Another close call for county resident in accident

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted July  30, 2005

WESTSIDE - Wet roads seem to have contributed to a close call on Garrett Road. Around 6:30 pm Friday evening Linda Hammond and her daughter were traveling down Garrett Road when a car swerved into their lane. Quick thinking and timing avoided a head on collision.

Pictured left is the car reported to have left the road. Note the grass forced into the rim of the tire

After gathering her thoughts Mrs. Hammond returned to the scene to find the car that had almost hit her deep into the shoulder of her side of the road. “There was nobody around and the keys were in the car,” one witness told Edgefield Daily.com.

Left is the location of the accident, just yards beyond where a driver was killed coming out of the same curve.

Other witnesses said a truck came along and pulled the car out and it was driven away by a driver that came from the truck. The car was then driven to Old Piney Grove Baptist Church and left in the parking lot. A sign on the oncoming side of the road was knocked down and lay in the path the car took as it careened into the thick underbrush and the abandoned car had obvious underbrush stuck in the tires and other areas of the car.

At this writing the Edgefield Sheriff’s Department was still investigating the accident. The call was received by the E911 at 6:48 pm.

Mrs. Hammond’s daughter said she was frightened by the event and was,”glad everyone was OK.”
