Teens found intoxicated at large party, three charged web posted May 8, 2007 WESTSIDE – Edgefield County Deputies were given an anonymous tip that two suspects who allegedly damaged over a dozen mailboxes on Saturday night were at a home on the 3100 block of Martintown Road. When the deputies arrived around midnight they spotted about forty people in the front yard of the home with beer bottles and plastic cups, most of whom were juveniles. When the teens saw the deputies they began running behind the house or into the woods with the deputies in pursuit. The deputies were able to capture about twenty of the teens and returned them to the house. When the deputies entered the home they saw several people passed out in various places, beer cans lying about, and smelled a “strong odor of marijuana”. It was later determined who the homeowner was, although he was not present at the time, but arrived later. Marijuana was found in several ashtrays. Beer cans and liquor bottles were strewn about the yard. Additional deputies were called in to handle the situation. A majority of those identified by deputies were minors and were “extremely intoxicated” according to incident reports. Deputies began calling their parents to the home to retrieve their children. While identifying the teens, the two suspects from the earlier reports of vandalism were confirmed and arrested. They were identified as Joshua Owen Thaxton,19, of Adamsville Spring Road, and Joel Duncan Mathis, 18, of Ascauga Lake Road, both of North Augusta. While waiting for several tow trucks to arrive, one teen was seen going to his truck and retrieved a straw from his seat. When deputies asked what he had he responded that it was “nothing”. Officers retrieved the small straw and found it contained what they believed to be cocaine residue. The straw was taken as evidence to be tested. Another teen walked up to deputies and became very irate that his vehicle was being towed. As deputies tried to explain the situation the teen began cursing and causing a scene. After repeated attempts to calm the youth he yelled out, “(expletive) the mother (expletive) police,” reports indicate. At that time the deputies informed him he was under arrest for disorderly conduct. The teen ran and deputies chased the him through a field and into a wooded area where he attempted to hide. Deputies found the teen and he began fighting and had to be subdued with pepper spray. Kyle Andrew McLane, 18, of Double Creek Road, Edgefield, was transported to the Edgefield County Hospital to be checked for several cuts to his arms and legs that he got while fleeing arrest. He was later transported and booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center and charged with resisting arrest. The homeowner, who arrived at the location around 6 am, said he was unaware of what had taken place and stated he did not condone the activity. Deputies were on the scene for over ten hours before clearing the call. For
