succeed can do so.  Of course, they build on teaching social skills, but this is not their primary job.  I am not an educator, but I certainly have sympathy for those teachers who have to deal with children who come from homes with your attitude.

By the way,  maybe you should have paid more attention when you were/are in class.  Out of 17 little words, you had 3 with incorrect spelling or punctuation!
web posted December 31, 2008

Obviously, the biggest problem your teachers faced was teaching you proper spelling.  Morals aren't listed anywhere in the the SC state standards that teachers are required to teach.  That is the job of the PARENTS you moron.  If parents were doing THEIR job, the job of the teachers would be much easier and valuable classroom instructional time would not be lost dealing with disrespectful children.  I once had a fifth grader tell me that she didn't have to say 'ma'am' to me because her grandmother told her she didn't have to.  These are the types of situations that teachers deal with on a daily basis.  You need to spend a day in the public school system and get an idea of what a difficult job teachers have.  I bet you wouldn't last until lunchtime.

RE: The biggist problem with kids today is teachers arent doing theri job teaching them right from wrong.

NO!! It is the PARENTS job to teach them right from wrong! The teachers have absolutely NO say so in the matter, they cannot discipline them. If the do try to correct their behavior they get corrected by the parent of a "perfect child". I'm sick and tired of these sorry piece of crap parents that can't take responsibility for their actions or their kids. Stand up, Grow up and discipline. Please bring back punishment in the schools!!!!!!!!

I could not agree more about the rising costs of a college education. I thought Wardlaw was expensive but even the state supported schools are getting out of reach.Do not expect any help from Senator Massey. I checked and he voted to cut funding for colleges which means that tuition will have to continue to rise. This is the first time that I have written to daily but I have to agree with some of the earlier comments that Senator Massey is not going to change a thing in Columbia. I am not a democrat or a republican so I don't want to get involved in that argument. I just know that Massey is not all that he said he was going to be. He is too young to understand and not from here so there is no way he can appreciate our problems. Nothing against him personally but I think everybody realizes what I am saying.

By the way, if I still have some space left, I really appreciate your site. I don't know how you do it but speaking for one who is concerned about our community, I appreciate all your hard work and sleepless nights. Thanks from all your readers and I hope that you and your wife has a safe and happy new year.

Editor's note: Not to take sides, but I believe most representatives voted to approve the budget cuts due to falling revenues. The cuts affected all funding from the state including towns, counties, and schools. Be prepared, more cuts are likely after the January session. Thank you for your kind comments and for reading.

RE: E-Citizen......

May it be? While you are in commute to and from your JOB, so are the VOLUNTEERS from their place of employment? It's not a paid position. When you pass by Belvedere Fire Dept. next to Gregs Gas Plus, how many vehicles do you see parked out there(not including the car lot next door)? Very seldom any, correct? As with most.... wait here it is again.... VOLUNTEER!!! departments, you won't find anyone "manning" the station during normal business hours, or while you are commuting to and from work. The only disgrace to this community I see here are the people that won't stand behind the CLVFD because they have a grudge against the Fire Chief. I would like to know how someone could write in about Mr. Rodgers dying in the Wandering minds when the story did not show up until Monday?

Editor's note: The story on Tom Rodgers' death was published on Saturday, December 27, shortly after EdgefieldDaily.com learned of his passing on Christmas Day. The story was placed at the top of the Headlines again on Monday.
web posted December 30, 2008

Sorry, but I feel the need to disagree with the person who wrote "shame on the NWTF" for not listing the obituary of Tom Rodgers on their website.  First off, unlike most company websites, the NWTF staff is responsible for the upkeep and content of its website.  With Mr. Rodgers passing away on Christmas day there was no way that any employees would be available to update the site.  Secondly, the vast majority of employees in the NWTF's communications department moved to Edgefield from other parts of the country.  The Federation does a wonderful job of allowing those employees to make the trip home in order to spend the Holidays with their families.  Again, creating a situation that would leave the staff short handed.

This past summer the Federation honored Mr. Rodgers for his role in the founding of this wonderful organization.  Tom was a great man of vision who no doubt felt a tremendous amount of pride at watching his idea become the second largest conservation organization in our country.

When do the new county council members take over?

Editor's note: The newly elected members; Rodney Ashcraft and Genia Blackwell, take office on January 6, 2009. Two new members is not a "take over" of the county council since there are five members. The 2010 election could be pivotal as off year elections generally see lower voter turnout and one or more of the long term incumbents could be unseated. As I understand two of the three sitting tenured members will be challenged in 2010.
web posted December 30, 2008

It was a shock to learn that Tom Rodgers died this week. As a member of the NWTF I was more surprised to learn about his death from Edgefield Daily rather than the NWTF. I checked the (NWTF) website on Sunday and they still didn't have anything. Kudos to Edgefield Daily and shame on the NWTF.

I am a student a STHS and I am trying to help raise money for extracurricular activities at the school.  This past summer I was at Furman University and involved in the Emerging Public Leaders program. Only seventeen students were selected to participate in this program from around the US and when we left Furman we were all set with a task of accomplishing a service project in our communities. The service project that I have come up with is to have a carnival at the school to help raise money for extracurricular activities. I know that as the budget cut begins to get deeper and deeper these activities are the ones that can be hanging by a string, but in my efforts I hope to make sure that this does not happen. I have started up a committee of students that are helping me get this event rolling, but I can use all the help I can get.  If there is anyone in the community that would like to help me out or even give us a donation towards our efforts, it would be greatly appreciated. We can use any sort of donations. I am opened to suggestions and ideas that anyone may have. If you would like to get in touch with me, you can call me at 803-334-8247 and I can give you more details into what we want to accomplish. Thank you very much!!!! Sean Robins

As a mom with 3 in college, the constant increase in tuition has hit me extremley hard. I recieved a letter from a public uiniversity in SC stating that once again, they were facing huge budget cuts. The funding for public universities has gone from 40%  to less than 18%.within the past 5 years. These kids are the future leaders of our state; and yet we continue to push more and more  away from a college education. Only the rich will be able to afford a 4 yr public university degree from SC. That is absolutely appalling! I am to the point now, where I may have to force one child to drop out so I can pay for the others, its that BAD. a 11% increase last year wiped out what I had left. I have sold my home, car, and used up savings to send my kids to college. They worked hard and earned their way into college, only to have budget cuts eat up their scholarship money. Life scholarships are a joke, with the 11% increase in tuition I had to pay out over$2000.even WITH student loans. when will our state government finally put the kids of South Carolina FIRST? When will the raping of our education system finally end? Senator Massey what will YOU do to stop the constant cuts from Education, so ALL students are created equal?Who will stand up for the kids of our state? If something is not done now, there will be no public universities for our kids to attend.

First thing is first. This whole deal about County Line Fire Department is a disgrace to the community and its people, but those on the fire department could care less about that since this really isn't their community. Im sure if there was a fire in Aiken County they would love to go to it. On other notes, why is it that the chief is using his position on the fire department for personal gain rather to serve this community. Im a concerned citizen who just doesnt understand why Edgefield County has yet to react to County Line Fire Department. My item on the list is why is it that whenever I drive by the fire department no one is EVER there. I have to pass it on the way to work every day and coming home from work and no one is there.

Hello Mr. Editor,
Do you know which public official is “responsible” for rental of the gym on Church Street in Edgefield?  I would like to know who approves the decision to rent the facility for loud, late night events.  Also, do you know who I could contact to inquire about how noise ordinance rules/laws apply to events held at that gym?  It’s after midnight and the music continues to pound through my home nearly two blocks away.  On most days, this is a very quiet neighborhood filled with churches and children.  That all changes each time the approving stroke of a city official’s pen transforms this sleepy residential neighborhood into a late-night party zone.

Editor's note: According to the newly passed noise ordinance in the town, loud music or sounds from a party would have to subside by midnight on the weekends (excluding Sunday which would be 11 pm).

I believe anyone can rent the gym as long as it is not reserved for that date. Please check with the Edgefield Town Hall (803-637-4014) or email
townofedgefield@bellsouth.net  for more information.

So FCHS had all the windows busted out again and the BOD (Board of Directors) still wont put cameras up. OK, then maybe they should put up the money to make all the repairs instead of it being just another reason to come to us for more money. I'm done and our children will be leaving and going to Thurmond come first of the year. I've lost count of how many times this has happened over the last 2 years.

Editor's note: Without question Fox Creek Charter High School is the most vandalized location in the county on a regular basis. I thought insurance covered the damages.

As a retired firefighter/EMT, we were trained to show no emotions while on an emergency scene. If you start showing emotions, how will that make your patient feel? You show your emotions after leaving the scene, not while on scene.
re: "correct grammar and spelling lesson". I do not know anyone from the CLVFD, but I never knew that kowing correct grammar and spelling were part of saving lives and firefighting. GOD forbid if you or one of your family ever need CPR or house catches on fire. Maybe, the first question you should the volunteer is, do you know your ABC's? Mr. Editor. You said that you were involved in an accident that somebody died but you aren't afford to have "emotions". IF you are telling the truth (and I doubt it) how could you go to a wreck where somebody dies and not have "emotions"? Admit it, you love it when somebody dies and you get to roll in the glory of reporting it.

Editor's note: First off let me say Merry Christmas and thank you for your ill-timed comment. I never take "glory" in reporting the death of anyone, I do it with a heavy heart.

On Oct. 28, 1988, our fifth wedding anniversary, 70-year-old Margaret Brown Kelly, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, ran out of the “suicide lane” on Washington Road into traffic and was struck and killed by the truck I was driving that evening on our way to celebrate our anniversary. My wife, who was pregnant at the time with our second child, was rushed to Doctor’s Hospital. Though found to be not at fault in the death, I remember it every day of my life and still have nightmares. Thank you for making it more present in my memory during this time of year.

I have a job to do and part of that is to report the good, bad, and indifferent in a factual and unbiased manner. As such I am not afforded the luxury of placing my personal emotions into a news report as that would cloud the integrity of the facts.

That does not mean I do not deal with the emotional aspects of seeing, first hand, the death of so many. I deal with the emotional aspects in my personal time and in a very personal way.

Merry Christmas.

I have a few questions about the renting of the town gym.   How much does the town make off renting out the gym?  Who determines who it is rented to?  What is the process?  Is there any followup after a person or group rents it and then violence erupts?  Does that person or group get to rent the gym ever again?  If the town starts making the official "renter" responsible for the people at their event then maybe the bad "renters" will find somewhere else to go.  The last thing I want to see is the riffraff from "The Center" renting out the gym every weekend.  It just might be time for some changes around town concerning the town gym.

Now that we have had a grammar and spelling lesson, let’s get down to the REAL issue of criticism.   WHY did you take offense to the comment that was posted?  I just stated that “If County Line Fire Department had advertised they were having a car wash then maybe the community would have had a chance to show their support.”  Maybe this person thought that it was a REAL fund raiser and would have participated if he/she and the community knew about it.  DON’T be so defensive!!!!

As a community, we pay taxes and would like to see our money being used for the right reasons.  IF (big if) you did donate/spend YOUR money on the supplies to wash YOUR personal vehicle, did you also donate/spend your money on the water that was used or did you haul it in gallon jugs from your house?  If you have time to wash your personal vehicle, why don’t you take time to wash the fire trucks?

NEXT ISSUE?????

I just want to comment on the "red shirts black shirts" thing at the (Edgefield) town gym. Why not just come out and say it's gangs? What i want to know is why the town let the gym get rented to people that used to have their gang parties at the center before it was closed? The town aint doing nothing to stop the gang fights they just move around where its happening. Why not arrest the gang members when they walk around town in the gang colors? It aint like they hide it i see them everyday so if the cops have to see them too!!!! This is BS. Where the (heck) is our wonderful mayor on all this?

Does anybody know what is happening with the court hearings or lawsuits at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church?   It was announced over the radio that their preacher was ill and had surgery.

Editor's note: Dr. George Brightharp has undergone surgery recently but I have no information as to why or the outcome. I know motions have been filed in the ongoing case but I have not seen a recent ruling on the matter. It is a shame that a house of the Lord has to be brought into the court system and as such dividing a church. God does not divide a church, man does. The whole sordid affair should have never happened. Any respectable man of God would have walked away rather than divide His house. Dr. Brightharp's actions have caused me to lose all respect for him.

I can't believe the people of this community who scrutinize the Fire Departments and it's members. Do they not understand that they volunteer there time, their money, their life. As a note, most firefighters spend anywhere from 40 hours to 400 hours training, in which they don't get paid for. These people who VOLUNTEER!, have jobs that they work to pay their bills. They are just like you and me in that aspect..... EXCEPT, they do all of the above. So what if a member washes his/hers personal vehicle. Guess what! Those supplies were probably donated by one of the members! I don't here you complaining about them using their supplies for cleaning the Fire Dept. vehicles, or station. All I hear from you is complaining about what you won't or can't do. How about a little respect for the men and women that put their lifes on the line, and their families on the back burner for  YOUR life and YOUR family. Just remember this long heard phrase. Light travels faster than sound..... You look bright, untill you open your mouth and speak.

A statement offered by Gov. Mark Sanford: "This time of year offers each of us a chance like no other to refocus on what is really important in life - things like spending time with friends and family, and giving to others. There are some profound needs that exist in our state, and I'd urge every South Carolinian who is able to do what they can in making someone else's holiday season a little brighter. Carrying that spirit through the Christmas season and into the New Year will go a long way toward creating a better South Carolina. So on behalf of Jenny, the boys and me, I want to wish every single South Carolinian Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and many blessings in the year to come."

The family and friends of Kevin Brown as well as the young man driving the other truck will be in my prayers.  This is so sad, especially at a time of year that's supposed to be filled with joy.

Editor's note: Thank you, and thank you most of all for your prayers for the Brown family and the other driver.
web posted December 24, 2008

I am confused.  The story first states that one driver was found uninjured and the other deceased ..... then this statement is contraindicated by stating the driver of the Chevy was suffering from ONLY minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

Did the word "ONLY" have to be in inserted in the sentence?  Simply "minor injuries" would have sufficed.  I simply cannot believe that this driver was suffering "ONLY" from minor injuries.  Let's face it  -  the driver was in a automobile accident in which another human being was killed - I am quite sure the driver's injuries go much farther than "ONLY"  minor physical ones.

If it had been me that had been the driver who survived - devastation is the only word that comes to mind.  Furthermore, if I had then read your article, I would have been truly hurt and offended by your reporting.   I sincerely hope the survivor in the accident does not read your article.  Please ask your reporters to be more careful with their words.  It is amazing how one word can make a story and the people in them seem rather callous.

Sincerely,
An avid reader, writer, and concerned citizen

Editor's note: I covered that story personally and the fact that the second driver suffered from a bloody nose considering the devastating impact was remarkable. As one who has been involved as a driver in a traffic fatality, be assured I do not take the mental aspects of the surviving party of a fatality lightly. However, that has no place in reporting the facts of the incident in question. When reporting the tragic death of a young man (or woman), even when it is a friend or a friend of one of my own children, I am not afforded the luxury of emotions when reporting the news.

I am sorry if you were offended by the word "only".

This is the very reason I am glad Edgefielddaily is here.  You provide a forum for the county citizens to express themselves without fear of retribution.  I am glad this person gave you the opportunity to tell it like it is. If others "told it like it is" in Edgefield County you could write a book. No wonder the council and other county leaders don't like your publication. Re:  Genia Blackwell's 20 years experience.....

Boy I can't wait to learn all about your publication.  It should be titled "comics in Edgefield County".  First, you didn't get her credentials right, second your lack of knowledge regarding what an administrative assistant does is showing.  Administrative assistants are usually the back bone of a company.  They do all the leg work for those who make decisions and most times perform those duties for which the "bosses" are greatly rewarded.  So if you are a publication, you are performing poorly at best.   Serious publications research their information before commenting.  Your comments show you open your mouth long before your brain is in gear.  Keep it coming, we can all use a good laugh in these economic times.
web posted December 23, 2008

Was the $425 verdict money you received in your lawsuit against the Building Inspector seed money for Edgefielddaily? From local sources there is a different story about how the lock was broken on the gate to your domicile. I've heard from many sources, locally (I live in Wisconsin), that you allegedly, notice I said allegedly, have some real mental issues.

Editor's note:
Thank you for your comment. Legally I have to refrain from comment on this subject, until it is brought up. Edgefield County Building and Planning Director Charles “Jack” Jenkins, supported by then County Administrator Wayne Adams, physically attacked me at a public meeting. Though Chief Magistrate Davis Parkman, County Administrator Wayne Adams, and then Edgefield Mayor John Pettigrew, tried to circumvent the arrest of Mr. Jenkins, justice prevailed.

On the day of court I was blindsided and was forced to act as the prosecuting agency, rather than the EPD, who investigated and swore to the warrant for Jenkins arrest.

North Augusta Judge and lawyer Tom Murphy, who represented Building and Planning Director Charles “Jack” Jenkins in the case, got his hat handed to him by my handling of the case and a jury found Jenkins guilty and he had to pay a $425 fine after being found guilty by a jury in the criminal trial. The state got that money, not me.

However, I did sue the county in civil court and that case was settled out of court for an “undisclosed” amount of money. (It's kind of hard to refute a case when your client has already been found guilty in a criminal case).

But, according to court records, then Mayor of Edgefield (now County Administrator) John Pettigrew reportedly gave false information to police in an effort to stop the investigation. Furthermore, according to court records, Mr. Pettigrew and Judge Davis Parkman both stated that if the police would just ignore the claim it would, “go away”. In my opinion they impeded a police investigation of a violent crime.

They were wrong and I won.

In my opinion they both should have been brought up on charges of judicial misconduct as well as then Sheriff Billy Parker who, according to sworn testimony, refused to allow Jenkins to be fingerprinted and his record recorded by SLED so that Jenkins would have no criminal record when convicted.

This claim was later supported by a report by The Citizen News after they checked the arrest record.

These are not my claims; this is the testimony of the official court records and testimony from the Edgefield Chief of Police at the time. I am just reporting what is already in the official court records.

Again, what is the name of your “publication”? Why is your IP address ithe same as “others” who send in similar comments so critical of me? How is that possible unless you are all using the same computer?

Oh, and your IP address proves you are a liar, you don't live in Wisconsin. Lie to someone who has less brains than a cucumber, not me. Thank you for opening a door that has long remained closed.

I will be happy to go deeper into this subject if you want to ask more questions.

I'd love to know what publication intents to scrutinize & look into the personal lives of our new council member (Genia Blackwell). Where the heck have you been? If you have attended past council meetings, you must have been asleep. I do not personally know Mrs. Blackwell but I have high expectations in her ability to know what comes in (revenue) and what goes out (expenses) & seek ways to improve both to benefit the whole county not just certain areas. Government moves slow but there are ways to work together to accomplish much.

It will be very telling to us all if the current government and those who work for it assist our new council members or if protection of business as usual hinders their efforts.  We the people will be doing our own observance and scrutinizing what takes place.  I'm sure it must be scary to know someone is coming in with intelligence, experience and a willingness to actually perform a service for this county's citizens.  The Edgefield County citizens will be watching to see if the incumbent council members follow her example or if they will "close ranks".  Remember citizens, you vote again in two years, so watch carefully.  We must not accept business as usual from our elected officials.  I for one cannot wait to see where we are in two years.

Will your wife hit the ground running when she starts her political career? What big changes are coming to county government when she hits the stage. She is going to find out real fast that the wheels of public service turn a lot slower than the private sector. The cogs of public service need a lot more oil and maintenance. The scrutiny is about to begin. My publiccation will be at every meeting, scrutinizing every move, and looking deeper into the personal lives of the Reverend RB and his bride. Hypocrisy is in us all, but it will shine harder on those who bloviate, and you are the Bloviate Master.

I read today that oil was down where it was five years ago when gas was around a $1 a gallon. What gives? When oil goes up a $1 the prices goes up the same day. But when it goes down  they take a week or more to lower prices and even then they only go down a few pennies.

Re: Obama has appointed the most liberal people to his cabinet

Robert Gates is a liberal. Jim Jones is a liberal. At least he has appointed qualified people. What persons from the South do you think he should appoint to cabinet positions. If they are from the South and left-leaning would that be better.

Re: Name one "centrist" move Obama has suggested
1) Obama criticized the U.S. Supreme Court for ruling child rapists couldn't be executed.
2)  Obama did not oppose a decision overturning a gun ban.
3) Obama supports faith-based social work.
4) Obama voted for a bill that would immunize telephone companies from lawsuits that allowed warrantless eavesdropping of their customers.
5) Appointed Robert Gates Sec. of Defense, because he wanted the opinion of an "expert" in dealing with the end of Bush's war.

Editor's note: Thank you for proving my point. According to you "liberals" are qualified people" and conservatives are not.
As for your last five points.
1) Obama has criticized the SCOTUS because it did not allow the "redistribution of wealth" too and has said the Constitution is "flawed". And he gets to appoint at least two new judges to the court. Humm.. I wonder what leaning they will be of, follow the constitution or leaning towards changing it?
2) Obama suppoted the ban. Who cares that he did not "oppose" the decision? (nice try at spin)
3) Show me.
4) Obama opposed the wire taps.
5) Gates supports Obama's desire for a "civilian army" that is just as well funded as the US Military. Why do we need two again?

Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning the 2008 Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Democrats: 20; Republicans: 30

Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000; Republicans: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million; Republicans: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2; Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in rented or government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

Modern Parable.

A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company (Ford Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 7 people steering and 2 people rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order; American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 2 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 2 people rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rowers. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses. The pension program was trimmed to 'equal the competition' and some of the resultant savings were channeled into morale boosting programs and teamwork posters.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid-off one rower, halted development of a new canoe, sold all the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses.

The next year, try as he might, the lone designated rower was unable to even finish the race (having no paddles,) so he was laid off for unacceptable performance, all canoe equipment was sold and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India .

Sadly, the End.

Here's something else to think about: Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US, claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

TOYOTA has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US . The last quarter's results: TOYOTA makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.

Ford folks are still scratching their heads, and collecting bonuses... and now wants the Government to 'bail them out'.

Editor's note: The difference? Unions. Ford has them, Toyota does not.

I write in so you will light up another cigarette and that will be one more nail in your coffin. You should buy stock in Phillip Morris if you are going to light one up right after another.

Editor's note: Speaking of smoking, what are you smoking to not see that Obama is naming most of the former Clinton Cabinet to power, including Hillary Clinton? On top of that Steven Chu being named as energy secretary is putting a guy in charge of energy that has said the US should pay gas prices higher than those in Europe. Now there is a guy I want making policy decisions for the US (real centrist). Oh, did I forget to mention he said coal was his "worst enemy"? I can see why Obama chose him since Obama said he wanted to bankrupt the coal industry in the US. An incoming president saying he wants to bankrupt an entire industry (that will also raise the cost of electricity ten fold) in the midst of a economic downward slide is about as bright as wanting to increase taxes (oh, I forgot, Obama wants to do that too). Don't forget Obama wants to let the across the board tax cuts expire (another "centrist" move) raising taxes on everyone.

Obama has also said he wants to implement a trillion dollars in spending. (Yeah, that's "right wing") while the economy is going in the tank because of Democrats forced the banking industry to make loans to people on welfare for houses they can't afford and caused the failure of banks. (Right-wing stuff there too).

Obama has appointed the most liberal people to his cabinet, excluded anyone from the south, and his plans (though vague because he has yet to be specific on anything) are designed to bring our country to its fiscal knees.

By the way, how's his Democrat buddies in Chicago doing in that corruption thing? Of course, the very people he was so close to all of a sudden are "distant acquaintances".  The same way his radical racist preacher of 20 years "Rev" Wright, terrorist Bill Ayers, and convicted corruption king Tony Rezco just don't matter.

Oh, by the way, since you worry about accusations of Obama being an "immigrant", his own appointment to Sec. of Commerce Gov. Bill Richardson said Obama was "an immigrant" and would be looking out for other "immigrants".

Yeah, nothing left-wing coming from Obama. I'd rather smoke a cigarette than your crack pipe of Marxism.

Name one "centrist" move Obama has suggested.

I wish the parents of Edgefield county would wake up and realize what is happening in the school system. Faculty morale has reached an all time record low.  Decisions are being made that affect the lives and education of your children.  And unfortunately, the decisions being made horrible.  Teacher positions are being cut, and Crenshaw has made it known that rehiring is not an option.  What happened to her statements "Everyone can be replaced" and "We can replace these teachers with young, fresh, new teachers that can be paid less"?  Unfortunately, these statements were LIES!!!  I was told the math and science departments at STHS will be short several(2/3) teachers.  What does this mean for parents and their children?  Larger class sizes(26-30+ in a class), poor grades, lower
test scores, and an increase in discipline problems.   PARENTS WAKE UP.....CRENSHAW IS DESTROYING YOUR SCHOOL SYSTEM!

Dear Editor: Why don't you apply for a grant from ECSB and the Regional Development Board?  You and your Daily do far more to promote the community than the lobbyists do.

Editor's note: I guess that would be bass ackwards as Bettis' initials are BR and mine are RB. That and the fact that those who are in positions of power do not work for or depend on "RB" for their employment but do work for "BR" in one fashion or another. Not that that has any undue influence on their support of his agenda.

I still can't figure out why we have to pay Bettis Rainsford to lobby our own state representatives with tax money when we pay them with tax money to promote our agendas already? The county has already signed on and given $5,000 (foolishly) to Bettis to promote his scheme, why does the cash strapped School Board need to do the same redundantly? I think its time for Bettis to show other county's are on board before he starts swiping money from our schools for his idea. Not one of our legislative delegation has gone on record supporting the measure and has said it can pass the muster in the state congress. I think they are the ones we need to listen to, not Bettis Rainsford who has no control over how legislation is progressed. I hate to tell Bettis, but Strom Thurmond is dead and so is his influence.

What is Bettis Rainsford thinking? We already have to cut 4 more percent from our already bare bones budget. Where does he think we are going to get 5,000 dollars? Oh, I know, we are just going to pull it out of our yang-yang. If our school board is stupid enough to give Bettis what he is asking for, then they deserve what they get. What comes around, goes around. Sister Sally and the Motown 4 better wake up and smell the coffee. . . Our school district is going to lose a lot of good teachers, if things keep getting worse. Everything is coming down the the almighty dollar. What about the quality education of our children? I guess that doesn't matter anymore. How can teachers expect to face budget cuts, supply cuts, threat of job cuts etc. and be expected to continue to provide a quality education? From what I understand, they are under an extreme amount of stress and worry. Yet, they are expected to perform. Our school board better get with the program.

Editor's note: Yes, some of that is true. Zeb Blackledge, of Edgefield, was arrested in North Augusta for a robbery of a store on Edgefield Road in Aiken County. As I understand no weapon was used and the charges are expected to be reduced to a misdemeanor of theft by taking. According to my information Edgefield County had nothing to do with the arrest.

You know the one who wrote the letter saying he was leaving on his own and he was not being forced out. No you are not prejudice. You just report things that suit your agenda of trying to divide this county. You can try to run from your high school days but you cannot hide.

Editor's note: I will report on Edgefield First Baptist when their disputes hit the court system as Mt. Canaan did. No one at EFB has been arrested, charged, or filed a lawsuit. And what the heck does my being in high school have to do with a church (or churches) I have never attended and the news?

What is up with Obama's education secretary?

"Barack Obama this morning is set to name the chief of the Chicago school system as his secretary of education, one of the final picks of his cabinet.
In a press conference at a Chicago school this morning, the president-elect is to announce his pick of Arne Duncan, a friend and basketball partner, to head the US department of education. The education directs billions in federal education dollars to states and school districts around the country, and can be enormously influential in setting national education policy and standards.

Duncan, 44, is a Chicago native who was raised in Hyde Park, the neighbourhood that Obama made his home. He sparked controversy this fall by proposing the Chicago school system open a gay-friendly high school."

How on earth does leadership of a failed school system, a talent at basketball, and growing up in a neighborhood that claims Louis Farrakhan and other terrorists as residents, qualify this man for a Cabinet post?  Why doesn't the American media make a big deal about this?

In reference to Bettis Rainsford's request for $5000.00 lobbying money at our last school board meeting, one of our board members said he did not want to make the same mistake the school board made when they did not take part in an equitable funding lawsuit.  He said that the school district did not get any money because they did not participate.  I am no lawyer or politician(thank goodness), but it is my understanding that this time we are talking about the state legislature passing a law.  If that is the case, if the law is passed that Mr. Rainsford is touting, all counties will enjoy the benefits.  It does not matter if we help pay for a lobbyist or not.  This is just another example of how some on our school board are not capable of putting a complete and reasonable thought together.  Please contact your school board member and tell them we do not need to be spending $5000.00 for a lobbyist at this time.  I am sure some of that money will end up in Mr. Rainsford's pocket.  He is following the same pattern he always does.  He makes a great sales pitch for money and makes it appear to be so urgent.  That way he tries to fly in under the radar and have the money before anyone can think about it or object.

Editor's note: According to Mr. Rainsford, a "non-profit" is going to be chartered to begin the process of the lobbying though none has been chartered at this time. In any regard, the simple fact that he is using public funds makes the accounting public. I'm still having problems understanding how government can fund a lobbyist to lobby government with taxpayer funds.

I hope everyone will attend the called meeting of the school board Wed night. PLEASE come out to speak out against them giving Mr. Rainsford ANY money.  We can't afford soap, paper for the copiers, and other necessary things for our schools. That $5000 would buy a lot of school supplies!!!!! The money the school board has is tax money paid to educate OUR KIDS not Mr. Rainsford!!!!

Editor's note:  Be advised, the School Board policy is that you must contact the District Office one week prior to the meeting to be able to speak during the public comments portion of the meeting even though the meeting was just announced. That policy, in my opinion, needs to change. I'm not sure it would stand a legal challenge. The agendas for regular meetings are not produced until the Thursday before the meetings and one would have to have ESP in order to know on the Tuesday prior that there is something on the agenda you would wish to speak about.

By the policy, it seems the BOE is aggressively seeking to squelch public input at the meetings. I can see limiting the time allowed for a speaker, but not limiting the ability of a taxpayer to speak.

After 9 years of dealing with the Edgefield aristocracy, the final straw may have come today.  While picking up my children from school I noticed that my 11 year old girl was upset.  Upon inquiring what the problem was, she informed me that her music teacher told the entire class that there's no such thing as Santa Claus.  Please be aware that I pay my taxes and depend on the wonderful teachers of W.E. Parker to guide and instruct my children in reading, writing, arithmetic and music.  And for the most part I'm totally satisfied with the education that they're receiving.  But as God as my witness, I can't imagine what this person was thinking.  What part of music theory did this cover?  Were harmony parts supposed to have been tighter based on the fact that the children now know that Santa doesn't exist?  Wait, I know, maybe the kids were doing a blues number and the teacher thought that she could evoke some type of emotion from the kids once they heard the sad news.

I understand that often a teacher needs to "parent" a student.  This is not the case for an entire class.  Please teach the classes and allow me to parent my children.

Mr. Editor; The motel / hotel tax that is being passed by Johnston has me puzzled and I was hoping you might be able to clear up a question I have. Is this a tax just on hotels and motels or all "accommodations" like bed and breakfast or someone renting out a room in their house?

Editor's note: As I understand it is on all rented accommodations. The ordinance reads that it is 7% tax on the gross proceeds for short term rentals of a room or rooms as defined by SC law. I would think that would include a
bed and breakfast as they would be considered the same as a hotel, motel, lodge, or inn. I'm not too sure about someone renting out a room on a weekly basis. I would assume they would have to have a town business license to do so, and would then also be included.

Just how hard is it to produce the vaulted copy of the birth certificate if it is there? Everybody else has to do so to get a driver's license, and I presume he has one of those, so, what's the big deal? Why hide it? I agree that judge lee should be removed as a circuit court judge, but don't be surprised when your complaint falls on deaf ears. Judges answer to no one, once they are appointed they bascially have a free ride until they decide to retire. I have said for years that SC needs to amend the constitution to make judges elected. At least that way you have a way to get rid of them. Family court needs a complete overhaul. The cases are closed and on one except the people in the courtroom ever get to hear some of the shenanigans that goes on in those cases. For years we wrote to the state judiciary committee about a family court judge in Aiken County asking to be heard, about judges blatant refusal to follow guidelines and do what they wanted to do, instead of what was in the best interest.I've sat in familuy court in SC, GA, and NC.  The judges are elected and the courtrooms open  in GA and NC and none of the stuff that goes on inside family court in SC went on in those states. The judges know that they answer to the people and not the good ole boy lawyers that make up the majority of the state legislator. Its the good ol' boy system and its alive and well within SC court system. The judciary committee is a big a problem as the judges themselves. They probably like "easy lee" because she is keeping them out of the prison system and saving the tax payers money. If you can read, you can figure most things out but if you can't then you can drop out or turn to crime. I see this happening everywhere. I think punishmentof "reading a book" is the answer to some of the things happening today. Instead of placing a student on a pedestalbecause he can run fast or hit a ball is wrong. However if he makes it to the NFL or whatever, his crime can be bought off or swept under the rug as with most rich folks. Yes, the Clinton Admin did help start the trend to make it easier for people to buy a home; but, it was greed that caused many mortgage industry workers to take advantage of this easy money. I would love to know.  I can look back over the yearbooks and tell you how many dropped out, went back tried again and still did not make it..  I am pretty sure the drop out rate there is much higher than most high schools.  If anyone knows the answer to this please let us know.  I wish the mentor program was there from the beginning.  I also wish the guidance counselor knew how to assign classes that would give the proper amount of credits a student needs to graduate.  2007 there were aprox. 4 students that could not graduate due to not having enough credits from being assigned study hall instead of a class.  Same thing happened in 2008 to even more students.  Very sad situation.

How come gas prices are so different? I;'ve seen prices from .99 to $1.57. How is somebody not gauging on the down side? People always complain when prices go up but then when they go down and some stations keep the price high when they can lower it, isn't that illegal too?

Editor's note: It would seem that way, but some locations may not sell the gas they have in the ground as fast as others. Of course, there are those who could be keeping prices high to make more money but they will be forced to lower the prices as other businesses lower their prices (the free market system is the best system) . People will just drive past the store with the higher price forcing competition and the lowering of prices. The wholesale price of gas dropped 25 cents this week and that should be reflected at the pumps within days.

I have noted in my travels across the county that you can find gas in Johnston in the $1.30 range while other stations remain the the $1.40's and $1.50's range.

I read Mr. Rainsford's letter and your (column) and I can see points I agree with on both sides. I agree more with you that we should not have to use our tax money to pay our senators and congressmen to do what we pay them to do already. I think that is called a bribe. Bettis (Rainsford) has some gall to go to the school board and ask for money when they are cutting teachers and parents are sending in things like paper and other stuff to help them teach our kids. I thought Bettis was a rich man, why does he need our money to do this if he is such a bigshot already? He always bragged about being so connected.

Editor's note: Below is not an actual news release. It was sent in by a reader as (I assume) satire. It exceeded the word limit but I found it humorous.

For Immediate Release -- The Americans With No Abilities Act   (AWNAA)
Washington, DC
President Barack Obama and the Democrat controlled Congress is considering sweeping legislation that will provide new benefits for many Americans. The Americans With No Abilities Act. AWNAA  is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of  the millions of Americans who lack any real skills or ambition.

Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society,' said California Senator Barbara Boxer. 'We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability to be ridiculed and passed over. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant  special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing.'

In a Capitol Hill press conference, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pointed to the success of the U.S. Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance. Approximately 74  percent of postal employees lack any job skills, making this agency  the single largest U.S employer of Persons of Inability.

Private-sector industries with good records of non-discrimination against the Inept include retail sales (72%), the airline industry (68%), and home improvement 'warehouse' stores (65%). At the state government level, the Department of Motor Vehicles also has an excellent record of hiring Persons of Inability (63%).

Under The Americans With No Abilities Act, more than 25 million  'middle man' positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing an illusory sense of purpose and performance.

Mandatory  non-performance-based raises and promotions will be given so as to guarantee upward mobility for even the most unremarkable employees. The legislation provides substantial tax breaks to corporations that promote a significant number of Persons of Inability into middle-management positions, and gives a tax credit to small and medium-sized businesses that agree to hire one clueless worker for every two talented hires.

Finally, the AWNAA contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the non-abled, banning, for example, discriminatory interview questions such as, 'Do you have any skills or experience that relate to this job?'

'As a Non-abled person, I can't be expected to keep up with  people who have something going for them,' said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as a lug-nut twister at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan, due to her inability to remember 'rightey tightey, lefty  loosey.' 'This new law  should be real good for people like me,' Gertz added.  With the passage of this bill, Gertz and millions of other untalented citizens will finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Said Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL): 'As a Senator with no abilities, I believe the same privileges that elected officials enjoy ought to be extended to every American with no abilities. It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her inadequacy, with some sort of space to take up in this great nation and a good salary for doing so."

It just goes to show how stupid people are, rolling dope next to a cop and drinking a beer at a DUI traffic stop. Hilarious!!!!!

I can see a dopehead doing something this stupid, but to drink beer when your buddy is taking a sobriety test? AND do it while you got a warrant for your arrest?  Thank God for the police that get these idiots off our roads.

I love all the Here's your card stories. I used to think you made em up until I saw their names were actually in the arrests reports. I know its not nice to laugh at people but I can't believe some people can be so (darn) dumb. Maybe they should add an extra charge for dumb crooks for being dumb. Just a thought.

I would give a million bucks to see a picture of the guy rolling the joint when he saw the cop sitting next to him.

That here's your card thing was too funny! Don't edgefield police have cameras in their cars? Can you check to see if they got video of this guy? Great YouTube stuff!!!!!!!! Bet that'd be a million hit clip!!

Here's the link to info on Judge Lee: (Re: Editor's Column)

http://www.sccourts.org/circuitCourt/displaycirjudge.cfm?judgeid=2118

I'll leave it to someone else to find out what all those organizations she belongs to are.

And another commentator on WM is correct. Until South Carolina elects judges fairly, nothing will change. Currently, the General Assembly "elects" most judges: Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Circuit Court (civil / criminal), Family Court. Even Magistrates are appointed by the Governor (with the "advise and consent" of the legislative delegation from a particular county). That ensures that only the politically connected are even considered for judgeships. Votes are bought and sold for judges just like any other issue before the Assembly. And the judicial screening process is a complete joke. Did you know that it is the stated intent of the General Assembly to elect judges based on "diversity" rather than "merit"?

Can you believe that our state law does not require a probate court judge to have a law degree? These judges rule over the disposition of billions and billions of dollars in assets every day. But at least they are elected popularly.

The biggest problem this state has with judges starts at the top: Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean H. ("Hit and Run x 2") Toal.

Massey has never dodged the question. He supports public education, was educated in Edgefield County, is a graduate of STHS, and has voted pro-public education in every and any vote that has come before the legislature. If it weren't for Massey and education supporters, the budgets of school districts would have been sliced and diced even more than they were in recent budget cuts. The ECSD is in such in financial crisis because they had no "rainy day funds", those put aside for emergency situations. These funds were wiped out by idiotic fly-by-the pants programs that did not work and were implemented with no accountability. The problem with the ECSD is there is no accountability for idiotic spending on frivolous programs and teaching techniques.

I strongly disagree with this post. I went to a school board meeting with my wife and several people. When the School Board found out why everyone was there, they called a closed door meeting, made their decisions and then let us back in. The Edgefield County School Board is just like any other “Board” in Edgefield County, not worth a (darn). IE: County Council, Recreation Board, Water Board and several Fire Dept. Boards. Every one of them are in it for themselves or just to scared /dumb to do the right thing. They all talk a good talk to get elected or placed on the board, but when it comes down to doing the right thing, they play the good old boy game. Just my 2 cents.

Editor's note: I have a feeling there are those who have been elected who are not going to tolerate any "Good Ole Boy" politics and remain quiet. School Board member Chris Hoffmann has already expressed his displeasure at the way things are being run in the school district and a vote was taken to support his refusal to take school board pay for serving though it was looked down upon by the majority and the leadership of the BOE (some politicians just hate it when one actually keep the promises made during a campaign). Rodney Ashcraft and Genia Blackwell, recently elected to the County Council, are also not ones to just sit back and allow things they disagree with going unchallenged.

There are also rumblings of a lawsuit to challenge the school board district lines that assures a black majority on the school board in a county that is majority white and the race line votes. I'm keeping a close eye on this.

The sentence Mr Todak received is not unusual. Liberal judges have been dealing out their "version" of justice within All phases of the SC justice system for years. In family court one father. although found guilty, was instead ruled to be " "misunderstood", or when he wanted custody, he wasnt found to be  fit for all children just the son, the mother was told she was  fit but it was  only fair that he"have a turn". I wasnt aware SC had such sentencing guidleines for turns and midunderstood, but apprently they do. What case law would I find that? So let me guess, he was really sorry, he was just  misunderstood. Our state will never allow judges to be elected, why would our legislature give away all that power? Thats how bad judges remain, and good ol boys like certain appellate judges are appointed. Its all part of the good ol boy system, that has become deeply entrenched in all phases of SC politics.

Dear Mr. Editor - Maybe since the recent news about President Elect still being a citizen will help you to understand that there is not any conspiracy to elect a non-American to office.  Actually, I have been laughing over this for sometime and thought I might get in a few digs considering you believe he is a muslim terrorist.  LOL!!!  Anyway, I found it quite humorous that Leo Donofrio believed Obama wasn't eligible due to his father being a British subject, "Donofrio says that since Obama had dual nationality at birth _ his mother was American and his Kenyan father at the time was a British subject _ he cannot possibly be a "natural born citizen," one of the requirements the Constitution lists for eligibility to be president."  A third grade student from Douglas Elementary knows if you are born in America you are a citizen.  Of course Donofrio tried his best to throw in everything except the kitchen sink in making his plead, but our highest court again threw it out.  It's a shame how our tax dollars are put to waste just to humor some idiot lawyer.  I don't know if you realize it or not, but many people like to make money off of the less fortunate.  Anyone who has paid Donofrio for his services or has donated his campaign to exploit President Elect should demand their money back.  Looks like they have been had!!!!  Respectfully..........enjoy the links.

If you have nothing to hide, why spend millions to prevent proving everyone else to be a liar?

This issue is far from over and will be a major thorn in the side of Obama until he either produces the document that can put it all to rest or continues to fight it. No one has ever explained how he traveled the world while in college on an Indonesian Passport. Please explain that.

Mr. Editor you seem to always be bashing on the Democrats and Unions but in all honesty that is what we need. The fact that we don't have certain Unions down here and the fact that are Unions are not as strong in the south because of the right to work crap we have is the reason for so many sitting at home unfairly and not having any ground to stand on. If the Unions could come in here and prosper without all the hoops to jump through maybe our unemployment wouldnt be so high all the time and maybe some people would actually make what they deserve instead of the chump change the businesses want to pay now.   I SAY YES TO ORGANIZED LABOR!!! VOTE UNION!!

Editor's note: Unions have caused the problems facing the bankruptcy of the "Big 3" auto makers and have been the driving force behind the downfall of public education. Since the inception of teachers unions the educational system nationwide has fallen drastically because "unions" fight to keep incompetent teachers on the payroll.  They are also the reason the "Big 3" can't make money because they are forced to pay a janitor wages higher than that of college educated workers in the workforce.

No offense, but the unions work to protect the stupid, not the educated, gifted, and talented who actually produce the GDP of this nation. If you can produce anything to prove otherwise, I'd like to see it.

I think the people of Edgefield need to watch the classic movie “Pollyanna”!!  So many people expend way too much energy being negative, hateful, and full of jealously.  Think of all the great tasks that could be accomplished if even half of the negative energy was channeled into positive projects to better the town.  During these times in America, it is easy to get discouraged and feel disgruntled.  In the movie Pollyanna, this little girl turns the whole town around by teaching them to play the Glad Game.  This game is played by taking any sort of unpleasantness and trying to come up with many reasons to be glad about the situation.  Pollyanna and her father created the glad game when he was a missionary and wrote the people at home that Pollyanna would like a doll for Christmas; however, when the package came there were crutches inside instead of a doll because of a miscommunication. Though disappointed a first, Pollyanna and her father were thankful that she was not in a condition to have to use them, so she was glad.  I think Edgefield needs to play the Glad Game because there are so many wonderful things going on in our county to be thankful for.

Let me start.  Sometimes I read Wandering Minds and I am deeply discouraged about all the hateful things that are posted.  I am Glad that many people have passion about the county, even if it is a bit misguided.  I am Glad that this passion combined with a more loving and positive attitude could make the county and amazing place!

Did I mistake what i thought i heard?

Editor's note: I have gone back and reviewed the recording from the meeting and indeed Chairman Monroe Kneece stated that they (the county council) "tentatively agreed" to allow the county attorney to seek a settlement on a lawsuit against the county prior to a vote in public. This seems to be a common occurrence. Until a citizen challenges it in a court of law nothing will be done to prevent it from continuing.

The above comment and opinion is totally false and expressed by someone who is out of touch with reality. I have personally contacted Mr. Massey 4 times while he served his first, abbreviated term and I heard back from him in less than one day each time. I contacted him about the education legislation that struck down the PACT testing; he emailed back and told me he appreciated my input and would research the matter and he did get back to me. He did this and voted as I had asked him to and the legislation was approved and has been enacted. Please write down your hunting concerns and send them into Wand Minds and I will contact him for you. However, our state gov't has a lot more pressing problems than hunting concerns at this time. Legislators have to prioritize and the needs of the many sometimes outweigh the needs of the one, that being you. As far as your child is concerned, consider the source of the information. Children are not the best judge of character and the apple usually does not fall far from the tree, that being you. What has happened in our country that makes us so ready to steal from people or places that are successful and spread their wealth. Wealth that we did not work for and do not deserve. This is just another in the growing list of examples, of the welfare and
entitlement mindset that people like Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and obviously Rainsford have. Rainsford claims that the article was biased or slanted. That is his opinion. I read the text of the petition and
it is clearly a plan to steal other people's money. That is a fact. Our county needs to work hard to be attactive so that industries will want to locate here. Maybe Rainsford should put a little more effort
toward that goal. Of course that might require a little effort.

With our state once again facing budget shortfalls, and unfunded federal mandates, I have a solution. But first I have a question. Can you please explain why in the late 1960's our state felt they needed ANOTHER public medical university?  the 1st class of physicians at the USC School of Medicine was not until 1977. a state the size of SC does NOT need 2 public medical universities, I believe the term is redundant. The pharmacy programs between MUSC and USC school of medicine have recently been combined within the past year; so it would make sense to combine other programs as well. How much money is spent/wasted on having 2 medical schools? Since Democrats held the governors office from the time of reconstruction to 1975 when Gov  James B. Edwards was elected, you can draw your own conclusions as to who wasted millions and millions of tax payer dollars for another public college we DID NOT need. How is funding 2 public medical universities fiscally responsible? Our public colleges are raising tuition at an astounding rate every year , some as much as 11% and yet we have 2 state supported medical schools. WHY? its time the state corrected the political blunder that is the USC school of medicine and trimed its budget by eliminating the need for 2 medical schools.

Please! Does Bettis Rainsford know how much the education budget has been cut for this county? Surely he cannot expect the school board to come up with $5000 for his plan. If they do grant this, I, as a teacher in the county, really want an explanation!

Editor's note: I doubt the BOE will be handing over any money. But, given the tendencies of the majority of the members, anything is possible.

Does Bettis actually think other counties are going to jump on his idea to take money from one county and giove it to everyone else? I see where he is just talking about power plants but if you can do it for one industry you can do it for others like you said. I see SRS being the next target.

A woman had her child support check taken from her mailbox. With the current downturn in the economy we are facing these type of incidents is bound to only increase. This would not happen if SC would come out of the dark ages and finally take care of the federal child support mandates. Thats why direct deposit or debit cards is so vital to child support collections and disbursements, but does out state care? nope. its all about control, not about the well being of our children in South Carolina.

I heard that Dr. Crenshaw made the comment at Tuesday night's meeting that student suspensions for discipinary problems at JET are fewer than in previous years.  I have heard from several teachers that there are just as many discipline problems as always.  The difference is that the discipline slips are disappearing and the problems are being shoved under the rug.   The teachers say they are writing the students up, but not much action is taken or the teachers are never told what action is taken. Sounds fishy to me.  The truth can't stay hidden forever.  It has also been said that the Board is forcing the administrators to do this.  I don't know if that's true or not, but from what I hear, it's not helping the teachers.

Looks like brother Bettis is buying into this Obama "spread the wealth around" propaganda.  Absolutely, the counties that worked hard to get the power plants to build there, puts up with the traffic, pollution, etc., absolutely they should have to hand over money to counties who don't have to sacrifice.  What I don't understand is why on earth is a school board who is in financial troubles forking over money to Bettis Rainsford for anything!  They're laying off teachers and writing him a check.  Boggles the mind.  Where the heck do we sign up for free money like that?

Anyone that believes for a second that this man would do anything to promote anything but himself or his own interests needs to get therapy. If he really wanted to do something positive for Edgefield perhaps he should start by moving the house that is jacked up and sitting in clear view of all that would visit this town. If the mayor was anything more than his own personal hand puppet he would insist this eyesore and safety hazard be removed from the city or fixed.

On another note: Edgefield has the potential to locate loads of new business to the area, but you will have to make certain they never meet Mr. Dorn during the process. Perhaps the new council members will have the insight to get the fire rating lowered so businesses have affordable insurance, DSL brought to the area (everywhere) and water and sewer availability. These are some things that are necessary for anyone to consider the area.

My request:
As a matter of urgent national security I implore you to add a line item to the next piece of legislation due to come to the Floor the following line:

"Effective immediately, all candidates for National Office must submit to the Federal Elections Commission incontrovertible proof of their eligibility to assume office under the provisions stated in the US Constitution".

If this line is rejected by committee I urge you to submit it as a stand alone bill.

His reply:
Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns regarding President-Elect Obama and allegations regarding his birth-certificate and citizenship.

Like you, I believe the US Constitution must be protected.  There is no doubt that our Constitution clearly states that only natural born citizens over the age of thirty five can serve as President of the United States.  While I understand your concern, as you may have learned, earlier this year President-Elect Obama’s campaign did issue a copy of his birth certificate from the state of Hawaii.  The document has been examined by numerous organizations and several government agencies, including the non-partisan group FactCheck.org and the State Department, all have determined the document to be a valid US birth certificate.  In fact, the court case you reference in your letter, Philip Berg v. Barack Obama was dismissed on October 24, 2008.

Again, thank you for contacting me regarding this important issue.  Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if you have questions or concerns regarding an issue under consideration by Congress.

Best Wishes,
Representative J. Gresham Barrett
As you know the rejection came from US District Court in Philthadelphia and the "birth Certificate" is a forgery of a certificate of live birth.

Just for clarification, on the silent days.  It is positive reinforcement for the kids.  The games are still lively, and the children learn more.  Imagine being at work and all of your coworkers yelling ugly, demeaning commands at you.  After a short time you would feel insulted and let down.  I have heard parents scream at children that they are useless for not hitting a ball or kicking the ball.  What does this do to the kids?  Those who think that this is a violation of your freedom of speech rights, need to look at the rights of your children. They deserve to have the same positive lifestyles you grew up with.   It is a whole lot harder to be mad and hostile at a game than it is to reinforce the good things.  It is healthier for both the spectator and the player.  And as the old saying goes " Don't knock it until you try it."

In a time where we need to be more supportive of everyone and our morals are shifting, I ask you to really think about the impact this small feat would have on your children and your future.

I've read a couple stories that say Hillary Clinton being appointed to Sec of State is unconstitutional and others that say it doesn't matter she can take the job. You're pretty up on these things so I wanted to get your take.

Editor's note: Article One, Section Six of the U.S. Constitution says:  No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States which shall have been created, or the Emoluments (Pay) whereof shall have been increased during such time; and no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office.

Basically that means she cannot take the job if the salary was increased during the current congressional term and the salary for cabinet officials went up last year while Clinton was a Sen. (I believe she voted for it, but I have not gone back and checked the records). Even if the pay is lowered back down to previous levels or she accepts lower pay than passed, constitutional scholars say that may not be enough to fix the problem.

Then again, Obama in on record saying the Constitution is "too restrictive" and he thinks it needs changing. Moreover, he refuses to prove he is a native born American, another one of those "pesky restrictions" in the Constitution. Democrats are infamous for ignoring the Constitution or claiming it to be a "living breathing document" that changes meaning over time.

My guess, they will ignore the Constitution and place Hillary as Sec. of State. Afterall, "spreading the wealth around" is also unconstitutional and they've been doing that in one form or another since FDR and the New Deal.

Look at my fellow conservatives! There they go, glumly shuffling along, depressed by the election aftermath. Not me. I’m virtually euphoric. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not thrilled with America ’s flirtation with neo socialism. But there’s a massive silver lining in those magical clouds that lofted Barak Obama to the Presidency. For today, without a shred of intellectually legitimate opposition, I can loudly proclaim to America : The Era of White Guilt is over.

This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn’t give a fluff about skin color, and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man. Not just any  black man. A very liberal black man who spent his early career race - hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively worked with America-hating domestic terrorists. Wow! Some resume! Yet they made Barak Obama their leader. Therefore, as of Nov 4th, 2008, white guilt is dead.

For over a century, the millstone of white guilt hung around our necks, retribution for slave-owning predecessors. In the 60s, American liberals began yanking that millstone while sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans, exacerbating the racial divide to extort a socialist solution. But if a black man can become President, exactly what significant barrier is left? The election of Barak Obama absolutely destroys the entire validation of liberal white guilt. The dragon is hereby slain.

So today, I’m feeling a little “uppity,” if you will. From this day forward, my tolerance level for having my skin color hustled is now exactly ZERO. And it’s time to clean house. No more Reverend Wright’s “God Damn America ,” Al Sharpton’s Church of Perpetual Victimization , orJesse Jackson’s rainbow racism. Cornell West? You’re a fraud. Go home. All those “black studies” programs that taught kids to hate whitey? You must now thank Whitey. And I want that on the final.

So they have broke ground to start building a new Fox Creek High School. With all the wondering minds opinion why would you build a new school if the school not accredited for the kids to graduate.

Shouldn’t they get the administrative staff and scores high before spending the money to get a new school? I know it can be embarrass to go to school were they use to gamble at but that should have been thought out before starting a school and  not have a proper place to have it.

Does that editor put this new school as a public school when it is finish?

For those that do not know were the new grounds are  Stephen Mills Rd and Shortcut Rd just in case you want to go by and see it.

Editor's note: Although FCCHS is a "public school" it is independent of the county school district. Yes, they have received a USDA loan and will begin construction this month. Of course, the government was giving loans to people who used welfare as income (Fannie Mae-Freddie Mac) that got us in the financial meltdown we're in. And, of course, FCCHS can't end a year in the black ink and they do not have the money to repay the loan. They believe that if they build it then the county school district has to take it over when they belly up. Wrong, they will be responsible because the ECBOE can't take the debt by law.

A couple of years from now, we will all see that these bailouts were set up by Paulson and Georgie Bush to make sure that all the rich execs at these banks and financial institutions get there share when they retire. You blame Obama, but it will be George Bush who bankrupts this country and rapes it all of all fiscal responsibility before he leaves office. GUess what, not a single mention of any travel delays. The SC DOT web site was absolutely useless, just another example of a fine use of taxpayers dollars to provide no real time information. As a matter of fact when I clicked on the "winter road conditions" it gives you an error message and says the information is not available. That part of my family heard about a major tie up at I-26 and 385 that said it was backed up for hours and to find an alternate route. again, I checked the sites and nothing. not a mention, I couldn't even find a local TV station in those areas with any information. I guess they use the same sites for their information as well. It does solve a dilemma for me, now I know to get each of them a GPS for their car so I don't have to depend on SC DOT to be up to date.

Editor's note: I doubt the Edgefield County Council could legally enforce their self imposed restriction on hand held signs. Such is protected under the First Amendment and has been upheld by the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS). There is no county ordinance, or state law, preventing a resident from using signs and if one was proposed it would be met with a legal challenge and would most likely be withdrawn by the county. EdgefieldDaily.com would fund the legal challenge to any such ordinance in court.

Mam what do you mean YOU people so you referring to Blacks that DSS office was like when Clinton was in the seat and your favorite uncle and Granddad George and Little George Bush. They are nasty and it needs cleaning up. Not just to Blacks or Hispanic the whole office has a mixture and they all need to go. So maybe the change you say YOU People may just work when he is in the seat come Jan. As right now your Uncle is still there. Did you forget?

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense, waiting for an attack. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.
2 If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
3 I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.
4 When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.
5 A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'
6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.'
7. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

But wait, there's more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, 'Of course it is loaded -- can't work without bullets!' She then ask ed, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No, not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded, too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

Editor's Post: I would like say I support and agree with Councilman Kitchens' reported comments of him not being a painted white faced clown...
