Does anyone know of day lilies for sale around Edgefield County?
Thanks!

Yes, I heard the same thing about the Seniors at FCHS.  They  have missed to many  days of school. This information came from a student at FCHS.

Editor's note: I would prefer to rely on the actual figures at the time of graduation.

I am so happy to see all the council positions being challenged in this election! If all voters play their cards right we may see a major turnover and these sorry incumbents will realize they should have listened to the citizens of this county a long time ago.

SCE&G customer serivice at its best. I wrote in about the lazy meter readers, I contacted the customer service department that day to complain. I was told, it was "noted' in the computer and that a supervisor woud contact me to discuss the problem. Well, three weeks later and no call, so I sent an email, no response. They don't have to answer because we have no choice in who we use for electric power. Its not over yet, I am still seriously considering spike strips at the end of the drive, when they get four flat tires, maybe then they will walk.I plan on calling customer service again to let them know, that no one thinks its important enough to answer.

Editor's note: Be careful, you could end up paying for tire repairs.

RE:CountylineVFD I'll answer your question. I just recently moved to Edgefield county from Aiken county. I am going to offer my experience and talents to Countyline VFD. Being a memeber of a Vol service myself for so long, I've seen people like the person your defending come and go. It is easy to form "opinions" from the outside looking in.This person has never offered anything helpful or constructive in these post since I started reading back in JUNE OF 07.Just because you have a outlet to express these "opinions" does not make it right. CVFD may not be perfect, but those men/women are doing something alot of people can not do or will not do. As for you and I we will agree to disagree.I just want to offer him/her this challenge, join up and help make it better, or move on to something else and keep their destructive critisism to themselves.

Is that true about only 15 seniors being able to graduate at FCHS?  I am a senior at FCHS. My grades are up and I havent missed 10 days in any of my classes, but I mean not that I would know because I dont really like anyone there, but there can not be that many people failing.  Do you know if this is true or not?  And if so do you know the reason or reasons?

Editor's note: I have no idea what the truth is when it comes to Fox Creek. They have never released any information from the school to EdgefieldDaily.com in over three years.

I had to go to Augusta today and passed DOT mowing the grass on Sweetwater Rd. I have no prob with that, but I do have a prob w/ 1 guy sitting in a truck with the motor running (gas is real high now) asleep with a sign in the back that said mowing ahead. There were other signs on the road that said that already. When I came back to Edgefield the same guuy had moved down the road and still look asleep.

Editor's note: That is your government at work.

Editor's note: Yes. But I also love the way some of them taste.

I have been looking over the county budget you have posted and had a question.  On recreation expense and then under Edgefield Cty Park, it shows a salary of $26,000.  Then under County Recreation it shows a salary of $36,115.  Now I'm assuming the $36,115 is for the recreation director, but what or who is the $26,000 for?

Editor's note: The question of the salary at the Edgefield Cty Park (Bettis Park) is a question I have never received an answer to. I have a pretty good idea.

I understand both sides of the story when it comes to Horn's Creek Church. The recent articles have greatly increased the traffic to the Church. I know this because I live on Old Stage Rd.  There are only 7 houses on the dirt road section of Old Stage Rd. and we all know who drives what vehicles. When I see three and four cars at a time speeding down the road on a Friday or Saturday night I know exactly where they are going. I am ashamed at the condition of this Church. I have lived here for six years and have not seen one thing done to better the conditions. Every now and then someone will clear the cemetery. Lately someone has burned back all the brush in the cemetery, and the area looks better than it has for a long time, but it is still a shame to see a place of worship in such a pitiful condition. In the past years I have found broken tombstones thrown out in the road. I have seen a nice motor home get destroyed. I have seen garbage dumped there. I have seen the evidence where someone tried to start a fire in the Church. I have run off kids in the middle of the night.  My biggest fear is that the building will be burned down. Anyone who is willing to topple head stones surely has no problem with setting the structure ablaze. It is my understanding that the Edgefield Historical Society owns the property. I beg them to somehow better secure the site. At least put a couple of lights down there so that vandals don't have the security of darkness. I would gladly participate in helping to restore the facility, but first it must be properly secured.

We live in Merriwether but we have to vote in the Westside district. What I want to know is why would somebody from Edgefield  represent us? What's up with the little finger that lets Mr. Kitchens claim us?  I sent you a comment before that the way the disctrict is drawn it looks like it is shooting us the bird and you never posted it. Why am I not surprised that "The Big Man" of Edgefield would think the best solution to someone not agreeing with his personal opinion is to fight a duel to the death. It's sad when bullies always get their way, by whatever means possible. So much for our First Amendment right to freedom of speech.

Thank you for the reminders of just how badly Edgefield County needs to replace every County Council Member.  We need to be reminded often, lest we forget – or, this too shall pass.

Once we get new council members, then, and only then, we can start the replacement of county employees who are not worthy to accept the county taxpayers’ monies each payday.

Another example, did not one of the council members say they would charge the taxpayers’ of Edgefield County for food when on the Hilton Head trip, even though food was provided” duh…..

Maybe we need to start listing an example every day until election time.

Editor's note: I intend to recount the actions of the County Council in early June.

RE: Countyline. I guess I need to type a little slower for you? I said I know the person you were asking about in your original post. So again get your facts straight. You didn't answer my question; do you live in Edgefield County? When did Edgefield County get a Vol. Rescue Squad? As of yesterday morning they don't have one. So again whose community are you serving? Its funny how no one wanted to respond to the post on web posted February 26, 2008? Again I will ask you to read my post real careful, I know the person you were asking about. I feel like this person has every right to keep up with his/her tax money. This person has the right to point out anything that is wrong. This person has every right to post on EDGEFIELDDAILY.COM. Just like in his/her original post, "Number three, YOU and your COUNTYLINE BOYS run down to LOWES, buy some lumber, nails and a hammer, build a bridge and get over it."

I saw some SCDOT guys working on Briggs Rd. They told me they are going to pave it. I guess it's nice to be a (county) councilman like Mr. Hudson and can get your own road paved while we needed ours paved for years. We live on Thurmond Rd.

Editor's note: Briggs Road is a state road not a county road. Former Sen. Tommy Moore pushed for that paving along with Woodlawn Road. Though I live on Woodlawn Road I would prefer they pave another road. Once Woodlawn is paved it will be an even bigger raceway for motorcycles than it is already. County Councilman Joel Hudson has nothing to do with what state roads get paved.

I was in a local restaurant this week and overheard some people discussing the two books written about Sue Stidham Logue and Strom Thurmond. They were highly defensive of Strom and in denial about what happened on their ride to the death house. I know, personally, that he overstepped his bounds when dealing with women. Quite a few years back, he was present at the dedication of the Johnston Elementary School Gym. He was meeting the public and when he got to me and my husband he politely shook my husbands hand, chatted a second, and then turned to me. He reached out, pulled me to him, wrapped me in a big bear hug, squeezed me, too firmly, up against his body, and proceded to let his hands drop until he had a handfull of my bottom. I know the trend in Edgefield county is to laugh this kind of thing off when associated with Strom Thurmond, but it showed me that all the stories I've heard about his womanizing was based on truth. You people keep living in your little fantasy world about him, if you like, but there are some of us out here who don't think his actions were so cute.

How can Kitchens say that council only has control of 40% of the county's budget?  Doesn't every county office submit a budget to council for approval?  Isn't that why the Sheriff cannot get the deputys he needs to cover our county?  Because even when it comes to elected officials, council holds the purse strings.  Elected officials are elected by the people of the entire county, not just a portion as are councilmen.  The people of each district must take responsibility for the person they elect to represent them, as each councilman affects the county as a whole.  Council as it stands now is a lost cause.  They cannot see past their own stupidity.  They have snorted too much Adams and Big "B" and they cannot get past the addiction.  It is time to give this county a council that can think independently yet work diligently for the people of this county and not the chosen few.  We the people can bring this to fruition by voting for new faces, fresh minds and free thinkers.

The daughter of one of our friends came home from school at Strom Thurmond today, saying the talk about Horns Creek Baptist Church was raging all over the school today. Some students she knows have went out there to see if what they were hearing was true. To show her, we took her there and none of us could believe the vandalism we saw. How can a person sleep at night after desacrating the graves like they have? This place should be restored, not destroyed! What kind of teenagers do these things? What kind of parents raised them? This is a church! Gods house! It scares me to know we have young folks out there who think this is funny. This destruction is sick! Hopefully they will be caught before they are able to destroy any more than they already have. They should be punished, fined, and made to clean up the mess they made and clean up the entire church grounds, if they are ever caught, no matter who their parents turn out to be. May God's will be done.

Everett Kitchens says that he has a personal interest in an adult recreation program.  Exactly what is that?  When the senior citizens council wanted extra money to put an Alzheimers Day Care in their new facility he was against it.  At the council meeting when they were asking for the money he said he didn't think we (the county) needed it.  It would seem that he wants to provide "recreation", but not care for those who so desperately need it.  That's just sorry.

Editor's post: A very viable candidate has dropped out of the list of those considering filing for a seat on the county council today. Two were actively seeking to run in the same disctrict and decided to join forces to oust an incumbent. That announcement will be official, I am told, today. Check back on Friday for details. A fourth challenger has not filed or confirmed their candidacy as of yet in another race. Talks of a candidate to challenge another county council seat are ongoing and nothing concrete has been forthcoming. A candidate considering a run in the same district also dropped out of consideration on Wednesday. A full report of who is in and who is not will be published on Monday. County Council Chairman Monroe Kneece filed to run for re-election on Wednesday.

Read the articles by Ashcraft and Kitchens in the Advertiser.  Sounds like Kitchens is throwing the counties problems on the backs of the elected officials.  Isn't he elected?  Doesn't county council also employ personnel?  Sounds to me like he just shot himself in the foot!  His traveling time for Boral Brick must have primed him for the county financed Hilton Head trips.  Wonder what those cost the county?

I read where people are bad mouthing Greg Anderson for running against Shane Massey. I voted for Mr. Massey and will probably vote for him again but I think it is wrong to disparage Mr. Anderson for offering to serve our area. I don't dislike Mr. Anderson. Like I said I probably won't vote for him but he is a respectable man and I think it is bad to try to make him out to be a bad man for running. People can be cruel when it comes to politics and I wish that part of it would be ignored.

I read the article about (County Councilman) Everett Kitchens today. From what he said I guess he wants to blame everybody else for what they do wrong. I was insulted that he thought people would buy the lie that they haven’t raised taxes. You don’t have to raise a millage rate if you double or triple peoples assessments like they did. When they raise the assessments the millage rate is SUPPOSED to GO DOWN! You don’t have to raise the millage rate if you make everybody’s property worth more than it is worth. DUH!!!!!!! The (darn) taxes still go UP !!!!!!!!

Ashcraft has my vote. I’m tired of the little weasel and his lies.

Re: County Line
So you make the rules on who is obsessed? Are you a self proclaim Physiologist? If this person wants to point out problems with his/her local Volunteer Fire Department that uses his/her tax money, what is wrong with that? There has to be some truth to what is being said. Because this person is getting under somebody's skin. As I stated in my last post, I do know this person real well. This person has giving of his/her self for over 20 years and never ask for anything in return. Unlike you this person doesn't have to post "As for me I have over ten years of community service with a local vol rescue squad and also serve as a reserve EMT with a local EMS service." Because we all know people that brag about themselves are big headed, egotistical and want the spot light on themselves. Did you join the vol rescue squad for spite too? So do everyone a big favor and get your facts straight before you start making a popes azz out of yourself again. Not a member? LOL!

Editor's post: I spent my day Tuesday with Lindsay Wilkes-Edrington from the Missouri University School of Journaism, who is going to graduate in seven weeks. She is focusing on small town media outlets that are successful in an ever growing diminishing market. I am sure I bored her out of her mind. I read many of her published stories over the years in research prior to our meeting. She was very articulate and will no doubt make a huge impact in whatever market she enters. I was humbled to be chosen as a media outlet to be spotlighted. Remeber her name, I am sure you will be seeing great things from this young lady in the near future.

I have received countless pictures of possible "ghosts" in photos taken at the Horn Creek Baptist Church. In all but one I have found the photos to be manipulated. Do not waste my time with faked pictures.

I just watched a commercial, on Channel 6, singing the praises of thier new, WJBF.com/classifieds section, online. They were boasting about not having to check the print media for classified ads. As usual, readers of Edgefielddaily.com. already have this service provided locally, by the editor. Looks like he's started a trend! It's amazing how a good idea snowballs. I wander if any of the TV websites will ever have a public opinion section, like your Wandering Minds?

Editor's note: Most media outlets have feed back or comments that are posted on stories. None offer a condensed forum like the Wandering Minds. As far as Classifieds, EdgefieldDaily.com offers this service free of charge for private sales. I am unaware of the WJBF's Classifieds and whether the service is free or not. WJBF News 6 is a News Partner of EdgefieldDaily.com.

I seldom take issue with you, but I must say that your original article about Horn's Creek church was irresponsible. There is enough attention to the site, without posting the photos of an alleged "ghost" on your website. You should have thought about the interest such a photograph would draw to the historic church. Now you continue to give press to the vandals who are getting a kick out of seeing their handiwork published. Please stop posting articles about Horns Creek. As my father always said, "#$@! don't stink until you stir it up."

Editor's note: In three years I have published three reports on what is taking place at the historic church. I hardly see where that is drawing attention to the miscreants that cause the damage versus those seeking to restore the location. Should I not report on the happenings and allow it to continue unabated or should I draw attention to what is taking place and encourage law enforcement to pay greater attention to the problem?

I could report on Crybaby Bridge and Hell's Gate, also located in the vicinity, if the purpose was to draw unwanted attention to the area. The reports have increased patrols of the area. Is that a bad thing or a good thing? I guess I could pretend that it is not happening. I understand your concern, but to rectify the situation requires attention to the matter being made public.

With the election coming up on April 1, 2008  (interesting date) and NO one running against the people already setting on council, one would think that everything is OK.  Funny, doesn't anyone in Edgefield or Johnston care?

But on the other hand, look at the County Council and the School board, maybe it takes the towns getting into trouble before anyone really cares what is going on.

This areas new State Senator, Shane Massey, held a town hall meeting, in Johnston, Monday Night.  I was surprised to see how FEW folks are concerned enough about their community to come meet, greet him, and ask questions of him.

NOT SURPRISING was the total lack of town leaders(?) in attendance.  Not one town councilman attended nor did the Mayor.  Now there is true concern and leadership for you.  I suppose that if it does not involve cable football programming or painting trash cans it is of no importance.

I found Mr Massy's talk very informative and showed knowledge of the office he holds.  He explained why he voted for or against many issues.  I, for one, do appreciate him taking his time for us.  He won my vote in the upcoming election once again.

I happened to find Horn Creek Church on a bike ride I did one day from Merriweather to downtown Edgefield.  I try to stop by that church if I ride that direction.  But, I haven't visited it in years.
It is sad to hear it is being vandalized.  That church is cool and entering it should be done with respect for it's history.  The sign nearby marking the Revolutionary War is another great reason to ride a bike past this site.  And another reason to treat the entire area with respect and awe for it's role in our being free today.
The Horn Creek Church is a place I want to one day take my young children to visit.  I hope it is still there when that time comes.

To the poster who said the world would be a safer and better place if people would mind their own business:
IF everybody WOULD mind their business.  However, it's those who leave messes for others to clean up, bills
that others have to pay, through charity, handouts, etc., social problems that the teachers and schools have to deal with because they are not dealt with in the homes - I could go on, but you get the point.  Your business is being minded because you are not minding it, and it makes problems for society.

I have been reading all about the scurious and out-of-control politicians that seem to afflict the good people of our county.  As a relative newcomer of three years, I am deeply disturbed and somewhat worried about it all.   All of this reminds me of a quote by Plato, the Greek philosopher...."The punishment of wise men who refuse to take part in the affairs of government is to live under the government of unwise men."

The advantage of living in a small county is that most people know each other very well.  Were these fellows bad before they were elected, or did the arrogance of power so corrupt
them afterwords....either way, it is time to step forward and call them out.  Like practically all bullies, they will run and hide...

It's good to see our tax paying money is used in such an undermining way (the ancient taxidermy bear) while trespassers and pochers continue to tromp our property. Thanks!

Not stereotyping ALL the DNR officers, there are really good ones. BUT we reported someone baiting on the back of our family's property-somehow the guy knew "of the area". In response to "Electric Company METER READERS" post on March 13th...

We had a similar problem with non-walking meter readers as well. But taking your dog off the leash won't help-I told the same meter reader time and time again that our little beagle-fiest cross will not bite, just bark to let us know someone is in her yard. Needless to say, the day I wasn't home when my meter was read, our family dog was ran over in our long private drive in the front yard and left there. After back tracking to see who's been in our driveway, the electric company informed us that the driver admitted to "bumping" the dog. We didn't know we were able to press charges. We later found out the guy was fired. We have yet been able to replace that dog...it's been 10 years...she was the best!

I was shocked to see the beautiful grave markers destroyed.  I am also appalled as to the devastation that has been done to the beautiful santuary.  I would hope that the citizens of the county would come together to clean up this site and restore the church to somewhat a presentable state; it would take more labor than money to at least clean it up.  I am willing and wondering if anyone would join me on Saturday, March 29th to have a clean up day.  Perhaps a grant could be acquired later to place a wooden fence across the front so only walk-ins could be allowed to enter the premises to enjoy the beauty of the grounds.  Hoping to hear from someone; especially ancestors of the decendants buried there.  I'll be there with my rake and hand clippers if you'll join me. Thanks for reading this. Hey, it would be nice if the people who continue to vandalize the grounds would come to.  It is not a ghost area, it is a place of sanctuary. If there are ghosts, it is their place, not anyone's to destroy.

Yes I know this person real well and I wouldn't say this person is obsessed with County Line. I would say this person is standing up for what they feel is right. Thanks to EDGEFIELDDAILY.COM this person can voice his/her opinions. This person has several hobbies and one of them is keeping tabs on County Line. As for you joining Countyline VFD, go right ahead and join. We all know you'll fit in real good with the rest of them at Countyline. How do I know? Because you said "but I want to join just to spite this person." not to help someone or to give back to your community. Just for spite? You're a class act just like the Countyline Boys!

I watched the other day as the newcasters featured the two State troopers car cameras when they were using their cars to hit the fleeing suspects.  They interviewd a State lawmaker with all the righteous indigfnation he could muster, that one of them "Bragged about it"  A few weeks back,  I watched when some withe kid thought he'd try to out run the police.  This ended wiht his crashing the car and killing his young female passenger.  they even brought her grieving sister  on so she could blame the police.  Well,I believe that placing the police in the position to protect us from the consequences of our bad decisons puts them in a role that is impossible to fill.
I also think, and I wish my legislator did too, that running from the police is a 'Jackass'thing to do.
when some idiot makes the call to try to outrun the police how can we put the blame on the police?  Asking them to just let fleeing suspects run is frustrating out justice system.  And, I've been around enough criminal to know that if the young suspect had gotten away he too, would have "bragged about it" with his cronies on the street.  I'd like to see South Carolina develop a reputation that intimidates criminal activity.  The State would only stand to benefit if Crooks were to go practice their Illicit behavior somewhere else.
It may not be popular, but my sympathies lie with the Police here.
I'm oldschool enough and I wish my legilator friend was too.

Further to my recent post concerning Barrack Obama using only his black heritage to promote his campaign, he has now made several serious blunders in the past few days. The latest "Freudian" slip came when he said his grandmother is a quote "typical white person" who is afraid of black men. If you now step back and and look at what he has said and done recently, we may find a deep rooted racist running for the Democratic Presidential nomination. He first said his grandmother would on occasion use racist slurs when he was growing up. Then, after realizing he has embaressed his family on national television, he trys to explain that his grandmother is not racist, but a "typical white person".  He is now attempting to rationalize the last statement without much success. The egg on his face is thick.

After now learning that his father is/was muslim, he claims to be Christian but attends/attended a church with a preacher who preached hate against the white man, has thrown his white family under the bus to promote his campaign, it looks like his campaign is about to swoon. Many of his supporters have been young white people. They have now found out they are only "typical white people" in his eyes.  He is slowly but surely handing this nomination to Hillary on a silver platter. God help us all.

Are most of the people who live in Norman Dorn's district as stupid acting as he? Do they like to have a man representing them who (was) impersonating as a teacher? Do they admire a man who ignores 'No Burning' rules? If the answer to these questions is 'yes', then I suggest his district is annexed as "Mentally Disturbed", and a 11 foot tall electric fence put around the district with armed guards to ensure these deranged Norman Dorn voters do not mix with the rest of the world. This man and the people who support him must be nuts, or maybe Norman Dorn likes nuts?

Editor's note: I can assure you the people of his district are actively seeking a candidate.

An article about ghosts at Horn's Creek was just sent to me by one of our investigators Dad's. We just did an investigation at Horn's Creek Baptist Church on March 17th, 2 days before this article. We caught a girls voice on both our video sound, our microcassette and digital recorder, all at the time it happened.(3 different devices all catching the same thing) We have not reviewed all the evidence yet, but you can hear the EVP's and see the photos at our site...I will send you directly to that page. http://granitevilleparanormal.tripod.com/id27.html  This is the Horn's Creek page. There are many photos, but give it time to load because there are 4 recordings on that page. On page 2 is the photo. We do have the originals as well. We are waiting on 2 investigators, one with camcorder with nightshot, and the other has more photos.

Editor's note: Four vehicles were reported out at Horn
Creek Baptist Church just before midnight Friday. I would advise anyone choosing to go to the church to respect the historic location and not to alter, remove, or tamper with anything at the location. The area is patrolled and if you cause any of the above you can be charged and arrested. It was also reported that other vehicles were reported near the area after midnight. There also seemed to be an animal killed in or around the church and blood was found at the location.

Those responsible for nefarious activity will be prosecuted if identified.

That means NO MONEY. Now what happen to the water foundation, that was purchased two years ago, Did it end up in someone's backyard?

2. Maybe the county needs to get a professional to run the county. A lot of errors.

3.Did anyone look at the proposed budget real close?  You think last year had some unanswered questions.

4.  How much will it cost the county to run Johnston's Recreation program????

Editor's note: 1) The money for the landscaping is being used from budgeted money for an administrator and would be reimbursed if the grant comes through. 2) Amen. 3) Amen again. 4) If the county runs it the cost would go up ten-fold.

The goverment teaches people not to work, they can get welfare, cheat rent, food stamps and free rides , free medical treatment. If you are single and you have raised your kids you do not get Help. You do not even get a third of what you pay in in taxes back. But even people that get welfare checks can let other people claim their children and still get some of the tax money. Where is the justice in that? Alot of people are complaining about Mexicans taking the jobs, but the goverment is teaching people not to work. Somebody has to do the jobs.

In reference to the poster of : "Hey douchebag, you ever hear of James Hagee! Or whatabout the conservative, meth snorting preacherthat was having sex with men, while he's got a wife and children at home."

Hey (you),  I did not write the post you refer to but I agree with him.  First, I don't trust any preachers because they are hippocrats as you so well point out, nor do I sit in church and listen to them, hell, anyone can become a preacher or Rev., Dr. etc.   I would not let my child be in the care of Priests or Preachers.   BUT, they are not in the church preaching hate and racism and anti-American.  If they were, the NAACP would be all over them.

As far as what you say about "The one good thing about America is that you can say and think what you want within certain limits of the law. That's why they call it FREEDOM."  Are you kidding me?! If that were the case why can't a white man say the "n" word, we cannot even spell it out! It's Just a Word!  Blacks can say it as every other word but if you're white and heaven forbid be a celebrity (or someone that Al and Jessie thinks might have money or something they can get from you) you will be drug through all kinds of racial crap for your FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

Racism is alive in America because of people like the REV Wright, REV Sharpton and REV Jackson.  And I am told it goes on in a lot of black "churchs", not just his.  I myself was floored by the videos of this disgusting REV. and to see how his congregation was all with him on it.  Do they really believe this is good and godly?

Also, for those that agree with the "REV" Wright, if you don't like the good USA or think it is USKKKA, then by all means please LEAVE, Delta is ready when you are!

Editor's note: Sen. Obama and his wife have attended the church for 20 years and have raised their children there. His last donation to the church was well over $20,000. I think I read it was $28,000 - but I have not confirmed it.

I was amused that he said though he went there for 20 years, he did not agree with the sermons. I have left a church over a single sentence spoken by the preacher and never went back.

The picture in the mirror taken at the Church could be real. I believe in ghosts because my two sisters and I grew up in a haunted house. My Mother and all 12 of her bothers and sisters grew up there before us and there was never any questions in their minds about it.The ghost or ghosts were never scary and just became part of the family.I know it sounds strange but we talked to it sometimes and told it to be quiet in the middle of the night when it was doing things that kept us awake. No, it never talked back but many times it stopped whatever it was doing. I don't tell many people this because they think you are making it up, but I know it to be true. I might tell you later the story of taking my new husband home to my Mother's one weekend. Made a believer out of him.

Editor's note: I have checked the picture very closely and find no evidence that the image has been tampered with.

The more I learn and attempt to understand Presidential candidate Barrack Obama, the more I wonder why he promotes himself to be African-American. He indeed had a black father, but his mother is white. According to his latest news conference to try and distance himself from the preacher spewing racial sermons, he himself said the most influencial people in his life were his mother and his white grandparents. Why then does he promote himself as African-American. He could easily be "just American", like many mixed race people do, as well as white people.

The answer to this question is simple. A young, relatively inexperienced politician of mixed race, but promoting that he was raised and "feels" mostly white, would not have a bats chance in hades to become a Presidential contender, much less President of the United States of America. Given his birth name and muslim influence, it would be considered a joke and waist of time and money to even attempt a presidential campaign. He has chosen this route for the sole purpose of ensuring his political career and it has been extremely successful.

Understand this is not an assasination of Barrack as a person. He is smart, intelligent, charismatic and a great speaker. He has the ability, not unlike JFK, to appeal to a large segment of the people with his orations (I think I have read about these type of people coming to power in the Bible), but he has yet to divulge his plan to "unite all people, end the war and stabilize and improve the economy". Just to be fair, neither has Hillary or McCain.

The point of this writing is so people understand that politcians in general will do and say most anything it takes to get elected. At that point they have reached their own personal goal. It is the people that must then suffer the consequences of their lack of experience, knowledge and honesty when we have a major crisis. And be assured, in this day and time, there will be plenty of those in the next 4 years.

Just as I was going through the light a Johnston police officer came barreling through the cross street which just so happened his light was red. He then proceeded to ride my (bumper) all the way down calhoun and floored it past me when we hit the 4 lane. Where were you going in such a hurry with no lights and siren on? I  worked, but I always manged to have more month left than money. when I applied  I had to show a 3 month period of bank statements, pay stubs,my divorce decree, car title,( you can only have a certain monetary amount in assests, in YOUR name)   birth certificates, and social security cards for everyone in the household. while.I am sure some people do get away with lying and decietful practices in order to obtain assitance,  my point is that.NOT EVERYONE ON EBT and Medicaid. do so because they think it is a way of life.     It isn't that people on EBT or mediciad do not have a sense of responsibilty and pride, sometimes you must swallow your pride so you can put food on the table.I went from having it all, to having nothing,    Eventually the state found my exhusband and I was able to  recoup some of the unpaid child support and ao was able to get on my feet financially. However, when I recieved that first check I took my kids on a much needed shopping spree,we bought things we didnt need and things we did, so I guess that makes me a bad parent, but you know what, it was our money to spend how we wanted.Your desire for people needing to learn to be  responsible human beings with a little measure of pride;sounds great,When I was struggling with the decision to apply for assistance,I always thought that I was" to good for that sort of thing" my pastor once advised me a good and responsible person puts  family  before their pride, everytime .

As for the quoted amount of Food Stamp benefits by the DSS worker, benefits for 3 people in a household can
vary according to income, expenses, and other factors. However, the most a 3 person household could receive
would be in the $320 range per month. This amountwould be for a household that had no earned or unearned income.

Funny, I've gotten it every year and placed it online and it has been widely read as were each subsequent budget throughout the process. I guess the Edgefield County Council did not sign on to the Sunshine Resolution this year. What are they hiding? Oh, he says he wants me to submit my request in writing rather than take the time to appear in person to make the request.

I have a standing written request Mr. Pettigrew. Maybe you misplaced it along with the letter from the Planning Commission telling you Bernadette Hudson was going to continue to serve on the planning commission. Come on, with the huge raise you got ten seconds after getting hired last December you should be able to keep up with things. If the job is too hard maybe we should look for someone else or cut your pay.

The rest of the county council may be all Mr. Chuckles with you... but I am not laughing.

I am going to be reviewing several months of recordings to verify claims made Tuesday night. This should be interesting. I will be using my own high quality digital recordings not the crappy analog tapes the county makes.

Did you hear about the price of gas at a certain gas station in Johnston on yesterday afternoon? The gas sign at the road said $3.21, but at the tank it was $2.21 for Plus. What a deal!! I doubt if the owner was aware of this. I got a full tank for $20.00.

I have been reading your site for sometime and thoroughly enjoy it.  The wandering minds seems to be a great place for people to vent and I have an issue that needs venting.  My child is a student at W.E. Parker.  For the last 3 weeks the kids have had to eat off of styrofoam plates and use plastic forks.  Apparently the dishwasher is broken.  Wonder where all the trash is going?  A school can generate a mega amount of styrofoam plates and we all know how bad styrofoam is for the environment.  I don't even use styrofoam at home because of the tremendous impact it has in that it never breaks down.  If the dishwasher is broken I think a repairman is in order.  Now I know that Peanut Butter and Jelly (which seems to be the main staple for Parker's menu) can make a mess, so maybe the dishwasher just needs a good roto rootering to clean out that gummy peanut butter and sticky jelly!  Maybe the Food Service Director can get her councilman father to assist her in getting the job done.  The environment would be very appreciative.

I'm a little late responding to the letter by Tim Bledsoe concerning the electoral college but it's time for me to impose a little reality on the gentleman.
First, I extend my condolences for his inability to come to grips with this wonderful system of choosing our national leaders that was established by the Found Fathers.
Understanding that a direct one-man, one-vote system would impose a tyranny of the majority based on population advantages held by the largest states, the founders of the Republic devised a scheme that protects all.
Thus was born the electoral college, which gave even the smallest states a voice in the selection of our leaders. Had they not done this places like California (the largest unfenced insane asylum in the world) and New York (the haven of our nation's largest criminal syndicates composed of union leaders, political barons and corporate thieves) would have virtual control of this country. Does anyone in his or her right mind want something like this.
Yes, it is true that a candidate for president can amass a majority of the total vote and lose, but it is imperative that our president be the choice of all of our people, not those concentrated in the major population centers. While one-man, one-vote sounds good, on paper it isn't worth a continental.
If I am not mistaken it would take a constitutional amendment to change this system and I daresay that this will never happen. You may hand a person a knife, but you will not get him to slash his throat. There are many small states in this nation and their leadership is not inclined to carry out their own death wishes.

It has certainly become an eyesore and I'm sure that it is not stable after being lifted off the ground. In the next few weeks Edgefield will have a great deal of Masters traffic coming through our beautiful town. Let's hope they don't stop at the light at the corner of Bacon and Main and see that mess! RE Post: I have heard  a lot of comments about all the innocent people who have been "destroyed" by the US
government's wire tap program under the Patriot act. Could, or would someone name me just one innocent
person who has been damaged by this activity that has diverted unknown terrorist attacks against this country and its citizens.

In response to the ignorant post above, I am not against the government using wiretaps to find terrorists. However, the government (Karl Rove et al.) used information gathered illegally on US citizens to covertly attack  any Democrats in many state and local political elections around the country. There is lots of information that is public that tells how Karl Rove used information gthered through the auspices of the "Patriot Act" to smear candidates in state and county elections where the Dems had held a seat or had taken over an elected position from Repubs during the admin of "Dubya". Heck politics is a dirty game, but when elected officials break the law, someone has to draw the line, and say, "Hey, you are supposed to uphold the Constitution and serve and protect all people, not just those registered in the same political party as yours.

And to the observer of the young person using the EBT card, maybe he was buying groceries for an elderly,
handicapped Food Stamp receiver. Or he could have bought the card illegally from some one by buying it at a discount from a Food Stamp receiver. It is quite common for EBT cardholders to sell $200 of benefits on a card at a reduced price, let's say for $150 to get quick cash to pay for something they are not allowed to buy with the EBT card. If you are that concerned about the person having the card, then follow them outside, get the tag number of the card they are in, if they are in an automobile, and do your civic duty and report them to the local DSS office, or EBT Fraud Hotline. There is a $500 standing reward for any person who reports EBT fraud and it is verified as a true fraud occurrence. If we want to stop the fraud, then report it, don't just complain about it to Edgefielddaily.

However, I do  have a bit of advice for the so called food patrol.  Matthew 7:2-5 Do not judge or you to will be judged. For in the same way you judge others , you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

I do have some comments and suggestions for the third annual race.  First of all, lower the first place prize, and break the winning into age groups and genders.  This race is for our community and the people, who work and live in Edgefield County.   This race should not be for some professional runners,  who just come here to win the prize money and next leave.  They don't know who the race is benefiting nor giving anything back to our Community.  Take a look at the top ten runners minus the top three for the past two races.  They are all from our community, our schools, and our neighborhoods.  They are from Edgefield County, and they should be recognized for the community support.

To the person complaining about the lack of support for Bettis Academy Recreation look in the mirror if you live in this area. Until fairly recent years, recreation in the county received nominal funding from county government. Individuals and local businesses sponsored and volunteered for their respective programs. From what I have seen, with out many county government handouts there would be no recreation program in Bettis.

I have attended many games at Bettis and always note the lack of maintenance in general when compared to Edgefield.  The soccer and baseball fields and the general grounds In Edgefield are well maintained and reflect a pride in the community. The Town of Edgefield has always(before there was a well funded county Rec. Dept.) provided assistance in maintaining the facilities in Edgefield. There are also countless hours spent by volunteers and coaches making Edgefield facilities top notch. Also, in Edgefield & Johnston local businesses and individuals have had a long history of supporting youth sports in their respective towns. This support has been solicited by volunteer coaches since I can remember. I don’t see the financial commitment from local businesses or individuals in the Bettis facility. Maybe it is there and just not apparent.

The point I am trying to make is that, community involvement, not government handouts, will ultimately decide how successful each recreation facility becomes.   The best analogy is our school system. Any teacher will tell you that no matter how much money government throws at the school system, only support in the homes and community will yield vast improvement. So if you don’t like what you see at Bettis, work a little harder and don’t look for someone to do for you what  you can do for yourself.

What a great and truthful editorial about the 'Rabid' Racist' Reverend Wright/'Osama' Obama connection. The
liberal media has given 'Osama' Obama a pass. If John McCain had ever attended a 'White' church where
anti-black rhetoric was preached, there would be Hell to pay. But,'Osama' Obama will wiggle out of his
association with 'anti-American' Wright, because the liberal media will let him. It is obvious 99 9/10 percent of Black Americans have voted and will vote for 'Osama' Obama in the November Presidential election.  If OJ Simpson, Councilman Dorn or 'Professor' Bibbs were running for President, the Black American support percentage would probably be the same. How scary is this thought? 'Osama' Obama can deny all the anti-white preachings he has obviously agreed with for the past 20 years as preached by Anti-American Wright. White Americans and Hispanic Americans need to join ranks (regardless of party affiliation) and make sure this 'Muslim' in Christian clothing (Obama) does not get into the White House.

The ignorance of the citizens of Edgefield County, including the readers of EdgefieldDaily, never ceases to amaze me. Some of the posts on Wandering Minds makes Democrats sound like some kind of Fright Night
movie character. The actual evidence and information that exists is contrary to this belief. The Repubs have diminshed our civil freedoms immensely. The Repubs have used information from illegal wiretaps to destroy people who are citizens of the US and not of Arab or Middle East persuasion. Karl Rove and his politcal machine has used this information, supposedly gathered on "terrorists" and basically made up lies about US
citizens just becasue they were not Repubs.
Even the editor of this news outlet has made comments about the Dems and how we will lose our civil freedoms if Dems are elected. That is hogwash. We have lost more civil rights under "Dubya" than any other time period in our history. Not to mention the financial crisis caused by this admin, due to loosening banking regulations so that anyone could get a mortgage. And if you do not believe it was because of "Dubya's" policies, then why is the federal gov't bailing out the big banks, like Bear Stearns, that are failing and on the verge of bankruptcy. The financial crisis that this country is facing is a direct result of the non-existent foreign
policy of Dubya's admin. Whether you like it or not, we need foreign trade. Try going to Wal-Mart and buying anything if we did not trade with China and other southeastern Asian countries. There would be nothing on the shelves. And if there is anything left on the shelves it would be way to expensive for anyone who reads this post to afford. Wake up Edgefield County and open your eyes to what is going on in the world. It affects you whether you think so or not.

There is no way the officer could have known if the dog was "smiling" at him or if the dog was attempting to remove a chunk of his leg. Dogs getting hit by a car don't get this much attention, why are we making such a big deal of this? There are no winners here, the dogs owners should have been more responsible.

Editor's note: Readers need to understand that the officer was called to a report of an "aggressive dog" that would not let one person out of their home and two people that were trapped in a car. Regardless if the dog was friendly or not, the officer arrived with the mindset of a large aggressive dog. When it approached and did not respond to his shouted commands he fired. It was It was unfortunate to say the least, but I cannot blame the officer for taking the steps he took in the seconds that transpired after exiting his patrol car.

Thank you for publishing my response to your article.  To the person who said, "The officer used the only tool he had available," what about the canister of "Mace" or "OC" spray the officers carry?  Even meter readers carry dog deterrent sprays.  What about his nightstick?  The animal control officer has a long catch pole used to catch "unruly" animals. She was called after the fact, because I spoke to her when I called at 1:45am for the details.  Shouldn't she have been sent first if they were willing to call her afterwards?  As for rabies, Gunner's vaccinations were all current and he had the tags to prove it.  The only language he was trained in was English.  And as I said, I'm not looking for the resignation/termination from the officer, but I feel he over-reacted and I would hope he would think twice in the next situation.  No punishment he would receive would give me my friend back anyhow.

Editor's note: I am very sorry for your loss. Our pets are a part of our family as well. I have always assured anyone responding to an article, if it pertains to them, unlimited space to air their side of the account. That is why EdgefieldDaily.com is the county's only interactive media outlet. Reports are just that - The who, what, when, where and how. The rest is for the reader to discern. I will never alllow a personal opinion to be a part of any news report published.

Our Dane will bark and growl loudly and others would not doubt consider his actions "aggressive" if they did not know that is his way a playing. Imagine a cute little puppy not more than 4 pounds growling and carrying on playing with a chew toy. That is cute. They do the same thing when they are full grown and 160 to 170 pounds.

This is in regards to animal control and the responsibilites. I have call animal control on several occassions,as has my mother. The first question is do you have the animals penned up,because if you don't there's nothing I (animal control) can do. End result we usually catch the animal, feed and water it until we can get it to a shelter ourself! I have yet to hear of anyone getting any result from animal control. And maybe if someone has, it has to do with who you are in Edgefield County. I think we have seen this type of treatment across the board in all areas around here in Edgefield. And it's not about being white or black. It's about last names and money as to the treatment you recieve! We live in a small town where alot of people are still small minded.

Editor's note: Animal Control is one person covering over 507 square miles and responding to calls from 25,000 people. It has nothing to do with who you are. It is hard to be effective when you begin the day with a backlog of calls and more coming in every day. There are only so many traps and so many calls she can respond to on any given day. If you want to complain, direct your complaints to the County Council who does not properly fund the Sheriff's Office so they can effectively do their job.

What a shame. Sounds like the officer needed to be better trained in how to handle animal calls or the animal control officer should have been called. Just because an animal is large-does not mean it is dangerous. Did the
officer try to call to the dog and motion for him to come, how about tell him to sit or use the word no. I don't think he did anything except panic when the dog approached. I know the dog and his family. He was a very
friendly dog and was like a child to the couple who owned him. He was a beautiful dog-not some skinny, skanky looking stray that you see running around the county-and he had a collar on, with tags. And to the reader who wrote about rabies-give me a break. You need to be better educated about rabies.

Editor's note: I know this officer personally and know that he would not fire on any animal unless he felt it was the only way out of a situation when it happened. The only people that feel worse about it than he does are the owners of the dog that was shot.

I just read your "'Wandering Minds" note about sitting in on the jury trial on Wednesday March 12th, 2008.   There were twelve people on that jury doing what the judge instructed them to do.  Deliberate, weigh the facts and come to a unanimous verdict for guilty or not guilty.   That is what happened this morning on the 13th.  Every person on that jury took the judge's charges seriously.  I was on that jury.  I have the highest respect for each person that served with me.  No person took it lightly concerning the duty we were charged with.  Each person has to come to his or her own conclusion about the facts in any case they are seated as a juror on.    We struggled with the facts in the case and we came to a unanimous  verdict.  I think at the end of the day today we all can be proud of the decision that was made.   I'm not sure how you made the statement, "one knucklehead" as you so disrespectfully put it took a little longer to come to a  verdict that they could be comfortable and at peace with themselves about.  Was it stated in court that we had a deadlock of 11 to 1 before we were dismissed yesterday?  The foreman sent a note to the judge to this effect and he may have shared that with the courtroom but we didn't hear that.   I respectfully ask that you please be considerate of how difficult the last two days have been for the jurors in this trial.

I think that you do a great service as the editor of Edgefield Daily.  I have never met you so I didn't recognize you in the courtroom but please be assured that each and every juror on that trial weighed the evidence, worked together as a team and can sleep tonight with a clear conscience that we did a service to our county in the last two days.

Editor's note: I do not dispute your claims. However, the case should not have required more than fifteen minutes of deliberations to find the idiot guilty. If the verdict could be reached in twenty minutes on Friday morning when deliberations were continued, it could have been reached in twenty minutes after the case was released to the jury on Thursday. I stand by my statements. It was a "cut and dry" case. The name of the defendant is not being used so not to cloud potential jurors in an upcoming case for the same individual.

In response to your story about the "aggressive dog" that was shot by Edgefield police, that dog's name was Gunner.  He was a 4-5 year old German Shepard we adopted a few years ago and was never aggressive a day in his life.  His problem was that he was too friendly.  He lived with my wife and I on our horse farm.  He loved to run and play.  He was a large dog and to those who didn't know him I'm sure he was an imposing figure.  He stayed in his pen during the day and would accompany my wife to the barn to feed the horses in the evenings.  He was very obedient, but loved people so much that he would run to anyone to greet them.  It seems that this trait is what got him killed.  Wandering off has not been a regular thing with him.  As I said, he stayed in his pen all day and was supervised when let out at night.  He would come home with my wife from feeding the horses and would lie by the front door.  About a month ago, he wandered off one evening and a concerned citizen phoned the police.  By the time they arrived, the caller had seen that the dog wasn't dangerous and was just curious.  The officer called me and told me where to pick up the dog.  When I arrived, there were two officers there with the people who called.  They all remarked how friendly he was, even the officers.  I apologized to all for the inconvenience and took him home.  We have been extra careful since then to keep him close to the house in the evenings.  On the night in question, I was out of town and had called home about 10:30pm.  While on the phone with my wife, she walked to the door to check on him to make sure he was still lying by the door.  He was and she threw him a biscuit to reward him.  It wasn't until she went to put him up for the night that she realized he had wandered off.  She got in her car and drove around the neighborhood looking for him.  She actually saw the police car pull into the apartments as she drove by calling for him, but thought nothing of it at the time.  When she returned home, she got the call from the police about the shooting.  It upset her terribly that this could have been avoided if she had known to follow that policeman.  I'm sure when that officer pulled up, Gunner was going to greet him like he greeted all cars and people that pulled into our yard.  There is no way he was showing his teeth in an aggressive manner.  The only time his teeth ever showed was when he smiled his friendly smile.  Now I am not placing blame on the officer, but I do feel he over-reacted.  He had a call of an aggressive dog and then saw a dog approaching him as he arrived.  It is partly my fault for allowing him to wander off, but I should have been called to pick him up from the pound and perhaps pay a fine and not have been called to be told that my fr iend had been killed.  If I had kept him locked up 24/7, he'd still be alive, but what kind a life does a dog have if he can't get out?  He had an ID collar and a microchip to help him to be found in case he did wander off.  We tried to take every precaution to protect our dog.  We all try to keep our animals at home, but should we have to worry that if our dog gets out that he will be killed?  Why wasn't the animal control officer called to deal with this?  She is trained to deal with animals and would have seen he wasn't dangerous.  I'm sorry for those people who were inconvenienced by being scared of a dog they didn't know.  He was a large dog, but was never aggressive.  I have several witnesses to attest to this fact, including two Edgefield police officers that met Gunner the other night.  I would never own an animal that was dangerous.  Too much liability in this day and time.  I write this response only in the hope that someone else in the county doesn't have to get that call to find out their friend has been killed.  The situation could have been handled differently.

Editor's note: This post was allowed to exceed the word limitations because it was verified the writer was the owner of the dog shot. EdgefieldDaily.com can only report what is provided and to allow the owner his side of the story was only fitting. As the owner of a Great Dane I can agree some would consider my dog as "aggressive" if he were barking and approaching though he would not bite anyone.

I hope they sent this dog off for rabies testing, it sounded unbalanced. If the "Man" and town/county spent money enforcing the leash laws this type of event would be less common. The officer used the only available weapon he had to protect himself and the public and I find him faultless in his action. It does sound like we need more animal control officers and provide the other officers with additional equipment and knowledge when dealing with stray animals. This is stretching it but in defense of the dog, the only legitimate reason I would understand the dogs behavior toward the officer is that some of the Sheppard breeds are trained in other languages such as German, Dutch and others depending on the country of origin. Maybe in the dogs mind it felt threatened at the shouting. Unless they find the owner and determine its history we will never know what caused its aggressive behavior. If it is rabies, then they should let the public know.

I've now eaten at the New Mexican Restaurant twice.  The first time was their grand opening night.  They had a few expected "startup" glitches, but the food was fresh and tasty.  The second time a few weeks later, the food they serve is still fresh and still tasty.  I'm glad they've opened so that we have other dining options.  I wish them success and welcome them as a new business to Edgefield.

A good and respected friend told me yesterday that Greg Anderson is running for Shane Massey's senate seat " As a democrat ". I don't dispute your comment that both of these men are Good men and will make for a good Senator… However, shane Massey didn't have to stoop a low as to run as a democrat.  While I vote for the Person in Most cases and not the Party, we all know the reason Grag Anderson is running as a democrat ( Same reason Tommy Moore masqueraded as a Democrat for so long ) to get the Black and Hispanic vote ! While he may make a good senator, this shows his true character. Whatever it takes to get elected at what ever cost and throw dignity, character and other values out the window. It also shows he lacks good decision making ability and we DON’T need that in our Senator. I have gone from a fly below the Radar Shane Massey supporter to encouraging everbody I come in contact with In the county to Support Shane and I do come in Contact with a lot of people in the County.

If you have already addressed this question, I apologize.  Why is there going to be an overhaul of the landscaping on the square?  I can understand doing away with the fountain if it doesn't work and just continues to cause problems, but please tell me that the trees that are currently growing there are not going to be pulled down.  I see absolutely no reason to relandscape the square unless somebody needs some money.  I was always taught that it was a sin to pull down a healthy tree.

Editor's note: The trees are not growing at the same pace and that is said to be the reason for their removal.

Editor's post: I spent all day – from 11 am until 7 pm- sitting in on a trial Wednesday. I am not going to get into who is on trial for a reason that will become evident at a much later date, but it has made me believe we should have an IQ test for those who sit on a jury. Here is the case in a nutshell. The accused was seen by three witnesses committing the crime. There is photographic and video evidence. Two witnesses, including the victim, recounted the entire event. The accused is the only person, other than the witnesses, that was present at the time the crime was committed and that fact is not in dispute. But one knucklehead on the jury wants to find this person not guilty.

I get the feeling this person would vote for Norman Dorn because he is a smart man.

Editor's note: Though privy to information about certain people stating they will seek elective office, until they announce officially I am bound to withhold their names. At this time four challenges are said to be forthcoming. I do not know if all four will actually file for office. A fifth recently retracted their intentions to run for a seat. I must say I wish the person would reconsider, it would have been a landslide win in that particular race.

Glad to see someone new running for County Council for the Westside.  The Westside district had been competing with the Northside district for idiocy for the last 20 years.  First the Kitchens woman, then Danny Bishop, followed by the husband of the Kitchens woman.  We did have a little break in numb nuts with Bill Vaughn.  When Mr. Vaughn wouldn't conform to the antics of Adams and Kneece they quickly orchestrated his demise.  Mr. Ashcraft will get my vote if he can truly stand up and be a man and not cow down to the rest of the herd like his predecessors.

Editor's note: Bill Vaughn failed to file as a candidate for his second term. He then later filed as a petition candidate and was defeated by Mr. Kitchens. Had both filed as Republicans they would have squared off in the primary and things might have been different.

I tried the new Mexican restaurant, in Edgefield, and thought the food was very good. The wait staff were very attentive to our needs, with good overall service. I tried a dish called, Three Amigos that had a small slice of grilled steak, a small piece of grilled chicken breast, about 8 or 10 grilled shrimp, with grilled onion and pineapple on top and a cheese sauce poured overall. See if you can find a dish like that at a Taco Bell. I like to get a fast taco at Taco Bll, sometimes, myself, but this place and Taco Bell are nowhere near alike. It's a totally different type of dining.

SCE&G evidently needs to start an employee fitness program. I was outside walking my dog this morning when the "gentleman" pulled INTO my yard to get out to read the meter. It must be to far for them to park in the driveway, and walk across my front yard to get to my meter, instead they use a small drive that is supposed to be used for access to the utility pole by the road, not for access to my front yard. When I told him they were not to drive into my yard, he looked at me like I was stupid. Maybe next time I let my dog off leash, and see how fast he moves.

3 things to ponder:
Cows -
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that our government can track a single cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington? And they track her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

The Constitution -
They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're not using it anymore.

The Ten Commandments -
The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this: You cannot post 'Thou Shalt Not Steal,' 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery', and 'Thou Shalt Not Lie' in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment.

That's all. I don't like to ponder too long.   It makes me nervous.

Editor's Post: Once again EdgefieldDaily.com has been first with announcements of candidates seeking political office. Yesterday it was the surprise candidacy of Greg Anderson for the District 25 Senate Seat as a Democrat and today it is Rodney Ashcraft, Everett Kitchens, and David Franklin. Other candidates will be announcing their candidacies for office over the next few days. If you want the news first there is only one place you can find it - EdgefieldDaily.com.

In other news, an Edgefield Police Officer was forced to shoot another dog just after midnight. A full report will be online on Thursday. I do not have the breed of dog shot at this time. In the many incidents of a law enforcement officer shooting a dog it has been a Pit Bull in all but two cases.

I will say that I think Pit Bulls as a breed are getting a bad rap. It is not the fault of the dog as to how an owner raises the animal. I think a Pit Bull can be a loving family pet, however some owners raise them for nefarious purposes and that is what makes news. Twenty years ago it was Dobermans and before that German Shepherds. There is a link, but it is not canine.

I have not found a single case that the officers were unjustified in shooting the dog or dogs in question.

Tonight at the School board meeting they took the time to honor many students who had achieved many different honors. I do hope this website prints the pictures of the kids that were taken that night and of the Administrators who spoke very highly and also very kindly of the students. I had fears about Dr Crenshaw and of Ms Murrell. But tonight along with other things I have seen have shown me that I was wrong. They have the best intrest of the children at heart and if given the proper support they will do well. But that is not what causes me to write this, there was something else there that impressed me more. It was this, at the school board meeting, a meeting that they are paid good money to attend, James Bibbs did not even bother to show up. He flat out snubbed the best kids in the system. He showed them how much he respects them. And Ms Viola Jackson was no better, Oh she did attend at least part of the meeting, she chose to wait outside until the part honoring the kids was over. These people so often clam that they deserve “respect” Sorry to inform you of this, but you got to give it before you get it. No man or woman has ever been honored for what they got, only for what they have given. Those two deserve no respect or honor..

Bettis Academy area speeders-to and from Edgefield, drivers seem to go faster and faster, and ride you bumper more and more the closer you get to the Bettis Academy area. A turning lane has been added at Bettis Academy Road, but LOTS of folks use that as a passing lane, and half the time someone is merging into the turning lane. Plus, the speed limit is 35 MPH, but I've never seen it enforced.

The problems don't stop there. The Bettis Ballfield brings in folks during baseball and football seasons. But Nicholson Road is a nightmare regardless of what season it is! All hours of the day AND night you can see/hear cars streak up the road...that's all they are, a streak-you may be able to determine the car's color if you're lucky. And what's the deal with all the out-of-state plates?  (The one's that are driven daily by locals, who I KNOW have NEVER lived anywhere else!!!)  And a select number of cars seem to think Nicholson Road is their personal road/raceway and you're not allowed on it! A few calls to the Edgefield Police might help, but it only seems to make those drivers worse.  Did I mention there are LOTS of wrecks/deaths on this road? And I'm sure some of those go unerported as a friend/passerby-ers pull them out of the ditch!

And P.S. I've even noticed a FAKE S.C. license plates!!!  I noticed the plametto tree looked odd, then I noticed it looked laminated and the numbers didn't petrude like on metal plates! Does the law enforcement know about this???

Editor's note: They do now.

The person responding to my post about Johnstons' mayor sounded about as mature as a 12 year old. No.1 Your reasoning about crooked, dishonest people was childish and accepting of dishonesty. You have a choice of whether to work for or be a crook yourself! No. 2 You must know more than I do about the mayor because I never said he was gay. But since you want to defensively infer he is, what a person does behind closed doors does matter if the person they are doing it with is a minor. Are you indicating this is O.K. if it's your foster child? No.3 When you hold a public office you cannot, morally and rightfully, do favors for anyone, related or not. Nothing should have been done to help this person. All the mayor did was let everyone know his stance on crime. No.4 Admitting guilt and cooperating should not deserve such a drastic change in sentencing. If the judge thought he deserved 6 years before the mayor spoke up he should never have reduced the sentence any more than a year. His record should have spoke enough. I have heard many young people with that attitude. Well, I told the truth so why should I have to pay the consequences? What is this teaching children? No.5 Your "everybody does it" attitude sounde like my kids excuses when they were little. No.6 Just what is your relationship with this mayor that makes you such an observant, vocal defender of him? You obviously don't have children!

Editor's note: I am unaware of such a case last week, but I am aware of a case similar to that within the last three years. You cannot be sent to prison until sentenced. If you continue to put off your trial you could spend years in jail awaiting trial depending on the charge. Steven Barnes has been sitting in the Detention Center for several years awaiting trial on murder and other charges. I believe his crime dates back 2001 or 2002.

Just how many breaks does the mayor of Johnston think a person should get? This so-called foster son of his, ( if that's what they're calling it these days), Henry Rhodes, has a criminal record a mile long, starting when he was a very young man! He's had leniency all his life! He's never had to pay for any of his crimes and that's why he kept it up. As soon as he's out he will be right back at it. He always has! I was shocked to know Judge Johnson actually reduced the sentence from 6 years to 18 months! As I always say, in this county, it's who you are, who you know. or what you know about someone's business. Always a bunch of crooks. I'm sure Police Chief Aston remembers having a complaint filed against him, by Willie Campbell, over a time when he was arresting Henry Rhodes, in the past. It's time Willie Campbell let his baby boy grow up and accept punishment he deserves. How long is he going to continue changing his diaper for him? He obviously didn't instill any honesty or morals in this man when he was young. What did he instill in him?  After this every person who is charged with a crime should park thereself in his office and see if they can get the mayor to go to bat for them! Makes you wonder if there may be a guilty conscience talking. Oh, you have to have one to feel guilty, don't you? I have a problem with the way the judge dealt with this, also. With this mans record in front of him, someone asking for leniency shouldn't have been a factor. That's why most of Edgefield County's criminals are right back on the street. The sentences you see come out of the ourtroom the most are being sentenced to a lot of years but it's then reduced to a few months or time served. The police do thier job arresting criminals and then someone talks to a judge and they are right back on the streets for the police to deal with again. Wake up judges! Your "do a favor system" isn't working! You just make things harder for law enforcement.

I've read peoples comments concerning no parking near the court house. Its bad and chances are most of it is taken up by employees. There seems to be little to no parking for customer or employees.  My complaint with parking however comes during elections. I vote at the American Legion downtown, and I can hardly ever get handicapped parking at the lodge, WHY? because everyone that works there has taken up the front row parking. WHy don't they park at the building adjacent to the Legion? It happens EVERY TIME there is an election, the parking lot looks full, but its full because of the workers not voters. Move your car and leave parking for those of us that want to be able to case a ballot.

With all the pit bulls that get shot around here I have to wonder why there are so many. I've heard that there are dog fights that take place in the county. Do you know if this is true or if the Sheriff or the police are looking into this?

Editor's note: I have received emails that indicate others believe there is a dog fighting ring somewhere, but no one has ever given me information on a location or names of persons involved. I have not had a conversation with the Sheriff regarding the existence of a dog fighting ring in the county. I have had others that claim there are cock fighting rings as well. They are just as general and non-specific.

What happened to the story on Johnstons' mayor, Willie Campbell, going to court and asking Judge Johnson for leniency in the case against Henry Rhodes? In the piece I read he said he was asking for help for a former foster child of his. So that's what they're calling it these days? I couldn't believe the way his sentencing was changed! Anyone who knows of Henry Rhodes, and all area law enforcement, know that he has been given leniency in all the crimes he has been commiting all of his life! Says a whole lot for his so-called foster father, doesn't it. Does anyone out there ever remember of a mayor in all of Edgefield County, stepping forward and asking for leniency for a criminal with the criminal background he has? Every person charged, in Johnston, from now on should demand the same favoritism he showed this criminal! I remember a time when He wasn't mayor that he filed a complaint against his present police chief over this same subject.Like I always say, in Edgefield County, when it comes to the court system, it's who you are, who you know, and what you know about who! I don't remember if the piece I saw on this was on the front page or if it was in Wandering Minds, but it was there and now it's gone. What Happened? Also, congratulations on three years of enlightening the good people of this county on the true people who are our leaders. You're doing a great job! Now answer my question, please?

Some people need to take a test before owning a dog; the man who owned the pit-bull that was shot would have failed, and earned a stupid card as well. How many dogs do you know who run away when being fed? Makes you wonder if he was telling the truth. Why didn't he pursue the dogs to bring them home? Most people breed for an even tempered animal, his sound a little too aggressive. Why would you want an aggressive Pit-bull that attacks other dog, fighting maybe? I hope the police find cause to remove the other dog from his incompetent hands, as well as any other creatures that may be depending on him for sustenance. One more thing if I have the right street in mind Rosa Hill is not too far from W.E.Parker Elementary School. At least the kids are protected by a fence.

In regards to Norman Dorn, I had him in the 8th grade. I can't say as a  teacher, because he didn't teach! I remember him at the front of the class prop on a lab table sleeping. We had science workbooks and you did everything on your own. At the beginning of the year he let everyone know that no-one would make higher than a D on their report card. I guess that was because he was incapable of teaching anyone to receive any higher grade.  As for the teacher that would hit boys in their private, I have to defend him on that one. It was (name removed), 8th grade Math teacher. And although I think (the teacher's) actions were sick, he was a good Math-Pre-Algebra teacher and would work with the students individually. So when Mr. Dorn speaks of impostors maybe he needs to take a look at himself. How long did he pose as a teacher and now a council man?

In regards to Joe Norman Dorn the teacher...I was a student at W.E. Parker over 25 years ago.  I still remember some of the degrading comments of "Mr" Dorn.  I also remember the chalk board erasers that were constantly being hurled at the students.  What stands out the most were the comments he would make about the parents of the students.  Making children cry by insulting their parents is about as childish as you can get.

Joe Norman the councilman...I hope there will come a time when the "LIGHT BULB" in his "HEAD" will finally turn on so that he will see the disservice he his doing to his community and to our county by remaining in office.  His stepping down would be his greatest act as a councilman.  I also hope that "Mr" High-Hat Burton would do the same thing where his public office is concerned.

I laughed a lot listening to the audio of Norman Dorn speaking during the Tuesday night Edgefield council meeting. This impostor of a councilman is an embarrassment to Edgefield and to himself. Remember, according to a previous poster, Dorn as a teacher (is accused of) used to hit white male students between the legs with a yard stick. How sick is that? I can't believe any self respecting council person would be seen in the same room with this fool. Why was a sheriff's deputy at the meeting? Does Dorn believe someone will attack or argue with him? For you Edgefield history buffs...Dorn personifies the caliber of person put into political office by the post civil war federal government. Research this untold portion of history and you will understand Edgefield county is under Reconstruction by such people as Mr. Dorn.

I want to start off by saying that this is the owner of the pit-bull that got attacked.  You say that people have complained about my dog. Well if they have they haven't gone the proper route because not once has a cop or animal control officer come talked to me. For the most part my dog is in the house or on his chain. If I am outside I will let him run a little. I am not saying he doesn't go into the neighbors yard or anything but all the neighbors immediately surrounding me told me they don't mind.  There is a difference of letting your dog run for a few minutes or even a few hours but the dogs that attacked mine run 24 hours a day 365 days a year because their owners don't take care of them.  Also I didn't try hiding the fact that he wasn't on his chain when attacked and that is part of the reason animal control said they couldn't do anything.  If the animal control officer wants to write me a ticket I will be glad to take it as long as everyone else that lets their dogs run gets one too.  As far as the strays I would suggest there owners do something or it will be like the person stated shoot, bury, and shut up.

Well, the black leaders are at it again, demanding reparations out of the U.S. Treasury for the past criminal acts of slavery. Someone needs to remind these people that this nation has had a complete turnover in population over the past 150 years and few remain with ancestry directly connected to slavery. If this shamless atrocity should ever come to pass we should deduct all the money spent on welfare checks, free medical care and the many other freebies that have gone almost exclusively to blacks over the past century. I would bet if that is done the blacks would owe the rest of us money.

You let your dog out of your house to roam the neighborhood, your dog got attacked by other people who let their dogs roam the neighborhood, and you want to shoot your neighbors dogs because your dog was roaming the neighborhood. Maybe they should shoot your stray dog. I think the animal control officer should come write you a ticket because you just admitted to breaking the county leash law.

As a poster has mentioned regarding the fatal Richmond County police chase, the instruction the officer received was to “stop it at the state line”, however, when the suspect exited Broad Street, he didn’t go in the direction of the state line.  I believe that the officer was justified in continuing the chase.  He hadn’t violated any orders and was carrying out his obligation to the citizens of Augusta, and the public in general.  Remember, we are discussing these actions after the fact.  Had this policeman known (as we do now) how this chase would end, my bet is that he would have disobeyed any order to continue the chase.
To the poster who wanted to see the officer charged…please rethink your position.  Surely, you can see who is to blame.  What if the suspect had decided to shoot the officer before the chase began, but missed, striking and killing an innocent bystander?  Would there be any doubt as to who should shoulder the blame?  Mr. Clark should face capital murder charges.

In regards to the gentlemen with the injured pit-bull, I am sorry your child’s pet was hurt because of someone else’s selfish behavior. You are right; dogs are what you put into them no matter the breed.

If they won’t keep the dog contained properly then they don’t care about enough to have it. I lived in Aiken County before moving here, they were short of animal control officers at the time. (About 15 years ago). I was told by an officer to “Shoot, Shovel and Shut up” I guess that is still in effect. My concern too was for the children of the neighborhood.

The owners of these animals don’t have the right to complain if they don’t fallow the leash laws. If a domesticated animal causes an automobile accident its owner is libel, not the driver of the car.

For the uninformed, Rabies is contagious and fatal, which why we vaccinate against. I know dogs, cats, and horses get the vaccine probably other animals also just ask your vet. Yes I am a dog lover

I saw (the Editor) pulling in at Sportman's (Corner) this morning with mud all over your truck. Been doing some mudboggin this weekend? You gonna do a report on yourself?

Editor's note: I received three such comments, not including one (jokingly) when I pulled up next to the Mayor of Edgefield this morning. The mud came from searching for a lost dog in our area and I was forced to drive down Scupin Road (which is still being destroyed by those who care little for our county roads) during the search. Some of it also came from driving on family property which has just recently been logged. And before anyone sends in a comment saying I should be charged for placing a foreign substance on the roadway, I exited the area of Scupin Road via Thurmond Road (a dirt road) so all the mud was off my tires before entering the roadway. I will also point out I do not own a four-wheel drive and I have street tires, not mud tires.

You know I try and do things the right way most of the time and yes I am not perfect and that doesn't always happen!  I have been having problems with neighbors dogs over here where I live on Delaughter Drive. I have call the Sheriffs office 3 times this year and complained to the dog catcher.  Well last night I let my Pitbull outside for a few minutes to use the bathroom and when I went to let him in he could barely walk and was covered in blood.  At first thought, I thought he was hit by a car but later realized he had been attacked.  We rushed him to the Emergency Vet and they looked at him and said he was in real bad shape but could be saved. I had to pay $400 just for the night to get him treatment.  When I came home I called the Sheriffs office again and asked for a Deputy to come do a report.  He came out and told me he would do a report but couldn't do anything because I didn't physically see the dogs do this to him.  He wouldn't go to the neighbors house and see if their dogs were covered in blood or anything and he said he would make sure the dog catcher follows up with me in the morning.  Well the vet called this morning before she did and told me that my dog has sustained over 40 bites and they ranged from smaller canine bite marks to larger canine bite marks.  When the dog catcher called she said the same thing that she couldn't do anything. I asked her what we had to do wait for them to attack one of the many children in the area before we did anything.  I finally told her that I would take care of the problem myself and stated that the deer rifle was the best problem solver because if they would do this to a dog what would they do to an innocent child.  She at that point told me it was NOT illegal for me to kill dogs on my property if they are causing problems with my dog, tearing up stuff, or being a nuisance.  I guess now a days you have to just take care of your own problems because the people we pay to do it don't give a (darn) until its their pet or kid that gets hurt.  On top of the dogs in question running astray.  They don't have any shots or don't ever get any vet care. They are disgusting looking and from what I heard they already had to have a few of them put down because of Rabies, but they still have 6 or 7 just running around. I guess the main reason I wrote this was to let everyone know about the dangerous dogs out here on Delaughter Drive and to let you know that not all pitbulls are the agressor and sometimes they are on the recieving end too. My dog has never shown a sign of agression except for when another pitbull came up to my daughter and wife and growled at the pet store.  But he was protecting his family.  My two year old daughter plays with him all the time with me right there and he is gentle as can be with her.  Him and I can be fighting and when she comes up he will stop because he knows shes there.  Its all in how they are raised and trained. But ANY dog can show aggresion under the right circumstances.

Editor's note: I allowed this post even though it exceeded word limitations (300 words). I would advise you that you must see the dogs attacking your pets or property in order to be justified in shooting them. If the evidence on the scene does not support your claim you could end up being arrested. The photos sent with your comment will not be posted, but I will say they show a vicious attack. However, if you did not see the dogs that attacked your dog there is nothing law enforcement can do after the fact. It could have been your neighbors dog or coyotes, which have been known to attack family pets. I would suggest you keep a rational frame of mind while dealing with the situation. Especially after making your intentions known here.

This link was provided for fallen officers:
I think that the education my child receives at MES is perfectly fine...the lunch room however is another story. It is nothing new for me to hear from my 5th grader that what was on the lunch menu is not what he was served, almost on a daily basis. Added to that, at times he has had to stand in line for 20+ minutes for these pitiful meals (red beans and sausage NOTE: sausage = hotdog bits). The straw that broke the camel's back for me, though, was hearing that they served UNDERCOOKED chicken. That is just NOT acceptable.
I don't think the principal is to blame for this, but I'd like to know who I can speak to. I went to public school in EC and we certainly ate better than that. I'm not asking for my child to be served a 5 course, 5 star meal but I do expect for him to be provided with a palatable, cooked to completion meal. And, I fully expect him to be fed what is listed on the lunch menu for each day. We determine the night before whether or not we'll pack a lunch based on what is being served, and it really bothers me that most days he is served whatever they can find in the freezer. There just isn't any good reason for the cafeteria crew to not know how much to cook for the students each day.

Editor's note: I would suggest you contact your School Board member. Since you mention Merriwether Elementary that would be Scott Chitty. An attempt to get his email address from the School District web site was unavailable at 1:34 am. The District Office can be reached by calling 803-275-4607.

I am SICK AND TIRED of not being able to park around town (Edgefield) when they have court. I guess I will have to park a mile away to get to work all week. Why don't they do something about this?

Editor's note: General Sessions Court will be underway for two weeks, not one. I am not sure what can be done to alleviate the parking problems.

re: "I saw on the news where an innocent woman was killed because Richmond County cops were chasing some fool making him run a red light. They said the cops had the tag number so why did they keep chasing this guy knowing he would probably kill somebody? They should arrest the cops for murder...."

I watched the news and saw the words on the screen and they told him "stop it at the state line and call in the tags and file the warrants".

I would say that the Deputy did all he could and it is horrible that someone died due to that stupid idiot Jamie Ray Clark driving like that and running the red light! Nobody wishes death on somebody, especially an innocent bystander and mother of two!

I just really do not think "we" have the right to judge the Deputy on this one.  Just my opinion of course, but I think there are way better things to do with your time than judging people.

I live out on a county maintained  dirt  road too. I am sick and tired of these people ripping and raring on them It not only makes a mess, but it scares me and my children. When their Dad isn't home, it is even worse. The pathetic thing is that they stop in front of your house, like they are casing the joint. NOT COOL DUDE!

My comment is about the chase in Richmond county. The young man does need to be charged and no I don't think the deputy should be charged with Murder however if you watch the news he was told to end the chase, that he had the drivers information and they could issue at warrant. At the time the only charges were driving without a license or something like that. The officer was told as soon as the chase started to end it but he chose to ignore that request. When he saw the driver wasn't going to slow down he should have ended the chase. This by no means takes away from the blame of the driver. He chose his actions and is responsible, however it is a proven fact that a good many of the chases either do end in an accident or tragedy such as this one. I sincerely hope all law enforcement agencies take a look at this and think about the consequences of these chases. I to want the drivers involved to in any chase to be punished but not at the expense of innocent people.

I recently had family in from out of town. They tried the new restaurant and were very disappointed. They commented that they had gotten better Mexican food from Taco Bell, they also commented that they would have given them a second chance in the future however the customer service was worst than the food. I guess Johnston’s still on for good Mexican food.

This is in regard to the posting about the person who felt the Police Officer should be charged in the traffic chase.  I really don't know how to debate such foolishness but Consider, who was breaking the law?  Why did he want to run?  The Criminal is responsible for his actions, and it was the criminal who ran from the police it was the criminal who went through the red light it was the criminal who caused the death.  And by the way, how do you know the truck was not stolen? What it if was stolen from you, then they had your tag number Of course if that was the case, then by your logic, you would have been guilty of the crime.  As I see it that would have been no great loss either; you in jail would only be one more fool off the road.  Years ago there was a guy who pleaded guilty to robbing a store, but not to shooting store clerk, even though it was all recorded on the store security camera.  His reason made as much sense as yours. "If he would have just given me the money I would not have had to shoot him" The only reason you are walking the streets is stupidly is not a crime.

The mud bogging site in Aiken County is off of Highway 39 just outside of Monetta.  There is a sign posted on Highway 39 that will lead you to the site and give you the date for the next mud bogging event.  This has become a very popular site and operates on various Saturday's.

Any idea why there were 15-20 cars at the ECSD  office late on Sunday afternoon?  Was there some type of called board meeting?

Editor's note: I do not know unless there was a training session.

I saw on the news where an innocent woman was killed because Richmond County cops were chasing some fool making him run a red light. They said the cops had the tag number so why did they keep chasing this guy knowing he would probably kill somebody? They should arrest the cops for murder.

Editor's note: I have only a few details on this story. However, there is no way the Deputy could know the man would run a red light and crash into somebody else. I do not know why they were chasing him. I find it interesting that you want to charge the deputy with murder and not the man driving the truck that ran the red light. Who was breaking the law at the time of the crash? The deputy or the criminal?

Your coverage of the Meeting Street incident has been very informative. However, I have a question?  Is there a memorial anywhere in this town to Sheriff Allen and Deputy Clark? These two men died in the line of duty as law enforcement officers.  If no memorial exist, then what is wrong with Edgefield?  Why have we not honored these men with at least a plaque in our courthouse.  They were law enforcement officers who were KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY for this county.

Editor's note: Thank you for your kind comments. I do not know of any such memorial. It may be something our county leaders should consider. I do know they were not the last to die in the line of duty from Edgefield County.

Councilman Dorn is feeling persecuted these days with the publicity he has received. And, it is my prediction, Councilman Dorn has requested Sheriff's deputies (to report for the council meeting) in order to arrest or remove anyone who Councilman Dorn believes is a menace during the meeting. If this proves true, what a sad day for this county when the "Village Idiot" (Dorn) can use Sheriff's deputies as 'bouncers'. And, if voters put up with this form of dictatorship and misuse of taxpayer dollars, by allowing this joke of a councilman to manipulate and dictate what occurs during council meetings, you get what you deserve.

Are you related to Homer S. Blackwell, the law partner of Senator Ben Nicholson, of Edgefield, the defense attorneys for Joe Frank Logue, Jr. in the farce they called a trial, back in 1943? If you are, as I've said before, we all have some dirt, in the past, if we look far enough!

Hillary Clinton is trying to make up ground on Barack Obama by proclaiming that she would be the best one on the phone at 3 a.m. If Hillary is on the phone at 3 a.m. the best bet is she would be trying to find Old Bill, who managed to turn the White House into a second-rate porn site. She certainly wouldn't be on the phone trying to protect me, my family and you folks out there.

I have not read Wanton Woman but I have read The Guns of Meeting Street.  It is an excellent book and gives a lot of information on events that happened years before the actual murders.  It also contains information from the court trials.  I would recommend that anyone who is interested in the case read it.

It comes as shocking news that 1 out of every 100 Americans is sitting behind bars in the nation's jails. An even more startling statistic is that 1 in 13 of black males between 20 and 34 make up the majority of the inmates. That's just the ones the law has been able to catch. Let me suggest there is an easy way out of this for the inmates and the criminals-in-training. Go to school and get an education (it's free), get a job and pay taxes to support the schools, avoid joining gangs, leave other people's property alone, stay off drugs, including cheap beer and wine, dress appropriately (no business owner in his right mind will hire anyone who wears his trousers below his behind, show respect and courtesy to others, tell police about those who carjack, mug, snatch purses and sell drugs and, above all, quit complaining about the "man," as if white people are the source of everyone's troubles. If all this is done you will be amazed at how fast the incarceration numbers will go down.

I enjoyed the story on Sue Logue. I am going to buy one of the books. It sounds interesting. Do you have one you recommend over the other?

Editor's note: To be honest I have not read either book. The Guns of Meeting Street is the most documented and is a very long book. I think it is over 500 pages. It is a "brass tacks" of the who, what, where, when and how. Wanton Woman is a thinner book that could be read in an afternoon and, as I understand, is one that has some of the more sultry details from Sue Logue's perspective.

It was all over the town today that (County Councilman) Norman Dorn asked the sheriff to have deputies at the county (council) meeting Tuesday night. Do you know anything about that or why?

Editor's note: I was informed of the request on Friday. I have no idea why the request was made. Then again, we are talking about Norman Dorn so logic is not something that would come into play. I have been told his son is going to speak. If so, I would encourage everyone to attend the meeting Tuesday night, 6 pm. It should be better than any comedy show you have ever attended. Best of all, it is free. Maybe it will be a remake of the movie Dumb and Dumber. I am not sure which Dorn would play which part. Maybe it should be called Dumber and Dumbest?

What was Mr. Tommy Burton trying to prove with his letter? The only thing I got from it was that he is uneducated.

"On Jan. 15, 1943, Sue Logue was electrocuted. One book reports that Strom Thurmond accompanied Sue on the trip to the “death house” and had relations with her during the trip, according to Thurmond’s driver interviewed for the book. Sue Logue was the first and only woman to die in the electric chair in South Carolina."

Senator Thurmond was in the Civil Affairs Division of the United States Army during World War II. The question I have is how he could be serving over-seas in England or Africa at the time of Sue Logue’s Electrocution?  That fact kinds puts a whole in the Had Relations Hypothesis doesn’t it.   I wish someone would check his Service Record or the sign in record at the State Prison.

Great Article.

Editor's note: The historical record confirms Strom Thurmond's presence in the events. Thank you for you kind words. As stated in the Wandering Minds disclaimer. I will always try to find the answers to questions posed.

To the poster regarding printing the recipes.  The easiest way to print one page is to tell the printer to print 1 page in the selection of pages.  Most computers give you a choice of “all” pages or pages 1-10 or whatever, so select print page 1-1 and you won’t get all the rest of the advertised pages.  You can cut and paste as suggested, but I found that printing it just like it is, the actual size of the recipe width wise, when trimmed out of the ads, fits just right in my recipe box.  I fold it length wise to fit.  Use clear contact paper to ‘laminate’ it and it will last a long time.

Thanks Edgefield Daily and all readers for all the good recipes!
