Westlake resident charged in felony lynching in Garrett Road attack

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted September 17, 2005

WESTSIDE – Edgefield County Deputies were called to the 200 block of Garrett Road on a report of a group of young men attacking another young man last weekend. Deputy Willie Callaham and Sgt. Marty English responded to find a seventeen year old with, “severe injuries”, according to police reports. The young man stated he and a friend were hunting on property and had wandered off onto an adjoining piece of property when they were approached by the owner’s son. The son told the two to leave and they complied.

As the two were walking back to their truck the group of five teens began to follow them then jumped out and attacked them. One of the two teens ran away and called for help as the group of boys began beating the young man left behind.

After a short investigation the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department identified the five young men who attacked the two teens. One of the five was Brannen Wade Austin, 18, of the 3500 block of Pebble Beach Drive in the Westlake Community in Martinez. He was charged with felony lynching in the second degree on September 14, 2005. The other teens, ages 17, 16, and two 15 year olds, two of which are brothers, have been petitioned to family court on similar charges but not felony charges. The 17 year old was not charged as he is said to have not participated in the attack.

There is a chance the 16 year old may be petitioned to be tried as an adult we were told. All the teens were from what is considered to be the "better neighborhoods" in Martinez.

During the attack the victim’s Remington 1100 shot gun was damaged. Investigator Randy Doran said the attackers were lucky the victim did not use his gun to defend himself. “He would have probably been justified,” in shooting his attackers during the five on one attack Doran said.

Edgefield Daily.com will continue to follow this story as it develops. The property in dispute was said to be owned by Mr. Austin’s father, a doctor in Augusta, Ga.
