 Man reports $250,000 winner's scam to police web posted July 25, 2006 WESTSIDE – A Garrett Road man notified the Sheriff’s Office of a possible “flim-flam” over the weekend. The man said he received a check in the mail for almost $5,000 and notification he had won $250,000. According to the information provided, the man was sent a check for $4,880 with instructions to deposit the check and wire $2,975 of it back to a company listed as a financial institution to cover taxes on the winnings. The man said he became suspicious due to an earlier unsuccessful swindle. The man took the check to his bank, they made a copy of the check for him, and the bank kept the original. The deputy informed the man not to send any money to anyone. The case has been turned over to investigators for follow-up. Attempts to contact the supposed financial institution found the phone number was to a residence and the gentleman that answered the phone stated he has received a lot of calls regarding the supposed company.
