Another church targeted by thieves

web posted January 17, 2007

WESTSIDE – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office was contacted on Tuesday of another church being the target of theft just before noon. Thieves have already struck two other churches over the weekend, the Old Piney Grove and Carrie Hill Baptist churches, leaving over $10,000 in damage. Tuesday investigators were working another similar case this time at the Red Oak Grove Baptist Church.

As in the previous cases the air conditioning units were stripped of all copper tubing and aluminum. “All they are leaving is the compressor,” Investigator Doran said Tuesday morning before the latest theft was discovered. Tuesday afternoon Doran said the theft at Red Oak Grove left them with a loss of over $6,000 when three HVAC units were left destroyed.

Investigators have contacted area recycling centers in an effort to track down the perpetrators. Similar thefts have been reported in Aiken County as well.

Investigators have collected usable evidence at all the crime scenes and are actively investigating the cases.
